‘Cap and tassel to go, please’

Exactly 90 days before Commencement, the Class of 2021 was celebrated with a drive-through parade to receive their graduation caps and tassels.

We wanted to create student anticipation for their Commencement,” said President Susanna Baxter. “It was our way of showing appreciation for their hard work.

As cars snaked their way past Price Theater and Lamar Dodd Art Center, faculty and staff applauded the students.

Staff from the Office of External Relations handed out red and black shakers with the message: “When the caps and tassels are tossed … the Hill is still your home. LC alumni are cheering for you to join them soon!”

Faculty members in all their regalia celebrated each student. Kim Barber Knoll, Coordinator of Theatre Arts, said it was a fun event.

“The Theatre faculty arranged to be there when a large pod of our seniors came by,” she said. “It was a creative, clever way to recognize seniors, and it was wonderful to gather with fellow faculty members to celebrate as students drove through.”

President Susanna Baxter “handed” the students their caps and tassels using barbecue tongs decorated with Panther paws. A large frame was positioned on the driver’s side for a special photo opportunity.

Tammy Rogers, Director of Special Events and Conferences, helped organize the event.

“It was so festive and fun,” she said. “Everybody seemed to enjoy it, even though it was a chilly, but sunny, afternoon.”
