Welcome to the Spring issue of Launceston Life our biggest yet! I’m Claire, I started working with Ellie and Rosie in November taking on the Sales Executive role.

I have had 14 years’ experience in media sales and look forward to meeting you all and bringing the Launceston community together with Launceston Life.

I have already spoken to many of you, getting to know you and your businesses in these challenging times. There is always such positivity from everyone, all adapting your business models and rising above the challenge.

Spring is here and signs of new beginnings are everywhere, with hope and light at the end of the tunnel now that the vaccine is being rolled out across the country and signs of lockdown being lifted and some normality to return.

The challenging year we have had has reflected how everyone in the community has pulled together, from shopping local to local businesses supporting those in need. I personally feel that although the lockdown has been a challenge, it has also taught me to appreciate things a lot more, to slow down in life. I have learnt new things that maybe I wouldn't have done if it wasn't for lockdown. I have changed my attitude towards life. No matter what challenges are thrown our way we need to stay strong and positive and together we can overcome them.

MEET

ADAM PAYNTER

Adam Paynter is a familiar face in the Launceston area - Cornwall Councillor for Launceston North and North Petherwin, deputy leader of Cornwall Council and also a well-known figure in the local farming community.

Adam lives on his family farm in North Petherwin with his wife and two young children. The farm, a former dairy farm, has been a huge part of Adam’s life.

He said: “We used to be a dairy farm, but we sold the milking herd around seven years ago, so since then we have rented the land to a local beef and sheep farm because I’ve been busier with council work.

“I’ve now just started to convert some of the old stone barns on the farm into houses, so that’s been taking up quite a lot of my time.”

Adam is also keen on using renewable energies on the farm, having installed two small wind turbines and some solar panel arrays.

Adam has been driving electric cars for ten years, and began doing so after he saw just how much mileage he was racking up travelling from North Petherwin to Truro and realising the impact the emissions would have on the environment.

The Paynter family has been on the farm in North Petherwin for 110 years, having purchased it in 1912 after the Duke of Bedford, who owned a lot of land in North Petherwin and Werrington, as well as Tavistock, sold it.

“I’ve lived in this house all my life, and our two children have always been involved on the farm,” Adam continued. “In fact, my great grandfather and his father were both Cornwall Councillors, which is quite a nice little story in our family.”

Adam has been a Cornwall Councillor with the Liberal Democrats for 20 years. In the last four years as Launceston North and North Petherwin’s councillor, he is pleased with the amount of investment that he has helped bring to the local area.

Just a few of these highlights include £11-million towards the improvements to Launceston College; £7-million invested into the new primary school which is being

built at Hay Common; working with health colleagues to expand and improve Launceston Medical Centre; and introducing two new pedestrian bridges and the widening of the Kensey Bridge which will give better access to residents in that area, an improved link to the Zig Zag path and reduce traffic congestion, improving air quality for St Thomas Road.

In addition, Adam is delighted to have seen progress in the development of the Launceston Hub, which could see the introduction to a new library, with a £3-million investment. He has also helped acquire land off the Link Road to produce affordable and social housing; an investment of £200,000 for local highways projects; the establishment of two electric car charging points; community grants to local groups; and plans for enhancements to the town centre.

In addition to being a Cornwall Councillor for the area, Adam previously served two years as Cornwall Council leader as part of the local authority’s Liberal Democrat and Independent coalition.

He said: “It was a real honour to lead the council from 2017 to 2019 and it has also been a highlight of mine to be deputy leader since then, making sure some big projects across Cornwall are delivered. This includes the duelling of the A30 at Temple, and the Camelford Bypass is also moving forward nicely. The council has been the number one council for providing affordable housing in the country over the last two years.

“The big investments are important, but it’s also about the small projects to help the community out - to help them get housing, to help get their children get a place at school - it’s about making a difference to people’s lives. I think that’s what politicians should be doing, helping the communities they serve.”

