So we reach the end of another year, and what a year it has been!

Here at Launceston Life we have seen such positivity within our local community. It has been an extremely difficult couple of years with the dreaded Covid hanging over us, but this hasn’t stopped the businesses of Launceston. Traders have come back stronger than ever and this issue of Launceston Life reflects that. This is our biggest magazine yet, so keep going Launceston, you are doing a grand job! Helping those in need Launceston Refugee Support Group

A

group of like minded people started Launceston Refugee Support Group in 2017, as a response to the growing refugee crisis in Europe, with initial meetings developing the group further, leading to being awarded charity status in 2018. (Charity No.1178812).

LRSG learned a lot from their sister group, Bude Refugee Support Group, who had been up and running a year earlier, and the refugee support officers at Cornwall Council. Training sessions and awareness sessions were organised, and the group formalised a bid to become a Community Sponsorship Group, in partnership with Cornwall Council.

The group has identified their main aims over time - relieving financial hardship for those seeking refuge from conflict in the Middle East and North Africa region, and those granted refugee status and their dependants living in Cornwall and Launceston in particular. This has been supported by various fundraising events, Saturday markets in the town square and collection tins.

After achieving charity status, LRSG embarked on the road towards welcoming a refugee family to Launceston, formalising a bid to become a Community Sponsorship Group, in partnership with Cornwall Council. Following the rules set out by the government in the Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme, they welcomed a family of Syrian refugees to town in May 2019.

LRSG’s group of volunteers moved into action and the family moved into a rented house in town.

The family has grown, with a baby being born in November 2019.

Both parents are now in part time work, and the other children attend local schools..

Of course, the pandemic has curtailed the group’s activities and that of the family, but they are now beginning to establish their public activities again, as well as supporting the family to establish themselves in the community.

Health for Homeless Pop up clinic comes to Launceston

Winter has arrived now in Launceston with its shorter, gloomy days which are brightened with afinansow Nadelik (Christmas decorations) appearing in the Square, and in shops and houses. Gwydh Nadelik (Christmas trees) are a big part of everyone’s Christmas and the spectacular Christmas tree exhibition in St Mary’s church is back this year.

Another tradition of this time of year and an important part of Cornwall’s heritage is karolyow Nadelik (Christmas carols) and many villages in Cornwall have their own carols. These carols have humble origins in the pubs and chapels of mining, fishing and farming communities but they are complex and make use of the wide range of voices available.

Unfortunately, these have been displaced by the nationally known ones but many of the local carols have been collected and they are still performed.

In the late nineteenth century, about a quarter of a million Cornish people emigrated to Australia, New Zealand, the Americas and South Africa. They took their traditions with them including Cornish carols which are still used there.

The first Festival of Nine Lesson and Carols was held in Truro Cathedral on Christmas Eve 1880 when the Bishop of Truro, the Right Reverend Edward White Benson wanted to provide an alternative to the pub for celebrating the festive season. The Nine Lessons service became more popular across the whole country after Bishop Benson became Archbishop of Canterbury in 1883.

Carol services in the Cornish language are held across Cornwall around Christmas.

A multi-agency pop-up clinic for homeless people will be coming to Launceston on Monday, 17th January at the Gateway Centre, PL15 9TR, between 10am and 4.30pm.

This clinic is open for those who are homeless, with Cornwall Housing on hand to offer support.

The clinic will offer a multitude of services, including minibus collections; Covid and flu vaccinations, dental health kits and lateral flow tests; liver scanning, sexual health and dental care; NHS health checks from Healthy Cornwall; £5 Tesco voucher; hair and nails service.

Refreshments will also be made available.

This is a free clinic, with a focus on making the environment as safe and approachable as possible.

Taking a wire wreath ring, tie on either mossing wire or string. Place some moss onto the top of the frame and bind on around the ring, pulling the wire tight.

