There’s been a lot of talk lately about Project Marvel— the proposed Spurs arena and entertainment district that could cost $3.5 to $4 billion when all the pieces are added up (new arena, convention center expansion, Alamodome upgrades, hotel, housing, and retail). Spurs have committed at least $500 million, and they say they’ll cover overruns. The city of San Antonio will be responsible for up to $489 million, funded by bonds and reinvested taxes. Bexar County will be responsible for Up to $311 million if voters approve a hotel and rental car tax increase this November. Consultants estimate $9.4 billion in economic impact over 30 years, mostly from convention, hotel, and housing growth. That comes out to about $313 million a year—numbers that look great on paper. The city faces a $150 million budget shortfall by 2026. Critics worry Project Marvel will take dollars away from housing, transit, and city services. Independent economists say the projections may be too optimistic, especially since many studies were funded by Spursconnected firms. Some community groups feel the process has been rushed and public input hasn’t been taken seriously. Should San Antonio approve Project Marvel now, hoping it revitalizes downtown and boosts tourism? Or should the city wait to see what happens to the economy first, making sure basic needs are funded before committing billions to a sports and entertainment project? Jose Carrasquillo: “I don’t get it, they said the taxpayers will not pay anything. No? Car rental taxes are paid by the taxpayer, us . I use car rental so I’m going to be paying a higher tax rate. And downtown is too crowded to move away from downtown. What’s wrong with the Frost Center? Just saying”
Herb Rockman: “I haven't studied and don't have enough information to have a truly educated opinion on it. However, while the convention center had outlived its usefulness and needed to be replaced, the Alamodome and the AT&T Center never lived up to promises made when they were built, and I have doubts that this new arena will either. Local government and contractors (regardless of political affiliation), have a long history of graft and kickbacks. I also question how much money will actually go into our local economy, contractors may be from out of the area, NBA keeps a lot of money generated by Spurs, and any permanent new jobs will be primarily menial.”
Roger Resendez: “In my opinion Th, SPURS suck. They know they are costing the city and tax payers money. The city already built them two places to call home. But that’s not good enough. Maybe bring home some championship trophies like they used to. But what do they care about? Build them another and then that one won’t be good enough.”
Kenneth Mumma: “Why should we fear their threats... what will they want after the next 15 years... let Austin have them.”
Reggie Brown: “This city is the 7 largest city in the country and we are not even close to being able to be called that but by population we are we need to get out of the simple mindset”

Jeff Hull: “Project Marvel and the City is promising the same thing they did with the Alamodome and look how that turned out. They still ended up building the now Frost Bank Center. Businesses did not pop up all over the Eastside like promised. The Alamodome is not used for at least half of the year. Major National Acts/bands are skipping San Antonio for Austin. Only one major college football game is played at the Alamodome each year. Not to mention how overpriced it is to go to such a venue. Building a new Spurs arena will only end up costing the taxpayer and local citizens even more just to attend an event. Prices will rise at other venues like the Frost Bank Center. They say it won't
cost the taxpayers but who's gonna flip for the highway/road expansion that is going to be needed? Traffic is already horrible downtown in that area. Especially with all the current construction downtown in that area that has now been going on for years. Causing many small businesses to either lose money or close. . .It's not a good idea.”

Propuesta Número 1 (SJR 59)
La SJR 59 propone una enmienda constitucional para establecer dos fondos especiales en la tesorería del estado para proporcionar una fuente dedicada de fondos para proyectos de capital y compras de equipos relacionados con programas educativos ofrecidos por el Sistema de Universidades Técnicas del Estado de Texas (TSTC). La enmienda propuesta requiere que el contralor de cuentas públicas de Texas administre los fondos, que incluye administrar cualquier actividad de inversión relacionada con los fondos y facilitar su disponibilidad para ser utilizados por el Sistema TSTC. La enmienda propuesta autoriza a la Junta de Regentes del Sistema TSTC a utilizar los montos distribuidos por el Contralor al fondo disponible para adquirir terrenos, construir y equipar edificios y otras mejoras permanentes, hacer reparaciones y restauraciones importantes de edificios u otras mejoras permanentes, adquirir bienes de capital, adquirir libros y materiales de bibliotecas, pagar el capital y los intereses adeudados sobre cualquier bono o pagaré utilizado para financiar mejoras permanentes, o para cualquier otro propósito autorizado por la ley. De conformidad con la enmienda propuesta, el Sistema TSTC no podría usar los fondos asignados para construir, equipar, reparar o rehabilitar edificios u otras mejoras permanentes que se utilizarán para el atletismo intercolegial o empresas auxiliares.

