Studios on the High Street transformS empty spaces into artistic havens… A ‘summer of art’ truly took hold of Launceston during those balmy days between June and September, and it has been lovely to reflect on all the wonderful local talent we are lucky enough to have here in our lovely community. Towards the end of this year’s Causley Festival, a 95-metre long strip of community printing was rolled out along the whole length of Church Street and up to the porch of St Mary’s. The Mayor looked on, artists guided the roll-out on its way, people marvelled, children ran about, cars stopped politely: this was the first exhibition of Maddy Meaden’s ‘Sprint Print’ and a fitting climax to a wonderful couple of months when our local artists have really taken to the streets of Launceston. Three projects were in progress in June and July and all three gave a clear impression of the impact that local artists can have on our town. Maddy was one of a dozen artists involved in the Tresorys Kernow ‘Studios on the High Street’ project which created temporary studios at 17 and 22 Church St and the White Hart Hotel. At no 17, Swanskin Printers and the Hello Project ran free drop-in print workshops daily for two months and hundreds of people dropped in, made a print or a picture and chatted to people from town they’d never met before. No 22 was a base for Janie M McDonald who was helping people to discover their favourite parts of town and for Richard Hudson to run workshops with school children. Sam Akroyd was at the White Hart, painting his ‘Portrait of Launceston’ - 20 superb portraits of people in the town.

Meanwhile, the fourth Shop Window Exhibition was again placing another 20 artists’ work in shop windows throughout the town centre and Launceston Camera Club - in 2021, the leading camera club in Britain - held a summer show in the empty ‘Jag’ shop on Castle Street, all of which turned the town centre into a free open-air gallery!

Transforming the town centre into a showcase for local artists - a place where people can come and make art themselves, be encouraged to discover and share what delights them about their own town - has breathed some new life into the town centre; signposting, perhaps, some elements of what we need more of in the life of Launceston of the future. a summer of art!

One local artist decided to put her talent to use during this uncertain time and produced a beautiful piece of work showcasing Launceston’s most iconic historic structures. Artist Angie Harris thoughtfully painted a silhouette of the town across the stretch of long canvas, including the ‘Nearly Home Trees’, Dunheved Cross, Southgate Arch, war memorial, Launceston Castle, roundhouse (formerly the butter market), Packhorse Bridge and finishing with the steam railway. Now, Angie has kindly decided to gift this wonderful original painting to the community, and Launceston Life is delighted to be facilitating this. We are looking to create a town trail to house this beautiful piece of artwork over a few weeks, and with so many art events and exhibitions having taken place across Launceston in the summer, our community is really proving to be a centre for the arts! If you are a prominent organisation and would be interested in displaying Angie’s painting for the trail, please get in touch with Rosie on content@life-media.co.uk to register your interest.

Chairman Dave Gordon is at the helm of the carnival committee, and is looking forward to welcoming back the community to this special event, encouraging everyone to get as involved as possible. After a two-year break from the carnival, this is the perfect time to embrace your creativity and imagination - build a fantastic float and dress up as silly or as sparkly as you like to truly wow the crowds!

Dave said: “This is the first carnival we’ve done in two years and I think people have got their confidence back when it comes to going out. The carnival is always a good thing for the town, it doesn’t matter what age you are!”

With carnival day on Saturday 8th October, the event is making a comeback this year after a two-year break due to Covid-19, and it promises to return with a bang.

Starting at 7.15pm from Newport Industrial Estate, the carnival will follow its usual route to arrive in the Town Square, featuring an abundance of carnival floats - from the weird and wonderful, sparkly and vibrant, to the noisy and silly, there will be something for everyone to marvel at this year.

T here are many traditions in Launceston that we all love and cherish, and Launceston Carnival is one of thembringing the community together on a Saturday night in October for lots of fun, entertainment and, of course, the famous carnival float parade.

"

The carnival is always a good thing for the town, it doesn’t matter what age you are!"

We’re back!

Launceston Carnival returns with a bang this autumn

As part of the carnival, celebrations will run in the week leading up to the event, including the best dressed window competition, scarecrow competition and carnival royalty crowing in the afternoon of the big day. On Friday 30th September, there will be a quiz in the town hall too!

