Golden Pens - Write side up

G’Day from the penners for June. With the winter solstice coming up, now is the time to curl up with a good read in front of a cosy fire.

This month’s poem is from Gordon, not known for his love of poetry we have had to squeeze this one out of him. It took a lot. But nevertheless, we think he has done a good job and it is self-explanatory, so we hope you enjoy it.

A Reflection on Poetry

To write some verse I’ve been asked to attempt, A task I would normally treat with contempt, Five verses long, a daunting task, So dear friend, why did you ask?

Rhyme and rhythm what a bore, To write with style I quite abhor, But here I go against my will, Crafting words I know won’t thrill.

Lines may stumble, metre may fail, I struggle to follow a poetic trail, My words, they lack that lyrical grace, Of Keats and Shelley there is no trace.

Oh poetry, you elude my grasp, Why must I labour at this thankless task? With every verse, I grow more sad, My skill at rhyme is so very bad.

Thanks to:

Ross & Caroline Wilson of Shelford and Mora Leach of Inverleigh for faithfully supplying the monthly rainfall figures. Your efforts are very much appreciated.

But despite my angst, I forge ahead, My headache I can treat with rest in bed, Verse, I fear, I must leave to the rest, For I am a writer who fails the poetry test.
