KNAKAL’S BAKERY

Experience Culpeper’s living history.

N

o trip downtown should be complete without visiting one of the oldest businesses in Culpeper: Knakal’s Bakery. Owned and operated by Dwayne and Beth Whitt for more than four decades, this bakery is going on 88 years strong. It has won the Culpeper Times’s Best of the Best Bakery award for many years.

On the weekends, it’s common to see people patiently queue up out the door. Why? They know these baked goods, packed in their classic white boxes, are worth the wait.

Inside the glass display cases, there are 16 different kinds of donuts and an assortment of glazed donut holes, polka rolls, cake bars, different kinds of cupcakes, cakes, cookies, spice bars, fudge nuts, three types of pecan sandies, yeast biscuits and the locally-famous apple bread.

“Everything is made here and baked fresh daily,” Beth Whitt said. “At Christmas, a few holiday cookies are brought in, but everything else is made on site.”

Only two families have run Knakal’s in 88 years: the Knakals and the Whitts. It is a living Culpeper legacy, with its offerings practically the same as when it opened in 1935. The recipes used today have been passed down from the first owners to the Whitts in 1977 to continue its tradition.

“I think this is why we have been here for so long because we have had the specialties people have liked for so long,” Whitt said.

The bakery is the same size as when it opened in 1935 and the glass display cases are arranged in their original fashion. As another nod to its roots, the original Knakal’s sign from the thirties is still on display.

The Whitts get up early before the sun rises to bake each donut, cookie and cupcake fresh.

Right now, Whitt is in her 38th year of operating the bakery. Meanwhile, Dwayne is in his 46th year and has been baking since he was 14-years-old.

“It’s the only job I’ve ever had,” Dwayne Whitt said. “I must be pretty good at it because I’ve been here a long time. Times have changed, but our products haven’t throughout the years. Nobody ever taught me. I just watched my father and learned. The hours are long. You have to be dedicated.”

“We keep everything the same so that when people come by after many years, they still remember the taste. We hear stories about kids who used to spend their lunch money here and get donut holes — a lot of good memories,” Whitt said. Locally, businesses and schools know who to call when they want sweet treats.

Knakals supplies many baked goods for corporate events, school functions and special occasions. When a coworker shows up with Knakal’s iconic blank white boxes, everyone knows where it’s from.

The bakery also gets busy during wedding season and national hol-

idays since it’s well known for its excellent custom cakes, cookies and cupcakes. If you’re ever in a rush, you can also grab a delicious blank pre-made cake.

For an added dose of nostalgia, you can also get a classic plain cup of drip coffee with creamer. Whitt keeps her coffee simple to complement downtown’s specialty coffee shop, Raven’s Nest, nodding to a spirit of a specialty business camaraderie in Culpeper.

“When people come back, they want to see if we are still here and what is still left on the street. And we’re still here. We feel fortunate to have been here for 88 years and hope to be here for many more.”

Come visit one of the oldest and most cherished businesses in town — a living history of Culpeper.

Knakal’s is located at 146 E Davis St, Culpeper, VA 22701.

GREEN ROOST

Nestled in charming downtown Culpeper, there is a boutique called Green Roost that only sells clothing, gifts and home goods that support a cause.

“Around here, we believe in gifting with purpose,” said owner Kelsey Settle, who started running the shop in 2009 when it was a substore of Pepperberries, another successful Culpeper boutique.

Her passion is to find brand partners that give back and help their own community or another small business.

If you want to give a gift that goes beyond material satisfaction, Green Roost offers much more than quality items. Every product carried in the boutique comes from an ethical vendor that helps someone. For example, ABLE, their most popular fashion line, employs women overcoming difficult situations and is fully transparent about their wages. Its custom Culpeper apparel and gifts, made by local artist Roque Castro, the one who made the depot’s “LOVE” sign, are also popular items.

Settle and her employees all know the stories behind the brands, which helps customers find meaningful gifts. Whether it is a set of pajamas designed by people with differing abilities or jewelry made by women seeking refuge, there are so many meaningful gifts in this boutique. There are also ethical baby, bath, body and food products.

“I do a lot of research,” Settle said. “I spend a lot of time looking for brands that fit my niche that other people would be interested in.”

The boutique has a front end that contains more home goods and gift items, while the back carries predominantly clothing and

accessories. The clothing side of the store carries timeless fashion that you could feel good wearing for years.

This slow fashion withstands trends and is easily wearable in a variety of situations. You can trust that the high-quality piece that you buy here will be worth the investment, promising years of style that doesn’t fall with the fleeting trends.

Over the years, Green Roost has developed a faithful following of local and online fans. People can shop the full store online to make sure to get all product drops. The boutique also has a significant following on Instagram and Facebook, where Settle announces new products and connects with her customers.

Shoppers can also subscribe to Roost Insider, a weekly newsletter that promotes the boutique’s new products and special “after-hours” events like charcuterie board making, jewelry shows and private shopping hours.

“Our customers have been with us through so much — a recession and even lockdown. They are our heroes. Without them, we wouldn’t be here right now,” Settle said.

Settle also started carrying various snack items in the front of the store, which have become popular with regular shoppers. Keeping close tabs on what her customers like, she makes sure that she gets more of the treats and gifts that sell quickly.

If you need to find a gift and want to give back at the same time, shop Green Roost’s ethical selection of apparel and gifts today.

Green Roost is located at 141 E Davis St, Culpeper, VA 22701.

This beautiful boutique that supports philanthropic causes just celebrated 15 years in business!

THE SALTED LE M ON

A charming local boutique bursting with stylish fun and flavor.

Whether you need a new cute romper for a night out or just want something that’s well made, The Salted Lemon boutique has everything you need to look and feel your best. Here you will find a curated collection of clothing sets, separates, statement pieces, accessories, footwear, activewear and comfy clothes you just want to live in.

The shop, also known as “TSL” by its faithful local and online following, is owned by a phenomenal entrepreneur named Myranda Herdman, 28, who brings a chic, breezy vibe into her boutique. Her youthful perspective combined with immense dedication and savvy business sense brings in one of the most vibrant and fun clothing collections downtown.

“ We try to hit every female,” Herdman said. “I say all the time, we are everyday clothing for everyday women. We all want to go to

events. We all want to feel good, so I try to focus on comfort, practicality and style.”

Herdman’s knack for hand-picking strategic “capsule wardrobe” apparel from select vendors creates the perfect marriage between quality and price. Sticker shock is not her agenda — but to provide quality clothing you can wear year after year.

“We have our collections going on every week with a very high turnover,” she said “We keep the prices low too. Nobody wants to go shopping and spend $60 on an item and have it sit in their closet. We make sure what you buy here will last and can be worn with many other items in your wardrobe.”

TSL’s motto is “fashion for every woman.” Herdman’s goal is for everyone to feel included and have fun. Therefore, her boutique has something that can appeal to anyone walking in — from some cute handmade earrings to a male lounge set

in the cozy “sideroom” of the store. At The Salted Lemon, you can get a custom shopping experience and a free consultation for creating a capsule wardrobe, which ultimately saves time and money. TSL’s easy selection of basics, neutrals and separates are hand-picked to mix and match to stretch your dollar without sacrificing quality.

“We try to make every collection interchangeable with the previous collection.”

In fact, when Herdman shops her stock, she does her utmost to check each piece in person for its quality and sizing.

“You should be able to wear these clothes to work, when you’re out with friends, at a festival or at home. If I’m not comfortable in it, I’m not going to stock it.”

Before Herdman opened The Salted Lemon’s brick-and-mortar location, she ran her business solely online.

But as the business’s popularity grew, it was clear that she needed a physical location. Though the business is no longer fully digital, she still hosts online collection reveals in which followers can place orders and pick them up at the store.

Herdman’s boutique also supports local female-owned businesses that create everything from hypoallergenic jewelry to custom dog bandana collars and pop sockets for smartphones. This includes hosting in-person events at the store, featuring talent like Southern Brim Hat Co. that taught guests to create a unique custom hat to pair with their favorite outfit.

The Salted Lemon is uniquely fun, refreshing and sweet like a chilled glass of lemonade on a hot day. Come in and take a look at what the boutique has to offer — you’ll be mighty glad you did.

The Salted Lemon is located at 246 E Davis St, Culpeper, VA 22701.

