OCTOBER

2025

Cancer has touched all our lives in one way or another. When the diagnosis comes in, time stands still. A rush of emotions takes over, and in that moment, life changes. We all know someone who has faced this and begun the fight for their life.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers among women. This month is a powerful reminder to stay informed, take action to reduce risk, support those affected, and help advance the search for a cure.

Liberty Military Housing understands the impact of having someone close to you go through breast cancer. Whether you're currently facing this journey or standing by someone who is, please know that you are not alone. We are here for you and your family.

We all have a role to play - from spreading awareness and offering support to making changes that benefit our health and future.

Live Green: Studies show that adopting eco-friendly habits - like eating clean, reducing chemical exposure, and staying active - can significantly lower your risk of cancer. These simple lifestyle changes support both personal and environmental health.

Think Pink: Get involved, show your support, and help make a difference in the fight against breast cancer. Visit the Living Green Booth during your District’s Fall Festival to donate to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Preventing Spills & Leaks: Keeping Your Home & JBLM’s Water Clean

Spills happen Whether it is a leaking car, a knocked-over bottle of cleaner, or an accidental paint spill, small household leaks can greatly impact JBLM’s environment When spills aren’t cleaned up properly, rainwater washes them into storm drains, sending oil, chemicals, and pollutants straight into local streams, lakes, and groundwater.

The good news? We can all help prevent stormwater pollution and keep JBLM’s water clean with a few simple habits Here’s what you need to know about preventing and cleaning up spills in your home and around your neighborhood

Household Chemicals: Store & Dispose of Them Properly

Many common household products contain harmful chemicals that can pollute water if spilled or disposed of incorrectly These include:

Cleaning products – Bleach, ammonia, and disinfectants can harm fish and wildlife if they enter storm drains.

Paints & solvents – Leftover paint and paint thinners should never be rinsed into drains or dumped outside

Motor oil & antifreeze – Just one quart of motor oil can contaminate 250,000 gallons of water!

Prevent spills by:

✔ Storing chemicals in sealed, labeled containers.

✔ Keeping hazardous materials off driveways and outdoor areas where they could wash into storm drains

✔ Using JBLM’s designated hazardous waste disposal sites instead of dumping unwanted chemicals.

Need to dispose of hazardous waste? Call 253-967-4786 for a drop-off location.

Automotive

Leaks: Spot & Fix Them Fast

A few drops of oil might not seem like a big deal, but those small leaks add up fast with thousands of vehicles on JBLM. Oil, transmission fluid, and antifreeze that drip onto driveways and streets are washed into storm drains when it rains.

How to prevent automotive pollution:

✔ Check for leaks regularly – Look under your car for dark spots or puddles.

✔ Fix leaks immediately – A simple repair can prevent long-term damage to your car and the environment.

Spill Cleanup: What to Do When Accidents Happen

Even with the best prevention efforts, spills can still occur. The most important thing is to act fast and clean them up properly

If you spill oil, paint, or chemicals:

· Do NOT rinse it down the drain! This just sends pollutants straight to JBLM’s waterways. Use absorbent materials like kitty litter or sand to soak up the spill.

· Sweep it up and dispose of it properly. Never hose a spill into the street or storm drain.

· Report large spills. If a hazardous spill has occurred, call 911 and report it

Cleaning Without Polluting

Even everyday household cleaning can contribute to stormwater pollution. When washing outdoor surfaces, keep these best practices in mind:

Never rinse soapy water into storm drains. Use a mop and bucket to contain waste

Use JBLM’s approved car wash facilities. Unlike driveway washing, these facilities properly filter and treat runoff.

Use environmentally friendly cleaners. Look for non-toxic, biodegradable options to reduce chemical pollution.

Small Actions = Big Impact

Preventing pollution isn’t complicated. JBLM residents can help protect water quality, wildlife, and the environment by taking a few extra precautions. Whether fixing a leak, disposing of chemicals properly, or quickly cleaning up a spill, every action makes a difference.

Let’s work together to prevent spills and protect JBLM’s water!