La SJR 18 propone una enmienda constitucional la cual prohíbe la imposición de un impuesto sobre las ganancias de capital realizadas o no realizadas de un individuo, familia, patrimonio o fideicomiso. Esta prohibición incluiría un impuesto sobre la venta o transferencia de un activo de capital que deba ser pagado por un individuo, familia, patrimonio o fideicomiso que venda o transfiera el activo. La enmienda propuesta no prohibiría la imposición o cambio en la tasa de un impuesto ad valorem sobre la propiedad; un impuesto sobre las ventas de bienes o servicios; o un impuesto sobre el uso en el almacenamiento, uso u otro consumo en este estado de bienes o servicios.

Propuesta Número 3
(SJR 5)
La SJR 5 propone una enmienda constitucional para exigir la denegación de la libertad bajo fianza en determinadas circunstancias a las personas acusadas de ciertos delitos sancionables como delito grave. La enmienda propuesta se aplicaría únicamente a una persona acusada de cometer uno o más de los siguientes delitos: asesinato; asesinato capital; agresión agravada si la persona causó graves lesiones corporales a la otra persona , según lo define la ley, o la persona utilizó un arma de fuego, maza, cuchillo o arma explosiva, según define esos términos la ley, durante la comisión de la agresión; secuestro agravado; robo agravado; agresión sexual agravada; indecencia con un niño; tráfico de personas; o tráfico continuo de personas. Según la enmienda propuesta, una persona acusada de cometer uno o más de estos delitos se le negará la libertad bajo fianza en espera de juicio si el abogado que representa al estado demuestra por preponderancia de la evidencia que el otorgamiento de dicha fianza sería insuficiente para prevenir razonablemente la no comparecencia voluntaria de la persona ante el tribunal; o el abogado que representa al estado demuestra con pruebas claras y convincentes que la concesión de la fianza es insuficiente para garantizar razonablemente la seguridad de la comunidad, la aplicación de la ley y la víctima del presunto delito. Un juez o magistrado que concede la libertad bajo fianza a una persona acusada de uno o más de estos delitos, de acuerdo con lo dispuesto en la enmienda propuesta, deberá fijar la fianza e imponer las condiciones de liberación necesarias solo para prevenir razonablemente la no comparecencia voluntaria de la persona ante el tribunal y garantizar la seguridad de la comunidad, la aplicación de la ley y la víctima del presunto delito. El juez o magistrado también deberán preparar una orden escrita que incluya determinaciones de hecho y una declaración en la cual se explicará la justificación para la concesión de la fianza. La enmienda propuesta específica que no podrá interpretarse en el sentido de limitar ningún derecho que una persona tenga, de acuerdo con lo dispuesto en otra ley, a impugnar una denegación de libertad bajo fianza o a impugnar el monto de la fianza fijada por un juez o magistrado o a exigir cualquier prueba testimonial antes de que un juez o magistrado tome una decisión sobre la libertad bajo fianza con respecto a una persona a la que se le aplicaría la enmienda. Un juez o magistrado que determine
si existe una preponderancia de la evidencia o evidencia clara y convincente, de acuerdo con lo dispuesto en la enmienda propuesta, deberá considerar la probabilidad de que la persona no comparezca voluntariamente ante el tribunal; la naturaleza y circunstancias del presunto delito; la seguridad de la comunidad, la aplicación de la ley y la víctima del presunto delito; y los antecedentes penales de la persona. Una persona tiene derecho a ser representada por un abogado en una audiencia descrita en la enmienda propuesta.

Propuesta Número 4 (HJR 7)
La HJR 7 propone una enmienda constitucional para destinar al fondo de agua de Texas parte de los ingresos derivados de los impuestos estatales sobre las ventas y sobre el uso, así como para estipular la asignación y el uso de esos ingresos. La enmienda propuesta autorizaría a la legislatura a destinar y transferir fondos a cuentas administradas por la Junta de Desarrollo del Agua de Texas. La enmienda propuesta también permitiría a la legislatura suspender la asignación de fondos a estas cuentas durante un estado de desastre declarado, de acuerdo con lo establecido en el Capítulo 418 del Código de Gobierno de Texas.
