The Vicarage Bishopsteignton Dear Friends, Q. The wisest person in history? A. King Solomon? - as in “the wisdom of Solomon”... attested by the adjudication he gave over which of two women’s claim to be a baby’s real mother was true (see 1 Kings 3.16ff ). Well, a prayer from that time ends, “...and Lord, would you disregard the prayers of travellers. Amen.” At first glance, that doesn’t seem wise in a tourist location – which it wasn’t then, of course, but rather, a nation dependent on breeding good horses for export and for its army’s crack chariot divisions. Horses need lush pastures of green grass, which require rain to irrigate. Travellers prefer it dry. An obvious conflict of interests... Do prayers prayed, like votes cast, cancel each other out? How should God prioritise his answers? Obviously, according to our needs as travellers. Or farmers. This month, when many people will be travelling to and from south Devon on holiday, and when the farmers are needing particular weather conditions on their farms, it would be wise to pray a prayer of trust in God’s greatest wisdom and goodness to all. God has provided us with the words, when Jesus taught his followers to pray, “Our Father in heaven... Your will be done on earth... give us today our daily bread...” The key to Solomon’s wisdom was in his reliance on God’s goodness in all things - whatever the weather. It can be the key to our wisdom too. With love, Stephen. LUTON ALTAR FLOWERS AND BRASS CLEANING July K. Vooght August J. CHRISTIAN AID WEEK Thank you to all who gave to Christian Aid Week this year and to all our collectors. This year we raised a total of £364.44 which will go to help some of the poorest people in the world. This total is slightly more than last year, despite not having collectors in some of our outlying areas. We also give thanks for all those who dedicate their lives to helping others out of poverty and we pray for all those who will benefit from this money If you would like to become a collector please contact me on 854869... DEVON OPEN STUDIOS 2013 Paul Freestone, Angie Carter-Woodwark and Oliver Lucas will be exhibiting and working in St Mary`s Parish Church from Saturday, September 7th until Sunday September 22nd. The exhibition will be open from 10-5pm every day, with refreshments served in the Village Hall on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons, from 2pm. Last year was a great success, with funds raised for St Mary’s, the artists` work in a draw, donations, and refreshments. The artists will again be offering original work in a draw and the tickets will be sold during the exhibition and through the September newsletter. Paul, Ollie and myself would like to thank Stephen and the P.C.C for this very special venue. Last year we welcomed many visitors from near and far, many of whom had never visited Ideford before. It became a real community event, with a great band of volunteers, baking and serving teas, led by Janet Aylmore, who has agreed to do the same this year Thank you Janet! enjoyed exhibiting and sharing our work with everyone who came to St Mary`s and look forward to doing the same this year. The exhibition opening this year will coincide with the Summer Fayre, so it should be a great day for the Parish! We look forward to seeing you all in September. Angie, Paul and Ollie

PARISH OPEN DAY- SATURDAY 22nd JUNE On behalf of the Parish Council, I would like to thank everybody who took time to come and record their thoughts on the future of our Parish. The response was very positive and we can now take stock of all your comments; these will be available on the website after they have been collated and discussed in Council. We hope to be able to move forward from your responses and, with your input and participation, build a framework for the future. Thank you to the councillors who were able to attend, and to all those Parishioners who baked and served refreshments, that certainly made conversation flow in a relaxed atmosphere! We look forward to seeing you at the next Parish Council meeting on Wednesday, July 3rd, this will be the last council meeting until September. Thank You, Angie C.W Ideford Parish Council TOUR OF BRITAIN Stage Six of this year’s Tour on Friday 20th September will start in Sidmouth and finish at Haytor in Dartmoor National Park, as the race celebrates its tenth anniversary. Devon will be making history by hosting the first ever summit finish in the modern era of the race. But the 96 world class riders will also face two other gruelling SKODA King of the Mountains climbs between Starcross and Telegraph Hill, as well as Six Mile Hill on Dartmoor. There will also be fast-paced