Creative Director’s Letter Dear Ladies, As we wrap up another year I still can’t believe how amazing and quickly it has all gone by. From our fabulous yacht cover shoot with Shay Mitchell in the Spring Issue, to my mission trip in Nicaragua for clean water as the Goodwill Ambassador for Just a Drop, 2017 was a HUGE success for the LAPALME family. One of my favorite moments of working on this final issue of the year was the cover shoot with Katherine McPhee. I first saw her on American Idol all of those years ago and of course, i was obsessed with Smash. Her career has been on a rocketing trajectory and now our journeys have come together! I loved working with her! She knows herself and was a total pro. Katherine has a new album out of classics called, I Fall in Love too Easily and I thought it would be stunning to have her channel Sally Bowles from Cabaret. I hope all of you love the shoot as much as I do. The photography is wow and there was a lot of sparkles. It made me feel so gratified that Katherine was so obsessed with my jewelry line, Mr. Warburton. To say the least, the day went fabulously. Another highlight of this new issue is my time in Milan as the style ambassador of “MadMood Milano”. I lived in Milan so many years ago and it was incredible to go back and host Fashion Week. Our writer Myra Postolache explains on page 6 how magical the entire experience was. Last but not least we have our men’s cover star Matt Lanter. What I love about living and working in Hollywood is how it is a big, small town. I am a fan of his NBC show Timeless and kept thinking about how much I thought he was a great fit for us. He’s handsome, a fantastic actor and of course, he has a rugged yet approachable quality about him. Then, of course, I discovered that I actually know his wife Angela! She’s a fabulous beauty blogger and I have spent time with her at parties, that’s why I love Hollywood! This shoot is one of my favorite men’s covers we have done. On a final note, I want to thank you all for reading LAPALME. We work so hard on it and we can’t wait to share our plans for the next year. We keep growing and we couldn’t do it without you! Sincerely,

DEREK WARBURTON

MAD MOOD: MILANO Written by: Myra Postolache Photography by: Douglas Bassett

The second edition of Mad Mood Milano ended with great success at Milan Fashion Week. Aurora Leopardi is the winner of Mad Mood Fashion Talent Competition and international awards went to three italian brands Fedra Couture, Istituto Cordella, IJO’ Design and two bulgarian brands Provocative Fashion & PLIK Accessories. In the historic location of Palazzo Giureconsulti, a stone’s throw from the Duomo of Milan, from the 22nd until 24th of September 2017 during the fashion week of Milan, Mad Mood, which recalls its essence “Mediterranean”, aims to export the territory of Puglia and its lifestyle in the international fashion market, through the combination of fashion and food, and, therefore, through the tradition and innovation offered by italian fashion brands.

6

“This edition was even more successful than last year, including the most important international partnerships with different fashions week around the world,” says Marianna Miceli, founder and president of Mad Mood. Four thousands total accreditations, eighteen fashion shows, nineteen emerging designers for Fashion Talent Competition, sixty models, fifteen hair stylists and make up artists, hundreds of participants from all over the world at various times of the day, five international partnerships and three international awards. These are the dizzying numbers of the second edition of Mad Mood, the format of territorial promotion related to Puglia, italian region that closed the curtains on the three days in Milan during the fashion week. This year’s numbers, the presence of many national and international journalists, the interest of the fashion industry and the extraordinary presence of visitors, have confirmed the success of Mad Mood format as well as the strength of its identity in the italian region of Puglia. Main event partner of Mad Mood was Canepa Spa, the world leader in high-end silk producer. The company, based in Como, Italy, committed to research and develop the eco-sustainable chain, offered one special award to the winner of Mad Mood Fashion Talent Competition. The topic of the competition was “Water - Vital Energy”, which saw 19 young designers from ten different nationalities in front of a jury composed of some of the most prominent representatives of the fashion industry in Italy and worldwide: Cav. Mario Boselli, Honorary President of the National Chamber of Italian Fashion; Adriana Di Lello, Fashion News Director of Elle Italia Magazine; Angelo Ruggeri, fashion editor of Milano Finanza; Beppe Pisani, President of Cna Federmoda Lombardia; Roberto Portinari, General Secretary of Fashion Formative System Platform; Peter Lenna, General Manager of the Lombardy Region; Claudia Origgi, Head of Research for Roberto Cavalli’s prints; Olga Pirazzi, Head of Cittadellarte Fashion Office - Pistoletto Foundation; Anna Barattoni, Chief & Founder at AB LuxuryLab; Studio Re - Public Relations Agency of Milan. The winner was Aurora Leopardi and she won a fashion stage at Canepa in Como, Italy. The young designer, based in Sicily, showcased in the competition an outfit made of natural fabrics, silk and organza under the name of “Save The Water”. “Ethical fashion” award was given to Camilla Carrara for “having carried out an extremely accurate search of the whole topic - Water, Vital Energy”. Graduated in Fashion Design at Politecnico Milano, with an important research experience for Salvatore Ferragamo, the milanese designer won a master degree on eco-sustainable fashion at the Out of Fashion Milanese agency. More awards came from abroad and have been awarded designers who will take part in prestigious international fashion weeks. Fedra Couture by Federica D’Andria, who is already the protagonist of the first edition of Mad Mood and winner of the Serbia