La enmienda propuesta aparecerá en la boleta de la siguiente manera: “La enmienda constitucional para destinar al fondo de agua de Texas parte de los ingresos derivados de los impuestos estatales sobre las ventas y sobre el uso, así como para estipular la asignación y el uso de esos ingresos”.
Propuesta Número 5 (HJR 99)
La HJR 99 propone una enmienda constitucional para autorizar a la legislatura a eximir de impuestos ad valorem los bienes muebles tangibles consistentes en alimento para animales en poder del propietario del bien para su venta al por menor. La enmienda propuesta autorizaría a la legislatura a ofrecer requisitos adicionales de elegibilidad para la exención.
La enmienda propuesta aparecerá en la boleta de la siguiente manera: “La enmienda constitucional que autoriza a la legislatura a eximir de impuestos ad valorem los bienes muebles tangibles consistentes en alimento para animales en poder del propietario del bien para su venta al por menor”.
Propuesta Número 6 (HJR 4)
La HJR 4 propone una enmienda constitucional para prohibir a la legislatura promulgar una ley que imponga un impuesto ocupacional a determinadas entidades que realicen transacciones de transmisión de valores o que imponga un impuesto a determinadas transacciones de valores. La enmienda propuesta no prohibiría la aplicación de un impuesto comercial general medido en función de la actividad comercial, un impuesto sobre la producción de minerales, un impuesto sobre las primas de seguros, un impuesto sobre las ventas y el uso de bienes personales tangibles o servicios, o una tarifa que se base en el costo de procesamiento o creación de documentos. La enmienda propuesta tampoco prohibiría una modificación en la tasa de un impuesto existente al 1 de enero de 2026.
La enmienda propuesta aparecerá en la boleta de la siguiente manera: “La enmienda constitucional que prohíbe a la legislatura promulgar una ley que imponga un impuesto ocupacional a determinadas entidades que realicen transacciones de transmisión de valores o que imponga un impuesto a determinadas transacciones de valores”.
Propuesta Número 7 (HJR 133)
La HJR 133 propone una enmienda constitucional para permitir a la legislatura otorgar a los cónyuges sobrevivientes de veteranos de las Fuerzas Armadas de los Estados Unidos una exención del impuesto sobre la propiedad a su residencia familiar. La enmienda propuesta eximiría total o parcialmente del impuesto sobre la propiedad a la residencia familiar del cónyuge si el veterano hubiera fallecido de una condición médica o enfermedad que se presupone, según la ley federal, han estado relacionadas con el servicio. La exención se aplicaría solo a un cónyuge sobreviviente que no haya vuelto a contraer matrimonio desde el fallecimiento del veterano.
La enmienda propuesta aparecerá en la boleta de la siguiente manera: “La enmienda constitucional que autoriza a la legislatura a establecer una exención de impuestos ad valorem de la totalidad o parte del valor de mercado de la residencia familiar del cónyuge sobreviviente de un veterano fallecido como resultado de una condición o enfermedad que se presupone, según la ley federal, haber estado relacionadas con el servicio”.

patrimonio de una persona fallecida a causa de la muerte de dicha persona, incluido un impuesto sobre el patrimonio, la herencia o la defunción. La enmienda propuesta prohibiría a la legislatura imponer un impuesto estatal sobre la transferencia de un patrimonio, herencia, legado, sucesión o regalo de una persona, familia, patrimonio o fideicomiso, incluidas las transferencias de salto generacional, si dicho impuesto no estuviera vigente el 1 de enero de 2025. La enmienda propuesta también prohibiría a la legislatura aumentar la tasa impositiva o ampliar la aplicabilidad a nuevas partes de un impuesto a las transferencias que estuviera en vigencia el 1 de enero de 2025. La enmienda propuesta no prohibiría la imposición o el cambio en la tasa o aplicabilidad de un impuesto comercial general en función de la actividad comercial; un impuesto sobre la producción de minerales; un impuesto sobre la emisión de seguros de títulos; un impuesto vigente el 1 de enero de 2016; un impuesto sobre la transferencia de un vehículo automotor por donación; o un impuesto ad valorem sobre la propiedad.
La enmienda propuesta aparecerá en la boleta de la siguiente manera: “La enmienda constitucional para prohibir que la legislatura imponga impuestos sucesorios aplicables a la propiedad de un difunto o a la transferencia de un patrimonio, herencia, legado, sucesión o donación”.
