CRAFTING AWARD-WINNING DESIGNS FROM THE GLASGOW SCHOOL OF ART
Laings has long believed in empowering emerging talent and helping young people to realise their dreams in the jewellery industry. A Laing family member that carried this philosophy through the decades was Robert Laing, fourth generation of the Laing family. Robert cared passionately about modern ideas in jewellery design and part of his distinguished legacy was the ability to identify talent and not only champion it, but accelerate it.
“Without
encouragement of the rising generation, the creative element in our craft would be lost. It is great to know that within this sphere, our small country can compete successfully with the giants of the world. You have to follow the flair and creativity of award-winning designers.”
ROBERT LA i NG ,
1970
Over the period from 1967-1970, Laings crafted avant-garde jewellery designs by three students from Glasgow School of Art to enter the Diamond International Awards sponsored by De Beers. This close relationship with Glasgow School of Art and its prestigious silversmithing and jewellery course provided Laings with a window into the future of design. Through this collaboration, Robert’s dream to bring prestige to Scotland and put Glasgow on the international map for award-winning jewellery design came true. At the time, Diamond International Awards were the most coveted honours in jewellery design affectionally dubbed the ‘Oscars of Jewellery’. The awards were presented annually since the inaugural event in 1954, with between 25-30 winners chosen for their exceptionally creative diamond designs. Winners of the awards often went on to become eradefining designers across the globe, with an esteemed place in the honours said to advance their careers by up to ten years through the phenomenal exposure.
CRAFTING AWARD-WINNING DESIGNS FROM THE GLASGOW SCHOOL OF ART
JEAN JOHNSTON
Jean Johnston drew inspiration from light pouring through a carved stained glass window to create the design for her award-winning brooch, which was also styled on a 1960’s headpiece. The intricate design cleverly fashioned 77 diamonds in shapes of textured yellow gold on a framework of smooth polished gold. Laings called upon master craftsman Tom Collins to create the piece. By this point in his career, Tom was also recognised by local Scottish media for his contributions to the award-winning design and craft formula that struck gold at the Diamond International Awards three times. Tom, who was 37 at the time of Jean’s award submission, had been at Laings for ten years honing his skills when he crafted the brooch – a design which came with its own trials and tribulations behind the bench.
“I used a piece of 18ct gold just onesixteenth of an inch thick for the base of this 2in. by 2in. brooch. One of the few problems was when the fine white gold tubing, in which the stones are set, didn’t arrive in time and I had to make my own.”

THE 1986 COMMONWEALTH GAMES BATON
In the summer of 1986, the Commonwealth Games were held in Edinburgh, Scotland’s picturesque capital city. To mark the historic occasion for Scotland, Laings was bestowed the honour of designing and crafting the Commonwealth Baton, an iconic emblem that embodies the spirit of the games.
“The design was inherently challenging but equally exciting. Immediately I looked to previous batons in search of inspiration but my objective was to create something that had never been seen before. I wanted the piece to have some drama about it, different from those of the past, but most importantly it had to be indigenously Scottish.”
M i CHAEL LA i NG
Ten months before the Commonwealth Games took place, Laings was approached by the royal palace to design the baton. Crafting such a design from precious metals and gemstones presented technical challenges –the baton needed to be durable enough to withstand the lengthy journey and robust in case it was dropped, but
equally beautiful to represent both Laings and Scotland to our Commonwealth friends around the globe.
Michael Laing looked to the legends of Greece for the inspiration behind the design. He was inspired by the Greek mythology of ancient games, which ceremoniously displayed flaming torches and sacred fires as symbols of competition. As the host country, Michael wanted to combine this creative vision with materials from Scotland itself, with the ambition that the design would be crafted from local resources. Rather than choosing traditional gemstones for the baton, Michael forged a different path and sourced rare Scottish Jasper from the mountains.
Together with Robert Reekie – Curator of Geology at National Museum of Scotland, Michael travelled to the Campsie Fells to find the perfect stone for his creation. It took Robert over 100 hours to polish, groove and shape the stone for the design, using tools in the geology department of the museum. Scottish Jasper has rich, burgundy tones which were described by Michael as “a splendid autumn scene”. This wonder of nature brought to life the fire of Michael’s original vision.
“Standing with my parents and watching the baton arrive with the Queen herself was a moment of immense pride for me, a real triumph of my career as a designer. The
whole process from imagination to conception was truly an experience that I, those involved, and the teams at Laings today will appreciate forever more.”
M i CHAEL LA i NG
Following the Commonwealth Games, the baton returned to Laings Edinburgh where it was showcased alongside the medals of Allan Wells MBE, Commonwealth and Olympic Gold Medallist. As well as being one of the most accomplished Scottish athletes of all time, Allan Wells carried the baton for the last leg of the 1986 Commonwealth relay. As a sprinter in his youth, this was a full circle moment for Michael Laing.

