INNOVATING TOGETHER

Dear La Salle Community,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, our faculty, and staff, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for being a part of our Lasallian family. Over the last school year, La Salle College Preparatory has “rebounded” from the pandemic in ways I could have never imagined. Our school has emerged stronger than ever, better positioned to support and foster the academic, emotional, and spiritual growth of the students entrusted to our care.

As the school year comes to a close, I’d like to express my thanks and appreciation to our outgoing principal, Mr. Jamal Adams, for his service and contributions over the last two years to our La Salle community. Mr. Adams helped lead La Salle through our return to campus and hybrid learning environment while also serving as an

unyielding advocate for our Lasallian mission and Core Principles. We wish him well as he takes on his new role, where he will continue serving as a Catholic educational leader in the Los Angeles community.

While the 2022-2023 school year has come to a close, there has been much to celebrate! Our Academic Decathlon team secured world championship success at home and abroad, we launched two new Centers for Excellence, with the opening of our CARLOW Center for Medical Innovation and Center for Global Initiatives and Cultural Perspectives, our Girls Basketball Team secured their back-to-back CIF-SS Championship, we launched our Kohorst Field and Track Renovation Project, and much more. To say we are blessed is an understatement and I am truly honored to have the opportunity to lead our amazing

LANCER MAGAZINE 2

school and bear witness to these outstanding accomplishments, achievements, and initiatives.

Moving into the next school year, I am eager to begin the search for our new principal, with Mr. Ernest Siy, our current Dean of Students, serving as Interim Principal while we conduct a nationwide search to fill this vital position. Mr. Siy’s strong administrative experience and leadership, with the support of our academic leadership team, will serve as a steady hand while this important search takes place. I am also very excited about the many opportunities the upcoming school year will bring for our school, from upgraded facilities and programmatic enhancements, to the launch of our next Center for Excellence!

As my third year serving as school president comes to a close, I continue to be amazed at what we can accomplish as a community, rooted and centered with our Five Core Principles and the spirit of St. John Baptist de La Salle. On behalf of the La Salle Board of Trustees, our administration, faculty, and staff, I thank you for your continued partnership in the education of your children.

Sincerely,

3 FROM THE PRESIDENT

LET US REMEMBER; WE ARE IN THE HOLY PRESENCE OF GOD!

Hello Lancers!

Please accept my sincere gratitude to the La Salle College Preparatory community for welcoming me with open arms as the principal of this extraordinary institution for the last two years. It has been an incredible journey, full of excitement, challenge, and growth. I am honored to have had the privilege to be part of our esteemed faculty and staff to serve those entrusted to our care.

When I first arrived at this school, I was struck by the warm and welcoming atmosphere that pervaded every corner of the campus. The students were friendly and eager to learn, and the faculty and staff were dedicated to providing the best possible education to their charges. I knew immediately that I had found a special place and was excited to be a part of it.

Over the last two years, I have been constantly impressed by the level of commitment and dedication that I have seen from everyone in the school and community. From the parents who volunteer their time and resources to support our programs, to our educators who go above and beyond to ensure that our students succeed, to the students who give their all every day, this school truly is a special place where our Lasallian mission and charism is evident in all that we do.

I want to thank The Board of Trustees, President Perry Martin, and the rest of my administrative team. Working alongside so many talented and committed individuals has been my pleasure. Together, we have accomplished so much over the last two years. We have implemented new programs and initiatives to enhance student learning, engagement, and experience. We have worked tirelessly to ensure all students have the support they need to succeed, and going forward; we have positioned La Salle as the school of choice in the San Gabriel Valley and beyond.

I have also been impressed by the level of support and involvement that we have received from the wider community. Whether through financial donations, volunteer work, or simply showing up to cheer on our sports teams, our Lancers have benefited from this exceptional level of support and love. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to our school, students, faculty, and staff.

As I move on to new challenges and opportunities, I will always cherish the memories of my time here at this school. I will remember the smiles on the faces of our students as they learned and grew, the laughter and camaraderie among our faculty and staff, and the sense of community and belonging that permeated everything we did.

LANCER MAGAZINE 4

To the students, you are the reason we do what we do. You are the future and we believe in you wholeheartedly. I have seen firsthand the incredible potential that each one of you possesses, and I know that you will go on to do great things for your families, your communities, this nation, and the world.

In closing, I want to express my every confidence in my good friend, Mr. Ernest Siy, as he assumes the interim principal role. He is a dedicated educator who will continue to center our students and their experience in every action and decision he makes for this wonderful school community. Again, thank you to everyone for making my time here such a wonderful experience. I am grateful for all the opportunities I have had, and I will always carry the lessons I have learned here with me. I wish you all the best in the future, and I hope our paths will cross again someday.

St. John Baptist De La Salle, Pray for us.

Live Jesus in our Hearts, Forever.

