Signature Events: Business awards, a 5K and more

The Mount Vernon-Springfield Chamber of Commerce presents five signature community events each

BEST IN BUSINESS AWARDS

THE BEST Business Awards stands as a hallmark event in the Chamber calendar, an event dedicated to recognizing and celebrating excellence, innovation and remarkable achievements in the business world.

These awards celebrate individual and collective achievements and serve as a testament to the resilience, innovation and dynamism that define the local business landscape. They honor the trailblazers, inspire the next generation of leaders and reaffirm the values of excellence and integrity that drive success in the business world.

2025 award recipients were:

• The Hilton, Large Business of the Year

• Alban Tire Corp., Mid-Sized Business of the Year

• De Lune Corp., Small Business of the Year

• Fairy Bronze Mother, Best New Business of the Year

• Nonprofit Organization of the Year went to RUN! GEEK! RUN!, a race that has raised more than $230,000 for local charities.

• Scott Stroh III was named Chamber Citizen of the Year for his leadership at Gunston Hall.

“We are incredibly proud of the many businesses that make up this Chamber, and we appreciate all that they do to make this a better place to live and work,” said Chamber Chairman Roberta Tinch.

ECONOMIC OUTLOOK

Economic Outlook 2025 is a community forum where experts from key industries provide insights into the economic course for the current year.

The 2025 luncheon was held at Belle Haven Country Club in early April and presented by Walsh, Colucci, Lubeley & Walsh PC. Speakers included Dr. Terry Clower from George Mason University’s Center for Regional Analysis, Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff McKay, Fairfax County Economic Development Authority Executive Vice President Alex Iams and Bank of America Securities Vice President Stephen Juneau.

Attendees can stay ahead of the curve and make informed decisions in today’s rapidly evolving economy. The event is a joint effort of the chamber and the Southeast Fairfax Development Corp.

CHAMBER GOLF CLASSIC

The annual Chamber Golf Classic is a hit with competitors and is the main fundraiser for the organization’s Scholarship Fund. This year’s event will be Wednesday, Sept. 17, at Laurel Hill Golf Club with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. For almost three decades, this popular event has provided more than $325,000 in scholarships for local high school students to receive further education in a businessrelated field, preparing the next generation of business and community leaders.

All participants need to do is get a foursome together and come have fun while supporting a worthwhile cause. This event sells out, too, so it’s important to reserve a spot early.

THE POLICE & FIREFIGHTERS TRIBUTE

The Police & Firefighters Tribute honors and recognizes outstanding accomplishments of local police officers, EMTs and firefighters from Fairfax County and Fort Belvoir. These public servants work every day to keep our community safe, and this is the business community’s chance to show appreciation for their service. Join this community celebration on Friday, November 7, from 6 until 8:30 p.m., at the Hilton Springfield.

CAN THE BIRD 5K TURKEY TROT

Runners and walkers are sure to love the chamber’s annual Thanksgiving Day CAN the Bird 5K Turkey Trot – and it’s also a “CANned” food drive. This healthy, family-friendly event is a great way to start Thanksgiving. Bring your dog, too!

The race starts in the Walmart parking lot, and participants run through Kingstowne, around the lake and back to Walmart for awards and pumpkin pie. Participants receive a commemorative race T-shirt and swag, along with deals from event sponsors, and awards in a variety of categories are given out. Sponsorship of the CAN the Bird 5K can reinforce a business’ brand within the region and increase the visibility of products and services.

CAN the Bird 2025 is Thursday, November 27, at 8 a.m., at Walmart in Kingstowne. There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer for those who want to give back to the community on Thanksgiving.

Historic sites and architectural wonders

Residents and visitors in the Mount Vernon-Springfield area have opportunities to see sites featuring Founding Fathers, military history, architectural wonders, the oldest African American community in Fairfax County and more.

2025 begins the celebration of the 250th anniversaries of many events leading to the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The most famous tourist attraction in the region is George Washington’s Mount Vernon, home of the nation’s first president. This important national landmark is undergoing significant renovations to prepare it for the 2026 celebration.

In 1754, Washington began living at Mount Vernon, a 3,000-acre estate and

a house that likely spanned about 3,500 square feet. By his death in 1799, his home consisted of about 7,600 acres and an almost 11,000-square-foot mansion.

Today, an estimated 500 acres of this historic property along the banks of the Potomac River have been preserved. In addition to the mansion, visitors can see the estate’s outbuildings and gardens, Washington’s tomb, a slave memorial and a working farm. The museum and education center also traces Washington’s life story.

In addition, the Shops at Mount Vernon offer unique gifts, reproductions of Mount Vernon treasures, books, toys and more. And visitors can tour the fully functioning reconstructions of Washington’s gristmill and whiskey distillery, located 2.7 miles from the

and maintained by the nonprofit Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association. It doesn’t accept government funding, relying instead on private contributions.

