Editor’s Letter

What a year it has been. It’s almost a new year and I am looking forward to the excitement that the upcoming year is poised to bring. We have put together a fantastic team to keep our continuing promise of delivering a quality book to you, our reader, that we can be proud of and that you are pressed to hold in your hands and experience. This issue brings the multi-talented Katharine McPhee and Matt Lanter to newsstands for the LAPALME Winter Issue. LAPALME Magazine Creative Director, Derek Warburton and his team has exceeded our expectations styling the covers throughout the year and this book has been no exception. The cover shoots are always fun and energetic with the usual dose of class and sophistication that our brand and readers expect. It is amazing to have Katharine McPhee, The aspiring talent from American Idol, the hit show Smash and leading lady on CBS’s high-octane drama Scorpion gracing the women’s side of our Winter Book. Her enthusiasm and drive is so infectious. Katharine easily fell into character to bring the spirit of the shoot to life. Matt Lanter, the voice of Anakin Skywalker from Star Wars: The Clone Wars and 90120 had a great time shooting with Kevin Roldan and Jon Wong. It’s interesting the opportunities that have come his way from voice actor to leading man. Matt currently stars as soldier Wyatt Logan, a time traveler, in Timeless on NBC. Our team has put together a great book heading into the next year, from handpicking some great gifts for the man in your life to showcasing some awesome fashion for the season. We love to hear from you so feel free to shoot us a message via our website and let us know what you would like to see more of! Happy Holidays!

FIN

RESTAURANT Written By: Coleen Janeway Beauty Expert, co-host of #skinfoodbodylove series on AppleTV, Roku and KNEKTTV

Winter gatherings with friends after work is something most of us enjoy doing, and discovering new places is part of the fun. Fin Restaurant in Culver City did not disappoint on the day my crew and I had an impromptu meetup. Known for its great tapas and custom drink menu, I decided to grab a seat at the bar before my friends arrived to soak in the atmosphere and order one of their signature drinks. I selected the Washington, inspired by “Boulevardier” which is a traditional prohibition cocktail and named “Washington” because Fin is located on Washington Boulevard. It’s made with Buffalo Trace whiskey, Smaro CiaCaro, Gancia Sweet Vermouth and Angustora bitters. The Washington is garnished with a flame torched orange peel for a wonderful smokey orange zest and a dark maraschino cherry; incredibly delicious and a perfect way to start the evening. Besides being pleased by the depth and flavor of this craft cocktail, I found the entire staff, bartender and restaurant manager to be attentive and genuinely welcoming to all patrons walking through their doors.

Once seated at our table we choose a few appetizers to share. We began with the Wild Salmon with black truffle shavings and lemon citrus, ponzu dressing. The salmon just melted in your mouth and was bursting with a wonderful hits of salty citrus and earthy truffles. I think we may have ordered another round of this one! Tacos in LA are pretty much a right of passage if you live here. Anytime I see a menu offering their version it becomes a must try for me. Jicama Fish Tacos arrived next and what a perfect choice. Generally I am not a fan of bready things but the lightly breaded fish was tender, flavorful and not at all greasy. It was combined with a tangy asian slaw and the “shell” was the root vegetable Jicama. This paired nicely with the warm crispy fish. The next appetizer I have to say was a combination of pairings I would not have expected to marry well together, however I dare say it was by far my favorite of the evening, Kiwi Scallops. The presentation was gorgeous and the flavor combination complex and satisfying to the palate. They were caramelized on the outside, light, fluffy, sitting on grilled slices of Kiwi and topped with toasted Lotus root. The flavors of soy, sake and Mirin sauce heightened the excellent sear on the scallop. For my main course, I decided on New Zealand lamb chops with sesame ichimi glaze and rosemary shishito potatoes. While I am primarily a plant based eater who enjoys fish and shellfish on occasion, lamb is something I grew up eating and choose to occasionally have a few bites of when in the right setting. Fin’s version of the lamb chop was tender, juicy and not overdone. They are marinated overnight in soy, red onion, garlic, mirin, and rosemary. The chop had a nice sear on the outside which I feel is important because generally lamb tends to be fatty and if not seared can sometimes taste greasy instead of flavorful. Served medium rare, it’s worth adding to your order. The glaze was a nice addition of flavor and the side of potatoes with smoky Shishito peppers offered a satisfying finish to a pleasant meal. Fin’s menu is on point and their staff are helpful in explaining each dish. The main dining room was warm and inviting and we could have hung out for hours chatting and soaking in the great vibes surrounding us. This little gem is worth the Uber it takes to get there or valet is available if you want to drive. A reservation is not required but is suggested if you have a party of 4 or more. Great for groups and celebrations too!

