For Jeff Hull, art is more than a passion—it is a lifeline. A self-taught artist with an innate talent, Hull's creative spirit lay dormant for many years as he faced profound challenges, including abandonment, addiction, and homelessness.
His path began to shift when he enrolled in a class based on The Artist’s Way, led by artist Aminah Herrman. This experience reignited his creative fire, reconnecting him with the powerful artistic voice within.
Since then, Hull has produced a diverse body of work that spans Texas, California, and Mexico City. Driven by a deep desire to uplift others through art, he has donated his talents to numerous causes and created platforms for artistic and cultural expression. His contributions include support for scholarship programs for young Hispanic women, ACTS retreat programs, and organizing the Crossroads of Hope Art Show Fundraiser, among many others.
Febrero: Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo at Centro Cultural Aztlán Gallery and Spiritual Resolution and the Creative Mind. He opened his home as part of the On/Off Fredericksburg Road Studio Tour and was a co-owner of Galleria Balleza Gallery. His work and story are featured in the documentary Art in Context: Día de los Muertos Art, funded by the University of Texas and shown regularly on KLRN, as well as Una Noche de La Gloria: Art in the Cultural Zone.
Primarily working in acrylics on canvas, Hull embraces a free-flowing approach to creativity. He believes, “There should be no rules to art,” and refuses to let limitations define his style. Guided by faith, he often says, “The canvas is my teacher, and I am merely the student,” and, “I hold the brush and God does the work.”
Hull has also made his mark as a curator, leading exhibitions such as Segundo de

SOLICITUD. Guillermo (Memo) Martínez Y Su Fiesta Beisbolera De Cumpleaños
El beisbolista internacional
Guillermo Martínez también conocido por Memo Martínez, nativo de la progresista región de Villa Las Esperanzas, estado de Coahuila, México, celebró su 51o cumpleaños, mediante fiesta beisbolera con el tema de “Astros de Houston”, en el estadio Potranco.
Donde recientemente finalizó su participación
estelar en temporada regular y la serie del playoff en categoría Masters 50+ Liga Potranco, con el equipo Los Rojos-Reds del manager y jugador Jimmy Martínez.
Memo, feliz dijo haber comenzado jugando béisbol en su natal región, donde a los 15 años debutó con el equipo regional “Los Astros”, como primer bate en la alineación y jugando en el jardín central, luego jugó en Liga Esquivel
de Palau y con Enríquez en la región carbonifera (2000), así como en otras destacándose de manager y jugador del equipo “Los Rojos de Esperanza”.
En San Antonio pidió una oportunidad al manager y jugador Catarino Obregón, dueño del club Charros Potosinos, quien lo firmó y posteriormente han sostenido excelente amistad deportiva y familiar.
Memo, durante su emotivo festejo de cumpleaños saboreó deliciosa cena con su colorido pastel decorado alusivamente con los colores de su equipo favorito de Ligas Mayores, Astros de Houston.

Cabe mencionar sobre las habilidades de Memo Martínez, quien con el paso del tiempo se ha venido acoplando con sus compañeros y equipos en el béisbol regional, cubriendo
las posiciones en el Center Field, primera base y en la lomita de los disparos. Con el tolete al hombro Memo se ha convertido en la pesadilla de lanzadores rivales ya que es un slugger sorpresa, lo mismo pega sencillos como dobletes, triples y hasta vuela cercas. "Vete por la Sombrita": A Cultural Farewell Wrapped in Shade and Sentiment

