We turned 30! Turning 30 is a big deal, and looking back from conversations with the ownership, we could never have anticipated the legacy we have built. Turning 30 brings forth a new zeal for life. An excitement. A pursuit for more that is yet to be achieved.
Step into Village Market, beyond the stunning architecture, the first thing you notice is the greenery - lush, vibrant, and full of life. Sculptures and artworks are scattered across the mall, each telling a silent story. As you explore, the intricate pathways weave an experience that feels like a delightful maze, inviting curiosity at every turn.
Leaf through to pages 6 and 11 for a sneak peek on what the journey has been. Page 20 to page 27 is a special feature on the engine behind the masterpiece. A snapshot of the people that have been with us over the years and their contribution, The Humans of Village Market.
Have you ever wondered what our sculptures would say, if they could speak? Perhaps they would whisper of the countless memories created here, the moments shared, and the eyes that have admired them. If walls have ears, then our sculptures have seen and heard it all. The laughter, the love, the memories and connections. There is always someone watching. They have always been a part of us.
Village Cares takes us through a journey of community support in our pillars of Art, Education and the Environment. Our commitment is the betterment of society, and we are glad to play a fraction of this role by empowering those around us.
Every edition of the magazine is special, however, this one stole our hearts. This edition covers the journey that has led us to where we are. A celebration of 30 years of growth, community and legacy. We find so much joy in bringing you the best there is in the world of family fun, fashion, food, banking and essentials. We strive to be more than just a destination; we aim to be a lifestyle, a community, a village. We truly are home!
Thank you for being part of our story, cheers to infinity!

Village Market, Nairobi’s iconic shopping, recreation, and lifestyle destination, celebrated its 30th anniversary in grand style with a spectacular black-tie gala at the Trademark Hotel. Attended by members of the diplomatic community, government representatives, the Gigiri neighborhood, Runda Residents Association, Tree Estate residents, service and financial partners, tenants, and staff members, the evening was a powerful testament to the relationships Village Market has cultivated over three decades — a true celebration of friendship, reflection, and growth.
The gala opened dramatically with a vibrant African dance performance by the Zamaleo Dancers, paying homage to the diverse Kenyan and East African communities through song and dance. Guests were further captivated by stunning ballet performances from Dance Centre Kenya and high-energy showcases from the Mathare Kids, highlighting Village Market’s enduring support for local arts and culture.
Reflecting on the journey, Mr. Hamed
Ehsani delivered a heartfelt address, underscoring the transformative vision that began in 1995 when the Ehsani and the Shah families envisioned a vibrant African market where people could connect and shop.
Today, that vision has flourished into a thriving hub with over 200 shops and two award winning hotels, Tribe and Trademark Hotel.
Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed nostalgic tributes celebrating the Village Market’s history of construction, expansion, and community impact. As part of the commemorations, three legacy stores — including Pomodoro, Salon Malibu, and Jit Gems — were recognized for their unwavering presence since inception. Additionally, nine distinguished staff members were honored for dedicating 30 years
of service to the Village Market family.
“Our story is not just about market stores,” said Dr. Manoj Shah, Director of Village Market and Chairman of The Kingsway Group of Companies. “It is about people, the memories made, and the communities forged.”
Faustino and Lorenza Trufelli, owners of Pomodoro, remarked, “We are honored and amazed by the incredible evening organized by Village Market to commemorate our and their 30 years of service. We thank all our clients — without them, reaching this
milestone would have been impossible.”
The evening culminated in a dazzling performance by Bollywood Bhangra dancers, symbolizing the enduring spirit of unity and celebration that defines Village Market.
Village Market is a true reflection of the rich mosaic paths that have crossed within its walls over the last 30 years. We remain committed to nurturing spaces where connections are made, communities are built, and memories are treasured.
Every story has a beginning. One that is intertwined, woven in the mind and hearts of dreamers. Seeing that which is yet to be conceived. Drawing, planning, creating.
Village Market’s story is that of audacious dreams, connected by family, brotherhood and a partnership spanning three decades. Of one who saw the possibility in what lay coffee plantations.
Every village in Africa has a marketplace. A communal space that allows people to catch up with friends, families and associates, eat, sing and dance, and shop for their essentials! A dynamic centre that gives life and meaning to the everyday.
