What an amazing summer of celebratory events it has been so far, with the Queen's Jubilee being the largest of all.

We saw street parties, picnics, music, dance, beacon lighting and so much more… it was wonderful to see so much community spirit, and an extra special thanks goes to whoever organised the sunshine so we could all make the most of the long bank holiday weekend!

Continuing with the theme of events we are delighted to have three pages of Wosson in this issue, a sure sign that the arts sector and community groups are bouncing back after a tough few years. If you have a community event or group you’d like us to promote don’t forget to send it over to Rosie or Mimi in the content team.

Talking of the content team, we are excited to welcome Mimi Attenburrow who lives local to Bodmin and will be supporting Rosie with writing about all your amazing community stories.

Mimi will be in Bodmin on a regular basis, so if you want to have a chat about anything content related, do drop her an email.

Introducing the next generation of local musicians Studio Bodmin is a new community project helping the next generation of musicians to burst onto Bodmin’s ever-growing arts scene.

Led by musician Jen Groeber, Studio Bodmin is an opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to create music. With 12 artists accepted onto the project, they will create an album to be sold in the local area, with proceeds going back into another arts project for the community.

Funded by Arts Council England and supported by intoBodmin, Studio Bodmin is a hugely positive step for people wanting to make music, or simply explore undiscovered talents and abilities.

Jen added: “I wanted a real mix of genres, abilities and age groups to reflect the diversity of Bodmin. A lot of people have undiscovered talents and abilities and it’s really nice to support people in exploring that.”

Recording will finish in August and Jen hopes the album will be ready to purchase from various outlets across Bodmin by September.

Beneath the Tracksuit Using the power of words in the face of MS and depression

T

ey say, ‘the pen is mightier than the h sword’ and local MS Warrior, Robert Gillet, has chosen words as his weapon in his fight against Multiple Sclerosis and depression.

‘Beneath the Tracksuit’ is Robert Gillet’s pen name that heads his poetry page on social media, where he has more than 5,000 followers that have formed over the short space of a year.

In 2015, at the age of 25, Robbie was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Knowing that this diagnosis could cause serious health problems, he and his family made the decision to move to Bodmin to be closer to other members of his family.

This is when Robbie found the healing power of words. At first, he wrote as a coping strategy for himself; now he shares his words to help support others all over the world. Robbie’s poems were first formed as a diary to track his illness and the depression and anxiety that it amplified.

At first, Robbie struggled to turn his negative emotions into poetry, feeling an element of ‘embarrassment’ and stigma around writing poetry as a young man. The health benefits this form of expression had, however, finally prevailed and in May 2021, Robbie’s wife Donna finally convinced him to share his words online.

Robbie soon realised that his poetry gave hope and comfort to many people - not just those with MS, but also people suffering from depression and other hidden illnesses and disabilities. His public poetry page aims to give a voice to those that struggle to find their own and he has helped make a whole online community feel less alone.

After some encouragement from local community organisations including SkillShare, Bodmaxx and intoBodmin, Robbie continued to spread awareness by first performing his poems at local open mic nights, which within six months, led to him running his own fundraising event in Bodmin for The MS Merlin Centre in St Austell on the 30th April.

This fundraiser involved local support acts from the Bodmin community that Robbie had met through performing. It included a mixture of music, spoken-word, Robbie’s poetry and some thought-provoking activities that aimed to demonstrate how everyday tasks can be affected by some of the debilitating symptoms of MS. Perhaps one of the most touching moments of the evening was when, from the stage, Robbie said: “I just want to take a moment and tell you all that I’ve just seen someone here tonight that was a customer of mine when I was fitting kitchens, before my MS got too bad and now, he’s here tonight! He’s seen me when I was still a fit young guy and now when my illness has got to this more severe stage.”

What was even more incredible was that the gentleman in question had only heard about the event that day and when he was in a completely different town! It was quite a remarkable, natural story arc.

Through donations, a silent auction of a signed copy of Robbie’s new book, his mum’s delicious homemade cakes and intoBodmin’s generous support, Robbie and his family managed to raise a fantastic £286 for The MS Merlin Centre, St Austell.