Fashion Week prize last year, will bring her collection inspired by Puglia and Conti Zecca’s wine, to Feeric Fashion Week in July 2018, the greatest fashion week in Eastern Europe, based in Romania. To LVIV Fashion Week in Ukraine will showcase the bulgarian brands Plik by Vladislava Lupo and Provocative by Gloria Dimitrova, both designers graduated at New Bulgarian University. Instead, the “Ciao Bella” collection, which is inspired by Grottaglie’s ceramics and made by nine designers at the Istituto Cordella was awarded by Serbia Fashion Week with a full show at the end of this November. Annalisa Surace too will showcase at Serbia Fashion Week, architect who graduated in Fashion Design in Milan, thanks to the innovative nature of her proposal and her attention to the eco-sustainability of fabrics and the original line of clothing, is at the center of the attention of industry experts throughout the country. The three days of Mad Mood were focused on the Spring-Summer 2018 fashion shows by italian and international designers like Aidar Khan (Winner of Mad Mood Award at Eurasian Fashion Week), Sarah Jessy Jones, Cordella Institute, Fedra Couture, Regina Zaripova, Lui by Luiza, Yihua Wang and IJO ‘ Design, Hana Sirco, Luna Morgaciova (Winner of Mad Mood Award at Feeric Fashion Week), Marija Sabic, Ivanka Hristova, Plik & Provocative, Lesia Semi (Winner of Mad Mood Award at Lviv Fashion Week), Milica Trickovic (Winner of Mad Mood Award at Serbia Fashion Week), Young Designers by TSCOF, William Arlotti and Pimpi Smith. Next to Marianna Miceli during the three days was Derek Warburton, the official Ambassador of Mad Mood for this edition. Derek Warburton’s presence was very important for the event because the goal is to promote Mad Mood’s italian designers in Unites States too. “In recent months - continues Marianna Miceli - Mad Mood grew up a lot thanks to important international partnerships in Paris, Eastern Europe, as well as in China. The presence of the foreign representatives of various fashion weeks in Milan, but above all the possibility for our designers to participate in their events, allows us to consolidate Mad Mood on specific markets in the world and to promote abroad our talents and their excellence.’’ “Puglia is fashion, I like to repeat it - concludes Marianna Miceli - because it has a unique, recognizable and identity style in food and fashion. Valorizing it and promoting it is our mission.”

APERITIF & ADAPTOGENS Written by: Coleen Janeway, Epithereal Skincare, beauty expert and co-host of the #skinfoodbodylove series on AppleTV, Roku and KNEKTTV Photography by: Richard Horn

What better way to feel cozy this winter than sipping on cocktails designed with your health in mind. Warm, refreshing and restorative aperitifs and digestifs like these take us on a beautiful complex journey of the true craft cocktail. I am constantly searching for ways to incorporate elevated wellness into my daily routine and surprisingly mushroom adaptogens go quite well with festive holiday cocktails. So what’s new in the world of adaptogens a.k.a. stress fighters and the art of wellness craft cocktails? I had a chance to collaborate with Alley Lounge’s mixologists and boy did we have a great time tasting and discussing the benefits of happy hour and the holidays with these tasty drinks.