Cut your foliage down to approximately 6” in length. Good foliage are evergreens such as holly, ivy, spruce, conifer and bay. Using different textures and shades of green makes the wreath interesting.

Select pieces of foliage and begin to lay it onto the moss ring, mixing the different varieties up as you go. Bind on with the wire or string. Work anticlockwise around the ring.

Now it’s time to add your decorations traditional cinnamon, dried orange slices, cones, feathers, baubles, and ribbon. Using a stronger wire gauge, feed a wire through or around the decorations so you have a long length left to push through the moss base.

Hook the end of the wire around the base of the ring to secure in place.

Join Launceston U3A Explore interests, hobbies and skills with new friends

3 A is a UK wide, cooperative movement of people no longer in full time work who come together to continue their educational, social and creative interests in a friendly and informal environment.

A Launceston relies on the locals 16

s Lanson continues to expand its list of modern shops, business owner Sarah Bradley has told Launceston Life why shopping locally is so important, and with Christmas on its way, why wouldn’t you buy from the amazing range of local businesses?

Owner of beautiful interiors and gift shop The Byre, located on Broad Street, Sarah has seen Launceston consistently develop since relocating to this central shop space two and a half years ago.

But Sarah explained that it’s down to the people of Launceston to use the shops, cafes, delis and markets, to make sure the town centre is able to thrive for years to come.

“Launceston relies on the locals,” she told Life. “We’re still here being supported by the locals, which is great. This summer, I did notice that there were more visitors than previous years, but on the whole it’s locals that keep me going.”

Using small independent shops often provides a more personal experience to customers. “I always wanted a shop where people could come and enjoy the whole shop,” Sarah continued. “I want to make sure that it’s a calm environment where people can take their time to browse, and even just have a chat!”

With the difficulty posed to many businesses during the lockdowns over the past couple of years, Sarah was still supported throughout this challenging period by offering home deliveries in and around Launceston, being able to make sales despite having to close her shop for a long time.

“When we came out of lockdown, I think people appreciated coming into the shops after being away from them for so long,” Sarah said. “People need to keep realising that the little local shops are what keeps the town going, so make sure you’re visiting them as much as you can.”

This goal shouldn’t be too hard to achieve with the amazing community spirit Launceston has, but Sarah thinks that people need to adjust their mindsets towards shopping locally, to ensure independent businesses are able to be here for years to come.

She said: “There’s a really nice community in Launceston, and people from other areas are discovering our town a bit more.

People need to make a conscious choice to shop local, they have to make the effort. Perhaps that means making a little plan of what you need to buy, then you can set out and find whatever you need in the shops.”

It’s clear that the independent businesses in Launceston support one another too. In fact, while Sarah chatted away to Life, Jade Harvey from Let’s Get Naked Refill popped in to grab a couple of bits, and stopped for a chat too! It’s fantastic to see a friendly community of businesses supporting each other, despite the challenges they’ve all had to face because of Covid-19 and Brexit.

“I think it’s really important that people open their eyes to what’s going on in the town,” Sarah added. “There’s always so much going on in the town centre, and there’s a real core team of people pushing things for the town. People need to give back to the community and support it!”

The Byre will be open throughout the festive season, and will also be open during the town’s late night shopping nights on the 10th and 17th December.

Getting the right support Group provides support to young families in Launceston

Becoming a parent for the first time can be an overwhelming experience. Pairing this with becoming a mother or a father at a young age brings its own challenges.

Established in 1992 by a group of young parents and having reached 14,000 people, WILD Young Parents Project runs a group session each week in Launceston, aiming to provide support to local young families under the age of 20: and up to the age of 23 in some cases. The sessions take place at the Orchard Centre on a Tuesday morning, and from January will take place at the family hub by the leisure centre on a Wednesday morning.

WILD aims to give young parents and their babies the opportunity to thrive and help them have the best possible start to family life, providing a range of fun activities for parents and their babies or toddlers such as music, art, outdoor adventure, as well as offering support for the health of parents, and information on creating a safe and happy environment at home.

