Dear Laurel Creek Members,
I am honored to step into the role of Interim General Manager and serve a club that means so much to all of us. I want to begin by expressing my sincere gratitude to Joel Inman for his many years of service, leadership, and progressive vision. Joel’s dedication has helped shape Laurel Creek into the vibrant, welcoming, and forward-thinking club it is today, and we owe him a great deal of thanks. I also want to extend my appreciation to the Board of Trustees for their trust and support in appointing me to this position. I am excited to continue working alongside our outstanding team of department heads, whose daily efforts, expertise, and passion are the backbone of everything we do. Laurel Creek thrives because of their dedication, passion and the strong, collaborative culture we’ve built together.
During my time at Laurel Creek, I’ve been fortunate to build strong relationships with many of you. If we haven’t had the chance to connect yet, I truly hope we will soon. Family plays a big role in my life, and to help you get to know me a little better, I’ve included a photo of mine, my wife Diana, and children Chase, Lily, and Rory. After all, family is at the heart of what makes Laurel Creek so special.
As far as what we have going on at the club, we’re excited to re-open the pool for the season; Memorial Day was a fantastic kick off! We have wine shows, wine dinners, seafood nights, family golf nights, and a new Member/Prospective Member Golf Cup! We encourage you to register for these wonderful events, and hope you find something to enjoy each time you’re here.
I also want to hear from you, our members. Please don’t hesitate to reach out — whether it’s to share feedback, ideas, or simply say hello. My door is always open, and I look forward to continuing to build on our great momentum together. June is here, and Laurel Creek is buzzing with all the energy and excitement that summer brings. The courts are full, the course is busy, and the pool is the place to be on the weekends. But before we dive into everything ahead, I’d like to take a moment to reflect on a major transition. As many of you read last month, our respected General Manager, Joel Inman, has officially left Laurel Creek to begin a new role at Montclair Country Club in North Jersey. I submitted my May article before the news was shared, so I didn’t have the chance to express just how much Joel has meant to me and to our entire team.
Joel has been a tremendous mentor over the past nine years. He’s been the kind of leader who empowers those around him and always leads by example. I’ve learned so much from him, and I will miss him both professionally and personally. His presence here will certainly be felt for a long time to come.
A week before his departure, the executive management team gathered at Tommy’s Tavern to celebrate Joel and share one final toast. It was such a special evening—full of laughter, gratitude, and reflection. We presented him with a signed Laurel Creek golf flag as a token of our appreciation, and I think it meant a lot to him. I’m including a few photos from that night so we can all remember that heartfelt sendoff.
On a lighter note, I’m thrilled to announce our inaugural Prospective Member Cup, taking place this month! This event invites our current members to bring a friend, colleague, or neighbor who might be interested in joining Laurel Creek. We’ve already got 10 teams signed up, and there are still a few openings left. After the round, spouses will join us for a fun cocktail party to close out the day. If you have someone in mind, don’t hesitate to reach out—it’s going to be a fantastic afternoon!
Also in this month’s newsletter, you’ll find our annual Graduate Recognition pages, which showcase the achievements of our members’ children. Whether they’re graduating high school and heading off to college, or receiving college degrees and pursuing their next big dream, we’re proud to celebrate them all. Be sure to check out the following pages—you might even spot a familiar face or two.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: THE CHALLENGER DIVISION AND A HEART FOR INCLUSION

Earlier this spring, I heard a beautiful story that I felt compelled to share. It started with a conversation with Krissy Grossman, one of our longtime servers at Laurel Creek. She was glowing as she talked about an incredible day she shared with her son who has autism when he played baseball for the very first time. That opportunity came thanks to a program run by two of our members: Paul and Heidi Bourke.
Paul and Heidi lead the Challenger Division of Mount Laurel Baseball, a league specifically designed for children with special needs. What moved me most is that they don’t have a child with special needs themselves—this is something they felt called to do.
“When I was six, I had a traumatic brain injury,” Paul shared with me. “For a while, I was a child with special needs. It’s a miracle I survived. I’ve always wanted to give back, and this just felt like the right way to do it.”
The Challenger Division is open to kids with autism, ADHD, Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other diagnoses. Enrollment is completely free. Uniforms and equipment are donated, and each child is paired with a volunteer “buddy” who supports them on the field. “We focus on building confidence,” Paul said. “Every Sunday afternoon, we just want these kids to feel proud of themselves and have fun.”

But it’s not just the kids who benefit—it’s the parents too. “We’ve had grandparents say they never imagined watching their grandson play baseball. Parents hug me with tears in their eyes. One mom said her non-verbal son kept repeating ‘baseball’ after his first game. That means everything to us.”
The league has grown tremendously—from 8 players its first year to 32 ballplayers this season, ranging from age 7 through high school. They’re divided into four teams and supported by a matching number of teen buddies who volunteer weekly. And for the first time ever, this season featured player pitching, with kids stepping up to the mound themselves. “It was amazing to watch,” Paul said. “Some of these
To wrap up the season, the league held an end-of-year barbecue. When I mentioned it to Joel, he said, “Let’s do more than lend them a grill—let’s supply all the food.” Thanks to his generosity, nearly 100 children and families were treated to burgers, hot dogs, salads, and desserts—all from Laurel Creek. “I felt appreciated, valued, and connected,” Paul said. “And the families raved about the cookies!”
Looking ahead, Paul hopes the program will continue to grow— maybe even fill all six fields at Laurel Acres one day. He dreams of former players returning as mentors and even hopes for a visit from the Philly Phanatic. But more than anything, he wants to keep making Sunday afternoons the highlight of the week for these families.
“Don’t take life for granted,” Paul told me. “Carpe diem. That’s how we run this program— making the most of every minute.”