10

Known for its ultra-pure ingredients and a favorite among food health enthusiasts for its 100% Agave content and hand-craftsmanship. Mezcal is among the healthiest of choices you could make in a spirit. So what do you do with Mezcal to make it a fun holiday drink with additional health benefits? Add mushrooms of course! Delightfully named the M & M this drink is sure to please. Mezcal and OM Reishi Mushroom blended cocktail with Finger Lime garnish is the perfect wintery appetite stimulant to get your metabolism kickin. Harmonize your longevity, energy and spirit with this super immunity tonic. Holidays tempt us to fall off our healthy eating lifestyle, but with this sexy adaptogen cocktail you can aid your body in reversing some this damage and inflammation. Restore some of your lost energy with this little highball gem, Black Peppered Bourbon with OM Restore Blend mushrooms gives your body just the right amount of flavor and pizzaz, helping keep your festive spirits high. Black pepper is an excellent skin food because of its high mineral content and anti-inflammatory properties, not to mention it aids in weight loss by improving digestion and kick starting your metabolism. The combination of mushrooms in this drink also has amazing properties such as prebiotics, digestive enzymes, amino acids and antioxidant. Easy to drink and almost guilt free! My penchant for whiskey and bourbon is fueled by the colder weather, and another special cocktail I am excited to share is a blend of Irish whiskey, adaptogens and coffee. It’s never a challenge for me to find ways to incorporate my favorite OM Beauty blend of mushrooms into coffee. We take it up a notch this holiday season by adding Slane Irish Whiskey for perfection in hearthwarming frothy beverages. Now you can exude radiance and defy age while enjoying triple casted Irish whiskey, it is just the right about of sweet and spicy to feel like dessert but with less calories. I hope these drink ideas and recipes motivate your next occasion. Be sure to check out the very talented team of mixologists at Alley Lounge in Culver City, CA, a fantastic speakeasy to put you in the right mood for kisses under the mistletoe.

WORTHY OF LOVE Sista Mary Has Real Soul Written by: Merle Ginsberg Photography by: Mykle Parker It’s a rooftop birthday party on a balmy night; the majestic skyline of Los Angeles filled with shiny high rises, the twinkly glint of city lights, and for once - literal stars only. It’s a total carnival environment, built for frolicking little kids. A real unicorn graces the proceedings, and the kids’ faces light up like veritable Christmas trees. Okay, so it’s a little pony with a cone on its forehead – it’s still damn cute. There’s amusement park booths, candy galore, popcorn, gifts and the requisite cake and candles for at least a hundred.

LAPALMEMAGAZINE.COM

Brentwood? Bev Hills? Bel Air? “From Brentwood to here, it’s only 12 miles,” notes Mary Davis. “But it’s the longest 12 miles in the world – a world apart.” Mary, better known as “Sista Mary,” is not what her name portends: not a rapper or a nun. In fact, she’s a white Jewish girl from Atlanta, Georgia. Ever since she was a little girl, Mary’s main mission was helping the homeless. “My parents ran soup kitchens,” she explains. “They always had compassion and imbued that to me – to give back. I would find myself talking to homeless people wherever I went. I grew up knowing I wanted to work with them.” Which is how, in 2013, Sista Mary found herself on L.A.’s Skid Row, at the Union Mission, the most significant shelter in the city that actually cares for the homeless – and their children. “My husband and I suffered a miscarriage,” she says – now the mom of a healthy newborn baby. “And we couldn’t celebrate its one month birthday. So we decided to help homeless kids celebrate their birthdays.” With her own money, Sista Mary started “Worthy of Love,” a program at the Union Mission once a month for the last four years that celebrates the birthdays of homeless kids living at the shelter with their moms or dads. “Their parents, for whatever reason, sort of chose homelessness,” says Sista Mary. “But they didn’t. We had a nine year old girl cry at her birthday party. ‘I never had one before,’” she told me. “When I was growing up, my biggest worry at my birthday (she’s 36) was – chocolate or vanilla?” Now the kids at the mission – it started with 15 of them – and grew to 160, “live around the smell of crack cooking, leftover needles on the street, heroin, filth and squalor.” Not a pretty picture. Not even a decent picture. Meanwhile, Brentwood really isn’t all that far away – Mary’s day job is at Kidville in Brentwood, an enrichment center that teaches dance, music, art. “These kids have everything,” she says. “But I’ve taught them how to give back – and they’re happy to help the homeless kids on Skid Row.” So why birthday parties for unfortunate kids? “My husband and I wanted to give these kids a great memory to carry their whole lives. Birthday parties do have an impact.

