Fishing Club Rock Reef Project Article and Photos by Mitch Feucht

After successfully constructing our first rock reef in September, we have now completed two additional rock reefs. All three rock reefs are located in the “No Wake” area of the East Marina. The GPS coordinates are as follows: REEF #1 N 42 degrees 09.962 minutes, W 89 degrees 52.055 minutes. Runs East & West and is 40 – 45’ long REEF #2 N 42 degrees 09.977 minutes, W 89 degrees 52.027 minutes. Runs North & South and is 40 – 45’ long REEF #3 N 42 degrees 10.007 minutes, W 89 degrees 51.925 minutes. Runs East & West and is 50 – 55’ long Each reef installation seems to go quicker than the prior one, so perhaps we are improving with practice. In case you might be wondering, it takes about 100 ton of rock to complete one reef. Having use of the new barge, push boat and mini-excavator has made possible the completion of these rock reefs. We definitely want to thank Rusty Block from Lake Carroll Maintenance Department for his skillful operation of both the backhoe to load the rock and the mini-excavator to push the rock off the barge.

Thanks also to Shaun Nordlie and his staff for delivering the rock and providing support for the project.

We hope to continue this project next year, perhaps with construction of a rock reef in another section of the lake. Our goal is to improve fish habitat in the lake, which should result in better fishing for us all.

GM Report

The budget has demanded much of my time over the past three months and I’m relieved that the process has concluded. The Committees and the Board worked tirelessly to assemble a budget which best addresses the current and future needs of the Association.

By the time you read this article, we will know the outcome of the 2015 Budget.

In other news, I am glad to announce that we have recently filled two vacant positions. I am very pleased to introduce our new Building Inspector, Mr. Mike Ejnik. Mike is a retired Chicago Mike Schmieder Policeman who spent time as a General Contractor and a realtor.

General Manager Mike is also a Lake Carroll Member with a home here, as well as one in the suburbs. For those of you who plan to have work done to your home and on your property, Mike looks forward to helping you through the process.

I am also very excited to announce the hiring of Mr. Troy Tucker as our new Chef and Kitchen Manager. Many of you have already enjoyed Troy’s delicious work at Bella’s in Mt. Carroll. Troy is a true culinary professional and I am anxious to work with him to incorporate his creative ideas into our menu. As part of my job, I will also allow Troy to try his specials on me first, just to make sure that it’s ready to be served to you. Welcome aboard guys.

I would like to take a moment to thank Mr. Dave Soldat for serving on the Board, for the past three years. During that time, I’ve had the opportunity to get to know Dave and it has been my pleasure to have had the chance to work with him. Dave’s commitment to service and his concern for the Lake Carroll Community are much appreciated and he’ll be missed.

2015 ASSOCIATION BILLING & INFORMATION SHEETS The office staff is preparing for the mailing of the 2015 Annual Dues packet. This information will be sent during the month of December in 6x9 black and white Lake Carroll envelopes. We ask you to examine all the information carefully. As in previous years, your 2015 completed & updated information sheet must be returned (with your monies) before new decals will be issued. Include the bottom portion of your billing statement with your payment & completed information sheet. Payments must be postmarked by January 31, 2015 to avoid $100 late fees. Using Credit Cards, Debit Cards & Gift Cards for the payment of Dues is no longer allowed. Visa/Master Credit Card Authorization forms are enclosed in the packet if you want to charge your mowing fees, decals, marina slips, golf trail & storage etc. Please check the appropriate line items. Authorization form needs to completed each year as old forms are destroyed annually. If you have dues or billing questions, call Julie 815-493-2552 x14. As always, please keep your credit card information up-to-date.

Please verify all your current information thoroughly. Print any changes legibly to help us update your files correctly and accurately. The photo ID Amenity cards are intended to be used for multiple years. DO NOT DISCARD THEM, there is a $20 replacement fee. Vehicle decals will not be issued until the make/model, year, license plate & PROOF OF OWNERSHIP (ie: State Registration Card or Title) is on file the Association Office for each vehicle. Once again, you will be required to provide proof of $500,000 liability for watercraft, off-road trail vehicles, snowmobiles, & golf carts. Lake Carroll Association must be named as an “Additional insured” on snowmobile & ATV policies. Make sure we have copies of your current insurance policies. Proof of membership in any snowmobile alliance is also a requirement for snowmobile registration at Lake Carroll. Copies of current State registrations must be on file for all boats & snowmobiles. Effective July 1, 2013, you are required to purchase an annual Water Usage Stamp for non-motorized watercraft, i.e. kayaks, canoes & paddleboats (available where they sell fishing licenses) You must provide the same Watercraft information used for registration to purchase the Stamps. If your current registration expires June 30, 2015, you will not need a stamp until that time. For more information, please see the IDNR’s website; http://www.dnr.illinois.gov/recreation/boating/Pages/ BoatingFAQs.aspx Trailer and Vehicle Camp Shelters being registered at Lake Carroll are required to show proof of ownership. Proof of ownership can be: Title, Insurance, and/or State License Plate registration. If you have registration & insurance questions, please call Karen or Missy at 815-493-2552 ext 10 or ext 20.

2015 BOAT SAFETY CLASS Lake Carroll has tentatively scheduled one Boat Safety Class for 2015. Saturday, March 21, 2015 is the date to mark on your calendar. This class will be held from 8am through 4:30pm at the Clubhouse (lower level). Sign-up information and more details will be in the February issue of the Lake Carroll News. A minimum of one member per lot must complete an IDNR Boat Safety course before watercraft may be registered at Lake Carroll.

2015 LAKE CARROLL HOMEOWNER PHONE DIRECTORY Lake Carroll Homeowners that have a Lanark (493 prefix) telephone number or cell phone number which is used as the primary number at your Lake residence will be included in the annual Directory to be published in April 2015. The ‘Lake Phone Number’ on your 2015 Information Sheet will be the number published in the directory. Please review and update ALL phone numbers.

Lake Carroll Homeowners wishing to be EXCLUDED from the 2015 Directory must return the form included with the 2015 Membership mailing on or before January 31, 2015. If this form is not returned to the office by January 31st, your name and Lake Carroll phone number will appear in the new directory when it is published.

2015 MARINA SLIP ASSIGNMENT PROCEDURES Deeded Boat Slips Bills for deeded boat slips will be mailed by December 26, 2014. These forms must be returned on or before January 16, 2015. Failure to submit the form & payment by January 16, 2015 will be considered a negative response and the slip will be made available to other members in good standing.

Assigned Boat Slips Members in good standing who had an assigned slip in 2014 will be sent bills by January 31, 2015.

These payments will be due on or before February 20, 2015. Failure to submit the form and payment by February 20, 2015 will be considered a negative response and the slip will be made available to other members in good standing.

