NEW GENERAL MANAGER FOR LAKE CARROLL ANNOUNCED

It is with great pleasure that I’m announcing our new Lake Carroll General Manager, Richard Schwalbenberg. Dick will be starting his new role with Lake Carroll on December 3rd, 2018, After attending our Annual Membership Meeting on December 2nd, Dick will be at the office beginning his new role at LC. Dick is an experienced General Manager with over 25 years of expertise with several HOA’s Dave Pacione Board President similar to Lake Carroll. Dick has managed properties with multiple amenities including skiing, ocean/lake, food and beverage, sports and fitness clubs, and banquet facilities. Most recently Dick was serving as the GM of The Cove in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

During Dick’s career he and his family have crisscrossed the country spending most of their time on the east or west coasts, with several stops in the mid-west. Dick and his wife, Sharlene, have three grown children who live from the mountains to the sea. Their daughter is the Operations Manager of the Fairmont Hotel in Pittsburgh and recently had a baby boy, giving them their first grandchild. One son lives in Denver and is a financial analyst with Atkins Nutritionals, while the other son is a pilot flying Jayhawk 60T rescue helicopters for the US Coast Guard stationed in Clearwater Florida.

In his spare time Dick enjoys traveling, kayaking, boating and snowmobiling. Dick also enjoys creative projects including quilting, cooking and pottery.

Additionally, again it’s important to thank Mike Schmieder for all his service to our community over the years and especially for his continued focus while we were in transition and searching for a GM. All of us appreciate what Mike has meant to Lake Carroll and we wish him and his family all the best in their next endeavors.

Also, as you may recall, we initiated a GM search in late summer and enlisted the help of several LC Members via our GM Search Committee. My special thanks to this team as they documented the position requirements, contracted with a local search firm, developed our interview processes, and conducted multiple interviews.

All of this leading to the BOD interviewing the two finalists and making the final selection. This team kept me and the Board well informed along the way and I again wanted to thank the following LC Members: • Rich Pehlke - GM Search Committee Chair • John Avampato • Mike Bugaj • Dan McCollum • Gail Smolinski • Wayne Ugorek Please join me in welcoming Dick and Sharlene to Lake Carroll and we look forward to getting started with this exciting next chapter in our community.

Farewell

Dear Lake Carroll Members and Staff, whom I have gratefully served as the Association’s General Manager for the past eight years…

Thank you for the privilege of working with you and for the rewarding life that working and living in Lake Carroll has given my family and me. I gave it my all every day and did Mike Schmieder General Manager my best to serve with dignity and respect for everyone, with professionalism, hospitality and integrity and always for the good of the Lake Carroll community.

When I started as General Manager in December 2010, it was like a free-fall into the heart of the Association, warmly welcomed by members and staff and supported in every way. Grateful for the confidence placed in me, I enthusiastically addressed the issues of the time, which included: - Clubhouse restaurant losses in excess of $300,000 annually and client dissatisfaction with inconsistency in food quality and service - Troubling condition of the health of the Lake - Staffing concerns - Inadequate software and technological advances - Challenges of serving our diverse membership - Concern with lack of funding of the Fixed Asset Reserve Fund - How to best utilize skills and efforts of volunteer committees Now, as I say Farewell, I stand proudly with so many of you in recognizing many of our accomplishments, including: - Reduction in the annual Clubhouse operating cost from $300,000 to less than $200,000 after the first two years and maintaining at that level; introduction of the soup and salad bar enhancing customer satisfaction; changes in staffing, scheduling and purchasing - Performing within .5% +/- of budget each year over the last eight years - A healthy lake due to planning and budgeting for dam grouting, dredging, weed harvesting, and funding from passage of the Lake Improvement Plan (LIP) and the first federally-funded grant ever awarded to the Association.

- Building and developing our present competent, cohesive management team - Evolution of software and use of technology well underway I will always be proud of these achievements just as I will always love this community and its members. I wish you well in addressing today’s concerns, including: - Diminishing dues revenues as properties are turned over to the Association - Sluggish property resale market - Finding the balance between maintaining /enhancing amenities while holding dues increases to a minimum - Improving employee/committee communications - Implementing technological advances It has been a privilege to live in this community, to work for this organization and have the opportunity to serve with you. Thank you again and know that I appreciate the friendships, experiences and knowledge gained. And now a new era begins for the Association and for me. 2019 ASSOCIATION BILLING & INFORMATION SHEETS

The office staff is preparing for the mailing of the 2019 Annual Dues packet.

This information will be sent during the month of December in 6x9 black and white Lake Carroll envelopes. We ask you to examine all the information carefully. As in previous years, your 2019 completed & updated information sheet must be returned (with your monies) before new decals will be issued. Please include your billing statement with your payment & completed/updated information sheet. Payments must be postmarked by January 31, 2019 to avoid $100 late fees. Visa/Master/ Discover Credit Card Authorization forms are enclosed in the packet if you want to charge your dues & fees. Please check the appropriate line items. All credit card purchases at the Admin Office will be assessed a surcharge at the rate of 3.25%. If you have dues or billing questions, call Missy 815-493-2552 x114.

Please verify all your current information thoroughly. Print any changes legibly to help us update your files correctly and accurately. The photo ID Amenity cards are intended to be used for multiple years. Do not discard them, there is a $20 replacement fee. Vehicle decals will not be issued until the make/model, year, license plate & a copy of YOUR CURRENT STATE REGISTRATION CARD for each vehicle is received.

Once again, you will be required to provide proof of $500,000 liability for watercraft, off-road trail vehicles, snowmobiles, & golf carts. Lake Carroll Association must be named as an “Additional insured” on snowmobile & ATV policies. Make sure we have copies of your current insurance policies. Copies of current State registrations must be on file for all boats & snowmobiles.

Trailer and Vehicle Camp Shelters and ATVs being registered at Lake Carroll are required to show proof of ownership. Proof of ownership can be: Title, Insurance, and/or State License Plate registration. If you have registration & insurance questions, please call the front desk at 815-493-2552 ext 110 or ext 120.

2019 BOAT SAFETY CLASS

Lake Carroll has scheduled one Boat Safety Class for 2019. Saturday, April 20, 2019 is the date to mark on your calendar. This class will be held from 8am through 4:30pm at the Clubhouse (lower level). Sign-up information and more details will be in the February issue of the Lake Carroll News. A minimum of one member per lot must complete an IDNR Boat Safety course before watercraft may be registered at Lake Carroll.