They get to learn that the day they were born was truly special. They remember it the rest of their lives.” These days, as the number of kids at the shelter has swelled so much, Sista Mary gets donations, some grants, and has a core of volunteers to help out. “It takes a village,” she signs. “And one mom told me, ‘This is the first picture of my baby that I have,’” due to photo booths set up at each party. Why are there so many more kids at the shelter than 4 years ago? “Housing prices have gone up so much,” she explains. “And work is harder to get.” L.A. only has two places homeless people can gather now: Santa Monica/Venice – or Skid Row. “If they camped out in Beverly Hills,” she says, “the cops would move them here. I had a man with his 9 year old daughter, he told me, ‘I didn’t want to come to Skid Row – but my wife passed away, and we had no money. This is the only place in L.A. where you can get social services.” Mary explains that in this neighborhood, the homeless can get social security checks, addiction serves. “It’s the only place in L.A. somebody will help the homeless,” she sighs. And how on earth did a white Jewish girl wind up becoming “Sista Mary” - ? “I traveled a lot in school,” she muses, “through a program called Semester at Sea. I went to Africa and worked with Desmond Tutu. He taught me that every child is my child, every person is my brother or sister. Some of the local girls ther said, ‘Girl! You a sista!’ Ever since 2007, I’ve been Sista Mary. People always expect me to be a nun. So I tell them it’s S-I-S-T-A – not SISTER. But, hey – I’m happy to get that too.”

THE LISTENING ROOM DEMI LOVATO

DEMI LOVATO TELL ME YOU LOVE ME (ISLAND)

Demi isn’t asking for your attention anymore, she’s demanding it By: Dakota LaPalme @kotasaurusrex

With one of the most powerful voices in pop, Demi isn’t asking for your attention anymore, she’s demanding it. Demi Lovato promised her newest work would be her most honest, mature and open albums yet; and she certainly hasn’t let fans down with Tell Me You Love Me (2017). The album opener and lead single “Sorry Not Sorry” is a contagious empowerment anthem that gives you enough space to see Demi as something other than a no-holds-barred belter. As her peers were slowing things down on alt-pop mid-tempos, Demi stayed true to her roots and added a dash of soul to compliment her larger-than-life voice. Reinforcing her maturity, “Daddy Issues” is one of the album’s strongest tracks, maybe even the best, with Demi warning a potential lover about her romantic downfalls. Demi offers breathy vocals before surprising the listener with the killer belt we’ve all come to love, she can’t wrap her head around whether she wants this romance or not. “Ruin The Friendship” is a sensual track that has Demi letting go and hypnotizing the listener with a softer sound. Her vocal delivery is enthralling over the throbbing production as she irresistibly moves from throaty commands to breathy pleas. “Only Forever” continues the sensual seduction while production from Oak Felder is raw and focuses on the standout vocal delivery. Lust is a reoccurring theme on Tell Me You Love Me, but “Concentrate” makes for one of Demi’s most captivating vocals ever. Lyrically, she straddles the line between explicit and almost spiritual, but she manages to make the effort all about making love instead of rolling around in the sack with a fling. Closing the album on a high note, the 25 year old serenades a lover on “Hitchhiker.” Instead of sprinkling one or two hits among a lot of filler, Demi has finally recruited the right team and found her voice over sparkling mid-tempos and frenetic bangers.

KATHARINE McPHEE I FALL IN LOVE TOO EASILY Written by: Jessica Finn Photographer: Enrique Vega Creative Director: Derek Warburton Style Assistant: Ashley Aguirre Make-up: Amy Oresman Make-up Assistant: Hannah Biddle Nails: The Glam App Model: Zack Kramer Location: No Vacancy Hair: Ericka Verrett for TMG - LA using Oribe & Dyson Katharine McPhee has become one of the biggest stars to be catapulted from obscurity into a household name after her time on American Idol. She stands out from her fellow Idol alums as she has has been almost continuously acting in major television shows, like her starring role in Smash, while only occasionally releasing albums. Her eager fans knowthis year contains one of those occasions. Speaking with Lapalme, Katharine tells us about her exciting journey of getting back to her musical roots. She talks about her new album release; just in time for the holidays, how she stays sane with the pressures of Hollywood, and her hopes to have little ones in the not so distant future. Katharine is speaking to us in the midst of a fully packed schedule.

