Why Is Immigration Still a Mess in 2025?

The president promised that ICE raids would focus on undocumented immigrants with criminal records and multiple arrests. But what we’re actually seeing is families being torn apart—mothers, fathers, and young adults with no criminal history being deported, even when some are in the middle of the legal process to become U.S. citizens. Meanwhile, there are undocumented immigrants with serious criminal histories who are not being deported, but instead are being placed on house arrest. This does not make sense. This isn’t about politics—this is about fairness, logic, and safety. It’s clear our immigration system is broken. But we have to start somewhere—and that start should be based on common sense. Saying “send them all back,” is not a real solution. Even if it were, it’s simply not an option. What we need is a plan—one that is strategic, humane, and actually works. Most of us feel very passionate when it comes to immigration and how it’s being handled. Whether you’re for stricter enforcement or a more compassionate approach, the truth remains: there has to be a plan. We need to fix what’s broken. And the first logical step should be focusing on individuals who are repeat offenders and have criminal records.

Removing them would save taxpayer dollars currently being spent on jail housing. It would reduce the strain on our overwhelmed court systems. And most importantly, it would help make our communities safer. These are people’s lives we’re dealing with—not case numbers. Do you agree that we should have a plan that reflects that?

that are undocumented who are at risk and going back as well. There is no way to define who stays in who goes because they’re all “illegal” immigrants.

That means that they all broke the law coming in undocumented and remained illegal, and they committed a crime. This administration also offered amnesty for those who go back electively and come back in the right way, and no other administration has done that. So, they are getting a chance. If we do not have borders and walls and a system where people are vetted and assimilated to our country, we are not a sovereign nation, which means we would be subject to any and everything that comes in and that is a risk to your family and for mine, for generations to come. Just because the news and mainstream media changed their names to migrants and not illegal immigrants doesn’t mean that the government laws are abolished. They are all still illegal. You yourself cannot move to any other country without being vetted and enter without a visa or approval from the government, that same process exists here just like everywhere else. When you emphasise and say things are not fair and there’s no logic to the system, please tell me what that is and means. When someone comes in, has a visa, it expires and they don’t report or renew their visa or go back, is that not a system or logic? Also, if they come in illegally and are undocumented, is that not against the law? Please explain to me what is broken? I wanna know if it’s OK to have murderers, sex offenders, drug cartels, MS-13, Tren de Aragua, and jihadist/extremist into this country who will eventually terrorize you, your children and mine.

These people have admitted that they are here to be criminals and cause destruction . Where is the logic missing?”

Being here illegally is a misdemeanor. San Antonio-based artist Jennifer Agricola Mojica paints vibrant, ephemeral spaces that offer belonging in a discordant world. Her superimposed compositions cross genres of abstraction and figurative painting. By stripping and rebuilding thick layers of paint, Agricola Mojica creates visual tensions that allude to fractured memory and the deception of time. In The Sixteen Dollar Cake,a sleeping figure is positioned under a lush canopy of monstera plants as lingering smoke rises from the wicks of extinguished birthday candles, alluding to memories and the passage of time.

Jennifer Agricola Mojica’s paintings in the exhibition portray the transience of navigating through grief and motherhood with fragmented forms.

Mojica’s work conveys shifting perspectives and figures, layers that conceal and reveal, monotonous repetition punctured by shapes, and suggestions of a fragmented time and space.

“I explore the complexities of human connection, the search for meaning in motherhood, femininity, and domesticity, and the fragile nature of our sense of security in an ever-

changing world. In recent years, my paintings have embarked on an existential journey, delving into the transient concepts of safety and vulnerability.Through abstraction and raw, visceral responses, I investigate the fragility of these spaces.

My process begins with disruption and ends with a subtle, harmonious stillness.

Planes shift, shapes repeat, and forms emerge from varying perspectives. Figures fragment and reassemble, capturing fleeting moments of unity amidst complexity.

Each brushstroke reflects a search for an image that resonates with a deeper sense of belonging. As I navigate the challenges of raising two children, I find myself in a constant state of learning, where discomfort and beauty intertwine. These experiences infuse my work, shaping the compositional space with the echoes of everyday life.

Motifs like houses, birds, and figures walk the line between realism and abstraction, exploring themes of rest, vulnerability, and maternal instinct. In my practice, I build and deconstruct—constructing, covering, and uncovering compositions. This dynamic process creates a dialogue between the artwork, the creator, and the viewer.

Through layers of distortion and repetition, I invite a reflective contemplation on the ever-evolving nature of connection and selfhood.”

Elecciones municipales: ¿democracia fallida?

