Firstly I want to say a big welcome back to all our businesses now able to open and operate fully, and with the positive daily news of recovery fingers crossed for the 21st June when all restrictions will be lifted.

Secondly I hope you have enjoyed the last few editions, and getting to know Claire and Rosie. Though they have only been onboard the Launceston Life team since November, it feels like they have always been part of the team to bring you your community magazine.

JULY 23 - 25 2021 After the year we’ve had, missing out on so many events last year, we’ll all be pleased to see the return of much-loved festivals and events this year.

This includes the annual Causley Festival of Arts & Literature, which will return to Lanson this July over a digital AND physical format.

Taking place over the weekend of 23rd to 25th July, the Causley Festival is being planned as we write this, with hopes to welcome back many familiar faces, as well as the addition of new acts to the lineup over the weekend.

The festival celebrates Launceston, Cornwall, history, the arts sector, poetry and of course, Charles Causley. Over the weekend there will be a variety of readings, workshops, performances and creative events, so be sure to mark the dates in your diaries!

For those of you who may have some spare time on your hands in the summer, there’s still the opportunity to be involved. Why not volunteer for one of the festival’s events or, if you have a local venue in Launceston that’s free between 23rd and 25th July, why not host an event yourself? Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) has announced plans to host its Rainbow Run Your Way fundraiser from 19th to 20th June.

Rainbow Run has become an event synonymous with sunny days and explosions of colour across three different locations in the south west including RAF St Mawgan in Newquay. Last year due to COVID restrictions the event went virtual and still raised £100,000 for the charity. This year participants will be encouraged to once again take on the Rainbow Run in their own way.

The aim will be to collectively raise £30,000 for each of the charity’s three children’s hospices, including Little Harbour in St Austell, a poignant target to reach for the charity’s 30th anniversary year.

It is free to take part in this event but CHSW encourages everyone to register on its website to ensure they have access to event information and free resources. If participants raise £15 or more in sponsorship they will be sent a 30th anniversary commemorative medal after the event.

‘Dartmoor Laddie’. This 380hp, 4x2 unit with steel suspension was one of only three on the Harris fleet to ever have the blue livery. Notably, in 2004, Corgi produced a 1:50 scale limited edition model of this Brian Harris artic unit (model no CC11910).

The ERF was re-sprayed to Terry’s own colours and then stretched to a 5.1 metre wheelbase 6-wheeler, with a new body built by Gavin Ellacott. The 14 litre Cummins engine was rebuilt and retuned to 425hp by Pannell Commercials and the registration was changed to M12 TRD. Congratulations T R Doidge!

Bude Canal & Coastal Walk 2 – 3 hrs moderate walk on a tarmac towpath along the grassy undulating coast. Public toilets are situated in the car park at the start of the walk. Refreshments are available at The Weir Tea Rooms and at the Bude Canal Wharf. Take sun cream as there is not much shade on this route.

Launceston Town Band PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

Here in Lanson, the local town band is ever present, its exuberant tunes familiar to all as they ring out across town during local events and celebrations.

The deep, mellow, yet cheery sound of a town band nestles itself into a community. We all become accustomed to its unique sound. Across the country, summer fetes, community celebrations, Remembrance commemorations and the like are all accompanied by town bands. It’s a tradition that seems to be deeprooted wherever you go.

Mike Warne and Tony Uglow, both long-serving members of Launceston Town Band, wanted to share a little bit of the band’s history, as well as their own experiences of playing over the years.

The ‘Launceston Municipal Band’ was formed in 1919 when the following resolution was passed: “That the Launceston Municipal Band be formed, outside the territorial force” - the territorial force presumably being the territorial army reserve attached to the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. In June 1920, minutes record the band received four Bb cornets, three Bb clarinets, 1 Eb clarinet, two tenor horns, one euphonium, two bombardons with carriage straps, one bass drum with sticks and straps for drums, all thought to have been purchased from Messrs Boosey, a leading firm of instrument makers. The band already owned one tenor trombone and one Bb baritone (horn), so the band’s original instruments comprised a mixture of brass, woodwind and percussion, the same as a military band.