PLASTIC SURGERY: WHAT MEN WON’T TALK ABOUT The industry of mens grooming has increasingly changed over the past 10 or more years. Mainly because procedures once considered to be taboo have now become commonplace in the male lifestyle.

Written by: Coleen Janeway, Beauty Expert, co-host of #skinfoodbodylove series on AppleTV, Roku and KNEKTTV 14

LAPALME wanted to know more about why this change has occurred, have technologies made this transition easier for men, or is male aesthetics just more widely accepted as the new “normal”? We sought out the expertise of three top male doctors who specialize in male surgical procedures and modern male aesthetics. Our experts enlightened us on the latest, effective most popular procedures, patient care, and the secrets behind creating longevity and youth in the male physique. In our efforts to seek out this knowledge, we wanted to make sure we would have opinions that spanned coast to coast as well as an international look at what is hot and now! Are things really so different coast to coast? It turns out there are differences in what guys are seeking as far as treatments and surgeries! According to Plastic Surgery Specialist, T.Y. Stephen Ip, M.D. who has practices in New York and California; on the east coast, male patients tend to get more facial procedures like rhinoplasty, whereas the west coast based patient is definitely more body conscious and looking to do procedures like gynecomastia and liposuction. Yoel Shahar, M.D. another one of our plastic surgeon experts who also practices in New York and Tel Aviv, Israel agrees with Dr. Ip. He also points out most men these days are self aware and are wanting to stay ahead of aging and on top of their professional game by doing procedures such as: blepharoplasty, fat injections and facelifts. In Israel many of Dr. Shahar’s patients are interested in treatments to reverse sun damage. He suggests medical grade chemical peels as a way of reversing damage to the skin. Peels are a great and effective way of encouraging much needed exfoliation and in addition will stimulate the body’s own collagen growth. Male patients are looking for easy, simple solutions resulting in natural looking enhancement. Dr. Shahar tells us the male blepharoplasty and fat injection procedures are quite different than when he works with a feminine face. Not only does this procedure require the technical skill to perform the actual surgery but an artistic eye to customise a masculine look. Dr. Shahar is careful not to elevate the lateral areas in the eyebrow which can create a more feminine appearance. The best part is the recovery is generally less than two weeks.

In considering what is right for you, there are many technological advancements in how we address the aging male face, Shawn Abrishamy, M.D. non-surgical aesthetic and dermatological specialist based out of Los Angeles, tells us. His male clientele gets really excited when he mentions the gold standard in laser treatments. There have been many advancements in Co2 Laser treatments (Carbon Dioxide Lasers). If downtime is not a factor, and you are looking to tighten skin, virtually eliminate sun damage, brown spots, improve texture and potentially prevent certain type of skin cancers, then this treatment is for you. It is less recovery than a full facelift, but at least 14 days of downtime depending on your skin type, age and overall bodies ability to heal. Results can be very dramatic and it’s an excellent alternative to surgery if you are determined to be a good candidate for Co2. Now to the down and dirty, what is the quickest way to look refreshed and be a better version of yourself? Hands down it’s going to be an application of Botox or Dysport. These are two neuromodulators that are wonderfully consistent in how they relax the muscles on your forehead, between your eyes, and crows feet Dr. Abrishamy tells us. Collagen stimulators are another stealthy way to create volume and soften wrinkles on heavier, thicker male skin. An application of these products will keep the face looking natural and not fake or overfilled. Men don’t like to fuss over looking younger says Dr. Abrishamy, they just want consistent results. It was unanimous in all of my discussions with these amazing practitioners, that they all had such concern for their male patients and how the patient felt about themselves. Handsome, hot and sexy in their own skin is generally the common goal. As professionals, I asked them how do they manage expectations of patients. A through consultation is absolutely required says Dr. Ip. He likes to review their concerns, educate and discuss outcome and overall results to make sure post-procedure expectations are met. Dr. Abrishamy tells us it’s the hardest and most important part of his job. He tells patients expect improvement, not perfection. Dr. Shahar tells us it is a good practice to explain limitations of each procedure. We agree! Being well informed sets the stage for both a happy patient and a successful procedure.

