On Wednesday 21st May, Brookfield held a World Cultural Diversity Day It provided an opportunity to celebrate the many diverse ethnicities within our school community. This special day provided a wonderful opportunity for our children to learn about and appreciate the rich tapestry of cultures that make up our world and our school.
One of the highlights of the day was seeing our pupils proudly dress up in their traditional clothes, showcasing the beauty and variety of their cultural heritages. The excitement in the air was palpable as children shared stories and learned from one another
We were also incredibly fortunate to have parents come into their child's class to share a story, some information, or an interesting aspect of their culture These personal insights enriched the day's learning, making the experience even more meaningful and engaging for the children. It also developed links with our community. This initiative helps pupils both to understand other cultural heritages, and also to feel a sense of belonging within the school, as they have the opportunity to celebrate their own cultural heritage, and to feel that this aspect of who they are is valued within their school and within the trust as a whole It allowed us to celebrate individuality and ensure that all members of our school community feel safe, secure, valued, and of equal worth. A big thank you to Mrs Etherington for organising this successful day

Esther Jones is the Director of Music for St Giles and St George's, is very involved in Surrey Arts Music Hub, and was the Lead for our Dorking Halls event this year
We were fortunate to have Esther visit West Ashtead to lead a range of singing workshops across the school. This started with a whole school assembly where the children enjoyed rhythm games and singing in a round
Following this, Esther worked with each class and incorporated singing, games, and musical movement in outdoor ‘Singing picnics’. With her extensive knowledge of traditional songs from around the world, the classes learned age-appropriate short songs with clapping rhythms or African Call and Response songs, all unaccompanied
Esther quickly gauged the level of musical talent within West Ashtead pupils and matched the lesson accordingly so that every class had a bespoke Singing Picnic With our enthusiastic Year 5 pupils, she directed them so that they were singing, clapping, and learning the basic steps of country line dancing The children loved it and did not realise how much learning they were achieving because they were too busy having fun

Eighteen Year 6 children from schools across LEO Academy Trust made their way to the USA, where they spent just over a week in San Francisco, California as part of the prestigious Turing Scheme. This half term, Reception had their most exciting day yet; a quick trip to sunny Spain! After reading our story of the week, 'The Singing Mermaid' the children began preparing for their latest adventure We learnt all about the importance of a passport and boarding passes when going on holiday and we carefully created our own for the flight with Cheam Park Farm Airways The morning of the flight, the children couldn't wait to come through the door with their suitcases at the ready. They patiently waited in line at the airport, ensuring they were able to tell airport security how old they were and where they were flying to that day.
After a quick safety briefing and a smooth take off, the children were given a 5* dining experience with a range of tropical fruits to choose from. Although it was a noisy flight, we soon landed and made our ways to our hotels! The children's hotels were top of the line; with three swimming pools, all inclusive soft drinks, a sprinkler and a huge range of outdoor activities. After a few hours in the sunshine, the children enjoyed a gourmet meal prepared by our wonderful catering team and were ready for the afternoon activities, which included a silent disco, sports-lead games and a cinema to chillax in!

Overall it was a wonderfully enriching day for the children and our Trip Advisor reviews were fantastic, with one little one announcing to his friends "This was my favourite day ever!"

Our second Emotional Wellbeing Fayre, held on Thursday 15th May 2025, during Mental Health Week, successfully brought together a wealth of resources and support for the mental health and well-being of our entire school community. This event highlighted our ongoing commitment to addressing emotional wellbeing, especially given the identified needs within our community, such as the increase in family challenges and emotional problems, Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) cases on the SEND register, the impact of the cost of living and attendance difficulties for SEND children
The fayre featured engaging interactive stalls and valuable resources, empowering our families to prioritise their well-being and connect with crucial local support services. Numerous local charities and organisations generously participated, offering vital information and guidance to our school families
The positive impact of the fayre on families within our school is significant. As the summer term draws to a close, the children at Polesden Lacey Infant Academy have been enjoying a truly enriching experience with their weekly Forest School sessions. Nestled within the beautiful natural surroundings of Polesden Lacey, these outdoor adventures have provided an incredible opportunity for our young learners to connect with nature, develop essential life skills, and simply have a tremendous amount of fun!
Throughout the summer term, our pupils, across all year groups, have embraced the Forest School ethos of childled, hands-on learning in a natural setting. This unique approach allows children the freedom to explore, take supported risks, and follow their own curiosities, fostering a deep love and respect for the outdoor environment.
Some of the exciting activities and discoveries this term have included:
Nature Exploration: Children have been keen naturalists, observing local wildlife, identifying different trees and plants, and learning about the mini-beast inhabitants of our woodland. From fascinating spiders to busy ants, fabulous fungi to busy bees, every discovery sparks wonder and encourages scientific inquiry.
Creative Construction: Budding engineers and architects have been hard at work, collaborating to build incredible dens and shelters using natural materials found in the woodland.
Tool Use and Crafting: Under careful supervision, pupils have had the chance to learn safe ways to use simple tools for activities like whittling and creating natural art
Cooking up a storm: Using foraged lilac and elderflower the children have made cordials over the fire, mixed them with water and then tried them