A BESPOKE CREATION FOR SIR JACKIE STEWART
Laings relationship with Sir Jackie Stewart dates back to the late 1960s, when the racing legend befriended Laings with a shared love of craftsmanship. At the time, Sir Jackie was one of the most acclaimed celebrities and almost 60 years later is still one of the United Kingdom’s greatest ever sport stars.
A key milestone in this cherished relationship took place in 1974, when Sir Jackie gifted a Laings necklace to his wife, Lady Helen Stewart. To mark his retirement from Formula 1 racing, Sir Jackie presented Lady Helen with a choker on her 33rd birthday. The design featured 3 rows of pearls for his 3 World Champion titles, 27 rubies for his 27 Grand Prix wins and 99 diamonds for the 99 Grand Prix he entered – an encapsulation of a truly accomplished career.
Sir Jackie and Laings reunited to design a necklace for the Jackie Stewart Classic in 2022. This event was held to raise funds for Race Against Dementia, Sir Jackie’s charity which is inspired by Lady Helen’s own battle with dementia. Daring, bold and dramatic, the very elements that are the cornerstones of a fast-paced Formula 1 race are the same components that drove the inspiration behind the design. Influenced by the rugged Scottish landscape, the magnificent thistle and stag-inspired centrepiece commands attention, with over 100 diamonds and blue sapphires representing the saltire and the racer’s homeland.
“It was an honour to have been asked to work with Sir Jackie Stewart to produce a beautiful piece of jewellery for an amazing gentleman and such a worthy cause. We used Laings sapphires, an extra special symbol of our enduring relationship, creating a truly exceptional piece that can be cherished for generations.”