Over the years, our community has grown, and we have allowed other dreamers to bring their vision to life within our facilities. The list of dreamers who first set up shop in Village Market include: Pomodoro, Jit Gems, Salon Malibu, Artcaffe, Brown’s Cheese, MAC store, The Body Shop, Africa Lifestyle Hub, Mysafe, Mille Collines, Yves Rocher, Sandstorm, Kikoy, Kitengela Glass, Mopti Living, Kashmir Arts to mention a few. Village Market has been the flagship retail destination for many local and international brands to much acclaimed success that has seen them spread their wings to other locations. This has been our absolute joy!
Food is undoubtedly one of life’s greatest pleasures. The joy of eating good food is simply indescribable!
Whether you opt to sip on your favourite soup or cup of chai at home, dig into the delicacies whipped around the barbeque over laughter and conversations, dine with your significant other, chase the hit of fast food, or opt for healthier options, Village Market has grown into Nairobi’s unparalleled food haven because we understand that good food is food for the soul!
The adage by Ratan Naval Tata states, “If you want to walk fast, walk alone. If you want to walk far, walk together”. Over the years, we have taken this to heart and partnered with communities, associations, non-profits and government agencies. Whether it is a partnership with
Thank you for the thirty beautiful years!
our immediate neighbours, waste management organisations who ensure our impact on the environment is at a minimum, a charity organisation that is fundraising for a cause, supporting government agencies in various engagements, or setting up a computer class with full time tutor for basic computer classes for free, we have established cordial relations that have made the last 30 years memorable.
Turning 30 is a big deal, and looking back as we connect the dots, Village Market is indeed a legacy. Looking forward, we are excited at what is still to come. We have so much to achieve, together!
r. Jit Patel is a businessman of sharp intellect and impeccable style. A man of few words, he values time as much as the precious stones he deals in. Over the years, he has had the foresight to recognise opportunities across East Africa and build a thriving business around them. His journey with Village Market is a testament to vision, resilience, and lasting partnerships. This is his Village Market story.
I had a store in town, at Koinange Street, Nairobi’s CBD. We were doing well. It was a good time to branch off and explore a different location. At the time, the construction of Village Market proved an opportunity for business expansion.
The ownership approached me while Village Market was only on paper, and the land was but a coffee plantation. At the time
For a party in 1995, the launch was grand. 1,500 people were invited to witness the beginning of the journey. Though not popular at the beginning, the area started opening up. The embassies started setting up shop within the area making it a blue zone - a diplomatic hub. Village Markets' popularity increased.
What has kept Mr. Jit at Village Market
over the years is not just the environment but the great relations he has experienced with the ownership. JIT Gems stands as a symbol of excellence. The name itself - an acronym for Just In Time - embodies a philosophy of precision and commitment to customer satisfaction.
Precious stones, delicately cut with timeless elegance are what you see when you walk into JIT Gems. It is more than a jewellery store, it is a brand. With three decades at Village Market, Mr. Jit’s legacy is clear: some things, like fine gems and great business, only grow more valuable with time.
Fausto and Lorenza are nothing short of passionate!
They may be in business but what they have done in the last 30 years is build a community. They brought Rome to Nairobi. Perfected the art of pizza making with what they could find available. Grew. They had two children, loved the country. Made it home 30 years and counting. This is their story.
test the ingredients, bring you the finest and ensure the best machinery is available. For the love of pizza.
When we first came to Kenya, there were little to no pizza stores. They were countable, especially in Nairobi. Italian pizza as we know it was even more rare. Most Italians in those days settled in the coastal region, Malindi and Watamu. This was new, taking pizza out of Rome was a risk.
Village Market was new and under construction. The first food court concept, and we had the privilege of choosing our own store location. What we loved most was the open- air setting, nature, trees. It beats being in a closed building any day. In those years we would have evening meals together with the management. It really was family. Home away from home.
What many people do not know is that different regions do their pizza differently. There is a whole industry behind it. They
One of the most challenging experiences we had setting up was importing everything we needed to start off. We were recreating the Italian culture and food tradition in Kenya. The seasons here are different, mushrooms were mostly available in the rainy season. Then they disappeared. We had to take time to understand the Kenyan landscape, source ingredients locally and train people on the art of pizza making.
We are happy to run one Pomodoro store.
It has allowed us to give it all the attention. To grow. To ensure we get all our margins out of it. To train our employees. Our customers are more than shoppers, they are family. In the earlier years, we would have German School students come by for their lunch. What we see now is them bringing their children. The memories they made here have become a part of who they are. A part of their family traditions, for generations to come.
Pomodoro for many is like coming home!