Sincerely,

5 PRINCIPAL IDEAS

$1M GRANT FUNDS STUDENTS

What if the next time someone needed life-saving CPR or an anti-allergy shot, a La Salle College Preparatory student was the emergency medical provider? In La Salle’s initiative to offer students potential career pathways, the school has rapidly expanded its medical careers curriculum with the help of a $1 million grant from the Carrico Family Foundation.

The donation is the largest one-time gift in the high school’s nearly 70-year history and has provided funds for high tech equipment, instruction and a newly built CARLOW Center for Medical Innovation.

The CARLOW Center, a combined name honoring both the Carrico family and Maggie Carrico’s late husband Lowman, serves as the homebase for the school’s Medical Careers Pathway, a key portion of La Salle’s five-year Strategic Plan. One of the key tenets of the Strategic Plan is to expose students to career fields in meaningful ways, with the hope that by the time students choose their college programs, they’ve had a real-world look at their career of choice. Most students are asked at 18, 19, or 20 years old to choose a professional field of study, but how do they really know they’re studying something they’ll be happy doing for years to come?

Students who participate in the Medical Career Pathway receive hands on experience in labs up to three times a week; sometimes they work with tissue cultures, other times they strive to create prosthetics with 3-D printing technology and learn the intricacies of kinesiology with the 3-D Anatomage Table at the CARLOW Center.

Ms. Elizabeth Parga, both a science teacher and the center’s director, is most excited about the way the medical careers curriculum empowers students to make better informed decisions about their future. “Time is money in college and when you are wasting your time you are wasting your money. Some people graduate medical school and they realize [being a doctor is] not for them,” Parga said.

In the Medical Terminology courses Ms. Parga has taught, she’s witnessed students light up when they recognize that medical terms come from the roots of words they know in English and Spanish. For 15 year old sophomore Bella Zhang, who speaks English as a second language, the CARLOW Center and its medical program helps her in two ways: at the same time she’s learning about a variety of healthcare professions to pursue, she’s also practicing her English vocabulary and connecting those words to the medical terms she’s learning.

MEDICAL CAREER DREAMS

Access to a 3-D printer and medical classes at the Center fuels sophomore Mason Matsuo’s passion for science, from learning anatomy to robotics. He’s currently practicing his 3-D modeling skills by building a model of the CARLOW Center facilities, including the miniature details of desks and chairs. Once that project wraps, he hopes to help build a robotic limb and hand.

But the learning doesn’t stop at the CARLOW Center's facility. How do students gain medical experience without being a part of real-world medical situations like car wrecks and emergency room admissions? With virtual reality technology, students are exposed to a variety of scenarios in which they can practice their triage and life-saving skills.

Real-world skills also come from working side by side in the field with professionals. The CARLOW Center and Medical Career Pathways program has forged connections with organizations like City of Hope, where a group of students recently enrolled in paid internships to conduct research.

Interest in the Center grew among students even before it was fully built; students were curious as to what Ms. Parga put together this summer and they inquired about

participating in the Center’s programs. The CARLOW Center officially opened in October 2022 and La Salle has seen a robust response in interest among the student body.

Ninth grader Noah Leiva can attest to the medical program’s popularity. He wasted no time in turning in his application after a friend mentioned the program was almost full. “One of the reasons I came to La Salle was this new program,” Leiva said. “It’s been a fun journey and extra academic challenge, and a community of people that I’ve connected with,” he finished.

Ms. Parga highlights the growing popularity of the Medical Pathways program at La Salle, noting the uptick in participation in the Pasadena City College (PCC) classes offered to La Salle students. “The PCC dual enrollment classes began in the spring of 2022 and were barely reaching minimum enrollment and now we have a waitlist,” she said.

Both Ms. Parga and President Perry Martin feel the Center and the Medical Pathways program give La Salle, and its students, a huge advantage in the marketplace.

“They’re going to do [in high school] what most kids

7
STUDENTS

do in college in their freshman year. We’re offering college classes from PCC which [La Salle students] can take, towards a nursing degree while they’re in our school. I think when they present a skillset from four years here, every single college that has a premed curriculum will want to talk to them,” said Mr. Martin.

Mr. Martin and Ms. Parga foster a more experiential and self-driven style of learning through the Medical Pathways program. While tradiational classes might be taught with a book and students taking tests to demonstrate mastery, the approach at the CARLOW Center is quite different. Students in all grades, in any standing, can participate in the experiential labs and center’s medical coursework because all that is required is a thirst for knowledge. “My goal with learning is someone who wants to learn the material and master it and not (just aimed) at taking a test well. All we care about is that the student is engaged, learning, having fun, anyone can be a part of the program,” Ms. Parga explained.

The Medical Pathways Program is both a structured and semi-free flowing format, allowing students to guide their own learning. They begin by taking Introduction to Health and Medical Terminology courses, and can work toward a certificate of completion by taking other PCC health classes that speak to them. Students also participate in labs three times a week, sometimes choosing their own focus for the lab that day.