THE 175 NECKLACE
The 175 necklace is one of our finest ever pieces of jewellery, embodying our legacy of passion and love, passed down through six generations.
To celebrate the 175th anniversary of Laings, the Laing family fulfilled their ambition to create an astonishing, one-of-a-kind piece of jewellery to commemorate a milestone in their history. Through years of conversation leading up to the anniversary, Laings dreamt up a design that would embody our philosophy and demonstrate the finest craftsmanship of our workshops, the beating heart of Laings.
The design would become known as The 175 Necklace. Rich in Celtic influences and encrusted with diamonds, The 175 Necklace honoured Laings Scottish legacy and the generations of the family that came before it. To this day, The 175 Necklace is one of our proudest creations and is the embodiment of our commitment to pushing the boundaries of jewellery design.
THE i NSP i RAT i ON
Although the necklace was designed to celebrate the anniversary of Laings as a company, the influence for its aesthetic came from the most loved ladies of the Laing family. Those daughters, granddaughters, wives and sisters inspired the necklace, which symbolises each of their individual personalities and is intertwined with their love for one another. With overlapping knots of diamonds and angular metal twists, the design also drew on Celtic inspiration to honour Laings history in Scotland. This decision was taken so the masterpiece could transcend time, becoming neither historic nor modern, but forever timeless.
“We knew the necklace had to be dramatic and dynamic to reflect the depth of Laings history. The design pays homage to Laings and its deeply engrained Scottish roots with Celtic elements, ornate details and curved lines which are reminiscent of historical jewellery, but with a contemporary edge. It truly does embody all elements of Laings – the modern, the classic and the elegant.”
SARAH ALEXANDER LEAD DESIGNER
A CELEBRAT i ON OF CRAFTSMANSH i P
Taking nearly a full year to create, The 175 Necklace was crafted by our five most experienced specialists, who combined ancient skill with modern innovations throughout the process. This never-ending pursuit of perfection meant the necklace spent over six months in our workshops, with each of the 447 diamonds meticulously set by hand. The back of the necklace was also finished with a sapphire clasp, to provide an elegant counterbalance for 360 degrees of captivation.
THE TIMELINE
JAMES LAING
In 1840, Glasgow was defined by a creative spirit. It was a city that was brimming with excitement and the bustling streets held promise, with heads filled with dreams of what could be. It is in this era of possibility that we find Laings founding father, James Laing.
As the city prospered, the family business expanded into retail providing the Victorian gentry with luxury items that became part of the occasions that their clients celebrated, the glittering affairs that now have an almost fairytale-like quality to them.
Glasgow was the epicentre of shipbuilding. It was a place where craftsmanship was evident as skilled work, expertise and attention to detail came to the forefront. James founded the family business that supplied the Clydebuilt vessels with timepieces and precision instruments, crucial to their journeys, and was soon appointed by the Admiralty and Clyde Port Authority as official clockmakers.
SECOND GENERAT i ON 1914 – 1938
ROBERT LAING
Glasgow flourished throughout the Industrial Revolution, bringing wealth and a desire for luxury to the city. With the Roaring Twenties in full swing, Robert opened showrooms with new and exciting creations demonstrating Laings instinctive flair for design.
The Art Deco style of the period favoured sharp lines, geometric details, as well as strings of pearls. Robert’s imagination was captured, and he married what had been age-old techniques with innovative ideas, creating sensational designs that echoed the exhilarating nature of the era.
Jewellery followed fashion, with diamonds and gemstones creating magical shows as they sparkled in a haze of champagne bubbles. Laings had now made a name for itself in the world of luxury, providing discerning clients with extraordinary pieces that were designed to delight.
TH
WILLIAM LAING
William Laing saw the shattering impact of WWII. However, rather than being defeated, he was fueled by family values, confidence, and an absolute determination to succeed.
In a time of uncertainty and suffering, relationships do not stop, and cherished moments quietly continue. William knew whether it was an engagement ring that represented love or a watch to mark an important milestone, jewellery held these emotions. Laings pieces acted as tokens of love, carrying beautiful sentiments that continued even when loved ones were separated.
Laings special pieces could help to give people a small sense of comfort in uncertain times. William understood the possibility of jewellery and worked to ensure that these sentimental meanings could be continued, transforming heirlooms, sourcing the perfect engagement rings, and restoring loved pieces.
FOURTH GENERAT i ON 1960 – 1969
ROBERT LAING
The grey post-war years were transformed into a fun-loving era that was full of enjoyment. Robert embodied this creative spirit and put Glasgow on the international map for jewellery design. He made three spectacular pieces for the prestigious Diamond International Awards held in America, which were a fitting tribute to Laings skill, craftsmanship and interpretation.
Art, music and fashion flourished in this time, as freedom of expression was celebrated. This translated into an exciting movement in jewellery design, leading to innovative and elaborate pieces. It was a breath of fresh air, revitalising the business.
His groundbreaking designs were matched by a trailblazing approach to retail environments. He displayed Rolex watches in tanks with fish, creating new standards of customer experience and reinventing the family business with a contemporary image change.
F i FTH GENERAT i ON EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN
STUART LAING
Luxury came to the forefront in the 1970s, with brands capitalising on advertising opportunities. This led to retailers becoming household names, places where people aspired to shop. Laings had grown into a well-known and celebrated name, that created a certain feeling for its clients. Stuart Laing understood this and wanted every individual to feel special. He has a passion for exceptional customer service, with confidence that came from the expertise gathered from the generations before him. Our showrooms became destinations for those searching for treasures to mark important moments.
Stuart Laing joined the business with an innate sense of what luxury meant. He galvanized the Laings signature style of presenting watches and jewellery in a captivating atmosphere. Both the store and jewellery exuded luxury.