Propuesta Número 9 (HJR 1)
La HJR 1 propone una enmienda constitucional para cambiar la cantidad de bienes personales tangibles que se poseen o se utilizan para la producción de ingresos que la legislatura podría eximir de los impuestos sobre la propiedad a $125,000 en lugar de la cantidad mínima suficiente para recuperar los costos de la administración del impuesto sobre la propiedad.
La enmienda propuesta aparecerá en la boleta de la siguiente manera: “La enmienda constitucional para autorizar a la legislatura a eximir de impuestos ad valorem una parte del valor de mercado de los bienes muebles tangibles que posea una persona y que se mantengan o utilicen para la producción de ingresos”.
Propuesta Número 10 (SJR 84)
La SJR 84 propone una enmienda constitucional para autorizar a la legislatura a prever una exención temporal de impuestos ad valorem del valor tasado de una mejora a una residencia familiar que haya sido completamente destruida por un incendio. La enmienda propuesta autoriza a la legislatura a determinar la
duración de la exención y a establecer requisitos adicionales de elegibilidad para dicha exención.
La enmienda propuesta aparecerá en la boleta de la siguiente manera: “La enmienda constitucional para autorizar a la legislatura a prever una exención temporal de impuestos ad valorem del valor tasado de una mejora a una residencia familiar que haya sido completamente destruida por un incendio”.
Propuesta Número 11 (SJR 85)
La SJR 85 propone una enmienda constitucional para autorizar a la legislatura a aumentar de $10,000 a $60,000 el monto de la exención de impuestos a la propiedad por parte de un distrito escolar del valor de mercado de la vivienda residencial de una persona de 65 años de edad o más o de una persona discapacitada.
La enmienda propuesta aparecerá en la boleta de la siguiente manera: “La enmienda constitucional que autoriza a la legislatura a aumentar el monto de la exención de impuestos ad valorem por un distrito escolar del valor de mercado de la residencia familiar de una persona de edad avanzada o discapacitada”.
Propuesta Número 12 (SJR 27)
La SJR 27 propone una enmienda constitucional para cambiar la composición y los procedimientos de la Comisión Estatal de Conducta Judicial (SCJC). La enmienda propuesta introduciría estos cambios: (1) cambiar la composición de la SCJC para que esté compuesta por seis jueces nombrados por la Corte Suprema de Texas y siete ciudadanos nombrados por el Gobernador que tengan por lo menos 35 años de edad, con ambos grupos de personas designadas requiriendo el consentimiento del Senado de Texas para ser confirmados; (2) restringir el poder de la SCJC para emitir una reprimenda privada (o imponer un requisito de que la persona obtenga capacitación o educación adicional) a una persona que no haya recibido previamente una reprimenda privada y en respuesta a una queja que no alegue comportamiento delictivo; (3) exigir que la SCJC determine que una persona incurrió en una conducta intencional o persistente que es claramente inconsistente con el desempeño adecuado de los deberes de un juez, o determine que existe otra buena causa, antes de emitir una amonestación o castigo público; (4) ampliar la facultad de la SCJC de ordenar la suspensión sin goce de sueldo como sanción; (5) otorgar al presidente de la Corte Suprema de Texas el poder de seleccionar a los jueces de la corte de apelaciones para prestar servicio en un tribunal para revisar la recomendación de la SCJC para la destitución o jubilación
de una persona de su cargo, sin ningún requisito de que cada tribunal de apelaciones designe a uno de sus miembros para consideración del presidente de la Corte Suprema; y (6) ordenar a la Corte Suprema de Texas y al Gobernador que nombren a los miembros de la SCJC para mandatos iniciales de dos, cuatro y seis años a partir del 1 de enero de 2026, y que los mandatos subsiguientes sean de seis años, de modo que una vez completados los mandatos iniciales, la SCJC esté compuesta por miembros que cumplan mandatos escalonados de seis años.
La enmienda propuesta aparecerá en la boleta de la siguiente manera: “La enmienda constitucional relativa a la composición de la Comisión Estatal de Conducta Judicial, la composición del tribunal para revisar las recomendaciones de la comisión, y la autoridad de la comisión, el tribunal y la Corte Suprema de Texas para sancionar más eficazmente a los jueces y magistrados por mala conducta judicial”.