2019 LAKE CARROLL HOMEOWNER PHONE DIRECTORY

Lake Carroll Homeowners that have a Lanark (493 prefix) telephone number or cell phone number which is used as the primary number at your Lake residence will be included in the annual Directory to be published in April 2019. The ‘Lake Phone Number’ on your 2019 Information Sheet will be the number published in the directory. Please review and update ALL phone numbers.

Lake Carroll Homeowners wishing to be EXCLUDED from the 2019 Directory must return the form included with the 2019 Membership mailing on or before January 31, 2019. If this form is not returned to the office by January 31st, your name and Lake Carroll phone number will appear in the new directory when it is published.

2019 MARINA SLIP ASSIGNMENT PROCEDURES

DEEDED BOAT SLIPS Bills for deeded boat slips will be mailed by December 27, 2018. These forms must be returned on or before January 22, 2019. Failure to submit the form & payment by January 22, 2019 will be considered a negative response and the slip will be made available to other members in good standing.

ASSIGNED BOAT SLIPS Members in good standing who had an assigned slip in 2018 will be sent bills

by January 31, 2019. These payments will be due on or before February 19, 2019.

Failure to submit the form and payment by February 19, 2019 will be considered a negative response and the slip will be made available to other members in good standing.

EAST MARINA SHORELINE SLIPS East Marina Shoreline slip registration information will be mailed by December 27, 2018 to the members in good standing using these docks this past season. Payment will be due on or before January 22, 2019. Failure to submit the forms for the East Marina shoreline slips (by 1/22/19) will be considered a negative response and the slips will be made available to other property owners.

NEW BOAT SLIP USERS/NON-DEEDED The 1st Saturday in March (3/2/2019) is the day for new boat slip users (non-deeded) to apply for a boat dock. Mark this date on your calendar to attend the Marina Slip Lottery. Further questions on assignments should be directed to Missy at 815-4932552, ext 114. The Marina Slip Assignment & Payment Schedule is included in the Rules & Regulation Booklet.

GOLF STORAGE & TRAIL, CAMPGROUND SEASONAL & STORAGE, & BOAT PARKING Bills for the above will be mailed approximately February 12, 2019. Payment will be due on or before 3/31/2019. Decals will not be issued until payment and current insurance information is received.

SEASONAL CAMPSITE LOTTERY The Campground Lottery will be held the 1st Saturday in March (3/2/2019). This is the date for new seasonal campers to apply for a seasonal campsite. Further questions on campground assignments should be directed to the Front Desk Staff at 815-4932552 ext 110 or 120.

2019 “REMOVABLE WINDOW CLING” GUEST PASSES Once again “Removable Window Cling” style guest (vehicle) passes will be issued in 2019. Please mark the appropriate space on the back of your information sheet if you will need these. Four passes (per lot) will be issued if they are requested. Each set of four will display identical numbers (i.e. 0051). Your section & lot number will not appear on the actual guest tag. The displayed number will be assigned to your database information (see sample). Per Lake Carroll Rules (Title V: Chapter 53.07 (A) (3)), no guest passes may be used in member vehicles.

MEMBERSHIP PHOTO ID CARDS Thanks to all of you who have submitted photos for your membership cards. Your picture on your Amenity card is MANDATORY if you wish to exercise your use of the amenities (i.e. pools, ski hill, golf course, etc). The Front Desk Staff will continue to take and accept pictures (Monday through Saturday, 9am – 3pm) and electronic photo files may be sent to photoid@golakecarroll.com throughout the year. The office staff may not be able to process your picture immediately as December & January are two of our busiest months. If you plan on using your amenity card at the ski hill or pool during the 2018-2019 winter season, please submit your photos now or visit the Association Office soon.

REMINDER: The photo ID Amenity cards are intended to be used for multiple years. Do not discard them, there is a $20 replacement fee. This fee does not apply to updating children’s photos on their ID cards when significant growth changes have occurred.

Letters must be received at the Association office by the 18th of each month unless otherwise specified due to altered deadlines and adhere to the following guidelines: 1. Writers must be LCA members in good standing, reflect their viewpoint, focus on the issues and/or must be of interest to the majority of Lake Carroll members.

2. Letters should not contain personal attacks against any individual(s) or businesses and may not express personal grievances or conflicts.

3. Letters containing libelous material or statements, derogatory remarks or obscenities will not be published or are subject to editing after consultation between submitter and editor.

4. Constructive criticism is acceptable; suggestions on alternative solutions to the concerns are appreciated.

5. Letters are limited to 400 words or less.

6. All letters must bear a signature and LCA section and lot numbers.

7. The Editor, General Manager, and LCA BOD reserve the right to review to accept or deny publication of any Letter to the Editor and to offer a rebuttal within the same issue.

8. The Editor will provide an explanation in writing to those submitters whose letter is not published.

It’s winter time…please take a moment to take a look at the Illinois Emergency Management Winter Preparedness Guide that is located at www.golakecarroll.com > News & Events > News > and click on “State of IL “Winter Weather Preparedness Guide” We’ve already received our first winter storm just after Thanksgiving. Please slow down while driving. Many times our roads will not be completely clear of snow and ice like the highways you travel to get to Lake Carroll. Our roads receive much less traffic than the highways, lack of traffic causes a longer time for our roads to clear up completely. If a significant snow storm hits Lake Carroll and you do not need to travel, please stay home to give our maintenance Department time to clear the roads properly before venturing out. Give our snow plows plenty of room while clearing snow, many times their vision is impaired do to the snow. Let’s have a safe winter driving season.

A couple of years ago a tragedy occurred in Sabula Iowa on Sabula Lake it is located about 20 miles west of Lake Carroll. Two ice fishermen fell through the ice; only one was rescued. If you are an ice fisherman, please use extreme caution when heading out on the ice.

The cold weather has me already looking to ski season. Please use caution when skiing, tubing or boarding. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Be patient with other riders who may not be at your skill level, but most of all enjoy the ski hill.

It was brought to my attention from a concerned property owner that there were some issues with the phone service at Lake Carroll. The subject was concerned because he was unable to reach Security through our landline. I want to inform everyone that 911 will work in this situation. There have been systems put in place for this type of a situation. The Security phone number (815) 493-2599 is a hard line.