12

Carnival night will see the Square filled with children’s rides, hot food and music to keep the masses well-fed and entertained. The parade will be led by this year’s carnival royalty, Carnival Queen Holly Cornish and Carnival Princesses Nora and Darcie Basford, followed by a huge range of floats occupied by local businesses and groups. With 16 categories to win prizes in, the committee encourages as many groups and people as possible to enter a float into the carnival parade - there is no limit to the number of floats that can enter! To bring the evening to a close, there will be a fantastic fireworks display over the valley which can be watched from the Castle grounds - free to attend!

“We’ve brought it back, made it a better carnival and always tried to do something different, hence this year’s fireworks display,” Dave said. “We just want people to come out and enjoy it - get a group of people together and get involved! It’s a community event with lots of noise and fun.”

While there has been a carnival locally since the 1800s, it was the current committee that started it back up again in 2010 after a long break in carnival events. Since then, there has been one cancellation due to stormy weather conditions, plus 2020 and 2021 thanks to Covid.

Dave continued: “I’m looking forward to it being a success; it’s always a lovely atmosphere in the town. It’s great to see people out and having a laugh.“If you’re interested in the carnival, please get involved! That’s what makes the carnival - seeing everyone having a laugh and the kids enjoying themselves!”

One of the main events of the carnival is the annual crowning of the carnival royalty, which will take place at 12pm in the Square on Saturday 8th October, ahead of the main event that evening. Holly, Nora and Darcie were chosen as the royalty at Coronation Park in June, during Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee celebrations, and the girls are very much looking forward to having their special day, leading the carnival parade through the town in all their finery - like real royalty!

T he 2022 Causley Festival brought residents, visitors, artists and performers to locations throughout Launceston for a weekend buzzing with workshops, interviews, poetry tours, musical performances, screenings and more.

Shining a spotlight on Lanson

Causley Festival of Arts & Literature Friday 29th July focused on celebrating literature and the influence of Charles Causley on the writers leading the day’s events. Launceston Town Hall hosted a keynote reading, a poetry tour and a presentation on the significance of place in Causley’s poetry. Elsewhere in the town centre, visitors explored the visual art being produced as part of Launceston’s fourth shop window exhibition, in addition to the town’s eclectic architecture showcased in Lawrence House Museum’s Pop-up Shop Exhibition. The second day of the festival featured both a Community Day held on the Launceston Castle Green, and a digital day of workshops and screenings held on Zoom. In conjunction with English Heritage and the Launceston Chamber of Commerce, the Castle hosted poetry picnics, storytelling sessions, musical performances, castle tours and a town walk from Launceston’s Town Crier, Rob Tremain. Elsewhere in the town were creative writing workshops led digitally by Vahni Anthony Capildeo and Katrina Naomi, alongside in-person readings from writers Annie Fisher and Frances Corkey Thompson. The evening concluded with a talk from writers Alyson Hallett and Angela France on the impact and influence of Causley’s work on their writings. The final day of the festival centred on discovering inner landscapes and the landscape of Launceston. Writers Cathy Galvin and Mary J Oliver both led workshops on engaging with the natural world as a springboard for reflection and writing, and the English Heritage team followed with a presentation about Launceston Castle’s history and its recent re-interpretation project. Paranormal investigator Karin Beasant and the Jamaica Inn paranormal team then hosted a walk of Launceston that explored some of its gruesome and ghostly history, alongside readings from Charles Causley’s poems. The day concluded in the historic ruins of the old Launceston Priory, which were open to visitors for a poetry picnic. If you are interested in the work of the Charles Causley Trust, would like some more information about Launceston's famous poet, or want to support the ongoing work of the Trust, visit www.causleytrust.org. The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall visit Launceston

Their Royal Highnesses were greeted by crowds of cheering people, with flags, cameras and umbrellas in-hand, as they arrived in Launceston to start day two of their royal tour of Devon and Cornwall on Tuesday, 19th July.

Arriving in the Square to music by Launceston Town Band and being greeted by local dignitaries, the Duke and Duchess began their visit to Launceston with a browse around the Royal Market in the Square, a delightful craft and produce market attended by local businesses offering everything from handmade clay pots and silver jewellery to sheep’s cheese, Cornish ice cream and local beer. After meeting the businesses of the market, Their Royal Highnesses continued their way around the Square, shaking the hands of people in the crowd, before being escorted onto the stage to watch a wonderful performance by the Lanson Dance, made up of local school children and choreographed by Gemma Kempthorne. very royal visit…

I

t didn’t just rain; it poured - but in true community spirit, a bit of typical Cornish weather didn’t put off locals as people flocked to Launceston Town Square to catch a glimpse of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall on a warm but rainy day in July.