In Launceston, young mums and their children, pregnant young women and young dads can make new friends, have fun and get help and advice.

If I’m Honest Ed Byrne heads to Launceston in February

A

ousehold name h teetering on the brink of national treasure status, award-winning comedian Ed Byrne is heading to Launceston Town Hall in February with his new show If I’m Honest.

Having recently hit a new peak with shows such as the sublime Spoiler Alert and reflective Outside, Looking In, which explored the minefield that is modern parenting and a generational sense of entitlement, Ed’s new show If I’m Honest digs ever deeper into a father’s sense of responsibility, what it means to be a man in 2019, and whether he possesses any qualities whatsoever worth passing on to his two sons.

As ever, Ed manages to provoke without being overly polemical, a balancing act that only someone of his huge experience can really pull off.

If I’m Honest brilliantly elucidates the frustration that arrives in middle age – and lives up to its title. “I’m bored looking for things, I’m bored of trying to find stuff, because I can never find it, and it is entirely my fault,” Ed says. “Nobody’s hiding my stuff from me. Although my wife did actually move my passport on one occasion.”

Since the pandemic hit and live comedy as we know it temporarily ceased to be, Ed has done a few sociallydistanced gigs as well as some on Zoom and he cannot wait to get back on the road properly. It will have been 18 months since he last performed a tour date: “I’ll have to see what still works and what doesn’t. I’ve missed doing stand-up the most during this lockdown. No-one told me ‘you’re not going to be touring for 18 months’ or I would have planned it better.”

Silent Night A Winter Story BY Cathryn Northfield

In the autumn, we put out a request for local creative writers to come up with a winter short story set in Launceston, for us to publish in our winter magazine.

Well here’s our favourite! This heartwarming story comes from Cathryn Northfield, 38.

O

tside, the snow fell like confetti, its feather-like crystals melting upon the u crowds of Christmas shoppers who’d gathered to admire the town awash with lights and festivities.

Eighty years old, Eric was Lanson born and bred; the map of wrinkles upon his face could tell many a story, most including his beloved wife June, who’d sadly passed away in the summer. Eric’s heart ached as he thought about the love of his life and how much she adored this time of year.

They’d always been a sociable couple, but grief has a way of removing you from the world, and Eric found he’d been avoiding people lately and spent most days at June’s bench.

‘Are you going to Midnight Mass?’ Lizzie asked Eric as he shuffled uncomfortably, sliding his coat to cover his bag containing a turkey dinner for one. ‘Not this year.’ he replied with sadness in his eyes.

Lizzie gave an understanding nod as she refilled his tea.

Eric wrapped his hands tightly around the mug, enjoying the warmth; he took small sips hoping to delay heading home. Energy prices had soared this year, and it’d become unaffordable to put the heating on.

As the last of the customers left the café full of Christmas cheer, Eric gathered his belongings and headed out into the night. The snow crunched underfoot, and his breath rose in visible puffs; Eric paused as he reached the town square and listened to the sweet melodic sound of the choir. Silent Night, that was June’s favourite, he thought.

Once home Eric gathered some extra blankets and settled down for the night.

The sound of knocking awoke Eric from his slumber; realising it was morning, he made his way to the door.

Thereupon his doorstep stood Lizzie in amongst a sea of smiling faces.

‘Merry Christmas!’ They all chorused.

‘Please join us in the café today. I’ve made a Christmas pudding with June’s recipe.’ Lizzie beamed.

A lump formed in Eric’s throat as he realised he didn’t want to be alone after all. Christmas with the community is exactly what June would’ve loved. www.launcestonlife.com

New clinic open SW Podiatry & HEALTH Clinic

SW Podiatry Clinic has recently been given the opportunity by Homeleigh Garden Centre to have a purpose built clinic made, now boasting a front door, reception and three clinical rooms.

