Every diamond in the Family Collection is handselected in the pursuit of excellence. A process overseen by Richard Laing, who uses years of experience as Diamond Buyer to determine the strictest criteria for every diamond. Incredibly, only 3% of diamonds that are examined are worthy of bestowing our Family Collection.

“Isabella was just two at the time when we designed the collection, and her early love for rhythmic gymnastics helped shape its aesthetic with feminine playful twists. To this day, it’s still an interest of hers. The latest Isabella design features an ever so slightly broader ring, even though it’s still delicate and beautiful on the finger. We like to think of this as a reflection of Isabella herself, as she’s grown through the years, evolving her mind and broadening her horizons as a young woman.”

Founded in 1842, Fabergé has gained an unrivalled legacy ever since Peter Carl Fabergé became the official goldsmith to the Russian Imperial Court, providing exquisite jewels and the legendary series of lavish Imperial Eggs. In 1893, Kokichi Mikimoto discovered his technique for pearl culturing was successful and ever since, the Japanese jewellery house Mikimoto has been harnessing the allure of pearls, translating our wildest dreams into exquisite jewellery. Loved across generations the brand’s creations are designed to blend with the style of the individual to form a beautiful connection with the natural world through pearls.

Natural pearls are extremely rare – in the wild less than one in a thousand oysters may produce a pearl in their lifetime. A new chapter in the history of jewellery began when Kokichi Mikimoto identified and perfected the process of culturing pearls, making this beautiful gem of the sea now accessible to all.

Today, with over a century of expertise, the Mikimoto pearl is known globally for its unchallengeable high quality. Determined by several criteria, including uniformity in size, shape, colour and lustre, Mikimoto is the only pearl jewellery brand with an internationally recognised grading system.

The Akoya and South Sea pearls produced and procured by Mikimoto originate from the warm oceans of South East Japan, French Polynesia, Indonesia and Northern Australia and their elegant lustre and mesmerising range of colours are truly unique to each type of host oyster that has produced them.

Building the foundation for modern jewellery production in Japan, the company founder Kokichi Mikimoto sent his skilled designers to Europe, to study the latest techniques in jewellery craftsmanship outside Japan. Responding to the fashionable Art Deco and Art Nouveau movements of the time, Mikimoto fused refined Japanese metalworking with elegant European tastes to create its first international jewellery designs, some pieces of which are still in production today as part of the Mikimoto ‘Vintage’ collection. With continuing concern for the health of our planet and the environment, it is imperative that pearl

production and oyster farming is a sustainable industry.

The Story of Sarah Alexander, Lead Designer, Told to You in Her Own Words

Sarah Alexander, Lead Designer, has been at the forefront of bespoke design at Laings for more than thirty years. Over three decades, Sarah has brought to life some of Laings most unique client’s imaginations through artistry, skill and a dedication to understanding each and every story that underpins the bespoke design process.

After training in traditional jewellery design in Aberdeen, Sarah joined Laings and has been a cherished member of our family ever since. Through our continued diversification and growth, Sarah’s creativity has remained and has seen her work on some of Laings most notable designs, including our 175 necklace to celebrate Laings 175th year anniversary.

As well as continuing to create unique designs for clients, Sarah now passes on the years of wisdom to a new generation of Laings designers. Sarah’s mentorship guides them in how to transform a conversation with a client into a beautiful, sentimental and forever-loved jewellery piece.

TELL M E ABO UT YO UR UNIQ UE ID ENT IT Y A S A D ESIGNER ?

I was very avant-garde when I was first training.

My whole degree show was based around theatrical themes inspired by costume design and fashion. I felt that I could apply the principles of fashion through body adornments and a jewellery medium, which meant I didn’t actually work with metal for my degree show. I made theatrical neck pieces made of foam and dramatic textures. It wasn’t jewellery, it was body art. And I showcased it by using a dancer to display the pieces’ movement and fluidity.

DO YO U BR ING ANY O F T H IS INTO YO UR WO RK TO DAY ?

Now I work in a very traditional environment, but I bring a flavour of those avant-garde origins to it.