18 www.launcestonlife.com

Mayor, Cllr Leighton Penhale, said: “When given the opportunity to be Mayor along with Gillian as Mayoress it was such an honour to represent our lovely town. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would greet the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall - the future king - to our town.

“Thanks to the school children, the council staff, councillors, the Town Band, stall holders and all who helped to make a most successful occasion.”

Deputy Mayor Helen Bailey had a wonderful time welcoming the Duke and Duchess to Launceston. She said: “It was lovely. Of course it was a shame about the weather, but that didn’t stop people from turning out to see them so it was really nice.

“It’s been an amazing morning which has been really positive for the town, and all the businesses have pulled out the stops to put on a great event.”

Cllr Rob Tremain, Town Crier, town councillor and local historian, added: “I was so proud to be able to accompany The Duchess of Cornwall on her visit to our wonderful town. Camilla wanted to meet with as many local people and children as she could. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly towards her. It showed how nice our town is. Since the 1300's the Dukes of Cornwall have been visiting their Capital and Lanson gave Charles a very friendly welcome on Tuesday.”

Before departing onto the next leg of their tour, Their Royal Highnesses unveiled a plaque to mark the visit, before being presented with flowers by local children Thomas and Daisy. As the buzz of Launceston’s royal visitors settled, the Royal Market continued and Launceston Life caught up with some of the businesses who had met the Duke and On-handDuchess. to show the Duke and Duchess all the wonderful arts and literature originating in Launceston was the Charles Causley Trust, who were keen to publicise their Festival of Arts & Literature which took place at the end of July. Nicola Nuttall, director of the Trust, said: “It was great! We had a good chat with the Duchess of Cornwall, who has an interest in literature and already owns the collective poems of Charles Causley. It was fabulous, and has really put Launceston on the map.” Ben McManigan Ceramics was delighted when the Duchess of Cornwall asked if she could have one of his beautiful clay pots: “I explained to them that my work is made with local clay in Polyphant, and then she asked if she could take home a bowl, and of course I said she could! She wanted one of the small copper ones. Prince Charles then came up and asked which one she had gone for. After I showed him, he said, ‘Oh yes, I thought she might!’ The bowl matched her dress. I’m pretty chuffed!” And local businesses weren’t the only ones to have such a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

On the other side of the museum are the exhibits that simply stand to be marvelled at. This side is home to the oldest exhibit in the museum: the Lawrence’s Bioscope Wagon, part of a structure which showed a moving picture show in the Victorian times. The Golden Gallopers are also on display here, hand-carved in Bristol with metal ears to hang onto, and each horse given their own name, which are painted on their necks. They were transported in a 4x4 lorry from 1917, which is also on display. Modern fairgrounds were born out of the Industrial Revolution, and though they might have changed over the years, you can still experience the joy of a traditional fairground when stepping into Dingles Fairground Museum. 25www.launcestonlife.com

Just a few miles across the border into West Devon, you will find Dingles Fairground Museum - a spectacle of antique and vintage fairground exhibits, taking visitors back in time to the ‘good ol’ days’.

Dingles Fairground Museum welcomes you

To book your tickets to Dingles Fairground Museum, and to discover more about the work of the museum and Fairground Heritage Trust, go to www.dinglesfhc.co.uk

A spectacular display of traditional rides and games from days gone by… Dingles is a not-for-profit organisation based in the rural countryside near Lifton, and is owned by the Fairground Heritage Trust. It features working exhibits dating as far back as the Victorian era and through to the mid 20th century. Featuring a ghost train built in 1947, the fabulous Chariot Racer from the 30s, the hilariously distorted ‘Crazy Mirrors’, Walter Shaw’s Moonrocket and the Gallopers, a hugely popular ride at the turn of the 20th century, these working exhibits can transport you back to a more colourful, vibrant and noisy time; a simpler time inclusive to everyone, young or old, rich or poor, to come out and enjoy the fair, treat themselves to a toffee apple and have a laugh with friends.

w hat an amazing run of lovely summer weather! However, the keen gardeners amongst you will know what a struggle it's been for our plants to grow this year.

