Royal Approval For WW2 Veteran, Gordon

A Lewis-Manning Hospice Care patient has received a wonderful letter from King Charles III’s office recognising his amazing achievements and contributions to the success of WW2.

Gordon Forsey was an engineer modifying parts of guns and tanks which helped to defeat German tanks. He used to work 17-hour days and was very dedicated.

Gordon was presented the letter by Lewis-Manning’s volunteer driver, John Reid, who came dressed for the occasion in his RAF uniform. He said a few words about Gordon, his life and his wonderful accomplishments to all staff and patients present, as well as Gordon’s son.

The occasion was very moving and John said, “I’m thrilled and honoured to have presented Gordon with his framed letter, I knew it would mean a lot to him. I have been Gordon’s driver to and from the hospice for a while now and have had the pleasure of hearing the incredible stories he has to tell. They’re absolutely fascinating! It was great to see he’s finally received some recognition for his extensive work during WW2, he really is a wonderful man.”

for putting on this get together to celebrate my Dad. It was wonderful to see him receive his framed letter and enjoy tea and cakes with him and the rest of the day hospice patients. I know Lewis-Manning and its wonderful nurses mean a lot to him and this just made it even more special. So, thank you again.”

We’re Expanding

We’re expanding our services to help reach even more people with a lifelimiting illness in your community!

Since our last newsletter, we’ve opened our Purbeck Day Hospice in Wareham and welcomed three lovely patients on the first day. This number has grown to an incredible 12 patients a week, who have quickly settled in and developed some wonderful friendships.

As well as Purbeck, Lewis-Manning has also launched a drop-in hub in Corfe Mullen, so that patients, as well as their carers and loved ones, can pop in and spend time with our wonderful nurses and clinical team.

It’s not just our community hubs that are growing, our Breathlessness service and Lymphoedema clinic are also helping and reaching more

people than ever! In March, we celebrated the grand opening of the breathlessness service in Wareham after the incredible success of the Swanage and Wimborne expansion. This means that our amazing specialist clinical team can now support people suffering with breathlessness as a result of conditions such as lung cancer and COPD, closer to their homes, which is vital for the people with the types of conditions that need to use this service.

If you would like to learn more about our free of charge hospice care services, please give us a call on 01202 708470. Or you can visit our website, lewis-manning. org.uk where you can find lots of information and ways for you to be referred to one of our services.

Special Recognition For Our Fantastic Volunteer

Christina Wilson, a volunteer at Lewis-Manning Hospice Care, was nominated by the Lord Lieutenant of Dorset to attend a carol service at Westminster Abbey, titled ‘Together at Christmas’.

The carol service was hosted by HRH The Princess of Wales and dedicated to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 2nd and to all those who are no longer with us. In attendance was His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort, together with Their Royal Highnesses The Prince and Princess of Wales.

The service was conducted by The Very Reverend Dr David Hoyle MBE, Dean of Westminster. The service was sung by the Choir of Westminster Abbey, conducted by James O’Donnell, Organist and Master of the Choristers.

Christina has been a volunteer at Lewis-Manning for over 17 years and has held a variety of roles, including receptionist and supporting day care patients.

Reflecting on her experience

Christina said, “It was a truly memorable day at the Abbey. The service itself was very diverse and I felt so privileged to be there

amongst the many members of the Royal family. There were also many famous faces to be spotted, including Hugh Bonneville and Kristin Scott Thomas, both of whom did readings, as well as singers such as Craig David and even Mel C from the Spice Girls who gave a very different rendition of Silent Night with Alfie Boe!”

“We all joined in with the traditional carols and there was a very special and emotional moment when a Ukrainian children’s choir sang ‘Away in a Manger.’

“It was bitterly cold (I had about five layers under my coat!) as we queued up outside but all that was forgotten once we entered the warmth and magical atmosphere of the Abbey!”

As you may know we’ve just celebrated our 30th anniversary, and to make it extra special, we asked 30 amazing companies to join our ’30 for 30’ campaign, to help us raise £30,000 in our 30th year. We couldn’t have asked for a better response!

The local businesses that signed up all went the extra mile to help raise much-needed funds for our hospice. From taking on sponsored walks, climbs and runs, to volleyball tournaments, go karting, bake sales and so much more.

