With the announcement in the February Lake Carroll News of the ending of the printed monthly publication and conversion to digital, we had very little direct communication from the LCA membership with the GM or newspaper editor expressing concern over the change. There were numerous members who made passing comments to the front desk staff confirming what they had heard and a few phone calls with the Owner Liaison, but nothing more. Only two of our routine submitters had questions on the new format but didn’t express opposition with the upcoming change.

We know many of you commented on the Lake Carroll Google Email Group and Lake Carroll Owners Facebook page your thoughts regarding the newspaper. These two venues are not managed or supported by Lake Carroll Association. In addition, the Facebook group is not only for Lake Carroll members as it allows “members, friends, and family;” therefore, comments and polls allowing non-member input are not a true representation of our members.

Lake Carroll has a social media policy that all personnel must adhere to. LCA Staff cannot interact on social media pages that LCA does not manage. Expressing your opinions on these non-LCA social media venues does not induce action by the Association.

The March edition of the Lake Carroll News is the last publication of our printed monthly newspaper. Our goal is to deliver information to LCA members in a timelier manner in a digital format. One of the most frequent complaints is how late members who do not live locally receive our newspaper; sometimes up to three and four weeks after the publication date. While we have our newspaper posted online, many find the online viewer not user-friendly. These and other factors brought us to our decision to go digital.

We will produce a digital format that will allow for you to print off the entire publication or a single page; whatever you need.

We will also have a reduced number of copies at the Association Office.

We encourage all LCA Members to keep their contact information up to date. Keeping your email current will be vital in getting notices, announcements, and informative articles to you without interruption. You can still expect to find your favorite staff and club reports, as well as upcoming events. As always, we will have the content that has been provided in our monthly newspaper on our website. The link will be found on our homepage – www.golakecarroll.com, as well as access will be provided in our weekly emails.

If you do not currently receive our weekly email(s), please send an email to info@golakecarroll.com so we can update your account.

Now to what you can expect in your mailbox.

We have worked with Sauk Valley Media (SVM) since 2013 to publish our monthly newspaper. With the ending of our contract with SVM, we are pleased to announce they have decided to create a new publication for LC members that will be published by Shaw Media. It will be called the Lake LifeStyle and will be a magazine format that will include interviews, stories, recommendations for things to do in the area including Lake Carroll events, and other topics of interest to LCA members. It’s intended to be a positive representation of what our “lake life” has to offer our members, as well as potential members. This publication will begin in April 2020.

If you are interested in giving an interview, want to share a photo, or have a special interest story idea, you can contact Mike Ford of SVM directly at 815-632-2559 or mford@saukvalley.com.

Social Media

Lake Carroll also has plans for starting a members-only Facebook group. This will allow the interaction between the community and staff that our public-facing FB page doesn’t allow. Watch for your invitation to join.

Front Desk News 2020 Dues 2020 dues were due January 31, 2020. All unpaid dues will be assessed $100 late fee and be subject to the 2020 Collection Policy set forth by the Board of Directors.

Decals The front desk is sending out decals as fast as dues and information sheets are arriving at the office. Please be patient with the turn around. Once you receive your 2020 decals, please make sure to update all your vehicles with the new decal.

Decals will not be processed until dues are paid in-full and your information sheet with updated information is received.

Guest Parking Passes Temporary 2020 guest parking passes are available at the front desk. Valid for 7 days, available to all members in good standings and their guests for free. Members are responsible for any guests they may host on Lake Carroll property.

If you have the need for a regular pass, please supply Year, Make, Model, Plate of your guest and purchase your pass at the front desk for $33. This pass will allow 24/7 access to Lake Carroll.

Lottery Marina Slip and Campground Lotteries will not be in-person this year.

Boat Safety Boat Safety class will be Saturday, April 4th. Online registration opens March 1, 2020. $5 fee per registrant.

Letters must be received at the Association office by the 18th of each month unless otherwise specified due to altered deadlines and adhere to the following guidelines: 1. Writers must be LCA members in good standing, reflect their viewpoint, focus on the issues and/or must be of interest to the majority of Lake Carroll members.

2. Letters should not contain personal attacks against any individual(s) or businesses and may not express personal grievances or conflicts.