East Marina Shoreline Slips East Marina Shoreline slip registration information will be mailed by December 26, 2014 to the members in good standing using these docks this past season. Payment will be due on or before January 16, 2015. Failure to submit the forms for the East Marina shoreline slips (by 1/16/15) will be considered a negative response and the slips will be made available to other property owners.

New Boat Slip Users/Non-Deeded The 1st Saturday in March (3/7/15) is the day for new boat slip users (non-deeded) to apply for a boat dock. Mark this date on your calendar to attend the Marina Slip Lottery. Further questions on assignments should be directed to Julie at 815-493-2552, ext 14. The Marina Slip Assignment & Payment Schedule is included in the Rules & Regulation Booklet.

GOLF STORAGE & TRAIL, CAMPGROUND SEASONAL & STORAGE & BOAT PARKING Bills for the above will be mailed approximately February 12, 2015. Payment will be due on or before 3/28/15. Decals will not be issued until payment and current insurance information is received.

SEASONAL CAMPSITE LOTTERY The Campground lottery will be held the 1st Saturday in March (3/7/15). This is the date for new seasonal campers to apply for a seasonal campsite. Further questions on campground assignments should be directed to the Front Desk Staff at 815-493-2552 ext 10 or 20.

Additionally, if you’ve registered with the LC Reverse911 Emergency Notification System and/or the Lake Carroll website, please also provide your updates to them, also.

2015 “REMOVABLE WINDOW CLING” GUEST PASSES Once again “Removable Window Cling” style guest (vehicle) passes will be issued in 2015. Please mark the appropriate space on the back of your information sheet if you will need these. Four passes (per lot) will be issued if they are requested. Each set of four will display identical numbers (i.e. 0051). Your section & lot number will not appear on the actual guest tag. The displayed number will be assigned to your database information (see sample). Per Lake Carroll Rules (Chapter 1, Section G, 1c), no guest passes may be used in member vehicles.

MEMBERSHIP PHOTO ID CARDS Thanks to all of you who have submitted photos for your membership cards. Your picture on your Amenity card is MANDATORY if you wish to exercise your use of the amenities (i.e. pools, ski hill, golf course, etc). The Front Desk Staff will continue to take and accept pictures (Monday through Saturday, 9am – 3pm) and electronic photo files may be sent to photoid@golakecarroll.com throughout the year.

The office staff may not be able to process your picture immediately as December & January are two of our busiest months. If you plan on using your amenity card at the ski hill or pool during the 2014-15 winter season, please submit your photos now or visit the Association Office soon.

REMINDER: The photo ID Amenity cards are intended to be used for multiple years. Do not discard them, there is a $20 replacement fee. This fee does not apply to updating children’s photos on their ID cards when significant growth changes have occurred.

All delinquent dues & fees must be paid in full to use the amenities (i.e. Aquatic Complex & Ski Hill) during the winter season. Thanks for your cooperation.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR POLICY The Lake Carroll News welcomes Letters to the Editor. Letters must be received at the Association office by the 18th of each month unless otherwise specified due to altered deadlines and adhere to the following guidelines: 1. Writers must be LCA members in good standing, reflect their viewpoint, focus on the issues and/or must be of interest to the majority of Lake Carroll members.

2. Letters should not contain personal attacks against any individual(s) or businesses and may not express personal grievances or conflicts.

3. Letters containing libelous material or statements, derogatory remarks or obscenities will not be published or are subject to editing after consultation between submitter and editor.

4. Constructive criticism is acceptable; suggestions on alternative solutions to the concerns are appreciated.

5. Letters are limited to 400 words or less.

6. All letters must bear a signature and LCA section and lot numbers.

7. The Editor, General Manager, and LCA BOD reserve the right to review to accept or deny publication of any Letter to the Editor and to offer a rebuttal within the same issue.

8. The Editor will provide an explanation in writing to those submitters whose letter is not published.

The cold November weather has me already looking to ski season. Please use caution when skiing, tubing or boarding, be aware of your surroundings at all times. Be patient with other riders who may not be at your skill level, but most of all enjoy the ski hill.

A couple of years ago a tragedy occurred in Sabula, Iowa on Sabula Lake; it is located about 20 miles west of Lake Carroll. Two ice fishermen fell through the ice and only one was rescued. If you are an ice fisherman please use extreme caution when heading out on the ice. Lake Carroll does not encourage use of the frozen lake and by doing so, you accept full responsibility. (Rules & Regs, Ch. I. Sec. B. ATV’s 4.j. & Sec. C. Snowmobiles 4.c.)

Just a reminder, when the snow flies at Lake Carroll, please slow down while driving.

Many times our roads will not be completely clear of snow and ice like the highways you travel outside of Lake Carroll. Our roads receive much less traffic than the highways, lack of traffic causes a longer time for our roads to clear up completely. If a significant snow storm hits Lake Carroll and you do not need to travel, please stay home to give our Maintenance Department time to clear the roads properly before venturing out. Also, give our snow plows plenty of room while clearing snow. Let’s have a safe winter driving season.

Did You Know: Snowmobiles have a speed limit in Lake Carroll of 30 miles per hour.

Snowmobiles are prohibited from crossing private lots and can only use Lake Carroll roadways to access the trail system. This information in located in the Lake Carroll rules and regulations pages 9 & 10 &11, chapter 1, section C. Winter is here it may be time to consider utilizing the low temperature light program the Security Department offers. Several homes experienced major water damage at Lake Carroll last year during the harsh winter. This program has the homeowner place a colored light in a window that can be seen from the street by Security upon rounds. The light is plugged into a low temperature switch on an inner wall of the residence. When the temperature in the house falls below a preset temperature, the light is activated and can be viewed by Security, or perhaps a neighbor. Then Security will contact you or other contacts you have provided to Security. You can find more information about this program elsewhere in this issue or contact me if you have any questions. I have seen the devastation water can do to homes here at the lake because of a broken water pipe…something to consider.

ARE YOU READY FOR WINTER? Winter has already arrived and by the time you receive the LC News, many of you will be on your way to snow bird country. As I have stated before, it is always a good idea to leave contact info with LC Security and utilizing their Residential Home Inspection and Heat Light Watch so they call you or your contact in case of any damage from the winter storms. You can read more about this program elsewhere in this issue, online, or contact the Security Dept for details. Ideally, trusting a neighbor with a key as a contact always works out best.

PHONE SCAM IN CARROLL COUNTY! By now most of you have received emails that I explained about a serious phone scam that has affected Lake Carroll and surrounding communities. I was personally involved in this phone call that the caller stated that he was from an I.T. company in Las Vegas that was monitoring illegal attempts that were made to compromise our computer. The caller asked that we go to our computer and give him a password. I hung up, but after a few calls to the Sheriff’s Department I learned that this scam was showing up in our area. As of this writing I know of two people that were scammed by these callers. In both cases the callers took control of their computers and were able to get their credit card info. The computers were hacked along with all the info.