15

LAPALMEMAGAZINE.COM

Stigma, what stigma? Just take the leap, men should not feel self conscious about doing surgical or non-surgical procedures. One of Dr. Ip’s favorite procedures is gynecomastia surgery, due to the advancement in the lasers he is now working with. There is laser liposuction and ultrasonic liposuction. The Vaser and Power Assist Liposuction or (PAL) works similar to a powertool in the way the laser moves. These lasers facilitate the removal of tissue in the breast, and the method chosen generally depends on the patients tissue density. So think customizable for your own body type which leads to the best result for the patient. Ever wonder how some men have the “silver fox” look perfected? It is likely they started maintenance early, from diet, lifestyle, skincare, sun protection and aesthetic treatments. Dr. Abrishamy tells us topical pharmaceutical grade Retinols and topical Vitamin C’s do help to maintain the dermis and encourage much needed exfoliation. It makes sense to seek professional opinions and create a maintenance plan as early as your mid to late 20’s. Once you wait too long, the remedy to treat the aging process becomes more apparent and noticeable. Men should start to think about doing facelifts in their 50’s and 60’s for best results. Here’s looking at you kid! There is no better time than now to consider what is possible for the best version of you. Skincare is a start, but surgical and aesthetic procedures will give you the best lasting overall results. Most consultations are complimentary and our experts agree the male patient is an exciting and welcomed addition to their practices. The important take away is to know your surgeon or doctor. Having a trusted provider and building that relationship gets you to your goals.

HISKEY REINVENTED TRADITION WITH A TWIST By: Kevin LaPalme @kevinlapalme

18

Who doesn’t appreciate a good Whiskey? This is the time to be alive! The things they are doing with bourbon now are revolutionary! Flavors that push the boundaries of your palate without straying too far from the traditions. From bacon-infused to regional favorites to avante-garde touches with Madeira. We have picked six bottles that are a must enjoy with friends or just simply savoring alone by a roaring fire.

OL’ MAJOR BACON FLAVORED ($25) This Nashville-made whiskey lays claim as the first commercial bourbon infused with real bacon. Mmmm Bacon... It mixes vanilla and mesquite-like smoke on the palate, but the real action is in the aroma, which smells remarkably similar to raw bacon. Old Major Bacon Bourbon holds nothing back. It is not a drink for the faint of heart.

RED HANDED ($30) What makes Austin’s Treaty Oak Distilling’s approach to barreling this blend of whiskeys unique is that they source their whiskey from three different distilleries in as many states--Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee, Blended in new American oak casks with seasoned staves, then “aged in the hot Texas sun. For 9 months. You pick up a little red fruit on the palate with no harsh tannins or off-flavors. This is a solid little whiskey that is easy to drink neat and worth the trouble to seek it out.

TRAILS END ($50) The base of Trail’s End Bourbon is Kentucky straight bourbon aged for seven and eight years. Then Oregon’s Hood River Distillers aged it with staves made from Oregon oak. The aroma of Trail’s End Bourbon suggests a fairly sweet whiskey with notes of raisins and corn. There’s a lot of oak on this bourbon, which comes through as vanilla and toasted nuts, along with woody tannins.

WEST OF KENTUCKY NO.1 ($60) The red bridge is a nod to the dash of locally smoked California Cherry wood-smoked barley added to the American yellow corn and rye. Aged in new, charred American oak for no less than one year, dark dulcet flavors emerge without too much smoke or sweetness. Notes of Marachino Cherry, light smoke, allspice, vanilla and sarsaparilla. This is California’s Bourbon Whiskey.

