Summer Newsletter 2025

Welcome to your Summer Newsletter

We are thrilled to share our Summer Newsletter with you and hope you enjoy reading about the incredible work your generous support has enabled our local hospice charity to deliver.

Last year we supported over 1200 patients and their families across east Dorset, Bournemouth, Christchurch, Purbeck, and west Hampshire. We are continuing to collaborate with GPs, the NHS and other local healthcare providers. We are proud to focus on person-centred care, putting our patients and their families at the centre of what we do and be able to support them when they need us most.

We hope to support more local people this year. None of this would be possible without your kind support through donations, volunteering, raising awareness and so much more. Thank you so much.

SHOW

Thursday 18th September, Porsche Centre Bournemouth 7pm-9pm.

Swanage based, 90-yearold Anne was experiencing declining health, including difficulty walking, advanced macular degeneration and cataracts, which impacted her independence and well-being.

Anne’s Personalised Occupational Therapy Support

Anne’s hairdresser, who worked with Lewis-Manning Hospice Care, suggested that Anne shouldn’t be alone so often and put her name forward for Hospice at Home support.

Occupational Therapist Sue assessed Anne and discovered that walking caused her significant pain. Sue created a treatment plan to help Anne increase physical and mental wellbeing.

Sue advised, “Anne regained strength, stamina, and mobility. She can now get out of chairs more easily and engage in activities that help her maintain her independence.”

Anne and her husband, married for 56 years, feel their lives have improved significantly due to the care and support from Lewis-Manning Hospice Care.

Anne has expressed gratitude for the changes, noting how these interventions have enhanced her quality and pattern of life.

Anne’s story:

Alternative Therapies

One of our alternative treatments our team can offer is complementary therapies

The idea of offering complementary therapies in hospice care is to support our patients on an emotional and spiritual level, helping them to reconnect with themselves, their mind and their body.

All of our offerings have been shown to increase dopamine and serotonin levels to help boost moods, encourage relaxation and sleep quality and help with pain reduction. It’s important to us as a team to encourage patients to feel like they are no longer isolated and living with a condition on their own, and are living the best life possible with their condition whatever that may be. We give patients the tools to enable them to lead a happier, healthier life: by providing nurturing touch; by helping them to live in the present moment; by reducing negative thoughts; and by giving them the time and space they need.

Who can access these treatments, and how?

We treat patients, carers and their families. You can access this by completing the hospice referral form on our website or speaking to your Lewis-Manning staff. Upon meeting you we will carry out a consultation. We can visit your home or treat you in our hubs.

We have many modalities so we can reach each patient on a holistic level. Our treatments consist of:

• Massage

• Cancer Touch Therapy

• Energy healing such as reiki and gentle release therapy

• Reflexology

• Indian head massage

• Sound therapy

• Laughing yoga

• Mindfulness

• Meditation

• Social interaction and wellbeing support

• Seated group sessions (singing, breathwork, laughter, music and movement)

What’s new?

NHS Dorset Inspection

Following a NHS Dorset Inspection in November 2024, we are thrilled to share the NHS congratulated us on excellent patient centred care.

Away Day

The whole team, including CEO Clare Gallie, took part in a clinical away day to capture achievements and to review and develop our clinical strategy. The focus is on early engagement and inclusive palliative care services within local communities, with a desire to collaborate and integrate further into the health and social care system. 2025 is set to be a very productive and exciting year and we hope to widen our reach to help as many individuals as possible and families in need of this support to live well with a life limiting illness.

Meet Glenn who volunteers in our Winton shop!

What inspired you to start volunteering for Lewis-Manning Hospice Care?

First and foremost I wanted to volunteer with a small local charity as I believe it is important to try and give back to the local community. I too live with a life-limiting illness (Huntington’s) so the aims of the charity are important to me personally as I can relate to the effects and challenges this brings to our service users.

What do you like most about volunteering?