President Martin echoes the enthusiasm the students and Ms. Parga have shared about the program and CARLOW Center. “Quite frankly the Medical Pathway and CARLOW Center for Medical Innovation is fun and exciting. The learning is visual and kids don’t want to go home. We’re all looking for a place where work doesn’t feel like work – it’s innovative because we love doing it,” he said.

And when he thinks about the lasting legacy he hopes the CARLOW Center affords La Salle’s students, it’s a jumpstart on professions that merge a sense of service to others with an individual passion for science and health.

“Eventually they turn into wonderful healthcare providers. That’s what we’re all about. All about the future of how to connect students with a life lived that is happy and fulfilled and they’re doing exactly what they want to do with their lives,” he says.

A SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM, IN TRUE LA SALLE FASHION

Each year that La Salle welcomes students through its doors, the school walks a delicate tightrope; it is constantly balancing its fundraising needs with its mission to grant quality education to all, including those lacking the financial means to access one independently.

One core way La Salle gives the gift of high quality education to students is through its cornerstone program, the San Miguel Scholarship.

The work of former president Dr. Richard Gray, who passed away in 2021, remains throughout the fiber of La Salle, from the part he played in overseeing construction of Kohorst Field, to the STEAM laboratory and Blakeslee Learning Commons on campus. But Dr. Gray is perhaps most well remembered for creating the San Miguel Scholarship program in 2001. To date, 144 San Miguel Scholars have graduated from the school, fulfilling the Christian Brothers’ vision of serving the impoverished and opening doors for those most in need. When current school president Perry Martin reflects on the legacy of Dr. Gray’s work at La Salle, he mentions that “no initiative was more important to Dr. Gray than the San Miguel program.”

The program offers scholarships to academically deserving students whose families live at or below the federal poverty line. Those granted the scholarship represent approximately 5% of the student body each year, offering students a comprehensive La Salle

experience, covering tuition for all four years and including funds for college visits, textbooks, devices, Prom, athletics, and uniforms.

The scholarship relies on the support of generous donors throughout the school community. Some like Leigh and Harry Olivar have been involved with La Salle for years. Their son David Jackson attended from 2008 to 2012; their second La Salle student Harry Olivar III graduated in 2021.

Leigh and Harry have served the school in different capacities; Leigh, a former commercial building designer for Coca-Cola, served on the Board of Regents and was instrumental in the school’s rebranding in 2017 and 2018. Her husband, Harry, an attorney, currently serves as a memeber of the Board of Trustees. The Olivars have hosted several school-related gatherings at their home and have donated generously to the Dr. Richard Gray Memorial - San Miguel Scholarship Fund over the years.

With the many ways one can give back to the school, why focus on donating specifically to a fund for the San Miguel scholarships? It starts with Dr. Gray: “Dr. Gray always shared that La Salle’s scholarship and financial aid programs set us apart from other schools and establish our legacy for the future,” Leigh noted.

Over the years, the Olivars have been happy to welcome students into their home, like their son David’s close friend and San Miguel Scholar Mariana Henry ’12, who

9

they think of as an extended family member. Discussing the values La Salle imparts to its students, Leigh and Harry note that La Salle develops caring, good people. “I was just so happy to have La Salle students in my living room including over Christmas time,” Leigh says. Harry beams as he describes Mariana’s use of La Salle’s quality education to launch herself into college at UC Davis, and graduate programs at Yale and Dartmouth. They have seen firsthand the opportunities a Lasallian education can open to ambitious, bright people from all walks of life.

“Mariana, to me, exemplified the benefits of La Salle and the joy of knowing someone like her,” adds Leigh. “I saw a lot of dedication and kindness and just a wonderful human we were privileged to know in our family,” she adds.

assistance to attend the school; they view this as a benefit to the La Salle community. “We like that the student body is representative of the community and when your children go to La Salle, they are with a diverse group of students,” the couple said.

The school has a place in their heart as well, given their children’s experience. Their son David “called it the school of heaven,” Leigh says. “He was involved in all the activities, excelling in academics, clubs, drama, and sports like track and water polo. I had to beg him to come home at the end of the school day,” she laughs.

When friends ask Leigh why she is such an ardent ambassador of La Salle, she insists that her ease in promoting the school stems from the caring community and students she has gotten to know over the years.

For Mariana Henry, the feeling she has for the Olivars is mutual. She considers their son David like a brother and describes Leigh and Harry as caring, generous people who are invested in La Salle students’ education.

Looking back, Mariana feels La Salle ingrained in her the importance of being of service, counting it as one of the driving forces behind her desire to train as a medical doctor. She notes that La Salle anatomy class lit a passion within her for the nutrition and medical fields. After earning a Masters degree at Yale in Chronic Epidemiology, Mariana is now at Dartmouth medical school and thinks she will specialize in internal medicine.