Propuesta Número 13 (SJR 2)
La SJR 2 propone una enmienda constitucional para aumentar la exención obligatoria de impuestos sobre la propiedad con fines generales de las escuelas públicas primarias y secundarias de $100,000 a $140,000 del valor de mercado de la residencia.
La enmienda propuesta aparecerá en la boleta de la siguiente manera: “La enmienda constitucional para aumentar el monto de la exención de impuestos ad valorem de las residencias familiares por un distrito escolar de $100,000 a $140,000”.
Propuesta Número 14 (SJR 3)
La SJR 3 propone una enmienda constitucional para exigir a la legislatura disponer la creación de una nueva agencia estatal, el Instituto de Investigación y Prevención de la Demencia de Texas (DPRIT). La enmienda propuesta crearía el Fondo para la Prevención e Investigación de la Demencia que sería administrado por el DPRIT. Según la enmienda propuesta, el DPRIT sería responsable de otorgar subvenciones financieras para la investigación, la prevención y el tratamiento de la demencia, la enfermedad de Alzheimer, la enfermedad de Parkinson y los trastornos relacionados. La enmienda propuesta también autorizaría al Contralor de Cuentas Públicas de Texas a transferir $3 mil millones del fondo estatal de ingresos generales al Fondo de Prevención e Investigación de la Demencia.
La enmienda propuesta aparecerá en la boleta de la siguiente manera: “La enmienda constitucional que prevé la creación del Instituto de Prevención e Investigación de la Demencia de Texas,
estableciendo el Fondo de Prevención e Investigación de la Demencia para destinar dinero para la investigación, prevención y tratamiento de la demencia, la enfermedad de Alzheimer, la enfermedad de Parkinson y trastornos relacionados en este estado, y transfiriendo a dicho fondo $3 mil millones de los ingresos generales del estado”.
Propuesta Número 15 (SJR 34)
La SJR 34 propone una enmienda constitucional para afirmar que un padre tiene la responsabilidad de criar y proteger al hijo del padre y el derecho fundamental correspondiente a ejercer el cuidado, la custodia y el control del hijo del padre, incluido el derecho a tomar decisiones sobre la crianza del niño.
La enmienda propuesta aparecerá en la boleta de la siguiente manera: “La enmienda constitucional que afirma que los padres son los principales responsables de la toma de decisiones para sus hijos”.
Propuesta Número 16 (SJR 37)
La SJR 37 propone una enmienda constitucional para establecer que solo los ciudadanos de los Estados Unidos pueden votar en las elecciones de Texas.
La enmienda propuesta aparecerá en la boleta de la siguiente manera: “La enmienda constitucional que aclara que un votante debe ser ciudadano de los Estados Unidos”.
Propuesta Número 17 (HJR 34)
HJR 34 propone una enmienda constitucional para permitir que la legislatura exima de impuestos a la propiedad, en los condados que limitan con los Estados Unidos Mexicanos, la porción del valor tasado de una propiedad inmobiliaria que surgió de la instalación o construcción de una infraestructura de seguridad fronteriza y mejoras relacionadas. La enmienda propuesta autorizaría a la legislatura a definir la “infraestructura de seguridad fronteriza” y prescribir requisitos adicionales de elegibilidad para la exención.
La enmienda propuesta aparecerá en la boleta de la siguiente manera: “La enmienda constitucional para autorizar a la legislatura a establecer una exención de impuestos ad valorem del monto del valor de mercado de los bienes inmuebles ubicados en un condado fronterizo con los Estados Unidos Mexicanos que surja de la instalación o construcción en la propiedad de infraestructura de seguridad fronteriza y mejoras relacionadas”.

The image of the Main Building at Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) in San Antonio never fails to stir something deep within me. The other evening when Jo Emma and I were watching the ten o'clock evening news on KSAT, what caught my attention was a photograph of the Main Building at Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) that was flashed on the screen. The sight of that familiar façade is very dear to my heart and transported me back to a time filled with ambition, growth, and heartfelt connection. OLLU wasn’t just an institution of higher education—it was a sanctuary of learning and community, a place where my professional and personal paths intertwined in the most meaningful ways. The news of budget cuts and program closures was sobering, but it also reminded me of the vibrant legacy that lives on in those of us who walked its halls.