Por Julián Villarreal, PhD Acabamos de tener otra ronda de elecciones municipales este pasado 7 de junio en donde vimos nuevamente una participación lamentablemente baja.

Tal solo 9.6% de los electores salieron a votar en los comicios del 3 de mayo en que cinco de los 10 concejales en funciones además del actual alcalde Nirenberg no se reelegían. Gracias a los límites de mandato, el alcalde Nirenberg y algunos concejales no se reelegían y como consecuencia había una larga lista de 27 candidatos a la alcaldía y numerosos candidatos para cada de los 10 distritos del concejo. Como había tantas candidaturas y nuestro método de votación es pésimo (solo se permite votar por una sola candidatura en cada contienda y no se admiten métodos de aprobación o de preferencia) no era de sorprender que ningún candidato a la alcaldía obtuvo una mayoría en la elección del 3 de mayo, lo que dio lugar a una segunda ronda a la cual avanzaron las dos candidaturas con mayor pluralidad de votos: Gina Ortiz Jones y Rolando Pablos. Además, cuatro de las 10 escaños para concejal también se tenían que determinar mediante una segunda ronda programada para el 7 de junio. Sin embargo, a pesar de la atención mediática hacia las campañas y de los casi $3 millones gastados por las candidaturas de Jones y Pablo, la mayoría de la gente simplemente no salió a votar.

En la segunda ronda, apenas votó el 17% del electorado —tan solo 143,017 de los 841,653 electores registrados en la ciudad de San Antonio. Jones resultó ganadora con 77,484 votos, es decir el 54% de la votación y ella será la próxima alcaldesa. Aunque la participación en la segunda ronda fue casi el doble de la primera ronda, era sumamente baja en comparación con las elecciones federales en las cuales la participación tiende a superar el 50%. Si el abstencionismo hubiera sido candidato, habría ganado.

Y este no es un fenómeno nuevo pues hemos visto muy bajas tasas de participación en casi todas las elecciones municipales en las últimas décadas.

Algo va mal y debemos cuestionarnos por qué la participación es tan poca. ¿De verdad podemos decir que tenemos una democracia legítima y justa? La palabra "democracia" viene de las raíces griegas: 'demos' (pueblo) y 'kratos' (poder) — literalmente "el poder del pueblo". ¿Qué nos dice de "el poder del pueblo" cuando una alcaldesa de esta ciudad de casi 1.5 millones de habitantes puede llegar al poder con tan solo el 9.2% del voto del electorado (que ni siquiera es toda la población adulta ya que no incluye a los no registrados ni a los no ciudadanos)? El margen de votación entre Jones y Pablos era de tan solo 12,282 votos. Es decir, el 1.4% del electorado representaba el margen de victoria de Jones. Y esto es el caso en casi todas las elecciones locales.

Una minoría decide quienes serán los gobernantes. Claramente esta no esa una representatividad real, algo no está funcionando, y pone en tela juicio la legitimidad de todo el sistema.

Algunos de los factores que frecuentemente se citan son: que a la gente no les interesa la política, la gente no se informa, o simplemente se hace caso omiso a los llamados a salir a votar.

Pero esas razones no me convencen. A la gente sí les interesan su calidad de vida, la seguridad de sus vecindarios, el costo de la vivienda, el tráfico, etc. La verdad es que las personas conocen íntimamente sus propias vidas y sus comunidades y se preocupan mucho por ellas. El dilema es que para muchas personas no existe una clara conexión entre su calidad de vida y el funcionamiento del gobierno municipal. Si bien hay poco conocimiento entre la población acerca del quehacer del gobierno municipal, de cómo funciona la toma de decisiones, el gasto público, etc., no existe una falta de interés por parte de las y los ciudadanos por mejorar su condición de vida y la de sus comunidades. Es que muchos no piensan que salir a votar por candidatos que muchas veces no conocen en absoluto, sea una manera eficaz de mejorar su condición de vida ni de velar por el bienestar de la comunidad. Muchos piensan que el gobierno no resuelve asuntos de impacto en sus vidas.

Y quizás tienen razón. La bajísima participación en las elecciones no se trata de apatía sino de enajenación.

