1,000 Books Before Kindergarten The Lee County Library System has enhanced its early literacy services with the redesign and relaunch of the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program and the addition of a website section specifically for families with young children. These efforts come as educators nationwide look for opportunities to reach young children before they enter kindergarten. The additional library services complement the library system’s diverse collection of books and resources for young children while providing support to parents and caregivers as they navigate their child’s first years. “The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program is more than a reading log,” said Amy-Jane McWilliam, youth services coordinator. “As a parent tracks the books they read with their child, they also learn about the five early literacy practices of reading, writing, singing, playing and talking and the significance these practices have

10 - March 2021

in their child’s start to school.” The website for Early Literacy programs for children up to age 5, is www.leelibrary.net/prek or parents may visit any Lee County Library System location. Families with children up to age 5 who have not started kindergarten can participate. The program is flexible and self-paced. The program provides examples of simple family activities to encourage the development of pre-reading and writing skills. As children progress through the 1,000 Books program, they will receive rewards like stickers, books, musical instruments and bubble wands. It takes just a minute to get set up and every child that registers receives a free book and sticker. The Lee County Library System has 13 branches to serve Lee County residents. For more info about other library services and programs offered, visit www.leelibrary.net.

Written by Candace Cameron Bure, New York Times bestselling author and star of the hit TV series Full House and Fuller House, this charming, laugh-out-loud picture book tells the story of a little girl who quickly realizes one thing after her mother signs her up for ballet lessons … she’s no ballerina.

Kids Minds Matter hosts online event March 18

Join the Southwest Florida community on March 18 in uniting as one voice for the thousands of children struggling with mental health issues during this free virtual event. This event is your first step in providing hope for thousands of children who desperately need access to mental health care in your back yard. It is no secret that COVID-19 has greatly impacted our community, businesses, nonprofits, and families. The isolation and uncertainty have also led to long-term mental health implications. Our children are suffering and keeping up with the growing demand is a challenge. Through generous donations, strategic planning and collaboration with community partners, access to care is increasing across the region, though the need continues to surpass available resources. Our community is facing a mental health epidemic, and it is only going to get worse unless we come together to show our children they are not alone. The pre-show, including local mental health resources, starts at 6:30 p.m. The event begins at 7 p.m. with emcee Kellie Burns, NBC-2 anchor, and keynote speaker Brad Hunstable, whose 12-year-old son died by suicide in spring 2020. Free autism screening for young children March 26 in Fort Myers Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age. The next screening will be held on March 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pediatric Specialist Office, 15901 Bass Rd, Suite 102, Fort Myers. It is estimated that one in every 59 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well. The ASD screening is conducted by the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. The screenings are administered by an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, who has extensive training and experience in typical child development and developmental disorders. A physician referral is not required. To schedule a screening, call 239-343-6838. Family News