To say thank you, we recently hosted a ‘wrap party’, where all our ’30 for 30’ signups were invited to come together to celebrate their fantastic fundraising efforts over the past year.

We need to raise over £3.4m every year to continue providing our important services, so the money raised by our fabulous supporters will make such a difference to our hospice and the people in our community who rely on our free of charge services.

A Word From Our Charity Partner...

Care South is delighted to announce a formal partnership with Lewis-Manning Hospice Care which will mutually and equally benefit both Poole-based charities. The partnership is being funded through Care South’s Chairman’s 2020 Fund.

Care South and Lewis-Manning Hospice Care have held an informal partnership for a number of years and have worked closely to support one another through a wide range of initiatives and events.

Residents from Care South’s Dorset House care home in Poole were delighted to recently join Lewis-Manning Hospice Care at its ‘Muddy Dog Dash’. Residents wanted to see the start line, so they all sat near the action and watched the runners take part in a warmup with some residents joining in with the lunging and stretching. Others watched on excitedly and were delighted when runners brought their dogs over to meet them. Once the participants were underway, residents enjoyed a delicious lunch spread of sandwiches, cakes and hot drinks.

Simon Bird, Care South’s Chief Executive, commented: “This partnership is yet another way that Care South is able to support such an important local charity – and one which means so much to us all and supports us and residents in our care throughout the year. As part of the partnership, we have lots of interesting and exciting projects and initiatives planned as well as many more activities and events at our homes involving residents, staff and volunteers from both charities, throughout the year.”

Clare Gallie, CEO at LewisManning Hospice Care, added: “There are no words to express our gratitude and thanks to Care South for this grant in recognition of the partnership. Care South and Lewis-Manning are both charities and share the same values as one another. Thank you from the bottom of my heart –this fantastic sum of money will enable us to help more people and their loved ones in our community.”

A Very Special Day To Remember

AFC Bournemouth treated our wonderful patients, their carers and families to a fantastic day filled with fun and laughter at the Vitality Stadium in Bournemouth.

Patients and guests were welcomed by the club’s former Chairman and Lewis-Manning Ambassador, Jeff Mostyn, before taking an exclusive stadium tour. Everyone was treated to behind the scenes access to the changing rooms, pitch, the media room and lots more.

After a delicious hot lunch, the patients were able to take part in a game of chair football and other fantastically fun games, hosted by the amazing AFC Bournemouth’s community team. The room was a sea of smiles and giggles, with the team agreeing to come to the hospice in the future to play more chair football with patients - how wonderful!

The day concluded with a Q&A session with AFC Bournemouth’s rising talent, Ben Greenwood, who let us in on some trade secrets, like what they eat before a match and what a day in the life of a footballer is really like.

On behalf of all the patients, carers, family members and staff, Lewis-Manning Hospice Care would like to say a huge thank you to AFC Bournemouth’s team for such a magical day that we will not be forgetting any time soon.

If you or someone you know would benefit from our help and support, and be given the opportunity to experience days just like this, please get in touch with us today. Simply call 01202 708470 and ask to speak to the day hospice team, or you can visit our website to find out more about our services and how to get referred to Lewis-Manning Hospice Care.

“It’s been an absolute pleasure to come to AFC Bournemouth, all the staff at Lewis-Manning are simply wonderful.” Day Hospice Patient

“On our hospice days, we don’t sit and talk about our illnesses, we talk about everyday life. There’s no doom and gloom, there’s always so much laughter - it’s a very happy place to be.”

Fantastic Fundraiser - Shaun Casey

After 35 years of working long hours in the corporate events, travel and tourism sector, I wanted to be able to focus on a variety of different projects and activities when I took early retirement in 2018.

In the UK, I volunteer for a number of charities including Lewis-Manning Hospice Care. It has been amazing to see how the skills and expertise I’ve built up over the years in the corporate world have been invaluable to the third sector, in helping them support their fundraising efforts.

I know some people dread the thought of retiring, worrying about how they will feel and what they will do. There is no better way, however, to overcome these concerns than to work with an amazing group of people doing incredible work and actually being able to personally make a difference. These charities really need volunteers to commit time and energy to help them.

