Conquer the

Conquer the Corrugations was invented out of need. A need to find a way to deal with the grief of suicide. Emma Jackson is an English migrant and the wife of a Far North Queensland pastoralist who faced this grief after the tragic loss of her nephew to suicide. She wanted to raise awareness in the community to the horror of suicide and set about putting a plan in place. The idea of bringing people together to talk openly about their feelings was born in 2015 and what better way than to walk and talk.

Winchelsea local Robert “Charlie” Earl, met Emma while on holiday on Cape York and the concept of the walk struck him hard. He stopped to review his own experience, which in reality he had hidden away in the back of his mind. Upon reflection, he realised that eight people close to him had taken their own lives over his lifetime. He floated the idea of bringing the walk to his own backyard. Emma was full of support.

As a board member of the Winchelsea Bendigo Community Bank, he sought their financial assistance to bring his dream to life and they responded with a $5000 grant.

The plan to bring locals together was born and the walk from Winchelsea to Inverleigh and return took place last weekend. The efforts of individuals and support groups like the Lions Clubs of Inverleigh and Winchelsea and Geraldine and Georgie Malady at the Inverleigh Hotel was greatly appreciated by the 150 who people registered to be involved.

The walk also took on additional connection, as the Royal Flying Doctor Service was a massive supporter of the project in Queensland and other regional areas where the walk has been taken place. A recent addition of this publication highlighted the connection of Inverleigh’s own Clifford Peel playing a significant role in the creation of the RFDS. Jos Middleton from the RFDS joined Emma in making the trek south to be involved in the walk and also hosed a trivia style mental health awareness session at the Inverleigh Hotel on Saturday night.

The walk was a huge success and many spoke of their own connection to the reality of suicide providing the drive to participate.

If anyone reading this is troubled by subject, please call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue on 1300 224 636. Rob Cameron.

The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them.

Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001. Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including fencing and tree planting.

Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire.

The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street, clearly visable from the General Store across the road.

The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee.

Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history.

Peter’s Editorial

It has been a busy month for this edition of the Leigh News. On Saturday I got to meet lot's of enthusiastic people who had WALKED from Winchelsea to Inverleigh for the Conquer the Corrugations event on Saturday and many were planning to camp for the night and then WALK back to Winchelsea. Read the report on Pages 2 & 3.

As you can see on the front cover, the Inverleigh Zine Fair is happening on Saturday the 3rd of June. I must confess I had not heard of "Zine's" before Bec Wilson introduced me to them, but they are enticing little Origami type folded booklets, just ideal for young and old. Come along to the Fair and enjoy the experience. Till next month, Stay Safe and Stay Warm......PeterT.

Wedding Photos

Wedding photos are the most kept image found among family mementos, a precious keepsake from the past, from the time when snapping an image or creating an album was not an daily activity. These two images are from the Weddings folder held by the Inverleigh Historical Society which covers local marriages from 1920 onwards. It is interesting to compare the decades showing fashion changes and styles from the seated groom with the bride behind, to multi coloured bridesmaids and big hairstyles. The marriage of Allan McDonald and Mary Nicholson took place in 1928 with attendants Maggie Nicholson and “Jack” McDonald. Allan, also known as “Scottie” was the son of Lachlan McDonald and Isabella nee Warrington. McDonald’s were the town butchers and the Warrington’s owned the Inverleigh Hotel. Mary’s family had an orchard along Common Road and her aunt had married the local Postmaster. Allan is carefully holding his gloves and the shine on the mens shoes is impressive. Allan and Mary moved to Winchelsea where Allan worked as a stock and station agent.

Around this time, it was usual for the ‘Inverleigh Correspondent’ newshound to give a gloriously detailed description of weddings and funerals, but there is no mention of these nuptials in the Geelong Advertiser. A year previously his sister Bertha McDonald’s wedding report ran to three columns describing dresses, floral decorations and the seven speeches and toasts with replies.

