THE ACADEMIC

“From when he first commenced fast work in the Spring of his 2-year-old year, Romanised showed that precocity, speed and class that were the hallmarks of his racing career.
His biggest attributes were his superior cruising speed and an electric turn of foot. Coupled with his impeccable physique, he is possessed of many of the prerequisites to be a success at stud.”

Welcome to Day 1 of Dublin Racing Festival 2022. There is a top quality day of racing today with four Grade 1 races, a leading Grade 2 bumper and two competitive handicaps. Todays feature race, the Paddy Power Irish Gold Cup promises to be another thrilling contest and we are very grateful for the support of Paddy Power
Welcome to Bulmers Live @ Leopardstown. We have an eight race card for you this evening with top class racing on display, with the Group 2 Romanised Minstrel Stakes, the Group 3 Jockey Club of Turkey Silver Flash Stakes and Group 3 Japan Racing Association Tyros Stakes.
for this and the two supporting handicap races.
We also welcome the return of full crowds to Leopardstown for the first time since Dublin Racing Festival 2020. We are delighted to have racing fans back to experience National Hunt racing at Leopardstown and look forward to seeing everyone, without you, there has been a huge void at racing for the past two years.
As with our spectators, our sponsors are integral to our racedays and we are very thankful for the support of Nathaniel Lacy & Partners Solicitors, Racing TV, and Goffs today, many of whom have supported Dublin Racing Festival since its inception. The continued support of all of todays sponsors have ensured we can continue to deliver competitive racing on what has become a marquee festival in the National Hunt calendar in only it’s fifth year as a festival.
Today’s card showcases the international network of the horse racing and breeding industry with the Jockey Club of Turkey, The Japan Racing Association, The Hipódromo De La Zarzuela and The Horseraces Single Member S.A. Of Greece represented. This is with thanks to Irish Thoroughbred Marketing (ITM). International partners are an important avenue to promote the breeding, sale and success of Irish horse racing worldwide.
The Group 2 Romanised Minstrel Stakes has been temporarily moved from The Curragh to Leopardstown Racecourse due to heavy rainfall earlier in the week. We are delighted to be able to facilitate the running of this great race. Past winners include Gordon Lord Byron, Romanised who the race is named after, and Order of Australia. We look forward to seeing the next top class horse to emerge. 11 runners go to post.
We want to emphasise to all those attending, that although government restrictions relating to Covid-19 have been eased, we continue to encourage diligence and ask everyone to be mindful of others and continue best practice in relation to hand sanitising and masked wearing in crowded areas.
HRI Racecourses recently unveiled a primary partnership with Bulmers Ireland where they will become the Official Entertainment Partner of HRI Racecourses with the aim of enhancing all racegoers experience across our four racecourses at Leopardstown, Fairyhouse, Navan and Tipperary, the first manifestation of this is at Dublin Racing Festival and we are looking forward to seeing Mundy and his band playing live on stage in the Bulmers Secret Orchard Marquee after racing today.
We enter the second leg of the ‘Dublin to Bahrain’ race series, in partnership with the Bahrain Turf Club. The initiative grants the race winners automatic eligibility for the 2023-24 running of the Bahrain Turf Series. We hope that trainers and owners from all over Ireland will target these races and we will look forward to following the winners’ progress in the Bahrain Turf Series later in the year.
Should you require any assistance throughout the day, or notice anything that is not to your satisfaction, please don’t hesitate to bring it to the attention of myself or a member of the Leopardstown Staff. We hope you have a enjoyable day at Leopardstown Racecourse with us today.
Many thanks to The Irish EBF for their continual support at Leopardstown. Their contribution to Irish Horse Racing is very significant and important to the whole industry.

The wellbeing of horses is integral to the thoroughbred racehorse industry. Racecourses play their part through adherence to a clear set of industry standards. Prior to each race meeting an independent track inspection is carried out by an IHRB accredited “Clerk of the Course”. This individual will check all equine facilities, including ground conditions, railing, stables and veterinary care facilities. All racecourses must meet the required standards to be granted a licence to race.
At every race meeting a team of equine veterinary surgeons supervise the wellbeing of horses. All racecourse vets must be members of the Association of Irish Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons (AIRVS) and will have received specialist training in the field of racecourse work.
The IHRB Veterinary Officer at each meeting has responsibilities including:
• Horse Identification - achieved through checking their microchip numbers against those recorded in their passports.
• Drug Testing - a process is vital to ensure the integrity of the sport.
• General oversight of horse care and wellbeing.
• Provision of advice to the Stewards, on veterinary matters. A racecourse vet will check horses at the start for each race. If they deem any horse unfit to race at this point, they have the authority to withdraw the horse. During the race the vets follow on, within the convoy of vehicles seen on the service road. Other vehicles in this convoy include doctors, paramedics and ground-staff. This whole team will swing into action if any incident occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse or jockey receiving treatment. This allows the veterinary or medical teams some privacy to fully assess the casualty. Racegoers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured participant.
The Blue Cross Horse Ambulance are also present every meeting, the service is operated by skilled personnel using specially equipped horse ambulances. They work to support the Veterinary Team. They respond swiftly to any incidents involving injured horses and transport them off the racetrack for specialist veterinary care if required.
The presentation of the horses on race day reflects the preparation at home. The results of good feeding, good housing, good health, and good wellbeing are clear to see when a horse appears at the races bright-eyed with a gleaming coat and a spring in their step. Raceday is great opportunity for the public to observe the high standards of care given to these horses.
All horses are accompanied on raceday by their own dedicated stable staff. These skilled people will have spent many months and sometimes years preparing their horses for the raceday. They lavish care and attention, day in, day out, in all weathers, and the industry is extremely proud of these excellent individuals. They help maintain Ireland’s position as an international leader in the thoroughbred breeding, training, and racing industry, ensuring best-in-class integrity and equine welfare standards.

Having looked a classy sort when making an impressive C&D debut last month WALTHAM can confirm that promise here, he holds a Ballyroan Stakes entry next month. Cape Bridgewater looks a threat in receipt of 8lb, while the unexposed Rapparee Champ is a potential improver. [Alan Hewison] Source: Racing Post