EMAIL SPOOFING? Have you ever heard the term “E-mail Spoofing”? E-mail spoofing is the forgery of an e-mail header so that the message appears to have originated from someone or somewhere other than the actual source. Distributors of spam often use spoofing in an attempt to get recipients to open, and possibly even respond to, their solicitations. Although most spoofed e-mail falls into the “nuisance” category and requires little action other than deletion, the more malicious varieties can cause serious problems and security risks. For example, spoofed e-mail may claim to be from someone in a position of authority, asking for sensitive data, such as passwords, credit card numbers, or other personal information -- any of which can be used for a variety of criminal purposes. The Bank of America, eBay, and Wells Fargo are among the companies recently spoofed in mass spam mailings. One of our NW members and dear friend was just sent an e-mail with the logo of B.O.A. (as in Bank of America) and spelled out. The e-mail stated that there has been illegal activity on their credit card and to continue to click on a button to continue. When clicking on, it showed three pages that had to be filled out asking personal and account information. Luckily our friends were aware of scams and called the Bank of America hotline # on the back of their card. They were told by Bank of America that they and any other card issuer will never send anything through e-mail asking for personal account info.

Another popular spoofing scam is from utility companies either by e-mail, or phone calls stating they are from so and so utility company, our area would be Com-Ed and now Nicor.

The caller will state the utility user is behind in their payments and the utility will be shut off unless they receive a payment right away. Of course most of us know that utility companies do not relay any late payments requests through e-mails or phone calls. Think of it this way, these scams are also called Phishing, because it’s actually like fishing. We cast, or put a line with a hook and bait in the water and sometimes may catch a fish. That’s the criminal’s mentality. So please try and let our friends and especially the elderly about these scams.

Ok, one more scam that you should be aware of especially around the holidays.

THE NEWEST VIRUS CIRCULATING IS THE UPS/FEDEX/USPS DELIVERY FAILURE The newest virus circulating is the UPS/Fed Ex/USPS Delivery Failure. You will receive an e-mail from UPS, Fed Ex, or USPS along with a packet number. It will say that they were unable to deliver a package sent to you on such-and-such a date. It then asks you to print out the invoice copy attached with the e-mail. DON’T TRY TO PRINT THIS. IT LAUNCHES THE VIRUS! Pass this warning on to all your PC operators at work and home. This virus has caused millions of dollars in damage. FedEx DOES NOT SEND UNSOLICITED EMAILS to customers requesting information regarding packages, invoices, account numbers, passwords or personal information.

WINTER PREPAREDNESS

This column has discussed various forms of winter hazards and means of coping with them several times. But, last winter was a killer (literally) and there are many pundits issuing warnings that this coming winter will be just as difficult, if not more so. So here is another discussion of winter preparedness. Presented here are excerpts from a publication by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency. I’m only touching on a few salient points; the whole publication is too long for this column.

Cold temperatures cause us all to complain, but need to be taken seriously. 163 people have died from exposure to cold temperatures in Illinois since 1997 Winter driving conditions contribute to an average of 27,970 vehicle crashes, 4,318 injuries, and 49 fatalities in Illinois each year. (Which gives me another opportunity to ask: “Is this trip really necessary?”)

WINTER WEATHER TERMS. We hear many of these so often in weather warnings, let’s define what they actually mean. (Underscore emphasis is mine.)

• Wind Chill: Most of the time, cold is judged in terms of a thermometer reading. With people and other living things though, both temperature and wind speed are needed to produce a “Wind Chill Factor”. The wind chill is based on the rate of heat loss from exposed skin cause by the combined effects of the wind speed and cold temperatures. As the wind increases, heat is carried away from the body at an accelerated rate, driving down the body temperature. The wind chill shows how cold the wind makes exposed flesh feel and is a good way to determine the potential for frostbite or hypothermia. Remember, wind chill impacts people and other living things. If the temperature is 35 degrees and the wind chill is 10 degrees, objects such as pipes or cars will only cool to 35. The wind chill factor does not apply to non-living objects. [My engineer-based elaboration is that wind chill factor will cause a shut-down warm car, for instance, to cool down faster, but will still only bottom out at the actual air temperature. It will also cause a heated house to require more furnace heat to maintain the desired indoor temperature, but if the furnace fails the house will only lower to the actual outdoor air temperature.]

• Winter Storm Watch: Indicates severe winter weather such as heavy snow or ice is possible with the next day or two. Be prepared!

• Winter Storm Warning: Indicates heavy snow (greater than 6 inches), heavy sleet (1/2 inch or greater) or a combination of winter weather hazards are highly likely or occurring.

Stay indoors and adjust travel plans. (Is this trip really necessary?)

• Ice Storm Warning: Heavy accumulations of ice will create extremely dangerous travel conditions, damage trees and likely cause extended power outages.

• Blizzard Warning: Strong winds of 35 MPH or greater will produce blinding snow, near zero visibility, deep drifts and life-threatening conditions, especially for travelers. (Is this trip really necessary?)

• Wind Chill Warning: Life-threatening wind chills of minus 25 degrees or colder.

• Winter Weather Advisory: Indicates snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches or a combination of winter weather conditions which may cause significant inconveniences and may be hazardous, especially to travelers. Use caution of you venture out! (Is this trip really necessary?)

• Freezing Rain Advisory: Light accumulations of ice will cause hazardous travel. (Is this trip really necessary?)

Although lengthy, this is only a sampling of the information in the whole 9 page document. If you want more information from the complete publication, go to the emergency management agency website www.ready.illinois.gov. At the homepage there is a column of subject tags on the left side. Click on number 4 and you will be presented the page for winter weather information. You can recognize it by the photo of a road sign for Illinois 72 East buried in a snowbank. Then find and click on the blue link for “Winter Preparedness Guide”.

Local winter stuff. All this discussion gives me an opening to remind you once again that Lake Carroll Security does not tow stranded cars. If you are in a ditch or otherwise stuck on roads on or near Lake Carroll property, our Security force will give you transportation home or to a warm place. Towing of your car is your responsibility. Yup, here’s my last chance to rag at you about: Is this trip really necessary?

Security Residential Checks & Low Temperature Light Checks Submitted by Luke Fossett, LC Security

The Lake Carroll Security Department offers a Home Inspection that requests our officers to routinely take a visible check of your home while you are away.