I enjoy the variety my volunteering role brings, no two days are the same. With a retail and events management background, my work in the shop and helping organise pop-up events

with Bournemouth University plays to my interests. I have also worked in the voluntary and disability sector, working with young adults with special educational needs and disabilities so I particularly enjoy helping to support and working alongside vulnerable adults who do amazing volunteering in the Winton shop.

What would you tell someone thinking about volunteering?

Absolutely do it! Volunteering is so rewarding and I guarantee you won’t look back. It’s a great way to meet new people, use your skills to help others while learning new skills along the way. Volunteering with a friendly and supportive charity like Lewis-Manning is such a joy!

Meet Jayne who volunteers in our Wareham Day Hospice!

What inspired you to start volunteering for Lewis-Manning Hospice Care?

Having had many members of my family benefit from the wonderful support of their local hospice in the Midlands, living in Dorset I can help families here to get the amazing support they need. Lewis-Manning’s approach to hospice care resonated with me and I wanted to get involved to help them change the way hospice care is delivered.

Also, it helps me fulfil my wish to make a difference to people, which is a huge part of what makes me tick as an individual. I was an infant teacher for over 30 years and enjoyed building relationships with and supporting hundreds of children, families and colleagues along the way. Being a volunteer helps me to enjoy some more of those special moments, just in a different way.

What do you like most about volunteering?

The people! Everybody at Lewis-Manning is amazing and they make you feel valued and appreciated as a team member. Everyone at Wareham Day Hospice is wonderful and

the patients are such great characters. Chatting over tea and biscuits, helping with activities and games, while sharing a listening ear and a laugh, is very special. There are lots of smiles and a few emotional moments too because that’s what spending time together and brightening each Tuesday together is all about.

What would you tell someone thinking about volunteering?

Just do it! Through making a difference to the lives of others, you will make the biggest difference to yours.

Lisa lives with her husband and 2 children in Ringwood. She’s had a lifelong passion for swimming; she is a former Bournemouth Beach Lifeguard and has been a member of Team GB’s synchronised swimming team. She’s now a swimming teacher.

Lisa was 42 years old when she spotted a lump on her breast. Within weeks she was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. This was a shock for her and her family; together, they faced a gruelling year of treatment for Lisa, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy and lymph node removal surgery.

Sadly, one year later Lisa’s cancer returned. This meant Lisa’s only option was to have an elective double mastectomy, in addition to other treatment.

“It was a shock. Telling the children I had to go through it again was particularly hard”

“I experienced a torrid of emotions – I was overwhelmed, helpless, angry, sad and broken. This was my next step of dealing with my cancer and another unfortunate opportunity in life to grow stronger and tackle cancer again, with the support from my family and friends. It was brutal.

“My first experience with lymphoedema was within the first few months after my lumpectomy. My wrist had swollen to the same size as my forearm. Within a short time the swelling and pain I was in became unbearable. It started slowly developing up my arm and into my breast.”

During this time Lisa was referred to Lewis-Manning Hospice Care’s Lymphoedema Clinic.

Linda, Senior Lymphoedema Nurse said “We started seeing her and delivered some intensive therapies including light therapy, physiotouch therapy and manual lymphatic drainage.

“Our Lymphoedema Clinic supports people who experience lymphoedema because of cancer treatments. We help them to manage their symptoms with specialist treatments, drainage massage techniques and compression garments.”

Lisa said: “I count myself lucky because I had early intervention with LewisManning. I needed to learn to live with Lymphoedema and to my amazement my swelling reduced significantly in a very short period of time.

“Knowledge empowers us breast cancer survivors’ to take charge of our own situations and early intervention provides the best chance for living a full life.”

Lisa now uses her knowledge and strength to live her life to the fullest, despite her challenges. Lewis-Manning will continue to support Lisa with check-ups and support in any other way the charity can.

MUDDY DOG DASH

Over 350 people and 300 dogs took part in the Muddy Dog Dash on 29th March, braving the mud and tackling obstacles at Upton Country Park!