Watering pots and vegetables has been a full time job, so with the climate changing it presents us with a challenge - it may be wise to look at more drought-tolerant plants for our gardens. Our English cottage style of planting may become a thing of the past, but it also means we can grow more tropical and Mediterranean plants.

Roses also cope amazingly well, they have very deep tap roots. Soon autumn will be around the corner, it can be a time to mourn the end of the summer but also a time to contemplate new projects and new ideas for your garden. It's also time to plan for the spring and to get your bulbs planted. Ahh, autumn. The air has become fresh, the countryside is starting to get its autumnal glow and the nights are beginning to draw in. As October half term approaches, we’ve put together a list of local businesses that will be able to offer some autumnal fun for all the family this season.

See what Lanson has in store for you this autumn…

If you love the idea of exploring a typical Cornish woodland, Willow Tree Cafe and Woodland Walk in North Petherwin may be the place for you. A haven for wildlife and nature, follow the delightfully peaceful walk around the woodland and see how the seasons have changed the landscape - from luscious green in the summer, to warm woody tones in the autumn. After your walk amongst nature, pop into the newly refurbished cafe for a warming drink and slice of homemade cake, or a spot of lunch!

Hedgehogs in particular often see piles of crunchy leaves, wood and other bits and pieces as the perfect opportunity to set up a cosy nest. That’s why it’s so important to triple check your bonfire set-up before you light it - bonfires around November 5th are a huge threat to hedgehogs.

Are you looking for a special gift for a loved one, or perhaps a treat for yourself, which has a low impact on the planet but is sure to be treasured for a long time?

Wild Gifts strives to showcase small batch artists and local businesses as well as award winning and environmentally conscious national brands.

I really notice when I haven’t been outdoor swimming. There is something special about it that you don’t get from a pool, and being out in nature really settles my mind. It’s certainly helped my sobriety. I’m reminded that for all my concerns, I’m just a tiny part of a huge world, and for a while at least, my worries are washed away.

Wild Swimming

I grew up by the coast, but it wasn’t until I was older that I realised how healing the ocean can be. I think swimming in the winter is sometimes easier; the water is colder, but we don’t have the warmth of the sun to lull us into a false sense of security. You might call us madmaybe you’d be right - but it works, and I’m not the only one who thinks so. If you were watching, you’d see us move together like a flock, stopping as the cold water hits our toes, squealing in shock but reassuring each other as it rises up our legs. I’m often on my tiptoes as I walk further out, but I carry on, until I can sink down and let the icy blanket of water envelope me. Once you’re in, it’s like nothing else in the world. The coldness takes our breath away, but breathe we must, so we swim to keep the blood flowing and ourselves warm, until the temperature is forgotten. Peacefulness overcomes us, and a stillness takes hold in our minds. Despite our differences, we’re all the same in the water. We’re at one with the waves, and the sound of that in itself is soothing. Despite knowing the benefits, we forced ourselves into the water, mindful that if we stay too long, especially in winter, hypothermia can set in, so one-by-one we depart. I’m often one of the last, ending up on jelly legs as I wander up the beach to warm up. The calm feeling stays though, and not just for a few minutes. The peace I gain from the water remains all day, flowing into my week.

Getting underway at the end of July, the Charles Causley Festival of Arts & Literature brought creatives from all over the country and beyond to Launceston for a special weekend of writing workshops, readings and talks, performance and art, as well as exploring the life and work of Launceston poet Charles Causley (1917-2003). This year the festival focused on bringing more physical events to the table, after the last couple of years had to be more digital-based due to Covid-19. With a lovely mix of both digital and in-person events this year, the festival offered something for everyone, whether they wanted to partake from home or in the town. See our festival round-up on page 15.

It has been amazing to see both the big and small events making a return to the scene this year, with plenty of music festivals, summer holiday activities and other events coming back bigger and better after a difficult couple of years. Here’s some of our highlights!

Well, what a summer it has been!

