c an’t believe we’re already at this time of year - time flies when you’re busy and living in a pandemic (although coming out of the other side now, hopefully)...

It’s been a busy few months since Launceston Life was last at your door. Within that time, we have acquired a new publication which we’re really excited to take forward - formerly known as the Bodmin Banner, it is being rebranded to ‘Bodmin Life’ (read more on pg 25).

With this new and exciting change, we decided it was only right to give Launceston Life its own new look, so in this edition, and future editions, you will notice the change in logo, as well as a new and improved front cover design and a different look within the pages too.

As summer draws out and autumn begins to unfold over the Cornish countryside, we may not be spending as much time in our gardens, but it’s important to keep an eye on the wildlife that might take up residence here. In this issue, we hear from Nikki Rule-Jackson from local wildlife rescue Littlest Wildlife Hotel, who gives us some tips on how to support hedgehogs and other small animals over the colder season ahead (pg 63).

Make sure you get out and about in Lanson this autumn to take advantage of all the fantastic independent businesses who, as always, have wonderful things to take home - from foodie treats for Bonfire Night family barbecues, to wonderful autumnal home decorations and Halloweenthemed goodies for the children. Celebrating ten years LAUNCESTON ROTARY CLUB CELEBRATE TEN YEARS IN THEIR COMMUNITY SHOP

T

e Rotary Club of Launceston h celebrated ten years of operating their community shop in Southgate Street, Launceston, this month.

The shop, which has a fantastic range of clothes, home items and more, has raised over £350,000, most of which returned by way of grants to groups and organisations in the Launceston area. In line with Rotary International’s worldwide aid commitment, £5,000 of profits are allocated each year to national and international disaster appeals.

To mark the anniversary, Launceston Mayor Cllr Leighton Penhale and Rotary District Governor Mike Champion were guests at a gathering in the shop along with volunteers past and present.

Cllr Leighton expressed his thanks to Launceston townsfolk for continuing to donate high quality items for sale and for supporting the Rotary Shop.

Launceston Rotary Club President Julia Hague voiced appreciation of the hard working shop volunteers, adding, “Without which the shop could not continue, we look forward to greeting regular customers, and are always ready to chat about becoming a Rotarian, shop volunteer, or perhaps applying for a grant on behalf of your local organisation.”

Rotary International is sharing worldwide responsibility for global warming, therefore the Rotary Club of Launceston has created an environment protection role, appointing Rotarian John Barnes as lead. John said: “Shops such as ours contribute to preserving natural resources by recycling consumables.”

Rotary competition highlights talent amongst young people The Rotary Club of Launceston recently promoted a Young Photographer’s competition for people aged 4-18, held in memory of past president and enthusiastic photographer, Dennis Howson.

Rotary member Mrs Sandra Maizels said: “We chose Wild Nature as the theme and are astonished at the skilfully composed photos including a robin taken at close range by a 7-year-old and a perching kestrel beautifully framed in a blue spring sky, photographed by another young entrant.”

The competition was judged by members of the Launceston Camera Club. Judging Panel member, Pedro Landers said: “Many entries demonstrated the photographer has an eye for a good image. Photographic skills can be learned but the ability to see a good subject is much harder to achieve.”

Mrs Maizels said: “We fondly remember Dennis Howson, to whom the competition was dedicated, and were privileged to have the support of Dennis’s daughters who generously donated and presented trophies and gift vouchers.”

The prize presentation took place on Sunday, 27th June in the Rotary Community Shop. Launceston Camera Club topped up the prizes by offering photography tuition to the Senior category winner.

The show must go on 2021 Causley Festival of Arts & Literature is a hit

T

e Causley Festival of Arts & h Literature held its first hybrid festival in July, combining physical and digital workshops and events for 2021.

Hosted this year by Ellie Mason plus the band of volunteers who organised the weekend, which was held between July 23rd and July 25th, the festival proved to be a huge success.

In 2020, the Causley Festival went completely digital, but it was important for organisers to start introducing some physical events to this year’s programme, so the decision was made for the weekend to be a hybrid festival, incorporating both digital and physical events.

The Causley Festival of Arts & Literature aims to promote the work and life of Launceston poet Charles Causley, while encouraging creativity and a greater understanding of Launceston’s rich heritage amongst local people and visitors to the town.