Members of the Lake Carroll Security Department carry out these checks, twice a day on a daily basis. The officer on patrol will do a drive by of your home looking for anything out of the ordinary such as open doors and lights left on. The times when the officer does this will be documented on a daily log sheet; this helps our department establish a time frame in case a problem arises. When something out of the ordinary is found the officer on duty will contact you to rectify the situation.

The Lake Carroll Security Department also has a Low Temperature Light Check. The same things are looked for during this check as are during the Home Check. We also look for a low temperature light that is placed in a specific window in the home. These low temperature switches can be purchased at most home improvements stores. Locally, they may be purchased at Menards. The Security Department recommends the use of a colored bulb.

These lights work by being plugged into an outlet and the lamp is placed into a window.

When the temperature in the home falls below a certain preset temperature the light will turn on. This will let the officer know that the home has a furnace problem or is out of LP. The officer will then contact the homeowner. The Lake Carroll Security Department recommends the use of these lights in all homes that are left unattended during the winter months.

The Lake Carroll Security Officer on duty will not normally leave the vehicle while doing these checks. However the officer will leave the vehicle if anything is found out of the ordinary or the homeowner contacts the officer with something specific to check such as a door that may have been left unlocked. *All residential driveways must be cleared of ice and snow. If this is not done, we may not be able to check your home properly, or at all.

The fees for this service are as follows: 1. $5.00 a week 2. $20.00 a month 3. $120.00 a year A form must be filled out if you are interested in these programs. The form can be picked up at the Association Office, from a Lake Carroll Security Officer, or at www.golakecarroll. com (Resources> Document Library>Security Forms).

This month I thought I’d take a break from discussing the 2015 budget.

Instead, I thought I’d talk about natural gas now that Nicor has completed the natural gas main installation in the Lake Carroll community. The Association early on decided that it would convert its facilities because natural gas would cost less than LP. Earlier this year, the Clubhouse and Pool complex were converted to natural gas, and during the month of November, most of the rest of our facilities should have been converted.

The cost of the conversion will be around $55,000. About one year’s worth of natural gas savings will be enough to recover the cost of conversion.

The Association is also using its savings to repay the line of credit that was opened to fund the Advanced Deposit that Nicor required in order for them to undertake the project. This Deposit was required so that the Jeff Howe project would be economically viable for Nicor. The Association has the Board Treasurer opportunity to get this deposit back if enough property owners connect up to natural gas. So it may take a few years before the Association sees the savings from using natural gas reflected in budget and our dues.

When the Association took a closer look at its facilities, it decided that it would not make sense to convert the Campground shower house or West Marina. These two facilities only contain a large commercial grade water heater, which is only used during the warmer months. During the winter months, those building are shut down. Nicor charges a monthly fee for the gas meter, regardless of whether any natural gas gets used or not. So the savings from the small amount of natural gas that would be used just about offset the monthly Nicor charges. These two buildings may eventually be converted to natural gas, but not until it is time to replace the water heaters, since most of the conversion cost is the cost of installing a new water heater.

Property owners need to do a similar analysis to determine if it makes sense to convert their homes.

As of November 5th, 504 property owners have already made the decision to convert their homes. For those who haven’t converted, they need to look at the pros and cons. There is an upfront investment to convert appliances from LP. Some appliances can be converted relatively inexpensively, such as by replacing the orifices and modifying the regulator to operate at a different pressure. Others, such as water heaters, need to be completely replaced as there isn’t an easy conversion of them.

The upfront cost will likely eventually be offset by monthly savings. If you use a lot of natural gas, you may see a fairly quick payback, like the Association expects to see. But it may take a few years to see that payback if you don’t not use a lot of natural gas. For example, in my case, I only have a boiler and water heater that use natural gas, and I am a part-time resident that keeps the heat turned down low in the winter when we are not out at the lake. It will probably take about 2 years before my upfront investment pays off. For me, that was a reasonable return on my investment that will then pay off more in the long term, so I have converted.

Every property owner needs to determine how long their return in investment will be in their individual situation. We realize that everyone’s situation is unique. The Association has an interest in assisting every property owner to make sure they have enough information to make a decision on whether to convert or not. For full disclosure, every home that gets converted does get the Association one home closer to getting its deposit refunded from Nicor, so the Association does have a financial interest in helping property owners. The Association would like to help property owners to a win/win situation where both the property owner and the Association save money.

I’m writing this article prior to the November Board & Annual Meeting in December, I have to look back how fast this past year has been.

Hopefully this year’s budget will pass and we can look to 2015 as a year of progress and good fortune.

We should see the Grouting Project completed, less spending on other Norm Hoffman projects, and an Operations budget Board President that should finish our year not in deficit. Thanks to all of the members who supported the budget whether it passes or not. If the budget fails, we will all go back to the drawing board and come up with another plan. As I write this, I hope we do not have to do that exercise.

I would like to thank everyone who supported the Board and my Presidency this past year. We had some rough bumps along the way, but for the most part we all helped solve the problems that were thrust upon us. I believe every year we will have situations that we need to face.

The Standing Committees, Presidents Advisory Council, Committee Chairs, Staff, Board, and General Manager Mike Schmieder, I want to say thank-you for helping face the challenges and solving the issues we faced.

I want to welcome Jim Ogborn back to the Board this upcoming year, 2015 and Jeff Howe who will be serving another term. I served on the Board several years ago with Jim and I can say he will bring another dynamic to our Board. Serving on the Board takes a great deal of volunteer time and I know Jim will give an all-out effort to serve the membership. Jeff Howe, there is no doubt, probably spends more time on research than any Board member I have ever met. He is a man of detail who takes pride in serving the membership. I am fortunate to serve on a Board with our newly elected members.

Speaking of the Board, Dave Soldat’s term has ended and he will be stepping down. I first met Dave during the years coming up through committee work. We sat at tables together working on committee issues. He has been a volunteer for our Association for many years. It was a pleasure to work with Dave even though our opinions did not coincide on all issues. Dave always had a quiet approach to making his point. He did represent members concerns and made sure the Board heard that side of the story. Thanks Dave for your years of service.

As my year of Presidency ends, I want to close by saying thank-you to Mike Schmieder for having the patience to put up with me. Everyone who is President will have their own style and quirks, and being General Manager, you can have a new President of the Board every year.

Leadership styles are different and a General Manager has a responsibility to our membership and at the same time he is in constant communication with the Board of Directors. It takes a special person to head up a growing community such as ours and Mike does a fine job! I tip my hat to Mike by saying thanks!

Lake Carroll Women’s Club

Article & Photos by Pia Molloy The Lake Carroll Women’s Club held a brief meeting on Thursday, November 13th at the Plumtree Lodge. At 10:30am President Marve Feucht called the meeting to order and led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. Thirty members came to the meeting which preceded our outing to White Pines, in Mt. Morris, Illinois.