The Charles Causley Festival of Arts & Literature

Kickstarting the summer holidays, Launceston Agricultural Show returned to Kennards House for the first time in two years at the end of July. With plenty to see and do for all the family, the show is always a delight for the local farming community and this year included everything from children’s activities and fun shows, a community tent and a range of trade stalls, to the nitty gritty of the competitive animal showing. 39www.launcestonlife.com

Launceston’s round-up!summer

In July, Launceston was treated to a visit by the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall who were touring Devon and Cornwall to mark the 70th year as the Duke of Cornwall. Their Royal Highnesses arrived in the Square in the morning of 19th July, greeted by Mayor Leighton Penhale and other members of the town council, and were able to tour the royal market, featuring local businesses, before watching the Lanson Dance, performed by local school children. Read our full round-up of the royal visit on pages 17 and 18.

In addition to this, there are some fantastic local initiatives that are looking at boosting and improving the town - notably the Forest for Launceston project, which, with the community’s support, is looking at creating a wildlife haven in the town which will be accessible to local people and Therenature.isalso the Safer Greener Streets initiative, which is aiming to boost the town centre, increase footfall and create a safer place for people to shop following the effects of previous Meanwhile, lockdowns.

the Charles Causley Trust is putting Launceston on the map for arts and literature, taking on writers-in-residence, promoting literature, reading and writing across all ages, and bringing notable authors and other creatives to Lanson during the recent Causley Festival of Arts & Literature in the summer. There are so many wonderful things happening in our town and with continued kindness and a good old helping of community spirit, we should all feel very proud to live and work in this lovely part of Cornwall.

Community means kindness, coming together and celebrating all that is good about the people, projects and businesses that make up our wonderful corner of the world - from the historians preserving Lanson’s heritage for future generations and people volunteering their time to maintain green spaces, to the businesses ensuring locals can get what they need and organisations providing facilities for all ages to use and enjoy.

With so much being available in and around Launceston, supporting local businesses has never been so accessible. You can order bespoke fresh veg boxes from Veg in the Shed (Pennygillam Industrial Estate) or Westgate Street Deli; pick up delightful little gifts from Country Chic, The Byre or Wild Gifts; find your next outfit at Katie & Flora, Sazzyloo or Wroes; indulge in the local food and drink scene, support talented artists and so much more.

As we emerge from a very Covid-focused couple of years, now more than ever it is so important to remember that being a good citizen, supporting local businesses and looking after our town is vital to forming a great community.

Our Royal visitors were welcomed by huge crowds, enjoyed a wonderful local market and then sat back and watched the world premiere of the Dons Lanson, (The Launceston Dance). Local contemporary dance performer Gemma Kempthorne worked with local school children to choregraph the dance and the children were thrilled that their first performance was in front of Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.

Internationally renowned composer Simon Dobson was commissioned to write the music for the dance which was performed on the day by the Launceston Town Band. Before undertaking another walk through the crowd and departing the town, the Duke and Duchess unveiled a plaque commemorating the newly created People’s Herbarium by Karen Howse. As the rest of the country battled against the hottest day on record, in Launceston we ensured that no one was in danger of heat stroke, as the heavens opened and thunder roared and lightning lit up the gloomy skies. However, despite the weather, all that could be seen was huge beaming smiles from all those in attendance, including the Duke and Duchess themselves.

With the town’s historic links to the monarchy, it was an honour for the Town Council to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall to Launceston on Tuesday, 19th July. And as is always the way with this incredible town, you did yourselves proud.

To make an event like this happen involves a great deal of work by a great deal of people and the Town Council is extremely grateful to all the schools that took part, to Miss Ivy Events for staging the market, to all the market traders, the town band, stage and generator suppliers, Launceston In Bloom, Karen Howse, Simon Dobson and the Launceston Voluntary First Aid Service. I would also like to thank all of the Town Council staff who worked so hard in making sure this day was such a success. Many colleagues worked very long days and all the while keeping the event a secret.

As part of the council’s budget proposals, it was decided that we would no longer undertake the contracts to maintain the highways areas for surrounding parishes. This was so as to allow our grounds team the opportunity to spend all of their time working on the areas within the town, and ensuring that these were kept to the highest standards and that a cutting and maintenance regime could be undertaken that ensured the areas were attended to much more often and as required. As a part of this, we recruited a new member of staff to the grounds maintenance team, Jeff Hughes. Jeff joined us in May and has quickly established himself as a vital member of the council staff.