As Nairobi grew and entertainment trends shifted, Village Market found itself at a turning point. The beloved Hi-Tide Water Park, once the heart of weekend adventures, closed its doors, marking the end of an era. For many who grew up racing down its slides, its closure felt like losing a childhood friend. But change was inevitable, and with it came the promise of something new.
By the early 2010s, the way people experienced entertainment was evolving. Recreational spaces had to offer more than nostalgia - they had to keep up with an audience craving modern, immersive experiences. The rise of gaming culture, interactive play, and social hangout spots meant Village Market needed to reimagine its entertainment landscape. The demand was not just for fun - it was for bigger, better, and more diverse options that could appeal to families, young adults, and corporate groups alike.
During this transition, excitement buzzed about what would come next. Could Village Market recreate the magic of its earlier years, but on a whole new level? For long-time visitors, the anticipation was palpable. While some mourned the loss of familiar spaces, many looked forward to the next chapter - a reinvention that would cement Village Market’s status as Nairobi’s premier entertainment hub for years to come, and so in 2013 out went the old recreation to make room for a new and exciting era!
In 2018, Village Market ushered in a new era of entertainment, redefining recreation with state-of-the-art attractions. From high-tech virtual reality, gravity defying Ozone Trampoline Park to Kenya’s first glow-in-the-dark mini golf, these new additions transformed the space into a premier entertainment hub.

BY CHRISTINE NG'ANG'A
Beyond these incredible spaces, Village Market has become a home for unforgettable experiences, bringing people together through a lineup of exciting events all year round. Whether it is the thrill of friendly competition or the joy of shared moments, there is something for everyone.
Bowling leagues and corporate tournaments turn casual games into epic showdowns, while racing championships at REV let speed enthusiasts chase their need for adrenaline. Kids light up with excitement during holiday camps, and fun days, making every school break an adventure. Meanwhile, Ballpoint Social Club sets the stage for good vibes with themed nights like Acoustics & Beats and Back to Rock, where music, nostalgia, and great company come together.
Whether you are here to compete, unwind, or simply make memories, Village Market keeps the fun alive, just as it always has.
For many Nairobians, Village Market is not just a destination - it is a part of our collective memory. It is where childhood birthday parties turned into teenage hangouts, where first bowling strikes led to lifelong rivalries, and where families, friends, and colleagues have gathered for three decades to celebrate, unwind, and connect.
Looking back, fun was simpler - racing to grab the best floater at Hi-Tide Water Park, catching the latest blockbuster at Nu-Metro Cinemas, or battling it out at the Super Bowl bowling alley. Today, the experiences have evolved, but the essence remains.
Having witnessed this transformation firsthand, it is clear that while the games may change, the laughter, excitement, and shared moments remain timeless. 30 years on, Village Market is not just a place, it is a feeling, a tradition, and a reminder that fun never goes out of style.
As we celebrate 30 years of fun, laughter, and unforgettable moments, we are not just looking back - we are looking ahead to an even more exciting future. Village Market has always been a place of innovation, constantly evolving to bring new, world-class entertainment experiences to Nairobi.
Here is to new adventures, groundbreaking experiences, and the endless joy that awaits. Village Market is not just where fun has lived, it is where it will continue to thrive.
Cheers to in-Fun-ity!
BY CHRISTINE NG'ANG'A
Since its inception, Village Market has been more than just a place, it has been a feeling!
A hub of laughter, adventure, and memories so vivid, they stay with you for a lifetime. It is one of those places with a certain je ne sais quoi, a magic you cannot quite put into words, only experience.
Millennials who grew up in Nairobi, are likely to have fond memories tied to Village Market. Saturdays at Hi-Tide Water Park were a highlight - the thrill of the slides, the joy of grabbing a bright yellow floater and lazily drifting down the Lazy River, letting the sun warm our faces as we laughed with friends. Afterward, we would dry off in the sun and head to Steers for a well-earned burger, sitting outside with a perfect view of the water park, already looking forward to the next visit.
Village Market has always been about more than just shopping or weekend outings. It has been a place where families bond, friends compete in games, and celebrations come to life. Over the years, it has evolved with new and exciting recreational spaces, yet its essence remains the same - a place where fun is at the heart of every visit.
In the early days, Village Market was already setting itself apart as a destination for family fun. What started with Pit Stop, a small but lively kids’ corner with train rides, slides, and sand pits, soon grew into something much bigger. By the late ‘90s, Village Market had evolved into the go-to place for entertainment in Nairobi, introducing a wave of recreational spaces that redefined fun.
