The Vicarage Bishopsteignton Dear Friends, Q.

Did you visit anywhere with a visitors’ book this summer? Did you sign it? Entries in visitors’ book can make interesting reading...

Last September, one of our Team churches had a special visitors’ book out for a fortnight, attracting 188 entries! This was St Mary’s Ideford, during ‘Devon Open Studios’, and you may have been one of the contributors, along with those from Scotland, Belgium and California... It was the only one of the 159 venues in the county that was a church, and among the very few open every day, and certainly the one offering the best teas at the weekends. And this year looking to build further on that resounding success. George Herbert, the rural vicar, poet and hymn writer, spoke of the Church being ‘the secretary of God’s praise.’ And as well as the comments that praised the work on display and in progress, the peaceful atmosphere and the beautiful building, there were also ones that simply said, “Praise God.” St Mary’s has a much praised acoustic, and wonderful music has been played there, as has also at St Nectan’s Ashcombe. While St John’s Luton has been host to ‘Festival of Farming’ weekends. Jesus spoke of the Church as being salt and light – having an all-round positive effect on the communities in which it’s set. One aspect of that, is in drawing out praise and wonder about the Creator, through acts of creativity, whether in the visual arts, music, drama, dance or the liturgy. One translation of something St Paul wrote to the Christians at Ephesus is “We are God’s work of art, created in Christ Jesus...” (Ephesians 2.10, Jerusalem Bible) What might it mean for each of us to be a ‘secretary of God’s praise’ this autumn? With love, Stephen.

DEVON OPEN STUDIOS 3 Artists at St. Mary's Church, Ideford Prize Draw Paul Freestone, Ollie Lucas and I would like to thank you all for your support for this important regional event. Last year the artists raised over £600 for St. Mary’s, through a donation jar, teas and a prize draw. This year, Paul is donating an original drawing of the Lych-gate, Ollie is giving one of his highly individual prints and I will be donating an original watercolour and pen work reflecting the musical images from the fantastic stained glass windows. The winners will be drawn on the last Sunday of Open Studios, at 4pm in the Village Hall during teas. If you would like to take part - please take the book of draw tickets from this newsletter, and return them to St. Mary’s between Saturday September 7th and Sunday September 22nd, where Ollie, Paul and I will collect them. More tickets will be available from us during the event. Thank you again, we look forward to welcoming you all to St. Mary’s to share our work and Inspirations. Good luck with the draw! Angie, Paul and Ollie

Edith Bushin nee Stevens 24.04.1923 – 13.05.2013 Edie was born in Stapley Cottage, Ideford in April 1923 together with her twin brother George (one of four sets of twins born in Ideford in the early twenties). They, together with their three sisters, attended the village school. On leaving school in 1937, Edie obtained employment at Lindridge, then still a fine country mansion, and later worked with Maude and Leonard Bushin at The Royal George Stores. In 1942 she married Leonard's youngest brother, John and their elder son, Chris, was born in the village in 1944. Although she left Ideford with her family not long after World War II, spending most of the rest of her life in Plymouth, the village was never far from any conversation with her. Thanks to sister in law Gladys Stevens, she was a regular recipient, and avid reader of this magazine. Her stories and anecdotes of village life and its characters 'between the wars' are already much missed. Roy Bushin

NEWS FROM ST MICHAEL'S TEIGNMOUTH Ongoing Building/Repair Projects We are currently in the process of undergoing 2 new projects regarding the church building; stage 3 of the roof project and repairs of various stained glass windows and associated masonry. Due to years of water ingress through the roof 3 Nave pillars have substantial damage which need to be repaired to finally complete the roof project. The repair of the windows is a major project and will require an enormous amount of fundraising and help from various outside organisations; specifications and development plans are currently under consideration. Both these items have been identified by the recent Quinquennial Inspection as needing attention in the next 12 months. Devon Historic Churches Trust 'ride and stride' Event We will be taking part in this event on Saturday 14th September 2013 and the church will be open between 10.00 - 16.00 hours to sign sponsorship forms for those taking part and to serve teas, coffees and home-made cakes to anyone visiting the church. 9
