J I M NI

Take a step into JIMNI, and you’ll be transported into a more wholesome time when people worked with their hands and made furniture to last for generations. James Schorr, the owner and operator of JIMNI, has over a decade of experience with woodworking and can make you anything from wood. He can also just look at a piece of furniture and tell you what kind of tree it’s from.

JIMNI is the go-to place to get custom barn doors, desks, engraved signs, heirloom dining tables and even custom guitar stands made of solid wood. This shop has won many prizes, including Culpeper Times’s Best of the Best Custom Furniture and Barn Doors. Essentially, if you can dream it, Schorr can build it!

“We can do pretty much anything people want,” Schorr said.

The heart of this store’s specialty is Schorr’s wood expertise. Over 10 years ago, he started out doing small woodworking projects and soon expanded to making custom barn doors, desks, tables and anything one can imagine. Integrating laser and plasma cutting into wood, he also creates detailed custom signs and other engraved projects.

This shop also carries the work of eight Virginian artisans, featuring cutting boards, knives made of Damascus steel, paintings, pottery and wooden salad bowls. You can also find other unique gifts like wine stoppers and lamps. If you have a custom gift commission, like a wood engraving for a birthday or holiday, Schorr can take care of it for you too.

Unlike other furniture stores with tables that mainly have straight “manufactured edges,” at JIMNI, you can request that the wood keeps its natural, uneven edges. These custom pieces have a gorgeous high-end look with undeniable charm and character. Natural edges look stunning on desks, cocktail tables, dining tables and more. And, of course, Schorr can make you a piece with clean, manufactured edges too.

“Everything is custom here and made of solid wood and is meant to be passed down from generation to generation,” Schorr said. “The tables I make here can last for hundreds of years.”

If you need inspiration about what JIMNI can do for your home, you can stop by the shop and check out Schorr’s portfolio of projects. Inside, you’ll find photos of custom-engraved signs for homesteads, farms and businesses. There are also plenty of photos of handmade dining tables and interior and exterior barn doors, which are among the shop’s leading specialties.

“I will come over myself to measure the barn door area, make the door to those measurements, and then install it myself. No worries, no fuss. The doors can be made to match any decor,” Schorr said.

To ensure that each piece lasts for generations, Schorr ensures that all wood he works with is in the proper condition and humidity level. Overall, commission turnover depends on the type of wood, complexity and time it takes for the wood to be ready.

“For every inch of wood, it takes a year to dry. Sometimes, we can dry kiln the wood to speed up the process, but that has to be done carefully. People can get taken advantage of when ordering custom tables if the person working on it doesn’t prepare the wood correctly; it can crack or twist. If you don’t get enough moisture out, it won’t work,” Schorr said.

Depending on the wood’s condition, Schorr can create something new out of an old building to salvage antique lumber too. However, it has to be in good condition. If you want to see if a project is possible, ask Schorr, and he will give you an honest answer from an expert’s perspective.

Come by JIMNI if you have a custom wood project in your heart that you want to make a reality!