LAPALMEMAGAZINE.COM

‘I just left Rockefeller Center ‘ she says, where she was promoting her highly anticipated new album ‘I Fall In Love Too Easily.’ After our interview she’s off to another New York landmark, the famed Carlyle Hotel’s Jazz venue. ‘I have shows here in New York all week, I don’t get to do this as much as I’d like to, and jazz is a new genre for me.’ Katharine has previously performed at some of the largest venues yet somehow the tiny 100 seat setting at the Carlyle, she says, is more intimidating. ‘It’s pitch dark in there and you can’t see anyone’s faces. This is much scarier than when I performed Madison Square Garden with Andrea Bocelli’ she notes. While juggling her new album and performing, she’s also starring in her fourth season on the CBS hit Scorpion which she’s currently filming. ‘We have three months left shooting Scorpion.’ It’s an interesting time on the show, and behind the scenes, for Katharine. Her character Paige Dineen, in what has been anticipated by fans through the seasons, has finally become romantically involved with the character of Walter O’Brien, played by her actual behind the scenes former boyfriend, who she dated for two years. How does one navigate a situation with a former flame at work and now have to kiss them for the gig? Easily, as Katharine explains. ‘We dated for two years and we are still close. We are great friends and we just had a dinner party.’ It really boils down to how you handle the relationship beyond the breakup, according to Katharine. ‘We dated for a long time, and we have respect for each other. It’s like kissing your best friend. We are fortunate to have a really nice relationship.’ It takes a certain amount of personal growth that comes with the life experiences and maturity to navigate an onscreen relationship with an ex, but Katharine has also discussed the importance of keeping up with her mental well being. She recently opened up that she’s at her best when she is able to go to therapy.

With a hectic schedule such as she has, self love goes a long way. ‘That’s why the more I try to put restrictions on myself and the more I tell myself I can’t do something or eat something or that I must workout, the more it makes me indulgent and crazy. It’s my personality, the more I do that, the more consumed I become.’ ‘I used to be one of those people who would make it out the door, but everything was rushed. The older I get the more I move slower. I no longer rush out of bed, that’s sort of my meditation.’ ‘I like to get work outs in, but prefer sleep instead of getting up if it’s grueling schedule. I like to enjoy the things I enjoy and I try not to get too extreme about anything.’ She adds, ‘The less obsessive I am, the better I feel in clothes.’ And while we are on clothes, Katharine says she adored the styling for our Lapalme shoot, specifically she says, she felt amazing in the classic clothes and jewelry. ‘I was thinking about the shoot it was very Broadway-esq. It was kind of a nod to my experience on Smash and it got me excited because the shoot was similar, and the photographs are so beautiful. It reignited my desire to do a classic Broadway show.’ It’s almost astonishing Katharine has not yet done Broadway with her mix of acting and singing, and past American Idol alums having success, it would have seemed like an immediate progression. As far as the type of role she envisions herself in, she says being cast in something akin to the feel of Thoroughly Modern Millie would be her dream. ‘That music was classic Broadway. I’m always inspired by the jewelry and costumes.’ The musical centers on America’s Jazz age, which would perfectly fit into Katharine’s recent musical progression into the genre. Katharine has secured her place as an working actress and singer- which has given her the opportunity to think about what else could add to her happiness in the coming years. ‘My ideal situation, I would love to get married and have kids, it would be nice if that happens.’ She says she didn’t realize, in the midst of her rising fame over the past several years, what she wanted personally, but this is now a woman who is settled in her career, and clearly sees what the future can hold.

Histreet designer and #girlboss Demi Thomas tells Lapalme everything a young female entrepreneur needs to know on how to win at the business game. Interview By: Ashley Aguirre Photography By: TJ Manou

38

Accessories designer and curator Demi Thomas is a real-life girl boss and is in the process of building her empire. Demi cultivated her love and eye for fashion as a wholesaler in corporate America. Today she travels the world for her brand HiStreet to bring her clients the coolest trends from around the globe at a very friendly price point. We chatted with Demi about her as a woman entrepreneur and what advice she has for girls for starting up a business of their own.