However, in May 1924 it is recorded that the committee agreed to dispose of the clarinets and buy more brass instruments, and since then the band has been a brass band without woodwind instruments. The band later received a donation of instruments from the vicar of St Stephens who had presumably kept the instruments left behind by the St Stephens Band, who had disbanded at the outbreak of the First World War. Tony Uglow, proud Launcestonian whose family have lived in the area for generations, joined the band in 1956 as a ten-year-old boy and still has connections with the band today.

“We used the old Congregational Sunday School Room down Northgate Street as our Rehearsal Room in those days, long before the neighbouring Congregational/ Baptist Chapel collapsed - although, frankly, the Sunday School Room was in a fairly dangerous state, as I recall. The first floor balcony was a no go area due to it's dilapidation with holes all over the place,” Tony recalled.

It was some time after this that Eric Smith became chairman of the band and they were able to access a room under what is now Stags estate agents, before the band was moved into the present building.

Former solicitor Mike Warne, who moved to Launceston in 1980 and joined the band that year, holds the original lease to the bandroom. What was once a disused chapel was leased to the band for a seven-year contract for £10 rent per year in the 60s. Finally, in 2009, the bandroom was transferred to Launceston Town Council, after some difficulty surrounding the price of the rent following the 1970s local government reorganisation. This new lease was to last 21 years with four trustees of the bandroom on a full repairing basis at the same rent of £10 per annum.

After giving up playing in the band in 1989, Mike continued to be involved and in 2011 he became chairman and is still very much involved today.

The musical director of the band is now Ann Brown, who was previously principal solo cornet of the band for a continuous period of some 40 years.

Summer is upon us and now is the time to sit back, relax and spend as much time as you can enjoying the fruits of all your labour in the garden.

It’s teaming with life everywhere now. Of course the weeds don't stop growing and the lawns need regular cutting. The main issues in the summer garden are water and pests.

• Try to collect as much rain water as you can, this is especially important if you grow in pots or have vegetables.

• Avoid indiscriminate pesticides, prevention is a better method.

• Be tolerant of insects - lots of them such as ladybirds

and lacewings eat aphids.

• Encourage birds to your garden, blue tits love picking aphids from your plants, thrushes and blackbirds love to eat slugs and snails.

• Fine netting over your vegetables will stop butterflies laying their eggs on them, caterpillars hatch quickly and eat lots.

• Net fruit bushes before Mr Blackbird feasts on them.

• By feeding your roses once a month you will keep them strong and more resistant to pests and diseases.

• Spring bulbs can be lifted and stored, or left in the ground but let the leaves die back before cutting, all the goodness goes back into the bulbs.

• De-head regularly to prolong flowering.

• Support tall perennials to stop heavy winds and rain bashing them down.

• Prune early flowering shrubs when they have finished blooming, but check for bird nests first.

• Plant out summer bedding.

• Take cuttings to increase your plant stock, share and swap with friends - free plants are great!

Most of all just enjoy your outdoor space. The garden can be such a sociable place, invest in some solar lighting or some seating to make the long light evenings more magical outside. Summer is the time to enjoy!

LAUNCESTON FOODBANK CHARITY SHOP OPENS ITS DOORS AS

Launceston Foodbank Charity Shop has been open on Newport Industrial Estate since March 2015.

It was opened to raise funds to keep the foodbank running when grants were no longer an option. We started to find that when people donated food, they also donated clothes outgrown by their children, clothing they didn’t wear any more, unwanted gifts, crockery that didn’t match their colour scheme; the list goes on. “Let’s open a charity shop to sell all these donations,” - so we did.

Six years later and three closures due to COVID, we are still open and keeping extremely busy selling and sorting donations

at rates we could never have imagined six years ago. We also recycle the clothing and bedding that does not reach the shop floor, sell items that are unusual or brand new on selling sites and sell on books, DVDs and CDs we cannot fit on the shelves. This additional income together with the daily takings keeps our treasured foodbank open four days a week.

The hard work put in by our lovely staff, wonderful volunteers and the amazing volume of donations we receive from the community; the charity shop goes from strength to strength and we look forward to meeting customers old and new.

