The British Hedgehog Preservation Society says the bonfire pile should be moved entirely before lighting, using something like a broom handle to lift it from the base, checking the centre and bottom of the pile. Use a torch and listen out for any hissing sounds, which is what a hedgehog would likely do if disturbed. If your bonfire has to be built in advance, try wrapping chicken wire around the bottom to stop hedgehogs getting in - but make sure to check it before lighting, just in case.

Remember, remember… to keep an eye out for local wildlife this November!

7www.wadebridgelife.com

In order to do this, you should carefully move the bonfire on the day of lighting to ensure it is not home to some unaware little prickly pals.

For some great advice on what to do if you come across a hedgehog and to support the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, go to www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk.

When it comes to lighting the bonfire later in the evening, make sure you light it from one side to give any nesting hedgehogs - or other wildlifethe opportunity to escape in peace.

Wrapping up and gathering around a crackling bonfire on 5th November might be fun for us - but it’s important to spare a thought for the vulnerable wildlife that might get caught up in the dangers of our annual November celebrations.

Hedgehogs in particular often see piles of crunchy leaves, wood and other bits and pieces as the perfect opportunity to set up a cosy nest. That’s why it’s so important to triple check your bonfire set-up before you light it - bonfires around November 5th are a huge threat to hedgehogs at this time of year.

If you do happen to come across a hedgehog in your bonfire pile, pull on a pair of gardening gloves and carefully move the hedgehog into a cardboard box with air holes and some newspaper, towels, food and water. Keep them away from the bonfire and once the celebrations have finished and the fire is completely out, release the hedgehog into a nice wild area so it can be on its way.

Returning after a break from Covid-19, Wadebridge Carnival in July was a hit with the community, bringing everyone together to celebrate with plenty of colour, sparkle and music thrown in along the way!

While the main carnival took place on Saturday, 23rd July, there were events leading up to the day, including the royalty choosing on 4th June in the Jubilee Field, where Isla Mai Linzey was selected as the Carnival Fairy Queen.

With 23 entries, the carnival shop window competition saw Countrywise bag 1st prize with their beautiful ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ display, featuring Cornish pasties and the Eden Project at the end of the yellow brick road. Save the Children Wadebridge came second with ‘Storm in a Teacup’ and Malcolm Barnecutts on Molesworth Street came third using four windows for four songs. Mayor Amanda Pennington attended to give out the prizes. The big day soon rolled around and it was all go as the committee came together to welcome carnival-goers to the Jubilee Field on 23rd July, which kickstarted with the Family Fun Day, featuring circus workshops, a bouncy castle, games and rides for children and lots of refreshments throughout the day. At 6pm, the judging of the carnival entries took place at Egloshayle Field before the 7pm carnival parade - what everyone had been waiting for! There was a spectacular mix of entries, from the weird and wonderful, to the noisy and hilarious - sounds like the perfect recipe for a fantastic carnival! The carnival committee’s choice for their float was Wadebridge fire station, dressed up as escaped dinosaurs! 8 www.wadebridgelife.com

CarnivalWadebridge wows crowdsthe

Crowds headed over to the Jubilee Field for the evening celebrations, which included music with The Strutts.

A spokesperson from the committee said: “A big thank you to everyone who helped out with the carnival who aren't on the committee, such as marshalls and volunteers.

Tasks will include taking part in various fundraising events and activities, which allow the annual carnival to go ahead, plus helping to organise the big event for 2023.

The Wadebridge Carnival Committee are on the search for some new volunteers to join their team to help them put on a cracking event for the town in 2023!

The peace of pottery painting Kilncraft and the community Helen Morton is the proud owner of Kilncraft, a quirky little shop nestled in Wadebridge high-street where you can paint a pot whilst tucking into waffles and ice-cream or coffee and cake! Wadebridge locals may remember it being a hardware shop for many years before its fabulous new makeover! So, what prompted the change? Helen told Wadebridge Life that she wanted to do something that had ‘a bit more meaning to it’ and to create something that offered people more of an experience. She said: “One day I was walking along a beach, and I saw loads of washed-up tennis balls and I thought, ‘Why am I selling these if they’re just ending up here?’” So she took the steps to create a business that was more in line with her own ethics. After 16 years of running hardware shops, Helen finally followed her dreams and created the Kilncraft that we can all enjoy today! From this space, Helen provides workshops, such as ‘potters wheel lessons with Astrid’, plus takeaway pottery kits, ‘bring a bottle evenings’ and kid’s parties.