3. Letters containing libelous material or statements, derogatory remarks or obscenities will not be published or are subject to editing after consultation between submitter and editor.

4. Constructive criticism is acceptable; suggestions on alternative solutions to the concerns are appreciated.

5. Letters are limited to 400 words or less.

6. All letters must bear a signature and LCA section and lot numbers.

7. The Editor, General Manager, and LCA BOD reserve the right to review to accept or deny publication of any Letter to the Editor and to offer a rebuttal within the same issue.

COMMON SAFETY HAZARDS AROUND THE HOME AND HOW TO PREVENT THEM - Make sure all staircases have solid handrails, securely fixed flooring, adequate lighting, and safety gates if there are small children in your home

Luke Fossett Security Supervisor I hope you and your family are having a safe winter season.

I would like to thank the Lake Carroll Safety Committee and the committee chair, Mike Siciliano, for their continuing support and knowledge during the last year.

The Security Department is fortunate to have such a good working relationship and support of the Safety Committee.

It is that time of year again to display your 2020 vehicle, boat, ATV, golf cart and camper LCA decals. Please display your decals as soon as you receive them from the LCA office.

I would like to encourage everyone that has not picked up a 2020 copy of the rules and regulations to please do so. They are available, no charge, at the LCA office, they are also available online at golakecarroll.com under About, then Governance. A couple minutes reviewing the rules and regulations can make everyone’s experience more enjoyable at Lake Carroll, not knowing a rule is not an excuse to violate one.

All UTV and ATV operators including guests must successfully take the UTV / ATV safety quiz. A certificate will be awarded when the quiz is completed. A copy of the certificate must be carried with the operator or a photo of the quiz may be saved to a smart phone and will be requested by Security during safety checks.

When operating a watercraft on Lake Carroll at least one person on the boat must have successfully completed the Lake Carroll Boater Safety quiz. Guests must also take the quiz if they are boating solo or riding a Jet Ski solo. A copy of the certificate must be carried with the operator or a photo of the quiz may be saved to a smart phone and will be requested by security during safety checks. All other registration requirements remain the same.

The quizzes can be found on the Lake Carroll website. The Lake quiz is on the Lake & Natural Resources webpage and the Trail quiz, on the Trail amenity webpage. You do not have to be logged on to access the quizzes. This allows you and your guests to complete the quiz(zes) before coming to the lake and ready to use the lake and/or trail system.

If a member or guest does not have computer access, a computer will be available at the Lake Carroll Conference Center to complete the quiz.

We may be approaching the end of the winter season, but we could still have measurable snowfall. When the snow flies at Lake Carroll, please slow down while driving. Many times, our roads will not be completely clear of snow and ice like the highways you travel to get to Lake Carroll. Our roads receive much less traffic than the highways, lack of traffic causes a longer time for our roads to clear up completely.

When a significant snowstorm hits Lake Carroll and you do not need to travel stay home, give our maintenance department time to clear the roads properly before venturing out. Give our snowplows plenty of room while clearing snow, many times their vision is impaired due to the snow.

I would like to wish all the property owners and their guests a safe and enjoyable end of winter season and DON’T’ FORGET YIELD TO YELLOW!!!

DID YOU KNOW: Snowmobiles have a speed limit in Lake Carroll of 30 miles per hour. Snowmobiles are prohibited from crossing private lots and can only use Lake Carroll roadways to access the trail system. This information in located in the Lake Carroll Governing Documents: Title V: Rules and Regulations, Chapter 53.03 (B)(4) & (E)(2).

- Keep all outside stairs clear of debris and hazards like ice and snow. Add secured mats or grip tape to make surfaces less slippery - Secure rugs to avoid slipping on slick surfaces in the bathroom and shower. Install safety railings in your shower so that family members old and young safely get in and out of the shower safely.

- Provide an easy space for kids to stow toys and make sure every play date ends without injury. Secure skateboards, bikes, and other mobile toys in a safe area where family members and visitors won’t trip on them.

- Last year there were more than 365,000 fires in US homes, causing everything from mild smoke damage to total devastation, including loss of life. Even candles or an unattended iron can lead to an accidental fire. There is a lot you can do to prevent a fire from getting out of hand.

- Install fire alarms on all levels of your home and check and change the batteries at least annually. Consider investing in a smart smoke detector. Make sure you have a carbon monoxide detector as well.