In just a year Robbie has been published in multiple magazines, spread awareness locally and online and published his own book, ‘Thoughts of a Warrior’. With five-star reviews, this compelling read was initially only available on Amazon, until Robbie woke up one morning to find it is now being stocked in multiple bookshops throughout the country, including the UK’s biggest book retailer, Waterstones.

Robbie has been greatly inspired by American rapper, Jelly Roll and the pain expressed through his music. Robbie told Bodmin Life: “I started writing poetry, I can’t sing, I’m not a rapper, it’s something I found I can do.”

Now, he is taking the first steps towards recording his own words through Studio Bodmin, a project that has taken on 12 local musicians and artists to record and produce a collaborative CD, which will also lead to a local performance event. Through this project, Robbie hopes to create an emotive track to inspire hope in others with hidden disabilities.

BRIN: Supporting the community Bodmin Relief in Need (BRIN) received more than £6,000 in donations at this year’s Mayor’s Day in May. A total of £605 was raised by Bodmin’s Wassailers as they sang their way around town on Twelfth Night, collecting donations as they went, and £5,750 was raised by Mrs Nikki Cooper during Cllr Jeremy Cooper’s three-year term as mayor.

Joy Bassett, Chair of BRIN, said: “We are very grateful for the funds, especially as we are currently seeing an increase in the number of requests for help due to the rising cost of living. The situation is getting worse. The number of people who can’t afford to pay for basic essentials, pay energy bills or run a car to get to work, is on the increase.

“BRIN is able to help in a number of ways, such as topping up electric and gas meters and providing shopping vouchers for food or clothing.”

Bodmin celebrates appointment of new Mayor and Deputy Bodmin’s new Mayor and Deputy Mayor were officially appointed at the annual meeting and Mayor Choosing Ceremony, held at St Petroc’s Church on Thursday 19th May. The Bodmin Town Council records will now show Cllr Phil Cooper as Mayor of Bodmin and Cllr Mike Barbery as Deputy Mayor, a document that lists the Mayors of Bodmin since 1201 AD. The ceremony included the presentation of cheques to the previous Mayor, Cllr Jeremy Cooper’s chosen charities, which were: The Cove – Macmillan Support Centre, Mind Cornwall and Bodmin Relief in Need (BRiN). BriN has also been chosen this year by our new Mayor, along with Little Harbour Children’s Hospice Southwest.

Sporting achievements, individuals and organisations that have positively contributed to the community were also celebrated at the ceremony. The ‘Mayor’s Special Achievement award’ went to Bodmin Rugby Football Club for their incredibly successful year. Rachael Sharman and Sarah Horne received ‘Outstanding Volunteer’ awards. The ‘Team Spirit’ award went to the Bodmin Hospital League of Friends and the ‘Community Service Award’ went to Bodmin Food Bank, which now provides food for more than 40 families. www.bodminlife.com

Remembering Royal Blue Coaches

Once a very familiar site in the West Country, the Royal Blue Coaches were the favoured form of transport for travelling to and from Cornwall.

Royal Blue was started by my great grandfather, Walter Wilson, who hired out his fleet of open Landaus, two-orfour-in hand-horses and horse buses in Bournemouth. Walter ran his cab company from Eagles Nest Lodge where he had his stables and operated at the Winter Gardens. One of his customers was the Prince of Wales.

He decided to give up the business when motor buses were becoming more popular and sold it to two brothers called Elliott, who introduced ‘charabancs’ (buses) as well as the horse drawn carriages.

The Elliotts decided to retain Walter’s distinctive royal blue livery and hence the Royal Blue buses – coaches that travelled our roads for many years. In 1970 they became the National Express.

Treat your dog at Lanivet K9Kapers

A

r e you and your dog going to be in Cornwall in July? If so, make sure you don’t miss a very special event on Sunday, 31st July.

Lanivet K9Kapers, to be held at the Lanivet One for All Community Centre, Rectory Road, Lanivet, near Bodmin PL30 5HG, is a Kennel Club licensed companion dog show which also offers a host of have-a-go dog activities.

As well as gaining rosettes and perhaps winning prizes they will be able to have a go at agility, hoopers, gundog scurry and flyball, while their owners can shop at a variety of doggy trade stands and enjoy a pasty lunch, a cream tea and an ice cream.

