LEO Academy Trust Annual Impact Report 2024

Welcome from Our Pupils

At LEO Academy Trust, our pupils are at the heart of everything that we do We strive to provide all children with all the opportunities and resources they need to succeed in life, and we are so proud of all the hard work they have put in this year. Take a look at some of their highlights from 2024!

“I really like art lessons When we were learning about the seasons and different types of weather, I enjoyed drawing a rainbow for a weather mobile which we made and then displayed in the classroom. I also enjoyed making poppies for Remembrance Day where we thought about those people who died during the war. ”

Morgan, Year 1 Brookfield Primary Academy

“I enjoy all of my learning at school but have particularly enjoyed DT this term We learnt about mechanisms and used a lever to make the mouth of a crocodile move up and down History is also fun This year we have been learning about nurses in the past and why they were significant We used thinglink on our chrome books to research them, wrote notes on our plan and then used this information to write like historians, remembering to write facts and not fiction ”

Meliha, Year 2 Cheam Common Infants Academy

“There are so many opportunities at Cheam Common both in school, out of school and across LEO. A particular highlight of my time at Cheam Common so far was our Devon residential in Year 5 I was definitely out of my comfort zone during the water obstacle course and I really learned to persevere My favourite subject is Maths, as I love challenging myself I particularly like using Polypad to help visualise my ideas I am really looking forward to being part of the Turing Scheme trip next year I know I am so lucky and am enjoying making new friends already ”

Kamsi, Year 6 Cheam Common Junior Academy

"One of my favorite subjects this year has been Art because we designed and made our own chairs Another subject I have enjoyed is science as we have been learning about how plants adapt. Our Year 6 trip to Sutton Library to attend the Junior Citizenship Scheme was very valuable as it taught me some important life skills I also really enjoy PE."

Eva, Year 6 Cheam Fields Primary Academy

“The people that inspire me the most are the PE teachers They inspire me to always stay positive. They help students like me to always take part in everything we do. I used to not be confident at rugby but each and every one of the PE teachers have helped me to achieve all of my goals. This taught me never to give up and is the most unforgettable memory from this year. ”

Magathy, Year 5 Cheam Park Farm Primary Academy

"History has quickly become one of my favourite subjects at school. Last year ' s visit to Hampton Court Palace was a real highlight for me and I enjoyed learning all about then the reign of Henry VIII. I am also very interested in local history and enjoyed researching the Molesey flood of 1968 and how this affected our local area "

Sam, Year 4 Hurst Park Primary Academy

"At Manor Park, I love how all pupils are made to feel valued and supported by the teachers. They encourage me to strive for excellence and create a positive learning environment where everyone follows our Golden Rules The teachers are always kind and helpful, and they make sure we have the resources we need, like our Chromebooks, to succeed in every lesson."

Omar, Year 6 Manor Park Primary Academy

“I really like all my learning. My favourite subject is maths. I especially like problem-solving questions because they are enjoyable and they make me think hard which makes me smarter. I also use my Chromebook for maths work where I can challenge myself by answering questions with a timer ”

Amy, Year 2 Shawley Community Primary Academy

“In Year 2 I liked doing Art The best lesson was when we were making musical instruments out of shapes My favourite part of Year 2 was when we visited Arundel Castle. There were so many things to learn about and I liked it when we dressed up. I enjoyed doing forest school, especially when we made popcorn I also liked it when we did the Christmas play. I had a lot of words to learn!

Pupil Outcomes

Our aim, that all children should have access to an ambitious curriculum which develops them for the challenges of life, is underpinned by our LEO Pupil Outcomes These outcomes extend the curriculum offered at every LEO school and ensure we provide a rich, broad curriculum that prepares children for their future. This includes making sure all pupils have the fundamental skills to access the technology of the future.

LEO Explorers

At LEO Academy Trust, we look to develop the whole child, preparing them for the next stage of their learning We aim to develop well-rounded pupils who develop critical thinking, leadership skills, life skills and cultural capital. This is supported through our LEO Explorer Characteristics which underpin our curriculum, empowering all pupils to embrace our LEO Pupil Outcomes

LEO Explorers is an approach and not a curriculum. The priority is for pupils to understand the subject disciplines, as part of a knowledge-rich curriculum, as opposed to a set of generalised skills Therefore, these skills are used to facilitate deep substantive and disciplinary knowledge, and work alongside a progressive and inclusive curriculum Our learner profile entails the kinds of attributes and dispositions needed for all subjects. We start from the premise that key skills are grown based on knowledge, and within curriculum subjects, ensuring our pupils are prepared for both now and the future

Creating a positive and inclusive classroom environment is fundamental to the development of our LEO Explorer Characteristics. We believe that by nurturing these attributes and attitudes for learning, we equip our pupils to be confident, compassionate, and capable leaders who positively impact their communities and help shape a better tomorrow

PedTech at LEO Academy Trust

Across LEO Academy Trust, we have spent a lot of time thinking about how we can really show the impact of digital technology on learning This question has been debated by schools, suppliers, policymakers, and researchers for years, but despite extensive discussion, the sector still struggles to articulate its exact impact

Since 2019, we have rolled out our Chromebook programme, which revolutionises the way teachers teach and children learn Our pioneering and pathfinding approach to embedding digital technology has earned LEO Academy Trust huge recognition within the sector.

We commissioned Dr. Fiona Aubrey Smith to conduct a year-long, in-depth research project on the use of technology across all schools in LEO Academy Trust. Her report, ‘Changing Learning. Changing Lives What happens when EdTech becomes PedTech?’, presents the findings on technology's role in raising standards and transforming practice.

This report delves into the ingredients that LEO has put in place, drawing upon a combination of 4,500 survey responses, 606 documents, 154 observations, 65 interviews, 24 focus groups, and hundreds of hours of professional discussion and reflection.

The resulting report presents a comprehensive analysis as a narrative, a series of findings (about successes as well as how challenges have been overcome), and a set of recommendations for the future - for the benefit of both the LEO community and the wider educational landscape This is the first fully independent research to probe into every aspect of trust provision to surface the impact of digital technology globally

The LEO Boot Bank, a collaboration with James Jar of Gifts, exemplifies LEO Academy Trust’s commitment to sustainability and community support. By offering free or exchangeable football boots to children, this initiative not only promotes environmental responsibility through reuse but also provides practical, tangible assistance to families, reinforcing the Trust’s dedication to making a positive impact beyond the classroom.

The Trust also embraced technology and sustainability, with staff attending sessions like the Educational Nature Park Webinar and pupils attending Lyfta Live Lessons, which tackled AI, disability, and protected characteristics, fostering critical thinking and empathy. Workshops on Adobe Express and the New Scientist Expo ensured both staff and students remain at the forefront of learning and development. Events like the ACS STEAM programme and coding activities for World Space Week further emphasised innovation and cross-curricular learning. To enhance extracurricular engagement, LEO schools participated in the ACS Year 3 Pen Pal Project and the Amazing People Live Assembly, where students learned about mental health from a Premier League footballer. These shared opportunities exemplify LEO Academy Trust’s dedication to providing vibrant, holistic education that prepares students for the future while celebrating the richness of the present
