Mountville, located along Highway 72 between Clinton and Cross Hill, has a distinctive history tied to two locations. Originally, the Beaverdam community was home to a post office named Mountville, named after a steep hill near Ginger Creek. However, in 1892, the construction of the Seaboard Railroad two miles away spurred the development of a new railroad town, eventually replacing the original Mountville. Today, this quiet and well-established community in southern Laurens County remains rich in history, with a population of 122.

The Town of Cross Hill is located in southeastern Laurens County. The area was a north-south Native American path across the fish dams on the Broad River and leading to the fish dams on the Savannah River. Many years ago, someone crossed the first path on a hill and gave Cross Hill its name. Today the Town of Cross Hill is a modest community of 480 residents and is governed by a Mayor/Council form of government.

Joanna is the largest nonincorporated community in the County, with 1,270 residents. For many years the community was known as Goldville until its name was officially changed on August 1, 1948. During the War Between the States, the community around the railroad was known as Martin’s Depot. On the night of April 30, 1865, Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his entourage spent the night at the nearby Lafayette Young House during their escape

Worship

More than 270 local religious institutions provide worship and fellowship for the citizens of Laurens County. The spiritual community is composed of a variety of congregations, both new and old. In fact, some of the most beautiful and richly historic buildings in the County are its churches, which have been standing over one hundred years.

First Presbyterian Church, Clinton was founded in 1855 by a group of Scotch-Irish settlers in the Upstate of South Carolina, with a congregation of 400 today. In 1864 the Rev. William Plumer Jacobs was called to become the first pastor of the church in Clinton, where he lived the remainder of his days (he was also instrumental in the founding of Thornwell Orphanage and Presbyterian College). The original church burned in 1929. It was rebuilt in stone Gothic-style structure on the church grounds.

The First Baptist Church of Laurens, originally known as

Laurensville Baptist Church, was organized in 1834 with Rev. Nicholas W. Hodges as pastor. The charter membership consisted of just 16 people. In the early years, the church struggled to exist — being reorganized in both 1851 and 1876. Today, the church has an active resident membership of more than 800 people and continues to be active in ministering to our community and supporting missions worldwide.

Eighteenth-century churches include Duncan Creek

Presbyterian Church, organized in 1764, Old King’s Chapel Methodist Church, organized in 1789, and Liberty Springs Presbyterian Church, organized in 1767. The Baptist denomination has 101 churches in the County, while the Presbyterians have 19 churches and Methodists 21. Laurens County is also home to several other denominations, including AME, Catholic, Episcopal, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Latter-day Saints, Lutheran,

Pentecostal, Wesleyan, and others. Although Laurens County holds tight to traditions and the rich history, many local churches offer contemporary services weekly.

Laurens County Capital Sales Tax (CPST) projects are dedicated to enhancing infrastructure, public safety, and recreational spaces, making the County an even better place to live. Funded through a one-cent sales tax, these projects support community growth and improve quality of life for residents and newcomers alike.

Laurens County is embracing its rich history while investing in a dynamic future through two standout projects funded by the Capital Project Sales Tax (CPST): the restoration of the historic Laurens County Courthouse and the construction of the new Agriculture and Business Center.

At the heart of downtown Laurens, the Laurens County Courthouse has undergone a stunning renovation. Originally built between 1837 and 1840, this 14,000-square-foot Greek Revival building was restored by Craig Gaulden Davis to reflect its 1911 architectural elegance. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the courthouse remains a beloved local landmark. It now serves as a functional space for County Council meetings and public events, with plans underway to add a visitor center and exhibit space. More than a government building, the

courthouse is a treasured symbol of Laurens County’s heritage and continues to serve as a favorite backdrop for photos, festivals, and community gatherings.

While the courthouse honors the county’s past, the largest CPST initiative is building toward the future. The new $8 million Agriculture and Business Center, located at 308 Osborne Road in Laurens, is a bold investment in the county’s agricultural and economic growth. Designed by GMK Associates, the 22acre complex will feature a multipurpose building, office space for Clemson Extension and the South Carolina Forestry Commission, and dedicated facilities for events like livestock shows, rodeos, and cattle exhibitions. This center not only celebrates Laurens County’s deep agricultural roots but also promotes tourism, community involvement, and economic development.

Together, these CPST projects reflect Laurens County’s commitment to honoring its history while creating opportunities for the next generation.