The benefits of these Forest School sessions extend far beyond the outdoor classroom We have seen a noticeable impact on our pupils' confidence, resilience, and social skills. Children who might be quieter in a traditional classroom setting often flourish in the Forest School environment, finding their voice and demonstrating impressive leadership qualities.
We look forward to many more terms of wild adventures and wonderful learning in our fantastic Forest School!

It has been a truly remarkable period for English across the LEO Academy Trust this term. The dedication and exceptional talent within our schools have led to outstanding achievements for every pupil.
Firstly, congratulations to all schools within the Trust for their truly phenomenal Year 1 Phonics results and End of Key Stage 2 SATs outcomes These results were exceptional across the board, but particularly shone in the critical areas of English Reading, Writing, and Grammar. Incredibly, many of our schools not only met but significantly outperformed the National Average in these key subjects. This success is a direct testament to the rigorous and high-quality teaching and learning that permeates our classrooms daily.

Further cementing the Trust's reputation for excellence, we celebrated outstanding OFSTED reviews for both Cheam Park Farm and Manor Park Primary Academies. Both schools were deservedly awarded 'Outstanding in All Areas', a tremendous recognition of their holistic commitment to pupil development The inspectors particularly highlighted the strength of their Early Reading, Phonics provision, and the consistently high quality of their English lessons. These findings underscore how effectively these schools ensure all pupils develop the rigour and foundational skills necessary to thrive academically and beyond
Showcasing a light on one of our schools, at Hurst Park Primary Academy, a group of our Key Stage 1 children recently participated in a fantastic writing day led by the brilliant author, Coral Rumble As one of the celebrated writers for the popular CBeebies TV programmes, ‘Poetry Pie’ and ‘The Rhyme Rocket’, and the creator of the Pinkasaurus stories on CBeebies Radio, Coral brought a unique energy and expertise to the day. During the 'A I M High Writing Day', pupils engaged deeply with both the writing and reading of poems, exploring poetry as an oral art form and relishing the opportunity to perform their creations to an appreciative audience. Such experiences ignite a lifelong passion for language and creativity, which is central to our English vision.
Finally, as we look towards the next academic year, the recent release of the updated Writing Framework offers a timely opportunity for reflection and refinement. The framework places a strong emphasis on the importance of reading and writing, promoting explicit teaching of vocabulary and grammar within authentic writing contexts. It highlights the importance of regular opportunities for pupils to write at length, to revise and edit their work, and to understand the purpose and audience of their writing.

Here are a few top tips and suggestions for schools as we embrace the guidance within the new Writing Framework:
Deepen the Reading-Writing Connection: Ensure that writing tasks are intrinsically linked to texts read in class, allowing pupils to draw on rich vocabulary, sentence structures, and authorial craft.
Prioritise Talk for Writing: Dedicate ample time for pupils to discuss ideas, rehearse sentences orally, and articulate their thoughts before putting pen to paper
Explicit Grammar and Vocabulary Instruction: Integrate the teaching of grammatical concepts and sophisticated vocabulary directly into writing lessons, demonstrating their impact on clarity and effect.
Develop a Culture of Revision: Encourage pupils to see writing as an iterative process, valuing revision and editing as opportunities for improvement rather than simply correcting errors. Provide clear models and strategies for self and peer assessment.
Authentic Purpose and Audience: Wherever possible, provide pupils with real reasons to write, whether it's for a school newspaper, a presentation to another class, or a letter to a local charity.
The accomplishments of this past period are a testament to the talent and tireless efforts of our pupils, staff, and leadership teams As we prepare for the new academic year, I am confident that by embracing these insights and continuing to foster a love of English, we will build upon this phenomenal success and empower every LEO Academy Trust pupil to become a confident, articulate, and skilled communicator.