Two of the clinics will be for podiatrists Shelly and Wendy, while Rachel from RTW Ear Care Solutions will be sharing Wendy’s clinic and the third room will be for sports therapists Hannah and Paul from The Sports Therapy & Massage Clinic.

Shelly and Wendy are highly qualified with BSc (Hons) degree in Podiatric medicine, both holding their prescription only medicine and local anaesthetic license. They are registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) and members of the Royal College of Podiatry.

The latest news FROM LAUNCESTON TOWN COUNCIL

In the 2019 winter edition of this publication, I wrote that it was hard to believe that it was ‘that time of year’ once again, but after Christmas 2020, I am sure many of us are looking forward to be able to enjoy something slightly more traditional this year and welcome the opportunity to spend time with family and friends properly. It will also allow us to give even greater support and assistance to those that find this time of year particularly demanding.

I do hope that you enjoyed the Christmas light switch on event this year. We aim to make every year bigger and better than the last and as we have done on so many town projects, we have worked closely with the Chamber of Commerce to ensure that the town looks its best and that we have a display that we can all be proud of. I was really pleased that we were able to invite the winner of the Mayor’s Christmas card competition, Lydia Gardener, to switch on the town Christmas lights. We received so

many fantastic competition entries, but seven-yearold Lydia’s was judged to be the best and it even made an old Scrooge of a Town Clerk smile!

I must take this opportunity to thank all the organisations that provided such fantastic entertainment and to the volunteers who helped on the night and gave up their time and worked so hard to make sure the event went ahead. They can all now take a break until April when we will begin planning the 2022 event!

On the subject of thanking others, the Town Council sends huge thanks to the Royal British Legion for all of their time, effort and support in staging the town’s Remembrance Service. The event provided a wonderful opportunity to show the town’s respect and gratitude to those who made such sacrifice. This year we were able to mark the day and pay our respects in person and as a town, we did not disappoint.

a space with veterans, businesses, charitable organisations, schools and youth groups, is humbling. The Town Council is proud to be a part of such a significant day and on a personal level, I am honoured to take my place in the parade amongst such esteemed company.

The new library project is continuing and following the public consultation process, I hope that by the time this edition of Launceston Life lands through your letterbox, that the planning application for the new building is processing and that work will be able to start in the New Year.

Whilst the new library hub is excellent for the town and an exciting prospect for 2022, town councillors will also be working hard to ensure that leisure provision for the town is maintained.

Following the public meeting in the Town Hall in November, the Town Council has worked with the Cornwall Council local divisional members, to press the importance of such a facility for a town like ours and look at all possibilities for how leisure facilities can be continued.

The Town Hall venues continue to bring a wide range of events and entertainment to the town, and the new year is looking as exceptional as ever. The year starts with Johnny Cowling and The Countrymen celebrating Cornwall and all things Cornish, we then have the Dolly Parton and Friends Tribute Show, The Beatones, Clive Anderson, Abba and Blondie tribute night, Kerry Godliman, Omid Djalili, The Crime and Comedy Theatre Company production of Revenge “A taut thriller full of twists and turns!”, Gyles Brandreth and Rich Hall.

Winter Motoring Tips Prepare your car for cold, icy weather

ere’s a frost in the air - and that means possibilities of icy roads, super cold weather h and dark driving conditions. Using advice published by the AA, Launceston Life has put together some top tips on how to look after your car, yourself and your passengers this winter, when breakdowns and accidents are more common.

Did you know you could receive a fine if you leave dirt and snow on your windows?

Make sure you keep the windscreen and other windows clear, and get rid of any snow on the roof to stop it falling and blocking your view while driving.

The AA recommends at least 3mm of tread on your tyres for winter.

With shorter days and a higher chance of rain, sleet and snow, visibility can often be poor while driving, so make sure your car lights are clean, clear of snow and ice, and are working properly before setting off. Headlights can be used when visibility is severely reduced and if using fog lights, make sure you switch them off when visibility improves to avoid dazzling other drivers.