The arrival of the Super Bowl brought a 12-lane bowling alley, a first of its kind in Nairobi. Whether it was families bonding over friendly matches, teens competing for the perfect strike, or corporate teams gathering for after-work showdowns, the energy was always electric. Right next to the bowling lanes was the pool hall, where players lined up their shots under dim neon lighting, creating an atmosphere that felt straight out of a classic sports bar. Here, learning to hold a cue stick was a rite of passage, and the thrill of a well-executed shot never got old.
Outside, mini golf provided a more laid-back challenge, with Nairobians testing their putting skills through winding greens and tricky obstacles. But the true crown jewel of this era was Hi-Tide Water Park. It was not just about the slides, it was the rush of climbing up the tallest one, the anticipation before taking the plunge, and the triumphant splash at the bottom. Some preferred the adrenaline of the free-fall slides, while others grabbed bright yellow floaters and let the lazy river carry them along, soaking up the sun.
And when the day’s adventures wrapped up, Nu-Metro Cinemas awaited, offering the latest blockbusters - where watching a movie was not just about the film, but the full experience of popcorn, plush red seats, and the thrill of the big screen.
These spaces were not just entertainment spots; they were backdrops for childhood memories, first dates, birthday parties, and countless weekend traditions. Village Market in the late ‘90s and early 2000s was not just ahead of its time - it was the heartbeat of Nairobi’s leisure scene.
Francis Odali is as helpful as they come. Composed in nature, even in the face of a crisis. A hard worker, he started off at housekeeping in his younger days before transitioning to recreation and later parking where he is currently serving. He is the kind of man who uses millennium, projections, prospects, and exigencies in a normal conversation. This is his story.
I studied photography, in my youth, at Kenya Polytechnic. This is one thing I am certain many do not know about me. I had just completed a faith-based youth program in Mombasa and was looking for work opportunities. By the time I came to Village Market, a lot of the vacancies had already been filled. I was fortunate enough to get a slot in the recreation facility, at the minigolf facility.
I used to babysit one of our current directors. His mother would bring him to recreation, and we would watch him. In our conversations, he would say how he will finish his studies and come to manage the mall and employ many people. What he said then, in his little childlike fairytale dream, is what we see now.
In my first two months, I became a super visor. In those days it was an open democratic decision. An open ballot, with open servers. In my first fifteen to twenty years, I was in between miniature golf and bowling. Change, as it does, came calling.
The demolition of the waterpark and minigolf was not received well by many. We had to go home on leave for a period of time. It was then that I was approached to join the parking team. There were three of
Mr. Jamshid is swift of movement, stern of face and jelly of heart, his kindness hidden underneath his good humour and warm smile. Meticulous with great attention to detail dotting all i’s and crossing all t’s. This greatly explains his love for construction engineering. He is a silent pillar of the mall having been involved in managing all the different phases of the construction and expansion processes. Those who have had the privilege of serving under him speak of how he is thorough, a stickler for time and performance, considerate, caring, respectful and hands-on. This is his Village Market story.
They say life begins at 40. This is when I stepped foot at Village Market for the first time in the employ of its ownership. The mall was half-built at the time, I was in consultancy then.
Growing up, my father grew his restaurant business from selling mandazi and tea. He worked hard to educate me and my siblings. The grit I have is from seeing my parents do life. Education he believed could not be taken away from you, a testament I have come to see. He was a firm believer that honesty is rewarded in the long run. A lesson he passed down to me.
I am Iranian born in Pakistan. In 1979, as a newlywed, my wife and I came to visit my uncle in
Kenya. At the time I had no job back home. In two weeks, I got a consultancy role as a structural engineer. There was financial muscle, so I got to work on the projects I designed and visited the construction sites. All my career I have used a drawing board and a T-square by hand. To date, I still draw by hand, I leave the computer drawings to the younger people.
Mr. Mehraz nudged me towards my growth in Kenya. He gave me side projects while I was still in the consultancy firm I was working for. My son was 12 at the time and they would spend countless hours playing minigolf while I worked. The directorship has always treated us, their employees, with respect and genuine appreciation. Mr. Abbas would pass by my offices, find out how me, the children and my family were doing. I believe he would do this for all and not just me. He would buy loads of items in the then
Nakumatt and give it to people. His generosity stood out for me. What the ownership continuously show is genuine care and not because they want something in return.
