INVERLEIGH AND DISTRICT GOOD FRIDAY APPEAL FAMILY FUN DAY 2025

On Friday the 18th of April the community of Inverleigh once again put on a fantastic Family Fun Day raising much needed funds for the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

Around 3500 people attended, raising $32,185.56.

I personally would like to thank the other 5 members of this very small committee that put on the day. They are an extremely hard working group of very passionate people that give up their time for this event. They should be very proud of what they continue to achieve year after year.

We would like to thank our major sponsors, Stockdale and Leggo Bannockburn, Bendigo Bank Winchelsea & District, Golden Plains Times and Hewitt & Whitty Inverleigh & Winchelsea.

We would also like to thank our community groups and clubs that helped us on the day.

The Leigh Valley Lions club, the Inverleigh CWA, the Bannockburn & District Men's Shed, Bannockburn SES and Inverleigh CFA.

We would also like to thank the 100's of businesses, groups and individuals that donated goods and services. This includes everything from auction items, cash donations, free coolroom hire, meat for the BBQ, eggs for the egg hunt, discounts on ride hire and so on. I couldn't possibly mention every donation however each and everyone makes a big difference to the overall result.

We must also thank and acknowledge the 1000's of people who attended on the day.

We are always looking for new committee members and assistance in a variety of ways. If you would like to help or have some great ideas for 2026 we would love to hear from you.

Regards Jay Cook 0409 234 652 President IDGFA Committee Inc.

FEDERAL MEMBER FOR WANNON

You will have noticed in previous editions that the Inverleigh Progress Association has been seeking a replacement Editor for this monthly magazine.

The Leigh News has been prepared for the local community since 1977 and during that time there have been quite a number of Editor's, some who have passed on, others who have held the position for 10 years or more.

The magazine has developed over this time from an initial 6 page black & white paper, printed on a gestetner printing machine, to a full electronic program to layout each months work and emailed to a Uni in Ballarat for printing.

I am currently preparing each edition using 'Indesign' by Adobe. There are other software packages available, such as Canva which could also be used.

I will not be able to continue past the end of the year due to medical issues, so now is the time for a replacement to come forward.

If you are studying graphic design at Uni or The Gordon, this is a great opportunity to contribute to our local community while gaining more experience for your studies moving forward. The previous Editor was a commercial Pilot and he did his preparation while travelling the globe. Personally, I had no previous experience in preparing a magazine (I was a draftsman), but somehow I was able to teach myself how do it and was 2 weeks late with the first edition I prepared. I love doing the Leigh News and so will you if you get involved. I look forward to hearing from those in the community that would like to know more.

Give me a ring or an email, in confidence, and we'll have a chat.

kind regards, PeterT (Peter Trevaskis) 0407 100 791 leighnews@bigpond.com

Your vote matters this election

Who we choose to represent us in Canberra could come down to 500 votes

The federal electorate of Wannon has been a safe seat for 70 years, meaning that South-West Victoria has been taken for granted and overlooked by both major parties for decades. We have a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunity to change this on 3 May 2025.

Make your vote count.

SOMETHING NEW

GENUINE COMMUNITY INDEPENDENT REPRESENTATION

G’day, I’m Alex.

Last year, I was asked by community independent movement Voices of Wannon to run as their candidate.

Alex D yson

I’m now proud to be part of a broad grassroots movement with people from all walks of life and political backgrounds united by a common purpose – to put community and integrity back into politics and get a better deal for Wannon.

Crumbling roads, childcare deserts and housing shortages don’t just happen overnight. We’ve been taken for granted for decades and this is our best shot to end safe seat politics in Wannon. How can we expect those responsible for our issues to solve them? If I have the honour of being your representative, my promise to you is that I will work hard every day and with all sides of politics to get Wannon a better deal.

I will:

• Push to end the neglect from the major parties on our regional roads

• Push for long-term solutions to housing, childcare and aged care

• Always vote to increase support for rural and regional Australia

• Always vote in the best interests of my communitynot a political party

• Always vote to improve transparency and accountability in politics

Genuine community backing. Endorsed by Voices of Wannon

More than 2,000 supporters, 1,000 volunteers and 1,000+ donors from across the community.

Independents get results. Since being elected to Indi (North-east Victoria) MP Helen Haines has delivered record funding to her electorate.

THE SAME

SAFE SEAT POLITICS AND PARTY LOYALTIES SINCE ELECTED IN 2010

Let’s stick to the facts. Politicians say a lot, but how they vote is what really counts. Check out the website theyvoteforyou.org.au to see how your current Member for Wannon Dan Tehan votes and represents you in federal parliament.