LAUNCESTON FOODBANK

Like many other charities, Launceston Foodbank’s main focus throughout the current pandemic has been to remain open and continue providing help to those in our community who need support. We take solace and enormous pride in having kept the foodbank open with the help and dedication from our staff, volunteers and management committee.

Without the amazing donations made by the people of Launceston, local supermarkets and businesses, we couldn’t operate. We are incredibly lucky that we do not have to buy food but we do hold a contingency fund in case of shortages.

We do not charge for food, delivery or other items such as clothing, bedding etc given in crisis. We are a registered charity with the charity commission and a limited company with a management committee and trustees overseeing our whole project, which includes our charity shop, also on Newport Industrial Estate (although currently closed due to the current lockdown) It’s been hard having to change the way we operate; no longer can we have “our doors open” to welcome people in for a cuppa and a chat whilst their food parcels are prepared.

The personal touch we pride ourselves in has gone for now; at present we talk through the open window across a table so we still have face to face contact but it isn’t the same.

Sometimes when the world seems cruel and you feel you are walking around with concrete boots on; a chat about anything but your problems helps so much. We do feel the anguish and heartache many are going through and it not only stays with us all but it makes us stronger and more determined to do whatever we can. We are extremely fortunate that we work with over a hundred different agencies ranging from local schools to addiction groups, churches to social care. These agencies not only issue foodbank vouchers but they are there for us to signpost our clients onto them or ask them for their advice on how to help someone. This working partnership is vital to the working of the foodbank and we thank all agencies that are working in unusual and difficult circumstances.

Mental health is mentioned constantly on the news and social media; do not underestimate the many, many reasons why someone struggles. It’s not easy to understand nor is it easy to ask for help. You may ask yourself, what has this got to do with food parcels; but it has everything to do with the food we give, as this is an act of kindness and kindness means a great deal when the world is against you. No matter how small that act is it really can make the difference between a good or a bad day; never underestimate a smile, hello or a how are you feeling today.

We saw at Christmas how much people just wanted to do something to make Christmas more bearable for those less fortunate than themselves; donations of food, chocolates, biscuits and presents came in quantities we had never seen before. We made up and delivered 136 hampers of food for Christmas day including meat vouchers and helped many parents have presents to wrap for their children.

None of us know what is around the corner nor what the future holds, but if the past year has achieved anything, then it is the importance of thinking of others.

If you have been keeping up to date with our news online, you will have seen ‘Launceston Community Development Trust’ come up a lot!

That’s because the Trust - which is led by six local residents as its directors, including our very own Launceston Life managing director Ellie has three huge projects which are set to benefit the town.

These projects tackle three very real issues for our town - lack of affordable housing, creating more outdoor green spaces to also benefit the environment, and providing better sports and fitness facilities and activities.

So, let’s get into each of the projects and how they could benefit you, and the wider community…

AFFORDABLE HOUSING AT PROUTS CORNER The first aim for Launceston CDT is to provide 30 affordable homes at a site just on the outskirts of the town, with the hope that this will help more local residents stay in the town and present greater opportunities for people to get onto the property ladder.

Located at Prout’s Corner, the housing will fit the government and local authority’s definition of ‘affordable’, as well as taking into account the location, design of the builds and people’s earnings.

The scheme will offer shared ownership, meaning you will rent a certain percentage and cannot take a mortgage on a property. However, if you decide to pay a higher percentage each year, your rent will decrease.

Already, the scheme has received a high level of interest from local families, mirroring the need for this housing. Applications will be considered by looking at the need, local connections to Launceston and even taking into account participation within the community, with keyworkers such as teachers and nurses standing a good chance of getting a home here.

The homes will be high quality, designed by AK Architects Ltd, and the site will also prioritise open public spaces and renewable energy sources. Launceston CDT is being assisted with the delivery of the scheme by Resonance Ltd, a social impact investment company.

The appeal that went out just before Christmas resulted in over £6,000 being raised to bring the vision to life. This much-needed funding will help pay for wheelchair-friendly paths, nesting boxes, benches for the picnic area and so much more.