There will also be opportunities to watch as Paw and Order and Bodmin Dog Training clubs’ display teams show the exceptional skills that can be learned by family pets through praise and reward training.

The event is supported by some of the leading dog activity clubs in the Duchy: Cornwall Dog Training Club, Cornwall Gundog Club, 4x4 Flyball, Paw and Order and Bodmin Dog Training Club. There will be catering available throughout the day and an exciting array of trade stands selling just about everything the modern dog may need.

Admission and car parking are free. Access via the main A389 through Lanivet.

Lanivet K9Kapers, held as part of a fund-raising campaign for the 15th century church roof, is sponsored by OracleSoul Media, Mid Cornwall Brokers, The Trustees of the United Lanivet Charities, Oggy Oggy caterers, Kelly’s of Bodmin; Cornwall Dog & Cat Food Supplies and the providers of all the doggy activities on the day.

Lindy Margach, organiser of Lanivet K9Kapers, said: “We haven’t had a KC Licensed companion dog show since Covid. It seemed an ideal opportunity to get things moving again and create a fun day out for dogs and their owners.”

The event opens at 10am, with the first class for the dog show starting at 10.30am. Pedigree groups will compete from 2pm and the Best In Show title, which will draw entries from the first and second-placed dogs in the previous 12 classes, is expected to be judged at about 5.30pm.

Jubilee Celebrations Street party Flags and bunting greeted 150 people as they came to church for the Platinum Jubilee indoor street party on Thursday, 2nd June.

Visitors admired Bodmin Town Museum’s coronation display and Bodmin Keep’s set of vintage objects, while singing and dancing to the music of The Velvets.

Finally, the parade went on to Bodmin Nature Reserve for a short, civic ceremony and the lighting of the Jubilee beacon.

Other beacons were spotted on the horizon, connecting communities up and down the country and beyond. And the last act of celebration, the monument itself was illuminated in red, white and blue.

The National Anthem was sung lustily, and everyone raised a champagne flute to toast Her Majesty The Queen.

Service marking the Platinum Jubilee and Pentecost

St Petroc’s tower bell ringers rang out 96 call changes, representing the Queen’s age and Queen’s Peal on Thursday, 2nd June.

Bodmin’s Jubilee Beacon Lighting Trail In the evening a crowd gathered outside the church for the start of the Beacon Lighting Trail, joined by the town’s mayor, deputy mayor and entourage.

Tracey James played the fanfare composed for the Platinum Jubilee, as the lights on the church windows were switched on and the mayoral procession led the way to Shire Hall.

Then on to the white clock tower where, even in the evening sunlight, royal colours were visible, as the bugler played the fanfare for the third time.

Bodmin’s Rotary Club presented an evening of classical music at St Petroc’s on Friday 3rd June.

The church, still decorated with bunting and flags, expressed thanks to God for the life, faith and devoted service of Queen Elizabeth II, on Sunday 5th June.

Hymns from the four nations of the UK were sung as well as what is thought to be the favourite hymn of Her Majesty: ‘Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; To his feet your tribute bring. Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, Evermore his praises sing. Alleluia, alleluia! Praise the everlasting King!’

Celebrations continued with Pimms and cake.

From babe in arms to those in their 90s, we remembered together the faith and faithfulness of Queen Elizabeth II and the birth of the Christian Church.

A message from Revd Paul Holley Holidays don’t seem to be a priority for people who live in Cornwall. Having spent too many years in cities, I am always looking forward to my next escape to the sun. But around here, I sense a different mindset. We enjoy what we have around us when we have the time.

The historic churches, museums, jail, railway, Old Library and hospitality services are looking to draw more tourists.

Do we invest to draw others, or to serve ourselves? It’s got to be a balance, though not an easy one. If all we do is to attract the wealthiest people possible, we find ourselves a little misbalanced. We are not that sort of town.

Bodmin has a lot to offer visitors. Those who run the town’s attractions are working hard to make the most of this. But they also plan to provide good entertainment and fun for holidays at home.

Knitting group strip for charity calendar!

Baring all for two worthwhile causes

A group of women from Bodmin recently whipped their kit off to create a charity calendar benefiting Cornwall Air Ambulance and the Mermaid Centre.