Events this year included writing workshops, art exhibitions, readings and talks, herbarium walks at Lawrence House Museum, poetry and theatre performances across town, guided tours and live music.

Host Ellie Mason said: “The show must go on, as they say, was so true this year as it was for last. As the digital host for two years in a row, this year it was an absolute pleasure to see both familiar and new faces from far and wide. It is with huge thanks to Launceston Town Council, The Rotary, our Crowdfund donators, the Arts Council and so many more of our amazing supporters that we were able to stage this year’s hybrid festival, which was an amazing blend of physical and digital events. King Kaston showING bravery in the face of leukemia

On the 23rd of July 2020 I got the news no mum wants to hear.

Kaston had leukemia and honestly I couldn’t think straight - all I kept saying was no, no, no, why are you saying that? Stop saying that, he is in that room fine.

I had so many questions and the next 24 hours seemed to go so slowly but so fast too. He was immediately hooked up to a drip for fluids and platelets. We were told we needed to go to Bristol that very morning and that we could be there weeks or months, it all depended on how well Kaston responded to the initial intense chemotherapy treatment.

He was immediately hooked up to platelets and a blood transfusion because his levels were that low.

Kaston needed daily chemotherapy. He needed to have a port fitted into his chest to have all the medication administered that way and it will be with him the whole time of his three-and-a-half-year treatment. I was also told that he would have a lumbar puncture and a bone marrow test while in theatre.

Kaston’s school and parents were incredible - they sent cards and presents to cheer him up and it didn’t go unnoticed by the staff.

Since July 2020 to March 2021, Kaston has been in and out of hospital for weekly chemotherapy, blood tests, lumbar punctures and injections which are all part of his treatment.

One thing that will stick with me was in Bristol when Kaston asked, 'Do I have cancer? Will I die?'

celebratING new expansion despite the pandemic

B

nbury’s Beauty Spa in Launceston has expanded, a despite the challenges thrown at small businesses during the pandemic.

The salon, located on Madford Lane in Launceston, has been the home of Banbury’s Beauty Spa since August 2015. Owner Claire Banbury and deputy mayor Cllr Helen Bailey cut the ribbon to announce the space upstairs officially open on Monday 19th July.

Claire said: “In July 2019, just before the pandemic, I decided to expand.

Financially and because we were closed over the lockdowns, it’s such an achievement to have been able to expand.”

The upstairs of the building has been transformed into a relaxing, quiet space for clients to enjoy their treatments, with the addition of an office, three massage therapy rooms and a lash and brow bar.

Claire, who started Banbury’s with a single treatment room in 2004, added: “We are very grateful to all the tradespeople and contractors who have helped make this a reality, and I am very grateful to be able to expand my business in a pandemic.”

Meet Potter Ben creator of stunning Cornish clay pots

I

a little cottage tucked away in n Polyphant, you will find shelves of beautiful pots, handmade by local potter Ben McManigan.

Ben, who started his pottery career when he was 15 and went to the Medway College of Art & Design, creates stunning works of art from his home in Polyphant - mainly Raku pottery, inspired by Japanese culture with hints of his own unique style too.

On a warm, grey day in August, Launceston Life went along to visit him, finding out more about the art of pottery and even how to make our own pot!

Ben was encouraged early on by his father and pottery teacher, before heading on to the Medway College of Art & Design (now the University of Kent) where he was the youngest student in his year.

Around 1975, he graduated with a National Diploma in Ceramic Design and at this time the arts and crafts movement was big. Bernard Leach, potter and art teacher, was Ben’s inspiration and after graduating from college, he made the move from Kent to St Ives, where Bernard had a gallery. After Ben showed his own pots to Bernard, he received strong words of encouragement and Ben knew he would continue with the style he was already practicing - the Japanese pottery known as Raku.

Ben went on to open a pottery in Rochester before moving down to Cornwall and setting up a pottery in Polyphant. It was from this point that he ran the pottery studio at Morwellham Quay for a few seasons and also made pots for exhibitions in Kent and London.

“I like to have a presence here,” Ben explained. “For the last 40 years I’ve been making the same pots using Cornish clay from St Agnes, and I source all the copper myself, mainly on the Tamar, and then begin grinding it to a powder. I like the fact it’s all my own work.”