SPELLED INK

The days are full of to-do lists and hustle, but there’s a place you can go in Culpeper that will take you into another world. That place is Spelled Ink, a small bookstore coowned by Heather Griffin and Cindy Pagan — and it’s a treat for the heart and soul. Just look for the cute beach umbrella in the lot behind Skin by NV that marks its entrance.

“Our focus is on creating a magical and welcoming atmosphere for everyone,” Griffin said. “A small, hidden getaway where you can catch your breath for a little while.”

This woman and veteran-owned independent bookstore celebrated the grand opening of its Culpeper location in April 2023. It is the second location of the eponymous bookstore in Orange, acting as the first store’s spiritual sister, creating a “one store in two locations” feel.

At both locations, Pagan sets the perfect mood using her artistic abilities and the generous use of twinkly lights, along with work from local artists, creating a hidden oasis.

“We love the town, and our mission is to bring books to areas where there’s a need, so Culpeper seemed like a perfect fit,” Pagan said.

The bookstore aims to spread literacy and offer a diverse selection of books to places with a need. The co-owners also want to offer a safe space for everyone to come in and escape reality for a bit.

Spelled Ink offers experiences

unlike the typical big-box bookstore. For one, you can “rent the store” for a private shopping experience alone or with a friend. This can also become an unforgettable date night — or even a site for a charming photo shoot.

To reserve a private shopping experience, you can email, call either

location or come in person to inquire about available spots. Typically, coming with a friend makes it more fun. You can also tell the owners ahead of time your preferred genres so they can make sure you have a good selection to browse during your personalized time.

Also, starting in the summer of 2023, Spelled Ink began offering a Manga Club, Write Club, Teen Writing Classes, Book Clubs, Storytime and special one-time events like Book Speed Dating or Book Carving. For the latest updates, follow them on social media.

Book lovers are also invited to the shop’s Orange location to gain a different experience.

You can explore a wide range of subjects and genres between the two locations, so you can always encounter something new and exciting.

For instance, Culpeper’s location currently carries mostly commercial fiction and children’s books. In nonfiction, the focus is on education, travel and the sciences.

“There’s always a little bit of everything tucked away in carts and on shelves as well,” Griffin said.

In Orange, the focus is on historical (both fiction and nonfiction), cookbooks, gardening and upmarket fiction. A variety of handmade gifts are also available around the store to peruse.

Spelled Ink always offers veterans 20% off. Both locations also honor local heroes with First Responder Fridays and Teacher Tuesdays/ Thursdays with a 20% discount per purchase.

So come in and stay for a spell — everyone is welcome.

Spelled Ink Culpeper is located at 138 N. Main St, Culpeper, VA 22701.

LA B EE DA LOCA

Near the end of Davis Street is a charming little specialty shop that is all about bees. Felecia Chavez is the owner, beekeeper, bee educator and bee supplier of La Bee Da Loca, which is a two-story retail experience you’re hard-pressed to find anywhere else.

“I started eight years ago, and I wanted to do something important to me,” she said. “As I saw what was happening to our world, I figured it was time to get back into beekeeping.”

The first floor displays a curated collection of locally-sourced crafts and housewares that embrace a store-wide bee theme. On the second floor, you’ll hear the soft buzzing of many gentle bees — that’s because there’s an active hive on full display.

“This shop is built around this beehive. See the interworking of what a hive does daily, educational classes I hold here so kids and adults can learn about our pollinators.”

In this upper room, Chavez regularly educates guests at this hive about its great complexity and beauty. You’ll

learn about different bee dances, types of bees in the hive, what roles they play, where the honey is stored and where new eggs are laid and growing. No matter your age or stage, you’ll learn something new.

As a specialty shop in Culpeper, La Bee Da Loca offers locally-sourced, sustainable home goods, arts, crafts and honey. Bee education also is a significant part of its specialty.

Homeschool groups, boy scouts, girl scouts and other guests regularly schedule tours of the hive. These classes, which teach people about the valuable roles of bees via its onsite hive, make the store more than a place to buy bee-themed items but a mission to pass on respect for bees and the earth — a legacy for future generations.

“They (guests) are enraptured by the bees,” Chavez said. “When they see them up in their faces, they become more inspired to have a dialogue with their parents, and they’ll bring their parents to the shop.”

Chavez sells a curated collection of locally-sourced artwork from art

shows and other local crafters. She is highly intentional about where she sources her wares — everything is sustainable and free trade.

“I carry locally-made clothing, like these organic t-shirts and sweatshirts from a veteran-owned company using Culpeper clay as dye. We also carry home goods like epoxy cutting boards, woodwork and etched mugs from local artisans and vendors that I shop.”

She also sells handmade jewelry, candles, soap and select decor from around the world. On a given day, you can find unique goods from Mexico and Sri Lanka.

Le Bee Da Loca also has a health side to it. If you’re into natural alternatives, the shop sells relaxing CBD honey and bee propolis throat spray with reported health benefits like boosting immunity.

If it’s just honey you’re after, then you’re undoubtedly going to get one of the most comprehensive options in town. Chavez sells local honey from her hive along with other types of honey from fellow apiaries.

Folks looking to sweeten their tea or the benefits of Culpeper honey for allergies will enjoy the selection.

Over time, La Bee Da Loca has also become a well-known name in local bee conservation. When people find bees in their yard or property, they often turn to Chavez, who points them to a list of experienced bee rescuers in the area.

By educating people about the importance of our local pollinators and being a visible place to advocate for bee conservation, La Bee Da Loca is a powerful advocate for bees, educating people to make the world a friendlier place for all life.

“It’s only fair that you pay it forward,” Chavez said, who is proud to create a visible place in town to spread awareness about honoring our local pollinators.

Come see why La Bee Da Loca has just been voted Culpeper Times 2022’s Best of the Best Beekeeper. A memorable experience awaits you!

La Bee Da Loca is located at 236 E Davis St, Culpeper, VA 22701.

THE FRENCHMAN’S CORNER

Satisfy your sweet tooth at this Belgian chocolate & gourmet shop with delicacies that look almost too good to eat!

If you’re craving something sweet, decadent and totally luxurious, go to The Frenchman’s Corner. Whether you want a fresh scoop of authentic Italian gelato or blissfully smooth chocolate that melts in your mouth — there’s something marvelous to savor here.

Edward Hanlin runs this beautiful sweets shop specializing in high-end Belgian chocolates and other gastronomic delights.

“One of the special things about us is that we are one of the few independent retailers of Neuhaus chocolate from Belgium,” Hanlin said. “You can only get it in the U.S., mostly in Neuhaus boutiques and independent shops like us.”

Neuhaus has been making chocolate since 1857. Over time, the B elgians have perfected the processing of cacao to create one of the best-tasting chocolates on the planet — all while mainly using natural ingredients.

At The Frenchman’s Corner, a creative selection of smooth Belgian chocolates, creamy caramels and artistic desserts are on display behind a glass case.

“I am proud that we can provide excellent customer service to all of our guests and give them the best experience when they are here,” Hanlin said. “I make them feel welcome, like they are the most important person at the moment.”

When you shop for sweets here, you should expect to go beyond the expected. Try chocolates with a bit of heat to take you to parts of the world where sweet and spicy go hand in hand. Encounter new flavors and textures and be transported on a refreshing and eye-opening culinary journey. Chocolate-covered ginger and orange peels, pistachio turtles, chocolates infused with cloves and luscious caramels can all be hand-picked and arranged in a custom gift box.

Don’t like chocolate? Then enjoy some gelato from Italy, which is made with whole milk and infused with flavors that are so much more intense than American-made ice cream. Its creamy texture and bold taste will have you coming back for more.

Short on time? Then take a few steps beyond the glass counter to find a wealth of ready-to-go gifts. Here you will find everything from pre-arranged chocolate boxes to home goods. There’s also paleo chocolate, vegan chocolate, tableware, mugs and other boutique kitchen goods.

On this side of the shop, there are gourmet foods ideal for holidays, corporate gifting or your simple personal enjoyment. These curated picks of fruit preserves, cornichons and other delicacies will enhance any event.

Throughout the day, people stop by The Frenchman’s Corner for many different reasons. Some guests pop in for a spontaneous treat, others need an impressive gift or there may be a bride requesting small chocolate boxes as wedding favors.