The group of ladies from Bodmin’s Knit & Natter group, based at Knit Happens, Travail Business Park on Normandy Way, wanted to do something brave yet empowering for charity – and after a light hearted conversation a charity calendar idea was born!

The group knitted their own props for the photoshoot, and had their hair and makeup done by local hairdresser Joanne Bilkey and Elizabeth Hopegood, the niece of Knit Happens owner Victoria Ellacott.

A Celebration of Community

M

usic festival PandaFest will be returning to Lanivet to throw a real feel-good community event this weekend, welcoming a diverse range of music and artists, local people, community groups and those from further afield to join in the celebrations.

Musician and co-organiser Jordan Collins has helped facilitate PandaFest since it first began back in his student days working part-time at the Lanivet Inn, helping landlord Rob with the coordination of the early events before it very quickly outgrew the pub.

The event was rebranded to ‘PandaFest’ and in 2019 the festival moved to its current location at Manor Mead in Lanivet.

With the festival growing over the years, it has also meant a lot more responsibility for the team.

The planning and preparation is very much a year-long project, all done in whatever spare time they get outside of work and other commitments.

PandaFest always supports local charities with its proceeds.

There is a diverse range of music and activities taking place over the two days this year, and those with a local postcode, NHS workers and members of the Cornwall RFU are able to grab discounted tickets.

With everything from rap and grime to Cornish folk, Americana Blues and DJ sets, the team at PandaFest really wanted to ensure everyone has something to look forward to this year.

Not only does the company help fundraise for the charity, it also supports with designing brochures, donating raffle prizes, and a group of colleagues from Proper Cornish even volunteered to help with the building of a sensory garden. In May of this year, two teams from Proper Cornish took part in the Lions Club of Bodmin Ten Tors Walk to raise money for Hugs.

In incredibly quick time, they walked 13 miles over moorland, up and down some of the highest hills in Cornwall raising an amazing £2,000 for Hugs which will go towards helping the Foundation to continue with their incredible work.

The Hugs Foundation Based in Bodmin, The Hugs Foundation is a rescue and rehabilitation charity for horses, ponies and other animals that have been mistreated, abandoned or unwanted. The charity also provides a range of support to people who struggle with various emotional, physical and mental health conditions.

The team at Hugs teach life skills, coping strategies and resilience for lifelong impact through therapeutic learning, animal assisted interventions and ecotherapy. Their services are delivered by a team of professionally qualified and experienced staff who do an amazing job to help those in need.

Chris Pauling, managing director at Proper Cornish, said: “It is just fantastic that we have such a wonderful facility as The Hugs Foundation right here in Bodmin. The work they do is just incredible.

“Over the last two years our fundraising effort for them has been particularly difficult due to the impact of Covid, however we hope to make up for that this year by having a bumper year of fundraising.

Come and join the ‘Turn the Tide’ tribe!

I

f ‘time and tide wait for no man’ then surely, we must act quickly to save our seas.

Local man and environmental activist, Andrew Frost, is showing how just one person or one family - can make a difference!

‘Turn the Tide Cornwall’ has now been going for almost five years. Andrew Frost, the action man behind the fun, alliterative title, began litter picking after a knee operation. During the recovery he realised he just couldn’t stay in and started cleaning the outdoor spaces that he loved, starting with Lantic Bay. Shocked at all the litter he found, he filmed his three-day clean-up which soon went viral online.

Andrew was then encouraged by his family to create an official online presence to create awareness through his clean-ups which he often does with his three children. Although he mainly sticks to beach cleans, Andrew will also tackle fly tipping in rural locations, rivers and roads.

With over 9,000 followers on Instagram, ‘Turn the Tide Cornwall’ has had mentions on BBC Spotlight, a shout-out on David Attenborough’s Blue Planet socials and last year, Andrew received the Surfers Against Sewage runner-up award for Plastic Free Hero. Andrew is extremely proactive and hands-on at cleaning but is limited by funds and time to expand the organisation.

Helping to keep the town tidy The BlueTiTs are the ‘Bodmin Tidy it Team’. The group started five years ago, initially gardening along Higher Bore Street. Now its objective is to make the whole of Bodmin an even more pleasant, colourful and tidy place to live.