>> COVER STORY

The peace of

Not only does Kilncraft offer a fun experience for friends or a messy afternoon with the kids, it also is a great place for community groups, with local not-for-profit clubs being offered accessible rates to enjoy the space and Theactivities.shop is used by groups such as the memory café, the WI and Brownies, Guides and Rainbows, to name a few.

As well as her special offers to schools, Helen has taken further steps to make the pottery painting more accessible to local children by offering an after school club, where for £10 children can get as creative as possible - with some ice cream thrown in Thetoo!hope of Kilncraft becoming a CIC, is that it will ensure Helen’s community outreach plans are more sustainable and enable her to reach more groups and offer more to the community. Pottery painting can be a therapeutic activity; it is very mindful, which can benefit mental health, and Helen is interested in inviting more regular groups of all ages to benefit from the positive, peaceful qualities pottery painting has to offer in our fast-paced Helenworld. has made sure that for Halloween she is stocked up with lots of pottery pumpkins of all sizes for some spooky autumn fun and over the next few months Kilncraft will be offering discounts on the Christmas baubles to help you get ahead for the festive season! So, if we have a wet and wonderful autumn, remember you can have a hot chocolate, stay cosy and paint a pumpkin to scare away the winter blues at Kilncraft! You can find Kilncraft at 15 Molesworth Street. Visit www.kilncraft.org for more information. 17www.wadebridgelife.com

For future community projects Helen has set up a CIC (not for profit) company to run alongside Kilncraft. An overwhelming observation that Helen has made since running Kilncraft as a commercial enterprise is that ‘affluent families’ are the only ones with access: “Our main aim for the CIC is to give the opportunity to everyone. Everyone should have the opportunity to be creative, to touch clay and to paint.”

Helen also supports community fundraising events by offering heavily discounted rates to schools which enable them to sell them on and raise money for important enrichment opportunities for the children. Local families may have noticed the beautiful rainbows provided by Kilncraft that were painted by St Breock School for their rainbow run!

Helen’s daughter, Ella, has also been making beautiful clay sunflowers for customers that raise funds for Ukraine with each purchase. In their last sunflower campaign, they raised £612. This summer they have continued to raise over £100 and they hope to have raised another £100 by the time this edition reaches your door!

Before The Coffee Gets Cold is a heart-warming and magical story, and centres around a small speciality coffee shop tucked away in Tokyo. The coffee shop seems typical at first glance, but holds a special power - the customers can travel back in time. However, there are some strict rules when it comes to time travel. You must be seated in the one, specific chair and you must return to the present before your cup of coffee gets cold. We meet four customers and go on a journey through time. Without revealing too much, these customers and their personal stories are what make the book so warming and cosy. I think it is the perfect autumn book - a good read to curl up with a hot mug of tea or hot chocolate. Toshikazu Kawaguchi is a Japanese writer, born in Osaka. Before the Coffee Gets Cold was originally a play, before it became so popular that he adapted it into a short novel. A few team members of the Wavehunters Surf School in Polzeath were lucky enough to come across some dolphins during the summer. The school said that at this time of the year, the ‘ocean is alive with the marine life’, with dolphins and whales often working together to get their meal.

Wadebridge Town Council and Wadebridge Library are holding a Christmas card competition for all budding young artists aged 7 – 11 years. The winner will have their card design printed to be sold locally, will receive copies to send to friends and family and will also win family tickets to Wadebridge Town Council’s Christmas Panto ‘Cinderella’. To enter, call into Wadebridge Library to pick up a template and sketch your design, then hand it in at Wadebridge Library, Southern Way, PL27 7BX. The closing date is Tuesday 11th October. Want to make use of the library but can’t get out and about? The Home Library Service delivers, free of charge, to those who can no longer visit a library because of health, mobility or caring responsibilities. Also taking place this autumn is Get Online Week, 17th - 23rd October, which inspires people to do more online and learn new digital skills through Learn My Way, offering free online courses to learn digital skills in order to stay safe, connected and make the most of the online world. If you are in or near the water and spot amazing sea life, like dolphins, the best way to enjoy their company is to keep your distance, be respectful and to avoid harassing them. Have you seen any amazing wildlife, both in the sea or on land? Send a photo to content@life-media.co.uk. An Dolphins spotted!

The group received support from Olympic Gold medallist Callum Jarvis, who has trained in the leisure centre’s pool in the past, and from Andy Jameson, the well-known Commonwealth Games presenter, who gave a shout out during this year’s Commonwealth Games to the success of the community’s acquisition of the centre.