- Officer and Committee reports were shared.

- Ways and Means reported on the bake sale. Our treasury was increased by a total of $1,069.00. Thank You to all who baked and made this event a success.

Pia Molloy reminded the ladies she must have the payment of $15.00 for the Christmas Luncheon by Tuesday December 2.

Our lunch will be a Holiday Meal of hot turkey with all the trimmings and dessert.

Arrive by 11:30am to socialize and shop (items from the Senior Center and Pop“Autumn Leaves” was a one-man show corn) before the meeting, luncheon and performed by Chris Colletti with musical entertainment. numbers from the big band era.

The meeting was adjourned and the ladies gathered in our carpooling groups for the 45 minute drive to White Pines State Park.

The show “Autumn Leaves 2014” is a musical which stars Chicago native Chris Colletti. Lunch was a buffet. Chris Colletti put on a one-man show with musical numbers from the big band era. Everyone enjoyed the show.

The first meeting of the New Year, will be January 8th at 1:00pm at the Lodge. All ladies of Lake Carroll are welcome!

The LCWC travelled to White Pines State Park for their November road trip.

The ladies enjoyed a delicious buffet before settling in for the entertainment.

Audience Questions/Remarks: Sandy Sorensen – 31-91: Requested from the General Manager the number of vehicle registrations we received in 2014 compared to 2013. She is looking for the financial impact of requesting proof of registration. Mike Schmieder will get Sandy those numbers.

Sandy also reminded the Board that if Carroll Service subbed out the tile in the ski rental area that Workers Compensation insurance is required.

Tom Wienecke 1-62: State he would vote for the dues increase just wanted to know if the $16 for the pool loan would be a separate vote.

Terry Derdzinski 4-47: On the grouting project how would we know when they stopped that the dam would be fixed? The Board response was that the contractors both stated that they expect 70-80% resolution of the leakage. Also, there is an article on vegetation on the Dam and should all the trees be removed? Mike will discuss with Joe Rush.

Dan Herman – 23-53: requested a copy of the proposed rule changes. Mike will provide to Dan. Dan also stated that he felt the grouting project should be a separate vote rather than folding it into the dues.

Ian Keith – 26-52: Asked where we are with the lodge project. The Board response was that there has not been any money earmarked nor is there a timetable for the project.

Tom Miller – 3-379: He asked for clarification on the referral program if he as a property owner and a realtor would receive the referral payment for selling an Association lot. The Board answer was that he would. Tom also voiced his objection to show the unfunded projects on the budget, he would like to see any extra funds next year go to the Fixed Asset Reserve Fund.

General Manager - Monthly Board Report (BOD) November 21, 2014

Following is a synopsis of this month’s activities. I have identified those items that are of importance or that are not necessarily obvious. I have not included the normal day-to-day activities or those items that are covered by the Treasurer and others. Please also refer to the staff reports that have been provided.

The order is by department/category.

1. Report on directives from the October 24, 2014 BOD Meeting. a.

2. Administration: a. The annual mailing was printed by the Front Desk staff and mailed out on Monday, November 10, 2014. b. PTAB is currently reviewing our appeal regarding the Clubhouse and storage sheds.

PTAB has provided us with a final opportunity to provide a response and additional evidence to support our assertions. Our response was finalized at the January Board meeting and was mailed by certified mail on January 27, 2014. It has been confirmed that PTAB received our response on January 31, 2014. We have not yet received any further correspondence from PTAB. c. An updated copy of the Fixed Asset Expenditures – Cash Status report is included in the Board Packet under Treasurers Report.

3. Safe Workplace Committee & Cinci-Safe Program: a. The Safe Workplace Committee met on November 5, 2014. Minutes from the meeting will be included in the January Board packet unless the Board meets in December.

A mandatory employee meeting has been scheduled for December 11th, 2014 to inform the staff of the procedures which will be followed regarding the Drug & Alcohol policy.

4. Accounts Receivable & Front Desk: (see attachments) a. See updated 2014 dues status report which is attached. Thru October 31, 2014, we are 22 DPE’s behind where we were on the same date one year ago. b. As of November 12, 2014, 505 Natural Gas Permit Fees have been recorded totaling $126,000. A Resolution has been placed on the agenda, under New Business regarding these funds. c. Thirteen Ownership transfer transaction were processed between October 15, 2014 and November 17, 2014. Eight of these transactions were for homes.

5. Finance & Human Resources: a. Finance: i. Operating Statements for October, 2014 will be completed and sent to the Board electronically prior to the October Board Meeting. b. Human Resource: i. No Specific Report 6. Safety & Security: a. Luke attended a two day continuing education EMS conference in Dubuque on

7. Information Technology: a. As of this date (11/17), Deb has contacted American Legal Publishers regarding the codification project. It has been agreed that ALP will scrap the 2013-2014 draft documents and start up again with the 2015 documents when they become available.

This is primarily due to a miscommunication between ALP and ourselves regarding the scope of the project and editing issues that should have been discussed prior to their processing the documents. ALP has submitted to the Codification Team, a sample outline and sample content structure for evaluation. The additional cost has been confirmed and is $750.00. This matter appears on the agenda for approval under Unfinished Business. b. Membership Software System Replacement Project: Our team has been working on this project since BOD approval in April. As of this date, we have terminated our contract with the vendor of choice due to the lack of functionality due to data conversion issues and lack of communication once this issue was brought to the attention of our vendor. We feel this is unfortunate but necessary and have begun to reevaluate the “runner up” vendor and others to get this project back on track. The president of Weblink International and I talked this past Thursday and the President agreed to refund the total amount of $16,000 which had been paid in advance.

A new Software product has been selected and is included in this month’s agenda, under New Business for Board approval.

8. Communications: a. No specific report 9. Facilities Management: a. The conversion to natural gas for the Hatchery, Maintenance building, Golf Maintenance building, Ski Hill Maintenance building and the LCA Office are underway. Bomar will is scheduled to complete the conversions and Nicor has flagged the meter locations. We anticipate having natural gas for these buildings no later than December 10, 2014. b. A new hydraulic motor was put in the dredge on October 20th, but we still had a pressure problem. We called Bryan’s repair in Shannon to come out and look at the dredge. Due to a busy schedule with harvesting Bryan did not make it out to look at the dredge until November 5th. It was determined that the pump would need to be rebuilt. We received the rebuilt pump on November 14th – we are planning to put the pump in today and hopefully be back out dredging later this week. c. The Campground and West Marina shower houses were closed for the season

and winterized on October 31, 2014. d. Our snow plows and salt spreaders have been prepared for use and just in time. We plowed roads for the first time this season on Sunday, November 16th. e. The Sterling Fence Company began the Spillway Fence project on Friday, November 17, 2014. The project should be completed by Wednesday, November 19, 2014.