“For party favors, we can use all Belgian chocolates or customize a mixture of different chocolates,” Hanlin said. “We have both standard-priced gift baskets for easy selection, but we can also do custom gift baskets.”

When ordering favors for a special event, a two-week minimum advance notice is recommended to ensure you can get what you want.

Hanlin wants to make sure everyone that enters The Frenchman’s Corner feels welcome and can find something they can enjoy. Come in for a spontaneous treat or to find a valuable gift that will delight your loved ones — or to simply give yourself a sweet escape!

The Frenchman’s Corner is located at 129 E Davis St #160, Culpeper, VA 22701.

Nathania Vaught, an esthetician who has over a decade of experience in skincare, is the sole owner and operator of this appointment-only spa. Whether you need a soothing facial, microdermabrasion, dermaplaning or brow tinting, you can find these services and more at Skin by NV.

Before Vaught opened Skin by NV, she worked at a Northern Virginia spa for almost 10 years, earning the trust and confidence of a faithful clientele. In fact, many have followed her to her new location and know the drive is worth it.

Skincare is a highly personal need, so when you find an aesthetician who does it right, people will do what it takes to keep accessing their services.

“I specialize in skincare and do custom facials,” Vaught said. “Everyone’s skin isn’t the same, so why do the same facial for everyone? I like to tailor the facial to the person and add different modalities. For example, I can help someone with fine lines and

SKIN BY NV

acne at the same time by mixing light therapy with microdermabrasion.”

Just want something simple? No worries. Vaught also offers basic facials for hydration and overall brightening. These gentler facials are excellent for people who have a special occasion coming up and just want an extra glow. These facials are excellent “me time” treats or make wonderful gifts for loved ones.

Vaught offers each client who comes to her spa individualized skin assessments. From there, she can recommend a custom solution that can involve revamping your skincare routine, integrating a facial into your routine and adjusting what products you use.

“To get on the right skincare routine, I ask my clients to bring in the products they are currently using,” she said. “Sometimes, we can use way too many products or not the right kinds. Through this consultation, I can tell them what to take out or replace. Often, people don’t have to buy a completely new set of products

but can still use what they have — with some new products in the mix.”

After Vaught gets a good understanding of a client’s condition, she can recommend skin care products and treatments that would work for you. She highly recommends G.M. Collin and iS Clinical skin care products that contain anti-aging ingredients like retinol to improve complexion and texture. Since skincare is always evolving, Vaught attends regular training for these products to maximize her service.

“I’m incredibly excited to be one of the first aestheticians around Culpeper to carry iS Clinical and G.M. Collin products.”

While the spa specializes in custom facials that use particular elements like collagen and champagne foaming enzymes, customers can also get treatment enhancements to their facials. These include microdermabrasion, LED light and dermaplaning.

LED light isn’t a laser, but an infrared light that can stimulate different

effects on the skin ranging from rejuvenation to killing bacteria under the skin. It is useful when a client needs something extra to address a specific skin condition.

“Microdermabrasion is like sandpaper in a vacuum,” Vaught said. “ It removes dead surface skin to promote faster skin turnover and allow products to penetrate and work better. It’s great for pigmentation, scarring, sun damage and acne scars.”

Dermaplaning is another option. This physical exfoliation treatment removes dead skin cells and “peach fuzz” by using a surgical-grade tool to promote cell renewal. Other services like facial waxing and brow enhancements are also available, including tinting to achieve your ideal look.

Overall, if you want to look your best and you’re ready to revamp your skincare and beauty routine, Skin by NV is waiting for you.

Skin by NV is located at 138 N Main St #102, Culpeper, VA 22701.

If you think your skin needs a little TLC, then Skin by NV can help.

Do you enjoy sampling the finer things in life? Do flights of craft beer and wine tastings tickle your fancy? If your answer is yes to either of these questions, you need to sample the selections of ultra-premium olive oil, vinegar and fresh spices at Taste Oil Vinegar Spice (OVS) — where you can do olive oil and vinegar tastings on request! This shop’s specialty is apparent the moment you enter. Unlike an average grocery store with a few bottles of olive oil, you will find more than 40 different types of olive oil and vinegar to taste. From pure olive oils to flavored infusions elevated to the next level of gastronomic creativity, you are in for a treat.

Owner and operator Deb Foley loves to cook and pours that passion into her business, which contains not only specialty olive oils but balsamic vinegar varieties and a hand-picked selection of food and houseware gifts. With a degree in restaurant and institutional hotel management, Foley is uniquely equipped to offer an optimal tasting

experience that is both refreshing and educational.

“It’s fun to work here and be part of my customers’ day,” Foley said, who brings years of customer service into the shop.

Starting as a customer service associate, she eventually worked up to management and bought both locations of Taste OVS.

The oils and vinegar at Taste OVS come from all around the world. Each is high quality, ranking the top spectrum extra virgin olive oil chemistry. Specifically, Taste OVS offers ultra-premium extra virgin olive oil, which is different from the typical oils.

While the label “extra virgin” means the oil comes from a first cold press while falling within specific chemistry standards, the supplier for Taste OVS only brings back oils that rank on the very top end of extra virgin chemistry, known as “ultra-premium.” These are the same oils doctors recommend for heart health.

“Many people buy oil at stores, and they have no idea when they have been pressed,” Foley said. “There’s no crush date or information on when the olives were picked. All our extra virgin oils are pressed within less than four hours of being picked, which locks in the taste and freshness. This puts our oils in an entire league of their own.”

“When you come to our store, you can taste that difference.”

At Taste OVS, you can mix and match vinegar and oils to find the perfect pairings for healthy salad dressings, charcuterie boards or just for cooking. That’s right — the oils can tolerate temperatures up to 450 degrees.

If you need to find the ideal wedding favor or corporate gift, Taste OVS’s “perfect pairings” oil and vinegar sets make excellent gifts. These cute 2 oz bottle pairs that contain one oil and one vinegar variety are neatly packaged in a cellophane bag and tied neatly with a ribbon. For the most choices and to order larger quantities of favors for wed-

dings and parties, contact Foley in advance.

Go beyond the front end of the store to find a whole other enjoyable section where you can find even more gifts. Here, you will see the owner’s passion for cooking — and cheeky humor — sprinkled all over. Napkins, cards and aprons with witty quotes are instant novelty gifts you can give on any occasion.

There are also plenty of made-inVirginia products, hand-blended small-batch spices, food items like chutney, simple syrups, soup mixes, tea and many other treats that enhance any gathering. Reclaimed wood housewares and pottery are also for sale around the store.

When Foley isn’t running the shop, she shares her expertise by speaking at special events. She educates people about everything from the health benefits of olive oil to the differences between ultra-premium olive oil and other options.

Taste OVS is located at 122A E Davis St, Culpeper, VA 22701.

PEPPERBERRIES

Pepperberries is one of the most popular destination shopping spots in downtown Culpeper. Having just celebrated 20 years in business, the boutique has a faithful following of regular clients and out-of-town shoppers, winning accolades like Culpeper Times’s Best of the Best Gift Shop.

Sharon Clark has owned and operated Pepperberries since 2003. Since its inception, the boutique has been a refreshing place. Guests can soak in the carefully chosen selection of gifts like fashion accessories, purses, jewelry, home decor, “feel good” books, baby boutique items and Culpeper merchandise.

“We are a happy place. We’re always bright, colorful and cheery — and we want you to have a happy experience while you’re here. I’m so glad we moved here. This is it for me. I love, love, love Culpeper,” Clark said, who has been a lifelong Virginia resident.

The tagline of Pepperberries is “uptown style, downtown charm,” which is reflected in its variety of high-quality gift items. Clark brings a blend of custom gifts from various sources to her shop. You can find Kendra Scott jewelry and HOBO bags as well as other unique accessories from smaller vendors. Some of the most-wanted items in the store are uniquely made for Pepperberries, too.

“We carry items unique to Culpeper, like 22701 jewelry and pillows. Culpeper pillows are one of our bestselling items. If you are in a small town and you bring something new, people flock to it. It’s great to create new things exclusive to your store,” Clark said.

Pepperberries updates its selections periodically, incorporating new products. To make room for new ideas, Pepperberries also opens a specialty “pop-up shop” for two months with a unique theme. You can find this limited-edition

shopping space right through the entrance labeled “the second door.”