Blofeld, and with our FLIC film club showing all the latest cinema releases, there really is something for everyone.

On a personal level, I have shared some great memories in my time in Launceston, but to be standing shoulder to shoulder with local people, to whom this town means so much, and to be able to share in their pride, made the day the single best in my professional career.

Doomsdale

The old county gaol, known as ‘Doomsdale’, was the central point for housing Cornwall’s criminals until its demolition in 1842. It’s where ‘Quaker’ George Fox was imprisoned in 1654, who was amongst those that had to put up with very poor living conditions. There is an account of a time he and his fellow prisoners were given a candle and some straw by locals to mask the vile smell that lingered, only to be met with a viscous response from the jailer, who poured pots of excrement from the thieves above onto their heads, calling them ‘hatchet-faced dogs’. You can only imagine what prisoners would have experienced while wallowing in the grim cells of Doomsdale over the years. Even now, peering through the gated arch of the jail’s ruin, the cold, damp stone walls Dockacre House Dockacre House is thought to be one of Lanson’s most haunted sites. A Grade II listed building which has stood in place since the 16th century, it’s no wonder there are tales of ghosts. Scratching on walls, creepy figures standing in windows and pictures falling off walls are just some of the strange experiences people have recounted over the years. There is even a secret passage that supposedly leads from the cellar to either Launceston Castle or St Mary Magdalene Church, though it was cut off when Dockacre Road was built. We wonder what it was used for…

The famous Jamaica Inn, tucked away on Bodmin Moor on the outskirts of Launceston, is a pub filled with dark tales, accompanied by the sound of horses’ hooves on the cobbles outside, low whispers and ghostly footsteps at night. This Cornish pub may serve great grub and beer, and even featured in a Daphne Du Maurier novel, but it’s also a haven for ghostly activity - so much so that the pub now holds paranormal investigations there. Not only that, the British Paranormal Association has acknowledged that the inn is a genuine haunted establishment! 45www.launcestonlife.com

‘Nancy’s Garden’… Nancy, the daughter of a squire, wanted to marry William, who worked on the farm. William often approached Nancy’s father and would say: “Please, I’d love to marry your daughter.” Her father said ‘no’ every time. Eventually he said: “If you can give her a life with money and land, then you can marry her.” So, William decided to go to sea to make his fortune and Nancy said she would watch for him every day, from the top of the cliffs. While Nancy waited, she began to plant a garden. One night, William returned and from Nancy’s Garden, they followed a moon beam to William’s ship. But William’s ship was wrecked only days before and William lost at sea. …And if you go to this part of Cornwall, somewhere along the Fowey cliffs, you can still see Nancy’s Garden. Halloween can be traced back to the ancient Pagan festival, Samhain (pronounced Sah-win) which falls on 31st October. Launceston Life met with Kathy Wallis who, in 2021, was made a Bard of the Gorsedh Kernow for her contribution to Cornish culture, traditions and community. We asked Kathy to tell us her favourite spooky story and for a traditional spell that may have been regularly practised in Cornwall, and perhaps still is! Kathy said: “Well my favourite story is not necessarily just for Samhain, but it is about ghosts!”

Discover who you will marry with this traditional spell…

“Take an Allan apple Peel it in one continuous peel Throw it over your shoulder And it will give you the first initial of the person you’re going to marry! But if you take an Allan apple and put it under your pillow… You’ll dream about them!” 49www.launcestonlife.com

Before The Coffee Gets Cold is a heart-warming and magical story, and centres around a small speciality coffee shop tucked away in Tokyo. The coffee shop seems typical at first glance, but holds a special power - the customers can travel back in time. However, there are some strict rules when it comes to time travel. You must be seated in the one, specific chair and you must return to the present before your cup of coffee gets cold. We meet four customers and go on a journey through time. Without revealing too much, these customers and their personal stories are what make the book so warming and cosy. I think it is the perfect autumn book - a good read to curl up with a hot mug of tea or hot chocolate. Toshikazu Kawaguchi is a Japanese writer, born in Osaka. Before the Coffee Gets Cold was originally a play, before it became so popular that he adapted it into a short novel. For more book recommendations and reviews, please check out my Instagram @hallereads where I post regularly!

