CARVER YACHT OWNERS CAN BOAT WITH CONFIDENCE. AND THAT’S OUR PROMISE. To build a boat is a very complex undertaking. In fact, not many boat builders actually build their boats. It’s more of an assembly process, with large numbers of components sourced from other vendors and put together at the plant. To maintain the highest levels of quality control, reliability and structural integrity, Carver manufactures and produces most of its components in-house, assuring each customer the finest production boat available. What’s more, Carver’s Class B rating means its yachts are built to navigate as far out as 200 miles offshore and sustain Force 8 winds and waves up to 13 feet. No wonder Carver Yachts is taking the marine industry by storm. Sea trial one at your Carver Yachts Dealer today. We promise you won’t be disappointed.

Carver Yachts Promise Every Carver Yacht owner has my personal pledge that we will provide whatever support is necessary to ensure the finest ownership experience in boating. As a Carver owner, if you ever have a problem that cannot be remedied by your local dealer, I promise that the right technical experts will be assigned to aid that dealer in solving your problem. I invite you to take a closer look at Carver and see the difference.

FROM THE HELM by Kate Bush

Help For Hurricanes A

s I sat down to write my first draft of “From the Helm,” Hurricane Harvey, Irma and Jose had just wreaked havoc on the Caribbean, Florida and Texas, destroying homes, communities and lives. My heart breaks for all those affected by these storms and especially aches for the islands of St. Martin, Anguilla and St. Barts. Just four months prior, my family and I explored these three islands aboard a Moorings bareboat charter, soaking up the culture, landscapes and cuisine. After the hurricanes, the islands reported nearly 95 percent destruction. The devastation in the Caribbean, Florida and Texas is incomprehensible, yet the generosity and compassion shown after these storms is heartening. The Caribbean islands are steadily rebuilding as we speak. Anguilla is welcoming back tourists, and many of the restaurants and shops we visited on St. Martin are back up and running. But there is much work that still needs to be done. These Marigot, St. Martin communities can use all the help they can get. If you’re in a position to give, please donate whatever you can to help rebuild these communities. For an extensive list of charities you can donate to, visit CHARITYNAVIGATOR.ORG. And keep an eye out for my Moorings charter feature in an early Spring 2018 issue! Once again, we bring you the 2018 Buyer’s Guide (p. 43), filled with the latest and greatest buys for next year’s boating season. If you’re looking for gift ideas for your favorite boater, look no further than our Holiday Gift Guide (p. 26), where you can find apparel, electronics and nautical stocking stuffers. Contributor Heather Steinberger brings to light a story of Alvin Clark (p. 36), a 19th century schooner that sank in Green Bay in 1864. When divers found her more than 100 years later, she was almost perfectly intact — masts and all. Read this feature to find out what happened once they pulled the Clark from her resting site. The staff at Lakeland Boating and I wish you all a happy and healthy New Year! Do you have a story idea you’d like to suggest? Email me at kbush@lakelandboating.com to share your ideas.

Correction In our September 2017 issue, we ran a Safety First column on page 31 titled “Welcome Aboard,” which discussed U. S. Coast Guard (USCG) boardings. Upon publication, the USCG reached out to us to stress that boardings of recreational and commercial vessels are daily occurrences and part of every small boat station’s routine operations. The column’s Welcome Aboard tone may have given the impression A that USCG Boarding Teams are intimidating; however, the USCG stresses professionalism and courtesy, and wants boaters to know that recreational boating safety boardings should not be feared. Yamaha Hosts Media Days, Showcases New Products

Yamaha Marine Group held its annual Media Days in September in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, where they showcased the all-new F-90, F-25 and Helm Master products. Known for their reliability and functionality, Yamaha motors are big in the offshore, saltwater market but are now making big strides into the Great Lakes freshwater market, as well. The F-90 engine has been redesigned to make it lighter and easier to handle. The F-75 is a smaller, updated version of the F-90. The IBEX Innovation Award-winning F25 is the lightest engine of that class in the market at 126 pounds. Its battery-less Electronic Fuel Injection start and optional electric start kit are exciting new features. Also new from Yamaha is the easy-to-use digital Helm Master, a fully integrated boat control system that uses a joystick and is available on new boats with Yamaha engine packages. Most recently introduced is the Talon SS4 Propeller. The unique propeller combines instant acceleration and high lifting capability with the stealth approach needed to help dominate flats fishing. The new propeller features the latest iteration of Yamaha’s patented Shift Dampener System, which greatly reduces shift clunk and vibrations at low speeds. DON’T HESITATE TO RENOVATE by Capt. Frank Lanier

Canvas Care Cleaning and maintaining your boat’s canvas.

M

ost boats utilize canvas in some fashion: As a cover to protect the dinghy or as a Bimini top to provide welcome shade from the sun. Boaters spend big bucks outfitting their vessels with canvas accessories; however — as with anything in the marine environment — service life is directly related to care and maintenance. Let’s take a look at some tips on how best to maintain your canvas investment. General cleaning tips The key to canvas longevity starts with regular cleaning. While the following cleaning tips are generic in nature, you should always identify the type of marine fabric you have and check the manufacturer’s recommendations before following any cleaning or care routine. Start by brushing off any loose dirt or contaminants, then use a hose and moderate water pressure to remove as much remaining grime as possible. Next, clean the canvas with a soft brush or sponge using a cold or lukewarm solution of water and mild dishwashing soap, such as Ivory Snow or Woolite (¼ cup per gallon works well). Once clean, rinse the canvas thoroughly to remove all soapy residue. Avoid letting soap dry on the canvas while cleaning (clean and rinse in smaller sections if needed to prevent this) and never use harsh detergents, abrasive cleaners or solvents, as they can damage the protective coating that provides waterproofing and mildew resistance. The same goes for high-pressure washers, steam cleaners and dry cleaning. Once clean, allow your canvas to air dry only, meaning no heat guns or running it through a household dryer, both of which can also damage the fabric’s protective coating.

