Lewis-Manning Hospice Care

Welcome to your Autumn Newsletter 2023!

I hope that you have had a lovely summer.

At Lewis-Manning Hospice Care it has been a very busy time delivering care and support to families, carers and of course patients, at home, in our hubs across Wareham, Swanage, Wimborne and across to Bournemouth as well as from our main hospice in Poole.

A patient recently said of the care she had received from us, ‘When we are born, we are wrapped up in a blanket and put in the safe hands of someone who will love and support us for the rest of our lives. What Lewis-Manning Hospice Care has done for me, now I am reaching the end of my life, is wrap me up in a big warm blanket, support and care for me and my family at the end of my life journey and for that I will be forever, eternally grateful’.

These kind words really brought it home to me the huge impact that our support has on so many local people in Dorset who need us. Without your generous help this would not be possible and with patient numbers increasing our work is in even more demand.

Thank you for making this possible.

I hope that you enjoy our newsletter.

With all best wishes,

Lymphoedema Team give a helping hand

“I was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer in 2015 and all went well. I did need a second surgery to remove the last few cancer cells from the breast tissue and all the lymph nodes after the one selected for testing was positive. None of the remaining lymph nodes showed cancer and I was reassured at the the team’s thoroughness.

I thought no more of it until I started getting a frozen shoulder and my doctor referred me to LewisManning Hospice Care. I was fitted for a sleeve and glove and carried on as usual as the shoulder started improving! The arm would swell and get uncomfortable in hot weather and when I used the arm a lot, but it tended to go down on its own. I was having more trouble with the side effects of my medicine and severe hormonal issues since chemotherapy threw me into menopause rather unceremoniously.

Fast forward to Spring 2022 and my arm and hand suddenly became more swollen than they had ever been and I couldn’t manage it at all. I was at a loss since it was now 7 years past treatment and I struggled to accept it was affecting me again. My physiotherapist persuaded me to get in touch with the clinic again, although I didn’t know if I was still eligible to see them. When I got an appointment, I

arrived in a bit of a state and they consoled me saying that they could make it better… and they did! But not just my arm- they helped me in numerous ways to feel positive and able to move on. They listened to me and we talked about everything. I looked forward to my appointments.

The therapist talked through the new improvements and methods now used in treatments and I was fortunate to have 3 weeks of intensive light, suction

and massage therapy. She took the time to find a glove and sleeve that fit me perfectly and discussed something I’d read about secondary breast cancer and did an examination to allay my fears. She finished by inviting my husband in so she could teach him how to do the massage technique. By the end of it my arm and hand looked so much better and I felt so much better in myself. It helped me realise the connection between the two and I had a renewed sense of ‘I deserve and need self-care’.

“THE TEAM AT LEWISMANNING DO A FANTASTIC JOB WITH THE PRACTICAL LYMPHOEDEMA ISSUES BUT ARE ALSO VERY ‘PEOPLE CENTERED’ AND CONCERNED FOR THE ‘WHOLE PATIENT’, INCLUDING THE WHOLE FAMILY. THEY WERE A GODSEND!”

Providing extraordinary hospice care even closer to home!

Our team have been busy over the summer helping to grow our services across Purbeck so we can help even more people, closer to home. Back in June we got the keys to our brand-new office hub based at Swanage Methodist Church, thanks to the kind support of the Church. This new base means that we can work even more closely with people in our community with lifelimiting illnesses and their families. Visit our website to learn more about our Hospice at Home service.

Volunteer Befrienders

Living with a life-limiting illness can be a very lonely time for some, that’s why we are very proud to have launched our new volunteer Befriender service. Our wonderful Befrienders support our patients in their own home, providing companionship, emotional support and a friendly listening ear. This service not only provides support for our patients, it also offers carers a couple of hours of respite and time to themselves. Our Befrienders come from all walks of life and make a world of difference to our patients, maybe you could become one too! Get in touch today to learn more.

Carers day out

Whilst our patients were enjoying Day Hospice, their carers were treated to some ‘me’ time on the water thanks to Silver Spirit Yacht Charters. The yacht set off on 13th July.

Carol and Karen’s ‘Grand’ getaway!

“It was a real surprise to find I had been nominated, chosen and then given an award for volunteering to keep in touch with patients during the pandemic. The reward was for a 2-night B&B break for two and a choice from a long list of hotels in the UK and a few in France. As Karen (another fabulous long-term volunteer) had also won the award, we decided to go together and if possible, take our 2 days consecutively, giving us a 4-night break. We settled on Yorkshire.

For my 2 days I plumped for York and was even more pleased when I learned that my first choice of hotel was not

available. Instead, we had been booked into ’The Grand’ hotel which was in a prime location in York. And boy was it Grand!!