Over time, in leadership, you learn how different people are, know your team and assign them duties based on their skill set. As we expanded, there was need to get more people on board to do maintenance for the mall, Tribe and Trademark. There are staff that I have worked with since I came in, Mr. Mbugua and Mr. Ngoni both who are very good at what they do. It has taken time to build, and everyone has contributed to where the mall is today.
The most challenging construction phase to me was doing the Tribe Hotel while the hotel was still functional. When they approached me, I said yes, and we started the journey.
Village Market became my second home. What made me stay so long is the trust the ownership has in me despite the mistakes I made, big and small. They accepted me and made me part of something better. Trust made me get confident.
The lessons I have learnt over the years are simple yet profound.
• To cherish each moment, regardless
• Do better today than was done yesterday
• Honesty is not just for now but for the generations to come
• No one can take education from you
• Money is not everything in life, health comes first
• Pray for your children to go the right way
• Ultimately, serve humanity, there’s more to life than material things My two boys are educated and doing well for themselves, and this, this gives me joy. for themselves, and this, this gives me joy.
What you will see is a wide smile, dimples, a perfect dental formula and feet that are ready to move to the next assignment. If we were to count his steps, then he would surpass many. Ever present and always willing is Walter. A community man. In his world, now is a good time to get it done.
His fingerprints and footsteps imbibed in the streets of Village Market since inception. Walters’ records are crisp, clean and in order. Our Compliance Master. Walter is his own department, within the finance department. They say the best kept secrets are with the quiet and loyal ones. That is Walter for you, and this is his Village story.
One thing people do not know about me is that I once resigned from Village Market. I was done. I had had enough. Little did I know that my story was just beginning. 30 years later, I have had immense pleasure in working here and raising my family. The growth I have experienced can only be summed up in the late Mr. Ghosh’s words, “Perfection is when an employer gets a good employee and when an employee gets a good employer” I have had absolutely no reason to look for work elsewhere.
My proudest moments have been in being part of the different construction phases. The waterslides were a symbiotic combination of business and pleasure. Parents shop. Kids play. In phase 3 we had the cinema and bowling. In those years movies were the only place where couples would ignite the spark in their love life. The more the demand for space within the mall, the more we grew into the different facets.
I remember a time when we would deliver
pamphlets in schools in Nairobi. That was marketing then. Creating more awareness of the mall and its recreation spaces. I have loved everything I have been a part of. My work in many ways is like a spider web. I work interchangeably with all departments but mostly with the finance and legal teams. I have served under different leaders of different natures and temperaments. Passion for my work has kept me going, even in the face of the hot-headed ones.
My time here has been beneficial not just to me but my community as well. I have educated my siblings, my children, my siblings' children. All by the work I have done here. In Africa, we do not count children. Your brother's children are
your own. The current generation may refer to it as black tax. What I see in the many expansions I have been a part of is the number of people and families it has supported.
It all began in Waumini House. Brothers strategizing, burning the midnight oil, researching. What was once a coffee plantation is now a mega shopping and recreational facility, and I am proud to have been a part of it. That is what I have done in the last 30 years, given service to humanity as unto God.
Who you meet now in the front office is a soft-spoken girl from the coast. What you do not see is the meanders that have been, to get to where she is. When you walk into the office you will feel her presence, warm and assuring. You will experience her hospitality and love. A calm force to reckon with. The wealth of knowledge Tina has spans 30 years of the malls’ existence. The beginning of what is now. The dawn of 1995. This is where her story begins, doing what she knew how to do best, cleaning, sweeping, serving.
The year was 1995, the first time Tina set foot at Village Market, was for a tour of the mall. An unfinished building, with empty spaces, tiles, and unfinished windows, stones and all. Men at work. What we see today is nowhere close to the little shopping centre that was phase one of the mall. Sweeping, clearing the rubble and getting done what needed to be done at Ksh. 100 per day. It was raw, chaotic, and full of potential.
I was among the first ladies to join the boots on the ground. We called ourselves the Buzz Girls. The first cleaning department that focused on clearing the food court. When I look back, I think we chose the word buzz because of how busy the food court was then. It was the in-thing, and everyone wanted to be a part of it. This experience was way better than what my past work had been, a short stint as a house girl.
This Buzz Girl went ahead to be recruited in one of the restaurants, Koko’s Cafe. Meanwhile, someone was watching and gave her a chance. She put down her cleaning tools and picked up baking dishes. She was in the cafe for about four years, selling juices, cakes and sandwiches. The end of this became the beginning of her next role. While
people were collecting their dues as a result of the cafe closure, she was retained. How she made tea with her coastal flair, gave her the next opportunity in the main office kitchen while assisting at the reception.