I draw on inspirations from the likes of ballet rouge and the precision of artistry from other mediums such as life drawing to bring my own style into the service. Because I’m imagining a clients’ vision though, I have to be adaptable. I’m happy to do

modern, I’m happy to do minimal – but there’s always a little flourish within the design that’s me, whether it’s an extra stone or curve of the metal.

W H AT A RT M OV E ME N T/A RT I STS I N S P I R E YO UR D E S IG NS ?

I’ve always been inspired by Art Deco for its lovely blend of detail and geometry. I do find myself drawn most to vintage eras, whether it’s the organic romance of Art Nouveau to the extravagance of 1920s design.

Léon Bakst, in particular, is someone I was always inspired by – he did all the stage costumes and jewellery from the era of the ballet rouge. I loved his drawings, they’re an ongoing source of inspiration for me.

It moves slower than you might think. Subtle changes take place over decades. When I first started out, designs were very chunky, gold and colourful. When I look at my work from back then, it’s much bolder than the way I design today – but it was of its time.

In the 1990s and noughties, we saw a lot of Princess Diana style rings with clusters and sapphires. Twists were also very popular – I did so many twists at one point. And you don’t see it as much anymore, but two-colour gold was often used in designs back then – half white, half yellow with diamonds set.

WH AT T REND S ARE WE CUR R ENT LY SEEING IN T H E IND UST RY ?

Today, it’s much more paired back and less detailed.

Everything has become very diamond focused and metal trends have moved more towards white over yellow. Since around 2010, jewellery has become very slimline and refined.

There’s always going to be a client who wants something more elaborate than the current trends though, and that’s what we’re here to facilitate – to bring their dreams to life. That client has been with us through decades and they have a clear understanding of what they want, something that’s different and has a little extra personality.

There’s an element of problem solving to it. I often think of it like a jigsaw puzzle, working your way through the different elements and how they all piece together. I also love the challenge of working with old stones and family pieces to see how they can be reimagined into a new design. This goes for all jewellery design but is important in remodelling projects where there can be limitations. We have to be conscious of the practicality, to strike the balance right between that and beauty.

S O, T H ERE M UST BE A FEELING O F RESP O NSIBILIT Y T H ERE FO R SUCH P RECIO US H EIRLO O M S?

Absolutely. It’s very important to me that the client enjoys the whole experience. We often become involved with the client’s life and it’s a responsibility to deal with such precious items for them. Through bespoke design, we do become their jeweller and that can lead to invites to weddings, funerals and everything in between. Forging relationships and the positive feeling clients have towards us is one of the things I love most about what I do.

WH AT ’S BEEN YO UR FAVO URIT E PIECE O F J EWELLERY YO U’ VE EVER D ESIGNED ?

It sounds simple, but I just like the idea of people being happy with the piece and enjoying its beauty. I also love seeing the reaction when we present pieces to clients.

It can actually be quite an emotional experience – especially when it’s a remodelling project that perhaps involves a lost loved one.

I’ve had the privilege of working with so many beautiful things, so many beautiful diamonds and stones over the years that it’s hard to choose. If I had to, I would say the 175 necklace that I designed for Laings 175th anniversary and had a value of £175,000.

The process was such a journey, it’s the longest I’ve

ever spent on any design and one of the most intricate because of the number of stones that were used. We all cried when it was finally made because of all the energy that went into it. Seeing it for the first time was so beautiful, and that moment will always be special to me.

H OW D O YO U B A L A N C E C R E AT I V I T Y A N D FU NC TI O N W H EN DE S I G N I N G ?

You do have to train yourself to understand what you can achieve within the parameters you have. For example, if I’m working with tanzanite – which is very delicate – and a client is looking for a claw set, I might have to recommend some alternative options to secure the integrity of the piece. It’s all about learning how to draw to something that’s lovely, but be able to back it up with knowledge on how stones, metals and the construction of the pieces will perform in the everyday environment. This can be a very fine balancing act, so that you can fulfil the wishes of the client but not to the detriment of the piece.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO MENTOR YOUNGER DESIGNERS AND NURTURE THE NEXT GENERATION OF TALENT?

It’s lovely to mentor younger designers. I find it invigorating to tap into my past designs and knowledge to pass on to the next generation, and it’s so nice to see that they have the same values and passion that I have – always looking to improve and to grow our service into something bigger. Sometimes you forget all the work you’ve done, but mentoring the other designers lets me revisit previous chapters in my career.