Our Lady of the Lake University announced significant budget cuts that will eliminate 16 degree programs, affecting nearly 200 students and resulting in the dismissal of 19 professors. The impacted programs span a wide range of disciplines, including English, Chemistry, Sociology, Theology, and several others at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. Students were notified via email in February 2025, with the university stating that no new enrollments would
be accepted in the discontinued programs starting Fall 2025.
The university cited low enrollment as the primary reason for the cuts, emphasizing the need to make financially responsible decisions to ensure long-term viability. While students can still take individual courses in some of the discontinued subjects, they can no longer pursue full degrees in those areas. Faculty members were also affected, with 26 professors impacted— only five reassigned within the university and one retiring. The rest were let go, sparking concern and frustration among both students and staff. Despite offering academic advising to help students adjust their degree plans, OLLU did not provide financial compensation for those needing to transfer or change courses. Students like doctoral candidate Lorie Hidalgo expressed feeling blindsided and dissatisfied with the university’s communication and support. OLLU officials maintain that no further program cuts are expected and believe the changes will strengthen the institution’s financial health moving forward.
As I sat there listening to the news reporter and still holding the image of the Main Building in my mind, many fond memories of OLLU started to reappear. I first stepped onto the OLLU campus while working full-time as Director of the Bilingual/Bicultural Education Program at South San Antonio ISD. Despite the demands of my
job, I pursued my Elementary Education Teaching Certificate, which I proudly earned in May 1974. That experience was more than academic— it was transformative. The professors, the evening classes, the camaraderie among fellow educators—all of it shaped my understanding of what it meant to teach with purpose and cultural sensitivity. OLLU gave me the tools to not only educate but to advocate.
Two years later, OLLU launched its Bilingual Education Department, and I was invited to join as an Adjunct Professor. Teaching in the evenings after a full day at South San was no small feat, but it was a labor of love. I saw in my students the same passion and drive that had fueled my own journey. Many of them went on to become bilingual educators themselves, and I was fortunate to recruit several into the South San district. Watching them grow
into confident, capable teachers was one of the most rewarding chapters of my career.
The rhythm of those days— rushing home to prepare for class, standing before eager learners, sharing stories and strategies—still echoes in my memory. OLLU wasn’t just a workplace or a school; it was a second home. The sense of belonging, the shared mission to uplift bilingual education, and the friendships forged in those classrooms remain some of the most cherished aspects of my life. Every lecture, every late-night grading session, every hallway conversation contributed to a tapestry of unforgettable moments.
Even now, as I reflect on the challenges facing OLLU today, I hold fast to the belief that its spirit endures. Institutions may change, programs may come and go, but the impact they leave on individuals is eternal.
My time at OLLU shaped not only my career but my identity as an educator and mentor. It instilled in me a deep respect for cultural heritage and the power of education to transform lives. That legacy continues in every student I taught, every colleague I collaborated with, and every classroom that welcomed bilingual learners.
In sharing this story, I hope to honor the enduring heart of Our Lady of the Lake University. It’s a tribute to the professors who inspired me, the students who challenged me, and the mission that united us. Though the university faces difficult decisions, its essence—its commitment to community, education, and cultural empowerment— remains alive in those of us who carry its lessons forward. And for me, those memories will always be wonderful, fond, and unforgettable.

An enthusiastic crowd of San Antonio art lovers greeted Juan Miguel Ramos’s return to Artpace’s Hudson Showroom last week [August 28, 2025]. A few of the guests were present twenty-three years ago when Ramos participated in Artpace’s 2002 Texas Artists residency as part of the International Artist-in-Residence program. The Hudson Showroom Opening Reception, Sisyphus Strut by Juan Ramos, also offers a salon-style wall preview of the artist’s long-term project, San Anto Sentinels, a graphic novel currently in development.
CultureMap San Antonio, a digital lifestyle news source, reviewed Ramos’s new Hudson Showroom exhibit, noting that the artist reflects on his career by connecting formative works with new directions. They explained, “Central to the show is Southside Loteria alongside a preview of his graphic novel-inprogress, San Anto Sentinels, displayed salon-style with illustrations and text.” The exhibition also features a looping soundtrack of 12 songs from San Antonio bands that Ramos has played with or organized.
Artpace greatly influenced Juan Ramos’ early career, and returning for a new Artpace show had deep meaning for him and his family. Founded by artist and philanthropist Linda Pace, Artpace opened to the public in 1995. Ms. Pace conceived Artpace as a "laboratory of dreams" for artistic experimentation and growth. The art organization, housed in a renovated 1920s Hudson automobile dealership building, is renowned for nurturing creativity, fostering dialogue, and driving artistic innovation both locally and globally. The highly creative Artpace CEO Riley Robinson was
instrumental in inviting Ramos for his new show.
