McLean 10-11 All-Stars Win State Softball Championship DAVE FACINOLI Staff Writer

With district and state championships to their credit, yet having only played games, the SOFTBALL three McLean Little League age 10-11 softball All-Stars weren’t quite ready to have their summer season end. Now it won’t. The girls team has accepted an invitation to participate in the Tournament of State Champions, which begins July 22 in Clarksville, Tenn. “We have a very solid team with good defense, players who can hit up and down the lineup with a lot of power, and we have great depth,” McLean manager Gerry Megas said. “The girls want to keep playing.” McLean won the District 4 Tournament without playing a game because there were no other teams in the competition. 3-0 to win the title, outscoring those opponents, 42-2. “Our team is talented with great chemistry. The players have worked hard and developed very well,” Megas said. In the state tournament, McLean defeated Westmoreland County, 17-0, in its first game; Honaker, 6-2, in its second; then Westmoreland again, 19-0, in the title game.

Torrie McNabb was the winning pitcher in all three contests. McLean’s top hitters were many. Catcher Alex Schwartz batted .857, Kara Bremser .800, Mariana Williams .667, McNabb .600, Abby Seigel and Elle Ehrlich .500, and Stephanie Beard .333.In addition, Campbell Al-Khafaji, Katie Stein, Kira Lentz, Lindcy Nelson, Madeline White, Morgan Marenburg

and Nicole Mallus provided hits. Every player had a least one hit in the state tournament. Bill McNabb and Jerry Marenburg are the coaches. n In the 8-10 girls state softball tournament, the McLean Little League AllStars finished 4-2, losing their first and last games. In between, McLean defeated Virginia Beach, 19-6, York County, 20-4, Richmond County, 6-0, and Olive Branch, 12-2. The losses were against Grottoes, 7-5, and Mechanicsville, 8-3, in the semifinals. McLean advanced to the state tournament by defeating Great Falls, 20-0 and 15-2, in the District 4 Tournament. The players were Fae Butler, Gabby Colder, Dahlia Fishman, Abby Hart, Emma Hussein, Charlotte Loving, Reese Mamajek, Natalie Martin, Emily Martin, Christie Pacheco, Abby Rebhan, Sara Rollins, Willa Steeg and Zoe Thompson. Brian Colder was the manager and Jamie Loving and Scott Martin were the coaches.

Loring Dolphins and Lakevale Estates Dolphins remained in first place with 4-0 records in Division 4 and 5, Vienna Aquatic and the Tuckahoe Tigers are 2-2 in Division 3 and 1 and Shouse Village is 0-4 in Division 11. None of those teams have submitted results. In the Dominion Country Club League, Riverbend is 4-0 and Westwood is 1-3. Those local teams from the two have not submitted individuial meet results. n Rising Oakton High senior Tommy Hallock set two Northern Virginia Swim League records in yards July 16 swimming for the Fox Mill Woods Fintastics of Reston (2-1-1) at Holmes Run Acres pool in Falls Church. Hallock swam the boys 50-yard age 15-18 freestyle in 21.48, beating a 17year-old record of 22.10. He next set a mark of 24.67 in the 15-18 boys 50-yard backstroke. The old mark was 25.19, set in 1999. Many of the NVSL pools are measured in meters. Some of the older pools, like Holmes Run, are measured in yards. Hallock has been a swimmer at Fox Mil Woods since age 6. He also holds an NVSL record in the 13-14 boys 50-meter freestyle. Fox Mill Woods defeated Holmes Run, 279.5-140.5, in the Division 10 meet on July 16 with Hallock leading the win.
