As we near the end of the Autumn term, it is a wonderful time to reflect on the incredible achievements in English across our Trust. From glowing Ofsted reports to innovative uses of technology, LEO Academy Trust continues to lead the way in providing a rich and engaging English curriculum for all our pupils.
Across each of our LEO Schools, teachers and pupils within Upper Key Stage 2 have embarked on an exciting journey refining their use with OLEX AI, a cutting-edge tool that provides instant feedback, marking, and tailored responses, encouraging collaborative learning and rapid progress in writing. Both teachers and pupils have responded positively to this tool, especially within its ability to generate AI-based images and transform stories into published class books.
Earlier this term, we were delighted to host whole-trust training for principals and staff at Manor Park, focusing on three key benefits of utilising and embedded OLEX AI within the classroom:
Personalised feedback, focusing on the individual strengths and areas for growth. Empowering pupils to work collaboratively and increasing motivation to improve work Significantly reduction of teacher workload, shifting focus on planning, explicit instructions and targeted in-class pupil support.
1.
Start with clear learning objectives: Ensure pupils understand the purpose and focus of each writing task and the objectives set through the rubric model
2.
Encourage critical evaluation: Teach pupils to assess the feedback provided by OLEX and make informed revisions through effective editing sessions.
3
Nurture collaboration: Use OLEX to facilitate peer feedback and collaborative writing activities.
5.
Embrace experimentation: Encourage pupils to explore the AI-generated images to help further develop and refine their writing outcomes.
4 Provide ongoing support: Offer regular guidance and address any challenges pupils
This year, our Trust focus is on refining Speaking and Listening (Oracy) within English lessons and beyond Throughout each area of the curriculum, we are championing the concept of "Accountable Talk," where pupils are encouraged to engage in purposeful discussions, build on each other's ideas, and use evidence from a range of books and extracts to support their arguments
Here are five top tips to successfully using Accountable Talk in your classrooms:
Establish clear expectations: Define what constitutes effective communication and active listening. 1.
Model Accountable Talk: Demonstrate effective communication strategies in your own interactions. 2.
Provide sentence stems: Offer pupils phrases like "I agree with because..." or "Can you explain more about...?" to structure their responses. 3 Encourage collaborative activities: Use pair and group work to promote discussion and debate, allocating roles, sentence stems and vocabulary banks where appropriate
Provide opportunities for reflection: Encourage pupils to evaluate their own communication skills and set goals for improvement. 5.
By embedding these strategies in our teaching, we can empower our pupils to become confident and articulate communicators, equipped with the skills to thrive in all areas of learning.
This term, pupils in Year 3 at Cheam Fields have been fortunate enough to take part in a special Pen Pals writing project with schools internationally After drafting their first set of letters, the pupils are excited to hear back from their new friends. This is a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to develop their writing skills, learn about a different culture, and make new friends. We look forward to seeing the friendships and learning that blossom from this project.
Finally, a huge congratulations to Cheam Fields Primary Academy, Brookfield Primary Academy, and Shawley Community Primary Academy for their recent Ofsted inspections and the incredibly positive feedback received, particularly in Early Reading, Writing, and the use of Digital Technology These schools exemplify our Trust's commitment to nurturing a love of language and literacy from the earliest years, laying the foundation for future academic success.
Here's to a successful year of continued growth and innovation in English across LEO Academy Trust!
It has been a busy start in mathematics learning at LEO Academy Trust! Teachers have been working hard on maintaining a Teaching for Mastery approach in their mathematics lessons to make learning accessible to ALL children. There have been lots of stem sentences, reasoning, problem solving and mathematical thinking happening in lessons!