For Mariana, one of the gifts of attending La Salle on the San Miguel Scholarship was the feeling that she belonged there. “Being a San Miguel Scholar at La Salle was indicative of feeling supported there. It relieved stressors of being able to afford books and being involved in sports,” she says.

The Olivars are aware that up to 35% of the student body at La Salle receive some form of financial

“At La Salle, it is a goal to graduate good people,” she explains. “The school’s principles are not just words on the page; the people who attend the school exemplify its principles.”

Their youngest son Harry echoes that sentiment; when he was weighing his options of which high school to attend, he felt something special at La Salle, “Those are the kindest people I have ever been around,” he said.

La Salle recognizes those donors who have restricted their contributions of $1,000.00+ to the School’s Endowment Funds or included La Salle in their estate planning through one of a number of Planned Giving instruments including gift annuities, life insurance, charitable remainder trusts, lead trusts and bequests. These donors are honored as members of the Saint Benilde Society. Similar to the visionary actions of Brother Celestine, the founding principal of La Salle High School, the support of these individuals will help secure the perpetuity of the Mission and Philosophy of La Salle College Preparatory for generations.

Catching Up With San Miguel Scholarship Recipients

We're so proud of our San Miguel Scholars! We caught up with a few to learn about what they're up to.

La Salle Class of 2017

Santa Clara University

Looking back at your time at La Salle, how do you feel about being a recipient of the San Miguel Scholarship?

I would not be where I am today had it not been for the San Miguel scholarship. My family would not have had the money to put me in a school, particularly of the caliber that La Salle is. The lack of financial burden to pursue education is a huge gift. It helped with all the little things - uniforms, dance tickets, and textbooks. I never felt I was at a disadvantage because of my financial background. I was so much more likely to pursue things and try things because my parents weren’t going to be burdened by this. I didn’t waste a single opportunity. I joined everything I could, I did theater all four years. The ability to be involved was very special and I received a full scholarship to college, and I know my time at La Salle set me up for that. The lack of financial burden that was there was HUGE and I was able to pursue more than I would have in other circumstances. Attending La Salle was instrumental in getting me to where I am today. At Santa Clara I was heavily involved with the professional business fraternity on campus and La Salle prepared me to participate in the fraternity with all the leadership opportunities I had in high school.

ROCKY VALIENTE

La Salle Class of 2011

University of Southern California

Which of La Salle’s five pillars speak to you the most? Is there one pillar that you strive to live out in your life? Faith in the presence of God: In every avenue of life I have been challenged to extend patience and love in the face of uncertainty. My faith in God has helped expand my capacity to trust and give in the midst of ambiguity which has inspired people around me to give more. This spirit of giving is contagious and when we are all encouraged to give more of ourselves -- miraculous things are accomplished. For me, the spirit of giving is largely instilled by my faith in God. I love coming into a home and leaving it better than when I entered. I strive to model my entire life through this framework.

KATELYN STONE

La Salle Class of 2015

University of California, Santa Cruz

Are there any ways that you wish to give back to your own community or the Lasallian community? I just spent 9 months putting together a Middle School Hackathon at my company for underrepresented students to expose the younger generation to STEM and give them an opportunity to grow their interest in tech. These are

LANCER MAGAZINE 30

the ways I wish to give back. It is so important to pay it forward to give others the opportunity I was given in order to succeed. This opens so many doors for so many students. When you provide the tools for the younger generation, you will be shocked to see how smart and hardworking they are when they get the chance to show their skill set and grow in it. I will continue to give back through volunteer work.

meant that I had access to La Salle and it opened a lot of doors for me, kind of let me know - it was indicative that I would be supported at La Salle. Gave me a sense of belonging at the school as well. It relieved the stress of being able to afford books and going to the sports events. It truly relieved a lot of stress and made opportunities available to me.

PHOEBE NABUA

La Salle Class of 2019

Pennsylvania State University

How has attending La Salle impacted your life so far? The service opportunities at La Salle were integral to me. I was committed to serving my community and continued that through college. I joined a service sorority and continued serving. That’s how it impacted me.

San Miguel Scholarship

Established in 2004, the San Miguel Scholarship, named in honor of the first American Lasallian Saint, is awarded annually to up to seven incoming freshmen. This full-tuition scholarship is offered to students of academic promise whose family income puts them at or below the federal poverty line.

JUAN GONZALEZ

La Salle Class of 2011

University of San Francisco

Looking back at your time at La Salle, how do you feel about being a recipient of the San Miguel Scholarship? I’m pretty blessed to have received it. I really appreciate the opportunities it gave me. It pushed me to step up and provided a good learning environment. I got to take advantage of having a college prep school education to give me the tools to think ahead. I truly appreciate having it.