As a woman do you find it more difficult to be an entrepreneur? Are there specific advantages, disadvantages to being a woman business owner? Yes and No, it depends on your starting point. Are you single and unattached or are you married with children. There’re more choices and opportunities for woman today than decades ago. No matter where your starting point is as an entrepreneur you are required to give more than one hundred percent of your time. It also depends on what industry you decided to venture into. If a woman entrepreneur owned a lingerie company vs. an automotive company it will be easier for her in a woman dominated industry rather than a male dominated industry.

The consumer has unlimited choices. They don’t have to be brand loyal. They can window-shop from their home and shop prices conveniently. More consumers are shopping online and the online retail industry is becoming more aggressively data driven. What is the ultimate goal for your business and where do you see it going down the road? Developing and introducing new product lines and categories so we can appeal to a broader consumer audience. Consumers want options and one of the greatest merchandisers in the world Marshall Field stated: “Always give the customer what they want!”

There are many obstacles when it comes to starting a business how did you overcome fear and doubt?

For women entrepreneurs, if you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?

Go for it and throw yourself into the task at hand. It’s the uncertainty and inexperience of the tenderfoot that causes these feelings. Getting a flat tire on the road is the perfect example of an unanticipated event that can happen at any given time. You don’t worry about it daily. When it happens you fix it and move on.

Don’t be afraid to go after your dreams and goals because you will figure it out along the way. Don’t get tied up in what ifs. That stops the desire and creative process.

What are your daily steps to creating a successful day? Preparation & Multitasking! My schedule is always hectic and it’s prepared a day in advance. At times, everything can’t be done in one day so I pick and choose my battles. Duties that can’t wait I complete first and the duties that can is carried over the following day but I always complete the carried over duties that following day. How does your company thrive in an industry where there are so many online companies? Diversity, we are always thinking outside of the box. Not being afraid to try new things and create new ideas – stand out among the crowd. I always encourage my team to be free creatively and take risks. What has been the most effective way of raising awareness of your business and getting new customers? SOUTHERN CHARM Written by: Chiara Casiraghi @casiraghistyle

A celebrated fixture on the Houston social scene, philanthropist and FIT board member Melissa Mithoff welcomes us into her home this holiday season. Lapalme is all eyes and ears as she shares her favorite seasonal picks and her tips for hosting a spectacular soiree.

How did you feel being accepted as the first women outside of NY to be invited to sit on the FIT board? It was a true honor to be accepted as the only member, at the time, to not live in New York. Truthfully I was very flattered and surprised. To be welcomed among such a diverse and impressive group of women made it even more special for me. It was a really big honor for me. How do you feel your travel has influenced your life? I have developed an appreciation for art through my travels. When younger I traveled often with my parents and thus was exposed to different cultures at a young age. From that, I developed my interest and knowledge in art and artifacts. Now as a parent I have a duty to do the same with my children and broaden their scope of life by experiencing other cultures. That’s really important to me. Describe a favorite family tradition during the holidays? I love being at our ranch together! Spending quality time with loved ones, getting the kids together, sitting next to the fire, riding horses, all the activities the season allows. Also just getting the family all together as we aren’t always able to make it to the Ranch during the year is something we really appreciate since it’s so rare. I also enjoy hosting my entire family over on Christmas day. I really looking forward to having all the cousins over and the family and celebrate Christmas. What are your tips for hosting fabulous holiday parties? I focus on decor. I love to be fully decorated, candles everywhere, the works! The bar is very important, drinks flowing and enough staff to make sure everyone is taken care of. Of course, the key is the right food. Nothing kills a party faster than people leaving because they are hungry and want to grab dinner. If you want people to stay you have to offer a variety of food. Healthy, semi-healthy, fattening, you have to take everyone into consideration from the vegetarians to the meat eaters. My goal when I select the menu, which I just did yesterday for Schmooze benefiting Legacy, is not to go heavily one way or the other and find a great balance. What are the ‘must-haves’ in your winter wardrobe right now? Right now a chunky mid-heel boot I can dress up or down is a staple. I’m really into red this season and I am loving more bright colors in my closet.