10. Lake Management/Wildlife: a. The lake level as of October 15, 2014 was 738’, 2’ below pool elevation. b. We continue to monitor the blue green algae in the coves. One last set of samples were submitted for testing on October 29, 2014. No toxins were detectable in the samples. c. We mechanically dredged our second cove the week of October 27th – this was done using our mini excavator, barge and push boat. We worked out a few kinks, but overall it was a success and we have a few more coves we hope to dig out this fall before the snow flies. d. A new hydraulic motor was put in the dredge on October 20th, but we still had pressure problems. We called Bryan’s repair in Shannon to come out and look at the dredge. Due to a busy schedule with harvesting equipment, Bryan did not make it out to look at the dredge until November 5th. It was determined that the pump would need to be rebuilt. We received the rebuilt pump on November 14th and we are planning to put the pump in today and hopefully be back out dredging next week. e. Luke Fossett and I were contacted by a potential Property Owner who asked if we would allow an Amphicar on our Lake.

An Amphicar is a vehicle which considered a street legal vehicle as well as a licensed watercraft. The potential Property Owner has inherited the vehicle and is having the 1967 Amphicar completely restored. The Lake Committee initially expressed numerous concerns and with very little information regarding the vehicle, voted to disallow the request at their October meeting.

I had asked the Lake Committee to revisit the request at their November Committee meeting with additional information on the vehicle being provided, as well as having an Amphicar representative available to answer any questions or concerns by the Committee. After revisiting the issue, with additional information, the Committee voted to approve the Amphicar for use at Lake Carroll. The Lake Committee has asked that the vehicle be inspected by Joe Rush and Luke Fossett prior to its initial use. f. The spillway was lowered as part of our Dam inspection. Numerous volunteers from the Fishing Club and Lake Committee volunteered their time to assist in the removal of the dozens of live fish which became trapped. The good ones were relocated back into the lake and approximately 1,200 pounds of delicious carp were do-

nated. The Dam Inspection report has been received and a copy will be made available to the Board at Friday’s meeting. g.We received a request from another grouting company to provide a drilling plan and budget for our 2015 grouting program.

Their representative came he re and we provided them with historical data and a tour of the dam. They have supplied us with a proposal (2 days ago) and we are reviewing and trying to draw conclusions and comparisons with the previous bid. h.As I usually do, I have attached Joe Rush’s entire Manager Report so you may get his perspective on issues pertaining the lake and dam.

11. Building Inspection/Architectural & Environmental: a. No specific report.

12. Golf Operations (Pro Shop): a. The golf course closed for the season on Friday, November 14th due to January like weather we’re having.

13. Golf Maintenance: a. No specific report 14. Clubhouse Operations: a. Troy Tucker was hired and has assumed the position of Chef. Troy’s first day was Thursday, November 13, 2014. b. Plans for the 2014 New Year’s Eve Celebration have been finalized. See attached flyer.

15. Recreation Complex Operations: a. Aquatic Complex: i. The indoor pool continues to run smoothly with no maintenance issues to report. b. Recreation: i. The Fitness Room was used 65 times between October 15 and November 15, 2014. ii. The Nature Walk took place on Saturday October 18th with 6 people, 18 were originally registered. The 6 that attended had a great time feeding the horses at the equestrian area and walking on the trails.

Kids enjoyed the nature scavenger hunt and had fun collecting nature items. iii. Zumba continues twice a week, Low Impact class continues once a week, and the “live yoga” has finished. Yoga by video will begin on 11/18 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-5pm. c. Ski Hill: i. Work continued on the electrical boxes on the ski hill. Our electrician is going through each box to make sure they are safe for the season and making any improvements that he sees necessary. ii. The ski hill crew is working on the Tbar lift while the weather cooperates. They are changing out sheave liners and bearings while also checking the cable.

I’m writing this month’s IMAGine article on the eve of a Polar Vortex heading our way from off the Alaskan coast, swiping through the Dakota’s, heading toward Minnesota and on down to our neck of the woods. Parts of that region are expecting up to a foot or more of snow by the time it moves on down. I don’t know about you, but I’m not ready to shovel snow yet!

However, as you can see from these photos, I have our snow shovel ready for the coming white stuff. But what on earth is that green stuff with dry leaves and sticks intertwined on the shovel in the other photo?

If you guessed it is a pile of small, chopped up by a roadside mower, and left to the elements pieces of landscape netting, you are absolutely correct! And since the plastic or polypropylene netting doesn’t deteriorate quickly or if ever, if you don’t rid your lawns, open lots or right-of-ways along the roads now before it snows, it will still be there in the spring!

But first, let me explain. I’ve been irritated on my morning walks seeing the remnants of this netting along our roadway for several weeks now. So I decided one day to take a walk with our daughter along to help pick up the debris. I brought along a white, tall kitchen trash bag and we walked from our driveway to the first road on the left, or only 0.21 miles.

I held the bag open while our daughter picked up the pieces that were loose and deposited them in the bag. She left very large amounts of netting that were still imbedded in the grass. The pieces she left alone were still several feet long and wide. We walked past five improved lots and four unimproved lots, and only picked up the debris on one side of Broadview Drive. The first photo shows the filled white bag on the shovel. The second photo has the bag removed for you to see the remnants she picked up while on that short walk.

Now folks, we have 60 miles of natural gas main lines recently installed, and that’s a great thing for all of us. But I cannot fathom how much plastic or polypropylene landscape netting was used to patch the areas of installation! I hope you agree, that’s not a great thing! Read on to find out why.

For starters, according to http://nativeplantwildlifegarden.com/dangers-of-plastic-erosioncontrol-netting-to-wildlife/, the netting can become a ‘death noose’ for the lowest of the low creatures like snakes and worms. I don’t know about snakes, but earthworms keep your soil aerated with all their tunneling and wiggling, and their castings have all kinds of nutrients that help your plants grow. A soil without earthworms quickly becomes hard. In addition, it

has been reported that turtles, chipmunks, and other small rodents are particularly vulnerable to these net mats. And after the mat does its job and grass grows up through it, the netting remains hazardous for years.

Thousands of birds are injured or killed each year as the result of becoming tangled in a variety of man-made materials. If birds become entangled they are essentially trapped and cannot free themselves without assistance. They are prevented from flying, walking, feeding and avoiding predators. Prolonged entanglement can cause permanent physical damage to skin, feathers, muscles, nerves or bones (http://www.birdmonitors.net/Entanglement.php).

Another issue is with weeds and grass that grow through the netting and get entangled.