The scholarship is full-tuition for four years, including waivers of all textbooks, fees, and uniforms, provided the student maintains an acceptable level of academic achievement, contributes in appropriate ways to the school community, and demonstrates financial need on an annual basis.

Your gift to the San Miguel Scholarship Fund helps students like Nathan, Renee and Shirley-students who otherwise would not have been afforded the opportunity to attend La Salle and receive a Lasallian education. Although a lot has changed at La Salle since we first opened in 1956, the collective belief that a new generation of Lancers benefit when loyal alumni come together remains.

MARIANA HENRY

La Salle Class of 2012

UC Davis, Yale University, Dartmouth School of Medicine

Looking back at your time at La Salle, how do you feel about being a recipient of the San Miguel Scholarship? I mean, the San Miguel Scholarship

Gifts to the Pat Bonacci, AFSC Endowed Scholarship Fund, the Annie Johnston Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund, and the newly established Dr. Richard Gray Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund all support San Miguel Scholars. So whether you direct your gift to a named San Miguel Scholarship or the fund, in general, you are making an impact.

“Academic Decathlon has been an eye opening experience and one where I’ve grown not only as a student, but as a person. I went on a wonderful trip with some of my closest friends and phenomenal mentors, and winning the competition was only the cherry on top to an adventure that will stick with me for the rest of my life.”

- Arthur Camara, Junior, Class of 2024 World Scholar’s Cup - Global Round 2022 - Prague, Czechia

DECATHLON COMPETES ON THE GLOBAL STAGE

The World Scholar’s Cup is an academic competition where scholars from around the world gather to compete in a series of tests and debates to prove their knowledge on the year’s theme. This year’s theme, “A World Re-Renewed”, challenged the scholars on facts that ranged from classic literature and historical events to wind turbines and songs about volcanoes. Should a team succeed at the regional round, La Salle's case, Los Angeles, they are able to advance to the Global Round where they will compete against 500 international students representing 20 different countries.

La Salle was fortunate enough to send nine students from its Academic Decathlon team to compete against scholars from around the world at this year's Global Round in Prague, Czechia. The team of Isaac “Zacky” Culver ’23, Tomás Posada-Awad ’23, and Andrew Lai ’23 all agree that this was, “an opportunity of a lifetime to showcase [their] skills and see the world from a different point of view.” Meanwhile, the team of Katareena Roska ’24, Matthew Tesoro ’24, and Arthur Camara ’24 saw this as a “chance to prove how their hard work and perseverance in learning the material would pay-off at the global round.” Meizha Candelaria ’23, Aidan Suyapto ’23, and Adrian Kong ’23 wanted to take advantage of being in Prague by learning about the “rich history and culture of the city and adapt [their] thirst for knowledge and curiosity into each test [they] took during the competition.” While each team walked into the competition with a different mindset, their collective goal remained the same - to do their best at representing La Salle in competition and in community with schools from around the world.

The scholars spent two days in competition where each test earned them points on both an individual and team level. The first day

consisted of team debates, the “Scholar’s Challenge” (a series of tests in various subjects), and a writing challenge. The second day of competition was focused on the Scholar’s Bowl, where all teams in each delegation gather together for a series of multiple choice questions worth varying points that will later be applied to the team score, in essence, a game of Kahoot. However, this gathering of scholars was not just about academics and testing their knowledge on the material. Amidst the competition, the World Scholar’s Cup also provided opportunities for cultural exchange amongst the students.

Recognizing that this is more than just an opportunity to see who is the smartest decathlete in the room, the scholars were able to interact and learn from each other’s cultures and backgrounds. There were multiple sponsored events and engagements that the scholars participated in, such as the Culture Fair, Scholar’s Social, and Scholar’s Ball. From cruising down the Vltava River over dinner to exchanging bracelets and candy from their respective countries to dancing the night away to songs in different languages, our students had every opportunity to interact and mingle with students from Israel, Turkey, Kenya, Slovenia, and so many more places. Reflecting on this experience, Camara said, “to put it plainly, [this] was the opening of a whole new universe for us.” Each student walked away with a new friend and a better understanding of the world they live in.

While learning about the cultures of the other scholars in attendance was both fun and eye-opening, it was important that our La Salle students also got to explore and learn about the history and culture of Prague. Therefore, on their day off, the students went on an excursion to visit the historical landmarks and sites of the city.

LANCER MAGAZINE 34

Their first stop was the Strahov Monastery, where they received a VIP tour of the Theological and Philosophical Halls that contained over 200,000 books that dated back to the mid-17th century. With ornate ceilings and baroque style architecture, the students were left speechless in a room filled with stories of a time passed. From there, they visited the Petrin Tower, also known as the Prague Eiffel Tower. Modeled after the famous one in Paris, France, this tower stands at the same height (if you include the height above sea level) and afforded the students an opportunity to climb to the top and see over the entire city of Prague in every direction. Gazing over every inch of the town, each student kept pointing to places they had visited over the past week. Then, as they made their trek to the Prague Castle and Cathedral, the tour guide provided them with a brief history of the city and culture of not just Prague, but of the Czech Republic as a whole. While at Prague Castle, the students were beyond ecstatic when they saw the places they learned about in their AP European History Textbooks, such as the defenestration of Prague and the window that began the 30 years war. It was truly an unforgettable experience.