DITCHING THE ZOOM CALLS FOR FACE-TO-FACE MEETINGS THIS SUMMER

Over the last year or so businesses have been making the most of the opportunities available between lockdowns to try and ensure they can keep going.

Whilst online meetings have become the norm we all know that face-to-face is the most human way to interact, and the committee of the Launceston Chamber of Commerce are keen to encourage these connections. In partnership with Haines Watts, a local firm of Chartered Accountants and business advisers, the Chamber has arranged for two events to take place in July, ‘Reconnecting Launceston’.

For those able to spare some time in the mornings, the first event is from 8am to 10am on 8th July 2021, at the Eagle House Hotel. Haines Watts will be supplying bacon butties and coffee for all business owners and professional advisers – you just need to register first by emailing your details to launceston@hwca.com.

The latest from Launceston Town Council

Following the elections, the work will be taken forward by a newly elected Council. Of the 16 councillor seats we have, 15 of these were filled at the election, and the Council will be co-opting (or choosing) the 16th member at the June Council meeting.

At the first meeting of the Council after elections, we have to nominate a Chairman to the Council. As Launceston is a town, we are able to call the Chairman the Mayor, and I am delighted to announce that Cllr Leighton Penhale was nominated to be the Mayor of Launceston for 2021-22. Cllr Penhale has been the Deputy Mayor for the past two years, so has been able to gain experience of the role ahead and I know you will all wish him every success in the coming year.

The election saw two new members elected, and they are Councillors Davey Green and Bonnie Soanes. We welcome them to the Town Council and look forward to working with them and sharing their ideas and suggestions in how we can continue to improve. The councillors who will represent the town for the next four years are:

The Council also nominated a Vice Chairman (Deputy Mayor), and Cllr Helen Bailey was duly nominated for this position. Cllr Bailey works with many groups and organisations involved with the town and I know that between the two of them, our Mayor and Deputy will serve the town to the highest level.

As I explained in our last update, we had been undertaking a large amount of work in preparing our venues for re-opening, and our sites are looking excellent. We have refurbished rooms, erected new signage and had paint and repairs undertaken to the crest at the front of the Town Hall. As custodians of such wonderful, historic buildings, we must ensure they are maintained to the highest standards possible, but that does mean that sometimes even the simplest task can end up being a long drawn-out process, as we attempt to find the correct types of paint and ensure that we employ only those contractors that specialise in the works required. The Council recently employed Mr Martin Cornish as our Estates and Properties Manager, and together with his team, he has undertaken a whole range of work and due to the nature of our historic portfolio, some of that work has been rather challenging, but the end results have been superb.

The Council recently agreed to have the area of land at Snowdrop Crescent in Stourscombe, cleared of all the overgrown vegetation. This work will be undertaken shortly and we will be asking residents local to the area what, if any, changes they would like to see at the site. As the town is lacking in green open space, it may be a good site to plant some trees and make natural footpaths across the site, so as residents in that area of town can make use of the space. We need to take into account the residential nature of the area, so whatever is undertaken is in keeping with what you require. Therefore please feel free to contact us with any views and ideas.

Why‘back to school’

The past 14 months have seen the well-worn phrase ‘back to school’ take on a whole new meaning: no longer is it limited to a desperate search for school shoes, seeing if they still fit and stocking up on stationery. Children at school today are facing concepts unthinkable pre-Covid.

This year back to school has meant so much more: are we able to physically open the school? Will school be face-to-face or online? What days are we doing Covid tests? Have you registered your home test result online? When/where will we be wearing facemasks? Who’s cleaning frequently touched surfaces? Are we socially distanced – one metre or two? If we are facing forward does that make a difference?

It is incumbent on those of us fortunate to work in schools to have children’s wellbeing at the forefront of our minds and actions as we work with young people who have shown tremendous resilience, and have been through so much. This will be an ongoing process: we do not yet know the impact of lockdowns, of being confined to bubbles, of all the measures imposed to safeguard health but that have put great pressure on the young people in our care.

At our school, wellbeing was a focus for the first days of return, through PSHE and underpinning our interactions with one another and the children.