NEW SOUTHERN REVIVAL— MADEIRA FINISH ($70) Hailing from Charleston, S.C., this limited-edition bottling by High Wire Distilling is made with four local heirloom non-GMO grains and finished with Madeira, a fortified wine with deep Charleston history. It tastes a little bit like fruitcake in a bottle.

NO. 14 ($45) This Vermont Spirits bottling unites two American Classics, Bourbon whiskey and Vermont Maple Syrup. It’s a bridge between straight-up whiskey and a liqueur. Look for a maple-y aroma with just a flash of sweetness on the palate with a warm and lasting finish.

THE LISTENING ROOM JORJA SMITH

JORJA SMITH PROJECT 11 (FAMM)

A soul melting voice, radiant face and keen sense of self-awareness By: Dakota LaPalme @kotasaurusrex

For three years now everyone’s eyes have been focused on Jorja Smith. With the help of heavyweights like Kali Uchis and Drake, an inestimable sum of attention has cemented onto the British R&B singer/songwriter since this spring. Being in Smith’s shoes would terrify the average person her age, some would even keep blogs or journals to record this type of moody nostalgia and coming of age stories. Smith, on the other hand, wrote songs about her youth experience, love, hate and living in a boy’s world. All those written memories are just one of the pillars of Smith’s success - a soul melting voice, radiant face and keen sense of self-awareness are the others. “On My Mind,” one of Smith’s latest offerings exemplifies her mainstream potential, along with an ability to adjust to new sonic atmospheres. Smith’s formula has always been heart-melting soul, never rushed and rocking at mid-tempo. At the same time, “On My Mind” is a fresh and unfamiliar track that makes an artist’s longtime listeners crave a bit of the old, not because the new isn’t any good, but because the old is a different kind of good. Stunning is the only word to describe Jorja Smith’s debut, but “new classic” is more adequate. Given a decade or so, Project 11 (2016) will be christened as as apt reference point for post millennial neo-soul. Project 11 is not just a handful of stories crafted into track, but instead a multidimensional exploration of the aching human heart via soul in its most honest forms: music and poetry. Even the backing piano is an ornamental touch; her voice and stories admire each other and meet in sheer perfection, showing strength as a duo that doesn’t need much help.

‘Around the end of high school and the beginning of college age’ he says, as he was working at a golf course, ‘a fax had come through to the lobby that they were filming this movie, Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius and they said anyone who wanted to be an extra can come on down.’ Matt caught another lucky break when he arrived for filming. ‘They picked me out to be a featured extra, and this is where I got the bug, seeing the cameras and seeing the lights, and I thought I could create the magic, I thought maybe I could actually do this.’ He moved out to Los Angeles to pursue his new found dream. Amazingly, he got his first big break in no time. ‘I had booked my first big job on 90210 about six months after moving to LA, I was on regularly, and I still get recognized from that.’ He says, while he’s been blessed to maintain a career in Hollywood, he would like to branch out into other role types. ‘I get a lot of opportunity in dramas, but I would love to do something in comedy.’ The actor is about to take on another major role, he’s becoming a first time dad. His wife, Angela, is pregnant with a baby girl ‘She is due January 11th and we have a podcast called Hello Bump to document our time with her being pregnant, emotionally and her physically. We started doing it just for us, so we could listen back on our experience, but then and we figured we could do this and maybe it will help others too. She talks about the grossest, nastiest stuff about her being pregnant, and she is like why don’t people tell you this stuff. People aren’t honest about this stuff. We have been doing it every week.’ Angela, who is a style blogger and has a sizable following on her social network accounts, has been having a relatively nice pregnancy.