After a week of competition, cultural discovery, and exchange, our students headed to the Dlabacov Theater one last time for the award ceremony. Our Lancer scholars did exceptionally well with each student earning multiple silver and gold medals, as well as a few trophies.

All three teams finished in the top 10, with Aidan Suyapto ’23, Adrian Kong ’23, and Meizha Candelaria ’23 finishing in tenth, Arthur Camara ’24, Katareena Roska ’24, and Matthew Tesoro ’24 finishing in fifth place, and Zacky Culver ’23, Tomas Posada-Awad ’23, and Andrew Lai ’23 finishing in second place in the overall competition.

countries. Over the span of one week, the team of Isaac “Zacky” Culver ’23, Tomás Posada-Awad ’23, and Andrew Lai ’23 and the team of Arthur Camara ’24, Katareena Roska ’24, and Matthew Tesoro ’23, put in their best efforts with the hopes of scoring the highest in each section of the competition. Similar to the Global Round in Prague, the scholars spent two days in the heat of individual subject tests known as the “Scholar’s Challenge”, team debates, Collaborative Writing and finally, the Kahoot style “Scholar’s Bowl”.

While results were being tabulated, scholars were encouraged to participate in a variety of events hosted by the World Scholar’s Cup Organization, such as the Culture Fair, Scholar’s Social, and Scholar’s Ball. While there were some familiar faces from delegations that also competed in Prague, there were plenty of new friendships that were formed throughout the course of these events. Our La Salle students befriended students from places such as Thailand, Australia, England, the United Arab Emirates. Roska noted, “We thought our world opened up in Prague, but that was just the beginning.” Although they arrived in New Haven seeing these students as their competition, they left with newfound friendships and an understanding of new cultures and customs they were not familiar with before.

The last day of the trip was filled with memorable moments from the Award Ceremony as the hard work and talents of these six students truly became known. We had many notable wins to mention: Arthur Camara ’24, did the impossible and won the individual title, which made him the first-ever American scholar to win the overall title in the 15 years of the World Scholar’s Cup. Additionally, Camara also won the inaugural Jac Kohr Award for finishing first in the multiple choice test. Tomas Posada-Award ’23 finished 9th in debate, and

Individually, our scholars also had tremendous success. In addition to being the Top Writer, Arthur claimed first place in the overall competition (the first to do so from the United States of America). Within the multiple-choice tests, our Lancers won a whopping 48 individual medals, with Meizha being tops in Art/Music, Zacky in Science, and Arthur in both Social Studies and Literature/Media. In total, the Lancers walked away from the Global Round of the World Scholars Cup with 93 medals and 12 trophies. Based on their triumphant victories, each team secured a place to compete at the Tournament of Champions at Yale in New Haven, Connecticut in November of 2022. Of the three teams, the top two were selected to move forward.

This final round of the World Scholar’s Cup brings together qualifying teams of all the global rounds around the world. Six La Salle students competed against over 1,400 students from at least 40 different

Kat Roska ’24 finished 5th in writing. Our senior trio of Zacky Culver, Tomas Posada-Awad, and Andrew Lai finished in an incredible second place, while our other trio team of juniors, Arthur Camara, Kat Roska, and Matthew Tesoro, finished in overall seventh place in the competition. In total, La Salle walked away from the tournament of champions with a total of 91 medals!

Coach of the Year, Mr. John Erb states, “I couldn’t be more proud of these students and what they have accomplished. Coaching them through this season was an incredible experience and I am so happy for them and what they achieved. We did it!”

While this season of the World Scholar’s Cup has come to an end, these students are forever bonded in their journey, memories, and successes.

PLANTING TOMATOES, SERVICE AND A SENSE OF COMMUNITY

Teachers and students at La Salle have found another way to learn and it’s happening in a community garden built on campus, in a spot that used to house bleachers and the baseball field.

The suggestion of building a community garden had bounced around La Salle for years, but when COVID forced everyone home, students in the Eco-Committee club finally kickstarted the project in January of 2021.

Teachers Rand Laird and Kate Williams served as advisors for the students, guiding them in coordinating volunteer shifts, tilling soil, building garden boxes and planting seeds. Both teachers witnessed a sense of community blossom as students labored to work the soil, make compost and sow their first plants together. “This project was a time and space for healing,” Mrs. Williams said. “The students were able to interact with each other for the first time in months in person (socially distanced of course), and create something from the ground up that could be used for years after graduation,” she added. Mr. Laird made one thing clear to the students - he would help lead the effort in building and setting the garden up, but the students would need to keep it going, emphasizing that the garden would be a community asset.