“I like to switch things up and include whatever inspires me. If there is something we like, we just do it. We’ve been doing this for two years, and it’s been fun!” Clark said.

On top of providing top-quality gifts and accessories, Pepperberries specializes in excellent customer service. Clark understands that shoppers want to be treated with great respect and have a pleasant experience, so she does everything to make their experience top notch.

“One of the things I tell my employees is that the first visit is important, but the second is even more important. If they’re willing to come back, then you’ve been successful. We want to be there and form relationships with people,” Clark said.

Having found her home in Culpeper, Clark wanted to give something back to the community. So, she founded “Pamper Me Pink,” which just celebrated its 18th anniversary. This organization raises money throughout the year to pay for men and women who can’t afford their mammograms. Partnering with the UVA Culpeper Hospital, Pamper Me Pink has funded over 700 free mammograms over the years.

“It saves lives, and it’s a great way to give back to the community,” Clark said, who is also an avid community volunteer and on multiple boards and committees.

“Downtown Culpeper is a destination. I don’t believe any of us would be here without each other. It’s not just about Pepperberries, but it’s the whole block. The entire downtown, with the variety of stores and restaurants around, is what makes us special. We are all extremely fortunate to be in downtown Culpeper.”

Pepperberries is located at 102 E Davis St, Culpeper, VA 22701.

OMA’S CREATIVE CORNER

A place where you can find many handmade crafts or request custom gifts and clothing!

The great thing about Downtown Culpeper is that there’s always something to explore. You can find wonderful little shops nestled in the historic buildings dispersed around Davis and Main streets, making each trip unique. Oma’s Creative Corner is one of those fun little places where you can find wonderful handmade crafts and even get something custom made.

Operated by Gizi Carper and her son Mike, Oma’s Creative Corner is named after Gizi, who is the store’s “Oma,” which is “grandmother” in German, where Carper hailed from in 1973.

The shop specializes in custom apparel, signage and drinkware commissions while carrying a variety of unique gifts like handmade organic soap, jewelry, candles, lotion, signage and other handmade crafts.

In fact, almost all of the items in the store are handmade and the rest are carefully selected gifts found around the world and from select small vendors. It’s like Etsy but in person. Unlike the online shopping experience, you can touch and feel the items to know exactly what you’re buying.

“I always wanted to open a craft

store,” Carper said. “My son himself is also a creator. He does 3D printing, custom shirts and wood engravings. Combining our interests, we made a creative little nook where you can find anything and if you don’t see what you need, you can ask for it and we’ll make it for you.”

That’s right — Oma’s Creative Corner allows you to request something completely original. Whether it’s a baby birth announcement plaque engraved in wood or a mug with a custom design, you can make some of the best personalized gifts here.

Mike takes on many custom commissions that employ his expertise in 3D printing and CNC engravings. Anything can be custom made. The shop also takes orders to screen print or embroider one or a large quantity of apparel for special events like a bridal shower or family reunion.

This is the place to go if you want something custom made that is hard to find. 3D printing can create everything from keychains to salt shakers and the technology is only getting better, so check with Oma if her shop can do your commission!

For those unfamiliar with CNC engraving, the acronym stands for

“Computer Numerical Control,” and it’s essentially a computer-controlled cutting tool that can create a wide variety of shapes and designs on multiple surfaces like metal, wood, glass and plastic. This technology delivers accurate results that can be followed up with custom paint to add color. Many customers request wood sign engravings to commemorate special dates and events. Past commissions include custom-printed onesies for babies and embroidered stuffed animals with a child’s birthday and birth statistics.

When it comes to custom apparel, Carper can fulfill an order for personalized shirts through screen printing, vinyl sublimation, embroidery or DFT transfer for smaller batches. If you don’t know where to start, bring in an image or shirt with the design you want.

You’re not limited to apparel either. Customers also request custom coffee cups. Just like with clothing, bring your desired picture or design and Carper can burn it onto a mug. All of the custom drinkware is dishwasher safe, unlike some custom cup varieties, which makes them a long-lasting gift for any occasion. On top of creating unique, custom

gifts, Oma’s Creative Corner supports local businesses. Using her store’s unique skill set, she gives back tangibly.

“If a festival or bingo night is supporting a cause, I typically give something to help out, like free t-shirts for their event,” Carper said. “In this way, I can help with our unique skills.”

Oma’s Creative Corner makes embroidery, t-shirts, cups, totes and so much more all in house.

“We will try our best to create it according to the customer’s request. So far, we haven’t turned anybody down,” Oma said.

Oma’s also carries soap, candles, lotion, jewelry, crocheted hand towels, sewing and crochet items as well as a custom paintings by awesome young artists.

And finally, wrapping up the theme of crafts and bespoke goods, Oma’s Creative Corner also holds occasional classes and workshops for craft making and painting. Check out its website to register for future events as this craft store continues to expand its offerings!

Oma’s Creative Corner is located at 105 Main St, Suite #108, Culpeper, VA 22701.

POPPY + CHALK & SCOOP ON DAV IS

Culpeper’s only Annie Sloan Paint stockist supports local artisans and

When you need to find unique handmade gifts or request custom furniture for your home, look no further than Poppy + Chalk. It’s also a great place to grab a sweet treat since the much-loved Scoop on Davis ice cream shop relocated to the back of the store.

Glenda Jones has been the sole owner and operator of Poppy + Chalk since August 2020. Her deep expertise in furniture painting and customization makes her the perfect person to take over the business. If you need to switch up the look of some furniture, repurpose old furniture or request something new for your home, Jones can help you get exactly what you want.

“I do lots of custom painting for people. I also go out and buy a piece of furniture, normally sturdy older furniture, and then I paint it and spruce it up to give it new life,” Jones said.

Poppy + Chalk is an Annie Sloan Paint stockist, which means it has special permission to sell Annie Sloan paint. Not only is this brand not sold in big box stores, but the title of stockist is challenging to achieve.

All Annie Sloan stockists must be trained in the Annie Sloan method. Authorized stockists undergo a rigorous selection process and ongoing training to make them the best. Finding a store with this certification means a lot. Annie Sloan only works with independent businesses and each store has an individual style, so no two Annie Sloan authorized stockists will be the same either.

“Annie Sloan’s chalk paint is magical. No priming is required, it’s low-maintenance and it adheres to anything — even glass,” Jones said. “Annie Sloan is the original chalk paint artist that

everyone else has copied. I 100% believe in these products and I’ve used many different kinds of paint before this brand.”

Every job is customized, so Jones examines each commission and gives her clients quotes on a caseby-case basis. If you want to start a project, email her with some photos or call and tell her what you’re looking for.

Poppy + Chalk is mindful of supporting local businesses. Inside the store, Jones sells the work of many local artisans.

“Right now, there is work from around 20 exceptional artists in the store,” she said. “I have quite a few people making signs, benches, lamps out of plumbing pipes and more. I always want things to be locally made. It’s great to have small businesses inside a small business.”

Scoop on Davis is a nostalgic old-

time dip shop that offers cups, cones, milkshakes, malts and sundaes! It’s also known for serving high-quality Gifford’s Famous Ice Cream — a super premium ice cream from a small town in Maine.

Gifford’s is a perfectionist brand that would rather pause a flavor’s production than use subpar ingredients. This is ice cream you can’t buy at the grocery store with unique, fun flavors like Southern Peach and Maine Blueberry that’s only made with wild blueberries from Maine.

Stop by for the artwork, crafts and furniture, then stick around for some ice cream. That’s right: Scoop on Davis, the ice cream shop that used to be across the street, is now in the back of Poppy + Chalk.

Poppy and Chalk is located at 172 E Davis St, Culpeper, VA 22701.

N ST YL E FASHION GALLERY

Downtown Culpeper is wellknown for its boutiques that offer high-quality clothing and gifts. N Style Fashion Gallery is one of them, fulfilling a big need: providing designer fashions for “The Discerning Woman” of a particular age. With careful attention to customer service, this boutique has generated a faithful following of fashion-conscious ladies who anticipate the next collection drop. Sandra Reaves-Yates, the owner, manager and stylist of N Style Fashion Gallery, is proud to run a boutique that has become more than a place to shop— but a place for women to enjoy some of the best years of their lives in style while meeting new friends and celebrating their life with all its changes.