The 1970s also brought with it technological advancements and the art of diamond-cutting had now been perfected. Our dedication to customer service was rivalled only by enthusiasm for outstanding design. Laings used these innovations to enhance the excellence of our pieces through the brilliance of craftsmanship.
The key elements of the Laings style are originality, simplicity, and free-flowing beauty.
M i CHAEL LA i NG
Michael Laing used his generations-old knowledge and innovative new techniques to create one-off pieces of jewellery. His skill was recognised in 1986 when he designed the Commonwealth Games Baton, an amazing piece of craftsmanship that carried the Queen’s message and was adorned with a rare Scottish jasper gemstone.
WENDY LAING & JOE WALSH
When Wendy Laing and her husband Joe Walsh joined the family business in 2011, they brought with them an undeniable passion and determination to continue the Laings story, telling a tale of Heritage, Craftsmanship, and Expertise.
They looked back to the skills that founded Laings, using the guiding principle of craft to write our future. Laings workshops are at the heart of what we do, and we have a vision of creating collaborative spaces where skilled goldsmiths and watchmakers can work together in a technical and creative space, all united by the same passion. It is in this space that we see age-old skills paired with new techniques and innovation, working side-byside in perfect harmony to reignite a love of craftsmanship for generations to come.
Did our founding fathers dream of the Laings that we know today when they started in 1840? We will never know for certain, but the spirit of Laings is an undeniable one that has inspired six generations to continue telling our story, a story that has many more chapters yet to be written.

CRAFTSMANSHIP
WORKSHOP ETHOS
It has been over 180 years since Laings was founded and at the time of its inception every jeweller or workshop was based on craftsmanship. They were started by watchmakers, clockmakers and goldsmiths – by someone at a bench. This is how the story of Laings began. And our vision is to honour this now more than ever.
We are returning to what a jeweller is at its roots and in its rawest form. Reinforcing the craft and skill that makes a jeweller, a jeweller and did so over 180 years ago. This is key to our integrity.
“The main thing we want to achieve from our workshops is our clients’ trust. We can talk about the pieces as much as we like and be as technical as we can be, but everything ties into trust. We have to take care of each item as if it were our own.”
SERENA GOUGH HEAD OF SERVICE
Laings workshops promote an environment for impassioned people to share knowledge, expertise and skill, whilst nurturing and growing the next generation. We combine ancient crafts with youth and modernity, bringing different perspectives together to attract a new wave of talent to join our industry. Referred to as “the skill renaissance” by Richard Laing, the workshops play host to the next generation who will learn crafts from those who have been in the industry for decades, ensuring they are never forgotten.
Our cities are incredibly important to us. We are opening doors and bringing opportunities to places in the country where they do not exist. This will reignite crafts in areas where they have died out, bringing back the presence of goldsmithing and watchmaking to the amazing cities in the United Kingdom Laings is fortunate to call home.
Above all, what makes our workshops special is the people. To Laings, it is not only about having the most state-of-the-art spaces. It is about a collective of people, who are all working towards one common goal. It is about the love for skill and learning, and the continuous quest for perfection.
“The person who’s passed on the torch to their apprentice creates a skill bloodline. They pour all their knowledge and energy into their apprentice in the hope they’ll fall in love with the craft as much as they do. Through this love, care and attention, we create the next workshop generation.”
SERENA GOUGH HEAD OF SERVICE