- Never leave candles unattended or near cloth like drapes or blankets. Also, make sure they are out of reach of children and that pets cannot knock them over Avoid an electrical fire by making sure that all appliances are in good working order and no wires are frayed. Don’t overload your electrical outlets either. In fact, it’s a smart practice to unplug small appliances like toasters when not in use.

- Purchase at least one fire extinguisher for your home and check it annually to verify it is in good working order.

- Choking is the country’s fourth largest cause of accidental death claiming nearly 5,000 victims last year. From a bit of dinner going down the wrong way to a youngster accidentally swallowing a small item, choking is scary. Educate yourself about choking hazards and take measures to keep your family safe. Inspect children’s toys regularly for any loose parts. Look around your floors for small toys or items that little hands might easily pick up and put in their mouth. Be sure to keep small hard foods like nuts or candy out of reach of children. For children under the age of four always cut up hard foods that can block airways. The same applies to softer foods like grapes, cherry tomatoes, and hotdogs.

- Poisoning. There were over 2 million incidences last year reported to POISON CONTROL CENTER’s nationwide. Several household items present poison hazards, including cleaning and home maintenance supplies. However, a little diligence can decrease the chance of anyone in your family becoming a victim store your cleaning chemicals properly.

Please do everything possible to keep your home safe. For many of us, our children have grown up and left the home, but they are now returning with their kids, so keep those precious children in mind and just open up your eyes and look around your home for danger. Have a safe March!

DID YOU KNOW: It is illegal to let you dog or cat roam freely at Lake Carroll.

Please be courteous with you neighbors. Even if they are not at their Lake Carroll residence your pets should not be making a mess on their property. Please review the rules regarding pets in the Lake Carroll Governing Documents Title V. Rules and Regulations, Chapter 50.06 (H).

DID YOU KNOW: All garbage receptacles must be returned to residence within 24 hours of garbage pickup. All garbage must be placed in a proper receptacle to avoid the garbage being distributed throughout the area by local wildlife. Moring Disposal offers receptacles and residential garbage service that will return your receptacles to your property. This information is located in the Lake Carroll Governing Documents Title V. Rules and Regulations, Chapter 50.06 (F)(2).

President’s Message Dear Fellow Lake Carroll Members, Forty-nine years ago, I was riding a bus to and from high school carrying a sack of books needed to do my homework. Today, my 9-year-old grandson carries a school provided laptop instead of textbooks.

One evening while I was babysitting, I observed him doing his homework on the laptop. When he finished, with the press of a button, he sent it to his teacher. I was stunned when his teacher replied to him a few minutes later. The world of education sure has changed in the last forty-nine years.

Tom Bogusevic Lake Carroll is forty-nine years old this year. It has become the Board President community that we all love today due to the vision, hard work and dedication of many people over that period of time. However, many times at Lake Carroll I feel like we are still carrying around our sack of books. We need to continue to evolve, just like the educational community has evolved. We need to continue to simplify processes and move forward.

Last year your Board of Directors focused almost exclusively upon our immediate issue of stabilizing our financial condition. The budget that you ratified in December was the culmination of that effort. Our General Manager and his team are responsible for, and focused upon, executing that budget.

This year, your Board of Directors is looking to focus more on our future. On the cusp of Lake Carroll’s 50th Anniversary, we have tasked ourselves with the overarching goal of initiating a strategic planning process. The purpose will be to offer a guide or reference for future Board of Directors to keep Lake Carroll on the path of remaining a vibrant memberowned community, with excellent recreational and lifestyle amenities, for perhaps, another 50 years.

On Saturday, March 14th, we have planned a Board Workshop to begin our Strategic Planning Process. It will be open to all members to watch and listen. Member questions will be taken and answered at appropriate times. The Steering Committee has been invited to participate and a moderator will help guide the discussion and the process. The workshop is meant to encourage healthy discussion about topics relevant to our future as a community.

Demographic data will be presented, and many questions are going to be asked. We will begin to identify and examine risks and threats to Lake Carroll remaining a healthy and vibrant community. We also expect to examine and discuss the current operating and regulatory environment and our governance structure within that environment. We anticipate discussing our Reserve Study and funding levels for our Fixed Asset Reserve. We are going to ask, “Where will we find, and how will we attract future generations to our community?”