“The experience offered at our shop is a relaxing, no-pressure sales zone coupled with over 30 years of experience in the fashion industry,” Reaves-Yates said.

The boutique is at the corner of North Main and West Davis streets. You’ll see a burst of colorful clothing through a display window that invites

you to go inside and explore. Go through the double doors, N Style Fashion Gallery is just to the right.

When you walk in, you’ll be immersed in a tasteful selection of stylish clothing that is mindful of comfort and quality — speaking to the needs of mature women. Guests peruse the hand-picked collections of slacks, skirts, blazers, hats and handbags that are both fashionforward and timeless in their appeal, ensuring their outfits can be enjoyed for years to come.

“I’m particularly proud we’ve been able to gain the trust and loyalty of so many beautiful women in regard to providing their fashion needs. With all the wonderful specialty shops and restaurants in downtown Culpeper, I’m most proud to have so many visitors who consider N Style Fashion Gallery one of their destination spots,” Reaves-Yates said.

Whether you want to stand out on a first date or look your best for a special occasion, Reaves-Yates can help you find the right cut, style and color to make you look your absolute best. Her store only carries boutique

clothing, which means that they have both quality and looks.

Quality means a lot to her customers, so she ensures each piece is wellmade. Reaves-Yates knows that mature women are in the stage of their life where they are more open to getting things they want, not just what they “need.”

“Even if you’re still the same size, a 68-year-old woman’s body is not the same shape as when she was 22. Many of my customers are women over 50 who do not feel their age, nor do they look it, and they want the outside to reveal what is on the inside. I pick N Style’s clothing with that in mind. Helping my customers embrace who they are and what their body is today and working with their style is my specialty,” Reaves-Yates said.

But don’t let age be a factor here — women aged 18 to 88 and beyond can find something here, especially if they are interested in finding quality pieces they can wear for a long time.

On top of providing excellent customer service and a personalized shopping experience, ReavesYates also hosts special “preferred

customer” receptions. These are funfilled days of shopping for great sale deals, drawings, music, munchies, of course, always including a bit of chocolate.

The most recent event was a Mother’s Day shopping event with champagne, DJ, jazz and great conversations among old friends and new while ending the day receiving one of Reaves-Yates’s favorite flowers: a rose.

“I appreciate all our customers and never miss an opportunity to show them during each and every visit. I want to make this the shop where they come in to relieve themselves of stress, put their phones down and forget their worries. I’m pleased N Style can be a place that helps everyone feel relaxed by the time they leave,” Reaves-Yates said.

Stop by N Style Fashion Gallery to reconnect to your stylish side while enjoying one of the best personal shopping experience Culpeper offers.

iN és ON DAVIS

Pronounced

Follow the yellow brick road down one of Culpeper’s historic alleys on Davis Street to find one of the most captivating jewelry and gift shops in town. Just look for the sign that says “iNés” and the arrow that leads you down a long, narrow alley sprinkled with overhead lights, reminiscent of Alice’s descent into Wonderland. It’s one of the most interesting entryways to a shop in town.

What you’ll find here are wonders within wonders.

“I’ve always wanted a jewelry store, so I jumped on the opportunity when there was an opening here,” she said. “I love meeting everyone who comes into town.”

Ines Pesquera has worked with jewelry for over 15 years and decided to open her own shop downtown where she can spend her days enjoying the town, meeting locals and educating visitors about Culpeper. Everything in the store is selected through her tireless in-person and online searches for unique goods that would appeal to anyone.

“By having this shop, I can meet new people and help them find unique gifts,” she said. “When I’m not here, I’m searching for more interesting things to put in the store.”

You can see Pesquera’s passion for wonderful and charming gifts as you enter the store. Whether you want classic sterling silver or gold earrings that match with anything or some fun mushroom costume jewelry, you can find everything from jewelry for the mature person to accessories perfect for a quirky night out, cosplay and even everything to make your Harry Potter dress up dreams come true. Take a turn around the store and you will encounter a variety of unique gifts that are reasonably priced and suitable for everything from stocking stuffers to personalized gifts. You can find earrings with ballerina slippers for the dancer in your life or cute socks from Japan, hair accessories from China, tapestries from South Asia and even antique pottery from the Far East.

Not only does iNés carry treasures

from around the world, but also carries artwork from local painters and potters. Everything on display is for sale and supports local artisans from Culpeper. It’s one of the many ways Pesquera gives back to the community.

“One of my favorite things about owning this jewelry store is meeting new people,” she said. “I love telling tourists about Culpeper.”

In fact, a section of her store is dedicated to Culpeper’s history. There are photos, magazines and old artifacts from our town’s past. Pesquera can tell you where old businesses used to be, how they evolved and how her current “yellow brick road” alley used to be a 10-cent hot dog stand in the mid-century. “It’s incredible how things have changed.”

Pesquera also has a heart for helping other small businesses. In her store, she sells local art that includes stained glass, pottery and paintings, paving the way for them to sell more art and get more exposure.

If you browse through the store’s offerings and don’t see something exactly to your taste, or if you find a ring that isn’t your size, Pesquera’s experience as a jeweler comes into play. She has a special machine inside the store that allows her to press custom designs into metal, meaning she can take custom orders for rings, necklaces and more. If you have a personalized jewelry gift on your mind, Inés is the person to call. Depending on the material, she can also resize rings in her store or from your jewelry box. When in doubt, just ask. She will let you know how she can help you get the desired results. Every time you visit iNés on Davis, you will find something new sprinkled here and there, making it a unique shopping experience each time. Come see the selection for yourself and experience the “yellow brick road” alley that takes you to this extraordinary, charming world.

RUSTY WILLOW BOUTIQUE

Rusty Willow is a much-loved downtown boutique and the winner of Culpeper Times’s Best of Boutique award for four years in a row. Sonya Pancione, the owner of this clothing, accessory and home goods boutique, wants everyone to feel welcome.

“We are on a mission to show others their worth and value in a world where struggles are real, and laughter, acceptance and love are crucial!” Pancione said.

The store is named “Rusty Willow” to remind us all that our unique beauty begins at our roots and how important it is never to forget where you come from. It’s okay if there’s a little rust on your roots because we all have challenges that make us who we are today. So, no matter what you’re going through, you can leave your cares at the door and find happiness here.

This strategically-stocked boutique hones in on multiple age groups and demographics by selecting a variety of apparel and goods that appeal to everyone. Both locals and visitors from out of town can find something they like. To keep things

fresh, Pancione adds new pieces to her collection every week.

“We are intentional about what we select and spend a lot of time deciding what to offer,” Pancione said. “Merchandising collections and making them appealing to my customers is one of my favorite things to do. We value our customers’ suggestions. When travel season is around the corner, or if a major holiday is coming up, we ask them what they want to see in the store. That’s what being a small business is all about — being able to genuinely listen to the consumer.”

Pancione also keeps in mind that when people come into a boutique, they are looking for something that they can’t find in the typical corporate shops. Therefore, she offers a personal shopping experience, assisting customers with everything from accessory selection to finding a new pair of jeans.

“When I help someone embrace who they are now and feel beautiful, it’s the biggest win for me,” Pancione said.

There is something for everyone

here. Rusty Willow aims to carry accessories and clothing that appeal to all ages. Since Davis Street is known for destination shopping, mixed-age groups often shop together. This is why Pancione utilizes the opinions of her daughters, Ashley and Gabrielle, to ensure that the clothing and goods appeal to younger shoppers too.

Notably, Versatotes is one of the boutique’s best-selling items. This nearly indestructible bag is perfect for the gym, outdoor events and farming chores, and is even heavyduty enough for our hard-working teachers.

Judy Blue and KanCan jeans are also very popular. If you see your size, you better snag ‘em while you’re there. Customers love them for their excellent workmanship, slight stretch and quality tailoring that looks flattering on a variety of body shapes.

“Everybody who tries them on loves them,” Pancione said.

Dispersed around the boutique is a curated selection of gifts that includes Kinsley Armelle jewelry,

Mud Pie home goods, seasonal gifts, Culpeper apparel/accessories and other out-of-the-box clothing and gifts.