Poppa to be, Matt, says ‘Her first trimester wasn’t great, but she hasn’t been moody, she’s been pretty cool, she hasn’t been too emotional, with all the hormones she’s handling it really well.’ She’s just about ready to meet their newest addition, however, Matt says. ‘She is at the stage where she is starting to feel uncomfortable and she’s like get this baby out already. We are also trying to soak up the time we still have together. We waited four years to have a baby specifically to enjoy our marriage. We are looking forward to our last holiday together because we know that once you have the baby, you get to enjoy it differently- through the eyes of a child.’ This is one gorgeous Hollywood couple that seems to have figured out how to make their careers work in favour of their marriage. ‘The first several years we were together, she was living in Ohio and we were doing this long distance thing. She eventually moved out to Los Angeles.’ Their love is bound, in part, by a force larger than themselves. ‘We both have strong faith in the Lord, and I think for us, that is something that bonds us and we have a focus on that above all else. We are both playful, and we have a lot of fun and jab at each other. I feel like sarcasm is important in a relationship.’ However the real trick to dealing with Matt’s demanding schedule comes with how Angela has moved into her current field. ‘When we met, she was an insurance fraud investigator, and when I got the job on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and we moved to New Orleans, we came up with a job that she could do while she travelled with me.’ Matt adds, ‘Doing the time apart is hard and dangerous. I think if you find ways to be together, and you are kissing someone on set and your wife is in a different part of the country, it makes things tougher. ‘I don’t know if it is the secret or not, but it works for us. Our priorities are grounded more in what is important in our life, not the industry.’ Meanwhile, while he already has a lot to be thankful for this holiday season, he is also starring in the final Pitch Perfect, titled Last Call Pitches, out in late December.

BARBELL SQUAT Featured above, Model Trainer Ryan Harden prepares for a set of barbell squats. The objective of a squat is to activate the entire chain of lower body leg muscles, including but not limited to, quads, hamstrings, gluteus (BOOTY), calves, and core. The three most important form cues to keep in mind while performing a squat are first, to maintain proper posture by keeping your torso and shoulders upright and in line with your hips. Second, remember to focus on having your bodyweight directly over your heels rather than your toes. This will greatly reduce risk for injury, as well as alleviate unnecessary joint pain from improper form. Lastly, and this applies for all exercises and not just squats, make sure to complete a full range of motion! Slowly lower your booty down until your knees create a 90-degree angle before standing back up.

44

BATTLE ROPES Michael Dean coaches Sean Alexander through a set on the battle ropes. Cardio can very easily, and often does, become monotonous and boring. Battle ropes are a great way to elevate your heart rate, warm your muscles up with a lightweight movement, and burn a ton of calories all at once! Squat down so that your knees are in a 90-degree angle (you’ll know you’re doing it right when your legs start getting tired!), make sure your back is flat and your shoulder blades are retracted, and then in 15-second intervals, alternate between moving the ropes up and down reciprocally (left arm goes up while right arm goes down), followed by 15 seconds of bilateral movement (moving both ropes up and down together). Repeat for 4-6 sets, or for 5-10 minutes in total for maximal effectiveness.

SUPERSETS What are they and why are they relevant? Supersets are when you stack two exercises together that work similar muscle groups, back to back, with little to no time to rest in-between. The reason for doing this is to activate the target muscle group in the first exercise, and then hop right into the second exercise (which is typically done with lighter weight for higher repetition) to completely exhaust the muscles, and effectively “burn out”. In the example depicted above, Michael Dean and Ryan Harden are shown sprinting up a set of stairs immediately following a set of squats. The squats pump blood into their legs and fatigue the muscles, and the sprints work to elevate their heart rate while at the same time completely exhausting their legs for maximum efficiency.

TRICEPS ROPE PUSHDOWN Nick Sandell walks us through the proper steps to perfecting your triceps rope pushdown. “Start standing upright with your shoulders pulled back, elbows hinged at the side, and rope in hand. Without moving your elbows, press the rope handles down to the floor while making sure your knuckles are facing each other. At the bottom of the movement, separate the rope in your hands away from each other in order to ensure the best possible muscular contraction. Tank: Teamm8 Pants: Nike

WALKING DUMBELL LUNGES Lunges are an incredibly effective leg exercise that really focuses on bridging the gap between lifting weights at the gym, and real-world functionality for daily tasks. Walking dumbbell lunges target the hamstrings and gluteus, while also training stability, grip strength, unilateral leg function, and total leg strength. To correctly perform a walking lunge start standing with feet together, and then step forward with one foot. With your single foot forward, lightly lower and tap the back knee down to the floor. While in this forward lunge position, your front knee should not be protruding further than the front of your foot, meaning your front shin should be totally vertical. Add one dumbbell in each hand and perform them for 5 sets of 5-8 reps on each leg. Michael Dean is shown performing the walking lunge, while Ryan Harden is depicted in the back, recovering from his last set, looking if cool as a cucumber.