Don’t forget the zippers! Zippers typically receive little maintenance, yet are expected to perform flawlessly with continued use. Zippers should be lubricated periodically to ensure smooth operation. While there are a number of commercial products available, plain old Chapstick works well and is inexpensive. Avoid silicone-based lubricants and petroleum-based products (i.e. petroleum jelly) as they tend to attract dirt. Reduce zipper problems by flushing zippers with freshwater regularly, pulling zipper sides together when closing, and slowing down your zipping speed, particularly around tight corners or turns.

Damage control Regular inspections and maintenance will help increase the life of your canvas. Inspect canvas after each cleaning for chafing, holes and tears, and promptly repair any damage found.

|

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

Barring physical damage to the canvas, stitching is usually the first causality due to factors such as abrasion, UV exposure, harsh cleaning agents, and constant tension and flexing cycles. Inspect stitching for fuzzy, thin or broken threads. You can also check thread condition by lightly scratching it with a fingernail to see if it breaks or comes loose. Once seams begin to fail, the panel will begin to lose its shape. Repairing seams will be more costly and difficult the longer you wait. Finally, check all canvas for proper fit and tension. Loose, baggy, or otherwise ill fitting canvas will flap and chafe, which greatly reduces service life. ★

PHOTOS BY CAPT. FRANK LANIER

Stain removal The trick to successful stain removal is to start low-key, then gradually increase your cleaning efforts to avoid damaging the canvas and coating. For stains that resist a gentle scrubbing during normal cleaning, try a weak solution (⅛ cup per gallon) of soapy water and a nonchlorine bleach product, such as Clorox II or Ultra VIVID. Gently scrub the stain with a soft bristle brush, let sit for up to 15 minutes and then rinse thoroughly. The use of chlorine bleach or harsh chemicals (for example, mildew removers) should be considered a last resort, as damage to the waterproof finish and polyester

( CAPTFKLANIER.COM ).

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2017

Waterproofing renewal Most exterior canvas is treated with a finish that repels water and protects against mildew and UV damage. At some point, either due to age (typically around 5 years) or after deep cleaning, you’ll need to replenish this waterproof coating. One product that receives consistently good reviews is 303 High Tech Fabric Guard. After the canvas is clean and dry, apply a thin, even coat of 303 Fabric Guard following the instructions on the container. When completely dry, follow up with a second thin, even coat — two light coats are more effective than a single heavy one.

Mold and mildew You can treat canvas with a commercial mold preventative, such as Lysol; however, a cheaper, greener alternative is spraying it (particularly the undersides) with a 50/50 mixture of water and white vinegar after each washing or heavy rain.

thread will likely occur. Again, start with a weak solution of bleach (¼ cup per gallon of soapy water) and add more bleach only as necessary to get the job done. As soon as the stain fades, rinse the canvas thoroughly with freshwater.

ELECTRONICS by Glenn Hayes

Bargain Hunter Finding the best deals on electronics.

T

he holiday season is fast approaching and with it some fantastic shopping deals. Before clicking that “add to cart” button, there are a few things to consider when searching for that perfect boating gadget you’ve had your eye on; a little research and prudence can go a long way. Do your homework There are countless vendors selling marine electronics online with vast differences in pricing. Before mindlessly snagging the cheapest deal, you need to proceed with caution and make sure you are comparing apples to apples. If not, you may be disappointed in what shows up at your doorstep. Check for the manufacturer’s model numbers and make sure they match up to what you are looking for. A good start is to visit the manufacturer’s website and investigate the different models available. Once you have narrowed it down, take note of the numbers for the specific models you are interested in. You can refer back to these numbers during your online search. For example, a particular chartplotter on one website may seem hundreds of dollars cheaper than a competitor’s, but it may not include the same charts — if any at all. There are different levels of detail available depending on charting that may or may not be preloaded or included. “Base map” models have very rudimentary charts, if any. These base models can lack buoy, channel marker and depth contour information. If you get a cheaper base model, check to see how much added chart cards or downloads will cost. Many times the cost will be greater than preloaded charts, and savings will be lost. Check to see if a transducer is included in the package if purchasing combination units with fish finders and sounders built in. Some models will contain a transducer and others may not. If a transducer is included, make sure it’s appropriate for your vessel. Is the transducer the right frequency and type that will work for your application? A quick call to the manufacturer will confirm suitability. If a package deal is not for you, then that same call can be used to confirm a transducer model number that will suit your particular application. That, too, can be sourced and priced prior to purchase. Calling the manufacturer for information will garner great results, as will visiting your local marine electronics dealer or retailer. Many stores will have units on display, and there’s no better way to get a feel for the product than pushing buttons and testing out operation. An easy return policy should something go wrong is another advantage to buying locally. Some vendors add extended warranties that may or may not be worth the investment depending on the fine print. Some warranties are better than others, and research and conformation of policies is wise. Better

protection plans add to the manufacturer’s warranty and cover faults, damage and such things as power spikes while offering repair or replacement from day one of the purchase. Some even offer on-board repairs. Bargain hunters If you are a bargain hunter, there are a few things you can do to keep some of that hard-earned money. First and most obvious, look for sales and featured items at local dealers, big box retailers and online. As the holidays approach, retailers push harder to increase sales; special offers will pop up as time passes. Sign up for email blasts with exclusive offers and be the first to learn of special prices. You can always cancel the email notifications after the holidays if you don’t want to continue getting inundated with offers. Look for remanufactured units, as they can offer substantial savings over new in-box units. It’s important to take note if a unit is remanufactured and the warranty offered justifies the savings. Many remanufactured units have been thoroughly checked and can offer a better value than a regular production line unit. If the latest and greatest isn’t always what you want, discontinued units offer substantial discounts. If you go this route, be sure to check and make sure how long the unit will be supported — you don’t want to end up with technology that is unserviceable. Some devices that are going to be phased out or replaced with a new model will have some kind of rebate or free add-on offer, so look for these as they can add value. Once you have found that ideal electronic for the right price, confirm the vendor’s return policy. If possible pay with a credit card from a bank that will work with you should you have to dispute the charges. A little research and prudence will make sure that gift to another — or yourself — is the perfect one. ★