If you have attempted to pull out the netting once you see growth (as recommended by association management in a recent LC Newspaper), you have experienced how it tears the tops off whatever growth has occurred. And unless you get the entire piece of netting out, remnants remain and may get entangled in your lawnmower. Worse yet, what about the pieces that blow around once mowers chew them into smaller pieces. I’m guessing many pieces will find their way into the lake and possibly into the propeller of your boat. It may be good fish structure, but could be disastrous if swimmers got entangled! It’s much stronger than fishing line to break.

It’s unfortunately too late now to undo what has been done already. However, there are two things we all can do if we see the netting either loose or still embedded. That is to pick it up or pull it out and dispose of it. And, if there’s a landscaping job in your future, ask about using mats made from biodegradable jute. It is clearly a better choice for wildlife.

In accordance with the Agreement of New Installation of Gas Facilities, it is the responsibility of the customer to pay for premium charges and incremental activities required to perform gas service installation during the winter construction season, which begins November 15th and ends March 15th. Lydia Coatney, of Lanark, won the girls 1213 year old division in the Punt, Pass and Kick Team Championships. The competition took place in Lake Forest, IL in the Walter Payton Training Center at Halas Hall. Lydia’s total score of 254, a personal best, was enough to win her division and give her an opportunity to qualify to represent the Chicago Bears at the National Finals in January. Included in the weekend festivities, each participant was able to have their name announced and throw an honorary pass before the Chicago Bears/ Tampa Bay Buccaneers game on Sunday.

Lydia qualified for the Team Championship by winning the local competition in Rock Falls and the sectional event in Roscoe.

Each of the 32 teams in the National Football League hosts a Team Championship. The top four participants among the 32 winners in each division are invited to the National Championship competition to be held at a playoff location. The final qualifiers will be announced in December after all of the Team Championships have been completed. Lydia is the daughter of Rhett and Keller Coatney (16-124).

Facilities Update

A couple things that I would like to remind everyone as we start thinking about the winter… Snow accumulation and blowing has already begun and will most likely continue. Our plow trucks have already made their first rounds of the property with the first accumulation of snow received November 15th.

These are safety vehicles, so please do not follow behind a plow too closely and please do not pass a plow. Although the trucks are equipped with mirrors, it is still difficult for the drivers to see when you are following too close. The crew is doing their best to Shaun Nordlie be as efficient as possible on the roads, if they have to worry too Facilities Director about a car behind them, it takes their attention and time away from their plowing responsibilities. Also, when you are behind a plow, do not pass them. Our drivers are focused on their plow, the edge of the road, and where the snow is being pushed, in addition to checking on their general surroundings.

They may not see you come up beside them to pass. The drivers should not have to worry about having to move over to allow you enough room to pass. I appreciate your cooperation with these issues. I hope that with the planning we are already doing, this year’s plowing will be as smooth as possible for both the snow plow drivers and the members.

One other note about plowing, if you have a medical appointment or urgent reason to have to get out on a morning that we are plowing, please call Missy or Karen at the Front Desk (815-493-2552, 0) to alert them or call my cell phone (815-275-6121) to make us aware of your situation. We will make every effort to accommodate you so you can get out and make your appointments. However, as Dan Herman likes to put it, “Is this trip really necessary?”

I also would like to discuss mailboxes this year. Predictions have been anywhere from a milder and a less snowy winter to colder and more snow than last year. The crew does their best to steer snow away from driveways and mailboxes, but when we get as much snow as we did last year and it continues to pile up on the sides of the roads, sometimes mailboxes are taken out. If you do not use your mailbox in the winter I would suggest taking it out during the snowy months.

In other news, the Ski Hill guys have been busy doing their preparation work for opening the Plumtree Recreation Area. This year they have been replacing sheave liners and bearings on the T-bar lift, as well as getting cables ready. We have also been doing a lot of electrical work on the pedestals of the ski and tube hills. We are looking forward to another successful and fun season of tubing and skiing, like we did last season.

Fish Tales

Seventy-two members gathered at the Lodge for our November Fishing Club meeting and potluck. The food was excellent as always. As a reminder there will not be a potluck in December and the next one will be January 14, 2015. A special welcome to Joann & Gary Gariff to our Lake Carroll community and also guests Rita O’Donnell and Mitch Tylutki.

The meeting was called to order by President Bill Comstock and Steve Hevrin led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Treasurer’s Report Mitch Feucht presented the October, 2014 financial report. A motion to accept the report was made by John Schnarr, seconded by Fred Reddies. The report was unanimously approved by the membership.

Hatchery Operations The spillway rescue basin which is below the dam was emptied of fish during October and many, many fish have been returned to the lake. Thanks to everyone who gave of their time to assist in this project.

Fred Reddies reported that the Hatchery pond was drained the week of November 3rd with the culmination on Saturday, November 8th and the results were short of expectations. There are an extremely high number of weeds in the pond compared to previous years and it is felt that this could be a cause. Tentative plans are being developed. We did have our traditional Friday night bonfire, along with plenty of food. A great time was had by all. We are looking forward to beginning the walleye production in the spring of 2015.

Board Election A special welcome to Roman Cirignani who has been elected to fill a void on the Lake Carroll Fishing Board.

Structure Projects Christmas trees will be collected to put into lake, as we have done in past years.

You can leave them at the rear of the Hatchery building. If you need someone to pick up your tree, please contact a Fishing Club board member and we will make arrangements to do so.

Tom Stangl stated that everything went very well on the 3rd reef that has been put in. Markers will be put in the lake to show the location of the new reefs and we hope to add two to three more reefs in the West Marina area in 2015. Be sure to check the newspaper for the article by Mitch for more details on the 3rd reef installation.

Other Events Mike Siciliano announced that the annual snow golf during the winter will be held and the date will be determined pending snowfall. If you have not participated, be sure to keep it in mind for a really great time. He is also working on a movie night to be held during the winter at the Lodge which will consist of a great movie, popcorn, and fellowship.

Just a reminder, the Fishing Club will be coordinating the Angel Tree Program to benefit families in our local communities again this year. The tree will be located at the Lake Carroll Clubhouse. Each Angel on the tree will have the name of a child for whom you can purchase a gift. If you have not taken an Angel and purchased a gift, you still have time to brighten Christmas for a less fortunate child.

Attention Snowmobilers:

For those of you who may be new to Lake Carroll you have to belong to a snowmobile alliance to register your sled or sleds with the Association to receive your Lake Carroll decal. The local snowmobile club is the SnoPearls, located in Pearl City. They meet the 1st Wednesday of every month from September thru March. Membership is $25.00 per family or single. We meet at Route 73 Brew & Chew (formerly Yellow Creek) at 7:30pm.