Rusty Willow is also a consistent donor to The Parkinson’s Foundation. Every time you shop, a portion of every dollar spent goes to the foundation. The boutique also holds an annual fashion show every April. In 2022, they raised $5,000 in one day from the show. This manner of giving back honors Pancione’s late father, who passed from Parkinson’s disease in 2019.

This type of collaboration is only possible with community support. Pancione feels incredibly thankful to be a part of an impeccable lineup of businesses that help each other and their causes.

“We pride ourselves on being a Culpeper business that is community over competition,” she said. “On Davis Street, we are all friends. Community is so important. I am so thankful for the love and support we have for each other.”

V ENTU RA HAIR STUDIO

Imagine a place where it’s all about you; an oasis where you can recharge, sip a cup of coffee, get a haircut or mani-pedi — and just breathe. Ventura Hair Studio delivers on that dream and much more.

Located right across the parking lot on E Culpeper Street and to the right of Uncle Elder’s Family Restaurant BBQ, this salon is a wonderful new addition to downtown Culpeper’s local charm.

Jenny Ventura, a lifetime Culpeper resident, is the studio’s owner and a true master stylist with over two decades of hands-on experience. If you want a next-level experience, this is the place for you.

“Our salon uses high-end specialty products that are better for your hair,” Ventura said. “We offer waxing, haircuts, updos, styling, barbering and much more.”

“We also use all-natural products with organic aloe and other PHbalanced ingredients that don’t

create buildup. Every product we use is naturally healthier and better for you.”

When you enter the studio, you’re in store for a warm welcome and a holistic pampering experience. Not only can you get your haircut, colored, treated and styled, but you can also get a mani-pedi and shop for premium hair products.

Ventura Hair Studio is one of Culpeper’s specialty businesses for three main reasons: its use of natural products, its soothing private atmosphere and excellent customer service.

The studio exclusively uses allnatural Eufora hair products formulated according to the most rigorous standards. The entire line has no parabens, harsh sulfates, formaldehyde and other harsh chemicals often found in other beauty products.

“If I’m not using it in my own hair, I won’t use it on a client,” Ventura said. “We are dedicated to using

products that don’t have extra chemicals that might be harmful to our skin. Those accumulate and don’t make the hair feel or look good. We also use more natural alternatives for keratin treatments and hair color to give smoother results.”

Ventura Hair Studio is set up for clients to get a luxurious and private experience — perfect for a person who wants to try a treatment for the first time or simply needs some time to unwind.

“It’s important to get out of our world and make time for ourselves — it’s your right to enjoy it,” Ventura said.

The calming, non-judgmental atmosphere makes this a great salon for everyone, including children and men. The mani-pedi station has room for two bookings at a time — promising a private experience for guests.

Men can get the full salon experience here. From a regular

beard trim to a full-on mani-pedi, Ventura Hair Studio has a wide variety of services and products to keep men looking and feeling their best.

And finally, the cornerstone of any business is excellent customer service — which Ventura Hair Studio offers tenfold.

“I feel like at the end of the day, our specialty is customer service,” Ventura said. “When our customers walk in, they want to look good and feel good. We want them to feel great, and when they return, we want it like they are going back to see an old friend and familiar face.”

Whether you need to refresh your look with a bang trim or change your hair color, Ventura Hair Studio is waiting to give you a luxurious experience.

Also, if you have any old jewelry, you can trade them here for cash.

When it comes to custom apparel like t-shirts, hats, tank tops and more, O’Connell can deliver triedand-true results with an in-person experience that offers more than the standard online bulk order.

“Some customers come to us after ordering screen printing online and getting a botched order. There’s a big difference between seeing your logo’s colors on your computer screen and seeing them in person,”

O’Connell said. “It makes a difference — especially when you can see and feel the fabric we will print on or embroider. Plus, there are no shipping costs when you pick up an order from our store.”

Depending on the design for screen printing, O’Connell can do a tester piece. If that isn’t possible, she can still show you the exact color ink so you know what you’re getting. Embroidery test patches are also available for every order of that type. O’Connell can customize apparel of all kinds with embroidery or screen printing, including jackets, hats, tank tops, activewear and more. If you have a project in mind, whether it’s just a few shirts or a bulk order for a sports team, ask and she can let you know if it’s possible.

In the Culpeper community, Dava and Thom O’Connell have provided custom clothing for restaurants, landscaping companies, sports teams and countless individuals

looking for something unique. So, if you have a bridal shower or family reunion coming up, know that Triple Image can create custom shirts for your next event.

Clients may walk in with an already established design, while others may have an idea that needs some tweaking. Designs may range from simple to complex, with the ability to accommodate multiple colors. All designs ordered through the store are printed on shirts that are pretreated for screen printing and embroidery to ensure maximum quality.

You’re not limited to apparel either. Triple Image can do custom embroidery for memorable keepsakes like quilt squares and blankets. This is perfect for anyone who wants to give a personalized gift for a wedding, baby shower and much more.

J IM NI

Take a step into JIMNI, and you’ll be transported into a more wholesome time when people worked with their hands and made furniture to last for generations. James Schorr, the owner and operator of JIMNI, has over a decade of experience with woodworking and can make you anything from wood. He can also just look at a piece of furniture and tell you what kind of tree it’s from.

JIMNI is the go-to place to get custom barn doors, desks, engraved signs, heirloom dining tables and even custom guitar stands made of solid wood. This shop has won many prizes, including Culpeper Times’s Best of the Best Custom Furniture and Barn Doors. Essentially, if you can dream it, Schorr can build it!

“We can do pretty much anything people want,” Schorr said.

The heart of this store’s specialty is Schorr’s wood expertise. Over 10 years ago, he started out doing small woodworking projects and soon expanded to making custom barn doors, desks, tables and anything one can imagine. Integrating laser and plasma cutting into wood, he also creates detailed custom signs and other engraved projects.

This shop also carries the work of eight Virginian artisans, featuring cutting boards, knives made of Damascus steel, paintings, pottery and wooden salad bowls. You can also find other unique gifts like wine stoppers and lamps. If you have a custom gift commission, like a wood engraving for a birthday or holiday, Schorr can take care of it for you too.

Unlike other furniture stores with tables that mainly have straight “manufactured edges,” at JIMNI, you can request that the wood keeps its natural, uneven edges. These custom pieces have a gorgeous high-end look with undeniable charm and character. Natural edges look stunning on desks, cocktail tables, dining tables and more. And, of course, Schorr can make you a piece with clean, manufactured edges too.

“Everything is custom here and made of solid wood and is meant to be passed down from generation to generation,” Schorr said. “The tables I make here can last for hundreds of years.”

If you need inspiration about what JIMNI can do for your home, you can stop by the shop and check out Schorr’s portfolio of projects. Inside, you’ll find photos of custom-engraved signs for homesteads, farms and businesses. There are also plenty of photos of handmade dining tables and interior and exterior barn doors, which are among the shop’s leading specialties.

“I will come over myself to measure the barn door area, make the door to those measurements, and then install it myself. No worries, no fuss. The doors can be made to match any decor,” Schorr said.

To ensure that each piece lasts for generations, Schorr ensures that all wood he works with is in the proper condition and humidity level. Overall, commission turnover depends on the type of wood, complexity and time it takes for the wood to be ready.

“For every inch of wood, it takes a year to dry. Sometimes, we can dry kiln the wood to speed up the process, but that has to be done carefully. People can get taken advantage of when ordering custom tables if the person working on it doesn’t prepare the wood correctly; it can crack or twist. If you don’t get enough moisture out, it won’t work,” Schorr said.

Depending on the wood’s condition, Schorr can create something new out of an old building to salvage antique lumber too. However, it has to be in good condition. If you want to see if a project is possible, ask Schorr, and he will give you an honest answer from an expert’s perspective.

Come by JIMNI if you have a custom wood project in your heart that you want to make a reality!

JIMNI is located at 154 E Davis St, Culpeper, VA 22701.

CATS & DOGS AND KINDNESS

A place for responsibly chosen unique gifts and pet necessities.

Where else can you add a little whimsy to your home, pamper your pet and feel good about where your money was spent? At Reigning Cats & Dogs and Kindness, every product is carefully curated to support a cause near and dear to owner Monica Chernin’s and her customers’ hearts.