26

A proactive member of the group is Amanda Pennington, Wadebridge’s very own Mayor. Amanda told Wadebridge Life that after the closure announcement was made in October, the community campaign group were able to submit an expression of interest in November, followed by a full tender under very competitive conditions.

From what started as a protest group of passionate locals, a marvellous team of experts emerged and secured the leisure centre’s continued existence as a community interest (CIC) company for the community.

Last October, Wadebridge nearly lost its leisure centre when Greenwich Leisure Limited (‘Better’) announced their decision to close its doors. However, the Wadebridge Leisure Centre had some powerful friends!

Friends of Wadebridge Leisure Centre

Afterwww.wadebridgelife.commonthsofnegotiations, their group - which became known as ‘Friends of Wadebridge Leisure Centre’ - won the contract on 8th July. This is fantastic news for Wadebridge to ensure a positive community centre that perhaps, most importantly, gives the community access to a Amandapool.said: “A total of 11 primary schools use this pool to teach local children how to swim.” She added that due to the pandemic, many children haven’t had access to swimming lessons, an important skill for local children to acquire considering the huge influence the coast has on Cornish community and culture.

Amanda explained how their aim is to continue to build a welcoming facility for local sports and community clubs and to ‘make sure everyone is equally valued’. The positive plans continue into the consideration of the sustainability of the new sports centre. Amanda explains how they plan to ‘reduce their reliance on hydracarbons’, and that they have been exploring the idea of a ground source heat pump or a district heat scheme for both the centre and the secondary school to reduce costs for both organisations.

27

It is clear that this new facility will be ‘run by the community, for the community and benefiting the community’.

LOCAL NEWS <<

After months of uncertainty, it was a huge relief for the existing staff to finally know that their jobs were safe. The Friends of Wadebridge Leisure Centre officially took over the running of the centre on 1st September. The team is ‘motivated and excited’ for the leisure centre’s new chapter!

To celebrate the official new opening of this community lead sports centre, there will be a ‘Grand Launch Event’ on the 17th of September. The event will take place between 10am and 3pm at the Wadebridge Sports Centre where there will be lots of free ‘have-a-go’ classes, including aquafit, aero biking and fitness/dancercise. It is clear that this new facility will be ‘run by the community, for the community and benefiting the community’

Amanda continued: “We have also partnered with Wadebridge School, and we aim to make sure that the schools get maximum use out of it.”

It has been a lifelong ambition of Wadebridge man David Morgan to participate in the London Marathon, but having finally been accepted to join 80,000 athletes on Sunday 2nd October, David has been putting in hours of training week-on-week to prepare himself for the challenge.

challenge!ultimate Supporting

David said: “Running is quite a lonely sport; I'm used to playing rugby and participating in team events where you have support around you, but just sticking your headphones in while putting one foot in front of the other is not only physical, but mentally challenging as well. But I think to myself that the short while I'm struggling along the trail is nothing compared to what some young children are going through.”

>> LOCAL NEWS

Since February, he has been running three times a week along the Camel Trail, as well as attending a running club in Newquay twice a week.

Over the years, the charity has funded over 300 research projects which bring hope of kinder and more effective treatments for children and young people who are diagnosed with cancer, as well as helping families deal with the burden of their child's diagnosis.

To donate, visit David’s Just Giving www.justgiving.com/fundraising/davidmorganlondon2022page: www.wadebridgelife.com 29 takes the children with cancer while running the London Marathon

In addition to his physical training, David is also hoping to raise £3,000 for Children with Cancer UK, a charity whose vision is to create a world where every child survives their cancer diagnosis.

David said: “Although I’ve not felt the effects of this disease so close to my heart, I believe that no child should have to start their life in this way, and nor should families have to see their child go through it. Hearing and listening to families I've met about their story really is heartbreaking and makes me more focused and more determined.”