No topic will be off limits.

Today we feel that Lake Carroll is in a good position. Your Board recognizes, however, that the world is changing at an accelerating pace. In order for Lake Carroll to continue to offer the lifestyle and varied excellent recreational amenities, it must adapt to the changing world.

I am not going to be around in 50 years, as many of the original Lake Carroll members are not today. However, just as I am grateful for our original members’ vision, hard work and dedication, maybe my grandson will be grateful that those before him thought seriously about the future of Lake Carroll, too.

Availability Heuristic. A mental shortcut that results in a decision or judgment formed from immediate examples that come to a person’s mind.

Does availability heuristic affect Lake Carroll? In a way, yes.

Read on.

Several years back, we took our family to Phoenix for a Christmas vacation. On our first morning, we headed out to the hotel pool and 50-degree chilly sunshine. After 30 minutes, we decided to head to Sedona and the renowned red rock formations. Beautiful! But it was Stephen Mack snowing in the mountains. We still enjoyed it and took the Pink Jeep Board Treasurer Tour. Breathtaking hairpin turns!

On our way back, the 100-mile drive (less than 2 hours), I asked our kids for weather guesses back in Phoenix. Cold and likely raining. With the information they had, the guesses were good. However, the information they used for their decision was incomplete. When we arrived, the temperature was up to 65 and it was sunny.

The short trip back from a cold and snowy Sedona had them expecting similar conditions only 100 miles away.

ANOTHER EXAMPLE. Fear of Flying. It’s said 40% of travelers fear dying in a plane crash. The mental shortcut ignores actual data (less than 1 in 5 million chance) and creates those sweaty palms on takeoff.

No doubt, that 40% number jumps when turbulence hits!

LAKE CARROLL. Lake Carroll finance and operations availability heuristics are certainly not in the same category as fear of flying. Yet, change based on data vs. mental shortcuts is what our board and management hope to accomplish.

When many of us joined our board we heard countless times, the reason to continue in a certain direction is or was because “that’s the way it’s always been done.” Often, this is a type of mental shortcut.

ITEMS TO CONSIDER: Spend more or less on an amenity; If we use the amenity, our mental shortcut may be different than someone who does not. Spending more may enhance users experience. Maybe.

Yet, obtaining data to support that conclusion for the benefit of our community can help us with the decision.

Other examples with financial and user experience implications: – It’s normal to expect the longer we go without a drought, the less likely it may be. But odds tell us otherwise.

– Floods, algae blooms, security events are all future considerations for our community.

– How about spending more or less on docks, our administration, our clubhouse, ski hill, trails and the list goes on.

Did one of these catch your eye? Data accumulated and analyzed can help with our decision process in any of these areas. And, we are prioritizing and moving further in this direction.

BUDGETS. Even our method of preparing, distributing and passing budgets can be considered. Can our current method be improved for future sustainability? Our board expects to review our practice in the context of our community’s demographics and future.

Over the past year, we have focused on moving forward with data gathering in our community. Our Lake Carroll ID cards will become a major data source to help us define our usage and priorities in years to come. Lake, golf course, trail, ski hill, road usage and even member communications are all sources of data that affect our future financial well-being.

STRATEGIC PLANNING. As we consider steps to improve Lake Carroll for the long term, availability heuristics (normal mental shortcuts) will certainly impact our acceptance of change. Our objective is to include data and logic in these decisions.

Our first strategic planning meeting is scheduled for March 14. Check your Lake Carroll online calendar for details of time and place if you’d like to watch. Like my family trip from Sedona to Phoenix, the distance is not long. Yet utilizing data and logic should give us an edge to calculate where we are going.

ID CARDS: Note – if your Lake Carroll ID card currently has a photo of our guard shack, it needs to be replaced to access amenities by April, 2020. The new card has an aerial photo background of our lake.

WILDLIFE:

Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in whitetail deer has been around Lake Carroll for over a decade. In the past few years, there have been three deer tested positive for CWD within the lake boundaries. All three of these were within the golf course area of the lake. Joe Rush & the Wildlife Committee will work on an education program to help PO understand the disease & how it impacts our community. This disease once contracted by the deer is always fatal, they cannot recover from it

LCWC - Getting To Know You

The Women’s club gathered at the lodge on the 13th of February. It was very chilly outside, but attendees were warmed with the lure of better health & renewed skin!

