Spring Newsletter 2024

Lewis-Manning Hospice Care

Welcome to your Spring Newsletter 2024!

We are thrilled to share our news with you and hope that you enjoy reading about all of the amazing and impactful work that your kind and generous support allows our local hospice charity to deliver. In the last few months I have had the privilege of spending even more time with many of our patients and their families and can honestly say that they are an inspiration to me.

Our work At Home, Closer to Home, at our Poole Hospice and in our hubs across Swanage, Wareham, Wimborne and Bournemouth is growing and expanding, and we continue to work in close collaboration with local GPs, the NHS and other healthcare providers. We are so pleased that our ethos of partnership working is improving care and focusing not only on ‘what’s the matter with the patient’ but, importantly, on ‘what matters to the patient’. With your continued support we hope to do even more in the coming year. Thank you so much for making this possible.

With all best wishes, as ever

How our Breathlessness service gave Ray his independence back

Ray, aged 67, is happily married with two step children. He has always been fit and active and has enjoyed many careers, including travelling around the country on the road as an engineer.

Ray had to retire early when he began to struggle with his breathing due to his lung disease. As his disease progressed it got more difficult for him to breathe, and the effort of breathing made his muscles tense and painful. Ray experienced breathlessness attacks, which turned into panic attacks, and sometimes resulted in 999 calls.

“IT FELT REALLY HORRIBLE, I WAS VERY LOW AT THAT TIME. I COULDN’T GET OUT OF THE HOUSE DUE TO FEAR OF [BREATHLESSNESS] ATTACKS… AND I DIDN’T WANT TO BE HERE ANYMORE.”
Patient story lewis-manning.org.uk 4

When Ray first came to our Breathlessness service, he was severely impacted by his breathlessness. Activities such as having a shower and getting dressed were very difficult and his wife was having to help him. This was increasingly hard for her due to her own health conditions.

Our Specialist Respiratory Physiotherapist taught Ray strategies to manage his condition more effectively, such as breathing techniques and pacing. We gave him a handheld fan which he now carries everywhere.

car, go to the shops, out for lunch and even take his dog for walks using his mobility scooter.

Ray said, “It helps me a lot and gives me more air when I need it.”

The Breathlessness Team looked at ways to reduce the effort in day-to-day tasks such as using a toweling robe, in order that his wife doesn’t have to help dry him after a shower. We also worked with Ray’s respiratory team who ensured he was on the right medication.

With our support, Ray began to understand the relationship between panic and breathlessness and adjusted his routine. Our Complementary Therapist helped him to feel calmer and more relaxed. We taught him mindfulness techniques so if panic does set in, Ray is able to notice the thoughts and feelings and allow the panic to pass.

Prior to coming to Lewis-Manning Ray was having panic attacks every day.

“Coming to Lewis Manning has helped with my breathing, the team have taught me how to breathe slowly… and control my breathing. The complementary therapy has been brilliant, it has helped me to relax, my breathing feels easier, and my chest feels clearer… I am enjoying my life again.”

Louise, our Specialist Respiratory Physiotherapist said “Breathlessness is a cruel symptom that impacts all aspects of people’s lives. It has been a privilege working alongside Ray, enabling him to regain independence and quality of life. His breathlessness is still there but he lives with it differently and is less afraid. I am really proud of the work that we do and the service that we offer to help people live more comfortably with their difficult symptoms. We will continue to support and empower people like Ray living with breathlessness”

Meet Chris!

Meet Chris North, one of our volunteer drivers! Chris volunteers as a patient driver, helping to safely transport our patients to our Day Hospice in Wareham.

We asked Chris…

What is your reason for volunteering? I am retired and have spare time which I wanted to put to good use, I think what I am now doing helps people.

What do you most like about volunteering with Lewis-Manning?

I looked to do various charity work. After talking to the Lewis-Manning staff in Swanage. I like the principles of the charity and their dedication to their Hospice patients was second to none. Also I was told that there was a shortage of volunteer drivers transporting patients.