Vivimos en una sociedad dominada por las corporaciones y la gran mayoría de la población está enajenada del poder. Aun cuando salimos a votar, estamos eligiendo candidaturas que fueron promovidas e impulsadas por la élite y por intereses particulares externos que financiaron sus candidaturas a través de comités políticos de dudosa procedencia. Tal es el caso tanto de Jones como de Pablos: dos candidaturas estrechamente ligadas al establecimiento político del sistema bipartidista hegemónico. Ninguna de las dos candidaturas surgió de la base trabajadora de la ciudad. Si bien vinieron de esa base en algún tiempo en el pasado, ya habían alcanzado puestos entre la élite: Pablos como secretario de estado de Texas y Jones como subsecretaria de las Fuerzas Aéreas. Ninguno tiene experiencia en la gobernación local ni un historial de logros comunitarios recientes o significativos. Parecía que solo querían ganarse un puesto en el poder con motivos partidistas, quizás con la mira hacía una larga carrera política. Que el abstencionismo haya sido tan fuerte es un indicio de que la gran mayoría de las personas no conocían ni tenían apego a ninguna candidatura ya que esos factores son los que más impulsan a los electores a salir a las urnas. Son las élites que escogen a cuáles candidatos llegarán a la boleta, cuáles tendrán mayor visibilidad

mediática, y solo en la etapa final una minoría de electores que emite su voto para darle la apariencia de legitimidad democrática al proceso.

Además, cabe destacar que, en muchos aspectos, es de poca importancia quién ocupe el cargo de alcalde ya que en nuestro sistema de gobierno el poder del alcalde es muy poco y sirve más como una figura. El verdadero poder reside en la gerencia municipal que no es un cargo electo sino es nombrado por el pleno del concejo. Más allá del gobierno municipal, las juntas de gobierno de los organismos públicos como CPS Energy, SAWS, y VIA, tampoco son cargos electos. El alcalde sirve como miembro ex-oficio de las juntas de CPS y SAWS y los integrantes de las juntas de gobierno son nombradas por el concejo; sin embargo no hay supervisión eficaz por parte del concejo sobre estas entidades y tienen autonomía casi absoluta en sus operaciones cotidianas y su planeación a largo plazo. El alcalde y el concejo en conjunto deciden sobre el presupuesto municipal y los pormenores de políticas como por ejemplo la zonificación y los reglamentos locales. Sin embargo la gerencia municipal propone la mayoría de estas políticas y la implementación de lo aprobado por el concejo también es responsabilidad de la gerencia municipal no del alcalde. El concejo a pesar de sus diversas reuniones, deliberaciones, comités, etc, en muchos de los casos sirve solo para aprobar automáticamente cualquier recomendación que sale de la gerencia municipal que siempre está al servicio de los grandes intereses económicos privados.

Nos urge evaluar de fondo nuestro modo de participación ciudadana y cambiar el mismo. Ya no podemos tolerar que tan pocas personas participen ni que la agenda del ayuntamiento se dirija por los intereses privados de la élite y los grandes poderes económicos.

Urge una nueva visión de gobernación popular de base que ponga al centro el bienestar común y las necesidades de los más vulnerables. Tenemos cuatro años para pensarlo ya que gracias a una enmienda a los estatutos promovida por Nirenberg y el actual concejo, los mandatos ahora duran cuatro años en vez de dos. Espero que para el 2029 el pueblo de San Antonio realice el arduo trabajo que forjar una democracia justa, eficaz, y de base que pueda enfrentar y solucionar los problemas persistentes como la falta de vivienda y la crisis de las personas en situación de calle, la pobreza que da origen a tantas violencias, la contaminación ambiental y los impactos de la crisis climática que ocasionan olas de calor, sequías, y clima extremo, y muchos otros asuntos de urgente relevancia que nunca fueron atendidos durante el mandato de Nirenberg. No tenemos otra opción.

Borrador de Valoración Ambiental y Borrador de Determinación de Impacto No Significativo para La Instalación Experimental del Pulso Electromagnético oint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas La Fuerza Aérea de los EE. UU. (USAF) y Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA)-Lackland, Texas, anuncian la disponibilidad de un Borrador de Valoración Ambiental (EA) que aborda la construcción y operación de un nuevo sitio experimental del Pulso Electromagnético (EMP) en JBSA-Lackland, Kelly Field Annex. La USAF preparó el Borrador de EA de acuerdo con la Ley Nacional de Política Ambiental (NEPA) y las instrucciones de la USAF sobre la implementación de la NEPA. El Borrador de EA describe la propuesta de la USAF para la construcción y operación de un nuevo sitio experimental de EMP. Bajo la Acción Propuesta, Air Force Materiel Command operaría una antena móvil permanente o portátil en un área pavimentada existente contigua a la pista para realizar pruebas EMP en aeronaves. La antena sería una antena del Sistema de Medición de Ondas Continuas.

La antena crearía un campo electromagnético de baja intensidad que se aproximaría a los efectos EMP en un entorno controlado.