Our meeting kicked off with a very informative presentation by Jenny Lyons of Cutting Edge Salon in Lanark.

Jenny is a stylist and cosmetologist specializing in reflexology, which is an all-natural healing process dealing with nerves and pressure points in the feet.

She explained how whole hand strokes to specific areas can achieve therapeutic effects throughout the body and even improve sleep.

Jenny also offers unique jade facials, manicures, pedicures, and other spa services.

SAVE THE DATE! Mark your calendars for Tuesday April 28th, 10 am at the lodge for our biannual Blanket Project tying event.

No sewing experience necessary. The only tools needed are a small scissors, a ruler, and a wide-eyed needle. If you don’t have the tools, don’t worry about it; we have extra.

For those who may not be familiar with this group, we purchase, prep, and sew child-themed material into small blankets. When we meet twice a year it’s to finish-tie the blankets and sew on a label. These blankets are given to local organizations to help comfort children in need, many as a result of abuse, illness, or lifetrauma.

Please come and join us. Many hands make light work!

Prairie Plant Sale

By Becky Janopoulos & Pam Richards Recently when I was online, I saw a picture of a beautiful native flower garden with a caption that read “This is a Birdfeeder”. When I first started gardening, I used many of the plants that I found at the local Menards or Home Depot. Although I still have some of these in my garden, I have changed a great portion over to plants that are native to the Midwest region.

Over the years as the garden has changed, I have noticed so much more than just the flowers. As I watch interesting insects and birds popping in and out of the plants it’s like watching a mini ecosystem.

For birds, like the bluebird, this is a wonderful habitat. Native plants not only produce seeds that our songbirds eat but also support insect life for the bird species that eat mostly insects like the bluebird! Bee species, odonata (dragon- and damselflies), and thousands of insects

love these plants also.

With this in mind, the Prairie Club is organizing a native plant sale for a fundraiser for the club. This will not only help fund more work on Lake Carroll’s prairies but also give LC members an opportunity to get native plants for their own homes at a reduced cost! This $4.00 price for three-inch potted plants beats the cost of most native nurseries. Country Roads Greenhouse is within 50 miles and has supplied Wild Ones native prairie plant sales. You must pre-order the plants you want. Plant pick-up will be at the West Marina shelter on May 16 and 23 from 9-11:00 a.m. You can see our two forms here; one is a pre-order form due April 30 and the other a colorful picture and description of plant characteristics. We know you will witness an influx of natural wonders after starting your gardens, rain gardens, and prairies. You can support the Watershed Plan with erosion control measures. Seeking Donations for Handicap Fishing Pier Attention Lake Carroll Community Members, Are you aware that the Lake Carroll Fishing Club is building a handicap accessible fishing pier at the East Marina? It has the support of the community and the approval of the Association. Targeted construction is 2020. 50% of the estimated $14,000 cost has been authorized by the Fishing Club membership. These costs include all materials, excavation and labor. Additionally, in an effort to help manage cost, the labor required for construction will be provided by volunteers. It will be through the support of all Lake Carroll members that everyone will have access to safe fishing.

The Fishing Club is excited about this opportunity and hopes this excitement will spread throughout the community. We hope you can appreciate the need for this pier and will consider making a donation. Any contribution to help attain the remaining $7,000 cost will be greatly appreciated by all who will benefit from its construction. I know the weather isn’t quite golfing weather yet, but it is around the corner. Hopefully by the end of this month we will be much closer to golfing on the links. This year we have another very busy year planned on the course, with many member events, leagues and outings. A list of events and outings will be included with this publication.

We will be putting in the new Back 9 irrigation system, which will allow for more efficient watering and less breakdowns of the system. We are looking to have the work begin mid-April and Jason Hill conclude before Memorial Day, weather permitting. We should PGA Golf Professional experience limited closures of holes and limited damaged areas throughout this process.

New to this year will be the Divot Mix Bottle Station that will be located near the cart staging area. The plan is to have full sand bottles on one side of the rack and another rack for your empty bottles to be exchanged. This will allow for private cart owners to use divot mix on the course and when finished with your round, leave the empty bottle in the rack. I ask you to please remember to bring the bottles back after every round, I will only have a limited number of bottles and would like to be able to offer this consistently throughout the year.