What do you hope to get out of volunteering?

I find it very rewarding and the people I have transported are very grateful for what I do for them. I love seeing their smiling faces when they are going out for the day. We all have a good laugh when I am driving and sometimes I feel the journey is not long enough!

Tell us something about you! I love living in Swanage and the slow pace of life here. I feel so lucky to have this opportunity to help people who are not as lucky and as fit and able as me.

Below are just a few benefits of joining our volunteering team:

• Make a positive difference to people’s’ lives.

• Improve self esteem, confidence and wellbeing.

• Diverse roles available across the Clinical, Retail and Fundraising teams.

• Gain invaluable work experience.

• Gain new skills and make new friends.

It’s Spring Clean season!

Spring is finally here, the perfect time to declutter your home and wardrobe ready for the new season! For every tonne of clothes reused in charity shops, 11 tonnes of CO2e is saved and every item we sell helps raise funds to support people with lifelimiting illnesses across East Dorset and Purbeck. Rosa first met us at a charity networking event many years ago, when she was helping to run a support group called The Living Tree for local cancer patients. The day she was due to come to a follow-up meeting to see if Lewis-Manning could work with them, Rosa was ill so she couldn’t attend, and her friends told our team Rosa may need some of our help.

Rosa has rare genetic conditions known as Lynch Syndrome and Muir Torre Syndrome, which both increase the chance of cancers in the body. Rosa has experienced bowel, stomach, breast and skin cancer, and more, including severe arthritis.

Since first getting cancer when she was 42, Rosa, now aged 64, has led support groups Butterflies to help others in

Dorset. She has also raised an amazing family including two children, two grandchildren and four cats, and has lived abroad in Tenerife and Crete.

Rosa has benefited from our Wareham Day Hospice, home visits, virtual support in the pandemic, and ongoing online sessions.

“FROM THE VERY BEGINNING, IT INCREASED MY SELFCONFIDENCE. DOING THE PAINTING, AND SEEING IT, AND REALISING IT LOOKS GOOD WAS AMAZING FOR MY CONFIDENCE.”
“AT LEWIS-MANNING, YOU CAN BE AS ILL AS YOU WANT, BUT NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT.”
lewis-manning.org.uk 14
Rosa’s Story

She bonded with others in the sessions and was able to make social connections, leading to crocheting and knitting groups, and fostering some life-long friendships. Rosa’s first piece of watercolour art now hangs proudly in her home. She now paints, draws and also writes to help support her mental wellbeing.

“Creative art has given me support, freedom and confidence.”

Rosa kindly agreed to read one of her poems at the Opening Evening of our Patient Art Exhibition at the Lighthouse, Poole, and showed an audience of patients, charity supporters, staff and volunteers her art.

We are very grateful for this and are so proud to see Rosa have such confidence and strength in her powerful words.

Rosa’s art is part of our Art Exhibition at the Lighthouse, Poole, open from 5th – 26th April 2024. Come along for FREE and be inspired by our incredible patients like Rosa!

MUDDY DOG DASH 2024 YOU’RE PAW-SOME!

Back in March, we hosted our second Muddy Dog Dash! Over 400 of you came along with your furry-friends to take on a 2.5km and 5km obstacle course around Upton Country Park, weaving through poles, scrambling under nets, splashing through water and getting VERY muddy to raise money for our hospice.

After dashing through the finish line, all runners (both two and four-legged) were awarded a certificate, a rosette and a doggy bag full of goodies. We encouraged sponsorship of £50 per dog, which could

provide a session with a nurse and a therapy dog reducing anxiety, helping patients facing a terminal illness. In total, you helped us raise an incredible £15,000 for Lewis-Manning Hospice Care, just imagine the incredible difference this will make to local lives.

Thank you!

Fab Fundraiser Finley!

Six-year-old Finley took on the Muddy Dog Dash with his dog Hugo. “Money raised will go towards providing sessions with a therapy dog helping people who are very poorly just like in the Hospital Dog book. This is important to me because people might be close to dying and need a special buddy like Hugo to help them when they feel sad, scared and poorly. This is when Hugo helps me.”