ASK THE EXPERT by Elizabeth Altick

Lakefront Living Northern Michigan realtor Pat O’Brien gives tips on buying and selling prime waterfront properties. LB: We understand your company handles scenic properties in northern Michigan, including many homes in East Jordan, Charlevoix and Boyne City. What types of homes do you have in your portfolio?

O’Brien: We mostly focus on waterfront properties and second homes. Many are on Lake Charlevoix. The lake offers easy docking and access for larger boats, and is a phenomenal all-sports lake. LB: Why is northern Michigan a popular area to purchase real estate?

Pat O’Brien and Associates Real Estate 128 Water St. Boyne City, MI 49712 231-675-6677 patobrien.com

O’Brien: Simply put, it’s the beauty. The scenery is like no place else. I have talked to people who have traveled this country from top to bottom, and they say there’s nowhere like it. Northern Michigan is colorful with fall colors, turquoise lakes and greenery — it’s gorgeous. No other region offers what the Great Lakes have, and we’re in the heart of it all.

regulations were met. If it’s a vacant piece of property, the things to consider are wetlands, setbacks, greenbelts, high water tables, and all zoning rules and regulations. These are all good reasons to hire a realtor to walk you through the process.

LB: Why should buyers and sellers hire a realtor rather than handle the transaction themselves?

LB: What should buyers look for in docks on the property?

O’Brien: I can’t speak for all areas, but here it’s really helpful to have an expert who knows and understands values. Years back, purchases were made emotionally; that’s not always the best way to buy property. These days, there are many resources to help buyers make good decisions, and realtors can be a big part of providing and interpreting that information. Recently, I have had several acquaintances who have opted to buy a for-sale-by-owner property. Ultimately, they ended up coming to me to walk them through the entire process, and deal with all the paperwork, inspectors, lenders, appraisers, surveyors and title companies. If you don’t do this all the time, you’re likely to be overwhelmed. Save yourself some time and headaches — hire a realtor.

O’Brien: You should look carefully at the condition of the dock. In our area, we have both seasonal and permanent systems. The seasonal docks are placed each spring and removed in the fall; our area is probably a little better suited for those types of docks. Look for systems that are durable enough to withstand rough water, strong winds and changing currents. As far as permanent docks are concerned, more and more flotation-type permanent docks are being installed.

LB: What do buyers look for in a waterfront property?

O’Brien: Tough question. Everyone’s looking for something different. Sunsets are important to some people, others want sandy beaches, protected docking, deep water, wooded lots, proximity to larger towns or water views. Everybody’s hot button is different, which is why it’s important for me to listen and understand what a buyer really wants.

LB: What are the most common mistakes waterfront buyers make?

O’Brien: I think that with all the information available today, home buyers tend to have researched, evaluated, compared, assessed and appraised the properties they’re looking at, so they’re not making a lot of mistakes. Occasionally, they might look back and wonder if they should have gotten something bigger. LB: What mistakes do sellers commonly make?

O’Brien: Considering that a person’s home is probably the largest asset they have, again it’s important to enlist the help of a professional. Talk to two or three people who have sold locally and get recommendations. Then choose a realtor you trust and let that person do their job. The biggest mistake sellers make, in my view, is not trusting the expert to do the job they’ve been hired to do. ★

here’s no question that center consoles have completely dominated North American boat sales in recent years, and it’s easy to understand why. Building off their hardcore fishing roots, today’s center consoles have evolved into true multipurpose boats that are equally at home trolling big water for trophy fish as they are taking the family for lunch stops in distant ports or towing the kids around on a tube. Their low maintenance and approachability appeal to boaters who don’t want to spend hours tidying up at the end of the day. And, perhaps most of all, center consoles are just really fun to drive.

For Hartsville, South Carolina-based Stingray Boats, approachability and family fun have always gone hand-in-hand. Perhaps that’s why its all-new 236CC is already catching the attention of boaters across the Great Lakes. The third entry in the company’s center console line, the 236CC builds upon the benchmarks that Stingray established when it unveiled its 19-foot 186CC and 20-foot 206CC models last year. More than just a larger version in the lineup, the 236CC advances the overall design and incorporates further enhancements to give it even greater capabilities and performance.

Best seats in the house

The fun-to-drive part begins with Stingray’s Z-plane hull. The so-called Z-planes incorporated into the lower hull surface act as horizontal planing faces when the boat is idle, helping it leap onto plane quickly once power is applied. With the boat up and running, the Z-planes control spray and ensure that the boat’s running surface passes through water that’s free of any bubbles or vortices that could reduce performance. The smooth flow of water generated by this design is said to also allow the propeller to gain a smoother bite during both straight-line speed and hard-cornering maneuvers. The other advantage of the Z-plane hull is that it allows the boat to achieve impressive performance with less than maximum horsepower. But more on that in a moment. The Z-plane hull’s computerized design has taken Stingray’s manufacturing accuracy to incredible levels; to tolerances of a near- microscopic 1/1,000 of an inch. This level of precision let’s designers create a 3D computerized model of the boat. It even lets the designers plant scaled 3D human models into the seats and up on the decks during the design phase, allowing Stingray to actually form the inner hull around the driver and passengers. It sounds pretty cool, but to truly appreciate the benefits of the design you have to step aboard.