Here’s a snapshot:

Dan Tehan voted almost always against increasing support for rural and regional Australia

Dan Tehan voted consistently against increasing housing affordability

Dan Tehan voted consistently against increasing marine conservation

Dan Tehan voted consistently against increasing restrictions on gambling

Dan Tehan voted consistently against increasing political transparency

Dan Tehan voted consistently against increasing the age pension

Dan Tehan voted consistently against consumer protections

2025 May - Wingeel Railway Station

Part of learning local history are the stories of ‘ghost’ towns and railway stations. Such is the story of Wingeel railway station. Opened in August 1913, the Gheringhap-Maroona railway line had stations at Murgheboluc, Inverleigh, Doroq, Wingeel, Poorneet, Cressy and then another ten stations along the line towards Ararat. The Geelong Advertiser 8-8-1913 “On and after Friday August 8th two trains, a passenger and a goods will run between Maroona and Geelong and return.” The first stationmaster was Mr. L. Molloy who came from Marong.

May 2025 Calendar

This image was taken by Neville Gee on 17th of October, 1970 It is a DERM (Diesel Electric Rail Motor). It's running a Rail enthusiast's special, on the Down (away from Melbourne). The Driver, (as required after 1968), is doing the Safe-Working, ie; obtaining permission from Train Control, Geelong, removing an electric staff for the section to Cressy, and 'sinking' the staff from Inverleigh. By this time the Wingeel platform had been dismantled and only steps provided. All crossing stations were fully manned at the start, but over time staff levels/grades were reduced until the line was 'automated' (the poor man's version) in the 1960's.

Today this line is part of the interstate freight system and has been converted to a ‘standard’ line. The standard gauge railway track has a distance of 1.435 meters (4 feet 8 1/2 inches) between the inner faces of the rails. This is the most widely used railway gauge globally, accounting for approximately 60% of the world's railway tracks. In Victoria the majority of passenger rail is ‘broad’ gauge at 1.6m. The evolution of the track differences between Victoria and New South Wales is a story for another day.

Neville Gee. houses, two single workers huts, storage sheds and a siding, with stockyards. The stockyards were very busy at the time of the Wingeel sheep sales. Local legend Mel Quinlivian was one of the four gangers working at Wingeel in the time of steam trains. There was no water filling for the trains at Wingeel, but it was a changeover point for the train crews. It was a 24hr station and was supposedly the only Victorian line to run at a profit. Bruce McDonald remembers taking bags of linseed to the storage shed to freight to Meggitts. All the buildings were sold for removal. In 1919 a fire started near the Wingeel station and burnt very quickly to near Winchelsea and then with a wind change, started coming back. As a result of this fire the Wingeel fire brigade was formed. According to a Victorian Railways article in 1918 the name Wingeel meaning eagle. There was some local agitation to change the name to Hesse or Russell but the Leigh Shire requests were ignored. If you travel west on the Hamilton Highway past Wingeel, the Poorneet siding was just past the Weering turn-off and the highway deviates away from the railway line. Ghosts, both of them.

My grateful thanks to Geoff Winkler, Mel Quinlivian and Bruce McDonald for their help with this story. Liz McDonald

Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve

Echidnas : Hiding in plain sight

The Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve is home to a population of Echidna, more properly, Short-beaked Echidna, or even more properly, Tachyglossus aculeatus roughly translated as ‘a quick-tongued prickly creature’. A very good description!

Echidnas are not the most obvious creature in the Reserve – they don’t draw attention by loud calls like birds, they don’t move quickly like kangaroos and they blend in to the environment with subdued colouring. But they are there, quietly going about their business of finding ants and termites. They have strong back feet with rear facing claws to dig ant nests and then use their snout with its nose at the tip to find their food, which is then licked up. Their large back feet make characteristic diggings – they splay them as they dig, kicking the dirt out either side at a 45° angle, compared to a rabbit’s one-directional hole.

Echidnas don’t dig holes for shelter (although they may use an abandoned rabbit burrow) but sleep under piles of thick leaves or crevices in fallen trees. They raise one offspring each year, and as one of the only two mammals that lay eggs, its hatchling, or puggle, stays in the mother’s pouch until it is weaned, just as the puggle is starting to grow spines – very good timing no doubt. While the echidna is well equipped with spines it is also covered in fur but in warmer ar-

eas such as Inverleigh, the fur is not obvious. Echidnas are active both day and night but they will avoid high temperatures by sheltering during the day.