Wellbeing Week has furthered this focus, and the care, compassion and community that are central to our ethos have seldom been more relevant.

Back to school? It is so good to have children in classrooms and labs, on the AstroTurf and in the outdoor learning centre, digging in the vegetable beds and planting in the greenhouse. THE EVOLUTION OF

Launceston High Street When you’re out and about in town, do you ever stop, look up and wonder what our high street would have looked like 100 years ago? on the White Hart side. On the Nisi Prius side, there were three shops - occupied by a watchmaker and grocer, a bootmaker (can you guess which shop resides there today?) and a barber.

Before the hall and county jail at Bodmin was established in 1838, Launceston was once the centre for all county court hearings, taking place in the town centre at the Guildhall. In 1840, the county jail at Launceston Castle and the Guildhall were demolished, making way for a new market house. The Upper Market, known to many as the corn and butter market, was located in the town square, and a new meat market was established by St Mary Magdalene’s Church, now where the Market House Arcade stands today. Unfortunately, many people weren’t pleased with the overall look of the butter market, which had been designed by architect George Whightwick in an Italian style.

In May 1875, the Cornish & Devon Post reported that a fire had broken out at Mr A Lyne’s shop on Broad Street, a grocer and

Today, as cars roll along the tarmacked roads, shoppers quip in and out of the shops and residents stop for a chat with old friends by the war memorial, it’s easy to think this modern town is worlds apart from the old Lanson, with its horse and carts trundling along dusty roads, the old butter market attracting eager local folk, and the clanging of metals and the old Cornish accents ringing out across the square.

With thanks to Roger Pyke from Launceston Then for allowing us to print the information he has on the history of the town centre, as well as supplying some amazing photographs of Launceston from times past, we have put together a little bit of backstory on the town and how the high street was and always will be an important part of our community.

In the early 1800s, the old Guildhall was situated in the centre of Broad Street and was divided into two halls, one for the Nisi Prius and the other for the Crown Court, located

forage dealer. Sadly for Mr Lyne, the fire engine ‘The Volunteer’ broke down after pumping water from the reservoir for just a few minutes.

People formed a double line, passing buckets of water to tame the flames until The Volunteer was repaired and was able to put the fire out completely. Unfortunately, this didn’t save Mr Lyne’s shop, and ruined two other residents’ homes.

The butter market became ‘the hub’ of the town for many years, right up until the war years. When the end of the First World War came, it was decided in 1919 to demolish the butter market to make way for a new war memorial. By the end of 1920, the butter market had been removed from Launceston.

There’s no doubt that Launceston’s history is rich, interesting and full of old characters and events. The making of today’s high street and square is thanks to the hard work and dedication from the town and its business owners, but also tribute to the developments made by people in the past.

On 25th May, 1921, the Duke of Cornwall laid the foundation stone and the building of the war memorial began.

The town centre remained this way for the next 80 years, before the square was pedestrianised with the Launceston Townscape Heritage Initiative. Controversially, it stopped motorists parking in the square.

Today, we can still see remnants of Launceston’s past in the buildings that stand tall along the old streets. The war memorial, which was altered with the coming of a second world war, is honoured each year for Remembrance commemorations, and the

Comical Entertainment is back!

As June the 21st quickly approaches and the economy opens up, Comical Entertainment is looking forward to welcoming people back to their comedy shows at Launceston Town Hall.

Local fans of comedy and entertainment have supported Comical Entertainment so well since they first began bringing quality comedy and spoken word shows to Launceston back in 2018 and they have got some great shows for you moving forward.

Comical Entertainment’s first show is Mark Watson - How You Can Almost Win. Mark’s a veteran of the comedy circuit, TV and radio, and is on Thursday, 1st July. Not a day too soon, as far as Comical Entertainment are concerned, after a 15-month hiatus. This show starts a calendar of events coming this year.

Francis Rossi of quintessential rock band Status Quo rocks up on 6th August, recounting the hedonistic days of touring life, from the 60’s through to opening Live Aid and beyond.