6 DESTINATIONS TO FEED YOUR CULTURE-SEEKING SOUL IN SANTA FE Written by: Chiara Casiraghi-Brody

56

The land of enchantment, as it is often described, has a subtle way of drawing artists and those with passionate souls to its pueblo style city. The light that casts its signature glow on the Santa Fe landscape is often compared to lighting in the South of France. This illumination has served as inspiration for many artists over the years. But it’s natural riches is not the only draw, as Santa Fe is full of historical and artistic significance for America. From The Oldest Church in the USA, the San Miguel Chapel, to 108 East Place, not to be outdone by the namesake museum of Georgia O’Keeffe the “Mother of American Modernism”, there is a magnetism that draws creatives here. Many transplants describe their relocation to Santa Fe due to an instinctual force they felt on their first visit. I had the opportunity to tour the picturesque dreamland for two days and three nights. From art-lover to culture-seeker and foodie, Santa Fe is resplendent with activities and sights. After my first successful visit only time will tell if I am called to relocate my life to an adobe house and pick up a paint brush.

Georgia O’Keeffe Center

A small pueblo style building, while very modest and unassuming exterior is home to frescos from the 1700s. Oral history holds that San Miguel Chapel was built around 1610, and it has been rebuilt and restored several times over the past 400 years.

Georgia O’Keeffe was a pioneer as a woman on the art scene of the 19th century. Today she is known as the Mother of American Modernism and was one of the first artists in America, male or female, to practice pure abstraction. The center is a wonderful celebration of her work and life as well as insight into the history of art in America.

La Posada de Santa Fe, a Tribute Portfolio Resort & Spa

This mansion, built by German immigrants Abraham and Julia Staab in 1882, was a lively center of society at the time. The parties Julia hosted were attended by men like President Rutherford Hayes, General Sherman, and Governor Lew Wallace. Today the house is the heart of a unique and independent resort, part of Marriott’s Tribute Portfolio, attracting art and design lovers from around the world. Known as the “Art Hotel of Santa Fe,” the patronage of artists at this establishment predates the now famous art galleries on Canyon Road. Before it was turned into a hotel, artists were invited to live for periods at a time on the Staabs’ property, so that they could focus on their creative process. Today at La Posada, the art curation is thoughtfully overseen by Sara Eyestone who hosts many art related programs during the week. Sara’s informal art talks draw a range of art enthusiasts including celebrities like Owen Wilson who have been in attendance. Furthermore, all the art is sold at the artist’s studio prices, which makes this destination a must for collectors of works by established living American artists.

Canyon Road

Over 100 fine art galleries and artist studios line the one-mile long street that is Canyon Road. From Native American to abstract, modern, traditional, western, expressionistic, contemporary, there is a diverse array of artwork from established and emerging artists. Galleries are the main attraction on Canyon Road but the restaurant and shopping scene is quite pleasing as well with award-winning restaurants like Geronimo and The Compound to name a few. 109 East Palace, Secret Portal to the Manhattan Project

Native American Vendors Program of the Palace of the Governors

While there are many bustling markets periodically throughout the year in Santa Fe, the Native American Vendors Program of the Palace of the Governors is a year-round outdoor market specifically for Native American artisans. The goods range from silver, turquoise and copper jewelry to handmade and painted clay pottery. It is a humble set up in front of the Palace of the Governors, a building that was built by the Spanish in 1610. From this market, I acquired some souvenirs including a copper bracelet with engravings craved onto the top for adornment and two handmade and painted pots for display. Don’t forget to withdraw some cash before you hit this market. While some vendors are set up to accept credit card, not all are able and it makes it easier to negotiate pricing with green in hand.

Some landmarks are grandiose and extravagant others are small and unassuming yet heavy in gravitas. The perfect location for the portal to a secret mission The Manhattan Project, 109 East Palace is hidden in plain sight. While it is just a one minute walk from the town center it is hard to find, as it is easy to walk past without much notice. For those interested in WWII history, it is a humbling place to stand upon. In 1940 it was known only as PO Box 1663 Santa Fe, New Mexico. Oppenheimer, McMillan, Bethe, Fermi, Chadwick, Kistiakowski all passed through this portal. Einstein, however, was too well known at the time and would attract too much attention, thus he was snuck in another way. One can reflect on the great minds, both male and female that passed through shop doors and how they impacted the world.