Behind every homemade treat, hand-crafted collar, whimsical earring and humorous t-shirt is a story and a purpose. Jarred candles support animal rescue. Collar and lead proceeds minister to Dogs on Deployment. Yak milk chews support fair trade workers in Nepal building a better life for themselves. T-shirts fund the rescue of puppies in Ukraine. All globally responsible while providing delight to the heart and mind and pleasure to both you and your bed.

Kindness was added to the store name two months ago to express

its mission to empower people worldwide and here at home. Elegant hand-crafted collars are woven by women in Africa and Mexico. Dazzling one-of-a-kind jewelry from Jewish artisans reflect faith and blessing. Proceeds from the purchase of exquisite earrings help prevent deforestation in the Amazon. Watercolor pet portraits feature the personalized work of local artists.

Customers don’t get lost in the aisles of unique treasures but are drawn into conversations perusing the eclectic range of products, balanced between fun and serious. Tea towels displayed beside compostable doggie waste bags. Shampoos and carpet cleaners alongside garden art and quirky craft creatures.

Pet owners and pet lovers — even those without pets — will find something of interest and curiosity inside the boutique. Reigning Cats & Dogs and Kindness was

voted best in customer service, a testament to the friendly, helpful staff that lend a hand to anyone who may walk through their doors. The resident shop cat may even give you a nod as well, a post she enjoys as a welcome change to her former life as a stray. The store is proudly listed on Safe Space Alliance for the LGBTQ+ community and welcomes anyone and everyone, whatever their political or religious views.

“We are more alike than we are unalike,” reads the last line of Maya Angelou’s poem entitled, “Human Family,” which reflects Chernin’s view of humanity.

Environmental kindness is reflected in the store’s eco-friendly products. Most are organic, pesticide free, manufactured in solar plants or made with recycled ocean-bound plastics. Packaged jerky treats are sustainably sourced in the USA, and some made right here in Culpeper.

Of course, pampering pets is front and center. A bulk treat bar welcomes pet-owners as they come in, offering healthy and, in some cases, homemade biscuits, Yak Milk Chews and cookies.

The store carries Annamaet brand pet foods, from a family-owned manufacturer in Pennsylvania, whose pet foods are corn, wheat and soy free.

Whether you have a dog, a cat or just love animals, you will find Reigning Cats & Dogs and Kindness a fun and welcoming place to shop. Stepping into this unique boutique will make you feel good about giving back to the community and the world.

Lindsey, Lisa, Diane and Autumn look forward to your visit.

UN C LE E LD ER’S FAMILY RESTAURANT BBQ

Uncle Elder’s Family Restaurant

BBQ has been a popular name downtown for almost a decade. Locally owned and operated by Elder Fuentes for nine years and counting, this down-to-Earth barbecue spot gets so busy on the weekends that reservations are required for faster seating.

For its outstanding quality and service, it also just won Culpeper Times’s Best of the Best Barbecue for the ninth time in a row.

Uncle Elder’s has a lot of regular customers, with some dining up to five times per week. Such a devout following and overwhelming support from the community proves that this family-friendly restaurant is the place to get barbecue downtown.

“We specialize in barbecue. It is our passion,” Fuentes said. “We cook our barbecue long and slow, between 17-18 hours per day. That’s why we have a great reputation in this town. We offer unique flavors that nobody really does anymore

because it requires long hours of work. That’s what makes it different from other places.”

All the sauces at Uncle Elder’s are homemade too. They are so delicious that guests buy extra sauces in a container to take home. The most popular flavor is the Original Uncle homemade sauce. It has a little bit of sweet, spicy and salty all blended together. There is also a sweet and tangy mustard sauce and a North Carolina vinegar sauce that you can mix and match with different types of smoked meats.

“Compared to opening day, we have gone from making four gallons of sauce per week to almost 25 gallons, and from 200-300 lbs of meat to now 2,000 lbs per week. Each year, the demand grows,” Fuentes said.

If you have a special event that requires catering, Uncle Elder’s can bring you all the meat and fixin’s. The restaurant also has a food truck that can deliver food on the go with catering services for festivals, birthday parties, weddings

and other hallmark celebrations. Catering is available for gatherings of up to 500 people.

Uncle Elder’s side dishes are also completely homemade and delicious. Classic southern comfort food like fried okra, cornbread, collard greens, hush puppies, simmered apples and mac and cheese are all here — and they’ll remind you of going to your grandma’s house.

There are many different combos and people can build their own platter with choices of meat: brisket, ribs, pork, chicken or ribs. If you don’t eat meat, you can still find something to eat on the menu and definitely won’t leave hungry.

“We are very consistent,” Fuentes said. “Our food is the same quality and that’s why it is recommended so much. We also have something different every week on our weekly specials. These little surprises are here so even our regulars can try something different.”

If you want something different from smoked meats, there are also burgers, crab cakes, salmon and homemade banana pudding from scratch on the menu, ensuring that your entire southern culinary dream will come true.

“We appreciate the support these past nine years from the wonderful people in this town, and we appreciate all the trust people have put in us,” Fuentes said. “It makes us happy.”

Reservations are strongly recommended for parties of more than 10 people and for parties of any size on the weekends.

Fuentes invites everyone to stop by and try out the barbecue and delicious sides for yourself.

“You come in once, you’ll come back for more,” he said with a confident smile.

FR E LA NCE ACCOUNTING & TAX OFFICE

Whether you’re running a business or prepping for tax time, it’s no secret that financial tasks add up quickly. Tax rules change every year, and day-to-day dealings make it difficult to keep track of important expenses that you can write off to the IRS.

Knowing these challenges, Gizi Carper, an accountant with over 25 years of experience, offers her services as a freelance accountant and tax pro at her business, Frelance Accounting & Tax Office. She can do everything from tax prep to day-to-day bookkeeping — all via a convenient “a la carte’’ service.

Carper is the pro you need when you need a bookkeeper but don’t have office space for a full-time employee. All her services can be offered remotely instead of in person, which is perfect for small businesses and startups.

“A lot of people can’t afford an in-

person bookkeeper because that requires an office and full-time pay,” she said. “But they can hire me as a remote freelance bookkeeper and get the same results.”

“I can take care of everything from billing to payroll and sales tax, plus I’m a notary.”

Carper offers flat rate deals for her services that vary depending on the kind of services you want. You can come to her once a year for taxes or you can hire her to handle all your business’s bookkeeping needs throughout the year. When you bundle services, you can get the best deal as she does all the financials and bookkeeping for your business for a flat rate.

Before she started Frelance Accounting, Carper was a government accountant in Germany for many years. She then moved to the United States and continued her career as an accountant in Sterling,

Va., for another 14 years. When rules and regulations change every year, having a person with over two decades of experience is a valuable asset.

If you struggle with tax time or are concerned about doing payroll and employee tax paperwork correctly, Carper is an invaluable expert to have on your side. She has helped people avoid making debilitating tax mistakes in their businesses. She can also advise people on what to fill out on a W-4 before they onboard a new job to make sure they owe as little as possible come tax time. Instead of using DIY tax software, you can have peace of mind that you’re filing taxes correctly with Carper.

“Businesses that are starting out really benefit from my services,” Carper said. “It’s already hard to run the business, and bookkeeping is time-consuming. I free their

schedule by ensuring that their books are taken care of — so they don’t have to worry about the numbers. Instead, my clients can focus on customer service.”

Frelance Accounting is not only affordable, convenient and accessible, but Carper can give her clients ideas on how to save money and optimize their tax returns. She uses her own office space on Main Street, allowing her to be local if anyone wants to meet face to face too.

“I always like to help people out. I love doing bookkeeping. It’s my passion and my craft.”

If you need help keeping track of day-to-day business expenses or need to prepare your taxes correctly, look no further than Frelance Accounting.

Frelance Accounting & Tax Office is located at 105 N Main St, Suite #206, Culpeper, VA 22701.

Frelance Accounting “with one e” is your go-to place to get affordable tax services from a pro with over 25 years of experience.

LILY ROSE & C OMPANY

An exciting journey to find Culpeper’s greatest handmade gifts.

The placard on the sidewalk outside encourages you to come on in, stay a while and chat.

Inside, cheerful and unique handmade creations welcome you and draw you first around one corner and then the next. Adorable kerchiefs, distinctive earrings, delightful primitives, bright floral wreath arrangements, plaques with humorous sayings, tie-dyed t-shirts, plush pillows, uniquely scented candles, delicate macrame… all pleasingly arranged to catch your eye and capture your heart.