The project presented a number of opportunities for learning. Mr. Laird used a technique called square foot

gardening, so the students learned how to leverage a one foot by one foot plot to grow the same amount of produce as would ordinarily take up to eight feet to grow. Given Pasadena’s semi-arid Mediterranean climate, water is precious, so students also learned that square foot gardening allows for the most efficient use of water to produce edible crops.

Moments of laughter and much needed lightheartedness punctuated the building process as students and teachers worked the soil. “There were a few lightbulb moments when our students used power tools for the first time,” Mrs. Williams recounts laughing. “I wanted to be sure our girls especially felt confident in the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) aspects of the project,” she added.

From an environmental science and stewardship perspective, students learned about the importance of crop rotation as a sustainable model for creating healthy soil. What one plant takes from the ground, another type of crop will replenish in its place. Students also learned that partnering fragrant plants like onions, marigolds and geraniums with crops can keep insect invaders at bay, preserving tomatoes and greens for human consumption. Even better, the garden is a welcoming bio-diverse home for local butterfly and insect populations, which in turn, make the garden healthier over time.

LANCER MAGAZINE 38

To date, students have grown carrots and several kinds of tomatoes like Beefhouse, Cherry and Roma varieties. They’ve also grown Swiss Chard, collard greens and arugula, okra, peas, beans, radishes, strawberries, herbs, cilantro, chives and parsley.

The garden has been as educational for students as it has been an opportunity to serve each other and the environment. “There was a collective effort [in building the garden] and reaping the rewards that builds a community, and teaches kids the skill for the future. There’s a sense of service and that we’re protecting something bigger than us, by producing our own food right at our back door,” he said.

Science teacher Ms. Mullen knows the garden has impacted her students for the better. They delight when they realize they are welcome to pick a carrot and eat it or take it home for dinner. Sometimes her students ask for meditative time in the space. "Ms. Mullen we just need to sit in the garden for 20 minutes,” a student told her once.

The future of the garden is in question, Ms. Mullen said, because it sits on space that might be used for another project as a part of the school’s Strategic Plan. But she feels the garden will exist in one way or another on La Salle’s campus because of all the good she’s seen come from it. “I want to keep a space of the garden for the environmental science class. A place where students can get their hands in the dirt, experience the growing [process] and learn to cook something new. Some of them never want to eat chard again but some of them love it,” she said.

On December 3rd, alumni volunteers along with family members and friends wrapped 200+ presents that were purchased with alumni donations for the needy families the Alumni Association adopted for the holidays in connection with La Salle’s annual Adopt A Family program. The Wrapping Party took place in the atrium and Dining Hall with plenty of coffee, hot chocolate and holiday cheer. Santa was even on hand for pictures with alumni and their kids and pets.

Many thanks to the 100+ alumni donors who donated over $11,000 to the cause. Due to the success of the fundraising campaign we were able to support 2 families from Hathaway-Sycamores in Pasadena, 8 families from the Salvation Army (including one large family of 8), and 10 military families from Camp Pendleton.

Thank you to all who participated to make this an unforgettable Christmas for those in need.

We hope to see you at our 2023 Wrapping Party taking place on Saturday, December 2nd from 10am-12pm!

Editor’s Note: Below is an interview between David Lam, a La Salle donor, parent and member of the Board of Regents – and school officials, Major Gift Consultant Jon Keates and President Perry Martin; their questions are labeled as La Salle in the interview that follows. The interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.

Mr. David Lam, P'08, P'09 has donated over $250,000 to La Salle and the school’s amphitheater has been newly named after him and his two sons who graduated from the school in ’08 and ’09. He founded La Salle’s International Recruitment Initiative and was a Crystal Ball Honoree.

He has a connection to La Salle that began many years ago, beginning with his own education at a Lasallian school in Hong Kong. Upon graduation, he moved to the States with just two suitcases, chasing the American Dream, with the goal of pursuing an education and a life of better opportunities. In an effort to lessen his schooling’s financial burden on his parents, he took up to 24 credits a college semester so he could graduate on an expedited timeline. He graduated with a major in chemistry, eventually became an industrial engineer, a garment salesman and VP of a company selling medical devices throughout Asia. He’s contributed heavily to the San Miguel Scholarship program and below he speaks with Major Gift Consultant Jon Keates and President Perry Martin about

INTERVIEW WITH DAVID LAM, Major Donor to the San Miguel Scholarship

why he’s supported the school and the scholarship in particular.

La Salle: You know that one of the signature programs that Dr. Richard Gray initiated is the San Miguel program. What are your thoughts about the San Miguel program and what has it meant to you and, did it touch the boys (David’s children) Chris and Matt in any way?