Unbeknown to us, we were booked into a suite, with a lovely sitting room, large TV, huge bedroom and a luxurious bathroom. The staff were welcoming, very helpful and friendly. The breakfast was plentiful & delicious, with a choice of just about anythingsetting us up for the day’s sightseeing. York was wonderful and the weather was perfect too. We got on a ‘Hop on Hop off‘ open top bus and stayed on for the whole journey around York to

get our bearings and to make a note of the most interesting places to visit. Over the 2 days we managed to visit many of them, including York Minster which was enormous and simply magical. We took a boat ride along the river which included a commentary pointing out places of interest. Another enjoyable visit was to the York Train Museum which lots of people had advised us was a ‘Must see’. Really? Trains? Interesting? I have to say, ‘Yes, most definitely’. Who knew that we’d be taken back

in time to childhood and some of the trains we used to see when taking journeys to the seaside.

We loved York and will always be grateful to Lewis-Manning and the staff at ‘Room to Reward’ for our wonderful stay. We left York vowing to return one day.”

Last year, we celebrated 30 years of Lewis-Manning Hospice Care and 30 incredible local businesses pledged to help us raise £30,000 during the year. But the fundraising hasn’t stopped there...

TRU TALENT’S TERRIFIC QUIZ NIGHT

On the 22nd June, we were invited to get our thinking caps on at Tru Talent’s first charity fundraiser! Held at the Slug & Lettuce on Old Christchurch Road who kindly offered the space, Tru Talent hosted a fabulous quiz night which raised an incredible £700 for our charity.

BLOWING THE WHISTLE ON OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH AFC BOURNEMOUTH

After two wonderful years, our partnership with AFC Bournemouth has come to an end.

Their support over the past couple of years has made such a difference to local lives, from the £4,745 of funds they have raised for us, to the time they have put in to increase awareness for our charity and put a smile on our patients’ faces.

From our patient away day at the Vitality Stadium in March to the under 21’s team coming along to help with our Candles on the Lake event in October last year. Lewis-Manning would like to say a heartfelt thank you to all at AFC Bournemouth!

Scholarship students receive recognition awards at annual Bournemouth University Awards Ceremony

Five adult nursing students at Bournemouth University, who last year received acceptance onto the 2022/23 Scholarship scheme with Lewis-Manning Hospice Care, received recognition of their funded scholarships at the prestigious, annual Bournemouth University Faculty of Health & Social Sciences Student Awards Ceremony on the 28th of June 2023.

The scholarships have been kindly supported by Lewis-Manning Hospice Care via their partnership with The Burdett Trust for Nursing.

Students, Grace Lawrence, Maria-Gorati Okeke, Tyler Trifari, Katie Butler and Millie Gray were

presented with their awards by Lewis-Manning Hospice Care Academic Advisor Dr Linda Thompson and Chief Executive Officer Clare Gallie.

Katie, one of our 2022/23 Scholars, said: “The Lewis-Manning Hospice Care scholarship has been an amazing opportunity to expand my knowledge and love for palliative care. It has allowed me additional opportunities which I may not have had and given me a boost in confidence that I can one day make a difference.”

We are proud to be welcoming 5 new scholars to the programme next year.

Two Tough Mudders!

Back in May, super supporters Steven and Graham took on the Tough Mudder Challenge to help raise funds for our hospice and help us to continue providing our free services across our community.

Over 9 miles and 30 obstacles later, covered in mud from head to toe, Steve said: “It took a little over 4 hours to complete, all the while being electrocuted, cut, bruised, tear gassed, and just generally exhausted!"

Steve has been a continuous supporter of our charity through his work at Barclays, but one day he decided to take his fundraising to the extreme when he and his brother bravely signed up for the Tough Mudder Challenge, a 15km ultimate obstacle course through gruelling mud.

The brothers raised an incredible £270 for Lewis-Manning. This was match funded by Barclays UK, taking the total to £540.

Thank you both so much!

A Word from our Charity Sponsor

Care South launched a formal partnership with LewisManning Hospice Care earlier this year which is proving to be mutually beneficial for both charities. The Partnership is being funded through Care South’s Chairman’s 2020 Fund.

For the remainder of the year we are supporting Lewis-Manning’s jam packed schedule of events, starting with their Candles on the Lake event in Poole Park. Care South sponsored and attended the last two Candles on the Lake events and we were all really taken with what a wonderful event this was, a real opportunity to come together as a community to reflect and remember loved ones. Our residents wrote messages on their own candles and our team were able to float them on the lake which was such a lovely thing to be able to do.

This year we are looking forward to supporting all three Candles in the Community events in Poole, Wimborne and Swanage which our staff and residents are looking forward to taking part in.

As part of the partnership, Care South will also be supporting Lewis-Manning’s Christmas wreath making campaign. We are delighted to be able offer two of our homes as venues for the workshops where we will be providing mince pies and mulled wine for all participants!