Now we are presenting an opportunity to you, the community, to find out more about this project which will see the introduction of a woodland and wildflower meadow to the town.

On Friday, 19th March, Launceston CDT will be hosting a community consultation event from 1pm to 7pm via Zoom - or hopefully even face-to-face, covid restrictions allowing.

And as a little thank you to everyone who donated towards this much-needed project, the team are sending out a little thank you. Keep an eye on your emails, where you will be asked for your address to receive a little something in the post.

ACTIVE LAUNCESTON A year on from the start of the pandemic, many of us have come to realise the importance of keeping fit and active - not only for our physical wellbeing, but also for our mental wellbeing.

Now more than ever, it has become clear just how much Launceston needs more sports and fitness facilities. That’s where Launceston CDT’s Active Launceston project comes in.

Active Launceston is a new initiative that aims to increase the level of activity in the local area, bringing the community together through utilising the sporting outlets Launceston already has, while also exploring future assets that could help residents stay active.

While staying at home has been the norm for a year now, there are plenty of us who relish in their daily lockdown exercise - whether it’s a run, a walk or joining a fitness Zoom class.

It is clear that Launceston lacks outdoor space for this purpose, and this is something Active Launceston is hoping to address.

Before Christmas, a survey went out to Launceston households, asking for their input to see what they would like to see be introduced as part of the initiative.

Complete Care & Support has quietly celebrated its 2nd year anniversary this month, and I have to admit that when we first started, we did not anticipate that we would have a year like the one we have all just had, writes Sarah Pinnell, managing director.

Summer 2018 saw us planning the start up of the business, policies and procedures.

Registrations and master paperwork all had to be written and developed, and happily I spent much of that summer sat in my garden preparing these. By January 2019 we were ready to go, approved to start delivering care and support to the community of Launceston and the surrounding areas.

We value our team of community workers, and we feel that they are the most important cog of the wheel in Complete Care & Support.

The last year has been the most difficult of my career, it has been relentless and feels never-ending, but I could not be prouder of my team. They have worked through it all with good grace, a fair amount of humour and with kindness, consideration and love in their hearts.

Since Covid-19 became a regular feature in all our lives we have doubled in size and expanded our coverage to include Callington and Gunnislake, with future plans to include Saltash, Liskeard and Bodmin. We have grown our office and support team to enable us to manage the growth and actively encourage our team to achieve their health and social care qualifications, and offer apprenticeships to encourage new recruits into the industry.

As I have worked in the industry for around 14 years, I could see the need in my local community for a team who put the client first. We slowly started to build and grow, with valuable team members joining us for training and to start working with people who had made the decision to stay living in their own homes and communities for as long as possible.

If this last year has done anything for the Health & Social Care industry, it has shone a light on how valuable these services are and the people who work in this industry are dedicated and selfless in their desire to help others.

Kit Hill Circular A medium walk on uneven but well-trodden pathways encircling the midriff of Kit Hill. Be aware of various livestock roaming in the country park and ground nesting birds, ensure your friend is on their lead.

• Your starting point is the first car park on the left of the Kit Hill access road, PL17 8HS; • Pass through a wooden gate onto a wide path veering slightly to the left; • Follow this tramway, identified as the YELLOW ROUTE, take in views on your left of the River Tamar up to Plymouth Sound, then gently veer right; • The tramway becomes a path through the ruins of South Kit Hill mine • Gently veer to your right, with fields on your left and moorland scrub on your right • Continue to pass through a wooden gate to join the BLUE ROUTE; • Continue along this footpath to reach a rocky track, taking care on any uneven surfaces • Keep to the track to rise up onto a wide grassy walkway.

The Charles Causley Trust is getting ready to launch its 2021 Causley Festival of Arts and Literature in July.

Since 2010, the Causley Festival has brought people together in Launceston to revel in poetry, reading, writing, art, music, theatre and more. The festival has become a huge part of Launceston’s annual calendar, promoting the work of local poet Charles Causley (1917-2003) while encouraging others to explore their own writing and other means of creativity.

