Clinton’s past is traced to the arrival of Scottish Irish immigrants two decades before the American Revolution. The city itself was officially incorporated in 1852, taking its name in honor of Henry Clinton Young, a lawyer from Laurensville, who helped layout the first streets. Today, Clinton is the second-largest city in Laurens County, with 7,694 residents. A City Manager/Council form of government governs the city.
Prior to 1852, the City of Clinton was called Five Points because it arose at the intersection of four major roads and the railroad. As the railroad began to grow, so did the city, and more plots of land were developed around the railroad. With the population’s growth came the establishment of the First Presbyterian Church in 1855 and is now the home to Presbyterian College.
Clinton is often admired for the historic buildings that are still in mint condition today. Many buildings in the district display architectural characteristics of the period dating from 1875 to the 1930’s.
Since 1984, the City of Clinton is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This recognition is correlated with several locations such as Clinton Commercial Historic District, Duncan’s Creek Presbyterian Church, and Thornwell-Presbyterian College Historic District.
The City of Clinton has prime acreage and a skilled workforce, making it an ideal location for industrial growth in advanced manufacturing, food, or logistics. This small town also offers a unique lifestyle experience with its motto, “visit for the experience -stay for the lifestyle.” People in the community have different stories of how they got there, but the small-town way of life is why they stay. Ask around and you’ll soon find out why many choose to call Clinton their home.

The dam, the mill, and the town were born in the same year - 1902 - and the Ware Shoals Manufacturing Company (later renamed Riegel Textile Corporation) shaped the community and its citizens for more than 80 years .
The Hickory Tavern Community is located on Highway 76, a few miles north and west of the City of Laurens. The community, originally known as New Market, is believed to have been named for a tavern operated by Henry Burrows in 1800. The tavern was located in a grove of hickory trees. Today, Hickory Tavern is a thriving community with several businesses, churches, and a school located there. Hickory Tavern is a center of growth for northern Laurens County as newcomers and residents of the more populous counties to the north relocate to that area.
Nestled in the northwest corner of Laurens County is the town of Gray Court, originally named Dorroh or Dorrohville in honor of a local family. On October 17, 1899, the name was changed to Gray Court, and the town was chartered three days later. The town has a Mayor/Council form of government. A small community, vibrant with history and well worth a visit, interesting information can be found at gcohistoricalsociety.org. Fountain Inn takes its name from the old inn with a fountain that attracted travelers seeking rest from the tiresome stagecoach journeys between Greenville and the Low Country. Fountain Inn has a population of 10,995 residents. It has a Mayor/ Council form of government. While it is part of Laurens County, a large portion of the town is also located in Greenville County. Andrew Johnson, the United States' 17th president, came to Laurens County from North Carolina and opened a tailor shop in 1824. He met and courted a local young woman. Johnson wished to marry her, but the woman's mother forbade it because he was a tailor. Soon after, Johnson left.
Explore The Culberston Backcountry Settlement
The Culbertson Backcountry Settlement, located on Old Georgia Road in Gray Court, was established by the Gray Court-Owings Historical Society to preserve historic structures from the 1700s and 1800s in the area. Covered wagons and stagecoaches used this road to transport settlers to Georgia, and
the Dorroh Inn, which still stands on Georgia Road just west of Old Laurens Road, served as a stagecoach stop where the driver would signal the number of people needing food or lodging by blowing his horn. The Settlement includes several historic structures such as the Atwood-Robertson log cabin, Gray-Nesbitt log cabin, a blockhouse, Piney Grove African-American School, Ora Old Fields Presbyterian Church, Anderson Corn Crib, Blacksmith Shop, and outhouse, each with its unique history. During this time, conflicts between settlers and Native Americans were common, leading settlers to use blockhouses like the one located
in the Culbertson Backcountry Settlement for safety. Additionally, the area saw Revolutionary War battles involving patriots and combined forces of Native Americans and Tories.
The Community of Mountville, located on Highway 72 between the City of Clinton and the Town of Cross Hill, has the distinction of occupying two locations in its history. In its early days, a star mail route running from Laurens to Chappells resulted in the establishment of a post office in the Beaverdam community. The post office was given the name of Mountville, perhaps because of a steep, mountain-like hill rising from nearby Ginger Creek. In 1892, the Seaboard Railroad was completed through that section of Laurens County in a location about two miles from the original post office. Over time, a new railroad town developed that eventually supplanted the original location of Mountville. That location continues today as a quiet, well-established community in southern Laurens County.
Joanna is the largest nonincorporated community in the County, with 1,270 residents. For many years the community was known as Goldville until its name was officially changed on August 1, 1948. During the War Between the States, the community around the railroad was known as Martin’s Depot. On the night of April 30, 1865, Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his entourage spent the night at the nearby Lafayette Young House during their escape from Richmond at the close of the war.
The Town of Cross Hill is located in southeastern Laurens County. The area was a north-south Native American path across the fish dams on the Broad River and leading to the fish dams on the Savannah River. Many years ago, someone crossed the first path on a hill and gave Cross Hill its name. Today the Town of Cross Hill is a modest community of 480 residents and is governed by a Mayor/Council form of government.

Worship & Service

William Plumer Jacobs was called to become the first pastor of the church in Clinton, where he lived the remainder of his days (he was also instrumental in the founding of Thornwell Orphanage and Presbyterian College). The original church
burned in 1929. It was rebuilt in stone Gothic-style structure on the church grounds.
The First Baptist Church of Laurens, originally known as Laurensville Baptist Church, was organized in 1834 with Rev. Nicholas W. Hodges as pastor. The charter membership consisted of just 16 people. The Battlefield Trail begins from a parking area on Horseshoe Falls Road (handicap accessible for 0.1 mile and open sunrise to sundown) and winds through the rolling hills of the northern wooded area of the park and site of the 1780 battlefield. On the other side of the river is the British Camp—the ruins of the Musgrove House and the Mary Musgrove Monument are located on this 1.5 mile trail, through woods near the Enoree River.