One of her most unexpected tasks was her role as a lifeguard. The waterslide became her refuge as she quickly found joy and solace in taking care of kids. She also learned that she could shout and really talk, two skills that were absolutely necessary for a lifeguard yet very different for her reserved personality.
A fourth born in a family of eight, she knows what it is like to labour, to find your place and to know your worth. She has known not to be defined by her roles or life circumstances. Reflecting on her growth at Village Market, “In my world no work is menial, none greater than the other. What remains of utmost importance is service to humanity. I derive so much joy in serving people. I have served in Village Market for 30 years within different capacities. I have been stretched in my roles, I have grown, I have seen others grow and I would not have it any other way. Work rejuvenates me, I enjoy working with people.”
Tina has had as many lessons as she has had milestones. She came in as a girl, and now a mother of three of her own, and many that she has
taken under her care. She often calls her son ‘phase one’ because she had him during the first expansion. Hers is a story of many firsts.
Many construction phases later, one thing remains true, change is inevitable. Tina has been a witness to Village Markets’ beautiful metamorphosis!
Pam, as many of her friends refer to her, is sweet. In her soft spoken and reserved nature. The kind that we would refer to as cutesy and demure. She speaks fondly of her children and her eyes sparkle for the things that bring her joy. Laughter and dancing are her go-to expressions. One thing you will hear loudly from Pamela is her faith and gratitude.
The date was 11 July 1994. I came to Village Market as a casual. I had come from Vihiga, having left my two children at home. Fresh in the city, I had come to work, and Village Market was the first place that housed me. In 1995, I was moved to the office to help within the kitchen serving tea to the directorship. My work cut across various tasks, we were in the growing phase which meant making the most of the available resources.
One of my other tasks included delivering messages across. Like a pigeon with a message in hand, I would cross the construction site in pursuit of one director or the other.
No one ever tells you how intimidating American English can be. Especially when it is spoken fast by a learned man, I now laugh at my first days at work because of how fast my boss would speak.
Mr Ngoni must have been a tall, dark and handsome man in his heyday. The kind that girls swoon over. He is simple in speech, blunt. His work speaks for him, sturdy work, clean finishes, countless yards of timber. A craftsman. Every grain, every cut, every polished surface is a testament to his skill. His wrinkle lined face tells a story of decades of dedication. Yet, his laughter, rich and unrestrained, reveals another truth - his love for life, for good times, and for the joy that comes from creating something lasting.
1982 is when I came to Nairobi, living in Langata, working menial jobs in the industrial area. That was before I met Mr. Mehraz and started working on his house in Farasi Lane, I then transitioned to Village Market. It was in the heat of the attempted coup in the Moi era. The days when the late Leonard Mambo Mbotela would make announcements from under the table.
My journey in woodwork started long before I came to the city. Born in the heart of Bungoma, what I knew beyond school is what my father did. Carpentry. I am one of 10 of his children who took after him. It is in my blood. I am an artist, my story is in woodwork more than it is in words.
Over the years, I see what was and what now is. What is now Sweet Street was the movie theatre. The mall began there and ended in what is now NCBA. My first workshop was in the Lintons area, my current one used to be a forest. The initial designs of
the mall were done by Mr. Mehraz. Every detail is intricately thought through. I loved the waterfall, the river, the water park and the mini golf. Those days were fun, not just
been an integral part of Village Market, one of its pillars that has brought plans and designs to life, to be enjoyed by all and sundry. Does he plan on stopping anytime soon, I dare ask?
At 64 years, he is still the man behind the wheel. Most trusted. Loyal. Gentle in speech, sharp of mind. He will most likely complete your greeting when you are a couple of steps out. A warm greeting, with smiling eyes. A man of few words. A gifter. You definitely want him to be your secret Santa any day. A man who has enjoyed being on the move. A handyman, an honest one. One who has been in big cars, big rooms and big men's houses. This is the story of Morgan.
Mine is an interesting turn of events. The work I had no intention to do, became the one that I have loved most. I have always loved travelling. There is a certain joy that comes with feeling the connection of tyres to the tarmac. The breeze, the meeting point of many worlds.