Every penny goes a long way, so if you can spare some money, please visit www.crowdfunder.co.uk/the-causley-festivalof-arts-literature to find out more about the festival, what the money will be used for and how you can help and donate.

With fundraising having already started, the festival is now reaching out to artists to express an interest in taking part in the 2021 events. The festival welcomes expressions of interest from all types of artists from a variation of arts types - music, dance, theatre, art, writing, poetry, lectures and workshops. Artists should be comfortable with the prospect of performing, speaking and taking part both physically and digitally.

Due to current restrictions, it is not yet known whether all or some events will take place digitally, but it is hoped that there can be more physical events this year, restrictions allowing.

In 2020 came the coronavirus pandemic, which meant the Causley Festival committee had to completely rethink their approach to the event - they went completely digital, holding online workshops and events. It was a hit and drew in audiences from the local area and across the world - but there was one downside to this.

Sadly, the festival missed out on that all important funding raised from ticket sales and bar sales. Without this money, the future of the festival is uncertain. Now, they have established an online crowdfunding platform to raise money to secure the future of the Causley Festival of Arts & Literature.

The festival also welcomes expressions of interest from currently under-represented groups within the arts, including - but not limited to - artists of colour and disabilities.

News from LAUNCESTON TOWN COUNCIL

The remaining £765,203 is funded by the precept, Simply put, this means that for the forthcoming financial year a Band D property in Launceston will be required to pay £253.13, which is an increase of 63p. Your direct contribution to the Council allows us to operate the large range of assets and services we offer. As well as the Town Hall and Guildhall, we also own the Ambulance Hall, and operate the cemetery at Upper Chapel, the closed cemetery at Dockacre, Westgate Street Multi-Storey Car Park, four sets of public toilets, Southgate Arch, Lawrence House Museum, Newport Roundhouse, the Priory Ruins and the Rest Garden at Newport, the Visitor Information Centre, the Library, Windmill Wood, Priory Park, Grammers Park and Lanstephen play areas, allotment sites at Grammers Park, Kensey and Dutson, the coach park in Westgate Street, the Band Room and the Green Room. We also manage the Town Square and Parade Ground, and run monthly markets.

After a somewhat different Christmas to the one we normally enjoy, we are now concentrating on which events and activities we can safely achieve and undertake as we move into the year ahead.

As with so much of last year, much of what we do will be different to that previously, but nonetheless we want to ensure that the Council continues to provide all that it can to local residents.

The latest from Launceston Town Council

Our superb library team worked tirelessly, looking at ways we could re-open the building and provide a safe environment for library users. We have a click and collect scheme in place, and we hope as time progresses to be able to offer more services.

In the Town Hall, our stewards team have been undertaking the type of work that we usually struggle to fit in, as the site is always so busy. They have been putting all their skills to good use and have completed the decoration of the changing room, all ready for when we open our doors for all the top acts and events that we have come to expect.

The Council has agreed on new wayfinding signage throughout the building and at the time of writing we were preparing for this to be installed. The signage will provide the finishing touch to a wonderful building

As well as actively supporting many of the events and festivals which take place in the town, we also provide the Christmas Lights and give grants to local organisations. We are responsible for public seats, some public lights and bus shelters, extensive grass cutting and horticultural work across the town, footpath maintenance and the grounds maintenance contract for a large part of Coronation Park.

As we always do, the Council agreed its annual budget in January. We require a budget of £999,057 for 2021-22, and this will be funded by £213,164 from our assets and

PROPER FOG

Proper Fog is an up and coming business in Launceston, offering a BioFogging service as an addition to normal cleaning practices in the workplace.

Joanna and Simon Catling began this venture in July 2020, following the devastating outbreak of Covid-19 in the UK earlier in the spring.

Proper Fog’s BioFogging service is a fantastic addition to cleaning practices already in place. Their work involves coming in to fog the whole area with a fine mist of Sterizar, which is a skin-safe, pet-safe, plant-safe and food-safe sterilising product. Launceston is responding to the challenges of the pandemic with an eye to the future!