The CPA approach is widely embedded in maths lessons to support deep understanding of mathematics and make mathematical connections - one of the 5 Big Ideas of Teaching for Mastery. Technology also continues to be a feature used to assist children with their maths lessons at LEO Academy Trust. From Mathigon and seesaw, LbQ and Century, digital maths platforms are constantly being reviewed and assessed for what is going to provide the best mathematical outcomes for our children
A huge well done to staff and children at Shawley, Cheam Fields and Brookfield for their superb Ofsted inspection outcomes, which all involved a deep look at how Maths is taught at our Trust. The following quote sums up the broad and ambitious maths curriculum that is available to pupils as well as the progression within the subject;
“The school has designed a highly ambitious curriculum. It has carefully thought about what pupils need to know and understand for each of the subject areas. This is completed for the different points in a pupil’s learning journey In mathematics, children in Reception count up to 10 using objects In Year 3, pupils accurately add three-digit numbers, which is then developed further in Year 4, as pupils add four-digit numbers accurately and confidently ” Cheam Fields Ofsted Report, October 2024
LEO Maths Leaders are part of a Mastery Sustaining workgroup with the NCETM Maths Hubs. Their first TRG of the year was hosted by West Ashtead and involved delving deeper into the 5 Big Ideas of Teaching for Mastery. As we continue through the year, we are excited to see how our pupils' artistic journeys evolve Thank you to our incredible staff, parents, and community for supporting the arts across LEO Academy Trust. Together, we are cultivating a generation of confident, expressive, and talented young artists Let’s keep creating, exploring, and celebrating art!
We are thrilled to announce that LEO Academy Trust has forged a dynamic and ever growing partnership with Siltamäki Primary School in Helsinki, Finland! This exciting collaboration was initially sparked by a meeting between Mr Hedger (our CEO) and the award-winning Finnish principal, Anna-Mari Jaatinen, at Bett UK in 2024, thanks to an initial introduction by Dr Fiona Aubrey-Smith. Since then, LEO Academy Trust has embarked on a continuous journey of collaboration and shared learning!
Our partnership with Siltamäki Primary School is off to a flying start, fuelled by a series of engaging virtual networking sessions that began in March 2024. These online meetings have allowed our staff and their Finnish counterparts to connect on a personal and professional level, laying the groundwork for a strong and fruitful collaboration Our dedicated "Cloud Champions" – Mr Lewry, Miss Govier, and Mr Clements – have been instrumental in leading these sessions, sharing their wealth of expertise in digital learning They've been joined by Mrs Shirley (Director of Digital Learning), Mr Hedger (CEO), and Mrs Duley (EA to CEO), creating a dynamic team focused on maximizing the potential of this partnership.
Through these virtual meetings, teachers and staff from all schools have had the chance to get to know one another, explore each other's teaching approaches, and establish a shared vision for the future. Together, we ' ve collaboratively defined our goals for this international collaboration, ensuring we ' re working in unison towards outcomes that benefit all schools. The exchange of best practices in digital learning has been a key focus, with our Cloud Champions and leadership team actively engaged in exploring innovative ways to integrate technology into the classroom. These virtual sessions have not only facilitated knowledge exchange but also fostered a strong sense of community and collaboration between our schools, despite the geographical distance We're excited to continue building on this momentum as our partnership continues to progress.
To ensure our students also benefit directly from this exciting partnership, we ' ve been busy creating opportunities for them to connect with their Finnish peers. On November 22nd, our Year 5 pupils in 5G, led by Miss Govier, had a fantastic virtual meeting with Jonna Räsänen's Grade 5 class at Siltamäki Primary School. This interactive session was a resounding success, with students eagerly engaging in cross-cultural dialogue, learning about each other's lives, and forging new friendships across borders Both classes proudly shared examples of their work, providing insights into different educational approaches and fostering a sense of global learning community. The students also had a chance to discuss the technology and apps they use in their classrooms, discovering new tools and sparking ideas for future learning This virtual meeting provided an invaluable platform for students to practice their communication skills in an authentic and engaging context
This was just the first of many exciting virtual exchanges planned for our students! Year 6 students at Shawley Community Primary, led by Mr Lewry, are eagerly preparing for their virtual meeting with a Grade 6 class in Finland. And that's not all! Mr Clements will also be leading his Year 5 class at Cheam Fields in a virtual meeting with another Grade 5 class at Siltamäki Primary School We believe these cross-cultural connections are incredibly valuable, providing our students with opportunities to develop global citizenship, broaden their horizons, and create lasting memories Imagine the excitement of making new friends across continents, sharing learning experiences, and discovering different perspectives! We can't wait to see these virtual classrooms come alive with international collaboration!
