GREEN ROOST

Nestled in charming downtown Culpeper, there is a boutique called Green Roost that only sells clothing, gifts and home goods that support a cause.

“Around here, we believe in gifting with purpose,” said owner Kelsey Settle, who started running the shop in 2009 when it was a substore of Pepperberries, another successful Culpeper boutique.

Her passion is to find brand partners that give back and help their own community or another small business.

If you want to give a gift that goes beyond material satisfaction, Green Roost offers much more than quality items. Every product carried in the boutique comes from an ethical vendor that helps someone. For example, ABLE, their most popular fashion line, employs women overcoming difficult situations and is fully transparent about their wages. Its custom Culpeper apparel and gifts, made by local artist Roque Castro, the one who made the depot’s “LOVE” sign, are also popular items.

Settle and her employees all know the stories behind the brands, which helps customers find meaningful gifts. Whether it is a set of pajamas designed by people with differing abilities or jewelry made by women seeking refuge, there are so many meaningful gifts in this boutique. There are also ethical baby, bath, body and food products.

“I do a lot of research,” Settle said. “I spend a lot of time looking for brands that fit my niche that other people would be interested in.”

The boutique has a front end that contains more home goods and gift items, while the back carries predominantly clothing and accessories. The clothing side of the store carries timeless fashion that you could feel good wearing for years.

This slow fashion withstands trends and is easily wearable in a variety of situations. You can trust that the high-quality piece that you buy here will be worth the investment, promising years of style that doesn’t fall with the fleeting trends.

Over the years, Green Roost has developed a faithful following of local and online fans. People can shop the full store online to make sure to get all product drops. The boutique also has a significant following on Instagram and Facebook, where Settle announces new products and connects with her customers.

Shoppers can also subscribe to Roost Insider, a weekly newsletter that promotes the boutique’s new products and special “after-hours” events like charcuterie board making, jewelry shows and private shopping hours.

“Our customers have been with us through so much — a recession and even lockdown. They are our heroes. Without them, we wouldn’t be here right now,” Settle said.

Settle also started carrying various snack items in the front of the store, which have become popular with regular shoppers. Keeping close tabs on what her customers like, she makes sure that she gets more of the treats and gifts that sell quickly.