We know it’s the project that is in the back of everyone’s minds, as such a space would be so beneficial to the community. We are pleased to share an update from the Forest for Launceston, which is aiming to provide Launceston with a community space to boost biodiversity, enhance social connections and allow everyone to thrive in nature.

LOCAL NEWS << 63www.launcestonlife.com

It’s been a long time in the making, but we are delighted to hear the Forest For Launceston is progressing well and the team are in the final stages of agreeing the lease with Cornwall Council. It will be no secret that Cornwall Council have had significant cuts over the last year, which has affected staffing levels, and as such has meant that the transfer of ownership to the community (via a 99-year lease) has run a year overdue. The Forest for Launceston team have been attending monthly meetings with Cornwall Council and other involved parties, if it was not for their dedication and commitment to the project for the community we would still be some time away! They are also delighted to say that with the permission of Cornwall Council they have recently run a community building day with Resonance, a local social enterprising organisation with the project’s lead Sam Virgo-Brown. They spent the day litter picking, clearing paths, collecting pine cones for St Catherine’s school and generally enjoying the lovely space. The next phase will be to clear a significant amount of disused fencing and the team are looking for volunteers to help. If that could be you, email ellie@life-media.co.uk and we can pass it onto the team. And finally, once the lease has been agreed the Forest for Launceston team will be holding a community event in the Town Hall for everyone to come together and discuss what facilities and resources the site might need, and the vision for its long term use by the community. In recent months, around 70 Ukrainian families fleeing the war in their home country have settled with local sponsors in the Launceston area.

As the conflict in Ukraine shows no sign of resolution at the time of writing, there are more host sponsors waiting for Ukrainian families to join them here – some already matched, others yet to be connected but available to help.

Leaving behind lives, livelihoods, and loves, the needs of the people settling here with local families are understandably complex. Forced to flee with only what they could carry, their experiences often traumatic, many arrived keen to establish links to our welcoming community, to learn better English, and to broaden their opportunities for employment.

Paula has embraced her artistic talent after retiring a few years ago. She said: “I’ve been painting since I was a little girl, but when I retired I thought I would go about it in a big way. I soon came to realise that I would need a shop, so now I’m in Launceston!”

With this in mind, North Cornwall Ukraine Community Group hosted an event to help Ukrainian guests settle into life here on Tuesday 26th July. ‘Adapt to Life in Lanson’ sought to connect guests and sponsors with useful contacts and organisations in the community, and to understand their experiences after relocation to North Cornwall.

To join or support them, go to North Cornwall Ukraine Community Group on Facebook.

You can visit Paula’s shop between 10.30am-2.30pm in the Market House Arcade.

If you venture into 5 Market House Arcade in Launceston, you will be in awe of Paula’s vibrant, nature-inspired pieces of work that line the walls of the shop. As well as original works, there are prints and greetings cards available to purchase.

Wildflowers, bees and the Cornish countryside all blended into beautiful pieces of artworkthat is the vision of local artist Paula May, who has recently opened her own little shop in the Market House Arcade.

As well as selling her own art, Paula is encouraging people to have a go themselves, offering art classes for beginners in a relaxed environment to paint and sketch what they love.

Paula takes inspiration from the rural landscapes at home in North Hill, wandering about the country lanes and noticing the variation of wildflowers that reside there.

Do you have a little spare time to volunteer? Would you like to do something worthwhile that helps your community? Are you keen to do something rewarding that will help benefit the next generation? Do you have a desire to contribute to our children’s education and ensure they get a good start in life? Are you over the age of 18 years and would you like to be part of a team that supports a school to achieve this? Do you have a wider interest in education or a specific role that would benefit from your experience as a governor?

Support in communityourfor wellbeing and mental health 67

If you are feeling isolated or concerned about your mental health, then perhaps consider joining a social group or reaching out to one of the mental health support groups that meet regularly in and around TheseLaunceston.include groups such as, running and cycling clubs, art groups, cuppa companions, Man Down, menopause café, just to name a few. Further details can be found on our Wosson pages which may contain a group that could support your wellbeing.

We are looking for people who are selfmotivated, enthusiastic and objective with an enquiring mind. You may bring life skills or skills you have gained through work. No need for expertise in education but you will be willing to learn as training is provided, and you may learn new skills that will help you in your work life. You will also be willing to listen and work as a team.