HOLLYWOOD HOTSPOTS Written By: Vivian Nweze Seasons change every few months, but trendy locations change even quicker in Los Angeles. Before you start planning out the end of 2017 based off fall’s popular venues (that’s so 3 months ago), get up to speed with this expertly curated compilation of where to go, what to see, and what to do this winter. Hollywood doesn’t waste time getting into the spirit of the holidays. “Style & Society” EditorIn-Chief Kinya Claiborne attended a festive affair in Beverly Hills at the top of the season. “Rodeo Drive held their Holiday Lighting Celebration on November 16, featuring a special performance by Robin Thicke as the headlining performer. Vanessa Lachey hosted the event that ended with a fireworks display. ” Rodeo Drive will continue the bold lighting fixtures and extended shopping hours throughout December. Author and TV Host Erika De La Cruz suggests another holiday cheer filled shopping area, The Grove. “It’s one of my favorites for the holidaysthere is a corridor leading to Sees Candies that can’t you can’t pass up, with all the holiday sweets you can imagine. And, of course, a holiday train that wraps around the entire property, decorated for the Christmas season too!”

48

WHAT TO WATCH This year’s KIIS FM’s Jingle Ball will include performances by Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, The Chainsmokers, and more on December 1st at The Forum. Also at the Forum, on December 16th, is Power 106’s Cali Christmas, headlined by Chance the Rapper. Travis Scott is set to hit the stage as well, so you can bet there will be a Kardashian or Jenner somewhere in the audience. Stevie Wonder will be performing his classics at his House Full of Toys Benefit Concert December 10th at the Staples Center. Special guests include Andra Day, Dave Matthews, Tony Bennett, Pharrell Williams, and Savion Glover. The ultimate must-see show of the season indisputably is “Hamilton.” Head to Pantages Theatre in Hollywood to catch the last few weeks of Broadway’s smash hit before it’s closing night on December 30th.

WHERE TO DRINK & SOCIALIZE Trade in egg nog for cocktails at SkyBar at the Mondrian Hotel, a go to for stars like Nicole Richie and Chris Pratt. The open air bar transitions perfectly from a sun-kissed day party to a seductive candlelit evening. When you’re ready to get the party started, head over to Nightingale to dance the night away in the main room, either of their two lounges, or the outdoor garden oasis. You might bump into Gerard Butler, Michael B. Jordan, or Alessandra Ambrosio there too. You can also try out LA’s newest hot spot, the whimsical nightclub Poppy, where Drake just celebrated his 31st birthday with a Bar Mitzvah theme.

WHERE TO EAT Go to Hyde Sunset Kitchen + Cocktails in West Hollywood for seasonal California cuisine and craft cocktails in a cozy relaxing setting. The fried chicken sliders, risotto, and brussel sprouts are to die for. You might also spot celebrities like Usher or some NBA players while you’re there. Delilah and Catch LA are both known for their ambiance and top model crowd. Kendall Jenner has celebrated her birthday with it-girl filled parties at both restaurants. Jay-Z and Beyoncé have dined with a who’s who of dinner guests at Beauty & Essex. The lavishly decorated restaurant also features a pawn shop entrance for a full on speakeasy effect. Adjacent to Beauty & Essex, is the Asian inspired signature restaurant TAO. With two level seating, a 20 foot tall statue, and koi pond...it is an experience to say the least! TAO is also scheduled to be open on Christmas Day.