Most of Ben’s pots are striking blue and green colours, with dark, earthy tones from the copper, and he likes to follow the Japanese philosophy by making sure the pot is ‘perfect within its imperfection’.

“It’s a balance between keeping the tradition and making it interesting too,” he said.

As well as making his stunning Raku pots and bowls, Ben also creates pots for pet owners who have had www.launcestonlife.com

to put a beloved animal down. The pots feature the pet’s hair within it, creating a meaningful permanent keepsake for the owner.

The pottery making industry is not as simple as throwing some clay on the table and fixing it into shape. Ben spends days digging the clay, then sieves it of any impurities, stones and greenery before putting it in the pugmill. The clay is then left for a month, then ‘pugged’ again and left to mature. He also mixes his own glazes for the pots - a secret recipe - and sources copper in the stones on the Tamar, before grinding it to a powder to be used in his designs. Ben said: “The actual sitting on the wheel and throwing the pots is a very small part of the process.”

Ben then led us to the place where all the magic happens - an outbuilding in his garden where the pots are thrown and created. We were even allowed to sit at the wheel and make our own pot, and Ben often welcomes small groups in for pottery lessons.

“I hate wasting clay, and so I want the people who come in for lessons to be serious about learning,” he said. “It’s a very precious living thing. We’ve dug up Mother Nature to make a pot, so it’s important to treat it like that - it’s not playtime. I like to think that people leave with an enthusiasm for the work, and might like to go away and practice some more!”

Cat Pack Devon cats unexpectedly hitchhike to Cornwall for the day

T

o ginger cats from Devon took an w unexpected journey into Cornwall recently, after they accidentally hopped into a delivery van.

Karen Amery from Okehampton was driving home one evening when she received a call from an IKEA delivery driver asking if they could deliver a package. He and his colleague stepped over Karen’s two ginger/white tom cats Bertie and Harry to carry the boxes into the back garden.

“Within minutes of them leaving, I sensed something was wrong,” Karen told Launceston Life. “The ginger boys were nowhere to be seen. For approximately five or six years I have acted like a crazy woman telling drivers to check their trucks because Bertie has been known to hitchhike before.”

After realising Bertie and Harry were gone, Karen tried the driver’s mobile several times but as she was their last drop, their phone was switched off until the following morning. But after chatting with them, she knew they lived in Launceston.

On their arrival, Karen took a photo of the drivers, Ash and Pavel, and posted the good news online where she received approximately 500 likes and comments.

Karen added: “Bertie and Harry were anxious to run into our house. They were fussed and fed their favourite food.

• Cuttings can be taken now of perennials or clumps dug up and split into new plants.

• Seeds can be collected, hardy annual seeds and bi-annuals can be sown now for next year.

• Cut down herbaceous plants to ground level as the last flowers fade.

• Lawns will benefit from scarifying and spiking and also an autumn weed and feed.

• Hedges can have their final trim and Beech hedges will hold their leaves if cut in late August.

• The stony tracks now gently drop away to reveal panoramic views of the moor.

• Continue on this track to reach the ancient standing Nun’s Cross.

• Take a left here towards a shut-up farmhouse to discover a water leat and flank the leat out onto the wild moor until you reach the narrow road.

• Turn left, uphill in the Princetown direction to pass a layby parking area.

• Continue on the road to find a wide stony track on your left.

Town plan Revitalising the Town Centre

C

vid-19 has presented many challenges to us all over the past 18 months, o however it has also offered Launceston a unique opportunity to explore how best to revitalise the town centre and attract visitors back.

After the first national lockdown in April 2020, a small group of people representing different organisations came together in response to the government’s ‘Reopening Highstreets’ agenda which was intended to encourage people back into towns once restrictions were eased, resulting in street closures and the addition of sanitiser stations, signage and maps.

Since those early days the Launceston Town Plan Group has grown in representation (including Town Council, Chamber of Commerce, Cornwall Council, Launceston CIC, the Orchard Centre and Launceston CDT) and has submitted a number of funding applications with a view to investing in the town centre and plan for the future.

The group were recently successful in a funding application which will see proposals for safer, greener streets in the town centre, creating a town centre which is more accessible and enjoyable for pedestrians and cyclists whilst also increasing planting, providing seating and promoting better use of outdoor space for events and business.

