The Vicarage Bishopsteignton Dear Friends, Because Easter was so early this year, June unusually starts with the ‘1st Sunday after Trinity’ – thereby excusing you having to suffer my attempts to explain the unique Christian belief in God as Trinity here. But then I’ve recently read a theologian, Ken Howard, saying, “If you can describe the Trinity in a way that people can understand, you are probably preaching heresy.” And even St Augustine confessed that in a dream God had called him foolish to attempt to fathom this mystery. And why stop at the most obvious mystery? At many points the Creed strains natural credulity. But that’s the whole point of faith – the opposite of which is not doubt, but certainty! So, this month why not be led by this saying of an unknown Jewish theologian, “We do not seek to understand God so that we might follow God, but rather, we follow, that we may understand.” With love, Stephen.

Open Studios You will remember I trust, the joy of St Mary's hosting the Devon Open Studios: Ideford, last September. Elsewhere in this month's issue are details of this year's event. I only want to add a pastoral note as Vicar, that the provision for a funeral, if needed, would not be compromised, but would be the same as when St Mary's was closed during March last year for repairs to the east wall. WELL DONE LUTON Well done Luton; you have again shown how well you rise to any occasion! The Bank Holiday walk and cream teas was a great success. My thanks go to Alan Quick for his hard work in planning and leading the walk and to the ladies who brought the scones, cake, jam etc, and helped serve the teas. OPEN STUDIOS Three of our local artists will be taking part in Devon Open Studios again this year, and displaying their work in St. Mary's Church from September 7th - 22nd. On the Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (September 7th & 8th, 13th, 14th & 15th, 20th, 21st & 22nd) we plan to provide light refreshments in the village hall, from 2pm until 5.00pm. I will be preparing a rota of helpers for each day - if you would be willing to help in any way - serving, washing up, baking etc. please contact Janet Aylmore on 01626 852259, email janetaylmore@hotmail.com or come along to the Tuesday Coffee Morning at Corner Cottage on June 18th. Last year this was a real community event enjoyed by visitors and the helpers - so please put the dates in your diary now.
Clara’s year in Uganda A big thank-you to all those who attended Andrew Cooper’s talk on Dartmoor and donated raffle prizes. A total of £327 was raised towards my year teaching orphans in Uganda. I would also like to thank those people who donated money but were unable to come on the night. I have now heard my project details in Uganda. I will be teaching in Archbishop Dr. Joseph Kiwanuka Primary School. The school is a Christian school with about 800 pupils. I will have a class size of about 120 students teaching them English, P.E. and Music. Conditions there are very difficult and include no clean water, no books or resources and inadequate toilet facilities, (one toilet for all students). I am very excited to be going out there to help these children and give them a chance of an education so easily taken for granted in this country. I would like to thank all those in the community who have supported me so much throughout my year of fundraising. I am humbled by your generosity and for making it possible for me to make a difference to these children’s lives. I leave on the 1st September and I will send regular updates to the parish news about what I am up to in Uganda. Clara Lovell 7

The Rag Bag re-cycling scheme has been developed to increase awareness about textile recycling, and by increasing our recycling rates we can help the environment by ensuring less material goes to landfill. The scheme is completely FREE, and our Church will be paid for every kg recycled. We can raise hundreds of pounds with every collection made! If we can divert some of this tonnage from landfill, we will directly help the environment and help provide good quality clothing to some of the poorest Developing nations of the world.

The show was very well attended from both parishioners and visitors. Everyone has worked hard to produce work of very high quality and individual style. The day would not have been complete without coffee, tea and cakes! We would like to thank everyone who baked, contributed and manned the refreshments - thank you all so much! The artists were on hand to talk about their work and I believe we may have encouraged some new members to join us. We will be working through the Summer, so why not come and have a go? You may arrive tired after a long day, but I promise you that you will leave refreshed! THANK YOU! Sunday April 28th dawned cold but dry - a perfect day for walking the Templer Way from Haytor to Shaldon raising funds to support the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team based at Ashburton. I was joined by my son-in-law, Adrian and 3 months pregnant daughter, Sally!! Sally planned to walk just part of the route, but ended up doing the full 18 miles. In her words ’What’s the point of stopping at Combeinteignhead when I can see Shaldon Bridge! Thank you to everyone who sponsored me I raised £130 for this good local cause. David Aylmore
Away with the Faeries ‘Widdershins’* – an exhibition of art work by the country’s internationally renowned mythic and magical artists ‘Widdershins’ is an exhibition of art works by a group of celebrated mythical and fantasy artists. These include Alan Lee, the conceptual designer for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films, and Brian Froud, the creator of internationally bestselling books including ‘Good Faeries/Bad Faeries’ and ‘Lady Cottington’s Pressed Fairy Book’. The art work ranges from earthy to ethereal, from sensual to spiritual, and haunting to whimsical. It includes paintings, sculptures, assemblages, magical clocks, hand-bound books and more. Alongside the exhibition is a programme of exciting themed events for adults and children including artists’ talks, book signings, storytelling, puppetry, music, and children’s entertainment. The show runs from Saturday, 22 June to Wednesday, 7 August, 2013. Entry is free. The Green Hill Arts Gallery is open from 10am-4pm weekly from Tuesday to Sunday (closed on Mondays). NEWS FROM ST MICHAELS The Annual Flower and Music Festival takes place between Wednesday 26th June 2013 Sunday 30th June 2013 , culminating with a 'Songs of Praise service on Sunday 30th June at 18.30 hours. The theme this year is 'Inspiring Women through the Ages'. There will be 44 floral arrangements on display with daytime and evening concerts throughout the festival. Free admission and refreshments available, doors open 10.00 hours Wednesday - Saturday. For the TEAM event this year, we have arranged a concert on Saturday 6th July 2013 featuring The Teign Piano Trio. This is themed as a Traditional English Afternoon Tea event. The music is very traditional, piano, cello and violin playing tunes from the 30's and 40's, 'proper leaf tea', home-made scones and cakes served during the interval. This is a free event but a charge will be made for refreshments. Please look out for posters with further details nearer the event. It will be nice to see as many people as possible attend these events and engaging with events held throughout the team ministry.