Taking our partnership to the next level, we were thrilled to host our esteemed colleagues from Siltamäki Primary School this December. Anna-Mari Jaatinen (Principal), Emma Tuomola (Special Needs Education Teacher), and Satu Timonen (Class Teacher) immersed themselves in the LEO Academy Trust for two days of enriching knowledge sharing, collaboration, and cultural exchange
Their visit began with a warm welcome at Shawley Community Primary on December 3rd, where Mrs Ashworth (Principal) and Mr Lewry (Class Teacher & Cloud Champion) showcased the vibrant learning environment The day was filled with classroom observations, discussions on teaching practices, and a genuine exchange of ideas
The following day, our Finnish guests experienced the unique atmosphere at both Cheam Common Juniors and Cheam Common Infants. Mrs Gunner (Principal, Cheam Common Juniors), Mrs Hughes (Principal, Cheam Common Infants), Miss Govier, and Mr Clements (Class Teachers & Cloud Champions) provided insightful tours and engaged in stimulating discussions with our visitors, including conversations with staff and students. This provided a valuable opportunity for everyone to observe lessons, share best practices, and gain a deeper understanding of each other's educational approaches
But the learning and sharing didn't stop there! Extending our commitment to cultural exchange beyond the school day, we treated our Finnish guests to a memorable London experience. A delicious dinner and a captivating theatre performance provided the perfect setting for relaxed conversation and a taste of British culture.
This visit marked a significant milestone in our partnership, fostering deeper connections and a richer understanding of each other's educational philosophies. We are confident that this exchange has further strengthened our collaboration and will inspire new ideas and initiatives in the future
This is just the beginning of our exciting journey with Siltamäki Primary School! Our partnership continues to flourish, with plans already in place for a reciprocal visit to Finland in the new year From March 11th-14th, 2025, a delegation of LEO Academy Trust staff will have the opportunity to experience the Finnish education system firsthand at Siltamäki Primary School.
This visit will provide invaluable insights into Finnish educational practices We'll observe classrooms, engage with educators, and learn about the innovative approaches that have made Finland a global leader in education. Beyond the school walls, we hope to experience Finnish culture, explore Helsinki, and gain a deeper understanding of the context in which Siltamäki Primary School thrives. This reciprocal visit will further solidify our partnership, fostering even stronger bonds and paving the way for exciting new collaborative projects in the future. We are incredibly enthusiastic about the future of this partnership and the endless possibilities it holds for our students, staff, and both school communities Stay tuned for updates from our Finnish adventure in March!
Overall, this international connection offers incredible benefits for our pupils and staff. With regards to Global Citizenship, our pupils will develop a broader understanding of the world, different cultures, and perspectives Through collaboration with Finnish educators, this will enhance our teaching practices and prepare students for a globalised world. Finland is renowned for its exceptional education system. We are learning from their innovative approaches to teaching and well-being So, stay tuned! This is just the beginning of our exciting partnership with Siltamäki Primary School. We look forward to sharing more updates and stories from our collaborative adventures in the future.
Autumn has provided a rich learning environment at Forest School, the children have enjoyed a variety of experiences that promote both creativity and practical skills
Den building has encouraged teamwork and problem-solving, while the introduction of tools such as saws and hammers has developed hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills in a safe and supervised setting
Observations of the changing seasons have been incorporated into our sessions, with particular attention paid to leaves and the colour changes. We have also had great fun raking the leaves.
We were also pleased to offer some of our children the opportunity to participate in an educational workshop at RHS Wisley, followed by time to explore the beautiful gardens
To commemorate Remembrance Day, the children created beautiful "God's Eyes" in the style of poppies fostering an understanding of this important occasion.
We have been inspired by the art of Andy Goldsworthy, creating artwork using natural materials The creation of lavender bags has allowed for exploration of materials and their uses.
The children have also been actively involved in the upkeep of our Forest School environment, taking on the responsibility of clearing fallen leaves from the pond
Further activities this term have included fire lighting and cooking on the fire, to potion making using our senses, which encouraged imaginative play and exploration of natural resources
We believe that Forest School provides invaluable opportunities for children to develop confidence, resilience and a connection with the natural world

At LEO Academy Trust the Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSAs) play a pivotal role in addressing identified emotional and social needs within our schools Through their dedicated work with small groups of children, ELSAs facilitate the development of specific emotional and social skills identified through the use of emotional screeners as well as referrals from a range of staff; senior leaders, SENDCO, Class teacher, and outside agencies
The Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) programme is a training programme for school staff that helps support the emotional development of children and young people. It is designed to help staff plan and deliver individual and small group interventions for children with social, emotional, and behavioural needs.