It’s been another busy term of maths across LEO Academy Trust.
Children in Years 4 and 5 recently participated in the Wondermaths Challenge, an exciting competition designed to motivate young mathematicians with problem-based activities and fast-paced mental arithmetic tasks Through their involvement, the students not only gained valuable mathematical skills but also experienced immense enjoyment and a renewed enthusiasm for the subject.
Maths Week London focused this year on History- in particular, the historians Ada Lovelace and Albert Einstein. Children from across the Trust took part in a competition to bring these mathematical historians to life- have a look at some of their work below:

The week saw children studying different historical mathematical structures, such as Roman Numerals, the Mayan number systems, as well as ordering important world events according to the year they happened It is always valuable to bring maths outside of the classroom and relate it to the world we live in
As always, staff were part of the half termly TRGs with London South West Maths Hub This term focused on Mastering Number, ahead of the introduction and roll out of the Year 3 Mastering Number resources.
It’s been a fantastic year of learning for staff and children across the Trust. Have a great summer and be sure to check back in in September at @LEO maths.

At LEO Academy Trust, the arts are not an afterthought they are a powerful foundation for building creative, confident and compassionate citizens ready to thrive in a complex world. In a climate where the arts are often under threat, we remain committed to placing artistic expression at the heart of our curriculum, not simply for the love of it (though we do love it), but because of its proven impact on wellbeing, identity, and lifelong learning. This year, the corridors, classrooms and halls across our schools have come alive with music, movement, paint, and poetry In the process, our children have not only refined technical skills, but found their voice, taken creative risks, and learned to reflect on themselves and the world around them.
Our use of the AccessArt curriculum has continued to challenge and inspire pupils to think critically and explore creatively. But more than that, it has enabled young people to see themselves as artists Whether creating sculpture, sketching from observation, exploring materials or building installation-style group pieces pupils have built confidence, resilience, and the ability to express complex emotions through their work

A highlight of the term was LEO Arts Week, a Trustwide celebration where schools opened their doors to parents and carers, transforming spaces into galleries of creativity From the emotive exhibitions at West Ashtead to the vibrant showcases at Cheam Common Juniors and Shawley, the events were a testament to the hard work of pupils and staff and a clear demonstration of how the arts can unite communities
We were also proud to take part in the national AccessArt Chorus, with pupils creating personal messages about what art means to them. These were displayed across our school corridors, forming a powerful collective voice for creativity.
This year has also seen our pupils gain wider recognition beyond the school walls. We were thrilled to have students win the prestigious Fourth

school in the Trust to begin or continue their Artsmark journey
This has also been a remarkable year for music across the Trust Our pupils have performed on some of the country’s most inspiring stages from the Young Voices Concert at the O2 Arena to the Fairfield Halls summer concert, where children performed confidently on ukulele, recorder, brass and string instruments to an audience of proud families
Music is not only heard in our concert halls but felt in our classrooms every day From whole-class instrumental tuition to lively choir rehearsals and world music workshops, our offer is broad, ambitious and inclusive. We aim to nurture musical curiosity in all its forms from improvisation to performance, composition to cultural appreciation so that children leave us with a well-rounded understanding of music and the confidence to keep going
This year ’ s Surrey Primary Music Festival and our partnership with Sutton Music Trust have further elevated what’s possible, giving children the chance to shine both individually and as part of something bigger than themselves.

The arts at LEO are not extra they are essential They build empathy, foster independence, and allow every child to find meaning, purpose and joy in their learning. In a world that increasingly demands creativity, collaboration and compassion, we believe that offering a rich, meaningful arts education is not only valuable it’s urgent
Looking ahead, we ’ re excited to expand even further Plans are already in motion to collaborate with inspiring schools such as Epsom College and King’s College on joint creative projects. We’ll continue to develop student voice through Arts Councils, giving children ownership over their creative environment. We aim to strengthen teacher knowledge through targeted CPD and expand our network of creative partnerships to provide even more cultural capital opportunities for all pupils, regardless of background.