Thanks to the incredible support of our community, the event raised enough to provide over 980 hours of hospice care to support local patients and their families impacted by life-limiting illnesses.

Louise Hopley, Specialist Respiratory Physiotherapist, shared:

“Exercise and having fun is key to our wellbeing at whatever stage of life we are. I am thrilled that we host an event like this to support living well in our community. When we move more, we feel better, and our health improvesadd some laughter and you have the perfect recipe for wellness!”

This event would not have been possible without the fantastic support of everyone who took part, cheered, and volunteered, along with our event sponsors, Barratt Homes and Care South, and all of our obstacle sponsors.

Avon Heath Country Park, Ringwood Sunday 28th September 11am - 4pm

An Inspiring Lecture on The Future of Palliative and End of Life Care

Our Visiting Professor Bee Wee Lecture in February had expert palliative care clinicians' offering insights into the future of services, education, research, and the ongoing challenges faced by patients and healthcare professionals alike in hospice care. We were grateful to hear talks from our CEO Clare Gallie, PhD Scholar Cathy Beresford, Professor Sam Porter and Dr Duncan Randall from the Centre for Wellbeing and Long-Term Health, and five nursing scholars supported by Lewis-Manning Hospice Care.

The event was described by senior figures in healthcare who attended as ‘Inspirational and Uplifting’.

Dying Matters Week

Hospice UK highlights Dying Matters Week annually in May to break down the stigma and taboo of talking about death and dying. This year, the focus is on how different communities and

cultures in the UK feel, talk about, and deal with death and dying – and what brings them together. Lewis-Manning Hospice Care nursing scholars are supporting a project on behalf of the hospice to explore culturally competent palliative care across Dorset and are involved in the National Hospice UK campaign.

Dorset Palliative and EOL Education Framework

Lewis-Manning Hospice Care is part of the hospice education network to support learning and development opportunities for healthcare professionals to develop skill and confidence within this speciality. The clinical team are developing content for a revised 2-day palliative and end of life care training programme, which we plan to roll out to community partners in the wider healthcare sector over the coming months.

Lymphoedema Awareness Week Training

During Lymphoedema Awareness Week, our fantastic Lymphoedema team hosted a teaching session for staff from The Harbour Hospital (Circle Health Group), welcoming their Oncology Clinical Services Manager, Senior Nurse, and Marketing Officer for an afternoon of learning. Through hands-on demonstrations, our team were able to provide insight into the support we provide for those living with lymphoedema.

Stewarts Garden Centres Charity Partnership

We were thrilled to be chosen as Stewart’s charity partner for their Broomhill and Christchurch centres in 2024, raising over £12,600! We are so grateful for their support - from ‘sunflower hunts’ and sunflower cupcakes to hosting patient day trips, helping with our Christmas Tree Collections, and more! Thank you to everyone who kindly made donations alongside their purchases.

We are proud to announce we have been chosen as Charity of the Year for Poole BID in 2025! We are looking forward to working on exciting projects including fundraising and volunteering opportunities for local people and businesses.

Vineyard tour

We took an excited and enthusiastic coach full of individuals from Dorset businesses for a tour of the Langham Wine Estate, near Dorchester. The day was filled with networking, guided vineyard tours, wine tasting, and delicious food.

We are grateful for the amazing support over 2 years from Poole Bay Holdings, who have participated in numerous activities raising vital funds, kindly volunteered at events, donated goods for our clinical team and so much more.

MSP Capital Volleyball day

Despite the rain, the 2024 MSP Capital Ltd Volleyball Championships was a smash hit! The third annual event raised £10,000.

Thank you to Barratt Homes who have supported us for over 4 years. Their kind sponsorship of many events including our Muddy Dog Dash, Simply Fabulous Ball and Candles, in addition to volunteering for our Christmas Tree Collections, has been hugely impactful for local people and families.