According to an article by the World Health Organisation, ‘In the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, global prevalence of anxiety and depression increased by a massive 25%’. The article continues to highlight the role of ‘social isolation’ in causing this rise and that, ‘Linked to this were constraints on people’s ability to work, seek support from loved ones and engage in their communities.’ Work and finances can put us under a lot of strain. If you are feeling the pressure of rising costs, then Community Money Advice offers a support scheme and their office is open Tuesday afternoons and Friday mornings at the Gateway Centre. For more information, call 01566 777407.

An Daras Trust is comprised of 8 primary schools based around North Petherwin, Werrington, St Stephens by Launceston, 2 in Launceston town, Coads Green, Lew Trenchard and Princetown. We are looking for people, retired or working, in these communities to consider being a governor. The Trust also occasionally recruits new Trustees and Members (the latter requiring a very minimal time commitment)

There could also be a number of initiatives to create a better social environment for residents and visitors, including places to stop and read, comfortable seating outside businesses and reduction in traffic.

Now you are being given the chance to have your say and find out more about the plans to make Launceston a greener place. Do you think more planting and rewilding opportunities should be welcomed to the town? Would you like to see additional green spaces created in the community? How do you feel about pedestrianpriority in certain areas?

The latest information is available to view on the Launceston Town Council

The project is also exploring the concept of giving pedestrians priority and making it safer to walk and cycle around the town.

Amongst the ideas are plans to introduce more green spaces to Launceston, and to utilise pockets of space across the town, to create new planting areas, seating and multi-use spaces for activities and events.

Launceston Town Centre could see more integrated seating introduced, plus trees and planting to provide shade and flood resilience.

The plans will explore how the introduction of more inclusive spaces for all ages and abilities, community projects, planting opportunities and integration of local heritage and culture could benefit the town, as well as linking Launceston’s public spaces.

Launceston’s Safer Greener Streets project, which has attracted nearly £100,000 of feasibility funding from Cornwall Council’s Town Vitality Fund and works alongside the Town Plan Group, is asking the community to contribute their thoughts on whether Launceston would benefit from green spaces which have recently been proposed for the town.

September brings with it the Autumn equinox. Equinox translated means equal night. From this time onwards, the nights become longer than our days, and the darkness of winter is approaching. For some people, this occurrence brings a sinking heart or even dread. If this is you, then it's time to put some loving self-care practices into your life, to support yourself during the coming months. Mindful movement can be a huge support for your emotional well-being. Practices like yoga and the Alexander Technique help to create a healthy mind and body relationship. They also teach you to change unhelpful mental and physical habits, including patterns of tension. Building good habits whilst you're feeling good is the key, so before it gets too dark and miserable to tempt you outside, go for a walk regularly, ideally somewhere that lifts your heart. We're so lucky in Lanson, with our castle grounds and all the countryside you could ever need nearby. Regularly noticing and stating what you can be grateful for is an excellent practice to keep the mind from obsessing over the negative things in life. With a bit of practice and personal commitment, your mental and physical self can help you through this time… "know thy self, heal thy self". Autumn fire safety

Bonfire/Fireworks Night

The easiest way to protect you home and family from fire is with a working smoke alarm. Ensure you have at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home and place it on the ceiling, in the middle of a room, or on the hallway/landing. Never disconnect or take the batteries out of your alarm if it goes off by mistake. Chimney Sweeping People should get their chimney swept twice a year when burning wood or house coal and at least once a year when burning smokeless fuels.

Smoke Detection

Keeping safe with Cornwall Fire & Rescue Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service are offering help and advice to people so that they stay safer in their homes. People should avoid having bonfires and fireworks at home. However, if you wish to have them at home then please follow the easy-to-remember steps guide: B – Build your bonfire in a safe place O – Observers are to be kept at a safe distance N – Notify Fire Control on 02031622240 if you are having a bonfire F – Fuels and other accelerates to never be used on a fire I – Always have a hose or bucket of water ready R – Never return to a firework when it has been lit E – Extinguish, ensure the fire is fully out before you leave it unattended www.launcestonlife.com

Simply layer your mixture up inside Then take a circle of plastic bag and fabric/wrapping paper 5cm bigger than the jar top and secure over the top with an elastic band. Top using the string and faux foliage as above. Don’t forget to write the recipe on the label – you could even tie a cutter around the top.