L eave plenty of room between cars when driving, and if you need to brake, apply them gently.

Before you set off, make sure you’ve allowed extra time for journeys as there is more chance that you will encounter slight delays due to snow or ice, and give yourself at least ten minutes to de-ice your car - all windows and mirrors should be clear when you set off.

Support your local animal shelter this winter

unceston & District Cats Protection has been a running over 30 years, rehoming more than 100 cats and kittens per year.

All cats are examined by a vet and neutered, microchipped and vaccinated before the team finds them loving new homes.

The branch helps numerous feral cats in its Trap, Neuter and Return scheme (TNR). Feral kittens, if young enough, can often become lovely pets.

They offer assistance with neutering costs, through a voucher scheme, for people on low incomes or benefits, for £5 per cat at one of the participating vets.

There are many ways that you can help the branch to continue their work, including becoming a branch member, making donations, volunteering, making a bequest in your will, rehoming, sponsoring and much more.

Keep active this winter with Physical Postcards

A

initiative to encourage gentle n regular activity within the home returns this year with a 12-week programme, commissioned by Public Health Cornwall.

Dance Centred is running its 12-week Physical Postcards programme for the third time in a row this winter, encouraging everyone to practice gentle exercise each week to keep themselves mobile and active this winter.

Dance Centred works with social prescribers to see how the arts can benefit people living with health problems or social issues. With these networks on board, the arts charity has been able to launch its third round of Physical Postcards in Cornwall, supported and commissioned by Public Health Cornwall.

Lisa Townsend from Dance Centred said: “A lot of people have been missing out on information during the pandemic. This project benefits people that are not digitally connected, or just don’t want to get on Zoom. It’s a 12-week programme to keep people active and moving, with the first card sent out to people in January.” www.launcestonlife.com

The average age of participants tends to be 60+, although there isn’t an age limit or boxes to tick to qualify.

Lisa said: “The postcards are designed to be motivational, and we find that after the first couple of cards, people start trying them and end up feeling very ‘can do’ about life in general. People in care homes chat to each other about it, and feel more confident in their body.

“We’ve learnt how valuable these exercises are for people in every day life - an exercise might be done while they put the shopping away, or make a cup of tea for themselves. It’s all dance-inspired - the postcards have been developed from community based dance projects working with a very diverse range of people. They’re often those members of the community who are most vulnerable, and can’t or don’t access digital platforms.”

r afting and tuning into our suppressed artistic talents, while being able to socialise with friends or make new ones, is a fantastic way to get the old brain cogs going while winding down after a long day.

Jeanette Neale at Red Cow hopes to give more people that opportunity with a number of regular crafting workshops in her cosy studio on Madford Lane, Launceston.

The ground floor of the three-storey historic Lanson building is where most of the crafting takes place, around Jeanette’s huge farmhouse-style table so there is plenty of space to grab supplies and make a bit of a mess.

Holding approximately one or two craft evenings each week and with three floors for activities, Red Cow is the perfect place to go if you fancy a night out with a difference - all events are bespoke to what the party wants. Launceston Folk Dance Club to celebrate centenary

D

e to Covid-19, Launceston u Folk Dance Club was unable to celebrate its centenary in 2020, but it’s all steam ahead for 2022, Covid permitting!

In 1912 Cecil Sharp, the doyen of folk dancing, visited Launceston while touring the country, collecting folk songs and dances, knowing they may disappear in future years if not written down. While in Launceston, he became friendly with two headmistresses of local schools one of which was Pendruccombe School and it’s believed the other was St Stephens. These ladies learnt to dance and in 1920, when men had returned from the First World War, were encouraged to start a folk dance club in Launceston.