GUNSTON HALL

Discover George Mason’s historic home and garden on 550-plus acres with Potomac River views – all just 15 minutes from Mount Vernon.

Visitors can see the rooms where Mason debated ideas and corresponded with historical figures, including four Virginia men who would later become U.S. presidents. Or, they can explore the interactive exhibit, “Revolutionary Rights,” and learn about his role as an influential political thinker, his authorship of the 1776 Virginia Declaration of Rights and why he was one of three delegates who did not sign the Constitution because it did not contain a Bill of Rights. For more information, see gunstonhall.org, or call (703) 550-9220.

Richmond Highway include the Hampton Inn & Suites Fort Belvoir Alexandria South, Quality Inn Mount Vernon and stayAPT Suites for longterm accommodations.

 Located at the center of major transportation arteries, Springfield has several hotels for business or leisure travelers. The Hilton Springfield is near Springfield Town Center and has 248 guest rooms and 7,870

square feet of meeting space. Embassy Suites, Courtyard by Marriot and TownePlace Suites Springfield are also all good options for visitors.

More information about lodging can be found in the directory at the back of this guide or online by scanning the QR code.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY

The National Museum of the United States Army on Fort Belvoir is the official museum for the history of the U.S. Army. It features nearly 1,400 artifacts, flight and tank simulators, a rooftop garden, a 300-degree theater and an activity area for young children.

From the historic “Fighting for the Nation Gallery” to the “Army and Society Gallery,” the artifacts, exhibits and programmatic elements will help you discover new stories and explore the ways our nation has benefited from the innovation and advancement of its Army.

The Experiential Learning Center and Fort Discover offer fun, educational venues for all visitors. Visitors can learn specific soldier skills and then use those skills to respond to a humanitarian mission.

The museum is open daily, with free admission and parking. Timed-entry tickets can be reserved at thenmusa.org.

GUM SPRINGS BLACK HISTORY MUSEUM

The Gum Springs Museum tells the story of the first AfricanAmerican community in Fairfax County. Gum Springs was founded in 1833 on land given to West Ford by Washington’s family.

Gum Springs became a refuge for runaways and recently freed slaves and has maintained its distinct character. Gum Springs now has more than 2,500 residents, and as many as 500 are descendants of the families who first lived there.

The Gum Springs Museum has artifacts and photos of the historic community and the founding families. For more information and hours of operation visit gumspringsmuseum.blogspot.com.

MAGGIANO’S LITTLE ITALY

Maggiano’s has been a staple of the Springfield Town Center for years, but the restaurant’s beginnings date to November 1991 in Chicago.

That’s when the first eatery in what’s now a chain opened on the corner of Clark Street and Grand Avenue.

“The dishes were simple, authentic

classics, many of them coaxed out of Italian grandmothers, mothers and aunts whose ideas of a recipe were a pinch of this and a sprinkle of that,” the Maggiano’s website says.

That first location was successful from the start, and three more would open soon after.

The Springfield Town Center location is a community gathering place and is used for many private events as well as individual, couples and group dining. The food is always well-prepared and served by a courteous staff.

FIREBIRDS WOOD FIRED GRILL

Firebirds Wood Fired Grill is a privately owned restaurant chain based in Charlotte, N.C.

It aims to offer a twist on the notion of grilling, featuring hand-cut steaks and fresh seafood seared over locally sourced hickory, oak or pecan on Firebirds’ exposed wood-fired grill.

The chain also partners with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, having raised about $3.5 million for childhood cancer research through the sale of fresh-squeezed lemonade.

Firebirds was named one of 10 “Breakout Brands” by Nation’s Restaurant News and was awarded the Diners’ Choice Winner by OpenTable. We welcome Fire Birds Wood Fired Grill to Manchester Lakes in the greater Kingstowne area.

Variety of medical services available in area

The Mount Vernon and Springfield areas boast a variety of health care options.

Inova Health System last year began construction of a community hospital on land next to its existing Inova HealthPlex at Franconia-Springfield, providing more

world-class service close to home for the greater Springfield community.

The new Inova Franconia-Springfield Hospital is expected to open in 2028.

Also important to the community is Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, a 237-bed facility.

Home to the nationally recognized Inova

Joint Replacement Center and the Inova Rehabilitation Center, Inova Mount Vernon Hospital is ranked among the country’s top orthopedic and rehabilitation programs. It also administers the Inova Wound Healing Centers, the region’s largest and most experienced centers of its kind, and Inova HealthPlex-Lorton, a full-service facility that combines the latest technology with an array of services.