El Borrador de EA evalúa los impactos potenciales sobre el medio ambiente de la Acción Propuesta y la Alternativa de No Acción. El Borrador de EA muestra que la Acción Propuesta no tendría un impacto significativo en el medio ambiente. Basado en este análisis, la USAF ha preparado una Determinación de Impacto No Significativo (FONSI).

Los Spurs Invitan A Registrarse Clínicas Del Verano Por Franco El pentacampeón equipo Spurs de San Antonio mediante su filial “Spurs Sports Academy”, están convocando a la comunidad deportiva para que se registren en las 16 sesiones que tendrán durante el verano.

Con patrocinio de la compañía Barcode, las clínicas serán en la ciudad de Austin y aquí en la ciudad de El Álamo.

La diversión y duras competencias serán por igual en las edades de seis a 18 años de edad, en categoría mixta, donde los participantes aprenderán

habilidades bajo la dirección de entrenadores de excelente academia.

Los registros están disponibles en línea en el sitio Spurs.com/camps.

Todo ello de acuerdo a boletín oficial de la empresa Spurs Sports and Entertainment (SS&E).

Durante las clínicas de baloncesto los participantes serán motivados por invitados especiales entre ellos ex jugadores y actuales integrantes de Los Spurs así como de la popular mascota The Coyote y entrenadores con quienes se podrán tomar fotografías con los cinco trofeos NBA Brian O’Brien, ganados durante la temporadas de 1999, 2003. 2005, 2007 y 2014, mismos que se exhiben en

el plaza Level del estadio Frost Bank.

Los Spurs durante cincuenta años han estado presentes en la comunidad del sur de Texas, participando en programas deportivos en las diversas comunidades.

Retribuyendo el apoyo a la región y en especial al gran apoyo de su legión de seguidores quienes fueron testigos de los cinco campeonatos mundiales ganados bajo el legendario estratega en jefe Gregg Popovich.

Latina Artists Take Texas Culture to New York City

By Ricardo Romo PhD. The Ruiz-Healy Art Gallery in New York City presents Vast and Varied: Texan Women Painters, a group exhibition that includes works by Marta Sánchez and Eva Marengo Sánchez.

The exhibit will be on view at the gallery from June 12 to August 15, 2025. Women Painters tackles the Latina cultural milieu through themes of cityscapes, motherhood, mementos, and domesticity.

Marta Sánchez has been an influential figure in Chicano/a and Latina art since her inclusion in the Mira! show in 1984, the first national Chicano/ Latino art exhibition in America.

Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, Sánchez has been painting and teaching art in Pennsylvania for the past 30 years. She constructs a cultural identity portrait by merging everyday life scenes with folkloric expression. Sánchez approaches her artistic life with the idea of

“sharing art, history, and activism.”

Sánchez’ love of art began at age five when an aunt bought her an art print from a street vendor. Early in life she also collected and read comic books which led her to begin teaching herself the art of drawing. Her appreciation of art grew as she ventured downtown on the city bus by herself at age nine to browse through the art bookshelves of the San Antonio Public Library.

Sánchez earned her BFA in Art Education

from the University of Texas at Austin in 1982 and later an MFA in Painting from the Philadelphia Tyler School of Art at Temple University. Her time in Austin was formative– she was introduced to the Chicano Movement through fellow artist Santa Barraza and began to see art as a form of social activism.

To find her voice as an artist, Sánchez gained inspiration from Austin’s many exhibitions, plays, and jazz sessions. Sánchez wrote: “My work slowly turned from

being purely artistic to becoming art that served a purpose as I evolved from being a student, to an artist, to a Chicana artist.”

A significant amount of Sánchez’ work is deeply influenced by traditional Mexican folk art, and she is one of the leading Chicana artists engaged in retablo paintings and ex-votos, the small devotional paintings on tin that honor saints and express gratitude or petitions in Mexican

Catholic tradition. She is also inspired by contemporary social issues and uses her art to reflect on both her heritage and presentday concerns.

Sánchez’ artistic practice includes linocuts, monotypes, and works on aluminum or tin, often exploring themes of migration, community, and memory. Notably, she has created a series of prints and paintings focused on the San Antonio train yards

near her childhood home, examining the role of trains in Mexican migration and the city’s history. She has collaborated with other artists and poets, including a project with Chicana poet Norma E. Cantú that resulted in the book Transcendental Train Yards (Wings Press, 2013).

Sánchez has lived in Pennsylvania for the past three decades. Nonetheless, she remains deeply connected to her Texas roots and frequently references her childhood and Chicana identity in her work.