With dances being held weekly in surrounding villages and further afield there was a real social life and probably many a romance started!

the club finally restarted but soon closed again as the organisers felt they were too old. However, it was when Ron and Beatrice Bright moved to the area that the club came to life again in the 60’s, taking young people to the Albert Hall for competitions, using the club’s own costumes.

Ron and Beatrice left a legacy in the town with many school children being encouraged to dance ably assisted

by Anna and Jim Reade and others at various times. The club meets every Tuesday and plans to restart as soon as Covid allows.

With plenty of laughter and fun exercise, it is an evening well spent where friends are made and a social life can grow. The folk dance world is a friendly world and can be a busy one with dances continuing to be held by other clubs. Launceston Club also holds dances twice a year in the Town Hall where there is a live band and Caller for the evening and the club hopes to hold its first dance in April 2022.

Working for the community An update from Launceston Community Development Trust

FOREST FOR LAUNCESTON The Forest for Launceston is LCDT’s newest initiative – looking to bring an underused area of woodland back into the ownership of the community. Already they have seen a great level of support from local people who helped raise over £6,000 in early 2021. Following on from this the LCDT and Forest for Launceston teams have been working together to secure the land and make progress with the visioning for how they can rejuvenate the site.

Soon the Trust will begin active engagement with the community for the project - scoping out events and opportunities for tree planting and community engagement starting from Feb/March time.

PROUTS CORNER AFFORDABLE HOUSING Launceston CDT have recognised the growing need for affordable properties in the community for people with local connection.

The Trust’s first scheme to begin development was the ambition to develop 28 affordable homes to action against this need. Although the scheme has progressed slowly over the last 18 months, the planning application for the scheme has been submitted on a site near the town centre. As they wait for the decision, the Trust are continuing to engage the community and grow the list of those within the community that are in need of a property and have expressed their interest.

ACTIVE LAUNCESTON Launceston holds a range of active facilities and clubs within the community – yet face-to-face conversations with local people highlighted how some of the facilities needed were under-served. What started as a research piece to better understand the current levels of activity within Launceston, soon became an ambition to create a collaboration amongst local stakeholders and bring about the benefits of activity.

Members of the community have begun to share more information about how they would like to see elements developed, all of which is going on simultaneously to new discussions regarding the local leisure centre facilities within Launceston. This has expanded the Trust’s aspirational focus even further – looking to bring the facilities into the ownership of the community itself. www.launcestonlife.com

Helping Launceston get home safely Meet our local Street & Prayer Pastors

After a challenging time for all, Launceston’s dedicated Street Pastors team together with the Prayer Pastors at their base at the Orchard Centre, are back on the streets in the town centre, working to provide a safe and caring presence in the community’s night-time economy.

Partnering with CCTV, door staff and emergency services, Launceston Street Pastors, which began in 2013, keep people safe on the streets, whether they are on a night out or in other situations where they may require help.

In teams of three, they walk around the town and respond to many different situations, always willing to lend a listening ear to anyone who may need support and also regularly give out items that those on a night out may find helpful, such as flip-flops, water bottles and blankets.

The Street Pastor team is currently made up of 13 Street Pastors and six Prayer Pastors, but are keen to recruit new volunteers over 18 who are considerate, caring, trustworthy, can stay calm and work well in a team.

There for you Mental health problems are an increasing concern here in Cornwall and with long waiting lists, plus the expense of seeing counsellors, many people are faced with a barrier when it comes to asking for help.

SILC aims to provide 700 hours of free counselling to people aged 15+ in the Launceston area - a fantastic step forward for supporting people in our community who may be struggling.

As part of this new service, Step into Learning has employed a counselling coordinator and two counselling supervisors to ensure that both counsellors and clients are safeguarded. As part of a counsellor’s four years of training, they are required to complete 100 hours of clinical

practice, which is why the 700 hours of free counselling sessions have been made available through SILC in a new counselling room with privacy and confidentiality playing an important part of the layout of this space.