It is received by a phone at the office; this phone is set up to forward that call to a cell phone that is carried by Security 24 hours a day 7 days a week. To call the Security cell phone directly, please (815) 275-6122. Lake Carroll upgraded the phone service at the Association Office. When you call the office number you may choose to push number 4 to be forwarded to Security. Please be aware that when Security receives this call, it will not show the number you are calling from. There have been a few instances where this has hindered the officer being able to update the subject that called Security.

Littering, I will say it again, LITTERING… it is very disheartening having to bring up this subject in a place as beautiful as Lake Carroll. We all know it is illegal to throw garbage or cigarette butts out of a vehicle window. I have been receiving complaints from property owners about this very thing. Please do not litter, if you see someone littering don’t turn your head, try and get a license plate number or vehicle description and call Security.

This article, I would like to start off with two attempted scams that I know of that just occurred here at Lake Carroll. The first one a friend of mine received a phone call from a familiar area code and prefix (815493-XXXX). Seeing this as a local area number he answered. A live voice asked is this (name). My friend answered yes, bad move, All this scammer needed was a recorded answer of “yes” to say you answered for any kind of an agreement. This scam call turned out to be the caller saying they were from the federal Medicare agency and they needed the new # that was now on the new Medicare cards that were issued in 2018. My friend was wise enough to avoid taking the bait and hanging up.

The second attempted scam my wife received a call from a 410 area code. It was a recorded message stating they were from Social Security and her SS# had been compromised. Then she was instructed to call a number to get the problem resolved. These two examples were scams and it was lucky both calls ended with no damage by just hanging up.. But we all know how lucrative these scams/frauds can be and they are increasing every day.

BELOW ARE SOME OF THE LATEST HOLIDAY SCAMS.

FAKE SHOPPING SITES AND APPS Thieves can stalk you in email spam, on social media or in search engine results when you type terms such as “discount toys.” Their enticing but bogus pitches lead you to sham websites that tout bargain buys but deliver cheap counterfeits or nothing at all — except malware or identity theft after getting your credit card details.

Before clicking, carefully read the website address and look for missing or extra letters of a retailer’s name and words like “deals,” “sales” or “discounts” as part of the URL. Discounts that seem too steep also may point to a scam. Beware of websites that list no phone numbers or street address — only an email address or P.O. box. And be on the alert for sites that lack a return policy or whose purchase pages start with “http” versus the more secure “https” format.

Always avoid offers that require payment by wire transfer or prepaid debit cards. Also watch out for emails from fake carriers claiming to have had a delivery problem -- a link in the email could harbor malware.

FAKE FREEBIES From iPhones to cruises, the holidays are the time for emails, text messages and social media posts that promise free merchandise. Many of them are a ploy to install malware once you click on a link for details. Others lead to online surveys designed to steal personal information for possible identity theft or to set you up as a future target for scammers. Some bogus offers for freebies require your credit card, saying it is necessary to cover shipping costs or a deposit. That often leads to unnecessary charges on your bill. Before taking the bait, check the manufacturer’s or provider’s website. If the offer isn’t touted there, assume it’s the work of thieves.

And think twice before downloading free holiday-themed entertainment, screen savers or mobile apps. Some are specifically designed to hack personal information, passwords and files from your device.

CHARITY CONS With the time for year-end tax write-offs approaching, the season of giving is ripe with bogus charities — especially for causes claiming to benefit police and firefighters, military veterans, sick or needy children, or victims of natural disasters. Ignore all email solicitations unless you previously donated to the particular cause. Watch for imitative words, such as “National” being substituted for “American” in a well-known name. Unless you dialed the call, don’t provide a credit card number over the phone. And before donating, verify an organization’s legitimacy at Charity Navigator or Give.org, or through your state’s agency that regulates charities.

GIFT CARDS To prevent con artists from ripping you off when buying a gift card, get the card from the retailer’s website or from the store issuing it. The cards sold on display racks at grocery stores and pharmacies may have been tampered with. Thieves can open the packaging, copy the numbers, scratch off the strip for the security code and replace the card. Then they can cash in the card after calling the issuer’s toll-free number to learn when it was activated and for what amount. Avoid online auction offers for gift cards.

APP TRAPS In another ruse, bogus apps available in Apple and Android app stores mimic well-known retailers and products — from Dollar Tree and Foot Locker to luxury brands such as Jimmy Choo and Christian Dior. Some contain malware that can steal personal information or trigger ransomware to hijack mobile devices until a ransom is paid, notes the New York Times. Others encourage users to enter credit card information or log in using their Facebook credentials, which can jeopardize those accounts.

Before downloading, carefully check app logos and descriptions for misspellings, missing letters (such as “Foot Locke” without the “r”) or poor English, as many fakes originate in China. Other red flags include poor or few customer reviews, newly launched apps, or links to apps from other retailers.

SURVEY SWINDLES These unexpected emails, text messages and social media posts promise a generous gift card, coupon or actual products for sharing your opinions about planned purchases or a “recent shopping experience.” But beware: Links that are supposed to lead you to a survey often hide computer malware. And “questions” about personal or financial information — including bank and credit accounts for supposed reward deposits — could be a setup for future identity theft or to get you on scammer-shared sucker lists for future come-ons.

Before clicking on any link that looks like it’s from a well-known company, hover your computer mouse over the URL. If the address doesn’t display the company’s name before the “.com,” assume that it’s a scam or possible malware — because when legitimate vendors conduct surveys, they often lead back to the company website.

When shopping this holiday season, please try to shop with a friend or family members.

Be aware of your surroundings when walking to your vehicle. Have your car remote in hand when walking to your car with only a quick touch to click on the car alarm if needed, Have a happy and safe holiday season.

Safety First

By Matt Ripplinger, Member of the LC Safety & Security Committee Please be sure and keep the following items in your car. You may even consider putting these in a box in the backseat or on the back floor, in case you slide into the snow, and cannot get out to get these out of the trunk.

Blankets are the most important thing to have. Other helpful items are hand warmers, first aid kit, extra clothes, boots, a heavy coat, a small shovel, a cell phone charger, flashlight, jumper cables, a bag of sand, and dried food. These items could save your life.

Another reminder...Lake Carroll Security does not tow stranded cars. If you are in a ditch or otherwise stuck on the roads on or near Lake Carroll property, our Security force will give you transportation home or to a warm place. Towing of your car is your responsibility.