David Lam: At first, we didn’t know about the program when we first joined the school, we didn’t know about it or what it was about. It’s when I got into the Regents that I learned what it was about and when I heard about it, I fully endorsed it. Because I read things that education is the only vehicle to break this poverty cycle. We allow and support the less privileged an opportunity for education and hopefully you can go to school and could go to college later on. And when they graduate you get a better job than flipping burgers at McDonald’s.

That’s why I feel that [I am] an example. I came to this country with two suitcases… I studied and worked hard. And I just feel that if we give a chance to other kids, you know, let them create their own future, give them a chance. So I’m a hundred percent behind this program, right?

LANCER MAGAZINE 50

La Salle: After Richard Gray’s departure you learned about the establishment of the Richard Gray Memorial scholarship to create an endowment for the San Miguel program. What led you to make a significant gift to help underwrite and support that program?

going to do this, how were you coming to support? And I said, you can spread [a donation] over a couple of years to pay for it.’

La Salle: The school's operation is centered around the Five Core Principles. These principles focus on the areas of quality education, inclusivity, social justice, faith, and respect. You exemplify many of these qualities. What would you describe as the foundation for humility and gratefulness?

David Lam: And when you say that I just feel that I went through a lot to get to where I am today. So I learned through the hard way, and I know what it is like when you are struggling. When you are not doing well, when you’re trying to make ends meet. So I never forget the past. So I always think if one day I am successful, I want to be in a position to help all of the kids. That’s why I’m so supportive of this San Miguel program. If nothing else the San Miguel program would help the kids and open doors in the future. The rest of them, it’s up to them [students] and what they want to do. You know it’s all on the individual, if your heart desires, you can go far.

David Lam: Richard loved the school, loved the kids and all. So when I heard about this endowment, I say, well, what is more real? What can I do to help to support this program?

So I decided, okay if I want to support this I really want to make a big bang that hopefully I can help the program gain momentum and to get other people involved.

La Salle: And my sense is you would encourage others who are involved with La Salle to support this endowed scholarship program, right?

David Lam: Yeah some donors came to me and say ’they heard I’m going to do this, what you’re doing.’ And I say ’I’m

La Salle: What you’ve been through with the school, how would you ask them to follow in your footsteps? So what if you were to be talking to other people, what would you say to them?

David Lam: I would say that believe in what you’re doing. And when you are successful, think back to your [beginning] and try and support them [the students]. Give the other kids a chance to be successful.

La Salle College Preparatory is grateful for Mr. David Lam's support for our school and most especially the San Miguel Scholarship Program!

Makenzie (Pedrotti) Chronopoulos ’07 started playing beach soccer after she graduated from college in 2011 and it quickly became a huge passion of hers. She played in domestic tournaments across the country but at that time there was no US women’s national beach soccer team. They had a men’s team so she made an effort to push for a women’s side. In 2019, US Soccer agreed to field a women’s side but Makenzie was pregnant with her third child. She stepped away from the sport for a few years to raise her family and came back just in time to be called into the first domestic US Women’s National Team Training Camp which was held in August 2022 at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center. Makenzie made the team and traveled to Paraguay in September to represent the US Women’s Beach Soccer National Team. The team is now focused on the ANOC World Beach Games in Bali which take place this summer. Makenzie is excited for the opportunity to be called in again to represent her country and says none of this would be possible without the support of her family.

Tyler Artis ’15 is the founder and creator of SHARE A SMILE, LLC. What began as a personal challenge eventually developed into a full-fledged business. His goal was to have a positive impact on one person, every day, simply by sharing a smile. He invited family and friends to take part in the challenge and even designed stickers with the saying on them as a fun way to remind people of the call to action. Well, the demand for the stickers grew to a level that Tyler knew could have an even larger impact. He wanted to do more to spread kindness and amplify the important message of “share a smile.” He has since launched a line of inspirational apparel with plans to include more items in the near future. THE LANCER CHALLENGE

La Salle ended fiscal year 2022 with an alumni giving participation rate of 10.5%. We are most grateful for the 751 alumni donors who put alumni giving over the top with the largest number of alumni donors in school history! Our goal this fiscal year was to reach 10.75% by June 30, 2023, and to see which graduating class coms out on top in the Lancer Challenge.

WHAT IS THE LANCER CHALLENGE?

A giving competition that challenges each class to increase the number of donors who contribute to La Salle over the fiscal year (July 1, 2022-June 30, 2023).

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Every gift matters. No gift is too small to count for your class. The competition is based on the number of alums from each class who give, not the dollar amount.

*All tax-deductible gifts made to La Salle will impact your class participation scoree.

HOW DO YOU MAKE A GIFT?

There are several ways to make a gift and boost your class’ standing:

1. Give online at www.lasallehs.org/annualfund.

2. Mail your gift. Checks made payable to “La Salle College Prep”.

3. Call 626.696.4362 to make your gift over the phone.