Ramos grew up in one of San Antonio’s Southwest blue-collar neighborhoods. He was an only child and went everywhere with his parents. When they visited friends or went shopping, he always had paper, pencils, and pens handy to engage in drawing. His parents, recognizing his love for art and budding talent, enrolled him in Saturday classes at the San Antonio Southwest School of Art. They also drove him to the Westside Guadalupe Cultural Center, where he learned watercolor painting. He also took classes at the McNay Art Institute and followed up with art classes throughout his middle school and high school years.
Ramos loved learning about art, and his enrollment during his teen years in various art programs demonstrated this commitment. A major
advancement in the learning process occurred in 1989 when he met art teacher Jackie Von Honts. While he was a student at South San High School, Ramos took additional classes from Jackie Von Honts. A San Antonio native with a solid reputation as a muralist, Von Honts proved to be an important mentor to Ramos. Von Honts earned degrees from the University of the Americas in Mexico City and the Pratt Art Institute in New York City, and she completed a doctorate in creative arts from New York University. One of her notable artistic achievements was painting a 65-foot-long oil mural of the U.S. Olympic Pentathlon team engaged in the five sports of shooting, fencing, running, horseback riding, and swimming. Her mural was the only painting displayed at the US Olympic event in Los Angeles.
When Ramos entered college in
1989, his years of taking art classes from numerous local art institutions more than prepared him to succeed as an art major. But the following year, music intervened. While in high school, Ramos had formed or joined several bands. The bands practiced constantly, and they always found gigs over the weekends. After a year of college, Ramos left to spend more time with his band.
Despite the time demands of his music performances during the early and mid-1990s, Ramos chose to remain active in painting. He teamed up with Cruz Ortiz and Manny Castillo to establish the San Anto Cultural Arts mural project associated with Inner City Development in San Antonio, Texas. Drawing from what he had learned from Dr. Jackie Von Honts, Ramos contributed to painting several iconic murals in
San Antonio’s Westside. Over the years, San Anto Cultural Arts has completed numerous murals that have become classic symbols of local neighborhoods, and the organization has used arts education to contribute to the social and cultural vitality of San Antonio's Westside. The Westside area experienced perennial challenges of gang violence and poverty during that era, and Manuel “Manny” Castillo was especially instrumental in motivating and guiding the San Anto vision of using art as a positive force for community development and youth empowerment.
In the late 1990s, Ramos relocated to Austin and attended Austin Community College. He became active in Austin’s famed music scene, which motivated him to form his band, Sexto Sol. He returned to San Antonio in 1999 and submitted his
portfolio, the “Secret City” series, as part of his qualifying criteria for the Master’s program in Art at UT San Antonio.
Ramos had just completed his Master’s program at UT San Antonio when Harriett and I met him at a small Blue Star exhibit. I was President of the UTSA campus at the time and bought several of his works for the
Downtown Library. We stayed in touch and later bought more of his work for our personal collection.
In the Fall of 2002, Artpace, through its International Artist-in-Residence program in San Antonio, selected Ramos, marking a significant milestone in the young artist’s career. During his residency, Ramos created a two-screen video projection with a narrative soundtrack. In the short presentation, the video captures four scenes depicting individual characters, each with a monologue describing the everyday life of the Southside where Ramos grew up. Ramos described the series as trying to convey the entire culture he experienced in San Antonio, one of the largest cities in the US, “where there is a secret city –where people don’t really know who we are.”
In his 2023 solo exhibition "Secret City Series" at Un Grito Gallery, Ramos elaborated on this concept in artworks centered on the themes of invisibility, cultural memory, and the dynamism of urban life. For example, one of the prints in this series superimposes a Latina woman admiring a friend’s new truck with a dialogue showing her thoughts about friends who
left San Antonio to go to college.
During his Artpace residency, Ramos also created the Southside Loteria, an installation that examines the fluidity of cultural identity and cultural icons, themes that resonate with Ramos, who frequently explores what he considers a continuous adaptation and redefinition of the sense of self among Latinos. The Artpace experience opened additional art residency doors for Ramos, and he was invited to residencies and exhibits in Los Angeles, Houston, Austin, and Puerto Rico. In 2004, however, he decided to tour with his band.