HOW DO YOU ENCOURAGE INDIVIDUALITY WITHIN THE DESIGN TEAM?

When I’m working with the younger designers on development, I never want to take away their individuality.

Everyone draws a circle a different way, everyone draws a facet a different way, and it’s great to see the uniqueness across the board. We have designers that are bold, and ones that are floaty and organic. The mix is invaluable.

WHAT IS THE FUTURE FOR LAINGS BESPOKE?

For the design department, it feels like we’re moving to the next level. Previously, we didn’t advertise bespoke too much, but now it feels right to show our presence and demystify the process for clients. All of the design team are looking forward to the next stage of our journey.

It’s not just our team that is growing however, we also have the pleasure of welcoming more goldsmiths and jewellers. They craft the pieces that we design and having that depth of skill shows that Laings can create jewellery with such a high level of polish.

In early 2021, Laings announced a new vision for the Services department with the expansion of our workshops and cultivation of skills within our locations.

These expanded workshops are part of a plan by Laings to breathe new life into the ancient skills of watchmaking and goldsmithing, often described as ‘a dying art’. By growing opportunities for these skillsets, Laings hopes to attract visibility to the industry and encourage the next generation of talent to train in the field.

Within the workshops, we will offer apprenticeships to learn the art of watchmaking and goldsmithing alongside seasoned professionals, guiding them through their training with mentoring. Serena Gough, Head of Services, says: “We want to give back to the industry that’s given us so much over the years. The workshops are the beginning of a larger plan by Laings to help cultivate the skills of watchmaking and goldsmithing in areas of the UK where there haven’t been enough opportunities. The ambition is to work with colleges and universities to show the magic of pursuing our

industry as a career, proving there’s real-world opportunities for those who study in these areas.”

In key locations, the workshops will break with tradition to draw back the curtain on the artisans and showcase the talent behind these services. Within dedicated events and seminars, clients will be able to enjoy a new world of watch and jewellery experiences with the chance to meet the makers and build a relationship with the person caring for their items.

It also gives the passionate enthusiasts of the industry the opportunity to learn about the different tools and materials that are used in the trade, as well as progressive developments such as sustainability initiatives weaved into the workshop principles.

The movements of its Oyster Perpetual and Cellini watches are certified by COSC, then tested in-house for further precision, performance and reliability. Since 1995, the OMEGA Seamaster has been worn

A storyteller of moments since 1931, the Reverso embodies the unique characteristics of JaegerLeCoultre as one of the watch industry’s most recognisable collections. Celebrating 90 years since its inception, the tale began with a challenge to create a watch that could withstand the polo matches of the British officers in India. To meet these demands, Jaeger-LeCoultre enlisted the help of industrial designer, Rene-Alfred Chauvot. Chopard’s accomplished history of fine watchmaking dates back to 1860, when the Maison was founded by Louis-Ulysse Chopard. Qualities such as precision and reliability were very sought-after characteristics in watches at the time. Mastering these while engineering unique chronometers and pocket watches, LouisUlysse Chopard aimed to fulfil and exceed these expectations. Since 1963, Chopard is owned by the Scheufele family and is one of the only remaining family-run watchmaking and jewellery companies.

Caroline and Karl-Friedrich Scheufele are Chopard’s Co-Presidents, and each play an active role in the company. Caroline Scheufele is responsible for the ladies’ collections, development of the jewellery section and High Jewellery department. KarlFriedrich Scheufele manages the men’s collections and developed sports watches during the 1980s along with the Chopard Manufacture in Fleurier, which has produced the L.U.C movements since the 1990s.

An official partner of the Cannes Film Festival since 1998, the Maison has been actively contributing to film production and the emergence of young talent, as evidenced by its Trophée Chopard, awarded each year to an up-and-coming actress and actor. From nurturing the next generation of film to adorning Hollywood’s most famous actors on the red carpet, Chopard’s commitment to cinema continues to endure and delight its audience around the world.

In 2021, Chopard strengthened its love affair with the film industry by announcing Julia Roberts as the ambassador for the Happy Sport collection.