This year, our Forest School has truly come alive with the energy and enthusiasm of our pupils. We've witnessed incredible personal growth, developed vital skills, and fostered a deep connection with the natural world Here are just some of the highlights that have made this year so special:
Mastering the Elements:
Our children have bravely embraced all weathers, proving that rain or shine, there's always an adventure to be had. From building shelters to keep dry in sudden downpours to discovering the joy of mud kitchen creations after a good soaking, their resilience has been truly inspiring
Fire-Starting Fun:
A true highlight for many has been the careful and responsible learning of fire lighting. From gathering tinder and kindling to striking a flint and steel, the children have demonstrated incredible focus and teamwork to get those crackling fires going, culminating in delicious toasted marshmallows or popcorn.
Tool Use:
Under careful supervision, our pupils have learned to safely use a variety of tools, from bow saws for cutting wood to potato peelers for preparing natural materials. They've crafted beautiful natural art, created imaginative stick figures, and even worked together on larger projects like building a sturdy bug hotel - a fantastic achievement in collaborative construction!
Den Building Extravaganza:
The creativity and engineering skills showcased during our den building sessions have been phenomenal. From simple lean-tos to elaborate, multi-room structures, the children have worked together, problem-solved, and developed their understanding of natural materials and their properties.

Signs of Spring:
With the weather warming up, our children have been keen explorers, searching for the tell-tale signs of spring We've spotted bright yellow daffodils and crocuses pushing through the soil and tiny buds appearing on trees and bushes.
Sensory Explorations:
We've encouraged all our Forest Schoolers to engage all their senses. From listening to the rustle of leaves and the chirping of birds, to feeling the texture of bark and cool moss, their awareness of their surroundings has deepened.
Developing Teamwork and Confidence:
Beyond the practical skills, Forest School has been a powerful catalyst for personal development. We've seen shy children blossom, confident leaders emerge, and friendships flourish as they navigate challenges and celebrate successes together. The emphasis on child-led exploration has fostered a wonderful sense of independence and self-belief
Adventures at Wisley:
All our schools have visited the RHS Garden Wisley this year, a truly enriching experience for everyone. Each visit offered new discoveries and deepened our understanding of the plant world. We have:
Explored diverse plant habitats:
Wandering through the different zones at Wisley, from the stunning Glasshouse with its tropical wonders to the serene Rock Garden, opened our eyes to the incredible variety of plant life on our planet.
Engaged in hands-on workshops:
The educational team at Wisley provided fantastic opportunities for our children to get their hands dirty. We've planted seeds, learned about plant life cycles, and even participated in fascinating science experiments exploring how plants absorb water
As we close this chapter, we eagerly anticipate another year of outdoor adventures, new discoveries, and continued growth at Forest School We wish everyone a wonderful summer break filled with nature, play, and exploration!

Exciting things are blossoming at Shawley School, particularly for its Year 2 children , who are at the heart of an inspiring "Wilder Schools" project! The school is thrilled to announce the creation of a brand new Shawley Garden, a vibrant space that will not only enhance the school grounds but also provide invaluable hands-on learning experiences for all pupils
This ambitious project is a collaborative effort with the Surrey Wildlife Trust, and it's fantastic to see the vision for a greener, wilder school come to life. Under the expert guidance of Harriet from Wilder Schools and Shawley’s Science Lead, Mrs Rusbridge, the garden is rapidly taking shape.
A key focus of the new garden is wildflower planting. These native blooms will attract essential pollinators like bees and butterflies, boosting biodiversity right here on our doorstep. But it's not just about wildflowers; Shawley is also dedicating space to growing vegetables, giving children the incredible opportunity to learn about where their food comes from, nurturing plants from seed to harvest

The entire school community has been involved in making this garden a reality. Children from across all year groups have been busy decorating pebbles that will form a beautiful, unique pathway winding through the garden Their creativity and enthusiasm have truly brightened the space! A huge thank you is also extended to the dedicated Shawley Fundraisers, who have been instrumental in building sturdy raised planters, providing the perfect foundation for our planting efforts
Shawley is also absolutely delighted to share that its commitment to this project has been recognised with a generous £2000 grant from Toyota This significant award will be instrumental in supporting the ongoing development and sustainability of the Shawley Garden, giving the opportunity to expand planting, introduce new features, and continue to provide rich educational experiences for years to come
This "Wilder Schools" project is more than just a garden; it's a living classroom where the children can connect with nature, understand ecological principles, and develop a sense of responsibility for their environment. We can't wait to watch the Shawley Garden flourish and see the incredible learning and joy it brings to the children