Despite the impact of Covid19, Launceston has seen the emergence of an exciting new partnership with an ambitious vision for the town. The Launceston Town Plan Group was established following the first lockdown with the aim to get the town up and running again whilst recognising that shoppers might be nervous returning.

The group, made up of representatives from a number of local organisations such as the Chamber of Commerce, Launceston Town Council, The Orchard Centre, Launceston Community Development Trust and Cornwall Council, successfully bid for just over £12,000 from the Reopening High Streets Safely Fund (European Regional Development Fund) for in-shop safety posters, noticeboards, Covid-19 signage, sanitiser stations and additional seating. Alongside this a number of streets in the town centre were temporarily closed to aid social distancing. The road closures in particular have resonated well with the majority of businesses and visitors.

The Town Plan Group is now looking to build on its success with a bid to Cornwall Council’s Town Vitality Fund. This will look to engage local people on what’s important to them whilst drawing together more detailed proposals for future funding bids.

Annette Baskerville- Smith, a representative from Launceston Chamber of Commerce and chair of the Launceston Town Plan Group, said: “These are exciting times for Launceston and by working together we can take advantage of funding opportunities to bring about improvements across the town. We will be providing regular updates via local media and encourage people to get involved where they can via launcestontpg@gmail.com".

Mayor of Launceston, Cllr Dave Gordon, added: “Launceston Town Council received a presentation at their extraordinary meeting of the 9th Feb 2021 and Cllrs were unanimously in support of the Town Plan Group's proposals. LAUNCESTON PRIMARY SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION WELL UNDERWAY The construction of Launceston College Multi Academy Trust’s latest venture, Launceston Primary School, is now well underway on the Hay Common estate.

Work is taking place on-site to prepare the grounds for the 71 modules, which make up the school building, to be delivered over a three-week period in March/April.

Principal Designate, Emma Kerr, is excited by the progress: “I have had the honour of being involved in this project for many years, including the design of this fabulous, state of the art school building. This school has been a long time coming for the Launceston community, so for us to finally see the preparatory work taking place is such a thrill!”

“The indoor and outdoor physical space is a critical part of my vision for the school,” continued Emma. “Our pupils will become designers and makers from a very early age as the learning environment inside and out has been designed for them to ‘tinker’. Outside play spaces will be designed to be dynamic flexible spaces to intrigue and inspire curiosity, encouraging creative exploration and will be constantly evolving.”

Emma added: “At Launceston Primary School, the overarching curriculum will be ambitious, broad and balanced with an academic focus on mastering the key skills of literacy and numeracy whilst emphasising creative and expressive learning. We know pupils are capable of achieving great things and we will help them to believe this too.”

Launceston Primary School is opening in September 2021 to Reception pupils and will gradually fill to Year 6, reaching a capacity of 420 pupils.

Emma is also keen for Launceston Primary School to become a hub for the people of Launceston: “We will have this phenomenal provision for our community to access outside of school hours. How exciting is it that we have a dance studio, a sports hall and the outdoor multi use games area which can all be utilised!”

PANDEMIC DOESN’T PUT A STOP TO THE WORK OF LAUNCESTON LIONS

When Covid-19 hit, Launceston Lions had to take a step back from coming together, but the pandemic hasn’t put a stop to their charity work.

President of the Lions, Christine Rowe, and her husband Peter, have been working with organisations to benefit local children, as well as patients at Derriford Hospital.

An appeal recently went out to the community, asking for donations of any unwanted laptops and tablets to be distributed to local primary schools so all children can be given the chance to work remotely.

Michael from Short Circuit in Launceston offered his help, free of charge, in reformatting and repairing any donations that came in, so that they could be used once again.

So far, 35 tablets have been received and distributed to different schools in the area and they’re still coming in!