During his break from painting, Ramos played drums regularly in various bands and loved attending musical events. He also established a brief connection as a writer covering musical events with the San Antonio Current (SA Current).
In a 2007 story for the SA Current, Ramos wrote about the Salúte International Bar music scene where one could listen to the “jazzy Tex-Mex” sound of Esteban Jordan. He added that over the previous decade, he had visited the Salúte Bar more than a hundred times.
More recently, Ramos has worked as an adjunct art instructor for several colleges. I spent nearly fifty years in higher education, and I know that the life of an adjunct art professor is demanding and financially stressful. Ramos taught for an extended period at Our Lady of the Lake University and has had short teaching stints at Northwest Vista and Palo Alto College. He now has a more stable position at Southwest School of Art, which is a part of UT San Antonio. In each of these positions, Juan Miguel Ramos has inspired and mentored students to appreciate and create Chicano art.
Ramos’s upcoming graphic novel, The San Anto Sentinels, is currently in developmental stages, but, if the work he shared at the new Hudson Showroom is any indication, the upcoming project will be dazzling. Drawing upon regional cultural touchstones, including local music, the comic book art genre exhibition, which tells the legends of heroes and villains in a Latino style, is accompanied by an audio track featuring twelve songs from San Antonio bands.

The Bexar County Commissioners Court saw a packed chamber this morning as community members, first responders, and local organizations gathered for a series of heartfelt recognitions and proclamations.
The session opened with a prayer led by Pastor Jeremy Jennings of Oak Hills Church, setting a respectful tone for a day that celebrated service, resilience, and community pride.
County Judge Peter Sakai led the first and most emotional recognition of the morning. More than 200 first responders from the Fire Marshal’s Offices, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, Precinct 2 Constable’s Office, and Emergency Service Districts were honored for volunteering during the devastating Kerr County Floods on July 4, 2025. Each name was read aloud, acknowledging their courage and sacrifice. Judge Sakai reminded the audience that “what these first responders witnessed will never be forgotten,” underscoring the profound impact of their service.
Commissioner Grant Moody (Pct. 3) presented a proclamation recognizing the UTSA Roadrunners baseball team, who captured the program’s first-ever NCAA Regional Championship title. The achievement was
celebrated as a milestone for UTSA athletics and a point of pride for Bexar County.
Commissioner Rebeca Clay-Flores (Pct. 1) honored Sheriff Javier Salazar and the Bexar County Gives Back Program, which has saved taxpayers millions of dollars. The initiative offers judges the option to sentence nonviolent offenders to supervised community service—such as landscaping and clearing debris in flooded park areas—instead of jail time. The program was praised as both costeffective and restorative for the community.
Commissioner Tommy Calvert (Pct. 4) turned the spotlight on some very special four-legged public servants, presenting a proclamation recognizing National Therapy Dog Day and honoring the SA Royals Therapy Dog Team—Coco Chanel, El Rey, Blue, and Piper. These dogs provide comfort and emotional support at the Cadena-Reeves Justice Center, easing the stress of jurors, court staff, judges, attorneys, and families navigating the justice system.
The meeting highlighted the wide range of ways Bexar County residents—human and canine alike—contribute to public service and community resilience. From disaster response to championship sports, innovative justice programs to therapy dog support, today’s court session was a celebration of dedication and achievement across the county.

Hello everyone! Where’s Cleto this week but the very well known Maverick Grill and Saloon! This restaurant right outside Floresville has been around for years! Whenever, I’m in the mood for a nice tasty steak this is where I go! I came and had the ribeye steak and once again they never disappoint! The steak came to the table hot and juicy! The one thing I look for in a good steak is the tenderness and if it has flavor . This steak had both! With every bite I was completely satisfied! Must try!I also tried the Country Fried steak (that covered the whole plate!) The homemade white gravy is just as much a staple as is the steak itself! The crust is a very light breading with
a very flavorful crunch! I recommend you come hungry when you head to Maverick Grill and Saloon! Their establishment has plenty of room for your whole family, parties, and a nice bar area to lounge in for a few! The other thing I noticed about Maverick Grill and Saloon is that it recognizes its patrons! I tried Car 76 chicken

This cobbler was so good I took an extra shot of insulin and I don’t even have diabetes! Make sure to visit Maverick Grill and Saloon it’s definitely worth the Drive!