Registration is at the Clubhouse on Wednesday, April 1st, at 5 PM. Registration fee this year is $10.00, and there is no CDGA required handicap this year to join league.

Cross Country Skiing & Snowshoeing Trail on the Lake Carroll Golf Course We’ve had several inquiries regarding the trail our golf maintenance staff grooms around the course. It is specifically for cross country skiing and snowshoeing. This allows a place for these activities without the danger of a snowmobile coming around the corner on the regular trail system. It’s a chance to take a quiet trek around the course and enjoy whatever comes your way.

Please don’t take your snowmobiles on this trail or cut across the golf course. Motorized vehicles are not allowed on the LC Golf Course except by golf maintenance personnel. The trail is open when sufficient snow coverage is present.

STOP HITCHHIKERS!

What a gorgeous night for a membership meeting and potluck. The sky was clear, temperatures were in the mid-seventies and the pelicans could be seen diving for fish. Oh, forgive me, that’s the weather for all the snowbirds in Florida. Now back to reality. Snow, cold and your typical wintery temperatures greeted the 41 members and guests who came out for the Fishing Club’s General Meeting. Thanks everyone for not migrating to a warmer climate to attend this February’s potluck.

After the usual tasty chicken and delicious sides, the meeting began at 6:57pm with the Pledge of Allegiance. Following the Pledge, guests Kim Bertrand and Mike Amyoros were introduced to the membership.

Welcome!

Ken Sandy presented the Treasurer’s Report. The income for January was favorable and increased the club’s ending balance by $1,197.62.

Much of that increase was associated with dues and donations. Ken also reported that $3,143 has been received for construction of the handicap pier. The Treasurer’s Report was approved by a motion and second from the club membership.

With the reading of the Treasurer’s Report complete, Jeremy Allen provided an update on Fishing Club activities.

• A workday was held on January 21st to prep all materials needed for the construction of sixteen Georgia Cubes. These Georgia Cubes represent this year’s effort by the club to add structure and habitat to Lake Carroll. Everything went well that workday. Final assembly of the cubes and placing them into the lake will be done later this Spring.

• The next major event is the startup of hatchery operations for this year’s Spring Walleye Harvest. Startup is planned for the second week of March. As part of that startup operation, the club is looking at new techniques to eliminate the growth of fungus inside the hatchery. When fungus is detected as it was last year, the growth of fertilized walleye eggs and newly hatched Fry can be greatly affected.

• The club is looking for two board members to fill vacant positions.

The first was announced last month and the second is to replace Doc Hightower who unexpectedly resigned in January. Anyone interested in a position should contact any Fishing Club Board Member.

The evening’s festivities came to a close, all that remained was the Gift Card Raffle. This month’s lucky winners were Len Muscolino - $25 Casey’s Gift Card and Pam Richards - $25 Lanark Food Mart Gift Card. The meeting adjourned @ 7:19pm with a motion from Bob Froelich and a second by Jim Yenney. See everyone next month. And for those snowbirds returning to beautiful Lake Carroll, bring back a little of that southern warm weather and blue skies.

Now that I’ve got your attention, we’re not talking about people walking down the road with a thumb in the air, but rather aquatic hitchhikers: Nasty little invasive species that can cause great harm to the ecology of our lake (and in turn the finances needed to manage the lake). Some of you may ask, “What is an invasive species, and why should we be concerned about them?” An unofficial definition could be that an invasive species is a species that does not naturally occur in a specific area and whose introduction does or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health. The main way these “invasive species” get into bodies of water (lakes, rivers, wetlands), is by “hitching” rides with anglers, boaters, and other outdoor recreationists.

Joe Rush If you sit and think about your boating and recreational habits around Lake Carroll, Lake Manager you will probably realize you have done one of these in the past. For example, Bill and Jane decide to meet some friends down at the Rock River for a day of sunbathing, boating and tubing, so they pull their boat out of Lake Carroll and head to the river for the day. They launch at the river where they put their boat in is LOADED with and INVASIVE plant called Eurasian Milfoil, and when the trailer comes out of the water it’s covered in these plants. After a great day on the water with friends, they take their boat back to Lake Carroll and launch it, park their boat in the marina and take their trailer home. What they didn’t realize is that as the trailer was backed into the water, a big mat of invasive Eurasian Milfoil fell off the bunks and floated out into the lake to take root on the shoreline. Had Bill and Jane inspected their boat and trailer, and pressure washed it at a local carwash on the way home, they could have prevented this INVASIVE spread of milfoil.