Another San Antonio artist, Eva Marengo Sánchez, uses her art to brilliantly capture

the state of mind, color, and flavor of her hometown. She has been featured in stories

by Texas Public Radio and Texas Monthly magazine. Sánchez paints canvases in her studio, images on concrete highway pillars, and murals on tall buildings. She is a rising star in the Latino art scene.

Following her graduation from a small liberal arts college in Richmond, Virginia, Sánchez began an internship with Andy and Yvette Benavides at their San Antonio South Flores frame shop in 2013.

The following year, Sánchez traveled to Mexico City where she worked on her

Spanish and studied Meso-American art and architecture. Her interest in the art of the great Mexican muralists grew as she visited museums and saw the best of Mexican art in public buildings.

Eva left Mexico with a strong desire to devote herself fulltime to painting. Eager to strengthen her artistic skills, she enrolled in several art classes at San Antonio College.

At the same time she developed a deep interest in the color and texture of Mexican food which led her to painting pan dulce, tacos, and frutas frescas commonly found in Mexican restaurants and bakeries on the Westside of San Antonio. Sánchez’ murals of pan dulce [Mexican sweet bread] at the San Antonio International Airport and on downtown highway columns adjacent to the city’s Mexican Mercado have contributed to her reputation as a realistic still life painter.

A show at the Presa House Gallery in 2019 curated by Rigo Luna helped “jump start” her career. More recently Sánchez participated in the “Soy de Tejas” show in San Antonio

and Fort Worth, Texas.

Several years ago when Sánchez was a participating artist in virtual discussions of contemporary art at the McNay Museum in San Antonio, Harriett and I heard her describe her use of still life and food as a way of talking about cultural identity.

Eva’s work in the Ruiz Healy exhibit presents on canvas her realistic “still life portraits” of seemingly mundane subjects. The oil on canvas painting titled “No, I can fix it! To: Tia Lupe” is an excellent example of ordinary objects in life that capture her attention.

Ruiz Healy noted, “Sánchez explores the complexities of grief, guilt, and regret that arise from attachment to an inanimate object.

She delves into the intersection of longing, hope, love, and nostalgia, exploring deep sentimental ties to the ordinary.”

The Vast and Varied: Texas Women Painters exhibit will introduce East Coast view e r s to a complexity of South Texas and Borderland culture that is definitively vast and varied and very exciting to experience through the eyes of these Latina artists.

Zeke Romo A Tribute Courtesy of Leilah Powell June is National Homeownership Month, a time to recognize and celebrate homeownership’s benefits for individuals, neighborhoods and communities. This month, it is also an opportunity to recognize a local hero who made homeownership possible for Westside families.

In November 2016, Zeke Romo joined the small team at a pioneering affordable housing organization, Our Casas Resident Council, which had been founded in the 1990s to create opportunities for public housing residents to become homeowners.

Zeke was already in his “second act,” having retired from a career in workforce development in Austin, and he brought not only years of government funding expertise but also a quiet but boundless enthusiasm for the work. Three years later, Zeke took on the significant challenge of heading Our Casas, becoming only its second leader in more than two decades of operations.

As he was assuming his

new role, Zeke had the chance to participate in our LISC SA Leadership Development cohort in 2019-2020. In fact, we had created the program in response to the needs of new and emerging affordable housing and community development nonprofit leaders like Zeke, in order to build capacity, set the stage for collaboration, and spark innovation in San Antonio.

Zeke was a core member of that cohort whose work exemplified all three of those goals. In his time at Our Casas he built a path to realize his organization and neighborhood’s potential and better meet Our Casas’ mission of service.

Zeke stewarded his staff at Our Casas, serving as a true colleague and partner to established and expert housing counselor Juan Gutierrez and bringing on a new staffer with an architecture background – after convincing her to apply for the position because he understood the need to expand their design skills to create new and innovative products, such as homes with a casita in the back for multigenerational families.

LISC was able to support Zeke’s commitment to strengthening his team and their programming with HUD Section 4 grant funding, the only federal program dedicated to building capacity in community development corporations like Our Casas.

Building single family homes affordable to families earning less than 80% of area median income is a difficult undertaking, but Zeke was

determined to go further, and LISC was proud to partner with him as a construction lender.

Zeke navigated the maze of multiple funding streams and put on the ground the first new construction with an ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) in the state of Texas to utilize federal sources such as HOME. He sought out and supported contractors and service providers who were based in the neighborhoods

that Our Casas worked in. He was a mentor and a friend.

Zeke died unexpectedly in April, 2025. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and worked with him. In this time of rapid change within the affordable housing sector and in our communities, the best way to honor him and his legacy—and to recognize the power of homeownership-is to continue to support the promise of organizations like Our Casas.