The next show is their first ‘returning’ comedian, Gary Delaney - Gary in Punderland is on 8th August, he’s Comical Entertainment’s personal favourite and a favourite across the country too (Dawn French came to the first of Gary’s show with them). His shows sell out fast so don’t miss your chance to see one of the best one-liner comedians touring today.

Castle Vets welcomes new members to the team

The past 12 months have brought challenges for our Small Animal Department, but excitingly there are also some new faces on the vet team.

In January we welcomed Jenny Ross. Jenny graduated from Bristol Vet School in 2010. She brings with her a wealth of experience having worked in a variety of small animal practices across the South West. She has recently completed a post-graduate certificate in Small Animal Medicine - a qualification that requires dedication and a lot of hard work to complete - this puts her in an even better position to provide excellent care for your pets. Jenny enjoys all aspects of small animal general practice.

She is equally happy giving advice on preventative healthcare for young healthy animals as she is dealing with complex and challenging medical conditions. In her spare time (when we let her out of the consulting room) Jenny spends as much time as possible with her beloved spaniel Reuben - together they have been exploring the moors and coast.

The Small Animal partners Mark Tucker, Claire Waters and Tabi Boughtflower were also joined last summer by Rosina Traverso working part time on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Rosina recently moved to Boscastle and is mad enough to be found swimming in the harbour come rain or shine all year around - without a wetsuit!

Laura Champ has now been with us for nearly two years and splits her time equally between the Farm and Small Animal departments.

Katie Knowles, who many of you know on both the Farm and Small Animal Vet teams, has recently devoted her time to doing purely Small Animal work in order to cover Tabi's maternity leave. Tabi will be coming back to work this summer and we are delighted that Katie has decided to remain on the Small Animal team full time on her return.

Finally and very sadly, the end of May sees Loretta leave to focus on her vegetable and fruit growing business.

‘Don’t let Covid back in’ CORNWALL COUNCIL’S MESSAGE AS ROADMAP RULES CHANGE

Residents and visitors in Cornwall are being urged to make sure they know and follow the new government rules, which came into effect on Monday, 17th May. Cornwall Council’s Public Health team is urging everyone to follow the rules, get tested twice a week with free Lateral Flow Device (LFD) kits and have the vaccine when invited.

They should also self-isolate immediately and book a confirmatory PCR test if they experience Covid symptoms.

Rachel Wigglesworth, director of public health for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, said: “We’ve shown Covid the door – don’t let it back in. That’s my main message.

“To keep the virus at bay and avoid another lockdown, everyone needs to make sure they know what the new rules are and not to break them.

“Covid and its inevitable new variants are looking for any chinks in our armour so we must keep our defences as strong as possible.

This means following the rules, remembering ‘hands, face, space and fresh air’, getting tested regularly, having your vaccine and making sure you self-isolate and have a test if you have any of the key symptoms – a high temperature, change in taste or smell, and a new cough.

“We’re not out of this yet, and we all need to play our part if we want to get back to doing the things we love.”

People are being reminded that although the vaccine programme in Cornwall is on track and working well, having the jab does not give people a green light to ignore the rules.

In brief, the rule changes from 17th May are: · You can now meet indoors as two households or as part of a group of six, including pubs and restaurants; · Gatherings of up to 30 people are allowed outdoors; · Indoor entertainment and attractions can open; · Overnight stays are now permitted for two households or groups of six; · Organised indoor sport for adults can take place; · Care home residents can have up to five named visitors and more visits out of their care home; · Up to 30 people can attend weddings, receptions, wakes, bar mitzvahs and christenings; · The number of mourners at funerals is based on venue capacity; · All outdoor entertainment can take place;

LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY ARE NOT JUST FOR THE ELDERLY It’s a common misconception that Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) are for the elderly or those diagnosed with Alzheimers or dementia.

Although essential in these circumstances, they should be given careful consideration by all.

In a recent interview with Kate Garraway (GMTV presenter), she spoke about being unable to pay bills when her husband Derek was struck down with Covid-19, in March 2020. Derek still remains in hospital and Kate is trying to support their children, home and retain her job. Kate has no rights over her husband’s affairs and is unable to access their joint bank accounts, refinance their mortgage or even upgrade their mobile phones. Kate is self-employed and has relied on financial support from friends when she’s been unable to work. The majority of us do not have friends who are in a position to offer such support.