In the heart of Mexican culture, certain phrases carry more than just meaning—they carry memory, warmth, and a sense of belonging. One such phrase is "Vete por la sombrita" or "Te vas por la sombrita," a gentle farewell that literally means “go through the little shade.” But for many, especially those like me who grew up in a tight-knit barrio like El Azteca in Laredo, Texas, during the 1940s and 1950s, it is more than a suggestion to avoid the sun—it is a poetic gesture of care, a verbal embrace that lingers long after the words are spoken.
En el corazón de nuestras tradiciones mexicanas, hay frases que trascienden el lenguaje y se convierten en gestos de amor, memoria y comunidad. “Vete por la sombrita” es una de esas expresiones que, aunque sencilla en apariencia, encierra siglos de sabiduría popular y afecto cotidiano. En los barrios como El Azteca
de Laredo, Texas, esta despedida no solo aconsejaba evitar el sol abrasador, sino que ofrecía un abrazo verbal, una bendición disfrazada de consejo. Este relato es un homenaje a esa frase que nos conecta con nuestras raíces, con nuestros abuelos, y con una forma de vivir más pausada y más humana.
I was reminded of this phrase recently when a new friend mentioned it to me, saying he had heard it almost offhandedly from a friend in Eagle Pass, Texas. When I read it in his email, it brought a big smile to my face and reminded me of how small and serendipitous our world can be. That simple saying, "Te vas por la sombrita," carries so much warmth, care, and cultural richness—it is like a verbal hug from our shared heritage, quietly powerful and deeply familiar.
Reading that beautiful phrase—“Vete por la sombrita”—brought back a flood of memories. It was one I heard very
often growing up in the Barrio El Azteca. It is amazing how such a simple expression can bridge generations and geography, connecting us through the quiet poetry of everyday life.
Back then, our community was stitched together by shared stories, laughter, and the kind of respect that did not need to be taught—it was lived. "Vete por la sombrita" was often said with a smile, a nod, or a wave of the hand. It was a way of saying, “Take care of yourself,” without the formality. It was a blessing disguised as casual advice. And for a child growing up in a barrio where everyone looked out for each other, it was a reminder that you were never truly alone.
As I grew older, I began to understand the deeper layers of the phrase. It was not just about avoiding the hot scorching sun—it was about choosing the gentler path, seeking comfort where you could find it, and knowing that
someone cared enough to wish you well. It was a cultural inheritance, passed down through generations, woven into our everyday speech like a quiet prayer. Even now, when I read it, I feel the presence of my abuelos, my tíos, and the neighbors who shaped my world.
The phrase also reminds me of the subtle wisdom embedded in our traditions. In a world that often values speed and efficiency, "Vete por la sombrita" invites us to slow down, to be mindful, and to walk with grace. It is a reminder that kindness does not have to be loud to be profound. It can be whispered in parting, tucked into a farewell, and still carry the weight of love.
Today, in a world that often feels rushed and disconnected, "Vete por la sombrita" still holds power, as a reminder of a slower, kinder way of life. It is a phrase that carries the soul of Mexican heritage— humble, poetic, and
deeply human. Whether spoken in Eagle Pass, Laredo, San Antonio, or any corner of the Southwest, it connects us to our roots and to each other.
Hoy, en un mundo que corre sin mirar atrás, “Vete por la sombrita” sigue siendo un susurro de ternura que nos invita a caminar con calma, a cuidarnos unos a otros, y a recordar que la cultura vive en los detalles. A Mexican Independence Tribute to Singer-Songwriter Juan Gabriel by the San Antonio Philharmonic

Juan Gabriel recorded 15 albums and sold 20 million records. He was one of Mexico’s greatest singersongwriters, creating songs in many diverse styles–rancheras with mariachis, ballads, pop, rock en español, and disco.
In his 40-year career, Gabriel had an incredible, unprecedented string of hit records for himself and for leading Latin singers.

The world premiere of "Juan Gabriel: A Philharmonic Tribute," San Antonio Philharmonic's groundbreaking September 2025 concert, featured the music of legendary Mexican singer Juan Gabriel.
The Tribute marked the first time the musician’s estate has authorized the use of his voice and image projection with a live orchestra.
Award-winning Mexican Conductor Felipe Tristan emphasized the unique nature of the production, noting, “The audience will basically come see a concert of Juan Gabriel in video, in audio with the San Antonio Philharmonic live.”
The concert at the Scottish Rite Theater featured Juan Gabriel’s greatest hits reimagined for a full symphony orchestra, accompanied by guest vocalists and mariachis, with projections of Juan Gabriel's
The concert celebrated his legacy as Mexico’s iconic composer and performer who bridged popular music and classical symphonic expression.
I became a Juan Gabriel fan back in the early seventies when I heard his recording "No Tengo Dinero" [I don’t have money] as part of his debut album, "El Alma Joven” [the young soul], released in 1971.

Juan Gabriel [originally named Alberto Aguilera Valadez] was born in 1950 in Paracuaro, Michoacán, Mexico.