The Lions Club’s second appeal was for toiletries to be given to patients at Derriford Hospital, who have not been able to see their families due to Covid-19 restrictions.

The response was great, with a huge box of donations from Tesco Launceston, as well as bags of donations from Poundland.

President Christine Rowe said: “Very, very many thanks to everyone who supported our appeals and donated items. They have been very well received, and please keep them coming in these troubled times. While the Lions still cannot meet, the club has been behind us every step of the way.”

Spring Gardening Tips Well, the first signs of spring are everywhere around the garden - the first snowdrops and early daffodils, the leaf buds on the trees, the first frog spawn, the cheery bird song and of course the dark nights are drawing out.

Take a wonder around your garden and feel spring in the air, it will brighten your day and give you fresh excitement and inspiration.

Spring is a very busy time when it comes to looking after the garden, and the lists of jobs are endless so perhaps set yourself one or two jobs a day to make a start.

● ● ●

● P rune shrubs that flower on new wood, for example Buddleias and hardy Fuchsias, also early flowering shrubs such as Forsythia after it has flowered. ● W inter Heathers can be cut back with shears removing faded flowers and promoting new growth. ● Hydrangeas can now have their old flower heads cut off, down to the first leaf bud, also remove any old or dead stems at the base. ● T his is the last chance to trim any hedges that missed their autumn cut, before the beginning of march, the start of bird nesting season. ● Lawns

can be scarified to remove moss, fed with a high nitrogen food and any repairs done before cutting time begins. ● R oses can be hard pruned now before the first leaves open. Pruning encourages new shoots and plentiful flowers. Remove any

dead stems, and feed with a good quality rose food and continue every 4-6 weeks through the season.

Summer flowering bulbs such as lilies and alliums can be planted now. These are great in pots, as well as filling in gaps in borders.

Dormant Dahlias can go in the ground at the end of march if frosts are over.

Summer bedding and hardy annuals can be sown from seed in the green house.

Vegetable plots can be hoed over and a good general purpose fertiliser applied.

First early potatoes should be 'chitting ' by now, ready to be planted at the end of March.

Vegetable seed can be sown in the greenhouse or outside if the soil is dry enough.

Weeds will start growing in earnest now, so any spare time would be wisely spent getting on top of them as they appear.

If you have a spare sunny corner, try sowing some wildflower seeds for the bees and butterflies. They make a beautiful display and provide vital nectar.

Beware of the weather in spring, it can turn quickly. Sowing and planting is all go, mild spells will encourage germination and early growth which could be knocked back by a sudden cold snap. Cover early sowings with cloches for protection.

Our third national lockdown has been a tough one, Lanson. Our resilience and patience has been tested, but we hope that with the continued rollout of the vaccine, we will soon be able to start returning to our beloved high street, visit our friendly business owners and independent shops and meet up with friends for coffee.

Since the lockdown first started in January, we have seen evidence of the community pulling together to help everyone get through this difficult period.

Local businesses have offered to continue home delivery services and essential businesses have stayed open to ensure residents are able to get what they need.

This included Launceston Post Office, open 9am to 5pm on weekdays, and 9am to 12.30pm on Saturdays, and Freckles Pet Goodies, who as well as providing essential items for our pets, also offered gas and electric top-ups.

Many businesses decided to offer home delivery services throughout the lockdown, including Josephine’s Garden, Westcountry Premium Venison, Launceston Car Hire, Veg in the Shed and even Flower Scene.

The Westgate Inn has been staying open for takeaway meals, as well as Trethorne Hotel and Golf Club, which has also made its hotel available to essential workers. SW Podiatry and The Sports Therapy & Massage Clinic have also remained open.

We understand how difficult it has been for everyone over the last couple of months, but all we can do is wait for our invitation to receive the vaccine, and keep doing what we’re doing to help local businesses and the community as a whole.

Cornwall has a deep-rooted heritage. Naturally, we often think of its mines, rugged coastline, pirates in dark old inns, pasties and...Poldark.