After the challenges and changes of last year, it was a delight to be able to celebrate the induction of our new Mayor with a ceremonial event in the Town Hall.

Having been elected to the role following the elections in May, Councillor Leighton Penhale was able to invite family, friends, dignitaries and local Mayors to his formal induction. The numbers were reduced in comparison to previous years, so as to allow all attendees more space as we still adjust to life returning to some normality.

The Town Hall has very quickly established itself as a ‘go-to’ venue, and after the sell-out events of Francis Rossi and Gary Delaney, there is still so much more to come. Whenever I write this piece, I often feel that it may appear to just be a roll call of stars and shows, but then I realise that is exactly what the Town Hall now offers. Over the coming months we have Mark Watson, Seann Walsh, the 60’s invasion, Joey the Lips, Women in Rock, Dom Joly, Ed Byrne, Omid Djalili, Rich Hall, Gyles Brandreth and Kerry Godliman. After the video-streamed Christmas light switch-on of last year, we are working hard to stage this year’s event in person. The Christmas Working Party is collating all the ideas and working on what events we can bring to the town. We will have brand new Christmas lights this year and are working on lighting up the town with even more lights than usual. As well as the light switch on, the Chamber of Commerce will be holding late night shopping events in the build up to Christmas, to give us all the chance to visit the fantastic array of shops we have in the town.

I hope that on visiting the town centre you will have seen the new noticeboards and maps. These are the first part of ongoing updates and improvements that we aim to make to ensure the town centre remains an attractive and welcoming place to visit for residents, businesses and visitors alike. Our grounds maintenance team undertook replanting at the multistorey car park, and I am delighted that at last we have a worthy floral display in the car park beds that accompany the planting in and around the town, so ably put together by Launceston in Bloom.

Getting ready for Autumn Launceston Parish Churches

have reached that time of year e when many of us start to think about the upcoming harvest festival services and events that will be held over the autumn season.

Launceston Parish Churches have a number of special services taking place which are dedicated to this time of year, plus a candlelit memorial service at the end of October to remember all those who have passed away over the last year or so. In addition to this, there will be further church activities and services including Messy Church for the little ones.

St Mary Magdalene Harvest celebrations - Sunday, 17th October, 10.30am, harvest festival and blessing of the business community. Between then and Saturday, 30th October, the church will be open for exhibition of local businesses and organisations to give thanks for God’s provision and blessings during the year.

St Thomas Church - Sunday, 31st October, All Souls Service, 6pm. A candlelit memorial service for all those who have passed away in the last year. Please submit names of loved ones on arrival at the service for inclusion in the roll call.

Temporary closure Outrage as Launceston’s MIU closes until October

T

e decision to temporarily h close the Minor Injuries Unit in Launceston has sparked outrage within the community.

The decision, which was suddenly announced by Cornwall NHS Foundation Trust towards the end of July, will mean that the MIU in Launceston will be closed until the 1st October, with staff relocating to the next closest MIUs at Stratton, Bodmin and Liskeard.

This sudden decision was met with confusion, concern and distress from the community, and local resident Roz May set up a petition to hold those responsible for the decision to account and demand answers on the future of Launceston MIU. Roz says she wanted to help give the community ‘a voice’ to be heard by those who had made the decision. She said: “We could see how many people were speaking out on Facebook and we wanted to give them a voice and a way to be heard by those who made this terrible decision.

“In other places, temporary closures have turned into permanent ones and we didn’t want to sit back and let that happen here. Sometimes it can feel like there is nothing that can be done once the powers that be make a decision, but to lie down and do nothing just lets them get away with it.

“The decision to proceed with the temporary closure was made by a group of joint health and social care leaders who have been meeting regularly to manage the demand for these services.

“The temporary closure came into effect on Sunday, 25th July to allow staff to be relocated to the minor injury unit in Liskeard. Liskeard minor injury unit is a much larger unit and is, therefore, able to see more patients. Staff from Launceston will also work in the minor injury units in Bodmin and Stratton.

“This decision is in line with the Trust’s business as usual and Covid resilience plans which consolidate resources to ensure we are able to maintain safe services.”

The Trust says anyone who needs urgent but not emergency care should call 111 in the first instance, where you may be directed to an appropriate service.