This winter I am spending time in Spain - enjoying the relaxed lifestyle, the great food and of course the sunshine! I wanted to stay active and in order to motivate me to keep up a relatively tough exercise regime, I decided to commit to swim 100km for Lewis-Manning Hospice Care. Whilst I’m a keen swimmer, it soon dawned on me that I was committing to swim the equivalent of the English Channel three times, or 80 lengths in my local training pool every working day for 10 weeks.

Not only has this small campaign generated over £500 from my network of contacts, it has raised awareness of the charity through my regular social media postings and has kept me fit and active, by giving me a goal to focus on and a commitment to fulfil. I’ve loved every minute of it!

Award Winners For Our Purbeck Services

Yippee – we won the Health & Wellness Award at the Purbeck Business Awards!

Debbie and Nicky from our fab nursing team attended the awards, which were held at Kingston Country Courtyard near Corfe Castle and returned to the hospice with our certificate, a smile and some fabulous recognition for all the incredible hard work, dedication and positive impact the team are making in Purbeck.

Recently, a Purbeck day hospice patient told Nicky “Thank you so much Lewis-Manning for providing this lovely service. Lewis-Manning is like part of the family.”

We pride ourselves on listening to what matters to our patients, rather than focusing on what is the matter with them. So we are beyond delighted to have received this award. Thank you to everyone who made this possible!

Dorset Gets Muddy!

Over 200 people and pooches joined in Lewis-Manning’s Muddy Dog Dash at Upton Country Park on Sunday 26th March and raised a whopping £12,000.

Participants took on a 2km or 4km obstacle circuit, which consisted of hurdles for hounds, woofderful weave poles, pawesome ball pits, pooches (water)pools, jumps and humps and a perfectly placed Dog Bar by Nurturing By Nature halfway around the course, for dogs and their owners to take a quick break and well deserved water!

There was also an event village for people to browse stalls from local businesses, such as dog food, pet clothing, pet portraits and more.

Runners enjoyed a warm-up hosted by the fantastic Sparky from Hot Radio and the station gave out spot prizes donated by Running Free, including Best Dressed and Muddiest Contestant.

Ruth Wright, Area Fundraiser at Lewis-Manning Hospice Care said, “We are absolutely ecstatic that so many people from our community came out on the Sunday to have buckets of fun and laughter, whilst raising vital funds for our hospice.”

“There have been so many supporters of this event from our incredible sponsors Barratt Homes, as well as Care South, Nurturing By Nature, Hot Radio and The Old Boys Club. Without their help and support the event wouldn’t have been as brilliant as it was. We cannot wait to run this event again next year at Upton Country Park!”

We would like to add an extra special thanks to Pukka Pads, Running Free, local Tesco & Asda supermarkets, Jollyes pet store, Curly Creator Co, Cribb Tyre & Battery Ltd, Capital Barriers & Temporary Fencing Ltd, Makro, Barking Barbers, Polygon Pets, Oscar Pets, Idris & Pals and Katherine Cromwell Artist. All these fantastic people and companies donated or supported the Muddy Dog Dash to make it as fabulous as possible.

See you next year...

Volunteer Voice - Jenny McNeil

I started volunteering at Lewis-Manning Hospice Care 14 years ago. It is one of the decisions I have made that has rewarded me in so many ways. I love the interaction in conversations with the patients and over the years these have indeed been many and varied. It is so nice to be part of their attendance at the day hospice and to be able to assist with the morning activities.

Our art table often releases talents that some never knew they had and the quizzes always entertain - sometimes more electrifying than edifying. It is a pleasure to see patients settle in to enjoy their time and watch them participate in gentle exercise and join in the sing songs with visiting musicians.

I know that the uncertainty with which patients sometimes approach their sessions is just as mine was when I first started. Soon though the upbeat atmosphere and friendly company of others quickly comforts and assures, guaranteeing that we all have a good time!

“All of the volunteers at Lewis-Manning Hospice Care are absolute gems. We wouldn’t be able to achieve what we do without their incredible help. If you’re thinking of volunteering, we say... DO IT! Through volunteering, you can challenge yourself to try something different. You can gain new skills or rediscover ones you had forgotten – and meet new people”
