THE REV. DR. CHARLES FRANKLIN MCCOOK The Rev. Dr. Charles Franklin McCook, longtime faculty member and former Chair of Religion, passed away Jan. 1, 2021, at Wellstar West Georgia Hospice in LaGrange. He was 93. After serving in the Army at the end of World War II, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Emory University and a master’s and doctorate in ministry from Boston University. He served pastoral appointments in South Georgia, including United Methodist Church circuit pastor for Hagan, Mulberry Street Methodist Church in Macon and Asbury UMC in Columbus, as well as Oak Grove Congregational Church (United Church of Christ) in Pine Mountain. Dr. McCook joined the faculty of LaGrange College in 1961 and served as Religion chair for 33 years. He assisted the college in creating a bachelor’s program in Christian Education, devised a religion class for nursing students, developed a summer study course in Israel and initiated Project YES for the North and South Georgia UMC conferences to train college students for summer youth work. Dr. McCook’s collection of Israeli pottery is housed in Suber Archives in Lewis Library. The Georgia United Methodist Foundation has formed a Dr. C. Frank McCook Scholarship Endowment Fund in his honor.