Why

Wadebridge Life magazine will be delivered for free via Royal Mail on a quarterly basis to all PL27 6 & PL27 7 postcodes. But for people outside of the postcode area that Royal Mail will deliver to, it means they miss the magazine - which means potentially missing out on the all-important community information and fantastic businesses to support in Wadebridge. We are looking for some points in and around Wadebridge - Padstow, Rock and Polzeath - that would be willing to take a stack of magazine copies of each issue so that passers-by, tourists and visitors can pick up a copy and see just how fabulous Wadebridge really is! This would work particularly well if you are a community hub or library, a cafe, central shop, estate agent, clinic or surgery, hairdresser or somewhere that sees a steady flow of people pass through each day. We would also love to hear from holiday cottages, lodges and hotels in the area that would like to take some copies for their guests to read! The Cornish Dahlia Society was formed in the early spring of 1981 with the aim of promoting the growing and showing of Dahlias in Cornwall. A lot has happened since then, with Dahlias losing and then gaining popularity. They have never been so popular as they are now. The society holds two quality shows a year including a three-day show at The Lost Gardens of Heligan. A few dedicated members also grow, plant and tend an incredible display of over 1,600 plants. The society has members of all growing experience from all over the South West and advice is always on hand, whether you just grow for the garden or for the show bench. Members can enter the People’s Dahlia competitions for just one flower from the garden, novice classes for those just starting out and classes for the experienced grower. There are a number of successful dahlia breeders based here in the South West. Everyone is made very welcome. “We never say ‘no’ to someone, but we do like to work with someone so that we know they’re getting the support they need. If someone calls us, we can have a box waiting for them and can support them throughout their crisis.”

Sadly, the foodbank’s figures have shown that the use of the service is on the rise. Between 1st April and 27th June 2022, the figures are up by 90% compared to the same period last year, likely to be caused by the cost of living crisis, in-work poverty, job loss and redundancies, rural challenges, debt, homelessness, benefit cuts and more.

The number of people in emergency accommodation has risen by 300% from 2019. Since April this year, the number of people fed by Wadebridge Foodbank is 1,234 with 504 of those being children.

Once St Breock has finalised the design they are going to be calling upon the local community to get involved to help transform an unused, overgrown patio into a dementia friendly, sensory and accessible garden for all to enjoy.

Local school children have been putting their creative hats on to design a brand new outdoor space for the residents of St Breock. Thanks to Tesco's Community Grant Scheme, as well as a donation received from friends and family in memory of the late Ron Bray, St Breock has been given funds to help make their garden more dementia friendly and suitable for residents. This Cornwall Care home is affectionately known as ‘St Bee’, so the team want to continue to encourage bees and other wildlife into the garden for residents to enjoy, as well as to protect the environment. Allan Apples Spell

“Take an Allan apple Peel it in one continuous peel Throw it over your shoulder And it will give you the first initial of the person you’re going to marry! But if you take an Allan apple and put it under your pillow… You’ll dream about them!” 45www.wadebrudgelife.com

A Samhain Spell

Discover who you will marry with this traditional spell…

‘Nancy’s Garden’… Nancy, the daughter of a squire, wanted to marry William, who worked on the farm. William often approached Nancy’s father and would say: “Please, I’d love to marry your daughter.” Her father said ‘no’ every time. Eventually he said: “If you can give her a life with money and land, then you can marry her.” So, William decided to go to sea to make his fortune and Nancy said she would watch for him every day, from the top of the cliffs. While Nancy waited, she began to plant a garden. One night, William returned and from Nancy’s Garden, they followed a moon beam to William’s ship. But William’s ship was wrecked only days before and William lost at sea. …And if you go to this part of Cornwall, somewhere along the Fowey cliffs, you can still see Nancy’s Garden. Halloween can be traced back to the ancient Pagan festival, Samhain (pronounced Sah-win) which falls on 31st October. Wadebridge Life met with Kathy Wallis who, in 2021, was made a Bard of the Gorsedh Kernow for her contribution to Cornish culture, traditions and community. We asked Kathy to tell us her favourite spooky story and for a traditional spell that may have been regularly practised in Cornwall, and perhaps still is! Kathy said: “Well my favourite story is not necessarily just for Samhain, but it is about ghosts!”

In addition to being a central point for community groups and people to come together, Concern Wadebridge provides walkers and mobility scooters to visitors and local people, for a small charge - £5 for wheelchairs and walkers a day and £12 a day for a scooter.

Tucked away in a peaceful corner of Wadebridge, what was once the railway station for the town is now known as the John Betjeman Centre, home to Concern Wadebridge. Run by manager Emma Burt and her wonderful team of volunteers, Concern Wadebridge is a charity to support people over 50 in the area, but the John Betjeman Centre can be used by groups and people of all ages. In the 80s, the centre underwent a huge refurbishment to give the railway station a new lease of life. It was officially opened in 1991 as the John Betjeman Centre, and received a further £450,000 for refurbishment in 2018, including new toilets, community cafe and kitchen - which was packed to the rafters when Wadebridge Life popped along to visit on a sunny afternoon in July.

With free parking, rooms with multimedia facilities and plenty of space, a snug, friendly cafe area and so much more to offer, the centre is the perfect place to meet friends, come together with likeminded people and enjoy the wonderful sense of community that echoes through the team and centre.