Felipe Tristán, a Monterrey, Mexico native and resident of New York City, conducted the orchestra.
Tristán is one of the most distinguished Mexican conductors of his generation, with a career that spans North America, Europe, Asia, and Latin America.
Known for his versatility across symphonic, operatic, and ballet repertoires, Tristán has built an international reputation for musical excellence, innovation, and leadership.
and Latin Grammy-nominated Mariachi Herencia de México, with whom he earned a 2022 Latin Grammy nomination.
The Mariachi Aztlán recently made headline news when they performed for King Charles of England upon the King’s official visit to Canada.
Chayito Champion sang several Juan Gabriel songs and danced to his music played by the Philharmonic.
Her famous grandmother, Flamenco dancer Teresa Champion, and Chayito’s mother, also a Flamenco dancer, sat proudly in the audience.
Praised by The New York Times for her haunting voice, Chayito Champion has performed with renowned artists and on stages like Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.
She has sung for world leaders, including Pope John Paul II and the King of Spain.
Garcia has performed with famous groups and artists, including Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, Celia Cruz, and Vicente Fernández at the Kennedy Center and the Hollywood Bowl.

in poverty when his mother decided to relocate the family to Juarez, Mexico. In Juarez, Gabriel spent his formative years in an orphanage.
He was a teen living in Juarez and singing in local bars when he decided to change his name from Alberto Aguilera Valadez to Juan Gabriel.
His first name, Juan, was a gesture to honor the name of his music mentor, Juan Contreras, whom he met at the orphanage, and the last name Gabriel honored his father’s first name, Gabriel Aguilera Rodríguez.
One of Gabriel’s most famous songs, La Noa Noa, came from his singing at the Noa Noa Bar in Juarez, Mexico.
On three occasions, he moved to Mexico City, and on the third trip, he was falsely accused of robbery and landed in jail.
The prison warden heard him sing and, following an investigation, released Gabriel and provided him with a home for two years.
The warden’s wife was especially helpful, introducing Gabriel to singer-actress Enriqueta Jiménez Chabolla, better known as La Prieta Linda.
With Tristán conducting, the San Antonio Philharmonic opened with the beautiful Huapango by José Pablo Moncayo.
Moncayo’s Huapango is considered a Mexican symphonic classic that evokes a sense of joy and pride with traditional Mexican rhythms and soaring melodies. In honor of the Mexican Independence weekend celebration, the orchestra played the full seven-minute version.
Texas Rio Grande City, Texas, native Ruben Nuñez sang some of Gabriel's greatest hits.
Nuñez has performed with celebrated ensembles such as Mariachi Aztlán, Mariachi Los Arrieros, Mariachi 7 Leguas,
Rhonda Garcia, who sang Amor Eterno [Eternal Love], one of Gabriel's most famous songs, has been a trailblazer for women in mariachi since becoming the first female member of Mariachi Campanas de América at age 18.
The Mariachi Campanas de America is a twelve-piece mariachi band founded in 1978 in San Antonio, Texas.
Known for their innovative blend of traditional mariachi music with Latin and mainstream pop rhythms, Mariachi Campanas incorporates instruments such as accordion, saxophone, keyboards, and a full drum kit.
We ended our Sunday outing with dinner at Isidore, an award-winning San Antonio restaurant at the Pearl.
We were pleased to meet Chef Jorge Hernandez, the Corporate Chef, and a graduate of the famed Culinary Institute of America.
A San Antonio native, Chef Hernandez’s experience includes the Michelin 2-star minibar by José Andrés in Washington, D.C. and Hotel Emma at the Pearl.
Isidore was recently recognized as one of the 50 best restaurants in America by The New York Times. Only four Texas restaurants made the prestigious Times list.

En una era donde la tecnología impregna cada aspecto de nuestras vidas, garantizar la seguridad y el bienestar mental de nuestros hijos en el mundo digital se ha convertido en una preocupación urgente.
Rania Mankarious, abogada y directora ejecutiva de Crime Stoppers of Houston, ha dedicado su carrera a enfrentar estos problemas de frente. Con formación en terapia matrimonial y familiar, Rania ha sido una apasionada defensora de las familias desde que se unió a Crime Stoppers en 2006.

Un Consejo Asesor de Restauración (RAB, por sus siglas en ingles) es un grupo local de partes interesadas compuesto por agencias gubernamentales, empresas y miembros de la comunidad que se reúnen regularmente para discutir la limpieza ambiental en instalacio nes militares activas o antiguas, como la antigua Base de la Fuerza Aérea Kelly en Texas. RAB mejoran la comunicación y la transparencia entre el ejército, los reguladores, los gobiernos locales y el público. Brindan a la comunidad una voz en el proceso de limpieza y ofrecen un foro para que la Fuerza Aérea comparta información y reciba comentarios.
Las responsabilidades de los miembros del RAB incluyen:
• Ser voluntario para servir un período de dos años
• Dedicar aproximadamente de cuatro a seis horas cada trimestre a los asuntos del RAB
• Asistir a todas las reuniones del RAB
• Brindar aportes individuales de manera abierta, honesta y constructiva
• Representar y comunicar las preocupaciones (inquietudes) de la comunidad al RAB