Meet Sue, our Occupational Therapist

Sue joined our charity just 4 months ago, and has since been working incredibly hard across our services providing extraordinary care.

Keeping Hospice Care Closer to Home

Sue recently visited the home of one of our Day Hospice patients who needed some additional therapy at home. The patient experiences Parkinsons disease and uses a four wheeled walker to help with their mobility.

When Sue visited the home, she found the patient to be extremely ill with signs of both a chest infection and urinary tract infection. These infections combined can quickly cause patients to experience fluid retention, struggle with mobility and feel very uncomfortable. The patient’s wife was very concerned and worried for his condition.

Sue was concerned if the infections kept getting worse, the patient could have had to go to hospital that night. She acted immediatly and contacted the patient’s GP to request a prescription for antibiotics. The GP understood her concerns and agreed it was urgent to minimise the risk of hospitalisation.

Sue then also arranged for the patient to have a wheeled commode to help make him more comfortable, as well as raising his chair to help him relax and be as mobile as possible.

He and his wife were very grateful for the antibiotics and new equipment.

The next day, Sue called to check on the patient and his wife and was relieved to hear he was okay. Paramedics were sent to his home for a routine assessment. They confirmed diagnosis of both infections, and agreed the antibiotics were the best course of action.

At this difficult time, our nurse Sian also supported the patient by providing respite visits for his wife so she could take a break for her wellbeing.

He then went on to another course of antibiotics and continued to feel better. He joined a therapy ball session with Sue showing him new exercises and mobility practices. Afterwards, his wife let Sue know that when he got home, he was independently able to get out of the car thanks to the exercises.

We are very proud of Sue, the GP, practice nurses, paramedics and patient’s wife for this collaboration of efforts to help this patient avoid a hospital visit.

Nurse Story lewis-manning.org.uk 20

Moving on to better mobility

Recently, our clinical team had a referral from one of the Parkinson Nurse specialists in Bournemouth for a gentleman who was really struggling at home with poor mobility. He was reluctantly taking pain medication prescribed by his GP, which was just not doing enough for him. We quickly arranged a home assessment where we met the patient for the first time. The patient lives alone and was struggling to get in and out of bed due to his back pain. He was in extreme discomfort and struggling to move around his own home and was hesitant to come and spend time in our Day Hospice.

Our team instead arranged for a home visit by Sue, who completed a full mobility assessment to understand the patient’s condition and situation. Sue saw his pain; he was struggling to transfer in and out of bed and noticed this was the cause of his terrible back pain. This also caused the patient to be feeling miserable; the pain was intense and the fact he lives at home alone meant we needed to find a solution, quickly. Sue spoke with the patient’s GP and

put her plan in place to help improve the patient’s condition and make him more comfortable.

After ordering the patient a hospital bed with attachments to pull himself up and out of bed without putting additional strain on his back. Sue taught him some simple exercises and gave him information to help him feel confident stretching and moving more every day to help ease the pain. He was also provided with a walking aid so he could move around his home more easily, but more importantly, access his garden! After Sue put these measures into place, he now has no back pain at all, needs no pain relief and transfers in and out of bed safely.

This patient thanked Sue from the bottom of his heart as he is now pain free and feels he has his life back.

Our team know that a little bit of time and care goes a long way, and in this instance has completely transformed the life of this gentleman who can now continue to live at home alone comfortably, confidently and safely.

“IN MY 4 MONTHS HERE SO FAR, I HAVE LOVED CARING FOR OUR PATIENTS. THE QUALITY OF CARE AT LEWIS-MANNING IS SO HIGH AND I AM SO PROUD TO BE HERE. WE ARE PATIENT-FOCUSED AND TAKE TIME TO BRING THE BEST OUTCOMES POSSIBLE FOR OUR PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES. THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO DO.”

Occupational Therapist
Sue,

We listen to what matters

We are lucky to support our amazing community of patients, carers, nurses, students, staff and many more. We are so thankful for feedback about the impact of our charity’s work.

“Attending these clinics has allowed me to achieve some of the things others take for granted, like walking my children to school. This has made a huge difference to my life, allowing me to continue being a mum”.

Patient with Lung Cancer

“The Lewis-Manning team started helping me with social sits after I could no longer attend their Day Hospice sessions. I love it when “the girls” come to see me. They always make me a cup of coffee and pamper me by doing my nails and hair. I can’t look after myself like I used to and it gets me down but when they leave I feel beautiful again. I am so grateful and I don't know what I would do without my visits.”

Patient at home

“The scholarship has been an amazing learning experience. I have had access to a wealth of knowledge and expertise, and I can't wait to graduate to use it all to help patients. LewisManning has been excellent, and I can't recommend this charity enough.”

“I spend most of my days with people who care passionately about their jobs, are committed to providing the best care we can for our patients and making a real change in people’s lives”