Here’s another example. Johnny stops at the local bait shop and heads out to the lake for a bit of crappie fishing. Once he’s done fishing, he decides to dump his bait bucket into the lake instead of disposing of it in the trash. I know, I know, how sad is it to dump that poor minnows out in the trash so they just die. But what Johnny doesn’t know is that there could be an INVASIVE Spiny Water Flea in the water with the bait. Instead of killing a few minnows in the trash, he’s introduced a species of zooplankton that can be detrimental to the fishery by making it difficult for larval fish to eat. And if a baby fish doesn’t eat, he doesn’t become a BIG fish. Or maybe some of the ‘minnows’ in the bait bucket are actually minnows that aren’t good for the lake.

There are many examples of ways you can have “hitchhikers”, but if you sit and think you will probably be able to think of ways they could spread. Now that you’re aware and paying attention to these concerns, the question is, “What can YOU do to make sure we stop aquatic hitchhikers from entering Lake Carroll?” Outlined below are a few simple actions that you can take to help prevent them from spreading.

-INSPECT and REMOVE aquatic plants, animals, and mud from boat, motor, trailer, and equipment.

-DRAIN water from your boat, motor, bilge, livewell, and bait containers AWAY from the boat landing.

-DISPOSE of unwanted live bait, fish parts, and worms in the trash.

-SPRAY/RINSE boat and equipment with highpressure or hot water, OR -DRY everything for at least FIVE days before going to another body of water.

-NEVER release organisms from one water body into another.

The sad truth is that in the recent past, invasive species have been on the rise, and substantial funds are being spent to combat them all over the United States. For more information on aquatic invasive species and how to protect our waters, go to www.

The Fishing Club held a workday on January 21st to build lake structure. The focus for this day was to prepare the materials to build 16 Georgia Cubes. This may seem like a small task, but it required the help of many volunteers. Each volunteer worked in teams to complete various tasks. One of these tasks included cutting 192 pieces of 2” PVC pipe and 1600 feet of 4-inch drain tubing. After cutting the pipe and tubing, multiple holes were drilled into each piece of 4’ PVC. Two-inch holes were also bored into each section of drain tubing. At the same time this work was being done, the cut PVC pipe and three-way connectors were cleaned, assembled into squares and secured with PVC cement. These completed subassemblies then became the top and bottom sections of each cube. Finishing each task doesn’t sound like much was accomplished, but it was a full morning of work. And thanks to the help of volunteers, every task was completed. Thank You everyone for your support.

Preparing the cube components was only the first step before the finished structures can be completed. A second day will be needed to attach the 4’ PVC side support pipes to the bottom section of each cube. When this is completed, four cinder blocks will be placed over the PVC pipe at each corner to act as ballast. The 4” drain tubing comes next, it will also be placed over the PVC pipe in a diagonal and square direction. This tubing will provide the needed cover to attract fish. The last operation will be to attach the top section to each side support with PVC cement. With the cubes assembled, the only task that remains is to find storage space at the hatchery. This may be the hardest task of the day, sixteen cubes sized 4’ x 4’ x 4’ will require a fair amount of space.

With the space located, a third day is required to transport the cubes to the West Marina and drop them into the lake.

The cubes will be placed on the barge where two habitat areas will be created. Each area will consist of eight cubes placed end to end in a straight line. A marker buoy will be attached to the center cube to identify the lake location.

GPS coordinates will also be recorded and added to the LC Fishing Club map. This map, which contains all structure locations from previous years is available at the Association Office for $2.

What are the second and third task days to complete the cubes and transport them to the marina? Unknown! Because the Fishing Club is now getting organized for the Spring Walleye Harvest, the priority is to prepare the hatchery for this annual activity. This activity requires the help of many volunteers, hours of preparation, lots of space and a commitment from the club. Since the Walleye Harvest is the priority, assembling the cubes, storing the cubes, and dropping them into the lake will happen later this Spring, most likely sometime after the walleye harvest is complete. The building of Georgia Cubes and the Spring Walleye Harvest are important activities managed by the club. In order to stay informed on these events, the FC will send email blasts on future workdays. Both activities are a rewarding experience, consider volunteering, you don’t need to be a club member to help.