The Lake Carroll Rules & Regulations state: 54.02 (D) (10) “Use of the frozen lake surface is not prohibited; however, the Association does not, nor will it, encourage or sanction such use. Use of the frozen lake surface is at the operator’s own risk.” With that being said…

If you choose to venture out on the ice, it is recommended that you don’t depend on the “rumor mill” for its safety status; you should test the area of ice you plan to utilize yourself. Our lake has active springs running under the ice year-around and what looks safe on the surface may be slush just inches below. So whether you decided to take your ATV or snowmobile for a lake cruise or plan to sit a while ice fishing, keep your safety your highest priority.

Keeping your home safe from the elements is another challenge in the winter, especially for those Members who do not visit their LC home for several months. Create a winter checklist specifically for your home to ensure you don’t forget to prepare your “empty nest” properly: 1. Appliances & Utilities: Unplug appliances not in use. If you empty your frig, be sure to leave the doors cracked to prevent trapped moisture from developing mold and odors.

2. Mail/Newspapers/Packages – Check with the Post Office as to the best way to forward or hold your mail depending you’re your plans. Also be sure to notify the LC Office (815-493-2552) of your temporary address so you don’t miss any important mailings.

3. Water: This is one of the most common issues at Lake Carroll. If you will be gone for any length of time, you should turn your water off at the main. You never know when a connection fitting for your ice maker, on your washing machine, or under your sink is going to give-way. Turning off the water isn’t enough; you should drain your lines so there’s no trapped water pressure is present in the event you have a freeze. Lake Carroll Security offers a “Residential Check Program”. If you’re going away for the winter, you should consider this program – see a separate article in this newspaper or contact Security at 815-493-2552.

4. Don’t make your house an easy target by posting your extended travel plans on social media.

5. Be sure your electronic/digital thermostat has a fresh battery. When the battery goes dead...so does your furnace!

The Illinois snowmobile trails opened December 1. Double check that your snowmobiles have current Lake Carroll stickers on them, and only ride on the designated snowmobile trails. Never ride on the golf course or through someone’s yard. You may ride along the side of the road to get to the nearest trail entrance from your residence. Watch out for traffic and mailboxes.

Security Residential Checks & Low Temperature Light Checks Submitted by Luke Fossett, LC Security

The Lake Carroll Security Department offers a Home Inspection that requests our officers to routinely take a visible check of your home while you are away.

Members of the Lake Carroll Security Department carry out these checks, twice a day on a daily basis. The officer on patrol will do a drive by of your home looking for anything out of the ordinary such as open doors and lights left on. The times when the officer does this will be documented on a daily log sheet; this helps our department establish a time frame in case a problem arises. When something out of the ordinary is found the officer on duty will contact you to rectify the situation.

The Lake Carroll Security Department also has a Low Temperature Light Check.

The same things are looked for during this check as are during the Home Check. We also look for a low temperature light that is placed in a specific window in the home.

These low temperature switches can be purchased at most home improvements stores.

Locally, they may be purchased at Menards. The Security Department recommends the use of a colored bulb. These lights work by being plugged into an outlet and the lamp is placed into a window. When the temperature in the home falls below a certain preset temperature the light will turn on. This will let the officer know that the home has a furnace problem or is out of LP. The officer will then contact the homeowner. The Lake Carroll Security Department recommends the use of these lights in all homes that are left unattended during the winter months.

The Lake Carroll Security Officer on duty will not normally leave the vehicle while doing these checks. However the officer will leave the vehicle if anything is found out of the ordinary or the homeowner contacts the officer with something specific to check such as a door that may have been left unlocked. *All residential driveways must be cleared of ice and snow. If this is not done, we may not be able to check your home properly, or at all.

The fees for this service are as follows: 1. $10.00 a week 2. $30.00 a month 3. $180.00 a year A form must be filled out if you are interested in these programs. The form can be picked up at the Association Office, from a Lake Carroll Security Officer, or at www. golakecarroll.com (Resources> Document Library>Security Forms).

New Payment Options Offered in 2019 Deb Stagno, Technology Director

Beginning in January, 2019, Lake Carroll Association will offer a couple new payment options.

ACH debit (Automatic Clearing House) will be available, and can be used as a recurring dues and assessment payment option. ACH is a secure payment transfer system that connects all U.S. financial institutions. The ACH network acts as the central clearing facility for all EFT (Electronic Fund Transfer) transactions that occur nationwide. ACH uses your checking account information.

Lake Carroll will also be offering a Monthly Recurring Payment Plan. This option will require you to pre-register for ACH withdrawals from your checking account and will only be used for dues and assessments due to the recurring plan.

Both payment options will require pre-registration. Recurring transactions can also be set up based on your choice of Annual, Quarterly or Monthly payment terms, if you wish. The recurring transaction will occur on the due date of every billing cycle so you don’t have to worry about late fees.

Only your dues and assessments will be allowed to be handled in a RECURRING manner.

This new opportunity is completely PCI (Payment Card Industry) compliant.

This means all of your data is held in a secure, industry compliant manner. All private account information used for these options will be ‘tokenized’ through our membership and merchant account systems, which means once the data is keyed into our BluePay Payment Gateway, LCA receives a random code which will be stored in our account on our membership system. Since this data is encrypted and stored at our Merchant Account and not locally within Lake Carroll, any breach of our network will not compromise your data. Credit Cards will be held in this same manner.

This will enable you to use these payment options for other ‘one-time’ sales, such as products from our sales from our Front Desk, registrations for storage sites, gas at the West Marina, etc. Anything processed through our front-desk will be able to use your ACH or ‘Credit Card on file’ payment options, with your approval.

As always, Lake Carroll will still accept cash and checks. These additional payment options were made available through the hard work of our Finance Committee and staff. If you have any questions or concerns regarding any of these options, please feel free to contact the Administration Office. More information will be included in your annual dues packet. Please watch for these important documents.

A&E recommends the continuation of the current policy for mowing of common areas. Motion passed by unanimous voice vote. Motion 18.09.05 - Clarence Grant moved, and Rick Jensen seconded to approve qualifications of Lake Carroll Building Inspector. Motion passed by unanimous voice vote. “Honor Flight of the Quad Cities” In October, Stan Suchocki, Veteran and 24-year LCA Member, traveled to the Quad Cities to join fellow vets in one of many “Honor Flights” that took them to significant memorial locations in and around Washington, DC. Stan’s day began early on October 25th getting ready for the 6:50 am 2-hour flight.

Their day was well planned out. While very emotional for some, it was a thrill to be able to visit these important places in our country’s history before arriving back in the Quad Cities around 10 pm.