LAINGS BESPOKE
Bespoke design captures the imaginations of all those who undertake this magical journey of jewellery design.
Creation and recreation form the two pathways of bespoke design at Laings. The first, creation, is an all-encompassing journey that brings your dream piece of jewellery to life with a dedicated Laings designer. The second, recreation, is the act of transforming an existing piece of jewellery – potentially a family heirloom – into a reimagined piece, often holding the utmost sentimental value to its wearer. Each pathway represents the essence of bespoke, exuding its own story and magical journey to discover.
To create a one-of-a kind, you need to be one-ofa-kind. Each designer within Laings has a unique style, able to take your vision and carefully marry it with their artistic expression. From romantic and filled with nature to Baroque and even Bauhaus, Laings designers represent different corners in the art of jewellery design. Together, they are united by a love for enriching the jewellery design journey with emotion and storytelling, ensuring personal significance is distilled into every piece.
“I love that subtle changes take place over decades of design. When you look back it makes for era defining collections that embody the individual spirit of each inspiration and creator – every one encompassing unique skills and new discoveries.”
SARAH ALEXANDER LEAD DESIGNER
The beauty of bespoke design often lies in the endless choice of gemstones that evoke this emotional reaction and capture your moment, with the likes of Emeralds from Columbia, Rubies from Burma and Pearls from the Pacific Oceans. With the ability to choose the stones and see from a plethora of exquisite creations of the Earth, you can ensure the design truly is personal.
Turning conceptual into reality, Laings workshops work hand-in-hand with our designers to craft the jewellery pieces to the highest standard. Honouring the storied benches of Laings yesteryear, our goldsmiths and stonesetters use centuries old techniques combined with modern technology to craft every bespoke piece, which is overseen by the designer who illustrated it – ensuring the piece is true to the soul of its original vision.
“I love how mixing different cuts of gemstones can produce a structural but elegant look when placed correctly in a piece of jewellery. To provide contrast to that structure, I also like to work with organic fluid metal shapes to create a harmonious balance.”
K i RSTY BERRY
A quintessentially Kirsty Berry design, this parure features a subtle geometry in the setting of pear shaped emeralds that dance around lines of diamonds. With Kirsty’s main inspirations coming from architecture and art movements such as Bauhaus, this necklace showcases her ability to fuse timeless design with modern lines. Kirsty chose to use emeralds as she is drawn to their Egyptian history and cemented place in history, with Cleopatra perhaps the most famous historical figure to cherish these gemstones.
“This pearl and aquamarine necklace is designed to be versatile. The centre section is detachable, meaning it could be worn as one singular piece as depicted here or separately as a pendant or brooch. In technical jewellery terms, this is called an enhancer.”
FEL i C i TY LYNDEN
As a romantic herself, Felicity Lynden is fascinated by vintage and estate jewellery. Characteristics from the bygone era can be seen in this pearl and aquamarine necklace, which uses classic royal influences and adaptable design. In the late 1800s, the royal family frequently commissioned jewellery that could be refashioned into separate pieces or the stones could be swapped to create different looks without the need for an entire new piece.
“Some might find the inclusion of the snake perhaps a little surprising, as for some they cause feelings of fear and trepidation. However, serpent jewellery dates to ancient times when snakes were admired for their ability to shed their skin which represented renewal and transformation.”
ALEXS MC i LWRA i TH
Alexs Mcilwraith finds love in the symbolism of jewellery, especially when pieces have a rich narrative and radiate story. Alexs designed this necklace and earring set using two juxtaposing natural references – wheat and serpentine. Wheat has been regarded as a symbol of fertility, prosperity and rebirth since ancient times, and has featured in jewellery design for royalty who wish to be identified with positive, life affirming notions. In 1840, Prince Albert gave Queen Victoria a serpent engagement ring. At the time, snakes were a symbol of wisdom and commitment. It was also a very sentimental piece as emerald was Queen Victoria’s birthstone.

GLASGOW
TheLaings story first began in Glasgow in 1840, when our founding father James Laing established the family business among the streets of the bustling Merchant City. Then focused on manufacturing clocks and pocket watches from a small workshop in the heart of Glasgow’s city centre, over the decades the business expanded to become a nationally recognised destination of fine jewellery and horology.
Making home in various buildings around the city, the Laings name has become synonymous with Glasgow’s history and has been a companion to the city through centuries of change.
In the heyday of Glasgow’s famous ship building era, each vessel would be presented with a piece of bespoke jewellery to bless the voyage. Laings holds the honour of marking many ships with our handcrafted pieces that have cemented our place in Glasgow’s heritage. Today, our name takes herald in the city within our new flagship showroom in the iconic Rowan House building on Buchanan Street.