What is the best way to spot an echidna? Follow the two golden rules for any nature-watching – go slowly and go quietly. Listen for the rustling sound as echidnas trundle through the dry undergrowth and look around for their characteristic diggings. If you are lucky enough to see one walking through the bush, wait quietly and enjoy the view. If it spots you, its first response will be to move away from you and then possibly try to dig itself into the ground, spines out!

Like all native animals, echidnas are sensitive to the effects of environmental disturbance created by humans. The Friends of the Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve volunteer to improve and maintain the habitat for all its resident animals by activities such as weed control, litter management and crucially, education for the community on the importance of protecting the bush.

Keep an eye on subsequent editions of the Leigh News and our Facebook page for activities led by the Friends group. Please contact Keith Windle for further information windle. keith@gmail.com and join us for upcoming events.

The Allure

This isn’t his first gig, he knows the routine He’s organised beforehand exactly what he needs. An early night and a healthy breakfast. Hydrated. Prepared.

Shirt off, he straddles the chair, lowers his head, sighs

His nostrils flare at the familiar smells.

Bleach, disinfectant, soothing creams, sanitised benches. Hospital-like. Sterile.

Silently he scolds himself; the headphones he’s forgotten To minimise the buzzing of the handheld tatt machine. Lots of swearing, shop talk too, explicit music lyrics. Asylum-like. Animated.

Tattoo artist preps his skin, confirms the tattoo’s placement Equipment on, she starts the tracing of the stencil transfer. The pigment is inserted and she gently wipes the blood. Surgeon-like. Focused.

He talks twitchily above the din, to distract himself

As the pain kicks in he utters a cry, one that is ignored. Bile, it rises in his throat and burns as he swallows hard. Razor-like. Cringeworthy.

He braces himself for the body art’s shading, colouring

The process intense but nearing the finish. Equipment switched off, she offers him a mirror. Life-like. Perfect.

Cream applied liberally, dressing and plastic wrap in place

She walks him through the aftercare instruction sheet. He knows the drill, a minimum of two or three weeks to heal. Routine-like. Monitored.

He stands upright, tentatively at first

The new tatt area sensitive, raw and stiff. Shrugs on his shirt and buttons it up. Euphoric-like. Satisfied.

He thanks the artist, acknowledges his respect for her talent Pays the cashier, says farewell, a stiff drink his next step. Commits to coming back, at a later date, for more. Hooked. Addicted.

22 Leigh News POLICE REPORT FOR MAY

Hello all,

Many thanks to the local residents who were not happy with a driver doing burnouts in Gregory Drive and Common Road recently and filmed the behaviour and the vehicle re-entering its property giving me the evidence I need to take the offending driver to court. If people provide police with footage of offending behaviour like vehicles doing burnouts, crossing double lines etc we can investigate the offending and take appropriate action. Obviously I can’t be everywhere to witness/catch offending but with vision from cameras/dash cams etc I can follow up incidents.

Any footage can be emailed to christopher.reynolds@police.vic.gov.au

We have had some terrible motor vehicle collisions on the roads in the area recently, including a car into the metal road barrier on the Hamilton Hwy Murgheboluc, a fatality involving a motor vehicle running off the Hamilton Hwy into trees near Cressy. The fatal collision involving a school aged child in Teesdale and another recent serious injury collision on the Midland Hwy Bannockburn. These collisions are on top of the recent incident with the motor vehicle colliding with the train in Inverleigh. Some of these incidents have involved local drivers.

Around these well published incidents disappointingly I have detected numerous local drivers speeding and committing other traffic offences including failing to give way when entering the highways. Please take care on the roads and be aware that a lot of collisions do take place a short distance from drivers homes. Please also be aware that I am now qualified to test drivers for illicit drugs and anyone detected will lose their licence.

Thanks to the council for clearing out the scrub in the rest area on the side of the Hamilton Hwy Inverleigh which has really opened the area up. As many local residents would be aware the location was previously an area which seemed to attract long term homeless campers in tents and vehicles which often ended up with calls to ambulance and police for welfare checks and incidents of unsociable behaviour.

Keep safe. Chris.

Zines are often a small print run on a photocopier, although there are many professionally printed zines. It’s a form of independent press, generally consisting of artworks, poetry, fan fiction, sports, comics, political commentary. People make them to give away, swap or sell. Fire Restrictions

Welcome to May and this now means that that fire restrictions are now lifted for the last summer period. Fire restrictions in both Golden Plains Shire and Surf Coast Shire are being withdrawn on the 1st May 2025. The Fire Restriction signs around the township will also be removed. This means that you can burn things without the need for permits and some of the other basic restrictions that are in place over the summer.

This does not mean that you can be reckless with how you go about conducting a burn, and care still needs to be taken when burning with surrounding things such as buildings and other vegetation that needs to be kept. Every year we seem to get a call out to a fire that has burnt more than it should have.