Lake Carroll Women’s Club “Fall Into Fashion”

Winter is coming, days are getting shorter and the temperatures are dropping, but 70 women came out for an afternoon of fashions food and fun.

President Char Messmore called the meeting to order. She welcomed our guests who came to see the Generations Boutique Fashion Show, which was the program for the day. She informed the group that the Club theme is fellowship, philanthropy and fun. The Lake Carroll Women’s Club, has donated over $18,000 over the past five years to various organizations in the Carroll County area.

With the meeting underway, Char recognized the November birthdays.

The treasurer’s report and the secretary’s minutes were read and approved.

Standing committee reports were brief.

Marve Feucht reminded us that the club is still collecting box tops, aluminum Joyce Werntz from Generations Boutique of Freeport pull tabs and greeting cards. Bins are at emceed the LCWC Fall Into Fashion Show on the Clubhouse and Lodge. The Lanark/ November 8th.

Shannon Food Pantry is very grateful for our donations. Don’t forget to bring a couple of boxes of pasta and sauce to the December meeting.

There is a LCWC coffee held on Saturdays for those who cannot attend our Thursday meeting. They are held on a Saturday at the Lodge at 10:00 a.m. Watch the weekly emails blasts for upcoming dates.

With the holiday season drawing near it is time for our Christmas Luncheon. It will take place on Thursday, December 13th and will be held at the Lodge. Donna Lessman will cater the lunch; the cost is $15.00. Swank & Mercier of Freeport will be selling jewelry and accessories from 10:30 a.m. to noon for Christmas shopping.

Popcorn from The Blarney Stone in Shannon, will also be for sale. Lunch will be served at noon. With the theme of “Gift of Friendship,” we are asked to bring a small gift to exchange, $10.00 limit. The afternoon will be full of surprises and fun and music, so don’t forget to sign up With the meeting concluded, the show was on its way! Our own lovely members, Mary Grant, Marve Feucht, Donalee Yenney, and Merce Meyers modeled many beautiful outfits for the holidays and special occasions. Joyce Werntz of Generations Boutique of Freeport was the presenter. The fashions were beautiful; casual to dressy.

The Boutique carries a variety of sizes, shoes, jewelry, household accessories and much more. They are located in Downtown Freeport at 21 South Chicago St, very close to the movie theater. Remember they are there for your Christmas shopping or if you need that special outfit for an upcoming event.

Christmas cheer filled Lanark’s downtown during Jingle Fest on November 24. Santa elicited smiles from kiddies, carolers warbled familiar melodies, shoppers acquired unique gifts, visitors sampled goodies, children made Christmas ornaments at the library, Girl Scouts supported the local food pantry, and bargain hunters made the most of specials during Shop Small Saturday. There was something for everyone, and a great time was had by all! Jingle Fest is sponsored by the Transformers Team, United for Change.

Carol Martin considers her decision among the ten contenders during “A Taste of Holiday Treats.� Participants Deanna Allen, Carol Brown, Diann Cassens, Janie Dollinger, Pat James, Andrea Rausch, Katie Reifsteck, Natalie Reifsteck, Marsha Roberts and Denise Williams offered samples of their holiday treats. Over a hundred tasters voted and Diann Cassens’ Cranberry Christmas Cake was elected their favorite, with Carol Brown’s Golden Pecan Cups a close second.

General Manager - Monthly Board Report (BOD) - November 16, 2018 Michael Schmieder

Following is a synopsis of this month’s activities. I have identified those items that are of importance or that are not necessarily obvious. I have not included the normal day-to-day activities or those items that are covered by the Treasurer and others. Please also refer to the staff reports that have been provided.

The order is by department/category.

1. Report on directives from the September, 2018 BOD Meeting. a. A copy of the letter received from Porter Brothers Asphalt and Sealing is attached to this report. The letter acknowledges that due to time constraints, the Lake Carroll seal coat project is being delayed until the spring of 2019. The letter also confirms that Porter Brothers will honor the 2018 bid.

2. Administration: a. An updated copy of the 2018 Fixed Asset Expenditures – Cash Status has been included in the Board packet under “Treasurers Report”. b. An updated copy of the LIP Expenditures – Cash Status has been included in the Board packet under “Treasurers Report”. c. Our Insurance renewals were delivered on Friday, November 9, 2018. While some policies went down in cost, others increased.

Our premiums for Property, Inland Marine, Crime, General Liability, Auto, Workers Compensation and the umbrella went from $209,315 in 2018 to $220,699 in 2019. A 5% increase. We anticipated a 7% increase in the 2019 operating budget. (see attached) d. Our Employee Healthcare renewal will be presented on Thursday, November 15, 2018.

3. Safe Workplace Committee & Cinci-Safe Program: a. The Safe Workplace Committee met on Monday, September 10th and again on

October 1st. Minutes from these meetings are included in within this report.

Seven (7) resale transactions were entered in the database between 10/13/2018 and 11-8-2018. Four (4) lots with homes were sold and two (2) vacant lots were sold. d. 6. Finance & Human Resources: a. Finance: i. Preliminary Financial Statements for September, 2018 have been sent to the Board electronically prior to the meeting.

The Board will be asked to approve the September statements at the 11/16/2018 Board Meeting. ii. Preliminary Financial Statements for October, 2018 have not been completed due to the early date of the November Board Meeting. The October Statements will be sent to the Board electronically as soon as possible and will be on the December agenda for approval. iii. The Gaming Machines generated $4,759.38 in income for Lake Carroll during the month of October, 2018. The budgeted income for October was $3,200.00. Thru October, 2018 our total gaming income is $35,429.86 vs. the budgeted income of $33,300.00. iv. The finance Committee met on November 2, 2018. The Sperlonga project was discussed at length. Audit findings were also discussed. Also discussed was the Monthly payment option of ACH. There is a concern about cash flow, as the Committee members seem to think that a large amount of our members are going to choose this method. I sent Alan information and he

worked on a cash flow scenario. There is discussion about this scenario being held through an e-mail dialogue. v. Blue Pay and credit card encryption - we are in the process of installing this product and will begin testing soon. vi. As always - a shout out to Joyce for being such a fabulous support to Lisa and the Administrative Staff. b. Human Resource: i. No specific report 7. Safety & Security: a. As requested by the Board, I am including Luke’s full report.