Inova Mount Vernon Hospital recently opened the Veatch Family Emergency Department, a state-of-the-art facility featuring 35 all-private treatment rooms, new “fast track” rooms to treat less serious injuries, improved ambulance access, new cardiac emergency rooms and a specialized pediatric treatment area, among its many amenities.

Another health care provider in the area, Patient First, offers urgent-care services. Its facilities are open every day, including all holidays, and have on-site labs, X-rays and prescription drugs, which means patients can be seen, diagnosed and treated in a single visit.

Hiking, bird-watching, golf and more are available

the D.C. Department of Corrections facility at Lorton. Architect Bill Love designed the course. Pohick Bay Golf Course, one of Northern Virginia’s most scenic and challenging spots, also offers 18 holes.

Private golf clubs provide challenging golf experiences along with the benefits of membership.

FHuntley-Meadows Park and Laurel Hills Golf Course (inset photo) are just two of many recreational amenities.

From woods to wellness, the Mount Vernon-Springfield area provides a wealth of indoor and outdoor recreational opportunities.

Residents and visitors can stroll through a wooded park, watch birds on the Potomac River or enjoy the premier facilities at the St. James wellness facility.

Lake Accotink Park in Springfield allows visitors to enjoy the natural resources of Lake Accotink and Accotink Creek, whether they’re hiking, biking or setting out on the water. It also has areas for picnics or special events.

The hustle and bustle of the Washington area seems a world away when traversing Lake Accotink’s trails or taking a quiet moment to sit by the water.

Nature lovers also can take a walk in Huntley Meadows Park and see wildflowers, wetlands, beavers and a notable house. That’s historic Huntley, a 19th-century Federal period villa built for Thomson Francis Mason, Alexandria’s mayor from 1827 to 1830 and a grandson of George Mason, who wrote the Virginia Bill of Rights.

Wildlife is a frequent sight at Huntley Meadows, with more than 200 bird species having been identified in the park’s wetlands, the Fairfax County Park Authority notes.

Another way to experience the outdoors is to play golf at one of the Fairfax County Park Authority’s courses, which range from par-3 to championship length.

Laurel Hill Golf Course, for example, spans 18 holes on land that used to house

Belle Haven is a private, family-oriented country club, just south of Old Town Alexandria in Fairfax County and nestled along the banks of the Potomac River adjacent to the George Washington Memorial Parkway. What began as a modest 9-hole golf course and clubhouse in 1924 has grown into a full-service club boasting an 18-hole golf course renovated by world-renowned architect Arthur Hills, five indoor and eight outdoor tennis courts, two platform tennis courts, pickleball play, a state-of-the-art Fitness Center with group exercise rooms and an outdoor seasonal pool.

For over 60 years, Springfield Golf & Country Club has been a haven for members and their families to gather, relax and enjoy the finest in country club amenities and social events.

From the golf course to the tennis courts, the pool to the patio, they provide a holistic experience to their member community.

Mount Vernon Country Club is situated on one of George Washington’s original seven farms. Over the past 20 years, the club has continued to develop, including significant golf course improvements also designed by Love.

In 2014, the clubhouse had an interior renovation and in 2016 major improvements were made to the golf course, making it a favorite gathering place for the community.

The George Washington Memorial Parkway is a 7,600-acre national park that stretches from Washington’s Mount Vernon estate all the way to Interstate 495. It protects the landscape, historic sites and native habitat of the Potomac River shoreline while providing trails for walkers, runners and cyclists.

Fairfax County also provides several facilities for fitness and recreation, while local clubs have opportunities for children and youth to learn and compete in different sports.

ort Belvoir is a U.S. Army installation in southeastern Fairfax County that is home to more than 150 Department of Defense agencies and partners dedicated to protecting the security of the nation.

The base provides training, technological developments, research and intelligence-gathering agencies in support of our national defense.

Fort Belvoir covers more than 9,000 acres, with four distinct areas:

• The main post, where nearly 150 defense agencies reside

• Fort Belvoir North, home to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, and slated to be a future Intelligence Community Campus

• Davison Army Airfield, headquarters of The Army Aviation Battalion

• Rivanna Station near Charlottesville, a sub-station of Fort Belvoir and home to the U.S. Army’s National Ground Intelligence Center

With nearly twice as many workers as the nearby Pentagon, Fort Belvoir is the largest employer in Fairfax County, with an annual economic impact of more than $25 billion to the region. Almost 7,000 service members from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Space Force work on post, with more than 17,000 Defense Department civilians employed there.

The greater Northern Virginia community supported by Fort Belvoir’s services include off-post active-duty military, active-duty dependents, Army Reservists, and retirees and their dependents, all of which total more than 216,000 people.