A tree-mendous community effort! Christmas Tree Collection

In January, a team of festive volunteers came together to support our Christmas Tree Collection & Recycling service!

With their help, over 1000 Christmas trees were collected across BH1BH23 postcodes and recycled (that’s over 6.5 tons of chippings going back into local community projects) and thanks to your kind donations, you helped us to raise over £18,000.

This phenomenal amount ensured that our incredible clinical team could provide vital care and support to our patients, many of whom are living alone and isolated, over the festive period and we can continue providing extraordinary care in 2024.

Our Christmas Tree Collection service will be back for 2025!

Wendy and Arthur’s Story

Arthur was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease when he was 53. He and his wife, Wendy, attended a local Parkinson’s Support Group and somebody there mentioned Lewis-Manning Hospice Care.

On Arthur’s first visit to Day Hospice, he was very nervous, and Wendy stayed with him all day. They soon felt at ease with the others at Day Hospice.

Wendy said:

“EVERYBODY WAS FRIENDLY - THE STAFF AND THE OTHER PATIENTS. STRAIGHT AWAY, ARTHUR WAS QUITE A CHATTERBOX, AND VERY SOON MADE GOOD FRIENDS WITH THREE OTHERS. THEY GOT NICKNAMED THE FOUR MUSKETEERS BECAUSE THEY SPOKE SO WELL TOGETHER.”

Since then, Arthur has been a part of Lewis-Manning Day Hospice and has benefitted from good company and care including complementary therapies and creative art. Arthur attends every Wednesday, which helps Wendy with some muchneeded respite as his full-time carer. Wendy has also recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s.

lewis-manning.org.uk 18

Wendy and Arthur said:

“We are not going to be defined by Parkinson’s.”

“Parkinson’s is different with everybody that you talk to. Mine is shaky from the start, but Arthur’s is not so shaky so often, it’s more rigid.”

“This shaking business really annoys me because I try hard not to shake.”

“You worry a lot about what you look like, but here, you don’t have to.”

EDUCATION, EDUCATION, EDUCATION!

A word from our charity partner

Care South is a not-for-profit charity and a leading provider of care homes, assisted living developments and care at home services across the south of England.

This is the second year of our partnership, and we are delighted to be supporting residents and clients in their care, and patients of ours, with opportunities to be part of superb events, help fundraise, raise awareness of our services – and have fun at the same time. From meeting celebrities, joining local community events, special Christmas wreath making workshops, sunflower growing competitions and much more, here are just two examples:

Looking back on last year, one of our highlights was welcoming Care South residents Hazel and Peter to An Audience with Kate Adie in September. They both got to speak with her and receive a signed copy of her book! Hazel said “I have loved every minute of tonight. Kate is someone I saw an alliance with as we both worked in male dominated environments. She was fantastic. I will remember this forever.”

We also loved having Care South involved in our Muddy Dog Dash! They had a lovely VIP viewing area for residents, families and team members, so they could enjoy watching the dogs and runners getting muddy, whilst staying warm and dry! “Many residents in our care used to own pets, and whilst they may no longer be able to care for their own, we make sure they are still able to enjoy seeing them by either coming to us or making a trip out to see them.”

Making a positive difference

Peter Harding Wealth Management (PHWM) an Appointed Representative of St. James’s Place Wealth Management, is proud to continue their support for Lewis Manning Hospice Care

In October last year, Clair Smith and Nancy Bushell from the Peter Harding team took part in two major challenges and raised a fabulous £512 for Lewis-Manning Hospice Care!

Peter commented, “It’s been great to hear about the impressive growth of the hospice’s services to the local communities that it serves to support patients and their families with life limiting illnesses.

“We are committed to continuing our support to Lewis-Manning, it’s important to us as a business and brilliant to know that it is making a positive difference to them, and we’re very proud to have been able to facilitate these funds via the St. James’s Place Wealth Management Charitable Foundation.”

About St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation
