Indulge in the Story of Laings Making Memories Since 1840 1840 - 50

James and William Laing Brothers James and William establish the family wholesale and manufacturing business in the heart of Glasgow’s vibrant Merchant City. They soon expand into retail and are the jeweller of choice amongst the Victorian gentry.

Robert Laing 1914

As the business flourishes, James’ son, Robert, moves the original Merchant City workshop to a new location beside Glasgow Central Station.

Several showrooms are acquired, and Robert works on growing the retail side of the business.

William Laing 1938

James’ grandson William joins the family business, and Laings opens as a retailer for the first time. As World War II takes hold, the demand for jewellery hits rock bottom, and Laings begins to sell antique furniture and crockery from their new art deco premises on St. Vincent Street,Glasgow.

Robert Laing 1960’s

The next Robert in line devises a fresh motif for the family business and Laings relocates to Renfield Street,Glasgow. The company unveils a contemporary new image, and experiments with some innovative marketing techniques, including the infamous window display of Rolex watches in an aquarium.

Stuart and Michael Laing

1970’s

Under the ownership of brothers Michael and Stuart, Laings opens a new showroom in the Argyll Arcade, Glasgow in 1971 before opening another store in Edinburgh. They continue to grow their business buying Parkhouse jeweller in Southampton and later opening a new store in Cardiff under the Parkhouse brand. In 2005 the family business is split between Michael and Stuart. Stuart retaining the Glasgow stores and Michael Edinburgh, Southampton and Cardiff. Both businesses continued to thrive under their direction.

Stuart laing, Wendy Laing and Joe Walsh Stuart’s daughter Wendy and her husband Joe Walsh join the business in Glasgow. With them they bring a wealth of new and exciting brands. Wendy and Joe also launched the laingsuk.com website bringing the luxury of the Glasgow stores to the online domain. A huge achievement for Laings, the website continues to build on its success in online retailing today.

2011

Wendy Laing and Joe Walsh Wendy and Joe buy Michael’s business (Wendy’s uncle) and in doing so bring in Michael’s son and Wendy’s cousin, Richard Laing within the board of directors and Stuart Laing continues as Executive Chairman of the company. The acquisition reunites the two family businesses to become one and Laings as one of the largest independent jewellery businesses operating six stores across the UK under one brand ‘Laings’.

There are three stores in Glasgow, one in Edinburgh, Cardiff and Southampton.

2017

Laings is now one of the largest independent jewellers with a sparkling history dating back to 1840.

As with all bespoke designs, the creation of this spectacular piece of jewellery began with an initial consultation with our in-house team to discuss ideas. Our team then created hand-drawn and matrix designs using CAD (Computer Aided Design) to refine the design. To find rubies of the exact same colour and size can be difficult, we sourced spectacular Burmese rubies that are extremely rare and of exceptional quality. The diamonds used to create the elaborate design were meticulously hand-selected for their spectacular colour, enhancing the captivating glow of the rubies.

A watch service involves the following procedures: a full dismantling of movements, checking and replacing any worn and damaged parts, ultrasonically cleaning, assembly and lubricating, fully testing the timepiece, replacing seals where necessary and refurbishment of the case and bracelet when required.

What can I do to look after my jewellery?

We recommend having your ring Cleaned, Checked and Polished every 12 months. We’ll then be able to let you know of any issues, as well as ensuring your ring stays sparkling.

How can I take care of my jewellery at home?

Use a soft toothbrush and warm soapy water to gently brush the stones and setting, follow this by cleaning your jewellery with water. It’s important to note that coloured gemstones can be more sensitive.

How do I know my diamonds are good quality?

Our diamond experts would be more than happy to take you through the 4 C’s - Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat. Every diamond also comes with diamond certification, which is a way to ensure their quality.

How do I make sure I purchase the right size of engagement ring?

We stock our rings in a standard size and you can then come back into store with your bride-to-be to have the ring re-sized to the perfect fit.

How long does it take for wedding bands to be delivered?

Simple wedding bands can take 4-6 weeks, but if it’s diamond-set it may take a little longer. We would recommend that you start wedding ring shopping 3-6 months prior to the wedding day.

How often should my watch be serviced?

We would recommend having your watch serviced approximately every 3-5 years. It’s important to regularly have your timepiece serviced by a professional and if you notice something is wrong never try and fix it yourself.

How should I store my watch?

We recommend that you keep your timepiece safe in a box to avoid any unnecessary knocks and accidents. Laings offer a great range of WOLF watch boxes, a perfect solution for storing your collection of luxury timepieces.

What are the timescales for batteries and servicing?

Batteries and reseals usually take five working days and servicing can take 6-8 weeks if they are done on-site in our workshop. Occasionally watches need to be sent back to the manufacturers where timescales vary.

Can you adjust the size of a watches bracelet?

We can take links out for a smaller wrist, or we can order links from the watch brand if the bracelet needs to be made larger.

How long will a leather strap last?

You may want to look at replacing a leather strap approximately every 12 months if it’s worn every day. However this is dependent on wear and external factors, such as humidity.