WHERE TO PARTY ON NEW YEAR’S EVE Go from dinner to dancing at Doheny Room for their New Year’s Eve Party. Located in West Hollywood, the two story restaurant has become a watering hole for stars like Sylvester Stallone, Alicia Vikander, Justin Bieber, and Vanessa Hudgens. Every major club, like 1Oak Los Angeles, will of course have their own parties that night. However, Tao Group’s The Highlight Room will be a stand out, with their rooftop Hollywood views and A-list patrons like Leonardo DiCaprio, The Weeknd, Katy Perry, and Jamie Foxx.

WHAT TO DO WITH FAMILIES The holiday season is also a prime time to visit your favorite theme parks, according to TV Host AJ Gibson. “Both Disneyland and Universal Studios are pretty wonderful during the holidays. Introducing my nephews to The Grinch is still one of the coolest moments in my life!” Kinya Claiborne volunteers every year to feed families of Skid Row on Christmas Eve. “Hundreds of volunteers provide a hot meal, toys, shoes, and healthcare to over 5000 homeless families in need. Celebs like Garcelle Beauvais, Kim Kardashian, Lisa Rinna, Pharrell Williams, Derek Fisher and their families have spent time at the Los Angeles Mission giving back to the homeless.” Lifestyle blogger & Founder of “Love and Loathing LA”, Caroline Juen recommends an animal filled evening with a bright twist. “I would suggest visiting the LA Zoo for their annual lights show. The whole park is lit up with beautiful lights and decorations, sure to give you and the kids all the warm and fuzzy feels.”

Dazzling Eye Candy for Design Aesthetes

Each year, Holiday House NYC opens its doors to the public revealing a mansion packed with dazzling eye candy from the industry’s top creative talents. The Academy Mansion, a 1920s limestone trophy house on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, tantalizes the senses, unfettered by creative constraints as an interior design showcase and fundraiser benefiting the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The event, open to the public Nov. 15 through Dec. 6, is an idiosyncratic design mashup from the minds of major design luminaries. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Holiday House NYC, founded in 2008 by Iris Dankner, a breast cancer survivor who harnesses the philanthropic power of design for breast cancer research. Here’s a look at this year’s showstopping spaces.

We start in the grand foyer designed by Bonnie Steves to embody the power of light and darkness, conveyed through key pieces including a lighted bronze wall sculpture and stacked ice sculptures by Jeff Zimmerman in the fireplace.

Next we head into the blush pink walled kitchen designed by Young Huh with graphic black and white cabinets and Huh’s own line of black and white tiles. The European-styled kitchen “floats” in the middle of the room allowing the classical architecture to shine through.

The living room designed by Alyssa Kapito evokes a chic Parisian pied-a-terre with its airy, white on white palette with pops of black. Alyssa Kapito Interiors, Photo Credit - Joshua McHugh “Winter Solstice” by BSJ Associates Photo Credit: Marco Ricca

A very different vibe emotes from the grand parlor, a collaboration between luxury furniture brand Roche Bobois and the New York-based design firm, Groves & Co. Inspired by a sexy hotel lounge bar, the parlor features Roche Bobois’ Profile sofa in blue cabaret velvet and organic, trunk-like Iron Tree cocktail tables.

In another parlor, designed by Sarah Magness working with the Italian luxury brand Promemoriam, embodies the pedigree of an English manor with its elaborately carved fireplace mantle and Pierre Frey fabric screens that line the walls. The space is ready made to enjoy a cognac and cigar with its custom bar, chess table and brass inlay coffee table. “New Years Eve” by Magness Interiors & Promemoria Photo by: Costas Picadas

Moving into the exotic gentlemen’s study envisioned by Patrik Lönn Design Inc., art objects, materials and textures from the designer’s travels throughout Africa come together to evoke the landscapes, myths and folklores of Africa.

Wanderlust also is the muse for a room designed by Cheryl Settino who created “a wayfarer’s personal space.” The tented room cloaked with patterned fabric features collected art objects and an oversized velvet sofa upholstered in a bright golden hue.

Lucinda Loya Interiors explores how opposites attract in her design of a bedroom that plays with color, pattern and texture in a high-contrast palette. A color-blocked custom-designed bed made by Savoir Beds, The Rug Company’s Zoom rug and a feathered statement Swan Chair from Roche Bobois create unexpected decor harmony.