The big, open bow offers twin forward-facing lounge seats with integrated seatbacks and side coaming for comfort. Between them, a flat fiberglass, non-skid surface provides easy access to the bow; pop in a removable filler cushion for additional seating and sunning options. A fishing boat at its core, the 236CC offers an available mounting pad for a bow-mount electric motor, complete with an adjacent wiring harness. There’s a ton of storage space beneath those bow seat cushions, which are offset by handsome stainless steel grabrails and convenient in-gunnel stainless steel beverage holders. Pull-up cleats recess into the deck when not in use, reducing the possibility of stubbed toes or snagged fishing lines. The bow on many center consoles is usually a bit of a dead zone, but not so on the 236CC. To the contrary, the bow on this boat might offer the best seats in the house. A pair of stereo speakers located up front flood this area with sound. Elegant cabinets bookend the bow loungers, each complete with a solid-surface countertop and storage below. The starboard cabinet features a stylish sink with a collapsible faucet, while the portside cabinet offers a drainable covered tray, which works equally well for discarded popsicles or fishing bait. The main cockpit fiberglass floor is hard-wearing, non-skid and fully self-draining: Rain water simply runs down the deck and over the side. This sensible arrangement makes it a cinch to keep the boat clean; simply rinse it out with the optional wash-down hose at the end of the day and you’re good to go. For those who prefer it, seagrass flooring is also available as an option.

The bells and whistles

Look around and you’ll notice fishing rod storage racks in each of the gunnels, which just as easily secure boat hooks, mops and other bulky gear. A pair of stereo speakers reside in the gunnels as well, positioned amidships. The gunnel tops offer

four flush-mount, stainless steel rod holders and two stainless steel beverage holders per side, and still leave plenty of space at the stern for installing downriggers or other accessories. Across the stern you’ll find more innovative engineering in the form of a convertible full-width bench seat. The corner seats are actually jump seats that fold down flush when not required. The removable center cushion can quickly convert this space into a full-width raised casting deck. Two lids in the deck just inboard of the jump seats provide storage space and access to the standard aft 14-gallon livewell. The front face of the center console features a seat with a livewell in the base. The helm console features stainless grab handles on its sides for standing passengers, and a large, upright windshield with full side panels to protect the captain from wind and spray. The console is dominated on the port side by a large, stainless steel steering wheel with a turning knob and Zero Torque steering. A recessed storage nook on the center of the dash has a USB connection on one side and a 12V outlet on the other, creating an ideal spot to charge cell phones. An adjacent row of backlit rocker switches control electrical components like lighting, livewells, horn, bilge pumps and other accessories. Our review boat included a pair of Yamaha Command Link digital gauges to relay essential information — a worthwhile upgrade over the stock analog gauges. But most of the dash is left open as a wide, flat space for mounting large multi-function displays, such as the Garmin GPSMap SSV in our review boat. Most buyers will probably order the available 200-watt Polk audio system with Bluetooth connectivity. A large door on the port side of the console opens to reveal a bright and surprisingly spacious head compartment, which houses an optional porta-potti. This feature is a real treat in a 23-foot boat, and one which greatly enhances the 236CC’s family appeal.

A comfortable, double-wide leaning post with bolster seats houses a removable Engel 74-quart cooler in its base. Overhead, an optional Bimini top provides welcome relief from the midday sun. The Bimini may be further upgraded to a full fiberglass T-top, complete with overhead lights and an integrated storage cabinet. As I acquainted myself with the boat during the sea trial on South Carolina’s Robinson Lake, the shade provided by the T-top was greatly appreciated.

Inspiring confidence

Since my sea trial took place on a hot, humid afternoon in late September, I wasn’t too surprised to hear the rumble of thunder in the distance. A pair of 236CCs awaited on the dock: One with a light blue hull and a Bimini top, and a near-identical boat with a darker blue hull and a fiberglass T-top. Although the sun was still shining, the rumbling thunder and the prospect of rain suggested I start with the boat that had the most options installed. I also started with the T-top version because I saw it was rigged with a Yamaha F200, one of my favorite engines right now. Its light blue sibling had an F250 on the transom and I wanted to see how the 487-pound, four-cylinder 200 would run this boat compared to the much bigger V6. Although offering 50 fewer horsepower, the 200 also weighs 71 pounds less, and I reasoned this trade-off should make a great match. It didn’t take long to see just how wonderful a match this really is. Riding solo in the boat, the outboard tucked in with full negative trim, and the trim tabs in a neutral position, the 236CC literally rocketed out of the hole and onto plane in two seconds

flat. That’s seriously impressive for a 3,648-pound boat with a half tank of fuel in it, and really speaks to the efficiency of Stingray’s Z-Plane hull design. Nudging the trim up, the boat soon settled into a comfortable attitude, topping out at an indicated 47 mph on my GPS — which was confirmed by the in-dash Garmin GPSMap SSV — while turning the engine at an even 6,000 rpm. With the refined hum of the big Yamaha in the background and the Stingray’s large windshield and overhead T-top blocking out the wind, the cockpit was pleasantly quiet as I tore across the lake at wide-open throttle. While the straight-line accelerations were fun, the real joy in running the 236CC comes once you start turning the wheel. The Z-planes slice the water with every steering input. The boat simply goes wherever it’s pointed, without any fuss or fanfare. It’s the kind of boat that quickly inspires confidence with its easy control and great visibility. Indeed, the 236CC is so much fun to drive that I temporarily forgot all about work and the electrical storm brewing just a mile or so to the south. It