SOUTHAMPTON
Hometo some of the largest and most luxurious ships, Southampton is known as Britain’s gateway to the world. Southampton is famed for its luscious surroundings, with unique displays of beauty such as the wild horses of New Forest and elegant Ocean Village. In 1995, Laings took the opportunity to expand into England, acquiring renowned family jeweller Parkhouse and Wyatt in Southampton.
With similar values to our own, trust and reputation were at the core of Parkhouse’s offering, so much so that we only introduced the Laings name to our Southampton showroom in 2017, marking our place as one national brand.
Settling in the city’s largest shopping centre Westquay, Laings accompanies Southampton’s top tailors and eateries, presenting unique gemstones and precious timepieces to a city steeped in sophistication.

Formerlyknown as Parkhouse, Laings was first introduced to Wales in 2000 with an acquisition that brought a new showroom to Cardiff with even more diamonds, jewellery and covetable timepieces. Welcoming some of the world’s most exclusive brands to Wales, Laings has made home in the St David’s Centre for over two decades, becoming well known for providing both new and returning clientele with a luxury experience second to none. Perhaps the most memorable period in Laings Cardiff’s history, the last few years have seen the large expansion of our showroom and the launch of a new OMEGA showroom adding to our presence within the city.
Our family business has continually invested in the traditional crafts of jewellery and watchmaking in the city, safeguarding artisanal skills with bespoke design areas and an on-site watch workshop, which bring new opportunities to the industry in the Welsh capital.

HIGH JEWELLERY
Laings experts strive to source the very best diamonds and gemstones to create our jewellery. Only those with an enchanting depth of colour and fiery brilliance are selected to be lovingly handcrafted into one of our designs.
Agemstone steeped in aristocracy, vibrant green emeralds are set alongside the fire of pear and marquise cut diamonds. Laings craftspeople carefully assemble these stones to showcase the vivid intensity of emeralds and the sparkling kaleidoscope within our diamonds. In each of these creations, marquise cut emeralds and diamonds frame a solo pear cut diamond. Our goldsmiths delicately craft a fine 18ct white gold setting, refined and minimal to allow the gemstones to shine. Our gem setters can then place each stone with the utmost care, bringing together these incredible creations.
HIGH JEWELLERY
At the heart of Laings lies a profound appreciation for the wonder of diamonds, allowing their inherent beauty to forge the inspiration of our design.
Impeccable

HIGH JEWELLERY
Perhaps one of the rarest gemstones in the world, pink diamonds emanate unconventional opulence with their playful but decadent colour.
Atriumph of nature and human discovery, pink diamonds are considered the second rarest of all fancy colour diamonds, requiring substantially more pressure to form than classic white diamonds. Laings is deeply invested in the complex beauty of fancy coloured diamonds and is delighted to present these candy-coloured wonderful stones and their sensational brilliance. The crystal-clear pear cut diamonds frame the pink diamond connection stone to achieve optimum scintillation, encouraging light to dance through all three beautiful stones. The combination of the diamond shapes and colours makes these one-of-a-kind drop earrings devastatingly dazzling.

pioneer and creator of the cultured pearl, Mikimoto presents the finest pearls in the world, bestowed in a series of innovative designs. Pearls are the only gemstones made by living animals and grow inside the tissue of a saltwater or freshwater mollusc. This natural phenomenon is extremely rare, with only one in one thousand oysters producing a pearl in their lifetime. In 1893, Kokichi Mikimoto revolutionised this process with his method of pearl cultivation, transforming the industry into what it is today. Only pearls of the highest quality and lustre can be bestowed with the name “Mikimoto Pearl”. These strict standards mean less than 10 percent of the pearls harvested will be presented in Mikimoto jewellery.
