A WORD FROM OUR WEST ARMY PARTNERS
Only Rain Down the Drain: What NOT to Dump at JBLM
By: James McEwan DPW Environmental Division, AGEISS
Storm drains are everywhere at JBLM along roads, in parking lots, and near homes But do you know where they lead? Unlike household drains that connect to a wastewater treatment plant, storm drains flow directly into JBLM’s lakes, streams, and groundwater without filtration or treatment. That means anything that goes down a storm drain oil, soap, fertilizer, or trash ends up in our environment.
Keeping JBLM’s stormwater clean starts with all of us. Here are some things not to dump down storm drains and how to dispose of waste properly.
Household Hazardous Waste: Keep Chemicals Out of Storm Drains
Many common household items contain harmful chemicals that can contaminate JBLM’s water if disposed of improperly. These include:
Paints and Solvents – Never rinse paintbrushes or dump leftover paint into storm drains. Instead, take unused paint to a hazardous waste collection site.
Motor Oil and Antifreeze – Just one gallon of motor oil can contaminate one million gallons of water! Use designated collection sites for automotive fluids.
Household Cleaners Bleach, ammonia, and disinfectants should never be disposed of in storm drains Instead, dispose of them according to JBLM’s hazardous waste guidelines
Safe Disposal Tip: JBLM provides hazardous waste disposal options, call 253-967-4786
Yard Waste: Grass
Clippings &
Leaves Belong in the Compost, Not the Drain
It may seem harmless, but dumping grass clippings, leaves, or branches into storm drains can clog pipes and cause flooding. More importantly, yard waste carries excess nutrients into JBLM’s lakes and streams, contributing to harmful algae blooms.
Instead of dumping yard waste:
✔ Mulch leaves and clippings to improve soil health
✔ Compost yard debris to create nutrient-rich soil for your garden
Soap & Wash Water: How You Clean Matters
Washing your car in the driveway or rinsing paint brushes outside might seem fine, but soapy water, grease, and dirt wash straight into storm drains. Even biodegradable soap can harm aquatic life by lowering water oxygen levels.
Better Option: Wash your car at a JBLM-approved car wash facility, where water is properly filtered Remember that washing your car in your driveway is not allowed on JBLM
Trash & Litter: Small Items, Big Problems
Litter is one of the most visible pollutants in storm drains. Plastics, cigarette butts, food wrappers, and other debris travel through storm drains into JBLM’s waterways, harming fish and wildlife.
Prevent litter pollution by:
✔ Keeping trash cans secure, especially on windy days.
✔ Picking up litter around your home and in your neighborhood.
✔ Participating in JBLM clean-up events to protect our environment.
Spills & Leaks: Act Fast to Prevent Pollution
Even a small oil or chemical spill can greatly impact JBLM’s water If you spill something hazardous:
✔ Do NOT rinse it down the drain
✔ Use absorbent materials (like kitty litter or sand) to clean it up
✔ Report large spills immediately to 911
Protecting JBLM’s Water Starts with You
Stormwater pollution isn’t just an environmental issue; it affects our health, JBLM’s ecosystem, and the community’s quality of life. By keeping chemicals, trash, and debris out of storm drains, we can all do our part to protect JBLM’s water. Remember: Only Rain Down the Drain!