The second wedding photo is of Valentine Dawber and Marion Robertson who married in 1943. The Dawber family worked on ‘Barunah Plains’ and Val attended Hesse school where Marion was also a pupil. This was a quickly organised wedding

as Val had received call-up papers for war service. Marion wore a borrowed wedding dress, and they were married at the Presbyterian Church, Inverleigh. Borrowing a dress was common during wartime. Upon returning home, Val was back on ‘Barunah Plains’ as a rabbiter where they lived in a small cottage on Nine Mile paddock. With the advent of the Soldier Settler estates at Wingeel and Barunah, a school bus run was established. and Val took on the job of bus driver and the family moved to Inverleigh. Students from those days are still telling stories of their antics on “Mr. Dawber’s bus” including being put off at the Police Station and given a walk/run to school for misbehaving.

These were times when social activities were mostly local including church, sport, dances and get togethers resulting in marriages within the neighbourhood, not the wider connections provided in later years.

If you have a wedding image you would like to be included in the folder, please contact the Inverleigh Historical Society. inverleighhistsoc@gmail.com

Golden Pens - Write side up

G’Day from the penners for June. With the winter solstice coming up, now is the time to curl up with a good read in front of a cosy fire.

This month’s poem is from Gordon, not known for his love of poetry we have had to squeeze this one out of him. It took a lot. But nevertheless, we think he has done a good job and it is self-explanatory, so we hope you enjoy it.

We can be contacted via our email goldenpens4@gmail.com so if you, like us, think this is a beauty please let him and us know.

Cheers, Wendy

A Reflection on Poetry

To write some verse I’ve been asked to attempt, A task I would normally treat with contempt, Five verses long, a daunting task, So dear friend, why did you ask?

Rhyme and rhythm what a bore, To write with style I quite abhor, But here I go against my will, Crafting words I know won’t thrill.

Lines may stumble, metre may fail, I struggle to follow a poetic trail, My words, they lack that lyrical grace, Of Keats and Shelley there is no trace.

Oh poetry, you elude my grasp, Why must I labour at this thankless task? With every verse, I grow more sad, My skill at rhyme is so very bad.

Thanks to:

Ross & Caroline Wilson of Shelford and Mora Leach of Inverleigh for faithfully supplying the monthly rainfall figures. Your efforts are very much appreciated.

But despite my angst, I forge ahead, My headache I can treat with rest in bed, Verse, I fear, I must leave to the rest, For I am a writer who fails the poetry test.

POLICE REPORT FOR JUNE 2023

Hello all, I have been noticing and been made aware of burnouts being done along the Hamilton Hwy between Geelong and Cressy including a lot of activity around Pollocksford Road Stonehaven. To address burnout activity, as well as police patrols we also need the community to provide us information on times incidents occur, vehicles and possible registrations observed. Any information can be passed onto us through a call to the closest police station or a call to crime stoppers Ph 1800 333 000 or make an online report through their website. We also rely on parents/associates who may know people involved to actively discourage this type of behaviour.

I have had reports of a Black Holden Commodore loitering about the Common Road/Bakers Lane Inverleigh area where it was observed entering a private rural property. I also had a report of a theft from a shed on a rural property Eastern side of Inverleigh. Please report any suspicious loitering/vehicles to Police on 000. Consider closing/looking gates to discourage/prevent access into your rural properties.

I recently detected three excessive speeding vehicles: 4/5/23 9.35 pm Hamilton Hwy Inverleigh Toyota utility East bound vicinity Ellingerrin Road 34 yr old male

Past and present servicemen and servicewomen are invited to participate in the march by forming up at the reserve at 10:30am. After the march, a service will follow with prayers, hymns, guest speaker and laying of wreaths. Afterwards, light refreshments will be served in the Waurn Ponds Hall, an opportunity for past pupils of the Waurn Ponds State School and past residents to catch up. I attended the Inverleigh food swap and Inverleigh Primary school bake sale recently and it was good to see lots of community members at the events, well done to the organisers.

The Inverleigh Progress Association requires a volunteer with bookkeeping experience to help with their financial reporting. It is not an arduous role but is essential for the smooth running of the organisation. Our treasurer has moved away from the district and is no longer involved in our community.

If you feel you have the skills and can spare a couple of hours a month to help you would be most welcome.

The association continues to work with the community and Golden Plains Shire for the improvement of the township and its surrounds.

Many new people have moved to this area recently and surely someone will have the skills we need and want to be part of future planning in their new community. Please contact the Association via:

Winter Is Coming

As many of you have noticed the days are cooler and the nights often have a chill in the air.