The work I had before this allowed me to travel, and I loved it. Rwanda, Cote D’Ivore, there were always places to be and work to be done. I got the call to come work at Village Market, but I ignored it. The bliss of youth. I had just been reassigned to Rwanda for three months during the genocide. The opportunity to work there longer was something I was not interested in so I came back home.
The next call was when I was out of work. Jobless. Searching. I took it. In my first few weeks, I was rarely assigned work. In the years when our office was near the waterslides, I would spend my time hearing the shrieks of children playing, water splashing, and parents shouting.
In those days, fuelling of company cars was done by cash. I brought solutions. Fuel was to be done by mileage calculation and not mere estimations. I quickly became in charge of the process. I was equally in charge of banking
weekly collections. One thing I have always loved is being on the road, regardless of the assignment.
I was carjacked, not once but four times in the line of duty. At times to gun-point. This has been the most interesting of times. Once they took everything from me at 2:30am. All this has not stopped me.
My most favourite memory is linked to one of the directors. He was kind-hearted, in speech and action. More than once he would be spotted blowing balloons to give to children. Or packets of unga for the adults. Giving was in his framework. A generous man. What we now have as staff meals was initiated by him when he saw someone sleep by the roadside at lunch time, for lack of money for a meal. This was 2003.
What is now the Kingsway area was once a pumpkin plantation for staff consumption. The Trademark Hotel was once someone's homestead.
I have not seen a year with no construction. It is as though it is our mantra. Expansions.
A perfect work environment is what I have experienced at Village Market. My children have all received quality education.
The office is my favourite place to be. There is always something to be done and when you are busy with work that you enjoy and love, you do not get old quickly. A testament I hold dear, take what you do as your own and do it honestly. It pays off to love what you do and find joy in it.
Being behind the wheels is the heart of what I do.
His wrinkles are sparse, grey hair abundant. Confidence is his second name. He walks tall, loud and takes pride in his expertise, knowing where every pipe leads or leaks. Mbugua is a sweet tongue, a silver fox, a man of the people. Plumbing for him is more than a physical task. It is mental, a mind game. He thrives in figuring out the why behind every systemic failure.
“I first stepped foot in Village Market in 1992. To fix my first tap at the mall. It was a day of many firsts. Then I was part of Pioneer Plumbing that had been contracted for works within the mall. In 1993, plumbing work started within the construction site. I was put to work, my then chief of staff was a Mr. Patel.”
Mbugua found love in Village Market. The kind that makes a bachelor want more. The kind that makes a man work twice as hard. That which gives him three babies. All of a sudden life stopped being about him and more about them, with his beloved Janet.
“1995 August. My wife was heavy with child. I was soon to relish in the joys of fatherhood. My first fruit. That is the year we launched the waterslides. It was a huge moment, it was loved by many. The success was communal. That day, we partied. This tops the list of my fond memories of Village Market. In the years that followed, I expanded my knowledge. I studied electrical and welding in addition to my knowledge of plumbing. At one point, I was a one man show, specialising in all the three fields.”
Mbugua has been a supervisor for a decade plus having worked and trained different generations of staff. “I am proud of all that I have accomplished. One thing I have seen to be here is that you will always be part of the vision. For the employed, do what makes you happy, call yourself to account
daily. It will motivate you to do more and show up the next day.”
Mbugua’s children are all graduates, with his first having completed her undergraduate degree in China and is currently doing her masters in the US. The second is a chemical engineer in Ghana and his last child is graduating in two months, computer engineering. Mbugua is a proud father and Village Market made it possible in so many ways!
I see you look at me strangely. Is it my dreadlocks? Or the fact that I am industrious, always on my laptop. I know Stanley Cups are the in thing now, I see you pass with them in hand. All colours. Large handles. Coke is still my drink of choice.
Do I listen to your secrets? All the time. I cannot help it. It is part of my DNA, vintage and all. I know you are dying to take a photo with me. Man from Africa, who holds the record of sitting still, at ninety degrees and bears all weather. The next time you pass by, do not feel shy. I kinda like the attention.
We hear your footsteps. They cause a vibration on our earth. Our little ones feel it like an earthquake. Exhilarating. If you think about it. A little reminder that it is day, and you all have come shopping, and to have a good time. The kids have such curious wonder. Allow them to linger, allow us to fascinate their world. Give them a picture to paint. They do not need school for that. All they need is what they see. Us.
Not many of you see us. The ones who do, think so. We beg to differ. Often you look past us, to the many thoughts that cloud your mind. I wish you knew how soothing we could be. That our movements could ease the storm in your mind. We are here for you, always. So, take a minute or two of stillness when you pass by us. Will you?