Conservative MP for North Cornwall, Scott Mann, says he is working to support Launceston during this uncertain time. He said: "I have held a very constructive meeting with The Interim Chief Executive of Cornwall NHS Partnership Trust, and their Head of Communications. My team and I learned a lot about the challenges of staffing in a pandemic when the staff have already been flat out for months on end.

“This decision was made without a proper consultation and without considering the needs of the locals in the area, and now, with the petition, the locals have shown that they want answers and how much the MIU is needed here.”

"As with many employers, there are no easy solutions to short term staffing problems like the ones they are facing. However, I made the case for increasing services at Launceston and Stratton in the medium term and offered my help with whatever they require from the Government to help support the health provision in Launceston at this tough time.”

A spokesperson from Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust said: “We recognise we should have done more to share this decision with the local community and apologise for our lack of communication.

Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust says Launceston MIU will be closed until 30th September and will keep the decision under continual review. All other services at Launceston Hospital will operate as usual.

On your doorstep THE LIFE TEAM TAKE A DAY TRIP TO LAUNCESTON CASTLE

W

are working on a new series where we tell you, e our lovely readers, about local attractions and why you should visit: ‘On your Doorstep’.

Recently, Ellie decided to take us on a little trip up to Launceston Castle and why not, when it’s just a walk across the town centre?

Claire lives in Bude, so this was a first for our water-loving sales executive, and Rosie hasn’t been to the castle since she was in school! So Ellie thought it was only right to take us up and let us have a little wander for a fun team afternoon outing.

Launceston Castle is run by English Heritage and can be seen standing tall and proud over our town.

The oldest parts of the castle date back to just after the Norman conquest, and the 13th century round tower was built by Richard, Earl of Cornwall.

The castle dominated Cornish history, with its grizzly jail of which founder of the Quakers George Fox was imprisoned in 1656, plus the use of the castle as the base for the Cornish Royalist defence.

The castle is surrounded by ruins of the old courtyard, bailey and great hall, plus the south and north gatehouses - the latter being the location of Cornwall’s prisoners for many, many years.

But the main event of the trip is, of course, taking the steep, narrow stairs up to the top of the castle. We peered through to the skies from the bottom of the tower where we stood, we climbed the rounding staircase all the way to the top, taking in the far-reaching views across Launceston and the beautiful countryside, and then we carefully trod back down again, even spotting an adorable black and white cat curled up in the long grass below.

• R efill jars, bags and bottles instead of buying plastic at your local refill store.

• P ick loose fruit and veg in a supermarket rather than the ones in plastic, or use your local green grocers!

• A sk your local butcher to put your meat in your own containers to save on packaging.

Wildlife Watch KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR HEDGEHOGS

W

i th autumn approaching, it’s time to think about the wildlife that ventures through our gardens.

In autumn and winter, there are often new threats for hedgehogs to think about - one of the main ones being bonfires around 5th November, plus threats to their habitat.

Nikki Rule-Jackson from Launceston wildlife rescue Littlest Wildlife Hotel has given us some tips on what we can do to protect our little prickly friends.

Before any bonfire is lit, the contents should be moved, giving any animal living within the pile the opportunity to escape.

When tidying up the edges of the garden for autumn/winter, check the banks and overgrown areas to see if a hedgehog is using it as a place to sleep and to protect it from being slashed by a strimmer, which can cause catastrophic injuries.

If you see a hedgehog out in daylight in the autumn/winter months, this means they need help. This is the one time you can pick up and place the hedgehog in a box to take to a rescue without fear of doing the wrong thing. Hedgehogs don’t sunbathe! Don’t give the hedgehog food, wait for the rescue to decide when they can eat.

According to Launceston Then, Dockacre House dates back to the 16th century and supposedly has a secret passage that is thought to lead to the Castle or St Mary Magdalene Church - spooky!

A detailed book on the house was written in 1988, describing strange moments when pictures fell off walls and banging and tapping could be heard at night. A night in October 1987 was said to have been especially harrowing, when a relative came to stay and heard scratching at the dining room door late at night. That same night, he was dozing off when his bedroom door suddenly opened twice, forcing him to bolt it shut.