The initiative has also been supported by Launceston Town Council, with Mayor Leighton Penhale cutting the ribbon to officially launch SILC at an opening event in October.

English Spirit was born in 2011 and since then has grown with sites in Cambridgeshire, Essex and Cornwall. In October 2021 the beautiful English Spirit Distillery opened at Treguddick Manor, Launceston, offering tasting tours for their wide range of spirits and liqueurs, from glorious gins to the original British rum.

English Spirit has been welcoming visitors through their doors since their grand opening in the autumn, and is now looking forward to providing an enjoyable experience this Christmas, with tours and tastings continuing throughout the festive season.

Start your visit with one of the tours - the general tour is available seven days a week and gives visitors the chance to learn about every aspect of production, along with some tastings of their spirits. ‘Tis The Season to Get Crafting!

ristmas can be a busy time and stressful with everyone rushing around and h shopping ‘til they drop. One of the nicest things that we can do is to take some time out and get crafting, writes Jeanette Neale from Red Cow. After being visited by the Launceston Life team I was keen to think about a simple project that could be made with things we all have at home or can easily obtain. This little framed picture is perfect for a personalised gift and can be posted if we can’t travel to our friends and family.

YOU WILL NEED

INSTRUCTIONS

�S mall frame or cardboard frame approximately 15cm by 10cm (6” x4”) with backing card to match. �P iece of fabric or wrapping paper about 20cm by 15cm �R ange of wrapping paper, tissue scraps, music paper, handwriting of messages that you have written. �C ardboard or wooden cut-out stocking �S mall embellishments from Christmas decoration – foliage, bells, faux berries � Ribbon �G lue - PVA, Modge podge or Annie Sloane Image medium are all perfect.

Glue gun or uhu type glue.

Start by taking your plastic frame front or a piece of cardboard cut to the same size. Cover with your largest piece of wrapping paper or fabric. Stretch tight and glue in place using the PVA or UHU.

Take your stocking paint white or leave natural – it’s up to you. Apply glue to the stocking and put your images on the top. Go over the top of the papers with the PVA, Modge Podge or Image.

Carefully glue your stocking into place on the backing card.

Using the UHU or Glue gun take your embellishments. Little Christmas decorations are perfect for this. Glue them on.

Put your picture in the frame and ta-da, you are done!

Eco Christmas How can we change for the better?

Mindfulness

With Gemma from Embodied Mindfulness

For most of us, the beginning of winter is busy with preparations for Christmas and New Year, getting caught up in the pressures of buying gifts, enormous amounts of food and preparing for the influx of loved ones.

After the ‘letting go’ of autumn, nature has withdrawn back inwards, to rest and recuperate in preparation for the spring. In the madness of December it’s easy to forget that we’re part of nature too. All the planning, all the thinking takes our minds into the future and when that happens, we lose the ability to think clearly.

You can use body awareness to bring yourself back into the present moment. Start by noticing your feet resting on the ground, take a couple of breaths. Firstly, breathing out, then let the new air come rushing back in; imagine that it’s filling your whole back. Relax the frown from your face and unclench your jaw. Use these simple directed thoughts to put a mindful pause in your list driven day.

Whilst we probably can’t abolish the seemingly endless to-do list, we can choose how we respond to the pressures that it brings. Coming back into the present moment can help keep things in perspective.

The library has started reintroducing weekly activities; with storytime for the under 5’s followed by stay and play Duplo sessions (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) already up and running. St Mary Magdalene’s annual Christmas tree festival is back this year, following the official opening on Friday, 3rd December.

We are so pleased to see this wonderful community event return, and can’t wait to browse the beautifully decorated trees this December.

The festival is open 10am-4pm daily, and will close after the morning service on Sunday, 12th December. Visitors are asked to wear a mask if possible, and the church can supply masks on the door if needed.

On Christmas Eve, St Mary Magdalene will hold a 9 lessons and carol service at 6.30pm.