action at the Yodel Sprints which will be held outside Blundell’s School in Tiverton and in Exeter High Street. One other intermediate Yodel Sprint is also still to be confirmed. The route will cover around 85 miles (137 km) of the county and will take in communities including Honiton, Tiverton, Exeter, Moretonhampstead and Bovey Tracey, before the challenging climax in Dartmoor National Park. HORSE TAMPERING CONCERNS Someone is tampering with a horse in Ideford and causing the owner a great deal of stress and concern. This tampering has become more frequent and the horse has now been injured. The person doing this knows and is obviously confident with horses, which makes it all the more concerning when they must understand what affect it has on the owner and indeed the horse. It isn’t a game or fun to do what is being done to this animal. However, the owner is taking measures so that if the culprit visits again they will become known and action will be taken. If you have any information please call the numbers below. The season also sees an increase in cycling along the lovely lanes and roads of Devon. However, I am receiving reports of impatience and inconsideration. If you are cycling on a narrow lane be sure not to impede the flow of traffic by riding 2 or more abreast. This causes impatience and intolerance and puts both rider and driver at risk. Drivers should also give consideration to cyclists and not put them at risk by ill-considered overtaking, driving too close and pulling out of junctions without care. Let both groups enjoy the ride/drive. We have had a number of bike thefts from the area; some of which had been locked. It is worth investing in a good quality U lock and use this to secure your bike to something solid. If possible keep your bike locked in the garage or shed or at least out of sight and locked. Stay safe and take care. PCSO Colin Rider (contact details on page 4) BISHOPSTEIGNTON PRE SCHOOL PLAYGROUP Following a very successful and busy year at the Pre School, spaces have now become available for new children who wish to start in September. The Pre School is a charity and run by a dedicated and well qualified team of staff. Rated as 'Good' in all areas by Ofsted, the Pre School is open from 9am to 3pm Monday to Friday. Currently morning, afternoon and lunchtime sessions are available. If you would like more information or if you would like to arrange a visit please contact Debbie Cornish - Manager on 01626 777672. Un weekend en Bretagne! Bishopsteignton twinners returned to the village on Bank Holiday Monday (27th May), following a successful and highly enjoyable long weekend with their Breton counterparts. It is difficult to think of something original to include in the programmes for such trips, but the twinning committee in La Roche Maurice managed just that by arranging a visit to the Oceanopolis facility in nearby Brest. Laid out in three pavilions – Polar, Tropical and Temperate – Oceanopolis provides a mine of information about every imaginable creature living in or by the sea, in a format which proved popular with young and old alike. Twinners were able to see cute penguins and not so cute sharks at close quarters and learn about colourful fossils and fish found in every part of the world. The guided tour in English took 2 ½ hours, but time passed very quickly with so much to see and enjoy. The weekend also provided plenty of opportunity to do what twinning groups do best – indulge in too much food and wine. Particularly impressive was the communal meal on the Saturday evening, which showcased the best of Brittany. Local fish and shellfish were served on a bed of sauerkraut. It was an unusual combination, but it really worked and drew many a compliment from seasoned twinners. The whole event had a nautical theme, with sea shanties sung (in French and English) after the meal and all twinners entering into the spirit of the evening by dressing up as sailors and pirates. Further information on Bishopsteignton Twinning is available on the village website at www.bishopsteignton.org.uk ROAD CLOSURE - Marsdon Farm Bridge, Luton With effect from August 12th 2013, SWH will be undertaking essential repair works at the above location on behalf of Devon County Council. The work is scheduled up until August 23rd. THANK YOU! Thank you to everyone who donated blankets, plastic bags and dog’s beds to the Cinnamon Trust kennels in North Devon. Both the Manageress and the animals are very pleased with their gifts. Future donations also appreciated – it’s never too late! blankets especially wanted and I am available to collect from anyone in the village. Many thanks - Angela (01626 859599)