took a deafening crack of thunder followed by a searing bolt of lightning slashing into the trees nearby to lurch me back into the here-and-now. Glancing to the south, I could see heavy rain not far off in the distance. Stingray’s dock was on the other end of the lake, but I had a near 50 mph boat and maybe just enough time to get back before the storm arrived. So I did what any other red-blooded guy would do — I pinned the throttle and got the hell out of there. A few minutes later, I was idling up to the Stingray dock as a second lightning bolt flashed about halfway down the lake. All too quickly, the sea trials were over. Stingray’s 236CC has a lot to offer with its comfortable seating, thoughtful amenities and spirited performance. Its 21-degree deadrise Z-Plane hull seems like a natural for the Great Lakes, while its speed and range are perfect for boaters to explore distant shores, whether it’s a day trip to a distant island or a lunch date in a far-off port. With the versatility to do it all, this is one boat that every member of the family can enjoy. H

half-century ago, commercial fishermen aboard the Dellie W out of Menominee, Michigan snagged their trawling net on something in the depths of Green Bay. When they couldn’t free it, Captain Dick Garbowski cut the lead line, marked the location and pointed the Dellie W’s bow toward the Wisconsin shore. He was looking for Frank Hoffman, a Chicago transplant who ran a tavern and motel in the village of Egg Harbor. Hoffman was an experienced diver, and his place had a reputation as a divers’ hangout. Garbowski asked Hoffman to help him untangle and retrieve the expensive nylon net. Hoffman agreed, and the Dellie W cruised back to the cold, windy site off Chambers Island. Hoffman donned his gear and descended more than 100 feet into the dark, murky water. It was November 1, 1967, and Frank Hoffman was about to meet the lost 19th century brigantine Alvin Clark.

One of the most interesting artifacts was retrieved from the ship’s galley. The center container held a “crock cheese,” a common staple on sailing ships. The cheese was still edible and the bacteria used to ferment it was still viable. Experts at Kraft Foods claimed it was the oldest sample of edible cheese ever found worldwide — 105 years old in 1969.

Built in Detroit in 1846, the Alvin Clark was a centerboard canaler, roughly 106 feet long and 25 feet wide, designed to carry as much cargo as possible and still fit in the Welland Canal’s locks. She spent her early years in the salt trade, primarily between Buffalo, New York, and various ports on Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. When the salt trade started to fold, the Clark was sold to G.W. Bissell, and port records show her all over the lakes carrying coal, grain, salt and lumber. Then, Bissell sold her to the Racine, Wisconsin-based Higgie brothers, William and Francis. “Both the Higgies were lake captains with a streak of skullduggery,” says Dr. Richard “Dick” Boyd, an authority on Great Lakes maritime archaeology and maritime history. “They’d pick an area in the government timberlands, find an unscrupulous sawmill, hire a captain and crew who weren’t uneasy about carrying contraband, and then rip off the timber.” The federal government hired timber marshals to arrest the culprits and collect taxes. They were met with limited success, particularly where the Alvin Clark was concerned. “In one story, they arrested the captain and impounded the ship,” Boyd says. “The crew busted him out, reloaded the cargo and escaped. In other stories, the captain bribed his way out. The Clark was essentially a pirate ship.” The pirate ship’s luck ran out on June 19, 1864. After running through the notorious Death’s Door passage on her way to Oconto, Wisconsin, she was hit by a windstorm approximately 2 miles north of Chambers Island. “Reports from that time indicate a terrible tornadic storm across the bay that wreaked havoc on Chambers Island,” Boyd says. “The Clark capsized and sank. Of her crew of five, two were saved by passing vessels.” Loved ones mourned the dead, the survivors carried on with living, and the Alvin Clark settled into the silt at the bottom of Green Bay. There she would sit for more than a century, until Frank Hoffman happened upon her.

A ship’s luck runs out

An unprecedented find

“The Garbowski boys said something was down there,” Boyd says. “So Frank made the dive. It was deep, cold and dark. Not a great place for a single diver.” Hoffman apparently agreed with this assessment. In a late 1960s film produced by the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay for the Educational Communities Board, he describes the nightmarish conditions at that depth: Visibility of perhaps a foot or two; 38-degree water; and intense pressure of 50 pounds per square inch, four times that at the surface, which compressed wetsuits to the thickness of newspaper. Add to that a largely unseen wreck, a tangled fishing net, and silt that would “stir up and would hang in the water,” Hoffman says in the film. “It was like swimming through a bottle of India ink. And you only carry so much life on your back. I never was so happy to get up on top as I was after that dive.” Hoffman was determined, however, and a few days later he returned with a group of close diving friends. Dick Boyd was among them. “There were maybe 10 or 12 of us,” Boyd says. “We tried to get the net off but it was lodged on the deadeyes on the rail and on the front windlass. It would be a God-awful job getting it off.” Then a new realization set in. This was more than an old sailing ship. It was a totally intact vessel, and her two masts were still standing, soaring to within 40 feet of the surface. No one had found anything like this before in the Great Lakes. “As you can imagine, there was great excitement,” Boyd says with a chuckle. “While we were in Egg Harbor, celebrating perhaps a little too much, the Dellie W ’s moorings broke. It took us 10 days to get her off a reef, and by then the diving season was over. We were well into the gales of November.” Forced to wait until spring, Hoffman swore his team to secrecy. He didn’t want souvenir hunters to trash the site before they could get back to the wreck. Word got out nonetheless, and as the 1968 diving season began, interest in the “Mystery Ship from 19 Fathoms” sparked and quickly became a wildfire.

Above left: Some dives were made in spring 1968 to remove the nets using Hoffman’s old dive boats. As the discovery of an intact schooner gained notoriety, Harold Derusha of Marinette Marine Corp. loaned this steel-hulled, 60-foot LCM-6 for the duration of the project. The vessel, Cleo’s Barge, was outfitted with a large salvage pump, dive air compressor and other important equipment. Above: The LCM’s salvage pump could displace silt from within the Clark at a high rate. Diver Bernie Bloom fills scuba tanks as the pump blasts silt from the wreck into adjacent waters. Before expulsion, the silt passed through several filters to catch the smallest artifacts.