If Derek had drafted Finance & Property LPAs, Kate would have legal authority to access accounts held solely in Derek’s name, or in their joint names. Kate would be able to look after finances and property on Derek’s behalf. This would have made Kate’s life easier and less stressful. We owe it to our loved one’s to have these documents in place.

You must have mental capacity if you wish to draft an LPA, why put it off? There are two types of LPA: Finance and Property and Health and Welfare.

HOW YOUR LOCAL SPORTS TEAMS ARE GETTING BACK TO IT THIS SEASON

If one thing has been missed over the dreary lockdown periods we’ve endured over the last 12 months, for many it has been going out to play their favourite sport or supporting their local team on weekends.

We were delighted to hear from some local sports teams who are eager to get back to the pitch:

LAUNCESTON FOOTBALL CLUB David Harrison, Launceston Football Club committee All of us at Launceston Football Club are eagerly anticipating the resumption of action, in a safe and secure environment at Pennygillam, for the 2021/22 season.

The Clarets First Team will continue in the SWPL, the highest level of Cornish football, with the Second Team looking to build on their success in the St Piran League.

The Youth Team will once again play in the DJM League.

One particularly exciting development at the club has been the rapid growth of the Girls Section, under FA Qualified Coach Zoe Curtis. Zoe and her team offer inclusive football opportunities for all females, across a full range of ability levels, from Age 5 right through to Adult.

Zoe and her coaches aim to develop players on an individual basis, as well as within a team framework.

The key aspects are inclusion, determination but, most of all, fun!

Training sessions take place on Wednesday evenings, with matches generally held on Sunday mornings. New recruits are guaranteed a warm welcome.

LAUNCESTON ROAD RUNNERS Ann Barriball It’s been a challenging year for the club, but members remained engaged during the lockdowns through a number of monthly online challenges, including marathon relays, daily streak targets and elevation challenges.

However, it is great to be able to meet in person again, and with risk assessments in place and social distancing rules in place where necessary, the roads around town are once again full of happy runners.

Social runs take place on a Tuesday evening, meeting at the bottom of the multi-storey car park in the town at 6.45pm. A range of different distance groups are offered, including 3, 5, 6 and 7 miles groups.

Thursdays are training sessions, meeting at Penngyillam industrial estate at 6.45pm, with the club’s qualified coaches offering interval training, hill reps, etc. The sessions are suitable for everyone.

SOUTHGATE COLTS FOOTBALL CLUB Paul Bruton, Secretary Southgate Colts have been offering junior football in Launceston for over 30 years and provide a safe and friendly environment for both boys and girls from age 5 to 16.

Mini coaching sessions are held in partnership with Plymouth Argyle and then youth teams play in either the Devon Junior Minor League or East Cornwall league. Safeguarding the young club members is an absolute priority and all Southgate Coaches and officials are subject to FA DBS checks and can only assist when they have achieved their level 1 coaching badge.

In the past the club has been very well supported by local businesses and a special thank you to Philip Warren and Son who provided match kits for all age groups. As with many other clubs 2020/21 has been very difficult with club funds being adversely impacted so any support from local businesses or organisations would be greatly appreciated.

KENSEY VALE BOWLING CLUB Alan Addis, club secretary Kensey Vale Bowling Club was pleased to open at the end of April although we had to play under the national restrictions.

However now that more people are allowed to be on the green we are looking forward to welcoming new members and indeed people that just wish to try the sport, no equipment needed except flat shoes or trainers as we have a number of bowls you can use, free coaching is available if required.

Kensey Vale as a club has members aged from nine to ninety all enjoying both friendly a competitive bowls during the Summer and indeed during the Autumn and Winter on the short mats in the clubhouse. Also we have social evenings making use of the bar and well equipped kitchen run by the members for the members. If you decide to join the Club we offer a vastly reduced subscription for the first year.

Volunteer this summer!