So if you are going to burn some rubbish, branches or leaves then make sure it has a cleared perimeter around it and then have a hose or a tank and pump nearby in case it is needed. If it is likely to impact neighbours then it is a good idea to tell them what your up too.

Even though fire restrictions are now

over it is recommended that you register your burn and this can be done several ways, You can ring 1800 668 511 and speak with an operator where you then supply details of what your burning and your address along with a time frame of the burn. The other option is to register on line at firepermits.vic.gov.au and supply the same information as the phone call. This can avoid unnecessary fire brigade call outs.

Currently the landscape is still very dry and so containing a burn off might be harder than normal with dry material around the fire. So take the time to clear it up and even then, put it on the fire to get rid of it. Also if it is windy, then let the wind die down and light it up when it is calmer.

Just a couple of other things to remember at this time of year.

Check your smoke detectors are working and replace batteries if necessary.

The Inverleigh CFA were also happy to help out make the Good Friday fun day at Victoria Park a great success and well done to all the organisers and all who attended to make it a very successful event.

Gardening in our local area.

At a recent 'Inverleigh Progress Association' meeting discussion took place regarding Gardening in the 'unique climate and conditions' of Inverleigh and the immediate surrounding areas. The article below and others being reprinted over the next months are shared for the mutual benefit of new residents to the area and others who may have had moderate success or even failure with their gardening adventures.

The monthly Food Swaps held on the second saturday of each month at Sonny Cafe are also a time of sharing, not only of excess food and plants, but also hints and experiences from local gardeners.

I trust this article and others to be reprinted in the future, will be of great help to all residents of the area.

If you have a specific question related to all things gardening, please consider reaching out on our facebook page "leighnews-inverleigh". There is sure to be someone local who has the information you need they can contact you to share their knowledge.

Happy gardening to you all. Peter Trevaskis Leigh News Editor.

Learning about Gardening

How did you learn about gardening? This is a question that I am often asked and I always say that I am still learning about gardening. My job gives me plenty of opportunities on a daily basis, observing and propagating plants, researching, and talking to our customers. This week a customer was able to give me the names for some unknown plants, another told me how tall her plant from our nursery had grown over a few months and another related his experience of overwintering capsicums.

This is for capsicums in pots – once they have finished fruiting for the year, move the pots to a spot protected from frost and too much rain eg tucked in under the eaves on the east side of the house. Keep the potting mix moist, but not wet, so the roots don’t rot. The leaves and thin branches will drop off. In spring you will get new growth so, at this point, start to water them and give them a feed with a liquid fertiliser such as a seaweed

product, worm wee or compost tea. The plants will be way ahead of first season plants and, according to my customer, will produce a larger crop earlier. I would add that it would save a lot of work if the plants grew in the overwintering area from the start, remembering that they will need sunlight and water in the growing season. Learning from more experienced gardeners is very helpful, since they will have stories of what they did wrong as well as what they did right. The trick is to make sure the information is valid for your area and plans. I visited an open garden and was inspired by a hillside of glowing geraniums. ‘Easy care and glorious,’ said the owner. I just had to have one. Geraniums are hardy, aren’t they? They don’t need much water. So, assisted by my husband, Keith and my son, Rohan, we cleared and planted an exposed area on a rise facing east. My geraniums grew and they did flower ‘gloriously’ in the summer. Unfortunately they were all burnt off in a winter frost and few revived. Lots of work to learn that lesson! If only someone had told me.

I love gardening shows on TV and books full of pictures – lapping up practical tips and interesting ideas to spark my imagination. The internet is also a great help – just remember to check the source. I was once confused about covering a ground cover with thick straw in winter, until I realised that the British website I was on was giving advice for snow covered Yorkshire.

In 1707, the formation of Great Britain.

In 1999, the body of British mountaineer George Mallory was discovered on Mount Everest, some 75 years after he and Andrew Irvine disappeared while attempting to become the first people to summit the peak.

In 1931, the Empire State Building in New York City officially opened; for four decades it was the tallest building in the world.

In 1840, The world's first postage stamp was released in England; it was created by Sir Rowland Hill and became known as the Penny Black.

In 2000, U.S. President Bill Clinton announced that highly accurate GPS would be made available to the public.

In 1946, an attempted prison escape by six inmates at Alcatraz resulted in two days of violent fighting, which became known as the Battle of Alcatraz.

In 1903, American pediatrician Benjamin Spock— who wrote a number of influential works on child rearing, notably Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care (1946), which sold more than 50 million copies worldwide—was born.