Resurrecting the Alvin Clark

In the late 1960s, scuba diving held almost the same appeal as space travel among the general public. The gear was fascinating, the exploits daring and the underwater environment a final frontier on Earth. It led to a Wild West atmosphere that stunned the divers, who initially focused on recovering artifacts and discovering the Mystery Ship’s identity. “It was a furor,” Boyd recalls. “They were all here: National Geographic, Walter Cronkite, Roger Mudd. We were being covered by every paper in the country.” Attention wasn’t the only thing pouring in. The team also began receiving support in the form of equipment and funding. “We had 20,000 cubic feet of silt we were trying to remove with a suction pump system on deck, and we were rotating between Hoffman’s 30-footers, Sea Ranger and Sea Witch,” Boyd says.

He continues, “We called them three-man boats: One to drive, one to keep the engine running, and one to bail. We were never going to get the job done.” Then Harold and Jim Derusha of Marinette Marine got involved, donating a 60-foot, World War II-era LCM 6 landing craft with a 10-inch suction pump and lifting equipment. It was a dream come true. The work, however, remained daunting. One diver would descend along the mast, sit on the suction head and use a shovel to whack and scrape the silt so the head could pick it up. A safety diver would sit on the front gate of the LCM; if the working diver’s bubbles were not at the mast at the 15-minute mark, the safety diver would jump in. If the working diver was right on time, the safety diver would become the working diver, with more divers behind him in the line-up. “We made sure each diver had two times the amount of air he’d need, and we kept rotating guys,” Boyd says. “We had maybe 20 on-board, and each guy might dive two to three times a day. We tried two divers at a time, but with the poor visibility and the kind of equipment we were using, it was too dangerous. So we came up with our own system.” It worked. Not only did the team complete roughly 3,300 dives without a serious accident, they changed their mission. They decided to raise the ship. First, they used a hydraulic ram to remove the mast wedges that supported, as Boyd put it, “these doggone trees.” Next, a 75-foot boom crane hauled the two masts. Then, the team used an ingenious system to blast water along the curvature of the hull, breaking the silty suction so a dredging head could shoot nylon line through the holes. That line dragged six cables underneath the nearly 220-ton ship, which finally lifted free of the bottom on July 23, 1969. “We decided to winch her up manually,” Boyd says. “We had four winches, and 100 turns would raise her about 6 inches. So we got 75 guys to man the winches. It took us almost 12 hours to get her 20 feet below the barge.” The team towed the barge to shallower water, cranked the ship in further, and then headed into Marinette. There, on July 29, thousands of spectators lined the docks as the nearly perfectly preserved Mystery Ship saw the light of day for the first time in 105 years. “It was a tremendous feeling,” Frank Hoffman recalls in the UW-GB film. “We had never seen the ship in her entirety. We were as very much amazed as everyone else was.” “We lifted her up, pumped out the water, and slacked the cables,” Boyd says. “Two hours later, she was floating on her own. It was a real unbelievable feeling.”

Soon, the world knew the Mystery Ship’s real name. Nineteenth century newspaper accounts reported that an Alvin Clark — with specifications matching those of the Mystery Ship — had sunk off Chambers Island. While the dive team never found a name board on the wreck, circumstantial evidence left no doubt. Throughout the summer of ’68, the divers carefully recovered artifacts from the ship, which James Quinn, director of Green Bay’s Neville Public Museum, and a member of Hoffman’s team catalogued. Among these artifacts were porcelain pieces dating to the pre-Civil War

era and a trunk belonging to a Michael Cray of Toronto. Cray was one of the Clark’s two surviving sailors. That was, Boyd says, the clincher. Hoffman moored the ship in nearby Menominee, created the Mystery Ship Seaport and Museum, and turned her into a tourist attraction. As author Marlin Bree observes in his book “Broken Seas”: “Those who saw her marveled: She looked a lot like when she went down, only with her wood silvered and gray. The noted naval historian, Howard Chapelle, of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., wrote to Hoffman, ‘This is a true treasure of the Great Lakes. Your recovery of the schooner is of far greater importance than a few gold coins or a hull fragment of a supposed treasure ship. In your find we will now be able to put together in great part the real working craft of the past.’” Unfortunately, it was not to be. Entry fees fell far short of what Hoffman needed to preserve and maintain the Alvin Clark, and in the open air she quickly deteriorated. “Hoffman, saddled with debt and his love for the old ship, turned everywhere for help, but met only failure,” Bree writes. “The Clark was too big to move on land, too rotted to put to sea, and no museum felt like it had the resources to take on a project the size of the Clark… Hoffman and his volunteers had brought back this treasure from the depths at great sacrifice, with great courage and great persistence, and she was rotting away.” Although Hoffman finally did sell the Clark to new owners in the mid-1980s, it was too late. The ship was bulldozed in 1994, and her remains were carted off to a landfill. It was a heartbreaking end for the Clark, which quietly rested on the lake bottom for 105 years but couldn’t survive 25 years on land. “The whole Clark affair was driven by the excitement of diving and salvage, not by a passion for preservation or historical significance,” Boyd says. “She needed a protective building with environmental controls, but once the ship was raised, the interest and money dried up. I saw a 1971 photo of the seaport’s parking lot, and there was one car. That tells the whole story. There was no money, no personnel, no expertise and no meaningful precedent.” But the Alvin Clark did not die in vain. This maritime tragedy on land set the stage for the Abandoned Shipwrecks Act in 1987 and a variety of valuable state-level initiatives, such as the Wisconsin Historical Society’s Maritime Preservation and Archaeology Program. Other wrecks would not suffer the Clark’s fate or the rampant underwater pillaging that defined the early scuba era. “She was a project before her time,” Boyd says. “Today, with the interest in cultural resources, we could have saved her. She taught us such valuable lessons about archaeology and how not to do things, and about the more mundane aspects of preservation and presentation. “No one had ever found anything like her,” Boyd reflects. “Over time, we realized how special she was. She became an icon.” ★

Do I Need Boat Insurance?