LAUNCESTON ROTARY CLUB Launceston Rotary has been in the town for almost 75 years, with their anniversary being next year. Through the work of the members over the years and the opening of the Rotary Community shop nearly 10 years ago in Southgate Street, they have served the community in so many ways, from supplying most of the Lego for the Lego Club and giving grants and donating to causes locally, to extending their arms internationally through links with Launceston College and their projects in Africa, and joining in the Rotary efforts to eradicate polio throughout the world together with the Bill Gates Foundation. All profits from the shop are channelled back to the local community.

Launceston Rotary, a small group of 15, meets every Monday. Whatever time you are able to give is gratefully accepted and there is no pressure. The chance to volunteer to help Launceston through Rotary spans across helping in the shop, getting involved with local causes the club supports, helping out practically when the town has an event scheduled and bringing an idea to make a difference in the community and seeing it through.

This coming Rotary year starts in July and the focus is Environment. Incoming President Julia Hague offers a warm welcome to anyone who would like to give it a go. Julia said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity to meet both long standing Lanson residents and those of us who are newbies over a drink and a chat, and if you like us (and I’m sure you will), get involved in making a difference in the environment, especially in our beautiful town, and make some friends along the way.”

LAWRENCE HOUSE MUSEUM Lawrence House Museum, which reopens to the public on 1st July, is on the lookout for volunteers to help improve the museum’s garden.

The garden is in the process of having a revamp, with a new herbaceous border, under the lead of volunteer head gardener Tony Howe. It is hoped the newly improved garden will give visitors an insight into how the garden would have looked in the 18th and 19th centuries whilst incorporating some areas to encourage bees and wildlife.

However, the museum would love to hear from anyone who is green-thumbed or just wants to get involved in this project, to help out in the garden as it is transformed. Even just sparing a couple of hours of your time would be a great help to this friendly bunch of volunteers. You don’t have to be a garden expert, just have a love for the outdoors and share in the joy of what can be achieved! There is a small disclaimer though - the museum can’t promise sunshine... wellies and a decent raincoat are sometimes required!

LIONS CLUB HELP MULTIPLE CAUSES

This was taken up by the Lions Club of Torpoint and Rame Peninsula, and together received many beautifully knitted Teds, which were distributed to the ambulance and fire services as well.

Following this, the club were asked if they were able to provide any items for dementia patients, so members offered some of the Trauma Teds. The club then realised that several of the care homes in the local area also have dementia units, so have been able to supply some Teds to them too!

The club also asked local knitters to make hats for the neonatal units and maternity units. These were made in great numbers and have been supplied to both units at Treliske, Derriford, Barnstaple, Exeter and Torbay, as well as the birthing unit at Penrice.

This, together with being able to supply disadvantaged children with laptops and tablets, has enabled Lions members to help many despite the restrictions of the pandemic lockdown, embodying their motto of ‘We Serve’.

These tend to be in ‘official’ situations but there are many ways in which we can bring some Cornish into our lives without too much effort, writes Tim Hambly.

One way is to use Cornish greetings in emails and text messages. Here are some you could try out: Dydh da = hello (literally good day) Myttin da = good morning Mar pleg = please Meur ras = thank you Oll a’n gwella = all the best Why not use these in your communications?

You could put the Cornish first then the English like this: ‘Dydh da / Hello’, until your correspondent is used to the Cornish.

Sometimes on social media sites like Facebook it is nice to react to things in Cornish: Keslowena! = congratulations!

Chons da! = good luck!

In addition to this, there are Cornish birthday and Christmas cards available.

It is common to see houses and boats named in Cornish – this has been a tradition for a long time and I am sure that it will continue into the future. It is worth remembering that the Cornish language has its own grammar which is different in many ways to English, so it is unwise to think of a name in English and use a dictionary to make a Cornish name, without much knowledge of the structure of the language. This has led to some unfortunate and sometimes quite funny results! It is easy to get advice on this: Cornwall Council’s Translation Request Service is free for translations of under 40 words.

There are plenty of songs, hymns and carols in Cornish as well as poetry and other literature. It would be easy for groups to include one item in the Cornish language in their repertoire. Cornish speakers would be pleased to advise on pronunciation and would be very happy to see the language being used like this. Performing in Cornish is a great way to promote our unique identity!