REMINDER FOR MANDATORY QUIZZES FOR

WATERCRAFT, UTV & ATV OPERATORS

Last year we introduced new requirements for mandatory quizzes. These are specific to the Lake Carroll Rules & Regulations regarding lake and trail usage.

TRAIL: All UTV and ATV operators including guests must successfully take the UTV / ATV Safety Quiz. This includes Members and Guests of Members using a registered machine. A certificate will be awarded when the quiz is completed. A copy of the certificate must be carried with the operator or a photo of the quiz may be saved to a smart phone and will be requested

by Security during safety checks.

WATERCRAFT: When operating a watercraft on Lake Carroll, at least one person on the boat must have successfully completed the UPDATED 2019 Lake Carroll Boater Safety quiz. Guests must also take the quiz if they are boating solo or riding a Jet Ski solo. A copy of the certificate must be carried with the operator or a photo of the quiz may be saved to a smart phone and will be requested by Security during safety checks. All other registration requirements remain the same. ***NOTE: If you’re an LCA Member who has previously completed the LCA Boat Safety Quiz, it will no longer be recognized. If you have not already done so, you MUST complete the current LCA Quiz for the upcoming season.*** The quizzes can be accessed by anyone on the Lake Carroll website. You will find each quiz on their respective amenity page - Lake & Natural Resources for watercraft and Trail for ATV/UTV. If you have guests coming out who you know will be using your equipment, you can have them take the quiz(zes) prior to coming so they are not in a rush to get them completed.

If a member or guest does not have computer access, a computer will be available at the Lake Carroll Conference Center to complete the quiz.

RECIPE CORNER

Greek Lemon-Egg Soup This Traditional Greek soup can be enjoyed as a side or on its own with crusty garlic bread.

INGREDIENTS: 4 cups Swanson chicken stock 1 tsp salt ¼ tsp pepper 1 cup Minute Rice Dash of sugar 2 eggs (separate white and yolks) room temperature 2 TBL lemon juice, fresh or bottled 1 lemon sliced thinly for garnish 1 cup diced cooked chicken (Optional)

DIRECTIONS:

In large saucepan bring stock to a boil. Lower heat to a simmer and add salt, pepper and rice. Cook for 6 minutes. Remove from heat.

Set aside 2 cups of stock.

Beat egg whites in a medium-size bowl until soft peaks form. Beat in egg yolks and lemon juice. Slowly whisk in the 2 cups of stock until it is fully mixed. Return the pot of soup to a low burner and whisk in the lemon-egg mixture. Cook on low for 15 minutes until it thickens slightly. Do not boil.

Serve warm with a garnish of sliced lemon and a sprinkle of parsley.

Highland Gallery announces call for entries at the 50th District High School Juried Art Exhibit

Highland Community College, announces a call for entries for the 50th Annual District High School Juried Art Exhibit. Work is due on Thursday, March 12, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the west wing of the Ferguson Fine Arts Center, Highland Community College, 2998 West Pearl City Rd., Freeport, Ill. The juried art exhibit is designed to recognize high school artists in northwest Illinois to celebrate their visual contributions to the community.

The Opening Reception and Awards presentation is on Thursday, April 2, 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Highland Gallery, with an award ceremony at 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. The exhibit remains open until April 19.

“Highland Gallery has been hosting this juried high school art exhibit for 50 years, serving as a highly successful collaboration between the college and our district high schools,” said Robert Apolloni, Gallery Director. ”This exciting, annual spring exhibit showcases the many talented high school students that choose to share their visual art accomplishments with our college and community. Art exhibitions, such as this, reflect the spirit and ideas of a given community; allowing us an opportunity to peek into the overall wellbeing of that community through the eyes of artists.”

Apolloni adds, “The dedicated art teachers from our district high schools should be commended for their ability to encourage and support the arts; especially in a time where Fine Arts are increasingly challenged to defend their existence. Indeed, this exhibit symbolizes the importance and role of the arts as a symbol for the direction of any given community.”