Given that this is my first time writing a newsletter to the membership, I would be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to introduce myself to those of you who may not know me—and to share what Laurel Creek Country Club truly means to me and my family.
Long story short, the Fernandes family has been proud members of the club since 1999. My uncle, Manny Fernandes, first brought me to Laurel Creek when I was just five years old
As the years passed, I spent countless summer days golfing with my dad, Vic, my brother, Bryan, and occasionally my mom, Jen. We dined at the club often and looked forward to every parent-child tournament on the calendar. My brother and I spent our summers in golf camp, learning the game from the late Ken Zimmer and from our now Head Golf Professional Emeritus—and my fellow staff member—Glen Gardner. Talk about full circle.
All of this has led me to where I am today: serving in my dream role as Head Golf Professional at Laurel Creek Country Club. I am incredibly honored to step into this position and to work alongside our fantastic golf staff and the broader team of department heads.
My goal is simple: to help continue the upward momentum of this great club and to ensure that all of you—our valued members—create the same lasting memories at Laurel Creek that my family and I have cherished over the past 25 years.
I look forward to seeing you out on the course.
LCWGA
GAP Matches, Wednesday Tournament play, Nine Hole Match play, first round Secretary’s and President’s Cup and the Moorestown Cup kept the ladies of Laurel Creek busy during the month of May! The GAP Team finished fourth in the 12th Cup and they will remain in that Cup next year. The season ended with two team wins and 24 individual points. Players for the year were: Christine Blessing (captain), Heidi Bourke, Eileen Burke, Susan Kaufman, Donna McHugh, Stephanie Moccia, Susan Schaming Odegard, Eileen Ramasamy, Janie Spitznagel and Linda Toogood. Congratulations to all for a great season.
Nine Hole Match Play on Tuesday May 13th at Laurel Creek kicked off the year with a soggy day against Riverton Country Club. While Riverton was triumphant (3.5 points to 1.5 points) the ladies were undaunted with the rain and wet course. Lunch was hosted by the Laurel Creek ladies and enjoyed by all. A shout out to the following LC players: Heidi Bourke, Rita Gordon, Jennifer Halfpenny, Dana Phipps and Joanne Seltzer. Thanks to Susan Studley for Chairing this League. Other matches are being played against the following teams: Medford Lakes, Merchantville, Moorestown Field Club, and Ramblewood. Results will be reported in the July Newsletter.

At this writing The Moorestown Cup @ Laurel Creek on May 29th has not been played. Stay tuned for results in the July Newsletter. Good luck to all playing in the President’s and Secretary’s Cup. Can’t wait to announce the victors!

With the pool now open, Oasis is serving frozen drinks, and Creek Creamery is making delicious sundaes. The pool heater works great, with water temperatures around 85°F. Starting Father’s Day, we will be open seven days a week. Once we are daily, we’ll bring back popular specials like Tuesday dollar dogs and Mexicali Mondays.
Chef Pete is aiming to offer a wider variety of options at the pool this year! Additionally, we’ll introduce a menu change halfway through the summer.
This year our kids’ concert is going to be Power Pop Dance Party! This will be an evening filled with upbeat music, fun dance challenges, and all your favorite pop hit from current pop stars. Kids of all ages will have a blast dancing, jumping, and singing along to catchy tunes designed to keep everyone moving. Come dressed to dance and enjoy a lively atmosphere that’s perfect for making new friends and creating unforgettable memories.
We’re also excited to announce a new event: Deadly Details on July 14th. Phil Chamers, a serial killer profiler with 40 years of experience, will join us to discuss his work and strategies for catching notorious criminals. It promises to be entertaining, educational, and a must for true crime fans. Reserve your spot now—limited availability!

DIRECTOR OF GOLF COURSE OPERATIONS
There are currently patches of discolored Bentgrass on some of the fairways. So, does that mean the soil is dry? While off-color turf certainly may be dry, there are several other possible causes as well. This would include dormancy, insect damage, or a turf disease.
This last option is the cause of what we’re presently seeing on the Bentgrass. Specifically, this is a root-borne pathogen called Take-All Patch. While we’ve had this disease show up to some extent each spring, this year there appears to be a larger area affected than in the past. As with most turf diseases, Take-All Patch thrives in a relatively narrow temperature range--when it’s really cold or really hot, you typically won’t see any damage.
It’s a little frustrating to see this disease show up, since we have made preventative fungicide applications in the fall the last few years. The good news is that while Take-All Patch may temporarily discolor the turf, it rarely lives up to its name. Most years, the symptoms are gone by July 4.