In Inverleigh, 2025, nothing really significant happened as far as I know. Oh well! PeterT

FIV in Cats

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a lentivirus with many similarities to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

FIV is one of the most significant and serious infectious diseases of cats around the world. Australia has a high prevalence of FIV compared to other countries, possibly because many owners permit cats to live outdoors.

FIV is spread by saliva, being primarily transmitted when an FIV infected cat bites a non-infected cat. Since the virus is spread by fighting, keeping your cat indoors will prevent exposure.

There is a vaccination that offers good protection against the virus and can be incorporated in your cats health care program. FIV is a feline host-specific virus, and there is no evidence that it causes human infection.

Assess your cat's FIV infection risk:

How often does your cat go outside?

Has your cat ever been in a fight with another cat?

Do you know of stray cats in the area?

Has your cat ever had an abscess?

Signs of infection can vary and may take years to show up.

Signs may include: Fever

Loss of apetitie

Inflammation of the mouth and gums

Swollen lymph nodes

Lethargy

Discharge from eyes and/ or nose

Recurrent infection

If your cat is showing any of these signs it is important to make an appointment with one of our veterinarians. FIV is diagnosed through a thorough examination and a blood test which detects anitbodies of the virus.

Early detection of FIV is very important, not only for the health of your cat but also to prevent spreading the infection to other cats. There is no cure for FIV. The virus causes a gradually progressive decline in immune function. Treatment is aimed at preventing and treating infections and offering supportive care.

Having FIV is not an immediate death sentence as many FIV positive cats are expected to have a reasonable life expectancy.

If you would like to book in for a FIV test and/or vaccination please call the clinic on 5281 1221 to book an appointment.

These kittens were in recently for their health check, vaccination and desexing prior to going off to their new homes.

As they are the Devon Rex breed, they can get cold easily and were wearing body suits.

These not only helped them stay warm, but also deters them from licking their sutures and they look so cute!!

Arthritis and Your Pet

The older our pets get, the more likely mobility issues can occur.

Often these problems are provoked by the onset of colder weather.

The first step in managing arthritis is to schedule an appointment for a thorough clinical examination.

Various veterinary treatments are available to manage osteoarthritis in pets. Listed below are just a few we find helpful.

4Cyte Granules or Liquid are an oral joint supplement with the purpose of cartilage regeneration.

Cartrophen injections are a veterinary product that increases joint fluid production and increases blood supply to joint surfaces.

Beransa is a monthly injection that neutralises nerve growth factor (NGF) which is a key player in pain perception. It targets and blocks NGF providing substantial relief for dogs experiencing arthritis pain.

Anti-inflammatory medications can also be used to help control the pain associated with arthritis. Anti-inflammatories will not slow the progression of the disease, and should be used in combination with other treatments.

If you would like to book an appointment to discuss arthritis with one of our vets please call the clinic on 52811221

BANNOCKBURN SURGERY IS CELEBRATING 40 YEARS.

Dr Cameron Profitt

Dr John Henderson

Dr Benjamin Fry

Dr Rupali Jain

Dr Veronica Donahoe

Dr Edward Carson

Dr Rimas Liubinas

A humble beginning for Bannockburn Surgery when it first opened its doors in 1983 – small rooms located between what was the original supermarket and pharmacy.

Soon outgrowing these rooms, they moved in 1986 to 19 High Street with two consulting rooms, a small treatment room and tiny tearoom for its team members. Its current building (16 High Street) was opened in the year 2000 – a purpose-built practice complete with five consulting rooms and a sixth added in 2010.

The practice has grown from strength to strength and has a wonderfully dedicated team of Doctors, Nurses, Reception team and Practice Manager. They also have access to high-quality Allied Health services including podiatry and newly introduced acupuncture with Dr Rimas Liubinas, with plans for more services to follow.

For Bannockburn Surgery who celebrated their forty-year anniversary a few weeks ago, this was a proud milestone. The surgery welcomed back former team members: doctors, nurses, administration staff, and allied health for an evening of festivities reminiscing on the past forty-years and what the future holds for the practice.

The Directors (and Principal GPs) of Bannockburn Surgery would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to those whom have been part of their practice team, past and present. And also extends a warm thank you to patients for ongoing support in entrusting their health to the team at Bannockburn Surgery and their journey.

The surgery has a proud history and is incredibly excited for the future. Not only the future of Bannockburn Surgery, but also in continuing to support the growing community of Bannockburn and its surrounds. The surgery has grand plans and is eagerly awaiting to commence build

Bannockburn Surgery is a fully accredited medical practice that provides comprehensive GP services and have been practising within the community for 40 years.