So this then raises the issue of heating the home for a comfortable existence during these colder months. As many of you would by now realise electricity has become a lot more expensive, as has gas. These price trends are unlikely to change in the short to medium term as the supply chains in both products have issues and are likely to become unreliable and unaffordable as the demand for them grows, especially electricity.

The Wood heater or open fire has now become an alternative for a lot of homes to help with their heating. While wood can be expensive a lot of people have access to certain amounts of wood around their properties and this helps keep them tidy and reduce the amount of burnable materials on the property. It can also be a good activity for the family to go wood collecting, if you put effort into gathering wood then it sometimes is more valued and used more carefully. Anyway some points about wood that you should be aware of.

*Always use dry seasoned wood, wet wood

does not burn very well and blocks up the chimney with soot a lot quicker, also creates a lot of smoke. Never use treated pine in a inside situation. Hardwood will give the best heat in most situations.

*Always be careful when cleaning out ash as while it looks cold often it will have hot bits within it and it can burn you. Always put it into a metal bucket to take outside, plastic ones have melted and caused damage.

*Make sure the wood heaters have good door seals and clean chimneys and are not rusted out. Open fires are much simpler but riskier and make sure the hearth area in front of the fire is clear and that you have a fire screen that can be placed in front of the fire place when it is not attended.

*Please make sure your smoke alarms are working and located in an area that is not to close to your fire as some escaping smoke might set it going, but in an area that will give you plenty of warning if you do have a fire in the home. Near the bedrooms is a good place.

Stay warm , Ewen Peel.

I haven’t seen one for at least 20 years. In the 80s and 90s it was not unusual to see a koala in the reserve occasionally. Manna gums and river red gums proliferate in the Reserve, and both are among the koala’s favourite eucalyptus species.

Phone: 0407 850 041

The most common reasons for koala population decline are habitat loss, fire, predation by feral animals and the disease chlamydia. In the case of the Inverleigh koalas, the prime suspect is the Millennium drought (1997–2009). In her PhD research, Dr. Valentina Mella found that, during a long drought, eucalyptus leaves become drier, resulting in the koalas leaving their trees to search for water. During the drought all the ponds and creeks within the Inverleigh Reserve were dry for most of the time. Please contact us if you have other information or opinions on this question.

A charity called Koala Clancy Foundation has plans to vegetate a large area of farmland immediately adjacent to the Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve, for the purpose of establishing more koala habitat. Some facts: Koala joeys are born only 2 cm long. Gum leaves are toxic to most mammals. Koala joeys eat some of their mother’s droppings to obtain the micro-organisms they need to digest gum leaves. Koalas do not live in Tasmania, W.A. or the N.T. Koalas are not bears.

RITUALS TO MAINTAIN IN YOUR SIGNIFCANT RELATIONSHIP

I write a lot about our relationships in our community and community organisations, but I wonder if we have ever stopped to consider that our immediate family is a community. And whether the relationship we have with our life partner, our significant other, as a community of two. I think this is what is meant, in part, in the consent of the Anglican wedding service asking, will you be faithful ‘forsaking all others so long as you both shall live?’ Many miss the point when two people live together it is bringing together two family community cultures. All relational partnerships are multicultural communities and this can create conflicts and tensions within the relationship.

Although it might seem small and inconsequential, rituals can have an overwhelmingly positive effect on our relationship with our significant other. Rituals create and nurture connection, shared meaning, and a sense of stability in our bonding. They act as constant relational touch points that help us stay tethered to each other and our unique identity as a couple – in the midst of our busy lives.

The goodbye/reunion ritual

The goodbye kiss, or the “I love you’s” as we see each other off in the morning. A kiss or a decent hug when we return home sets off some feel-good endorphins and re-establishes that bond as we reunite, starting our evening off on the right foot.

The celebration ritual

The Revd Dr Timothy Smith

Don’t forget birthdays and anniversaries, but also life milestones, job promotions, recalling a happy memory, recognising a family tradition, or resolving a problem. Make a special meal or treat, eat at a favourite restaurant, or put on that song that kicks off a kitchen dance party – there’s no right or wrong.