Why join the club? Besides being a requirement by Lake Carroll…first and foremost, the trails outside of Lake Carroll are on private lands. We must get permission each year to “Mark” and “Remove” all trail markers. The snowmobile clubs provide the proper insurance to cover the use of these designated trails on private land. These trails are marked by club members. Once on these trails you could travel to Wisconsin and up to the UP. Some of your membership money helps pay for the insurance that the club needs for the land owners.

Each club is marking their designated trails. With the help of the Lena Trailblazers, our trails will be marked again this year.

This year we are having our club charity ride on January 24, 2015. And new this year a snowmobile rodeo on February 4, 2015. Contact the club for more info.

November 7th & 8th club members had the Brat stand at Cub foods in Freeport for a fundraiser. It was a good time by all.

A small but hardy group of trail lovers ran the Pack the Pantry Ride on November 8. It was cold, but sunny and the riders enjoyed the day. We collected a nice sized car load of food for the Lanark-Shannon Food Pantry and pantry managers Bob and Gayla Colbert appreciated our annual gesture. In your busy holiday season, please remember the needs of this locally run and locally benefitting operation. They need all sorts of non-perishable food items and even such things as paper products (towels, bath tissue, facial tissue, etc.) and personal toiletries like soaps, lotions and deodorants. This year they have a special need for canned soups. Of course, cash is always useful for Bob and Gayla to purchase items in short supply.

The pantry is open for distribution the first and third Tuesday of each month, but you can drop off donations any time by contacting Bob at 815-821-4941 or Gayla at 815-821-4951.

Enhance your holiday celebrations by knowing you’ve helped folks less fortunate through the pantry.

We’ve had a good season on the trail. Our events were fun-filled and well attended. The Win Your Dues Raffle produced additional funding for the swinging bridge project and we have three delighted member couples who received prizes from the raffle. Presentation photos are included elsewhere in this issue. We’ll be back next season with our favorite events and a new edition of the Dues Raffle.

Last-minute Christmas shoppers need not despair—Twice-Sold Tales has your back! We have several options to take care of your needs.

Our BOGO event, running from December 9th to 24th, offers customers the chance to buy one book and get a second one of equal or lesser value for 50% off. This applies to the entire store, including recent publications (© 2013 & 2014), gift books, Christmas adult and children’s books, hardcovers, and book sets.

Is there a book lover on your list, but you have no clue what they want or already own? Twice-Sold Tales offers Gift Certificates, which will make you look very clever because your recipient gets several books rather than just one, and they get exactly what they want. Best of all, they don’t expire. Genius!

To top it off, during December, the FLPL will again provide a wrapping center for customers who purchase books.

Don’t forget to take advantage of the special services available to customers. The bookstore accepts requests, contacting customers via email or phone. While success is dependent upon what is donated, over a hundred requests have been filled. Also, an average of 100 new selections are added weekly, so repeat visitors will always find something new. Finally, donations of gently used books are accepted, sending them to a new home, freeing up room on your shelves, and supporting the Lanark Public Library.

As of November 15, Twice-Sold Tales has brought in $4,158 in sales this year, all of which is used to support the Lanark Public Library, its collections, and its programs. We are hoping to make it $5,000 by the year’s end, with your help. Please stop in yourself, and bring your family and friends to the store when they visit. Mention the bookstore to others at holiday gatherings. Many little gems have been found on the shelves, and visitors are always amazed at the large numbers and wide range of books available in the bookstore.

Twice-Sold Tales, the gently used bookstore, is run by the Friends of the Lanark Public Library; proceeds benefit the Lanark Public Library and its programs and collections. The Lake Carroll Security Department offers a Home Inspection that requests our officers to routinely take a visible check of your home while you are away.

Members of the Lake Carroll Security Department carry out these checks, twice a day on a daily basis. The officer on patrol will do a drive by of your home looking for anything out of the ordinary such as open doors and lights left on. The times when the officer does this will be documented on a daily log sheet; this helps our department establish a time frame in case a problem arises. When something out of the ordinary is found the officer on duty will contact you to rectify the situation.

The Lake Carroll Security Department also has a Low Temperature Light Check. The same things are looked for during this check as are during the Home Check. We also look for a low temperature light that is placed in a specific window in the home. These low temperature switches can be purchased at most home improvements stores. Locally, they may be purchased at Menards. The Security Department recommends the use of a colored bulb.

These lights work by being plugged into an outlet and the lamp is placed into a window.

When the temperature in the home falls below a certain preset temperature the light will turn on. This will let the officer know that the home has a furnace problem or is out of LP. The officer will then contact the homeowner. The Lake Carroll Security Department recommends the use of these lights in all homes that are left unattended during the winter months.

The Lake Carroll Security Officer on duty will not normally leave the vehicle while doing these checks. However the officer will leave the vehicle if anything is found out of the ordinary or the homeowner contacts the officer with something specific to check such as a door that may have been left unlocked. *All residential driveways must be cleared of ice and snow. If this is not done, we may not be able to check your home properly, or at all.

The fees for this service are as follows: 1. $5.00 a week 2. $20.00 a month 3. $120.00 a year A form must be filled out if you are interested in these programs. The form can be picked up at the Association Office, from a Lake Carroll Security Officer, or at www.golakecarroll. com (Resources> Document Library>Security Forms).

Master Gardener Training Offered

The University of Illinois Extension is accepting applications to participate in the 2015 Master Gardener Training Program. Those interested need to complete an application form and return it to their local county extension office. Master Gardeners are individuals with an interest in horticulture willing to participate in 60 hours of classes taught by University of Illinois Educators. Then they agree to volunteer 60 hours of time through their local office to teach others about gardening.

Local webinar and hands on training classes will be held at the Morrison and Amboy Extension Offices starting January 27th, 2015. Classes will be 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. every Friday through March 31. Class topics include botany, soils and fertilizer, trees and shrubs, vegetables, fruits, insects, turf grass management, disease control, pesticide safety and others. The cost of the manual and training will be $175.

Children’s Id Photos To Be Updated For 2015

With our current Membership ID cards having been issued in 2007, it is time to update children’s photos. A then five-year old is now 12 and a ten-year old is now 17…you get the picture. Most kids in our database no longer look anything like the photo on their ID card.

Admin Staff is working on updating primary LCA Member’s dependent children 18 years and younger. We need a clear head and shoulders picture with a plain background. No hats, sunglasses, or funny poses/facial expressions. Photos from other ID’s with holograms are not accepted. The preferred method to receive new photos is via email to photoid@golakecarroll.com. If you don’t have this option, the office staff is available to take your photo Monday through Saturday between the hours of 9 AM & 3PM. If you are a new member in 2014 and/or have updated your children’s ID photos within 2014, please contact the office so we can remove you from our list. If all goes as planned, ID cards of LCA Member’s dependent children 18 years and younger may be deactivated as of April 1, 2015 if new photos have not been received.
