POLICE REPORT FOR JUNE 2023

Hello all, I have been noticing and been made aware of burnouts being done along the Hamilton Hwy between Geelong and Cressy including a lot of activity around Pollocksford Road Stonehaven. To address burnout activity, as well as police patrols we also need the community to provide us information on times incidents occur, vehicles and possible registrations observed. Any information can be passed onto us through a call to the closest police station or a call to crime stoppers Ph 1800 333 000 or make an online report through their website. We also rely on parents/associates who may know people involved to actively discourage this type of behaviour.

I have had reports of a Black Holden Commodore loitering about the Common Road/Bakers Lane Inverleigh area where it was observed entering a private rural property. I also had a report of a theft from a shed on a rural property Eastern side of Inverleigh. Please report any suspicious loitering/vehicles to Police on 000. Consider closing/looking gates to discourage/prevent access into your rural properties.

Waurn Ponds Remembers Past Servicemen And Servicewomen

The Waurn Ponds Memorial Reserve Committee of Management will be hosting a memorial service on Sunday 2nd of July 2023, to mark the 104th Anniversary of the Waurn Ponds Avenue of Honour. The trees in the reserve were planted in 1919 as a tribute to the Waurn Ponds and District servicemen who served in World War One. The Reserve now stands as a memorial to all servicemen and servicewomen who have served in the defence forces. The memorial service will commence with a short march. Past and present servicemen and servicewomen are invited to participate in the march by forming up at the reserve at 10:30am. After the march, a service will follow with prayers, hymns, guest speaker and laying of wreaths. Afterwards, light refreshments will be served in the Waurn Ponds Hall, an opportunity for past pupils of the Waurn Ponds State School and past residents to catch up. Memorabilia, service records and photographs are more than welcomed to be displayed in the Waurn Ponds Hall.

I have been discovering a few locals with unregistered vehicles while patrolling the school crossings. Most drivers claimed they were unaware their vehicles were unregistered. Please check your vehicles registration. You can check on the Vic Roads web site. The unregistered vehicle fine is $925.

I attended the Inverleigh food swap and Inverleigh Primary school bake sale recently and it was good to see lots of community members at the events, well done to the organisers.

Keep safe Chris

The Inverleigh Progress Association requires a volunteer with bookkeeping experience to help with their financial reporting. It is not an arduous role but is essential for the smooth running of the organisation. Our treasurer has moved away from the district and is no longer involved in our community.

If you feel you have the skills and can spare a couple of hours a month to help you would be most welcome.

The association continues to work with the community and Golden Plains Shire for the improvement of the township and its surrounds.

Many new people have moved to this area recently and surely someone will have the skills we need and want to be part of future planning in their new community. Please contact the Association via:

Winter Is Coming

As many of you have noticed the days are cooler and the nights often have a chill in the air.

So this then raises the issue of heating the home for a comfortable existence during these colder months. As many of you would by now realise electricity has become a lot more expensive, as has gas. These price trends are unlikely to change in the short to medium term as the supply chains in both products have issues and are likely to become unreliable and unaffordable as the demand for them grows, especially electricity.

The Wood heater or open fire has now become an alternative for a lot of homes to help with their heating. While wood can be expensive a lot of people have access to certain amounts of wood around their properties and this helps keep them tidy and reduce the amount of burnable materials on the property. It can also be a good activity for the family to go wood collecting, if you put effort into gathering wood then it sometimes is more valued and used more carefully. Anyway some points about wood that you should be aware of.

*Always use dry seasoned wood, wet wood does not burn very well and blocks up the chimney with soot a lot quicker, also creates a lot of smoke. Never use treated pine in a inside situation. Hardwood will give the best heat in most situations.

*Always be careful when cleaning out ash as while it looks cold often it will have hot bits within it and it can burn you. Always put it into a metal bucket to take outside, plastic ones have melted and caused damage.

*Make sure the wood heaters have good door seals and clean chimneys and are not rusted out. Open fires are much simpler but riskier and make sure the hearth area in front of the fire is clear and that you have a fire screen that can be placed in front of the fire place when it is not attended.

*Please make sure your smoke alarms are working and located in an area that is not to close to your fire as some escaping smoke might set it going, but in an area that will give you plenty of warning if you do have a fire in the home. Near the bedrooms is a good place.

Stay warm , Ewen Peel.