The holiday ritual

We grow up with different family traditions and ways of celebrating time together. Sure, we might adopt some of the traditions of one or both of our families, but don’t be afraid to try new things or add our own unique spin to them. Plan a holiday together; holidays have potential to create our own identity as a couple. If our family includes children include them this also establishes a sense of family identity.

The daily ritual

These might be mistaken for the mundane parts of marriage, but they can actually be the glue that connects the ups and downs of life as a couple. Rituals such as making tea for our partner in bed in the morning, settling into the couch for a few quiet minutes of cuddling after the kids are in bed, brushing your teeth together every night before crawling into bed for pillow talk. While they don’t seem exciting, they are comforting moments that you can count on.

The dating ritual

How often do we talk about incorporating a weekly date or date night without the kids? It could simply be a picnic, going for a walk on the beach, or going out to a restaurant for dinner. Continuing to date each other throughout your relationship is important and can help make that time spent together feel special.

The silly ritual

This is my favourite ritual of some light-hearted actions or language we might share in our partnership no one else knows. Things like nicknames, an over-the-top secret handshake when our favourite sports team gets a win, a nonsensical phrase from an inside joke years ago that means “I love you.” These silly rituals started without intention, but the bond and “we”-ness they cultivate is priceless and come out of friendship, knowing each other well, and we can’t fake them.

Relationship rituals highlight the uniqueness of our relationship, strengthen our bond, and show affection with our significant other. There are probably things we do and say which we don’t even think of as rituals; make sure you keep them up to benefit your relationship?

Snail Bait Poisoning

Snail bait poisoning can be fatal if not treated quickly. If you suspect that your pet has eaten snail bait you must get veterinary treatment immediately. A very small amount of snail bait is fatal for dogs. Approximately 1 teaspoon per 4.5kg bodyweight will cause death in 5O% of ingestions.

Death will occur within 2-4 hours of ingestion if left untreated. Snail bait comes in several different forms. Tasty ingredients such as sugar syrups, soybeans or rice are mixed into baits along with the poison which make the baits tempting to both snails and pets. Dogs seem to be more prone as they are scavengers and like to eat things they shouldn’t. Cats can be a little choosier when it comes to what they eat but are still at risk.

There are three types of snail bait:

1. Metaldehyde- green pellets

2. Methiocarb- blue pellets

3. Multiguard- brown/yellow pellets

The main signs of snail bait poisoning include:

Excessive drooling

Muscle tremors, twitching

Rapid heart rate, panting Vomiting and diarrhoea

Seizures

The sooner your pet receives veterinary treatment, the better the outcome is likely to be. Bring the packaging with you if you can so your vet knows exactly what has been ingested.

Treatment:

There is no direct antidote for snail bait toxicity; treatment is aimed at controlling the clinical signs. In the majority of cases the animal presents with tremors and seizures and will require a general anaesthetic to help control the seizures and to allow our vets to perform gastric lavage (this is where a feeding tube is inserted into the stomach via the mouth and using warm water to flush the pellets out through the mouth) and an enema (involving flushing the bowel contents out)

Supportive care in the form of intravenous fluids may be required as well as medications to help reduce muscle tremors and seizures.

Prevention is the key.

If you own dogs or cats our advice is that you do not use snail baits of any description on your property.

ORAVET

The team at Bannockburn Vet Clinic have regular training sessions so we can keep up to date with the best products for your pets.

In this newsletter we would like to share with you important information on dental disease.

32 Leigh News

*Periodontal disease is the number one health problem in small animal patients.

*By 2 years of age 80% of dogs have periodontal disease.

*Toy and small breeds are particularly susceptible Initiated by oral bacteria which adhere to the teeth in a substance called plaque. Stages of disease:

1. Gingivitis

*Initial stage and reversable

*Inflammation of gums, red, bleeding and sore.

2. Periodontitis

*Later stage and irreversible

*Inflammation of the deeper supporting structures of the tooth

We must learn to view periodontal disease as not merely a dental problem that causes bad breath and tooth loss, but as an initiator of more severe systemic consequences.

Homecare is a critical aspect of periodontal care.

A relatively new dental chew for dogs Oravet Dental Hygiene chews contains delmopinol, which dissolves in saliva and is spread throughout the mouth as the dog chews. Delmopinol disrupts the salivary pellicle, the precursor of plaque, by forming a barrier that prevents bacterial attachment.