YOU’RE PROBABLY NOT REQUIRED by law to have boat insurance, but that doesn’t mean you don’t need it. Even if your state does not require you to carry boat insurance, your bank will if you have a loan on the boat. Also, most marinas require proof of liability insurance before they will accept a contract for a slip or a mooring. If you’re required to carry boat insurance, your homeowner policy will generally not be acceptable to them because homeowner’s policies are usually limited to boats under a certain size or value, and they don’t have the necessary provisions to cover the types of losses that may occur with a boat. Look for “All Risk” policies, which provide coverage for a broad array of calamities that could befall your boat, including theft, vandalism, lightning, fire, grounding or sinking, and lost or stolen belongings. Look for options that will protect your personal items, such as watersports equipment and fishing gear, as well as provide towing coverage in the unfortunate event of a breakdown. Many companies also give you the option for an inexpensive policy that does not insure physical damage to your boat at all, but only provides a specified amount of coverage for your liability to others in the event of an accident, as well as protection from uninsured boaters. Even if you are not otherwise required to have insurance and your boat is not worth very much, you should still consider insuring it. A collision with a small powerboat can cause serious injuries, and even if you are not found liable for those injuries, you could end up spending a significant amount of money in legal fees to defend yourself. Get a quote on several different policies so you can make an informed decision based on the coverages versus the cost. The more your boat is worth, the more important insurance becomes to protect yourself from financial loss.

“What is comfort?” Absolute 58 Fly

When asked “What is comfort?” shipyard designers respond with the new Absolute 58 Fly. In the innovative tradition of Sergio Maggi’s pencil, this project expresses aesthetics and stylistic values. From the very first look, you will notice and appreciate the black band that hides the large windows, as well as the charming profile of the unique sides pattern. The external motif full of curves and detail is the result of significant investments. Among the functional strengths of this model, which are constant and recognizable in the whole Absolute range: The starboard deck access via a manual door opening; access to the fourth cabin from the aft platform (one of a kind on 58-foot yachts); the third mooring control station in the cockpit, which is very convenient when maneuvering thanks to the IPS, a distinctive mark of the Absolute range; and the cockpit sofa, which easily turns into a single or triple sunbathing space. The 58 Fly is powered by twin Volvo Penta D8IPS15/800 engines. Besides meeting the practical needs, the Absolute 58 Fly also features harmonious integration of materials and cutting-edge technologies. For instance, the LED lights and panels create a continuity line that elegantly connects cockpit and salon. Innovations are implemented in the salon: All the linings are rich in lacquered woods; the air-conditioning system is silent, efficient, ergonomic and almost invisible; and wide glass windows and mirrors create an airy space. All the furnishings have rounded edges, ensuring

maximum safety, creating an elegant shape and making the best use of the available rooms. The 45-degree galley is an example of perfect usability thanks to the electrical sliding glass between the galley’s sink and the back of the sofa. Descending to the lower deck, the three cabins are marked by wide windows that brighten the rooms. All of the cabins feature wide and rectangular beds: The master cabin and bow VIP cabin beds are king-size, while the guest cabin berth is convertible into two single beds with a simple manipulation. Elegant and high-end finishing are found in the three ensuite bathrooms, which feature sliding doors to optimize space.

Introducing the new Carver Yachts C34 Coupe

CARVER YACHTS, HAS just completed the first sea trials of its new C34 Coupe. This new Coupe offers all the features and amenities for which Carver Yachts is well known – space utilization, accommodations, storage, quality and craftsmanship and affordability. Starting with its bold styling, expansive interior layout with optional private guest accommodations and solid Carver quality and construction, the C34 Coupe offers an entirely new level of comfort and seaworthiness in its class. Its first sea trials revealed a quiet, dry ride and exceptional performance. With twin 300 HP Mercury MerCruiser stern drives, and a 2’ to 3’ chop, the C34 Coupe topped out at 35.5 knots with a full load. The C34’s main level offers a well-appointed galley with solidsurface countertops, a comfortable U-shaped dinette with adjustable high-low dining table and filler cushions, opening salon windows with screens, and a large, optional retractable sunroof provides ample ventilation and natural light. European-style sliding glass doors create a seamless indoor-outdoor living space from salon to cockpit. The starboard helm station incorporates an adjustable seat, allowing the driver to stand or sit. It also provides substantial space for today’s most popular navigation systems, instrumentation and electronics. Cabin headroom throughout main level is a best-in-class, 6 feet, 8 inches, with as much as 6 feet, 5 inches in the lower level. Just a few steps down from the salon, the C34’s forward stateroom

features a large berth, ample storage and plenty of natural light. Also on the lower level is a comfortable L-shaped sofa that converts to a full-size berth. The head offers a separate enclosed shower stall, very rare feature in a boat this size, and a vanity with solid-surface countertop and vessel sink. The C34’s cockpit features L-shaped lounge seating and an optional cocktail table. There’s also plenty of stowage for fenders and lines, as well as easy engine access. A starboard transom door leads to a large, integrated swim platform, available with an optional grill, entertainment center and an optional hydraulic swim platform. Within the C34’s beautiful design and appointments lies the true heart and soul of every Carver Yacht. To keep the C34 lighter without sacrificing strength, Carver uses a unique vacuum infused resin technology that draws in a precise amount of resin to saturate the fiberglass laminate, rather than “over wetting” like other processes can do. This state-of-the-art technology, used to create the hull and many other component parts, results in the elimination of voids and excess fiberglass and resin build-up making the part both lighter and stronger. Next, fiberglass stringers provide additional structural integrity, reinforcing the bow as well as the hull bottom. These stringers are created using multiple layers of fiberglass-engineered fabric for lighter weight, superior strength and resistance to water damage, making the C34 one of the strongest, and best performing boats in its class.