8. Information Technology: a. Deb is currently working on numerous projects: i. Evaluate various iMIS 3rd party vendor opportunities ii. BluePay/iBlue (on-line credit card processing/ ACH opportunities,) iBlue is the API built to enable connectivity with our iMIS Membership system. iii. Higher Logic Website development 9. Communications: As usual, Donna Beyer remains busy on a daily basis working to maintain communications between the LCA, the Membership, Committee’s and the Staff.

10. Facilities Management: a. Fischer Excavating has provided the add-on costs to the redesign of the Zeir Rd project. Due to the costs being much higher, the LIP advisory committee will be discussing whether we should re-bid the project to all contractors again. The Army Corp responded to our engineers that they are currently reviewing the permit request for this project again. We will not work on re-bidding the project until we have a permit approved by the Corp. b. Fehr Graham completed the valve elevation survey for the Fawn Lake grading project and has provided an estimate for the project design, bidding docs, permitting etc.

This will be discussed by the LIP committee at the next meeting.

c. Two more watershed stakeholder meetings were held. One for the urban land owners (within the lake) and one for the rural landowners. Relationships within the watershed continue to improve, and participation has provided good feedback to the watershed plan. d. We provided a reimbursement request to the IEPA for funds currently put out on the grant. The first reimbursement was received and deposited during the week of November 5, 2018. The check was deposited into the LIP Account. e. Mid America Dredge has started to mobilize equipment for dredging the coves but the will not complete the project before winter. They will mobilize equipment back to the lake before spring road postings to complete the work. f. Pre-dredge surveys have been conducted by our 3rd party contractor and we anticipate the results shortly. g. As stated last month, the 9 greenways project is in a holding pattern currently. Due to the improvement in relationships with upstream landowners through the watershed grant, we are evaluating the opportunity to partner with landowners to improve the sediment and nutrient removal efficiency of any designs our engineer will provide. Our goal is to submit an implementation grant request to the IEPA under a USEPA 319 clean water grant request to offset our costs and allow us to do even more work with the limited funds available. h. There are more funds currently available to upstream producer landowners for streambank stabilization and riparian habitat improvements. I will be working with these landowners to help them to do this work if they desire to do it. i. LIP advisory committee has recommended two more greenway rip rap projects. One in section #16, and one in section #1.

Last month we shared the “You’ve Been Jingled” challenge. (In case you missed it, we are sharing the door hanger again in this month’s newsletter). This month we are expanding on that theme with another RAK (Random Act of Kindness) idea with The Christmas Doorstep Challenge! (Originally posted by Caroline Macrory, 12/11/15, on Facebook).

Imagine how many Christmases (or any day) could be brightened by a simple gesture.

The Rules: 1. Pick someone who has had a tough time or would simply benefit from some festive goodwill. It doesn’t have to be someone you know well.

2. Choose a gift – big or small. (Dollar General has some great, inexpensive gift ideas).

3. Write an anonymous note; some kinds words about why you were thinking of them.

4. Leave it all at their doorstep (no food please, as the critters may invade).

5. Knock on the door and leg it – make sure they don’t see you.

6. Feel happy knowing that you have spread some Christmas cheer with no expectations of anything in return.

There are many reasons and even more people that make up the Lake Carroll experience. Ann Wilcox is one of those people. Ann has been a Lake Carroll resident for 23 years with her husband, Bill (of 62 years).

Ann began taking Water Aerobics classes from Claire Holmberg in 1995 and when Claire decided to pursue Water Safety and CPR, Ann volunteered to keep the program going. 23 years later you can find Ann at the pool every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings from 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. Every season, either pool, Ann’s classes can range from 4 – 20 participants.

Donna Aleksy According to health expert Jillian Michaels, “A water aerobics Recreation Director class provides an effective workout for nearly every muscle and every joint in the body. As your body moves, the water constantly resists your movements. As a result, your muscles must work harder to push against the resistance.�

When asked why she does it? She states simply, “I LOVE IT!� Ann’s class members will agree wholeheartedly! So why not give water aerobics a try and see what you’re missing?

The Transformers Team owes thanks for Jingle Fest’s success to many people. Bakers Deanna Allen, Carol Brown, Diann Cassens, Janie Dollinger, Pat James, Andrea Rausch, Katie Reifsteck, Natalie Reifsteck, Marsha Roberts and Denise Williams provided samples of their favorites for “A Taste of Holiday Treats.” Nearly 100 tasters sampled the goodies in the Valentine building, made available to us courtesy of the Cornerstone Project. It’s December 2018, this year’s FC activity calendar is complete with the exception of the Giving Tree and the LC Christmas Party. Next month’s article will share the holiday spirit of these events in pictures and a short article. But until next month’s article is prepared, let’s take a look at the last two activities for 2018 and then stroll down memory lane to review this year’s highlights.

October 27th was a workday with two items on the agenda. The first activity was to locate 35 Bucket Structures on previously constructed reefs. After transporting the structures to the West Marina, volunteers loaded the structures on a barge where they could be safely transferred around the lake.

Once a reef was identified, multiple GPS locations were recorded for structure placement. Two structures were dropped at each GPS location. The location for placing structure was critical to improve cover for fish and to enhance the reef habitat. At the same time structure was being dropped, other volunteers were making necessary repairs to the Fawn Pond catch basin. These repairs were needed to trap walleye in the basin as water was draining from the pond. This draining operation would be the final stage in the walleye hatch process. This process began in the Spring when newly hatched Fry were placed in the pond to grow throughout the year.

Since the pond is still draining, results of this netting operation are incomplete. Data and a final walleye count should be available by late November. The club is hopeful some walleye will be recovered, but with the heavy rains this summer, many of the walleyes may have been pushed through the overflow drain. Think positive.

The second annual Pig Roast and Bonfire took place on November 10th. It was a cold evening with temperatures below freezing, however, 79 members, guests and grandchildren braved the cold to share an evening at the Hatchery. The guest of honor, a 125 lb. sow was served with some LC Clubhouse Rotisserie Chicken. Complimenting these entrees were many delicious side dishes, hot apple cider and tasty desserts. After the carving and dining were complete, a warm bonfire greeted those ready to brave the cold for more good conversation. It was a perfect fall evening for a bonfire, a hardy meal and warm apple cider with spirits. The club wishes to thank Dean Lower for donating the pig which was cooked to perfection.