Everything and they mean everything at Lily Rose & Company is personally crafted by either one of the three women owners, one of their 22 local craftspeople or a few longer distance vendors whose mission the ladies admire.

“Nothing here is made in China,” said co-owner Kim Bonner.

She and her fellow entrepreneurs, Jillian Denham and Devon Romano, take pride in offering only homemade products and supporting local artisans. Anything on display in their store is either handmade from scratch, reconditioned or refurbished as one-of-a-kind gifts so that visitors can take a true piece of Culpeper home with them.

Their 22 artisan partners are single moms, homemakers, grandmothers and even college students, using their talents to provide extra income for their families and brightening the world with their creativity.

“We love supporting and empowering them, and in turn they empower us back,” Romano said.

Since its inception in November 2022, Lily Rose & Company’s mission has been to support local – their dream to bring together

and provide a unique platform to showcase the community’s artisans.

Their summer grand opening of their new location in downtown Culpeper gives the ladies even more of a presence in the community to promote the talents of their makers and crafters.

Many pieces don’t stay on shelves long, and inventory is constantly changing, which adds to the creativity and uniqueness of the shop. Vendors come up with new ideas or new variations on their offerings. Most do custom orders — if you see an item you love but want it in a different color or in a different size, vendors are happy to craft it into a personalized gift. For many vendors, crafting is their passion, their stress relief and their way to beautify the community.

Love of crafting spills over into the owner’s families as well — among the shop’s offerings are beautiful bracelets made by Denham’s daughter and walking sticks carved by Romano’s son. Perhaps that’s why the place just feels like home to many of their customers.

Just as the shop sign draws you in, the abundant crafts and creations will captivate you for hours.

There are tumblers, tote bags, wallets made from leather from a family’s beef farm, fairy sticks you press into your potted plants to add sparkle and fun, liveedge wood shelving, refurbished furniture, resins, stickers, caps, cutting boards and more. All distinctive. All creative. All waiting for you to explore.

HOMECONOMICS

The go-to destination for making a house a home.

Comforting colors, luxurious fabrics and soft lighting. Sofas, tables, bookcases and decor all waiting to make your place feel more like home. As it should be for a shop named Homeconomics.

Owner Aly Wynham’s goal is to offer customers endless and beautiful possibilities for decorating their own homes with high quality furniture, home accents and gifts at affordable prices.

“I want the customer to feel like this is their place,” Wynham said. And indeed, there are options for customization and personalization at every turn.

Homeconomics doesn’t just sell products but provides ideas and help in arranging and using those products to fit a homeowners’ style and need.

Sofas can be custom designed with choice of style, fabric and color. By

determining where the piece will be in the home, how it will be used and the color scheme of the room, Wynham helps customers narrow down the various choices. She partners with Rowe Furniture, a 75-year-old family-owned Virginia company known for quality, durable custom furniture, to manufacture each individual order.

Quality is at the core of Homeconomics’ mission. Only products of the highest quality are chosen for the shop. Beautiful, yes, but value found in a product that will last without replacing every few years.

Wynham provides other design help as well for those who want it. Bring her a photo of a mantlepiece or an entryway table you’d love to accent, and she will show you a mock-up of what it could look like with plaques, candles, pillows or other pieces added.

If there’s something specific you’re

looking for, it can be specially ordered. Are you looking to buy a housewarming gift for a friend with certain tastes? By asking just a few pointed questions, Wynham can pick out the perfect item for you – at the right price. The eclectic variety of products in the store range anywhere from gifts under $10 to major statement pieces.

Her pillow closet boasts an array of both practical and fun pillows. There are charming yet functional pieces for the kitchen – serving platters, cheese ball dishes, bread boxes, tins, salt and pepper shakers, cutting boards and casserole dishes, many with playful sayings, such as a “I didn’t make it…I made it happen” and “Making s’more memories.” Table settings become magical with cloth napkins, napkin rings and elegant tablecloths.

Seasonal items are popular, especially in the fall and around the

holidays. New inventory graces the shelves with new ideas every few months. Items with Scripture on them reflect Wynham’s faith. Lovely fragranced hand soap in beautifully decorated dispensers don’t stay on shelves long. And customers love to browse the unique selection of Sweet Grace candles whose purchase includes a donation to feed orphans in Haiti, Nicaragua and Hondurus.

Just as the word “Homeconomics” means the art and science of making a home, everything in the shop is chosen for that purpose: decorating your home to welcome family and friends for happy gatherings and memorable occasions. For even more convenient shopping, look for the upcoming launch of the Homeconomics online store soon.

WELL N ES S REVOLUTION

If you are in the market for a fresh perspective on your overall health and skincare routine, then Wellness Revolution is worth a visit.

Stephanie Phillips, FNP-C opened Wellness Revolution in 2018, and in 2022, Jason Dellinger decided to open a location on Main Street right here in Culpeper. Since its inception, it has already won accolades, with one of its most recent being the Best Spa and Wellness Center award from the Culpeper Star Exponent.

At Wellness Revolution, you can get help for a variety of concerns related to your health and appearance. This med spa offers a variety of wellness and advanced aesthetic nurse practitioner services that include general health screening, IV therapy treatments, weight loss services, microneedling with PRP, BBL® phototherapy, body shaping, advanced skin care treatments and medical BOTOX® Treatments.

Phillips is board certified in family medicine, credentialed by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners with an extensive background in internal medicine and cosmetic/medical dermatology. She can give each client a personalized health evaluation. With over five years of experience in cosmetic and medical dermatology, many patients

come to her for help with skin issues that are both medical and cosmetic, like eczema.

“Our goal is to help people be more confident and live healthier, happier lives, whether it’s through skin care, IV infusions, or weight loss treatments,” Phillips said, who has been a Culpeper resident for over 15 years.

Why the name Wellness Revolution? They wanted to create a place that would address the overall person, stimulating a “revolutionary” transformation of the entire person.

“I feel like addressing the inside and outside is important because if we feel good about ourselves, we will project it on the outside, but in order to be healthy outside, you have to be healthy on the inside. Everything about your skin, hair, everything affects the quality of your life,” Dellinger said.

Since Phillips is a medical provider, she can offer her patients prescription-strength remedies like award-winning ZO® Skin Health, a medical-grade skincare line that is excellent at addressing common skin conditions. Patients can get help for rosacea, hyperpigmentation, melasma and more with bonus anti-aging effects. She can also pre -

scribe Wegovy, an FDA-approved weight loss medication.

When guests book an appointment at Wellness Revolution, they can get a health screening to receive a total wellness approach. This method examines the root causes of the person’s health instead of treating the symptoms. Lab testing is available on-site, making the process extremely convenient.

“They come for me for one thing and then can end up seeing me for about three to four different things,” Phillips said. “It’s a more natural, holistic and proactive approach. I love getting people off medication.”

Treatments are based on the patient’s unique health profile. Solutions may range from something as simple as a prescription for ZO® Skin Health to getting a custom IV treatment like the Myers’ cocktail, which is known to be effective in treating migraines, fatigue, upper respiratory tract infections, fibromyalgia, boosting immunity, combating seasonal allergies, improving mental clarity and more.

Wellness Revolution’s latest addition is on-site laser treatments, which have been proven to make patients look 10 years younger with consistent application. Also called

“forever young BBL,” this broadband light also removes hair and corrects broken blood vessels on the face. Phillips also has a certification in Cosmetic (platelet-rich plasma) PRP, a procedure that stimulates collagen and elastin from the client’s own platelet-rich plasma for tighter, smoother skin. It can also help regrow hair upon the early signs of thinning. She also has advanced training and certifications in advanced peel techniques, dermal fillers and Botox.

“Overall, great customer service is so hard to find nowadays,” Dellinger said, “which is why we make sure that we follow up, follow through and provide people with a great experience when they come in to see us.”

If you are curious about approaching your health and beauty from a holistic angle, then come stop by Wellness Revolution. You will join an enthusiastic community of people who enjoy caring for themselves by examining their health through root causes. You can also take advantage of special deals like Botox Happy Hour and Filler Friday!

Wellness Revolution is located at 102 N Main St, Suite #101, Culpeper, VA 22701.