The team star is ‘Great TiT’ Sarah Horne, an inspirational woman full of ideas and contacts. She has won support from the Lions Club and the Rotary Club who have donated litter picking equipment,

by Bodmin Town Council with the Parks Team and by Clean Cornwall, Biffa, Cornwall Council, local businesses and residents.

Since May 2021 Gilly has organised 21 litter picks and the collection of 247 bags of rubbish.

She also headed up the team who, with Cornwall Housing, transformed a large border at the Old Market Place.

Gilly said: “I took over leading litter picks a couple of years ago.

Now lots of people come along when they can to help keep Bodmin tidy, make new friends and enjoy a chat. It's a very rewarding occupation!” www.bodminlife.com

The team has planted daffodil bulbs (donated by Bodmin Town Council), sown wildflower seeds around the town (supported by Cormac) and worked with Making Space for Nature, planting bulbs in the Burgage Plots. Groups and individuals take care of many of the flower beds in town.

In preparation for last year’s Tour of Britain, the BlueTiTs partnered with the BoBCats (Bodmin Bicycle Craft and Art Trail) to fill the town with 100 decorated bikes and worked with Harry Maddox to facilitate the mural at Scarlett's Well and his Love Bodmin Land Art. Empty crisp packets are collected at the Shire Hall for recycling at Terracycle where they can also collect used stamps for the joint project with North Cornwall Talking Newspaper to raise money for RNIB. Now they are working with a project promoting a plasticfree Bodmin and are looking for a drop-off point in town for recycling empty medicine blister packs. BBQ goodness…

Seaview’s Smoky BBQ Sausages with Caramelised Onions

Ingredients: 1 pack of Seaview’s pork sausages 100g smoky BBQ sauce 100ml cider vinegar 2 garlic cloves, crushed 4 tbsp brown sugar (2 for the marinade and 2 for the caramelised onions) 1 large white onion, thinly sliced 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar

1. Mix the ingredients for the marinade in a bowl and season with salt and pepper, to taste.

2. Lay the sausages out on a dish or a tray and coat evenly with the bbq marinade, then leave for about half an hour so they can soak up all the flavour.

3. In a pan with some oil, add your onions with a bit of salt and fry off on a low heat for about half an hour until soft and golden.

4. Meanwhile, once your bbq is nice and hot, place the sausages on the grill. Keep turning and coating them in any leftover marinade until they are cooked through in the middle and are glazed and sticky.

5. Just before the onions are done, add the two leftover tablespoons of brown sugar and the balsamic vinegar, stirring until the sugar has dissolved and the onions look caramelised and glossy.

6. Serve the sausages in soft hotdog rolls and pile the caramelised onions on top, then place on a large dish for the family to dig into.

ach issue we are looking into one of the 17 United Nation’s goals to show how our community could be part of a global change. World leaders signed up to these 17 Sustainable Development Goals with the aim to deliver them by 2030..

In this edition, we focus on Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions

This is no insignificant goal set by the United Nations and our minds instinctively jump to the unjust war in Ukraine and the state of the UK government. However, the problem is so much bigger than that.

Did you know that in 2018, 70-million people had to flee injustice and war? Over 200 environmental activists are murdered each year and around one in four children in the world, under 5 are never officially recorded, depriving them of a legal identity.

To be honest, we have it good in the UK. Admittedly, the war in Europe is hitting our pocket hard, but we are relatively safe in our communities where we look after each other.

What difference can one person make?

Like so many things, this starts at home. Are you ‘at peace’ with your community, neighbours and colleagues?

Do you treat everyone with kindness, being equitable, open-minded, and accepting of all characteristics? Do you vote for local councillors, MPs, and commissioners when you can?

We all have the personal power to positively influence those in our community. Communities make up our nation and we do elect our representatives to lead in national matters. Our leaders, in turn, form the world community which can take on the global issues. It all starts with our attitude to influencing change.

How can a business make a difference?

Businesses have their own communities they can influence. It might be their industry group, the fellow high-street traders, even competitive marketplaces - they all have the power to work together to influence change. Primarily, they could ensure they have ethical supply chains and hurt warmongers, the unjust and the corrupt in their wallets.