With 2019 just a month away, it’s time to reminisce. This spring got off to a cold start with the annual Spring walleye harvest. 1.755M eggs were harvested. 250,000 Fry hatched from

these eggs were placed into Fawn Pond, the balance (approx. 1.15M) Fry went into Lake Carroll. In an effort to share the hatch process, 186 people attended the two Hatchery open houses to view or participate in the walleye egg harvest. At the same time Fry were being released, 10 goose nests with 55 eggs were discovered around the lake shoreline. These nests were oiled to help reduce this year’s gosling hatch. The club also donated $400 to help the Pearl City Bass Fishing Team purchase self-inflating life vests. Wearing their new vests, one team made it to the state finals.

Summer was filled with a host of activities. There was a large turnout of young anglers who participated in the Kids Annual Fishing Derby. These dedicated anglers caught 177 fish.

Casting or Bags contest also challenged their competitive spirit. Following the Kids Derby, a scramble golf outing was held in August. This golf outing tested a golfer’s skill on the course along with their knowledge of golf trivia. Mike Siciliano continued the summer fun with a baseball outing to Clinton Iowa where the Lumberkings won 5-4 in the last inning. Ending a summer of fun, Joe Rush made two presentations to the membership at the general meetings.

One presentation shared the “History of Lake Carroll” in photos, the second showed results of a fish survey conducted in 2017. Both presentations were informative and well received.

The Couples Fishing Tournament started the Fall season. A lot of nice fish were caught, but the greatest number of fish caught was the panfish. So many panfish were caught, the club is considering a fish fry for next year’s tournament. With Lake Carroll already a great place to fish, the club assembled bucket structures to improve reef habitat and provide cover for fish. These structures would be dropped into the lake at a later date. When these newly constructed structures are dropped, they might be used by the 150 Muskie, 5,000 Walleye and 4,000 Catfish released in October. But unfortunately, one fish related activity did not happen.

The Spillway Rescue had to be cancelled for safety reasons due to excess rainfall. These trapped fish will be rescued next year. This ended the Fall season with the exception of the two activities reviewed earlier in this article.

2018 has been a year filled with activities designed to provide a rewarding and fun experience for the entire family. But there’s still more which has not been mentioned. These include the monthly general meetings / pot lucks and gift card raffle, the “Sink the Tree Contest”, Snow Golf, Bass Fishing Tournaments and a month of daily netting and fertilization activities necessary for a successful Spring Walleye hatch. Also needing recognition is the lady volunteers who worked hard and volunteered countless hours assembling the holiday decorations that will adorn the Clubhouse LL at the Christmas Party. The Fishing Club wants to thank these ladies and everyone who volunteered in 2018 for making it a great year. We look forward to 2019 with high hopes for another successful year. And if you’re not a member, don’t fret, you don’t need to be an avid fishing person to join, all you need is a desire to have fun, an urge to enjoy good friends and a wish to have a rewarding experience.

The past month the Prairie Club completed seed collection from the two prairies to use on a campground area where trees have fallen. Not to fret, as we will incorporate annual flowers within the prairie mix so you will not have to wait for flowers (until spring of course). Prairie plants usually take a couple of years to bloom as they form deep roots first. Then we plan to overseed the LCB (Lake Carroll Blvd.) Prairie.

Overseeding is a term to place collected, cleaned, and dried seeds amongst the already established prairie in areas where non-native species like wild parsnip, black locusts, honeysuckle, multiflora roses, and birds-foot trefoil are trying to invade the prairie. They can be curtailed by prairie plantings! We illustrate here what four people can accomplish in less than two hours of work on the hundreds-of-years-old massive oak tree up on the remnant prairie.

Fall seemed to leave quickly this year, and with it has come a bit of ice earlier than expected! The changing seasons will most certainly bring with it colder temperatures and the ‘hard water’ (ice) on the lake probably earlier than normal. Weather you cross-country ski, enjoy the tube-tow, or ice fish; you need to be aware of hypothermia.

With the lack of ice last year, I’m sure the ice fisherman will be wanting on the ice as soon as possible this season. While we can Joe Rush never guarantee the safety of ice, and you can always assume a Lake Manager risk going on ‘hard water’, there are some things you can do to keep your self safer while going out. We’ve outlined a list of them below, but PLEASE learn about ice fishing safety, and cold weather / water survival before you head out to the water…

Even if you don’t spend time on the ice, just the cold weather of winter can be dangerous.

Here’s some info everyone can use about hypothermia; How you recognize it and what you can do should you or someone you know are experiencing hypothermia.

WHAT IS HYPOTHERMIA? The definition of hypothermia is where the body is losing heat faster than it can produce it and the body’s core temperature drops below 95 degrees. Falling into cold water can increase your chances of hypothermia. There are several signs / symptoms someone is experiencing hypothermia. By familiarizing yourself with these, you will be better equipped to protect yourself, or recognize the condition in a friend or family member.

Some signs and symptoms include: • Shivering.

• Slurred speech.

• Abnormally slow breathing.

• Cold, pale skin.

• Loss of coordination.

• Fatigue.

• Confusion or memory loss.

• Bright red, cold skin (infants).

TO CARE FOR SOMEONE WITH HYPOTHERMIA: Hypothermia doesn’t set on instantly, and the signs and symptoms usually develop slowly. People with hypothermia typically experience gradual loss of mental acuity and physical ability, so they may be unaware that they need emergency medical treatment.

Call 911 or emergency medical assistance. While waiting for help to arrive, monitor the person’s breathing. If breathing stops or seems dangerously slow or shallow, begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) immediately.

Move the person out of the cold. If going indoors isn’t possible, protect the person from the wind, cover the head, and insulate the individual from the cold ground.

Carefully remove wet clothing. Replace wet things with a warm, dry covering.

Don’t apply direct heat. Don’t use hot water, a heating pad or a heating lamp to warm the person. Instead, apply warm compresses to the center of the body — head, neck, chest and groin. Don’t attempt to warm the arms and legs. Heat applied to the arms and legs forces cold blood back toward the heart, lungs and brain, causing the core body temperature to drop. This can be fatal.

Give the person warm beverages. Don’t give the person alcohol.

Handle people with hypothermia gently. Don’t massage or rub the person because their skin may be frostbitten, and rubbing frostbitten tissue can cause severe damage.

Body to body rewarming. In remote areas where assistance is delayed, practice “body to body” rewarming. Surround the victim with body heat in a sleeping bag, tent or other sheltered spot.

We hope this helps you to be safer while enjoying the winter activities Lake Carroll has to offer.