In the 70s, a local milkman delivered milk to the door early in the morning, when looking up, he found a ghostly figure of a man looking straight down at him from one of the top windows. We are now at the time of year when hav (summer) has come to an end, there are fewer havysi (summer visitors or tourists) about, and there is a feeling of kynyav (autumn) in the air. The word kynyav seems to come from kyns gwav which means ‘before winter’.

THE LITTLE RED BUS

Soon it will be Hallowe’en which, in Cornish, is Nos Kalann Gwav, literally ‘the eve of the first day of winter’. The Cornish for November is mis Du – literally ‘black month’, which I always think is very appropriate as the days shorten and the sun sinks lower in the sky.

In Cornwall, the festival of Allantide is traditionally celebrated on the same day as Hallowe’en. This festival focuses on apples, especially large sweet red ones which were given to family members to bring good luck.

u may have wondered what has o happened to the Little Red Bus, the local community bus run by volunteers.

As with many organisations, the past 18 months have been very difficult. The Little Red Bus team had to move out of their office as the property was being sold, so Derek Broad (Homeleigh) kindly allowed them to keep the buses at the garden centre. It was impossible to operate a viable service during this time.

Allantide is associated with St Allan who was the bishop of Kemper (Quimper) in Brittany, celebrating the harvest and the closing of the year.

The photo shows avalow rudh (red apples) in the Mother Orchard at Cotehele where many local varieties of apples grow.

Now, having moved into the Gateway Centre with their office there for the foreseeable future, it is hoped it will be manned from 10am until 12 midday, Monday to Friday.

In August, the team took a bus onto the Saturday market to promote a need for volunteers in the office and drivers, while promoting the proposed half-day journeys out to start the programme. Monday’s Bodmin run, and Friday’s Launceston shopping journeys, have already started. >> All information can be obtained from the Little Red Bus office and also the Tourist Information Office. Affordable Homes Planning application aims to tackle housing crisis

L

unceston Community Development Trust has submitted a a planning application for 28 eco, affordable homes in Launceston in response to the affordable housing crisis.

The Trust, led by people who live and work in Launceston, says hundreds of families in the area are unable to own their own home due to low incomes, and that the proposal for the 28 dwellings (PA21/05647) are designed for local people and to do something about the ever-increasing demand for affordable housing.

Having researched the need for affordable housing in the town, the Trust has found that the demand for locally allocated, affordable homes in Launceston is extremely high. The scheme will give 28 local families the chance to own their own home, as well as taking advantage of the flexibility of the scheme with a mixture of tenures, including 1% shared ownership which will enable families to become a homeowner for as little as £2,000 and no need for a mortgage.

The homes are to be built by local people and the Trust says everyone in the area, from neighbours, the local economy and environment, have been considered throughout the planning process. These homes are designed to be high quality, light and airy modern houses for people who already live and work in the community and hope to keep local people in the area.

The Trust hopes this scheme will mean more young people will stay in the area, and that future generations will benefit too.

Doing our bit Launceston Life publications recognised as carbon neutral

A

s you will already know, here at Launceston Life we produce our quarterly community magazine, as well as other publications that can be found around the town.

With the addition of Bodmin Life, the first due out in November, we are growing a wonderful company and with that comes a responsibility to the environment - particularly when paper is concerned.

That’s why we were so pleased to find out that our printing company, Deltor, has been accredited as one of just a handful of certified Carbon Balanced Printers in the UK by World Land Trust. In addition to holding ISO14001 certification, Deltor has taken further steps to reduce their carbon footprint, including investing in 480 solar panels positioned on the factory roof, producing 120kw of power and meaning printed products are produced using sustainable energy.

By offsetting their remaining emissions with World Land Trust, Deltor has balanced the equivalent of 140 tonnes of CO2, helping the Trust to protect over 24 acres of threatened forest and habitat.

Carbon Balanced Print is a result of the combination of using carbon balanced paper and produced by a carbon balanced printer - which means the annual impacts of fossil fuel usage, transportation and electricity consumption are measured and balanced. World Land Trust offsets these emissions by protecting threatened habitats and regenerating degraded habitats. Patrons of World Land Trust include Sir David Attenborough, Steve Backshall, David Gower and Chris Packham.

With carbon offsetted paper and Deltor’s accreditation, this means the whole process of the printing of Launceston Life and our other publications is offset, resulting in a carbon neutral magazine!