In all seriousness, though, we are often tricked into seeing just the obvious beauties that hail from Cornwall - but there is something that we often miss when appreciating our beautiful little Celtic county, something that many people in Cornwall are trying to revive.

The Cornish language (Kernewek) is a Celtic language, with evidence of it being used as early as the 9th century. It is thought Kernewek was revived in the 1800s and over the years has been examined and promoted by various writers, speakers and lovers of the iconic Celtic language.

We are thinking of making Kernewek a regular feature in Launceston Life, and we were delighted when Launceston Life reader Tim Hambly very kindly put together the first article.

“The Cornish language is becoming more and more visible around Launceston and the rest of Cornwall these days. It started with the Kernow a’gas dynergh (Cornwall welcomes you) signs on the border. Now it can be seen on many things from buses to street name signs to beer bottles to recycling sacks, to name just a few.

Of course, there has always been a lot of Cornish about – we are all regular users of the language when we use place-names such as Egloskerry, Tregadillett and Tregeare, not forgetting Launceston itself.

Cornish is an ancient language with an extensive literature, especially religious plays and texts from the middle ages. There is a lot of new material being produced including novels, songs and there is a monthly magazine entirely written in Cornish.

Celtic people lived in large areas of Europe and the British Isles during the Roman empire but after the fall of Rome, the continental Celtic languages died out completely as community languages. This left the insular (island) Celtic languages as the only surviving representatives of this group of languages. They have diversified into the

five languages spoken in addition to English in Great Britain and Ireland: Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Manx, Welsh and Cornish. Breton is very closely related to Cornish and is an insular Celtic language which has ‘returned’ to the continent.

I have always been fascinated by the fact that the UK and Ireland are a hotspot of linguistic diversity and that Cornwall is part of that with its own language.

The Cornish language has a growing number of speakers and it is a force for good in promoting Cornwall’s heritage and identity.

LAWRENCE HOUSE MUSEUM The Lawrence House Museum in Launceston has been inviting local residents to fill in a survey to allow them to explore ways in which they can improve their facilities and services.

The survey, which was available to fill in up until 15th February, also gave participants the chance to win a generous £50, with one lucky resident being selected at random by the museum.

The aim of the survey was to gather information about people’s knowledge and experience of the museum. Information received from the surveys will help the museum to develop and improve their services, with hopes of creating more online services and finding new and exciting funding opportunities.

The Lawrence House Museum is a treasure to Launceston. With numerous exhibits, featuring local characters such as poet Charles Causley and astronomer and founder of the planet Neptune John Couch Adams, the museum offers something to suit everyone’s historical interest. It showcases the rich history the town has - royal, political and social.

Typically, a person visiting the museum would find out all about Launceston during the war periods and the town’s famous characters and influential people, as well as being able to see a lifelike Victorian kitchen, how the area’s agriculture sector has developed over the years and a collection of traditional Victorian costume.

One of the highlights, many would think, is the splendid Polyphon - essentially a coin-operated jukebox that still plays all of the popular tunes from the late 1800s!

A JEWEL IN LAUNCESTON’S CROWN

TESCO DOES ITS BIT IN SUPPORTING VOLUNTEERS DELIVERING COVID VACCINE Tesco Launceston has been doing its bit in supporting the volunteers delivering the Covid-19 vaccination to local residents.

The Launceston store’s community champion Shelley Vanstone has been out and about recently, donating refreshments and much-needed snacks to the volunteers administering the Covid-19 vaccine.

Shelley visited Millennium House at Pensilva, as well as making an early morning delivery to the team at Launceston Medical Centre who had given up their Sunday to vaccinate approximately 1,000 people.

Volunteers received huge amounts of fruit, crisps, cakes and bottles of water to keep them going while doing a sterling job in helping to protect the community.

LIDL DONATES MASSES OF FOOD TO HELP THE NEEDY

The Foodbank was delighted to receive the donation, which consisted of plenty of cupboard foods such as cereal and biscuits.

The donations will be used to help feed local people in the community who find themselves in crisis.