This was an important goal for the Prairie Club as we wanted to see what she really looked like in her glory after the bushy woody undesirables were removed and she could breathe easier. So for the physical exercise we invite you to join us in removal of these woody exotics to open up the Lake Carroll remnant prairie. It can be just walking some branches and sticks to a pile or lopping off branches. You just need to dress warmly and wear leather gloves. Yes we do work in the winter months!

It is winter but how about exercising your mind besides your body? Below we are listing some of our favorite ‘How to’ websites and applications for you to educate yourselves on topics such as the removal of woody invasives, Illinois native plants, rain gardens, butterflies, weeds, plant pictures and names, and bird identification.

The University of Illinois Extension Offices, where I received a Master Naturalist certification is a wealth of educational webinars, articles, and workshops that are free or of very minimal charge: https://extension.illinois.edu/. You may also do a search for anything there and not only are all the Illinois counties connected on the website but they provide links from all counties. You may access any of their information. For example I searched for rain garden and received pages on planning one, what to plant so all of the details were provided. (Rain gardens manage stormwater drainage and add beauty to your landscape. We will provide instructions next spring). They have a native wildflower directory. For our purposes you could link under Programs then Horticulture then view the websites. After attending a Tri-state Forestry conference we found the DNR site helpful: www.dnr.illinois.gov. For instance a search provided methods on eradication of woody invasives by reducing competition (i.e. large amounts of seeds, nuts, buds, berries also known as mast) around trees/forbs/grasses.

Therefore ‘removing the low quality species, herbaceous management increases food production, improves wildlife habitat, and improves native species diversity’.

We work almost daily with the Northwest Illinois Prairie Enthusiasts. They have a website: www.theprairieenthusiasts.org and are very knowledgeable. You may click ‘what we do’, then ‘education’, then blog on management tips or other categories.

We also work with the Northwest Illinois Audubon Society: www.nwilaudubon.org.

They have information on prairies, birding, and search engines.

Another source is The Illinois Native Plant Society website (www.ill-inps.org).

Under plant resources find further links to plant identification, native plant nurseries, etc. Prairie Moon Nursery (www.prairiemoon.com) out of Minnesota and www. prairienursery.com in Wisconsin are established native plant growers with more information and would provide you a catalog. For FACEBOOK fanatics try Illinois Prairie Wild Ones or Audubon, Prairie Enthusiasts, Ill. Native Plant Society (which has a link to Management of Invasive Plants and Pests of Ill.) and U of I Extensions are there all with great pictures!

Of course there are many more and we would love to hear about any you find useful. There is always the old-fashioned way of grabbing your trusty field guides to accompany you on nature adventures. Prairie Club members are happy to help you research anything.

We hope to have had good attendance at the November meeting for the community.

An educational DVD “A Tallgrass Prairie Revival” is all about prairies and our power point presentation which will be on the two prairies here. Like you, we want Lake Carroll to be the best it can be. In January we plan on hosting Prairies Part II which will concentrate on Eradication of Invasives and Prairie Burns. 2 cups milk 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1- 12 oz bag shredded Cheddar cheese 1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper (optional) 1 7 oz box elbow macaroni, cooked half way Step 1 Preheat oven to 400°. Microwave milk at HIGH for 1 1/2 minutes. Melt butter in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-low heat; whisk in flour until smooth. Cook, whisking constantly, 1 minute.

Step 2 Gradually whisk in warm milk, and cook, whisking constantly, 5 minutes or until thickened.

Step 3 Whisk in salt, black pepper, shredded cheese, and, if desired, red pepper until smooth; stir in pasta. Spoon pasta mixture into a lightly greased 2-qt. baking dish.

Bake at 400° for 20 minutes or until golden and bubbly.

Winter Emergency Preparedness

With the onset of winter, it’s a good time for all of us to be reminded of some basic precautions we should have in place…specifically, what you need to keep yourself safe until help arrives in the event you become stuck in the snow or stranded. The Security Notes and Safety First columns remind us that LCA’s Security and Maintenance departments cannot pull or tow your vehicle. What they can do is transport a stranded motorist to a warm location.

With this mandate in place, we urge anyone travelling during inclement winter weather to, first and foremost, make a conscious decision if your trip is really necessary. Beyond that and in the event bad weather occurs when you’re already out, be prepared. For those of you with Internet access, you can search for “Winter Emergency Preparedness” and find many sites that offer from very detailed to basic checklists.

Besides having certain items in your car you should be sure to have a couple numbers already programmed in your cell phones for towing services. In the event you do become stranded, your inclination will be to keep your vehicle running for warmth. Please take note of your exhaust pipe. Make sure it isn’t clogged with snow, ice or mud. A blocked exhaust could cause deadly carbon monoxide gas to leak into the passenger compartment with the engine running.

Winter brings some beautiful landscapes, snow sports/activities, and also brings a time for popular family gatherings. Along with the good, there’s always the potential of some bad weather. Plan ahead; be prepared. We wish you all a safe winter season.

Friends of the Lanark Public Library Wish You Happy Holidays The Friends of the Lanark Public Library (FLPL) would like to take this time of the year to again remind you all of how grateful we are for your support during the past thirteen years. We would like to thank all the people in our communities who donate books to our bookstore, Twice-Sold Tales Used Books. A BIG Thank You to our customers who buy books, make a money donation, or just tell usto keep the change. A special Thank You to all the volunteers who faithfully work their shifts.

Thank you for having a piece of pie at ‘Pie on the Porch’ or volunteering to lend a hand by baking our wonderful homemade pies.

We could not successfully hold this event without your continued support for our efforts. As funding for libraries continues to decrease, our fundraising is used to provide a modern library that meets the needs of all ages. Additionally, our members volunteer to assist the Chamber of Commerce in their efforts. Friends of LPL are a group of volunteers who year after year continue to work for the community and strive to make the library a focal point of the community.

In 2018 Friends of LPL funds have provided: co-sponsorship for the Summer Reading Program by providing prizes for children reaching their reading goals; a donation to the Old Settlers Days Committee to keep that tradition going, as well as participation in the parade and afternoon entertainment for children and adults; a year subscription for Large Print books; a year subscription for the E-books; free books at Hometown Days & OSD; and the Friends of the Lanark Public Library’s annual scholarship to an Eastland high school student. Again, our supporters should be congratulated for their continued patronage and donations for our events throughout the past year.
