LEGOLAND Brick or Treat

Weekends this October, families will experience the spooky, kooky fun of one of the only kid-friendly Halloween events in Central Florida. At LEGOLAND Florida Resort’s Brick or Treat, guests will enjoy safe, neighborhood-style trickor-treating with plenty of candy, seasonal shows and exclusive LEGO characters in the ultimate kids Halloween celebration— and, it’s all included in general admission. Parents can confidently set out with their costumed kiddos on their candy quests to six awesomely themed trick-or-treating locations that have been thoughtfully planned to allow extra spacing for families and contactless distribution of candy. In addition to social distancing, all employees at these stations will wear face coverings (masks and/or face shields) and gloves. The fun keeps coming with the return of fan-favorite shows, The Groovin’ Graveyard and A Candy-Coated Curse. These spirited performances will have showtimes throughout the day on all nine event dates. This year’s event also celebrates the return of character experiences to LEGOLAND Florida with a spooky squad of characters that guests can only see during Brick or Treat. www.legolandflorida.com

Sesame Street Kids Weekends at Busch Gardens Everyone’s favorite, furry friends are getting into the Halloween spirit with Sesame Street Safari of Fun at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay every Saturday and Sunday in October. Included in park admission, the modified Sesame Street Kids’ Weekends events feature additional health and safety measures including limited capacity to offer physically distant trick-or-treating, an open-air Halloween show for families to enjoy together and new special character experiences. Children can dress up in their Halloween costumes to enjoy traditional trick-or-treating that is safe with physical distancing at Busch Gardens. Candy stations will be spread out throughout the park’s spacious, open play area where ambassadors wearing gloves and protective masks will distribute candy in a contact-free manner. Families can enjoy physically distant photo opportunities with Sesame Street friends like Big Bird, Oscar and Grover in their finest Halloween attire and upgrade their day with the new Cookie Decorating with Cookie Monster. The Count’s Not-Too-Spooky Howl-O-Ween Radio Show is sure to entertain the whole family in the outdoor, Sunny Day Theater with physically distant seating. www.BuschGardensTampa.com 6 - October 2020

Halloween Spooktacular

at SeaWorld Orlando

Halloween fun returns to SeaWorld Orlando this fall with Spooktacular now through Nov. 1. At this special event, modified to allow guests to safely visit the park with limited capacity, children can dress in their Halloween costumes and take part in fun-filled trick-or-treating around SeaWorld’s expansive grounds with physical distancing in mind. In addition to enhancing the park’s already strict health and safety measures, capacity will be significantly limited to create even more open space for a visit that provides ample opportunity to maintain social distancing. The daytime Halloween fun takes place every Saturday and Sunday starting through Nov. 1 and is included with park admission. www.SeaWorldOrlando.com.

A Halloween treat awaits those who successfully complete the stalk. Guests can share their Halloween spirit and don family-friendly costumes while visiting Universal Studios Florida and Universal’s Islands of Adventure. www.universalorlando.com

Little Monster Books

Bedtime rituals, monster-style. Take a standard "getting ready for bed" picture book, add in a good dose of Halloween monster stuff, and you get this delightful tale.

The Unbudgeable Curmudgeon

Have you ever seen a curmudgeon that looks like your brother, but is in such a bad mood you hardly recognize him? You can try all the peanut butter sandwiches and brownies you have, but he is not moving. Nothing works, eventually you have no choice but to fight back--and then... Have you ever become a curmudgeon that just won't budge? A playful depiction of bad moods and sibling rivalry.

Creepy Pair of Underwear! Crankenstein

There’s plenty to be cranky about out there in the world, even—or maybe especially—if you’re a kid. Faced with the slings and arrows of early wake-up calls, miserly Halloween candy givers, melting Popsicles, long lines, cough syrup, and bedtime, the fearsome Crankenstein can only respond with a baleful look and a groaning “MEHHRRRR!” The only possible cure for such terror? Laughter, naturally, which comes along with play and friendship and puts a total, if temporary, kibosh on the crankiness. 10 - October 2020

The comfiest, creepiest underwear you'll ever wear! A ghoulish, greenish glow. If Jasper didn't know any better he'd say his undies were a little, well, creepy. Jasper's not scared obviously, he's just done with creepy underwear. But after trying everything to get rid of them, they keep coming back! A hilarious story of a brave rabbit and a very weird pair of underwear. Family News

Orchard Academy has moved

Alliance, educators partner to supply art kits to virtual learners

The Alliance for the Arts and Lee County Arts Educators Association (LAEA) have partnered to supply individual art kits to students who are learning virtually this year and might not have access to art supplies. The organizations have distributed 750 art kits this September and are just shy of their overall distribution goal of 1,000. "Words can't describe how much we appreciate the support of the Alliance and their donors. Our student artists mean the world to us

and acts like this are what is going to help keep the arts alive for Lee County students during this challenging time," says Samantha Hower, arts educator and LAEA president. Just 250 shy of the goal, the Alliance is currently accepting donations of 24 count crayons, 12 count broad tip markers, glue sticks, 4 oz bottles of glue, watercolor sets and colored pencils. Community members may also make a gift toward the project by visiting www.ArtInLee.org/Donate.

Orchard Academy has relocated to 13410 Shire Lane, Fort Myers. Now in a bigger and better location, Orchard Academy is right across the street from the South Trail Fire Department. They are now offering weekend child care – nine hours on Saturdays as well as extended hours during the week! “We take pride with our well trained, vetted, Level II background checked, licensed & insured, caring, compassionate & fun staff,” reports Orchard Academy.

Free autism screening for young children Oct. 23 in Fort Myers

Health department offers free flu shots at pop-up, walk-up test sites The Florida Department of Health in Lee County (DOH-Lee) is strongly encouraging all unvaccinated residents to get their flu shot as soon as possible. Flu vaccination is the best way to prevent the flu and its potentially serious complications. DOH-Lee began offering both free influenza (flu) and Hepatitis A at all pop-up walk-up COVID-19 test sites in midSeptember. The flu vaccine is available to anyone age 6 months and older. Anyone not feeling well will not receive the flu vaccine. The Hepatitis A vaccine is available to anyone age 18 and older. The best time to receive a flu vaccine is before flu viruses begin spreading in the community. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection against flu so plan to get vaccinated early in fall, before flu season begins. CDC recommends that people get a flu vaccine by the end of October. For more information about the Florida Department of Health, visit www.FloridaHealth.gov.

Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age. The next screening will be held on Oct. 23 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Pediatric Specialist Office, 15901 Bass Rd, Suite 102, Fort Myers. It is estimated that one in every 59 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well. The ASD screening is conducted by the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. The screenings are administered by an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, who has extensive training and experience in typical child development and developmental disorders. A physician referral is not required. To schedule a screening, call 239-343-6838.