Marlow Explorer

IN THE YACHTING WORLD, there are perhaps two or three other boatbuilding companies today that may compare to a Marlow for brilliant engineering, traditional luxury and superb craftsmanship. Ranging in size from 49 to 97 feet, Marlow Yachts are cuttingedge artisan works, from their exotic aviation standards hull to the understated elegance of the main salon and inviting accommodations. Exquisite finishes abound on-board a Marlow Explorer with stone, exotic woods, fabrics and leather combining in aesthetically pleasing and balanced spaces. Our tankage for all liquids are built in house only, surpass every regulation worldwide, and are often called military aircraftlike in their approach to design, safety and engineering. The hardware and fittings used by Marlow Yachts are not similar in design, engineering or longevity to the off-the-shelf products used by over 99 percent of the boatbuilders today. If we cannot buy the best, we build it in our own state-of-the-art waterfront facility. Seaworthiness is the hallmark of all Marlow Explorers. Our extensive use of Kevlar®, carbon fiber and specifically sewn fabrics (intended for the precise loads encountered with the proprietary Full-Stack Infusion® process) produces vastly stronger and more durable hulls that are able

to take on the sea. We use only three main component molds for our yachts, which means far fewer seams and less ability for water intrusion. Our engine room is full height across the entire Marlow Explorer line enabling easier access for general maintenance. All Marlow Explorer yachts are constructed with our proprietary Strut Keel® designed to protect vital running gear from grounding or debris damage. The struts, combined with our semi-displacement hulls, provide superior tracking, positive fuel efficiency coefficients and smoother cruising underway. When you experience a Marlow Explorer for the first time, be prepared to fall in love with a yacht like no other. Designed and built to explore your world, from the “Great Loop” to a global circumnavigation, she will perform impeccably. njoy Catawba Island living with all the bells and whistles: Professional Har-Tru clay tennis courts, an indoor heated pool, close proximity to Kelleys Island and Lakeside Chautauqua, and, best of all, a 7-acre deepwater marina right in your front yard. This newly updated two-bedroom, two-bathroom condo — part of the 20-acre LeMarin Condominiums and Marina gated community — boasts tall ceilings and a covered deck with spectacular sunrise and lake views. “It’s a resort within a resort,” says realtor Sharon Woodson. “There’s no reason to leave the complex. You can have social events, graduations, reunions and even weddings in the clubhouse. Relax at the lake, take a deep breath, or bring a kayak down to the water and take off.” Dock your boat at the private marina’s 40-foot floating dock, take a walk to the secluded Lake Erie beach, or drive a golf cart to the association’s many amenities. In addition to the indoor pool, the association’s clubhouse features a fitness room, a full kitchen, meeting rooms, a large sun bathing deck, a steam room and saunas.

If that’s not enough, venture out to the many Lake Erie island communities within walking, driving and boating distance. This condo is in the heart of vacationland. Fine dining, local events and shopping are nearby, and a round of golf at the Arthur Hills Championship Catawaba Island Club golf course is just a walk across the street. Hop on the Miller Ferry and explore Put-in-Bay and Middle Bass Island. The options are endless. “There is something to do here every weekend but it’s also low-key,” Woodson says. With 1,290 square feet of living space, a wood-burning fireplace and an open floorplan, the condo offers more than enough space for a young family or empty nesters who seek a lakeside retreat. Priced right and conveniently located, this condo is a boater’s dream. Add in the lake view, abundant amenities and friendly community and you’ll never want to leave. “It’s a boating and fishing community filled with people who want to be at the lake,” Woodson says. “There’s a view here for everyone.” ★

Dear friends and fellow boaters, You’ve probably heard the expression, “The two happiest days of a boater’s life are the day they buy a boat and the day they sell their boat.” For the past 34 years, I’ve had the pleasure of being part of many of those happy days, working with amazing people and making good friends. I can’t imagine a more enjoyable career or better memories to carry into retirement. I will retire from the boat business on December 15, 2017.

CLASSIC CRAFTS by Kate Bush

Classic boats commonly get a refit and a second life on the water. What’s more uncommon is when that yacht gets modern updates that rival new competitors. That’s what owner Alan Falls has done with this modern twist on a timeless, classic yacht. The 1960 Hatteras Knit-Wit was the 11th boat and the first fiberglass boat more than 40 feet ever produced by Hatteras Yacht Company. She was originally sold new at the 1960 New York Boat Show, after which she was delivered to the Great Lakes where she’s been ever since. In 2015, Falls began a multi-thousand dollar restoration on the Knit-Wit. She has been rebuilt from the props up using the most modern technologies available and a high-end finish that would rival a new custom sportfish. The restoration includes electric power steering, a bowthruster and twin Garmin arrays at the helm. LED lighting, smart TVs and eight house batteries plus an inverter were added down below. Custom furniture fills the salon, while solid surface countertops, an electric stove and a full-size stainless steel fridge finish out the galley. Both staterooms offer LED reading lamps, memory foam mattresses, USB ports and heat/ac. An electric Vacuflush toilet and fiberglass shower modernize the head. Everything on this boat is new, including tankage, wiring, plumbing, interior and exterior paint and varnish, flooring, headliners and fabrics. Custom hatches in the cockpit floor are covered, and synthetic teak and a custom welded stair set were added for access to the bridge. You name it and this boat has it. ★ —Alan Falls, Charlevoix, MI Email kbush@lakelandboating.com if you have a Classic Craft with a good story to share!