ELSAs are Teaching assistants who have received specific training from Educational Psychologists Their role is to support children to understand and regulate their own emotions, whilst respecting the feelings of others around them
Most ELSA sessions last 6-12 weeks, helping the child to learn specific new skills or coping strategies. Clear programme aims need to be set early on and each session has an objective. They then plan activities to help the child meet those objectives. They help children develop skills like:
Awareness of their own and other people's emotions
Managing stress, grief, anger, and conflict
Developing social interaction skills
Promoting a realistic self-concept and selfesteem
ELSAs attend training days and group supervision sessions led by Educational Psychologists They work to plan interventions. They also attend the ELSA Trust Network Learning Community led by Mrs Webb, Senior Mental Health Lead and Senior Behaviour Teaching Assistant, once a term so that training, guidance and support can be facilitated which supports best practice as well as collaboration and belonging for the ELSA’s across the Trust.
ELSAs employ a multifaceted approach to support children with emotional and social needs. They create a safe and nurturing environment that fosters trust and open communication. By building strong relationships with each child, ELSA’s establish a foundation for effective support. They then engage children in interactive activities and discussions designed to enhance their emotional and social skills. These activities may involve role-playing, storytelling, art therapy, and mindfulness practices
The ELSA programme offers numerous benefits for children It equips them with strategies to regulate their emotions effectively, develop positive relationships with other children and adults, and navigate challenging situations with greater resilience. Furthermore, children participating in the ELSA programme often experience increased selfesteem, reduced anxiety and depression, and improved academic performance
The ELSA programme represents a collaborative effort between schools, families, and the community to ensure that all children receive the necessary support to thrive emotionally and socially By addressing emotional and social needs proactively, ELSAs help nurture well-rounded individuals who are better equipped to navigate the complexities of childhood and beyond.
Building Stronger Foundations Project (Sutton) and SAATIS (Surrey Virtual School - Attachment Aware and Trauma Informed Schools) Programme
Our schools in Sutton are among 23 schools in the borough taking part in the BSF programme, joined by our schools in Surrey participating in the SAATIS programme
These projects aim to support schools to further build on our current practice and ensure we continue to sustain and embed our whole-school relational approach based on trauma-informed and attachmentaware practice This is aimed to support all children, and especially those who are trauma-experienced
As part of this project, Mrs Webb, alongside Emily Crosby, an Educational Psychologist for Sutton, delivered bespoke training covering ‘understanding trauma and developing relational approaches’ This included ELSA’s donning their ‘trauma glasses’ to look at a range of behaviours in relation to looking beyond the surface as to the causes, emotions and feelings that lie at the root of these behaviours The ELSA’s then went on to explore a range of responses that could be used to support all children, and in particular those who may have experienced trauma, through the PACE approach (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, Empathy) in order to pre-empt dysregulation and escalation in children’s behaviour and to support children successfully, through this relational approach.
ELSA’s at LEO Academy Trust do a fabulous job and are committed to what they do! It was lovely to have them all in the same room so they could discuss, explore, collaborate and learn from each other as well as continue their own professional development to benefit the children in the Trust Emily Crosby was incredibly impressed!
We aim for the following as we know that when these are in place the ELSA’s in our LEO schools can have the greatest impact
Other staff knowing about and ing the ELSA work
ELSA staff are given relevant background information on the child and family
The ELSA liaises with Class teacher and SENCO to see if skills are being transferred
The ELSA has regular time for planning and delivering the programme
The ELSA attends supervision to acquire new skills
The ELSA is not taken away often to complete other duties
Children are released from lessons to enable continuity of support
The ELSA role is not confused with behaviour management
We're dedicated to providing an inclusive and ambitious education for all children, and are actively working towards achieving ARC accreditation through these projects.
This reflects our ongoing passion and commitment to identifying and removing barriers to learning, ensuring that all LEO children have the best possible chance to succeed and create a brighter future for themselves, whatever they may choose that to be