LEO Academy Trust recently welcomed colleagues from Greenhill Primary in Bury and Haydon Abbey School in Aylesbury on 16th June for a highly successful Challenge Partners SEND Developmental Peer Review. The collaborative visit, expertly facilitated by Mrs. Smallwood, LEO SEND Director and a Lead Facilitator for Challenge Partners SEND Developmental Peer Reviews, provided an invaluable opportunity to showcase the Trust's exemplary inclusive practices. Mrs. Smallwood had previously visited Greenhill and Haydon Abbey earlier in the year, fostering a reciprocal exchange of knowledge and expertise.
The review commenced at Manor Park Primary, where the visitors gained deep insight into the Trust's innovative mental health triage process. Ms. Thomas eloquently detailed the development of this crucial process, highlighting its evolution in direct response to community needs, with Mrs Webb and Ms. Laing both having played instrumental roles in its design and implementation over a sustained period of time.
A comprehensive walk-through of Manor Park followed, with an extended period spent observing the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Here, colleagues were "in awe " of the provision, witnessing the seamless freeflow of 90 pupils, including many with very high needs. Visitors particularly noted that all children were purposefully engaged, their diverse needs meticulously catered for, and were profoundly impressed by the exceptional behaviour demonstrated by pupils throughout the school.
In the afternoon, Ms. Townsend graciously hosted the visiting colleagues at Brookfield Primary. Here, the calm classroom environments and the thoughtfully designed new classroom layouts and furniture were much admired. The visitors also praised the excellent OT and sensory room facilities available in both Manor Park and Brookfield, recognising their vital role in meeting the sensory, physical, and emotional needs of pupils.

Ms. Townsend further enriched the visit by presenting a compelling case study of a pupil with high needs, illustrating their journey to achieving regulation through appropriate provision and the meticulous planning of a personalised curriculum. This impressive work was strongly supported by the Trust's SENDCo and Autism Champion, Mrs. Kilkelly. Discussions also encompassed the extensive support provided by the Inclusion team to all schools within the Trust, building on previous conversations about the use of forensic assessments as part of the Assess, Plan, Do, Review process
Technology also featured prominently, with visitors taking particular note of how Chromebooks are effectively utilised, highlighting tools such as Mote, Read & Write, and OrbitNote for their assistive capabilities.
A heartfelt thank you extends to all colleagues at both Manor Park and Brookfield who generously gave of their valuable time to support this highly successful Challenge Partners SEND Developmental Peer Review Their dedication and the outstanding provision on display underscore LEO Academy Trust's commitment to leading the way in inclusive education and fostering an environment where every child can thrive

As well as this, LEO Academy Trust's Inclusion Team recently delivered a truly inspiring presentation at the Attachment Research Community Regional Conference , earning recognition at a regional level for the team’s innovative and impactful work Mrs Webb, Trust Pupil Well-being Champion and Mrs. Clark, Trust Inclusion Principal led a brilliant session that showcased the Trust's journey in embedding relational approaches within their educational framework
Attendees were particularly impressed by the tangible ideas and takeaways provided, with many expressing their interest in implementing these strategies in their own settings The presentation offered practical insights into fostering strong relationships within schools, highlighting the profound difference such approaches can make for pupils and their families
Feedback from the conference was overwhelmingly positive. Sara Martin, Deputy Head teacher of Sutton Virtual School, enthusiastically remarked, "It was phenomenal!!! You shared your journey to embedding relational approaches and gave ideas and takeaways for the audience, which was really helpful " The powerful "sound bites" shared during the presentation resonated deeply with the audience, with many finding them genuinely emotional. These moments perfectly underscored the wonderful impact the Inclusion Team has on pupils and their families, an impact that extends far beyond their time at school
The presentation was hailed as an exceptional showcase of the excellent work undertaken and colleagues from other local authorities and the ARC team specifically commented on the extensive and innovative work being done. This regional recognition is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the entire Inclusion Team Their commitment to providing excellent support and provision is clearly making a significant difference, reinforcing LEO Academy Trust's position as a leader in inclusive education.
This regional recognition follows significant achievements within the Trust's academies This year, all LEO Sutton academies participated in the Building Strong Foundations project, spearheaded by the Sutton Virtual School, and proudly secured a Silver award for their efforts A standout among them, Manor Park Primary achieved a Gold award for its consistently embedded relational and trauma-informed approach –a true testament to unwavering commitment to student well-being
Meanwhile, the Trust's Surrey academies have also been diligently advancing their expertise through the SAATIS project.