We are family. And no, fire is not our first name. We kill it. Any chance we get. We love it here, seeing you walk up the stairs in wonder. I know it has been long and yes there was a waterslide here. Guess what, just like you we grew. We quite liked the outdoor Minigolf, glad The Yard is there. Most of our family lives there, or should I say glows there, in the dark. They have been given renewed purpose, just like us. So, keep walking and experience all the wonder that is our home.
I see you walk past me. Pushing your trolley. Today you got a little bit more than your usual. Are you having guests? I would love to be a fly at your party. But I quite like flying up here. Having a bird's eye- view of your shopping carts and baskets. On days when there are only a few of you, I get so bored!
I was born for movement, I like to see a whole lot of it from underneath me. Pinky-promise you’ll come, even if just for a box of tissues?
I am your little reminder to explore. The world is your oyster. Take that trip, will you?
Octopus, no. My name is Bubbles I know I have the tentacles and all, so you are tempted to call me so. But no. My name is Bubbles. B-U-B-B-L-E-S, Bubbles. I know sunlight is okay being called OMO and shoe polish is Kiwi but in my world, there are no purple octopuses, only bubbles.
Ask your kids, they’ll tell you how happy I make them feel. Just at my sight they smile wider, shout louder and play happier. They sure never want to leave. I know, I am irresistible, it’s my secret weapon. My lucky charm. Fair warning though, it only works on children because they are absolutely avoca-dorable.
Yes. That is who we are. Men at work. Showing you our backs. We are in the distance far, though we still get to hear your chatter, and feel your eyes rest on us with the occasional click of the camera. The truth is we die to see your faces. Just a glimpse of the joy you experience when you are around. When you have come from jumping at Ozone. Ice cream in hand. Quenching your thirst. Adrenaline is crazy, we get it. It’s a high that leaves you on cloud nine. We have been up this ladder for quite some time. Make sure to wave whenever you are around. We may not see it, but we sure will feel it.
Food. Everyone’s perfect partner in crime. Good food. The kind that makes your tongue dance with excitement, tempting you to savour every bite. The kind that awakens your taste buds afresh every time you think about it. The kind that leaves you craving more.

As Circle Rewards approaches its first anniversary on August 22, 2025, Village Market’s flagship loyalty program continues to redefine what it means to shop, dine, and unwind in style.
Over the past year, Circle Rewards has seamlessly blended convenience, exclusivity, and everyday delight - making every visit to the mall more rewarding. One that rewards loyalty, encourages discovery, and keeps shoppers coming back.
With over 198 participating outlets and growing collaborations, the program has proven that loyalty can be effortless and exciting. From lunch dates and boutique buys to quick errands, points earned are now more powerful than ever - thanks to a series of strategic upgrades.
But that is just the beginning.
This year, Circle Rewards is rolling out new and improved features designed to elevate the customer experience. At the top of the list is a seamless integration with parking, allowing members to redeem points for free or discounted parking - a long-requested enhancement that adds both value and convenience to every visit.
Another standout development is our strategic collaboration with Carrefour. As one of the mall’s anchor tenants, Carrefour’s onboarding has opened new doors for Circle Rewards members to earn and redeem points on essential shopping, making the program even more relevant to everyday life.
Behind the scenes, the Circle Rewards app has undergone technical improvements to ensure smoother onboarding, faster load times, and intuitive navigation. A new app version was released in May 2025, squashing bugs and optimizing performance based on real user feedback.
To support these milestones, the loyalty team has also focused on tenant engagement - ensuring that every touchpoint across the mall reflects the
Village Market promise of exceptional service and rewarding experiences.
A frequently asked question (FAQ) feature has also been embedded on the app to allow issue resolution at the palm of your hands before visiting our customer service desk.
Additionally, Village Market has enhanced its mall-wide WiFi experience, offering faster and more stable connectivity to support app performance, on-site browsing, and seamless shopping journeys.
As we count down to the official anniversary celebration this August, we are also celebrating you - our community of engaged, loyal shoppers who have embraced the Circle lifestyle. With new campaigns, exciting events, and even more partnerships on the horizon, the next year promises more reasons to stay connected.
Circle Rewards is not just about points - it is about people, experiences, and the joy of being rewarded for doing what you love.
Not a member yet? Join Circle Rewards today and discover why loyalty feels different at Village Market. Circle Rewards is available on Playstore and Appstore.
